Facile preparation of superhydrophobic PVDF/MWCNTs distillation membranes: Synthesis, characteristics and separation performance

In recent years, membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as an effective solution to mitigate the high energy consumption associated with conventional fermentable sugar concentration processes. However, the inherent low mechanical strength of traditional organic membrane surfaces can result in issues related to membrane wetting during long-term MD experiments. In this work, superhydrophobic PVDF/MWCNTs (multi-walled carbon nanotubes) distillation membranes with high mechanical strength were prepared by a combination of templating and co-blending techniques. The process involved peeling the semi-gelation membrane from a sandpaper template, subsequently forming a high aspect ratio microstructure on the membrane surface via tearing and pulling. Additionally, the incorporation of MWCNTs further bolstered the mechanical strength of the membrane. At a peeling time of 90 s and a MWCNTs content of 0.08 wt%, the distillation membrane exhibited an impressive water contact angle of 153.2°, indicating it possess exceptional hydrophobicity while maintaining high mechanical strength. The separation performance of the prepared distillation membranes has been inspected by conducting both experimental analyses and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of the entire MD process. An appropriate elevation in both feed flow rate and temperature could effectively mitigate the problem of temperature and concentration polarization on the membrane surface. PVDF/MWCNTs distillation membrane demonstrated a modest reduction in permeate flux of about 11.69 % and a stable rejection rate exceeding 99.95 % throughout a 100-hour operational period, and it required only 15 h to concentration of aqueous glucose solution to 100 g/L, significantly enhancing the efficiency of the process. This study also employed a combination of experiments and simulations to optimizes the process conditions guiding the vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process and could provide guidance for the future application of membrane distillation in the concentration of sugar solutions.

Facile design of amphiphobic PVDF membranes utilizing synergy of pore structure and surface fluorination: A demonstration in membrane distillation

Amphiphobic membranes have attracted much attention in membrane distillation (MD) applications, due to its potential in simultaneously resisting membrane wetting and fouling when treating complex wastewater. The current amphiphobic membranes often require non-trivial design of multilevel re-entrant structure. Here we proposed a new class of amphiphobic membranes without multilevel re-entrant surface, by creating a composite poly(vinylidene fluoride)/polyvinyl alcohol/SiO2 membrane with asymmetric structure and well-controlled small surface pores via the NTIPS method, followed by direct fluorination via chemically binding the –OH of polyvinyl alcohol and low surface energy moieties 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl-triethoxysilane, assisted by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and trimesoyl chloride. The amphiphobic membrane showed superior liquid entry pressure above 5 bar with various simulated saline feeds containing surfactants and organic pollutants. The amphiphobic membrane demonstrated robust anti-wetting and anti-fouling performance through a series of 24-h direct contact MD experiments using the above feeds, presenting stable water flux and high rejection, e.g., flux of 50.6 kg/(m2·h) and rejection >99.9 % with feed containing 3.5 wt% NaCl, 1 mM FA, and 2 mM SDS. The results demonstrated the fabrication of robust amphiphobic membrane through simple procedure utilizing the synergy between pore structure and surface chemistry, inspiring more efforts to design adequate membranes for treating complex wastewater.

Membrane hydrophobicity enhanced by non-solvent induced separation strategy for improving membrane distillation performance

Development of high-performance hydrophobic layer using green and economic method is still urgently on demand for wide applications of membrane distillation (MD). In this study, a novel Janus membrane was prepared by electrospinning polystyrene with the water addition on the surface of hydrophilic electrospun nanofiber substrate. With increasing water content to 3 wt%, the hydrophobic layer is completely converted to be nanofiber-dominate morphology that could be beneficial for water vapor permeation during MD process. The surface roughness, water contact angle value and porosity of the hydrophobic layer are enhanced by the water addition, and the optimized Janus membrane with the hydrophobic layer prepared at the water content of 2 wt% could achieve a high water flux of 33.1 L/m2h and superior salt rejection of >99.9 % when 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was used as the feed solution. The as-prepared Janus membrane shows better performance stability and reusability than the control membrane (without the water addition) within the 24-h continuous operation duration. Our work demonstrates that the proper water addition could be used as a green strategy for fabricating efficient electrospun nanofiber membranes for the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) processes.

