Preparation and identification of a fluorescent probe with CsPbBr3perovskite quantum dots and CD44v6 specific peptide for gastric cancer imaging.

Since the sensitivity and accuracy of traditional detection for early gastric cancer diagnosis are still insufficient, it is significant to continuously optimize the optical molecular imaging detection technology based on an endoscopic platform. The signal intensity and stability of traditional chemical fluorescent dyes are low, which hinders the clinical application of molecular imaging detection technology. This work developed a probe based on perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and peptide ligands. By utilizing CsPbBr3perovskite PQDs modified by azithromycin (AZI), combined with the specific polypeptide ligand of CD44v6, a gastric cancer biomarker, the perovskite-based probe (AZI-PQDs probe) which can specifically identify gastric cancer tumor was prepared. Owing to the high photoluminescence quantum yield of CsPbBr3PQDs, the naked eye can observe the imaging under the excitation of the hand-held ultraviolet light source. AZI-PQDs probe can accurately identify gastric cancer cells, tissues, and xenograft models with experiments ofex vivoandin vivofluorescence imaging detection. It also exhibited low toxicity and immunogenicity, indicating the safety of the probe. This work provides a probe combined with cancer specificity and a reliable fluorescent signal that has the potential for application in gastric cancer optical molecular imaging.

Broadband self-powered MoS2/PdSe2/WSe2 PSN heterojunction photodetector for high-performance optical imaging and communication

Two-dimensional (2D) semi-metal transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have drawn significant attention for their distinctive physical properties. However, the inherent high dark current of these materials and the single structure of detectors hinder the further development of photodetectors with high performance. Here, we construct a PSN (p-type semiconductor/semi-metal/n-type semiconductor) architecture by sandwiching 2D semi-metal between two semiconductor layers. In this architecture, the top and bottom layers generate an internal built-in electric field, while the middle layer serves as an absorption layer for low-energy photons and facilitates the dissociation of photo-generated carriers. As a result, the heterojunction device demonstrates a wide spectrum optical response from visible to infrared light (405 nm to 1550 nm) without requiring an external voltage. Working in self-powered mode at room temperature, the device achieves a responsivity of 0.56 A/W, a detectivity of 5.63 × 1011 Jones, and a rapid response speed of 190/74 µs. Additionally, the device shows potential for applications in fast optical communication and multi-wavelength optical imaging. This work presents a novel approach for developing a new type of broadband, self-powered, high-performance miniaturized semi-metal-based photodetector.

Polarized and Directional Electroluminescence from Organic Light‐Emitting Devices by Using a Bifunctional Meta‐Electrode

AbstractOrganic light‐emitting devices (OLEDs) with polarized and directional emission are highly desired for their promising applications in optical imaging, optical communication, and immersive visual technologies. Existing implementation methods based on free space bulk optical elements suffer from significant power loss, limiting their practical applications. Here, a bifunctional meta‐electrode is proposed by integrating a metasurface consisting of Ag periodic corrugations onto the indium tin oxide (ITO) anode to simultaneously realize the functions of charge carrier injection and photon management in the OLEDs. Highly polarized and directional light emission is demonstrated while maintaining a high device efficiency using the meta‐electrode. The electroluminescence with a polarization extinction ratio of 5 is achieved by judiciously engineering the polarization‐dependent Purcell factor of the resonant cavity constructed by the meta‐electrode. Meanwhile, the directional light emission with a divergence angle of 10° can be obtained by the efficient out‐coupling of surface plasmon‐polariton mode. The light beam can be collimated in one direction by using 1D nanogratings and in two directions by using 2D nanopillars, respectively.

Interference patterns of two-photon excited fluorescence by spatial beam shaping

We report on two-photon excited fluorescence interference patterns produced by spatial laser beam shaping. Thereto, a focused spatially modulated laser beam component is overlapped with an unfocused Gaussian beam component, and both are directed on a cuvette filled with dye. The phase retardance between the two common path laser components is precisely adjusted by a 2D liquid crystal modulator. With this method it is possible to generate various fluorescence patterns which exhibit sharp features and a high contrast due to constructive and destructive interference of a two-photon excitation process. The developed spatial shaping interference technique with two-photon excitations has a high potential for optical and biophotonic imaging applications.

