Troubling rhetoric: discourse theory and Irish Republican Army narratives (1962–1972)

ABSTRACT This paper examines rhetorical theory and narrative creation in the history of militant Irish Republicanism. The splintering of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) was predicated on numerous ideological differences during the 1960s; these shifts were underpinned by modalities of discourse and performative speech. Drawing on Ronald Krebs’ work, the IRA’s internal narrative conflicts from the period of 1962–1972 are analysed. Further, it adapts the philosophy of communicative action to show how discourse – spoken and written – was deployed within the pre-split IRA organization and among the Republican community during the turbulent period of 1968–1970. The ideological changes conducted by IRA Chief of Staff Cathal Goulding and his allies offer opportunities to study the competing nationalist narratives and intra-organizational conflict. This work explores the rhetorical foundations of Goulding’s narrative contestations and argues their ‘moment’ was hampered by self-created political hurdles, due to their modes of linguistic deployment. The further application of discourse analysis – through an examination of ‘resistance communities’ – demonstrates how forms of ‘coercive speech’ allowed the fledgling Provisional Irish Republican movement to adapt during and after the split. These theoretical frameworks add to the historiography of this turbulent period and reassesses the how’s of narrative reformation.

Meanings of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for Brazilian Olympic athletes

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games (OG) in Tokyo, producing numerous effects on participating athletes, especially those from developing countries. The objective of this study was to investigate and understand the impact of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 OG, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on the Brazilian Olympic athletes. The epistemology followed social constructionism. The methodology included semi-directed interviews with 11 Brazilian athletes who had qualified for the OG in seven different sports. Following the application of discourse analysis, three thematic categories were identified: a) inequalities and their social impact, b) the importance of supportive relationships, and c) athletes’ work challenges. Our findings initially indicate differences regarding social conditions faced by athletes from countries of the global north compared to those from the south, as is the case of Brazil. Secondly, we could verify the importance of multidisciplinary teams, training colleagues and family members for the preparation and development of the athlete. Thirdly, it was possible to identify an intensification of athletes’ training routines under inappropriate work environment. In conclusion, the study proposes a dialogue with the community involved in world Olympic sports, to problematize inequities that affect athletes from developing countries.

Actors’ and Actresses’ Perceptions on the Applications of Discourse Analysis from a Qualitative and Quantitative Outlook to Musical Theatre

Homo loquens has the ability of language. Language is present in all the aspects of life, including performing arts. The main goal of this proposal is to assess the perception of actors and actresses on a resource which has been developed to help them make the most of the text; the fundaments of this resource are in the linguistic theory. The main goal of this acting resource which combines a quantitative and a qualitative approach to the text is to foster critical thinking. The goal is thus to approach the dramatic text from different perspectives to provoke deep reflections on the text through discourse analysis. Subsidiarily, an interview to a professional actress has been carried out to know her thoughts on the resource and her perception was positive. As a conclusion, it might be interesting to explore the relationships between drama and linguistics.

COMPARATIVE DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF THE PRACTICS OF CHURCH WORSHIP OF UKRAINIAN AND AMERICAN PENTECOSTALS

The article demonstrates the basic concepts of discourse theory and offers a model of practical application of discourse analysis to determine the liturgical identity of the early American Pentecostals and Ukrainian Pentecostals of the Soviet period.The author demonstrates that if there are common elements in the history of the origin of the Pentecostal movement and the similarity of the dogmatic basis, the causes of misunderstandings should be sought in the hermeneutics of liturgical discourse. The "apostolic discourse" of the early American Pentecostals tended to maximize the deconstruction of all forms of worship in order to maximize the revelation of human nature for the knowledge of God. The discourse of "biblical fidelity" of the Soviet Pentecostals was formed during the period of information isolationism and brutal persecution on religious grounds. Combined with the Baptist tradition of regulated worship and Eastern Orthodox ideas of spirituality, the Soviet Pentecostals formed their own local liturgical tradition.The comparison of mystical manifestations and practices performed between the representatives of the Azusa Street Revival and the Soviet Pentecostals clearly illustrates the above theses.