Chemical grafting of hydrophobic functional groups on polyvinylidene fluoride side chain for vacuum membrane distillation applications

Membrane distillation has emerged as a promising technique for treating high-saline water. However, the process suffers from drawbacks such as wettability and fouling due to insufficient hydrophobicity of the membrane material. A practical approach for preparing hydrophobic membranes should involve improving surface roughness and chemistry manipulation. Herein, we explored chemical grafting of different functional groups viz. 1-(4-vinyl benzyl)azepane, N-(4-vinyl benzyl)decan-1-amine and 3-(triethoxysilyl)-N-(4-vinyl benzyl) propane-1-amine on polyvinylidene fluoride side chain to improve the hydrophobic characteristics and vacuum distillation performance (permeate flux and salt rejection). The successful grafting of hydrophobic functional groups on the polyvinylidene fluoride side chain was confirmed by spectral analysis such as 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesised membranes were further characterised using morphology techniques (scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy) for hydrophobicity (water contact angle, liquid entry pressure) and thermal and mechanical stability. The desalination performance of membranes was assessed by varying feed concentration (2–8 % NaCl) and feed temperature (30–75 °C). The 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane grafted vinyl benzyl polyvinylidene fluoride membrane exhibited the highest flux (20.35 L m−2 h−1), salt rejection (99.99 %) at 4 % NaCl feed concentration and 60 °C feed temperature attributed to a well-arranged large number of pores and its hydrophobicity. The 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane grafted membrane exhibited the highest anti-fouling characteristic. Further, high flux and salt rejection of the synthesised membranes for vacuum membrane distillation operation were compared to membranes reported in the literature, demonstrating its potential for high saline water desalination.

Progress in module design for membrane distillation

There have been tremendous advances in membrane distillation (MD) since the concept was introduced in 1961: new membrane designs and process configurations have emerged, and its commercial viability has been evaluated in several pilot-scale studies. However, its high energy consumption has hindered its commercialization. One of the most promising ways to overcome this obstacle is to develop more energy-efficient membrane modules. The MD research community has therefore developed diverse new module configurations for hollow fiber and flat sheet membranes that increase the thermal energy efficiency of MD by minimizing thermal polarization, increasing mass transfer across the membrane, and improving heat recovery from the condensed vapor. This review summarizes the progress made in the design of hollow fiber and flat sheet membrane modules for MD applications. It begins with a brief introduction to MD and its configurations before describing developments in module fabrication and highlighting key areas where further research is needed.

Recent Advances in Dopamine-Based Membrane Surface Modification and Its Membrane Distillation Applications.

Surface modification of membranes is essential for improving flux and resistance to contamination for membranes. This is of great significance for membrane distillation, which relies on the vapor pressure difference across the membrane as the driving force. In recent years, biomimetic mussel-inspired substances have become the research hotspots. Among them, dopamine serves as surface modifiers that would achieve highly desirable and effective membrane applications owing to their unique physicochemical properties, such as universal adhesion, enhanced hydrophilicity, tunable reducibility, and excellent thermal conductivity. The incorporation of a hydrophilic layer, along with the utilization of photothermal properties and post-functionalization capabilities in modified membranes, effectively addresses challenges such as low flux, contamination susceptibility, and temperature polarization during membrane distillation. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is still a lack of comprehensive and in-depth discussions. Therefore, this paper systematically compiles the modification method of dopamine on the membrane surface and summarizes its application and mechanism in membrane distillation for the first time. It is believed that this paper would provide a reference for dopamine-assisted membrane separation during production, and further promote its practical application.

Advanced oxidation process/coagulation coupled with membrane distillation (AOP/Coag-MD) for efficient ammonia recovery: Elucidating biofouling control performance and mechanism

The inadequate understanding of the biofouling formation mechanism and the absence of effective control have inhibited the commercial application of membrane distillation (MD). In this study, an advanced oxidation process (AOP)/coagulation-coupled (Coag) membrane distillation system was proposed and exhibited the potential for MD ammonia recovery (recovery rate: 94.1%). Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) components such as humic acid and tryptophan-like proteins were disrupted and degraded in the digestate. The curtailment and sterilizing efficiency of AOP on biofilm growth was also verified by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in situ real-time monitoring and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was activated to generate sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radicals (HO•), which altered the microbial community. After oxidative treatment, 16 S rRNA sequencing indicated that the dominant phylum of the microbial community evolved into Firmicutes. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis demonstrated that free radicals produced by PMS could disrupt cells' signaling molecules and interactions. In conjunction with these analyses, the mechanisms of response to free radical attack by Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi were revealed. This research provided new insights into the field of membrane fouling control for membrane technology resource recovery processes, broadening the impact of AOP applications on microbiological response and fate in the environment.