Review of Polarized Light‐Spin/Dipole Interactions: Fundamental Physics and Application in Circularly Polarized Detecting

AbstractCircularly polarized light (CPL) has attracted great attention due to its unique electromagnetic vector, which possesses potential practical applications in optical imaging, biometrics, and other interdisciplinary areas. At present, many materials with spontaneous CPL emitting have been extensively studied and reviewed for the generation of CPL. For the detection of CPL, mainly concentrate on the technical problems, that is, how to combine circularly polarized optical active materials with device structures to meet detection needs. Essentially, the resolution of CPL depends on the interaction between CPL and matter, Herein, the interactive modes including polarized light‐spin and light‐dipole (or charge) interactions in devices are summarized. Also, direct and indirect interactions of polarized light‐spin are presented. Meanwhile, the progress of light‐spin/dipole interaction dependence of CPL detectors is analyzed based on artificial structures of photoconductors, photodiodes, and photo field effect transistors. It is hoped that the review can broaden the bridge between the fundamental photon‐spin‐dipole interaction and CPL detectors with high performance, and then deepen the understanding of CPL detection and promote the development of CPL detectors.

Far-field sub-diffraction focusing and controlled focus shaping of circularly polarized light using a dielectric phase plate

In recent years, sub-diffraction focusing has received substantial attention due to its versatility. However, achieving a flexible sub-diffraction focusing in the far field remains stimulating. Existing techniques either require complex fabrication facilities or are limited to the short focal length and high numerical aperture (NA) of the imaging system. Here, we introduce an optimization method for sub-diffraction focusing of a circularly polarized beam in the far field with a lens of large focal length. A cost-effective dielectric phase plate serves the purpose. By employing a phase plate composed of a thin layer of dielectric Si3N4, the phase of the propagating beam is modulated in the beam’s cross-section, which is divided into two regions of the opposite phase by the plate. A sub-diffraction focusing is achieved for a proper tunning between the two regions. In addition to sub-diffraction focusing, the phase plate is also capable of shaping the focus into a doughnut-shaped and a flat-top profile in the far field. This design provides a simple solution for sub-diffraction focusing and focus shaping that will find potential applications in optical imaging, optical trapping, and material processing.

Multifaceted control of focal points along an arbitrary 3D curved trajectory

Metalenses can integrate the functionalities of multiple optical components thanks to the unprecedented capability of optical metasurfaces in light control. With the rapid development of optical metasurfaces, metalenses continue to evolve. Polarization and color play a very important role in understanding optics and serve as valuable tools for gaining insights into our world. Benefiting from the design flexibility of metasurfaces, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a super metalens that can realize multifaceted control of focal points along any 3D curved trajectory. The wavelengths and polarization states of all focal points are engineered in a desirable manner. The super metalens can simultaneously realize customized 3D positioning, polarization states, and wavelengths of focal points, which are experimentally demonstrated with incident wavelengths ranging from 501 to 700 nm. We further showcase the application of the developed super metalenses in 3D optical distance measurement. The compact nature of metasurfaces and unique properties of the proposed super metalenses hold promise to dramatically miniaturize and simplify the optical architecture for applications in optical metrology, imaging, detection, and security.

Controllable Preparation of Fused Silica Micro Lens Array through Femtosecond Laser Penetration-Induced Modification Assisted Wet Etching.

As an integrable micro-optical device, micro lens arrays (MLAs) have significant applications in modern optical imaging, new energy technology, and advanced displays. In order to reduce the impact of laser modification on wet etching, we propose a technique of femtosecond laser penetration-induced modification-assisted wet etching (FLIPM-WE), which avoids the influence of previous modification layers on subsequent laser pulses and effectively improves the controllability of lens array preparation. We conducted a detailed study on the effects of the laser single pulse energy, pulse number, and hydrofluoric acid etching duration on the morphology of micro lenses and obtained the optimal process parameters. Ultimately, two types of fused silica micro lens arrays with different focal lengths but the same numerical aperture (NA = 0.458) were fabricated using the FLPIM-WE technology. Both arrays exhibited excellent geometric consistency and surface quality (Ra~30 nm). Moreover, they achieved clear imaging at various magnifications with an adjustment range of 1.3×~3.0×. This provides potential technical support for special micro-optical systems.

