Bio-organic fertilizer facilitated phytoremediation of heavy metal(loid)s-contaminated saline soil by mediating the plant-soil-rhizomicrobiota interactions

Bio-organic fertilizer (BOF) was effective to promote the phytoremediation efficiency of heavy metal(loid)s-contaminated saline soil (HCSS) by improving rhizosphere soil properties, especially microbiome. However, there existed unclear impacts of BOF on plant metabolome and plant-driven manipulation on rhizosphere soil microbiota in HCSS, which were pivotal contributors to stress defense of plants trapped in adverse conditions. Here, a pot experiment was conducted to explore the mechanisms of BOF in improving alfalfa (Medicago sativa)-performing phytoremediation of HCSS. BOF application significantly increased the biomass (150.87–401.58 %) to support the augments of accumulation regarding heavy metal(loid)s (87.50 %–410.54 %) and salts (38.27 %–271.04 %) in alfalfa. BOF promoted nutrients and aggregates stability but declined pH of rhizosphere soil, accompanied by the boosts of rhizomicrobiota including increased activity, reshaped community structure, enriched plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (Blastococcus, Modestobacter, Actinophytocola, Bacillus, and Streptomyces), strengthened mycorrhizal symbiosis (Leohumicola, Funneliformis, and unclassified_f_Ceratobasidiaceae), optimized co-occurrence networks, and beneficial shift of keystones. The conjoint analysis of plant metabolome and physiological indices confirmed that BOF reprogrammed the metabolic processes (synthesis, catabolism, and long-distance transport of amino acid, lipid, carbohydrate, phytohormone, stress-resistant secondary metabolites, etc) and physiological functions (energy supply, photosynthesis, plant immunity, nutrients assimilation, etc) that are associated intimately. The consortium of root metabolome, soil metabolome, and soil microbiome revealed that BOF facilitated the exudation of metabolites correlated with rhizomicrobiota (structure, biomarker, and keystone) and rhizosphere oxidative status, e.g., fatty acyls, phenols, coumarins, phenylpropanoids, highlighting the plant-driven regulation on rhizosphere soil microbes and environment. By compiling various results and omics data, it was concluded that BOF favored the adaptation and phytoremediation efficiency of alfalfa by mediating the plant-soil-rhizomicrobiota interactions. The results would deepen understanding of the mechanisms by which BOF improved phytoremediation of HCSS, and provide theoretical guidance to soil amelioration and BOF application.

How Does Bio-Organic Fertilizer Combined with Biochar Affect Chinese Small Cabbage's Growth and Quality on Newly Reclaimed Land?

The cultivated land area in China is approaching the red line for farmland protection. Newly reclaimed land possesses a large exploratory potential to become a reserved land resource. Identifying a fertilization strategy is vital for improving the poor properties and weak fertility of newly reclaimed land. An experiment was conducted to study the effects of traditional compound fertilizer (Fc) or bio-organic fertilizer (Ft), alone or in combination with biochar addition (6.85 t·ha-1 and 13.7 t·ha-1) on the growth, photosynthesis, yield and quality of Chinese small cabbage (CSC) plant. The results showed that compared to single compound fertilizer application, bio-organic fertilizer application promoted the plant's growth, indicated by the plant height, stem diameter and leaf area index (LAI), and significantly enhanced the yield and dry matter accumulation of CSC. In terms of the combination with biochar, the promoting effects were positively related to the biochar addition rate in the compound fertilizer group, while it was better to apply bio-organic fertilizer alone or in combination with biochar at a low rate of 6.85 t·ha-1. The highest yield was obtained under B2Fc and B1Ft with 29.41 and 37.93 t·ha-1, respectively, and the yield under B1Ft was significantly higher than that under B2Fc. The water productivity (WP) significantly improved in response to both kinds of fertilizer combined with biochar at 6.85 t·ha-1. There was a significant difference between the photosynthetic characteristics of plants treated with single-compound fertilizer and those treated with bio-organic fertilizer. The photosynthetic characteristics increased under compound fertilizer combined with biochar, while they regressed under bio-organic fertilizer combined with biochar. The quality of CSC, especially that of soluble sugars and total phenolics, improved under single bio-organic fertilizer application compared with that under single-compound fertilizer. The nitrite content of the plants increased with increasing biochar addition rate in both fertilizer groups. In conclusion, there is a significant promoting effect of applying bio-organic fertilizer to replace chemical fertilizer alone or combining compound fertilizer with low-rate biochar addition on newly reclaimed land. It is a recommended fertilization strategy to substitute or partially substitute chemical fertilizer with bio-organic fertilizer combined with biochar in newly reclaimed land, and it is of great significance to achieve fertilizer reduction.