Flipped Virtual Classroom Learning Model for the Course Study Discourse Analysis in Translation

<p>This study aims to explain the learning models of flipped virtual classroom that can be applied in virtual classrooms in discourse analysis in Translation courses. When teaching, the learning model is explained by using video as an appropriate and efficient choice pattern to achieve learning objectives. Flipped virtual classroom is a learning model that transfers synchronous virtual classroom models to asynchronous virtual classroom models. The research method in this discourse analysis in Translation course was through literary sources. The purpose of the research is to provide information about virtual learning methods as a means of enhancing learning and language proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia combined with translation reflection theory. The virtual learning model can be combined with variations of learning models such as: Problem-based Learning, Inquiry-based Learning, Project-based Learning, Research-based Learning. In conclusion, through the choice of an asynchronous virtual classroom learning model and the application of discourse analysis in Translation as a reflection activity in translation, students are able to make a more detailed and deeper translation analysis.</p>

Analyse du langage et analyse des discours : quelques applications en psychologie

Discourse analysis is still underdeveloped in Psychology. However, it offers both a precise theoretical framework and various methods of analysis, which make it possible to deal with issues at the heart of psychology and the missions of the practicing psychologists. All discourse is the result of a join construction; it integrates cross-perceptions as well as inter-individual and inter-group relational dynamics. There is no border between the individual who produced the discourse, and the individual who receives it. One is in the other and the other is in one. This conception is particularly relevant when it comes to analyzing what takes place at the heart of social relations, whatever the field of intervention: health, training, work and even more broadly the political and societal debate. This special issue does not aim to be exhaustive but presents different possible applications of discourse analysis, in order to provide the reader, reading grids and tools, which inform practice and nourish theory.

The Application of Discourse Analysis in First and Second Language Acquisition

Most linguists have regarded language purely as a medium of communication. Especially American structuralists and transformationalists had focused massively and very successful on problems within phonology and the grammar of the clause but ignored paragraphing or meaning (cf. Sinclair and Coulthard 1975). For them, the verbal and non-verbal context had “little bearing on grammatical or phonological description”. This view, however, does not cover all aspects of language at all. Language is much more than sheer communication; it is a powerful tool in every day situation in which humans interact.

NEGATIVE EVALUATIVE LANGUAGE IN DESCRIPTION OF ANTI-RUSSIAN SANCTIONS POLICY AND OF RUSSIAN COUNTER-SANCTIONS IN BRITISH ONLINE MEDIA DISCOURSE: A CORPUS RESEARCH

The article focuses on the negative evaluative language in British online media texts. The research is based on a corpus of over 600 articles published on the websites of mainstream and tabloid news media, namely “The Guardian”, “The Telegraph” and “Mirror Online”. The texts discuss western anti-Russian sanctions policy and Russian counter-sanctions. The research is targeted at determining lexical means of negative evaluation of the Russian Federation foreign policy. The application of discourse analysis has resulted in a selection of lexical means with negative semantics reflecting negative evaluation. Corpus linguistics tools such as the online corpus query system Sketch Engine and the application AntConc were used in the conducted analysis. These tools enabled statistical assessment of lexical means with negative semantics. In addition, the Sketch Engine tool “Thesaurus” has identified the items which are closely associated with the key notion of the research - “sanctions”. The analysis has revealed metaphors as the other language means of negative evaluation in media texts. Metaphors are known to reflect evaluation implicitly. However, they help create a vivid image in the mind of a reader. Thus, metaphors used by journalists of online media compare anti-Russian sanction policy to “war” and “battlefield”, while its consequences are compared to “a stranglehold on Russia's economy”.

The analysis of speech in academic research strategy

This article seeks to analyze the epistemological and methodological features of discourse analysis in academic research in the field of strategy, offering an introductory look at the subject. Specifically, it seeks to raise critical reflection on the research strategy for problems that can be analyzed discursively; as well as planning and conducting interviews producing data appropriate to that type of analysis. The findings indicate that the application of discourse analysis is often difficult, but especially if the objectives of the work involved on the one hand the critical reason, and on the other the interest in exploring issues surrounding strategic decisions in an interpretative way, the results can bring significant understanding on cultural issues and meanings shared by executives and researchers.

Exploring the role of discourse in marketing and consumer research

AbstractThis paper reviews the development of discourse‐based analysis in marketing and consumer research and outlines the application of various forms of discourse analysis (DA) as an approach. The paper locates this development alongside broader disciplinary movements and restates the potential for critical DA (CDA) in marketing and consumer behaviour research. We argue that discourse‐based approaches have considerable potential and application particularly in terms of supporting disciplinary reflexivity and research criticality. A discursive lens offers novel ways of understanding marketing as a subject/discipline as well as how marketing academics conceive and investigate objects of marketing inquiry. The objectives of this paper are fourfold: to outline the development of discourse and text‐based studies in marketing and consumer research; to reveal how this has shaped, framed and limited the application and utilisation of DA in particular ways; to synthesise the main principles of DA generally and CDA specifically; and highlight how these approaches could be applied to a range of marketing and consumer behaviour issues and contexts. Women and Political Leadership in Nigeria: A Discourse Analysis of Yoruba Proverbs

This paper contains a discourse analysis of Yoruba Proverbs that have relevance to women and political leadership in Nigeria. Its theoretical underpinning is the relevant aspects of the Systemic Functional Theory (SFT). Proverbs being metaphorical, the application of discourse analysis that concerns what human beings say to mean what they mean, may provide some understanding of the Yoruba worldview of the place of women in leadership positions. The analysis demonstrates the place of women in the Yoruba society with regard to what they do and participate in with their male counterparts and, indeed their irresistible strength to positions – political, social, religions etc.