Towards clinical application of freehand optical ultrasound imaging

Freehand optical ultrasound (OpUS) imaging is an emerging ultrasound imaging paradigm that uses an array of fibre-optic, photoacoustic ultrasound sources and a single fibre-optic ultrasound detector to perform ultrasound imaging without the need for electrical components in the probe head. Previous freehand OpUS devices have demonstrated capability for real-time, video-rate imaging of clinically relevant targets, but have been hampered by poor ultrasound penetration, significant imaging artefacts and low frame rates, and their designs limited their clinical applicability. In this work we present a novel freehand OpUS imaging platform, including a fully mobile and compact acquisition console and an improved probe design. The novel freehand OpUS probe presented utilises optical waveguides to shape the generated ultrasound fields for improved ultrasound penetration depths, an extended fibre-optic bundle to improve system versatility and an overall ruggedised design with protective elements to improve probe handling and protect the internal optical components. This probe is demonstrated with phantoms and the first multi-participant in vivo imaging study conducted with freehand OpUS imaging probes, this represents several significant steps towards the clinical translation of freehand OpUS imaging.

Tutorial on phantoms for photoacoustic imaging applications.

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging technology that holds high promise in a wide range of clinical applications, but standardized methods for system testing are lacking, impeding objective device performance evaluation, calibration, and inter-device comparisons. To address this shortfall, this tutorial offers readers structured guidance in developing tissue-mimicking phantoms for photoacoustic applications with potential extensions to certain acoustic and optical imaging applications. The tutorial review aims to summarize recommendations on phantom development for PAI applications to harmonize efforts in standardization and system calibration in the field. The International Photoacoustic Standardization Consortium has conducted a consensus exercise to define recommendations for the development of tissue-mimicking phantoms in PAI. Recommendations on phantom development are summarized in seven defined steps, expanding from (1)general understanding of the imaging modality, definition of (2)relevant terminology and parameters and (3)phantom purposes, recommendation of (4)basic material properties, (5)material characterization methods, and (6)phantom design to (7)reproducibility efforts. The tutorial offers a comprehensive framework for the development of tissue-mimicking phantoms in PAI to streamline efforts in system testing and push forward the advancement and translation of the technology.

Generation of dual vortices with controlled topological charges based on spin-decoupled moiré metalens.

By their powerful talent in manipulating optical parameters, metasurfaces demonstrate great ability in the generation of the vortex beams. Until now, vortex beam generators constructed by metasurfaces mostly lack tunability, which reduces the scope of their applications. Here, spin-decoupled moiré metalenses composed of two cascaded all-dielectric metasurfaces are designed. Utilizing mathematical derivation and numerical simulation, dual vortices with variable topological charge can be generated under the incidence of orthogonal circularly polarized light by tuning the mutual rotation between the two cascaded metasurfaces. Meanwhile, vector vortex beams can be produced by superposition of dual focused vortices under the linearly polarized light illumination and whose vector polarized states can also be manipulated by mutual rotation. This work provides a flexible design strategy for continuous manipulation of singular beams, which have potential applications in optical communication, microparticle manipulation, and super-resolution imaging.

Interplay between a Heptamethine Cyanine Dye Sensitizer (IR806) and Lanthanide Upconversion Nanoparticles