Effect of bio-organic fertilizer derived from agricultural waste resources on soil properties and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield in semi-humid drought-prone regions

Water stress, improper fertilization practices, and agricultural waste pollution severely reduce soil fertility and limit agricultural sustainability on the Loess Plateau. Organic fertilizer application is an efficient method for improving soil water and nutrient availability and grain yield in semi-arid and arid areas. However, the impact of bio-organic fertilizer derived from agricultural waste on soil characteristics and wheat yield and the optimum bio-organic fertilizer substitution rate in semi-humid drought-prone areas remain unclear. A two-year field study was conducted to explore the effect of combined bio-organic and chemical fertilizer application on soil moisture, hydraulic properties, soil structure, soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), grain yield, and water productivity (WP). Six different treatments were designed: no fertilization (CK), conventional chemical fertilization (CF), and bio-organic fertilizer treatments substituting 25% (OF25%), 50% (OF50%), 75% (OF75%), and 100% (OF100%) of the chemical N fertilizer. From the seedling to over wintering stage, the OF75% and OF100% treatments generally improved soil water storage (SWS) and soil water content (SWC) within the 0–100 cm soil layer compared to the CK and CF treatments across both growing seasons. Bio-organic fertilizer substitution significantly reduced soil bulk density by 4.0–5.6% and enhanced soil porosity by 4.2–5.9% in the 0–40 cm soil layer. Moreover, bio-organic fertilizer substitution significantly increased soil saturated hydraulic conductivity and water content, improved aggregate size distribution, and enhanced SOC and TN contents in both years. The OF75% treatment produced the highest aboveground biomass, yield components, grain yields, and WP, attributed to the improved soil physical environment and nutrient contents. Notably, the OF75% treatment increased the average wheat yield and WP by 21.1% and 24.9%, respectively, relative to the CF treatment across both growing seasons. The measured soil properties strongly correlated with wheat yield, yield components, and WP. Thus, the OF75% treatment is an appropriate and promising fertilization management strategy to alleviate water stress, improve soil properties, and promote crop production in semi-humid drought-prone regions.

The effect of liquid bio-organic fertiizer on the productivity of ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri) leaf biomass

Ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri) is an endemic species in East Kalimantan known as ulin by the local community. Ironwood is a protected and slow-growing species. It is essential to look for an alternative use in less period. Ironwood young leaves have been used traditionally as a decoction with diuretic and hair-blackening properties. Such usage provides an opportunity to utilize ironwood without cutting down trees. As a reason for leaves sustainability, it is necessary to stimulate the formation of leaves, one of which is to use liquid bio-organic fertilizer. This study aimed to determine the effect of liquid bio-organic fertilizer on increasing the growth and yield of young ironwood leaves in nurseries. Fifty ironwood seedlings were given 5 ml of liquid bio-organic fertilizer every month, and the other 50 seedlings were not given any fertilizer. The number of young leaves was recorded in the third and ninth months, while the young leaves were harvested in the sixth and twelfth months. This research showed that liquid bio-organic fertilizer increased height increments by up to 107.58%, diameter increment by up to 20.36%, the number of iron wood shoots up to 184.62%, and it also increased the weight of young leaves that can be harvested by up to 588.89%. There were any differences effects of liquid bio-organic fertilizer applied with and without bio-organic fertilizer on the growth and yield of young ironwood leaves. Ironwood shoots’ growth and yield by application of liquid bio-organic fertilizer are better than nonliquid bio-organic fertilizer.