Investigating mechanism of enhanced anti-fouling performance of MXene modified Janus MD membrane by XDLVO theory combined with surface elemental integration method

Organic membrane fouling is a major obstacle to the application of membrane distillation in low surface tension wastewater treatment. Membrane modification might be an effective way to mitigate membrane fouling. This study mainly explored the mechanism of enhanced anti-fouling performance of the MXene modified PVDF membrane by applying XDLVO theory combined with surface elemental integration (SEI) method. The rough membrane surfaces were first reconstructed using fractal function. Then, the interaction energy between low surface tension substances and the membranes before and after modification was calculated. The results showed that oil droplets and surfactant fouling were mainly caused by hydrophobic attraction due to Lewis acid-base (AB) interaction energy. By modifying the virgin PVDF membrane with MXene nanoparticles, the polar component of membrane surface tension (γAB) increased significantly, so that the interaction energy between all contaminants and membrane surface changed from attraction to repulsion. In addition, roughness weakened the interaction energy between contaminants and membrane surface but significantly lengthened the range of interaction distance, which together determined the ability of the membrane to attract or repel the contaminants. These findings may improve the understanding of the structure-effect relationship between membrane modification and anti-fouling ability, and provide new insights into the membrane modification for MD.

Novel bentonite modified PVDF membrane for desalination of synthetic-produced water by vacuum membrane distillation

ABSTRACT Membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as a highly promising method for the treatment of intricate and heavily contaminated water sources, such as those containing oily wastewater. The present study endeavors to advance the field by designing and evaluating a novel nanocomposite membrane comprised polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Bentonite (BNT) for application in vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) processes targeted at treating oily wastewater. A series of five nanocomposite flat sheet membranes were meticulously fabricated, incorporating varying quantities of bentonite (ranging from 0 to 0.8 g). Systematic characterizations were meticulously undertaken to comprehensively elucidate the influence of BNT incorporation on the structural and functional attributes of the developed membranes. These encompassed an array of analytical techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), contact angle measurements (CA), as well as assessments of membrane thickness, porosity, pore size, and pore size distribution. The findings distinctly showcased the successful integration of BNT within the PVDF matrix, which correspondingly led to discernable augmentations in membrane surface roughness, hydrophobicity, and porosity. Employing consistent operational conditions involving a feed temperature of 50°C, a vacuum pressure of 30 kPa, and a NaCl solution with a concentration of 14.75 g/L, VMD experiments were systematically conducted. The empirical outcomes revealed that the incorporation of BNT notably conferred substantial enhancements upon the nanocomposite membrane’s performance. The pinnacle achievement was evidenced in a flux rate of 34 L/m2.h and a remarkable NaCl rejection rate of 99.92%, a result achieved by the nanocomposite membrane incorporating the highest content of BNT additives.

Solar-driven surface-heating membrane distillation using Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated spacers

The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) MXenes as efficient light-to-heat conversion materials offers significant potential for solar-based desalination, particularly in photothermal interfacial evaporation, enabling cost-effective solar-powered membrane distillation (MD). This study investigates solar-powered MD afforded by a photothermally functionalized spacer, which is built by spray-coating Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets on metallic spacers. 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene gives an ultrahigh photothermal conversion efficiency; thereby, by Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated metallic spacer, this rationally designed spacer allows for a localized photothermal conversion and interfacial feed heating effect on the membrane surface, especially for MD operation. As a feed spacer and a photothermal element, Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated metallic spacer exhibited stable enhanced water flux of up to 0.36 kg·m−2h−1 under one sun illumination for a feed salinity of 35 g·L−1, corresponding energy conversion efficiency of 28.3 %. Overall, the developed photothermal Ti3C2Tx MXene-coated spacers displayed great potential in enhancing the performance, scalability, and feasibility of solar-driven MD process, paving the way for further development of photothermal elements that can be implemented in solar MD applications.

Pioneering the preparation of porous PIM-1 membranes for enhanced water vapor flow.

In this study, porous polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) membranes were prepared by non-solvent induced phase inversion (NIPS) and investigated for water vapor transport in view of their application in membrane distillation (MD). Due to the lack of high boiling point solvents for PIM-1 that are also water miscible, the mixture of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was found to be optimal for the formation of a membrane with a developed porous system both on the membrane surface and in the bulk. PIM-1 was synthesized by using low and high temperature methods to observe how molecular weight effects the membrane structure. Low molecular weight PIM-1 was produced at low temperatures, while high molecular weight PIM-1 was obtained at high temperatures. Several membranes were prepared, including PM-6, PM-9, and PM-11 from low molecular weight PIM-1, and PM-13 from high molecular weight PIM-1. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to image the surface and cross-section of different porous PIM-1 membranes. Among all the PIM-1 membranes (PM) obtained, PM-6, PM-9, PM-11 and PM-13 showed the most developed porous structure, while PM-13 showed large voids in the bulk of the membrane. Contact angle measurements showed that all PIM-1 porous membranes are highly hydrophobic. Liquid water flux measurements showed that PM-6, PM-9 and PM-11 showed minimal water fluxes due to small surface pore size, while PM-13 showed a high water flux due to a large surface pore size. Water vapor transport measurements showed high permeance values for all membranes, demonstrating the applicability of the developed membranes for MD. In addition, a thin film composite (TFC) membrane with PIM-1 selective layer was prepared and investigated for water vapor transport to compare with porous PIM-1 membranes. The TFC membrane showed an approximately 4-fold lower vapor permeance than porous membranes. Based on these results, we postulated that the use of porous PIM-1 membranes could be promising for MD due to their hydrophobic nature and the fact that the porous membranes allow vapor permeability through the membrane but not liquid water. The TFC membrane can be used in cases where the transfer of water-soluble contaminants must be absolutely avoided.