Police interviews with suspected paedophiles: a discourse analysis

A review of the literature suggests that the principles of investigative interviewing in the UK do not translate well to the interviewing of suspects (Clarke and Milne, 2001). In fact, studies have revealed that rather than encourage uninterrupted ordinary narratives from suspects, police officers seek institutionally preferred versions of events (Auburn et al., 1995) and adopt legal discourse which is excessively precise (Gibbons, 2003) and, in interviews with suspected paedophiles, sexually explicit (Benneworth, 2006). This article will explore how an interviewing officer manages this conflict in an interaction with a suspected paedophile. An investigative interview with a 54-year-old male suspected of sexually assaulting a female between the ages of 8 to 12 years was transcribed and examined using a discourse analytic framework. The analysis identifies interactional difficulties faced by the interviewer and considers the implications for the progression of the investigative interview. The findings suggest how interviewers might manage these challenges to maximize information acquisition, highlighting the importance of encouraging uninterrupted narratives from suspected paedophiles. This article considers the wider application of discourse analysis to the criminal investigation.

Application of discourse analysis to nursing inquiry.

Discourse analysis (DA) has frequently been misapplied within nursing research, demonstrating a lack of understanding among some nurse researchers of theoretical/ methodological approaches within DA. To date, there are few specific nursing examples illustrating the application of DA, which presents a further obstacle for the new researcher. In this paper, Jim Campbell and Sheila Arnold outline a specific nursing example of DA research and describe the process of applying DA to nursing research via the personal experiences of the authors. Two different ways of 'coming to' a DA approach, will be described, one using a structured framework and the other a personal narrative.

Grammatical Conversion of Descriptive Narrative - an application of discourse analysis in conceptual modelling

Fact-oriented conceptual modelling begins with the search for facts about a universe of discourse (UoD). These facts may be obtained from many sources, including information systems reports, tables, manuals and descriptive narrative both verbal and written. This paper presents some initial findings that support the use of discourse analysis techniques as an approach to developing elementary fact based sentences for information systems conceptual schema development from written text. Although this discussion paper only considers the NIAM (fact-oriented) conceptual schema modelling method, the IS087 report from which the research case study is taken describes other conceptual methods for which the research contained in this paper could be applicable (e.g. Entity Relationship analysis). The case study could be modelled exactly in the form in which the text is initially found, but grammatical analysis focuses consideration on alternative, potentially better, expressions of a sentence, a theme which is described and demonstrated. As a result of having applied grammatical sentence simplification with co-ordinate clause splitting, each sentence could be expressed as a complete, finite, independent collection of declarative simple statements. The outcome from the application of the techniques described provides at a minimum a discourse analysis of descriptive narrative which will have retained its meaning and contextual integrity while at the same time providing a simplified and independent clause representation for input to the fact-oriented conceptual schema modelling procedure.

Shifting Paradigms

This article examines the application of discourse analysis in the empirical context of learning technology innovation. It outlines the various theoretical and methodological principles, as well as the technical procedures which have been followed in relation to the operationalization of an evaluation design using discourse analysis. The study itself is concerned with stakeholders' subjective and experiential knowledge structures which underlie a culture of technology innovation. The article examines how technology innovation is discursively constituted through the creation of shared meanings and images among stakeholders.

RÉSUMÉCet article étudie les possibilités offertes par l'analyse du discours pour comprendre les questions portant sur le vieillissement et la vie des personnes âgées. Les auteurs décrivent l'analyse de discours selon la perspective de la psychologie discursive et déterminent les principaux aspects de l'analyse du discours, soit (1) les tests verbaux et écrits sont perçus comme une action; (2) le discours est considéré en lui-même comme un sujet d'intérêt (et non une indication des états d'esprit); (3) la variabilité est reconnue comme un élément positif. De plus, ils traitent brièvement des étapes de l'analyse du discours. Ils présentent ensuite des exemples de recherches analytiques de discours (touchant la construction de l'identité, les menus propos, de même que les stéréotypes du vieillissement et l'humour). Finalement, les auteurs concluent en suggérant des utilisations et applications possibles de l'analyse du discours en matière de recherche sur le vieillissement.