Long-term bioorganic and organic fertilization improved soil quality and multifunctionality under continuous cropping in watermelon

Continuous cropping has can majorly damage the soil ecosystem, leading to an increased prevalence of pathogenic microorganisms and severe yield losses for watermelons. Multiple prevention strategies have been adopted to overcome this obstacle, among which the application of bioorganic fertilizer can improve microbiome deterioration. However, the response of soil ecosystem multifunctionality and soil quality to fertilizer regimes under continuous cropping remains poorly understood. In this study, based on an 8-year field experiment, we evaluated soil health and ecosystem multifunctionality under different fertilization treatments. Long-term bio-organic fertilization preserved soil electrical conductivity and increased total Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ca, and Mg, total and available nutrients, and enzyme activities compared with those in unfertilized control (CK) and chemical fertilizer treatments. Enzyme activities and yield rapidly changed, indicating their sensitivity to these management practices. Conversely, soil pH, biodiversity, medium/trace elements, and total NPK content were more resistant to change than enzyme activities, suggesting higher stability over time. The area of soil quality index under bio-organic fertilization was 1.2–2.9 times larger than that under CK treatment. Applying biological organic fertilizer and a mixture of chemical and organic fertilizers improved the multifunctionality decline caused by continuous cropping by 1.1–1.4 times, whereas the effect of the chemical fertilizer was weak. Soil health was positively correlated with ecosystem multifunctionality. These findings suggest that long-term bioorganic and organic fertilization is an effective strategy for improving soil quality and multifunctionality in continuous watermelon crops while also contributing toward a more sustainable agricultural system.

Soil Disturbing Agent-Creation and Application of “G15” Series Products

Diseases caused by two or more soil-borne pathogens are called compound soil-borne diseases. We have pioneered the "root splitter" and the imaging analysis system, providing a new tool for studying compound soil-borne diseases and a new method for evaluating crop resistance and pesticide (fertilizer) efficacy, and laying a foundation for the development of microbial agents, pesticides, and fertilizers. On this basis, we have developed a range of soil-borne disease disturbance agents “G15”, including a series of bio-organic fertilizers, liquid fertilizers and immune inducers. a) Microecological control series of bio-organic fertilizer: a new method of strain culture and classification screening based on the information of main components of organic fertilizer materials was used to obtain strains with high matching degree with organic materials. Then the process optimization technology was renewed by the ferulic acid rapid detection system. Through the 2-hour rapid detection and 30-day rapid optimization, the qualification rate of products is over 95%. It also standardized the basic operation methods and application doses for different crops and different application methods, and stabilized the application effect of products. The application of bioorganic fertilizers significantly reduced the abundance of pathogenic fungi and bacteria in the soil, and significantly inhibited the development of Solanaceae and Cucurbits wilt in the field (Figure 1A & 1B). b) Liquid fertilizer series products: liquid fertilizer with large, medium and trace elements, including nanometer silicon, ionic boron, ionic calcium, macroelement water-soluble fertilizer etc, which can improve crop quality and yield, increase disease resistance. We found that nano-silicon, ionic boron and ionic calcium can significantly promote the growth and disease resistance of grape (Figure 2). c) Salicylic Acid (SA), an immune inducer product, can improve the microbiological structure of soil by flushing with basic fertilizer; Foliar spraying can promote the expression of crop resistance genes, enhance the ability of drought resistance, salt resistance, oxidation resistance and heavy metal resistance, and improve the stress resistance and disease resistance of crops; Soaking or spraying can store the harvested fruits and keep them fresh; Combined with liquid fertilizer series products, crops can be put on the market early. However, SA is a natural product widely used in the plant kingdom and has a wide range of regulatory effects on plant resistance and growth. SA is slightly soluble in water and easily soluble in ethanol, ether and chloroform, so the concentration of SA solution is currently limited and the highest concentration can reach only 8%. Therefore, the concentration of SA and a higher proportion of ethanol in the solution limit the wide use of SA solution. In this study, we added willow bark to an aqueous solution containing PH 2.0-3.5 and soaked it at room temperature under the action of ultrasound and electrostatic field, which promoted the dissolution of water-soluble components and inhibited the dissolution of SA. After filtering the aqueous solution, polyethylene glycol was added to increase the solubility of SA, and finally the SA solution with a concentration of more than 12% was obtained. In order to verify the effect of the high content of SA on improving crop yield and ripening. We applied the leaf spray method to immature tomatoes in the field. The results showed that the total weight of 30 tomatoes in the treatment group was 7.4 kg, while in the control group it was 5.55 kg, an increase of 32.97%. The tomatoes in the treatment group were red in a wide range and reached the level of natural ripeness, while the tomatoes in the control group were cyan in a wide range and were not yet ripe. In addition, the average sugar content of tomatoes in the treatment group was 7.33, while it was 5.85 in the control group (Figure 3). The results suggest that spraying with a highly concentrated SA solution before flowering and harvesting can increase the yield and sweetness of tomatoes, adjust the uniform ripening time of tomatoes, effectively reduce tomato cultivation obstacles and harvesting costs, and improve the benefits of cultivation. Therefore, in order to prevent and control the compound soil-borne diseases caused by multiple soil-borne pathogens, we proposed a combination of bio-organic fertilizers, liquid fertilizers with large, medium and trace elements and immune inducers to regulate the composition of soil microbial community, improve the soil ecological environment and promote crop growth to comprehensively control the compound soil-borne diseases.