AbstractLanthanide‐doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have attractive emission properties but suffer from weak light‐absorbing capacities and thereby relatively low brightnesses. This motivates using strongly absorbing dye molecules as antennas and sensitizers. However, despite much effort, understanding of this dye‐UCNP interplay is still limited. Major sensitization mechanisms are still under discussion, largely because there is a lack of effective means to observe key factors such as dark state transitions within the dyes. Here, a combined spectroscopic procedure is established to systematically investigate the photophysics behind the dye‐UCNP interaction, embracing fluorescence‐based transient‐state excitation‐modulation, lifetime and correlation spectroscopy, and spectrofluorometry/spectrophotometry. With this procedure the heptamethine cyanine dye IR806, a typical UCNP sensitizer is studied, its photophysical model is established, its photophysics in UCL‐sensitization‐related environments is deciphered, and the energy transfer from the IR806 singlet excited state to Yb3+ (UCNP sensitizer ion) can be identified as the dominant sensitization mechanism. These studies suggest that IR806 can form non‐emissive H‐aggregates at the nanoparticle surfaces, which can be dissociated after certain light excitation duration (typically>100 µs). Moreover, buildup of a non‐fluorescent, photo‐redox state of IR806 after longer irradiation times (10–100 ms) can deleteriously affect its UCL sensitization effect, inferring an optimal excitation duration for dye‐sensitized UCNPs, relevant for, e.g., optical imaging applications.

Deep Learning Enabled Transmission of Full‐Stokes Polarization Images Through Complex Media

AbstractPolarization images offer crucial functionalities across multiple scientific domains, providing access to physical information beyond conventional measures such as intensity, phase, and spectrum of light. However, the challenge of transmitting polarization images through complex media has restricted their application in optical communication and imaging. Here, a novel approach utilizing deep learning for the transmission of full‐Stokes polarization images through scattering media is presented. It is demonstrated that any input polarization image can be reconstructed in a single shot by employing only an intensity sensor. By supervised training of a deep neural network, high‐accuracy full‐Stokes reconstruction is achieved from the speckle pattern detected by an intensity camera. Leveraging the deep learning based polarization decoder, a polarization‐colored encoding scheme is devised to enable increased‐capacity data transmission through disordered channels. Fast, wavelength‐independent, on‐chip, polarization imaging in complex media enables the utilization of polarization‐structured light in multimode fibres and opaque materials, unlocking new possibilities in optical communication, cryptography, and quantum technology.

Dynamic control of optical skyrmions in cylindrical waveguide

In recent times, the optical skyrmions have received an increasing amount of interest owing to its applications in optical manipulation, super-resolution imaging and microscopy, quantum technologies. However, few studies are focused on the dynamic control of optical skyrmions. It is found that Neel-type photonic skyrmions were discovered in evanescent electromagnetic waves. Here, we find the Bloch-type skyrmions in a three-dimensional cylindrical waveguide. By modulating the amplitude ratio of two incident vortex beams, the new types of skyrmions such as Twisted-type skyrmions and Planar-type skyrmions can be found. Further more, we have also achieved arbitrary modulation ratios of internal spin components. It is believed that our findings greatly enrich the types of photonic skyrmions and provide a method to freely control the photonic skyrmions.

Optimizing focus: switchable modes and sub-diffraction spots in inverse circular Airy beams.

We report an experimental investigation into the tight-focusing characteristics of linearly polarized inverse circular Airy beams (ICABs). Our study reveals that tightly focused ICABs exhibit Bessel-like, needle-like, or dual foci profiles depending on whether the main ring's radius is smaller than, equal to, or larger than the critical radius. The emergence of the dual foci structure is attributed to the constrained entrance aperture of the microscope objective (MO). In contrast to traditional Gaussian beams (GBs), ICABs demonstrate remarkable advantages in terms of focal spot size. Notably, we observe a focal spot with a size of 245 nm, representing a 26.4% reduction compared to the diffraction limit. These unique properties open up promising avenues for potential applications in optical multi-plane particle trapping, conveying, and super-resolution optical imaging.

Generation of optical vortex beams with bandwidth exceeding 550 nm using a helical fiber needle exhibiting strong mode coupling.

A strong-coupling helical fiber needle (HFN) is proposed and demonstrated for the realization of bandwidth-enhanced broadband optical vortex beam (OVB) generation. The HFN is based on a single mode fiber and operates at the dispersion-turning-point (DTP) of the lowest radial order of the cladding mode (i.e., LP11) but with a remarkably high mode coupling efficiency. By utilizing this novel, to the best of our knowledge, HFN, successful generation of the first-order OVB with an impressive bandwidth up to 556 nm at -10 dB and a center wavelength of ∼1570 nm has been achieved. This represents the broadest bandwidth demonstrated among all fiber grating-based OVB generators to date. The proposed HFN-based OVB generator exhibits a relatively compact size, ultra-wide bandwidth, and customizable center wavelength, making it highly promising for applications in optical vortex-based endoscopic imaging as well as particle detection and manipulation.