Effects of Bio-Organic Fertilizer on Soil Infiltration, Water Distribution, and Leaching Loss under Muddy Water Irrigation Conditions

This study analyzes the soil water infiltration characteristics under muddy water irrigation and bio-organic fertilizer conditions in the current context of muddy water irrigation rarely being used in agricultural production and in combination with the problems of water resource shortages and low soil fertility in arid and semi-arid regions. An indoor one-dimensional soil column infiltration device was used for studying the effects of four muddy water sediment concentration levels (ρ0: 0; ρ1: 4%; ρ2: 8%; ρ3: 12%) and four bio-organic fertilizer levels (FO0: 0; FO1: 2250 kg·hm−2; FO2: 4500 kg·hm−2; sFO3: 6750 kg·hm−2) on soil water infiltration, evaporation characteristics, and leaching loss. The results demonstrated that a higher muddy water sediment concentration and fertilization level resulted in a smaller wetting front distance and cumulative infiltration amount within the same time, but the infiltration reduction rate (η) gradually increased. The three infiltration models (Kostiakov, Philip, and Horton) were fitted, and it was discovered that all three had good fitting results (R2 > 0.8), with the Kostiakov model displaying the best fit and the Horton model exhibiting the worst fit. The cumulative evaporation amount and evaporation time in muddy water irrigation and fertilization conditions was consistent with the Black and Rose evaporation models (R2 > 0.9), the Black model was proved to be higher than the Rose model. In comparison to ρ0, muddy water irrigation increased conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) in the leaching solution, but it reduced cumulative evaporation, soil moisture content, the uniformity coefficient of soil water distribution, and leaching solution volume. Compared with FO0, the application of bio-organic fertilizer increased soil water content and reduced soil water evaporation while also reducing the leaching solution volume, conductivity, and TDS in the leaching solution. The results of this research can provide scientific reference for the efficient utilization of muddy water irrigation and the rational application of bio-organic fertilizer.

Effect of biochar and bioorganic fertilizer on the microbial diversity in the rhizosphere soil of Sesbania cannabina in saline-alkaline soil.

Biochar and bioorganic fertilizer (BOF) application in agriculture has garnered increasing interest recently. However, the effects of biochar and BOF on rhizosphere soil microecology, especially in a region with saline-alkaline soil, remain largely unexplored. In this study, we performed Illumina-based 16S rRNA sequencing to investigate the effects of biochar with or without BOF addition, as well as at different addition rates and particles sizes, on the microecology of saline-alkaline rhizosphere soil. In the field experiment, biochar and BOF application altered the rhizosphere soil microecology. Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi accounted for >60% of the total bacterial population in each treatment. In the different treatments, Actinobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria were the predominant classes; Micromonosporales and Vicinamibacterales were the dominant orders; norank_f__Geminicoccaceae and Micromonosporaceae were the most abundant families; and Micromonospora and norank_f_Geminicoccaceae were the predominant genera. Application of biochar with or without BOF decreased soil electrical conductivity (EC) by 7% -11.58% only at the depth of 10 cm below the surface, again, soil EC can be significantly reduced by an average of 4% at 10 cm depth soil after planting Sesbania cannabina. Soil organic carbon, organic matter, available potassium, and available phosphorus contents had significant effects on the soil bacterial community structure. Co-application of biochar and BOF resulted in the greatest improvement of rhizosphere soil microecology, either by promoting plant growth or improving the nutrition and physicochemical properties of soil, followed by BOF alone and biochar alone. Additionally, higher application rate of biochar was better than lower application rate, and fine biochar had a stronger effect than coarse biochar. These results provide guidance for the development of new saline-alkaline soil remediation strategies.

Effect of fertilizer type on antibiotic resistance genes by reshaping the bacterial community and soil properties

Conventional and bio-organic fertilizers play an important role in maintaining soil health and promoting crop growth. However, the effect of organic fertilizers on the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the vegetable cropping system has been largely overlooked. In this study, we investigated the impacts of soil properties and biotic factors on ARG profiles by analyzing ARG and bacterial communities in vegetable copping soils with a long-term history of manure and bio-organic fertilizer application. The ARG abundance in the soil was significantly increased by 116% with manure application compared to synthetic NPK fertilizer application. This finding was corroborated by our meta-analysis that the longer the duration of manure application, the greater the response of increased soil ARG abundance. However, bio-organic fertilizers containing Trichoderma spp. Significantly reduced ARG contamination by 31% compared to manure application. About half of the ARG variation was explained by changes in bacterial abundance and structure, followed by soil properties. The mitigation of ARG by Trichoderma spp. Is achieved by altering the structure of the bacterial community and weakening the close association between bacteria and ARG prevalence. Taken together, these findings shed light on the contribution of bio-organic fertilizers in mitigating ARG contamination in agricultural soils, which can help manage the ecological risk posed by ARG inputs associated with manure application.

Potential Novel Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria for Bio-Organic Fertilizer Production in the Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) in Malaysia

The present study aimed to characterize the potential plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) based on biochemical tests based on eight bacterial isolates, and to identify potential PGPR based on the 16S rRNA sequencing molecular method. Eight potential PGPR strains (UPMC1166, UPMC1168, UPMC1254, UPMC1376, UPMC1389, UPMC1393, UPMC703 and UPMC704) isolated from the soils in the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) estates across Malaysia were selected because of their most PGPR activities. They were screened for nitrogen fixation, phosphate and potassium solubilization, and production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). All isolates showed the ability to grow between pH 2 to 9 and survive from 2 to 15% (w/v) of the salt medium. Among the isolated PGPRs, four PGPRs (UPMC1166, UPMC1168, UPMC1254 and UPMC1389) showed the ability to fix nitrogen and had the potential to produce IAA. Furthermore, two PGPRs (UPMC1393 and UPMC1376) demonstrated the ability to solubilize phosphate, while three PGPRs (UPMC703, UPMC704, and UPMC1393) showed the ability to solubilize potassium. Therefore, all the above eight PGPR isolates can benefit the oil palm cultivation industry. The molecular identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that UPMC1166 was identified as Bacillus methylotrophicus; UPMC1168 as B. siamensis; UPMC1254 as B. subtilis; UPMC1389 as B. albus; UPMC1376 as Lactobacillus plantarum; UPMC1393 as B. marisflavi; UPMC703 as Burkhoderiaanthina and UPMC704 as B. metallica. These novel strains can be further investigated for their viability and effectiveness for bio-organic fertilizer production and application in the immature stage of oil palm growth.

Effect of long-term application of bioorganic fertilizer on the soil property and bacteria in rice paddy

The application of novel bioorganic fertilizer (BIO) has been established as a weed biocontrol strategy, and reduce herbicides pollution and negatively effects on agricultural ecosystems. However, its long-term influences on soil bacterial communities are unknown. Here, 16 S rRNA sequencing to identify the changes that occur in soil bacterial community and enzyme under BIO treatments after five years in a field experiment. BIO application effectively controlled weeds, however no obvious differences between treatments were observed under BIO-50, BIO-100, BIO-200 and BIO-400 treatment. Anaeromyxobacter and Clostridium_ sensu_ stricto_1 were the two dominant genera among BIO-treated soil samples. The BIO-800 treatment had a slight influence on the species diversity index, which was more remarkable after five years. The seven significantly-different genera between BIO-800 treatment and untreated soils included C._sensu_stricto_1, Syntrophorhabdus, Candidatus_Koribacter, Rhodanobacter, Bryobacter, Haliangium, Anaeromyxobacter. In addition, BIO application had different effects on soil enzymatic activities and chemical properties. The extractable P and pH saliency correlated with Haliangium and C._Koribacter, and C._sensu_stricto_1 observably correlated with exchangeable K, hydrolytic N and organic matter. Taken together, our data suggest that BIO application effectively controlled weeds and a slight influence on soil bacterial communities and enzymes. These findings expand our knowledge of the application of BIO as widely used as a sustainable weed control in rice paddy.