Nonlinear generation of vector beams by using a compact nonlinear fork grating

Vectorial beams have attracted great interest due to their broad applications in optical micromanipulation, optical imaging, optical micromachining, and optical communication. Nonlinear frequency conversion is an effective technique to expand the frequency range of the vectorial beams. However, the scheme of existing methods to generate vector beams of the second harmonic (SH) lacks compactness in the experiment. Here, we introduce a new way to realize the generation of vector beams of SH by using a nonlinear fork grating to solve such a problem. We examine the properties of generated SH vector beams by using Stokes parameters, which agree well with theoretical predictions. Then we demonstrate that linearly polarized vector beams with arbitrary topological charge can be achieved by adjusting the optical axis direction of the half-wave plate (HWP). Finally, we measure the nonlinear conversion efficiency of such a method. The proposed method provides a new way to generate vector beams of SH by using a microstructure of nonlinear crystal, which may also be applied in other nonlinear processes and promote all-optical waveband applications of such vector beams.

A Nickel-doped, lanthanum gallium germanate-based phosphor as an ultra-broadband short-wavelength infrared region emitter for optical imaging

Short-wavelength infrared region light source (SWIR, λ = 1000–2000 nm) is useful for optical imaging of biological tissues for lack of auto-fluorescence, low intrinsic absorption, and low scattering. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and mechanistic studies of a Ni2+-doped, lanthanum gallium germanate-based phosphor, La3Ga5GeO14:Ni2+, that emits SWIR with an ultra-broad bandwidth emission of 1000–2000 nm, a full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of 340 nm, which covers near infrared-II and III regions. The analysis of crystal structure suggests that Ga3+ ions in [GaO6] octahedron lattices are replaced by Ni2+ ions, possibly due to the similar radius shared by both ions. The observed ultra-broadband SWIR luminescence with large Stokes shift is most likely originated from the influence of a strong crystal field on the extent of the cleavage of energy levels of Ni2+ ions, which is supported by the charge density data of [GaO6] octahedra in La3Ga5GeO14 derived from state density functional calculation. A SWIR pc-LED was constructed by packaging the La3Ga5GeO14:Ni2+ phosphor with a near-ultraviolet LED chip, and its potential application in optical imaging of human bodies was explored.

Complex transmission matrix retrieval for a highly scattering medium via regional phase differentiation

Accurately measuring the complex transmission matrix (CTM) of the scattering medium (SM) holds critical significance for applications in anti-scattering optical imaging, phototherapy, and optical neural networks. Non-interferometric approaches, utilizing phase retrieval algorithms, can robustly extract the CTM from the speckle patterns formed by multiple probing fields traversing the SM. However, in cases where an amplitude-type spatial light modulator is employed for probing field modulation, the absence of phase control frequently results in the convergence towards a local optimum, undermining the measurement accuracy. Here, we propose a high-accuracy CTM retrieval (CTMR) approach based on regional phase differentiation (RPD). It incorporates a sequence of additional phase masks into the probing fields, imposing a priori constraints on the phase retrieval algorithms. By distinguishing the variance of speckle patterns produced by different phase masks, the RPD-CTMR can effectively direct the algorithm towards a solution that closely approximates the CTM of the SM. We built a prototype of a digital micromirror device modulated RPD-CTMR. By accurately measuring the CTM of diffusers, we achieved an enhancement in the peak-to-background ratio of anti-scattering focusing by a factor of 3.6, alongside a reduction in the bit error rate of anti-scattering image transmission by a factor of 24. Our proposed approach aims to facilitate precise modulation of scattered optical fields, thereby fostering advancements in diverse fields including high-resolution microscopy, biomedical optical imaging, and optical communications.