Bio-organic fertilizer promoted phytoremediation using native plant leymus chinensis in heavy Metal(loid)s contaminated saline soil

Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) contaminated saline soil appeared around the world, however, remediation regarding these collected from field conditions remains unknown. Native plants cultivation and bio-organic fertilizer (BOF) application were two efficient tools for soil amelioration. Herein, a pot experiment was conducted to examine the feasibility of a native plant (Leymus chinensis) for phytoremediation, and investigate the impacts of lignite based bio-organic fertilizer (LBOF) and manure based bio-organic fertilizer (MBOF) on phytoremediation of the soil contaminated by Pb, Cd, As, Zn, Cu, Ca2+, and SO42−. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of L. chinensis and highlighted the positive impacts of BOF according to the improved plant growth, HMs phytostabilization, salt removal, and soil properties. LBOF and MBOF changed soil microbiome to assist phytoremediation in addition to physiological modulation. Having enhanced fungal and bacterial richness respectively, LBOF and MBOF recruited various plant growth promoting rhizobacteria with different functions, and shifted microbial co-occurrence networks and keystone taxa towards these different but beneficial forms. Structural equation models comprehensively reveled the strategy discrepancy of LBOF and MBOF to regulate the plant biomass, HMs uptake, and soil salt. In summary, L. chinensis coupled with BOF, especially LBOF, was a effective strategy to remediate HMs contaminated saline soil.

Mediating Effect of Bio-Organic Fertilizer on the Physiological Characteristics of “Qi-Nan” Agarwood from Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.)

This study examines the impact of bio-organic fertilizers on the physiological characteristics and leaf nutrient content of “Qi-Nan” agarwood seedlings. The aim is to provide a theoretical foundation for the efficient cultivation of “Qi-Nan”. The experiment was conducted under field conditions using a Randomized complete block design. The control group received no fertilization, while the three fertilizer-treated groups received vermicompost, sheep manure, or microbial organic fertilizer. The results indicate that the application of bio-organic fertilizer significantly promoted the growth of plant height and diameter, increased the contents of soluble proteins, soluble sugar, chlorophyll, and leaf nutrients; and decreased the contents of free proline, peroxidase, malondialdehyde, and other stress indices. Redundancy analysis showed that the main factors affecting the seedlings height and diameter were free proline, chlorophyll, total nitrogen, and total potassium. Principal component analysis and membership function analysis revealed significant variations in growth, physiological characteristics, and nutrient content among the three fertilizer groups and the control group, with vermicompost > microbial organic fertilizer > sheep manure > no fertilization. In conclusion, biological organic fertilizer significantly promotes the growth of “Qi-Nan” seedlings, and vermicompost is the most effective fertilizer in this experiment.

Micro-moistening irrigation combined with bio-organic fertilizer: An adaptive irrigation and fertilization strategy to improve soil environment, edible Rose yield, and nutritional quality

Excessive water and fertilizer management strategy was main factor restricting high-quality production of edible Roses. The objective of this study was therefore to explore a combination of micro-irrigation method and bio-organic fertilizer application amount suitable for high-quality production of edible Roses. A two-year greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects micro-irrigation method and bio-organic fertilizer application on soil environment, photosynthetic characteristics, yield, and nutritional quality of edible Rose in 2019 and 2020. The experiment treatments consisted of three micro-irrigation methods [micro-sprinkler irrigation (SI), drip irrigation (DI), and micro-moistening irrigation (MI)] and four bio-organic fertilizer supplementation levels (0, 5000, 10000, and 15000 kg ha−1, labeled as BF0, BFL, BFM, and BFH). The results indicated that MIBFM significantly improved soil water content, soil organic matter, pH, and the number of bacteria, fungus, and actinomycetes in the edible Rose field among all treatments. The MIBFM could improve net photosynthetic rate and leaf instantaneous water use efficiency of edible Rose compared with MIBFH. The flower weight, average flower diameter, and edible Rose yield were larger in MIBFM than those of MIBFH in 2019 and 2020. The MIBFM improved total sugar, flavonoids, vitamin C, and total amino acids of edible Rose compared with MIBFH. According to analyzing the relationships between photosynthesis, soil environment, flower yield, and quality among all treatments, we found MIBFM promoted edible Rose production by improving soil environment. The membership function method was used to comprehensively evaluate the nutritional quality of edible Roses, we recommended that the combination of micro-moistening irrigation (MI) combined with bio-organic fertilizer application amount (10000 kg ha−1) (BFM) would be an adaptive irrigation and fertilization management strategy for improving soil environment and edible Rose production in Southwest China.

Changes in the Microbial Structure of the Root Soil and the Yield of Chinese Baby Cabbage by Chemical Fertilizer Reduction with Bio-Organic Fertilizer Application.

Using high-throughput sequencing, this study aimed to explore the response of soil microbial community and Chinese baby cabbage yield to the reduction of chemical fertilizers combined with bio-organic fertilizer. Our experiments consisted of conventional fertilizer (CK), 30% chemical fertilizer reduction + 6,000 kg/ha bio-organic fertilizer (T1), 30% chemical fertilizer reduction + 9,000 kg/ha bio-organic fertilizer (T2), 40% chemical fertilizer reduction + 6,000 kg/ha bio-organic fertilizer (T3), and 40% chemical fertilizer reduction + 9,000 kg/ha bio-organic fertilizer (T4). Compared with CK, soil microbial diversity and richness were higher for all treatments with added bio-organic fertilizer. Principle coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that the bacterial and fungal communities in T2 and T4 were similar to each other. Redundancy and Spearman's correlation analyses of microbial communities and soil physicochemical properties revealed that reductions in chemical fertilizer rate combined with bio-organic fertilizer had a stronger impact on the fungal than the bacterial community. They also increased the relative abundance of the dominant bacterial and fungal phyla. Chinese baby cabbage yield was relatively higher under the combined bio-organic fertilizer plus reduced chemical fertilizer rate with T2 showing the highest yield. Therefore, this approach is feasible for sustainable agricultural, cost-effective and profitable crop production. IMPORTANCE Chemical fertilizers are commonly used for agriculture, though bio-organic fertilizers may be more efficient. We found that a mixture of bio-organic and moderately reduced chemical fertilizer was more effective than chemical fertilizer alone, as it raised the Chinese baby cabbage yield. Further, the presence of bio-organic fertilizer enhanced overall soil physicochemistry, as well as improved the beneficial bacterial and fungal abundance and diversity. Thus, we found that fertilizer combination sustainably & cost-effectively improves crop & soil quality.

Bioorganic fertilizer promotes pakchoi growth and shapes the soil microbial structure.

As a functional probiotic, Bacillus subtilis can promote crop growth and improve nutrient utilization by various mechanisms, so it has been made into bioorganic fertilizer as a replacement for chemical fertilizer. However, the effects of B. subtilis bioorganic fertilizer application on the yield and quality of commercial crops of Brassica chinensis L., the soil physicochemical properties and the microflora have not been clarified. In this study, pot experiments were conducted using Brassica chinensis L. plants with four fertilization treatments: control without fertilization (CK), chemical fertilizer (CF), organic fertilizer (OF), and bioorganic fertilizer containing B. subtilis (BF). After 30 days of pot experiment, the results showed that BF efficiently improved plant height and biomass (1.20- and 1.93-fold, respectively); as well as significantly increasing soil available potassium and pH value. Using high-throughput sequencing, we examined the bacterial and fungal communities in the soil, and found that their diversity was remarkablely reduced in the BF treatment compared to CK group. A principal coordinate analysis also showed a clear separation of bacterial and fungal communities in the BF and CK groups. After application of B. subtilis bioorganic fertilizer, some beneficial bacteria (such as Bacillus and Ammoniphilus) and fungi (Trichoderma and Mortierella) were enriched. A network analysis indicated that bacteria were the dominant soil microbes and the presence of B. subtilis stimulated the colonization of beneficial microbial communities. In addition, predictive functional profiling demonstrated that the application of bioorganic fertilizer enhanced the function of mineral element metabolism and absorption and increased the relative abundance of saprotrophs. Overall, the application of bioorganic fertilizer effectively changed the soil microflora, improved the soil available potassium and pH value, and boosted the yield of Brassica chinensis L. This work has valuable implications for promoting the safe planting of facility vegetables and the sustainable development of green agriculture.

WGCNA analysis revealing molecular mechanism that bio-organic fertilizer improves pear fruit quality by increasing sucrose accumulation and reducing citric acid metabolism.

It’s been long known that the application of organic fertilizer (OF) and bio-organic fertilizer (BF) which containing beneficial microorganisms to pear trees can both significantly improve fruit quality and yield. In order to reveal the mechanism of BF and OF regulating fruit growth and quality in pear, the effects of BF and OF on the photosynthetic characteristics and the accumulation of major sugars and organic acids of the pear fruit were quantified compared with chemical fertilizer (CF). Additionally, the molecular mechanisms regulating pear fruit development and quality were studied through transcriptome analysis. The three treatments were conducted based on the same amounts of nitrogen supply. The results showed that compared with CF, BF and OF treatments increased the fruit yield, and also significantly improved the photosynthesis efficiency in pear. BF and OF both significantly increased the sucrose content but significantly decreased the fructose and glucose content within the pear fruit. The amount of malic acid was significantly higher in OF treatment. Compared with CF and OF, BF significantly increased the sugar-acid ratio and thus improved the fruit quality. Transcriptome analysis and weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) revealed that the sugar metabolism of fruits applied with the BF was enhanced compared with those applied with CF or OF. More specifically, the expression of SDH (Sorbitol dehydrogenase) was higher in BF, which converts sorbitol into fructose. For both of the OF and BF, the transcript abundance of sugar transporter genes was significantly increased, such as SOT (Sorbitol transporter), SUT14 (Sugar transport 14), UDP-GLUT4 (UDP-glucose transporter 4), UDP-SUT (UDP-sugar transporter), SUC4 (Sucrose transport 4), SUT7 (Sugar transporter 7), SWEET10 and SWEET15 (Bidirectional sugar transporter), which ensures sugar transportation. The genes involved in organic acid metabolism showed decreased transcripts abundance in both BF and OF treatments, such as VAP (Vesicle-associated protein) and cyACO (Cytosolic aconitase), which reduce the conversion from succinate to citric acid, and decrease the conversion from citric acid to malic acid in the TCA cycle (Tricarboxylic Acid cycle) through Pept6 (Oligopeptide transporter). In conclusion, the application of BF and OF improved fruit quality by regulating the expression of sugar and organic acid metabolism-related genes and thus altering the sugar acid metabolism. Both BF and OF promote sucrose accumulation and citric acid degradation in fruits, which may be an important reason for improving pear fruit quality. The possible mechanism of bio-organic fertilizer to improve fruit quality was discussed.

Enhancing soil fertility and lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) growth using bio-organic fertilizer

Acid soils contain high concentrations of aluminum and ferrous ions, which limit crop growth and the available plant nutrients. The current work was to determine the effects of bio-organic fertilizer (BOF) application on soil quality and the growth of blueberry cultivated in acid soil. A completely randomized block design was arranged, with four doses of BOF (0, 2, 4, and 6 t ha–1 yr–1). Each treatment was carried out with four replicates. In the present work, soil quality properties such as pH, soil organic matter, available phosphorus, total nitrogen, aluminum (Al3+), and iron (Fe2+) were measured. Additionally, the influence of organic fertilizer on the growth of blueberry (plant height, number of shoots, and leaves) was also investigated. The results indicated that both the rates of BOF (4 and 6 t ha−1 yr–1) significantly improved soil organic matter and available phosphorus. Also, BOF application greatly decreased the soil concentrations of Al3+ and Fe2+ compared to the control treatment. Similarly, 12 months after planting, the number of shoots and leaves was improved in the pots with BOF compared to that without BOF addition. From the results of this study, we recommend using BOF as the best measure for enhancing soil health and blueberry growth.