Fabrication and characterization of highly hydrophobic PVDF membrane by phase inversion method with high anti-wettability characteristics

Membrane gas-liquid separation technology has garnered significant attention in applications such as membrane desalination, distillation, and gas absorption due to its operational flexibility, compact design, and large specific interfacial area. However, the currently used membranes are prone to pore wetting under high operational pressures, transitioning from a non-wetted state to partially or fully wetted conditions. This undesired wetting increases mass transfer resistance for water vapor molecules, ultimately leading to reduced removal efficiency. To address this issue and enhance wetting resistance, membrane hydrophobicity needs to be improved. In this study, a highly hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was developed using the phase inversion method for membrane distillation applications. We mixed a 16wt% polymer concentration with N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent at 50°C for 24 hours. Subsequently, the polymer solution was cast and exposed to different non-solvents, namely water and methanol, to investigate their impact. Surface morphology and hydrophobic properties of the synthesized membranes were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and a Goniometer. Our findings indicate that the PVDF membrane fabricated with methanol as the non-solvent exhibited a significantly higher water contact angle of 126°, compared to 70° when deionized water was used as the non-solvent. This change from water to methanol as the non-solvent resulted in a more symmetrical membrane structure, enhancing the water contact angle from 70° to 126°. It is interesting to note that increase in the water contact angle increases the hydrophobicity of the PVDF membrane.

Superhydrophobic nanofiber membranes with 3D-network reinforced pore structure for membrane distillation

Electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) have garnered significant attention among researchers for membrane distillation (MD) in treating high-salinity wastewater due to their high water flux and low mass transfer resistance. However, a significant challenge in using ENMs for MD is membrane wetting, which results from the deformation of their weakly randomly overlaid nanofibers structure due to water flow shear forces. Herein, we focused on the membrane's structure and successfully prepared superhydrophobic nanofiber membranes with 3D-network reinforced pore structure by immersing PVDF ENMs in a mixed solution of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNPs) after a hot-pressing treatment for impregnation and coating. The resulting membrane exhibits exceptional properties, including a high water contact angle (WCA) of 160.3°, a high liquid entry pressure (LEP) of 1.57 bar, and sustained structural integrity with an unchanged pore size distribution even after 5 h of water scouring. These characteristics contribute to a water flux of 39.3 kg·m−2·h−1 and an unexpectedly long durability of up to 102 h, along with an outstanding salt rejection exceeding 99.99 %. Moreover, the membrane demonstrates stable water flux and resistance to wetting when processing a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution containing 0.1 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), underscoring its significant potential for MD applications.

Electrothermal interfacial evaporation through carbon-nanostructured composite membranes

High energy demand required in membrane distillation (MD) process to heat feed water and maintain the necessary temperature gradient across the membrane presents a challenge to widespread adoption of MD. In response to this challenge, surface heating membrane distillation (SHMD) has emerged as a promising solution. SHMD can employ solar or electrical energy to directly heat the membrane and feed, eliminating the need for an external heat source to heat feed water. In this study, we explore electrothermally-driven interfacial evaporation using a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based composite membrane and further envision its utilization for high-efficient SHMD. Upon application of voltage, the resistance of the MWCNT leads to the conversion of electrical energy into heat, which is then uniformly transferred to feeds. The MWCNT-based composite membrane exhibited an evaporative water flux of up to 2.34 kg m−2h−1 with an associated energy efficiency of 61% and demonstrated outstanding localized surface heating performance. The employed membranes exhibited no significant variations in either resistance or surface temperature, regardless of the direction of the applied electric field. Energy parameters from the electrothermal membranes showed quantitative agreement with values reported for various electrothermal MD systems, suggesting the potential of the composite membranes in energy-efficient and cost-effective localized heating MD applications.

Development of superhydrophobic ceramic membrane decorated with flake-like structure by two-step synthesis for seawater desalination by membrane distillation

BackgroundDeveloping durable superhydrophobic ceramic membranes capable of withstanding harsh operating conditions and maintaining their properties over an extended period poses a challenge due to the limited robustness and stability of superhydrophobic membranes. MethodsIn this study, a two-step technique, previously unreported, was successfully used to prepare superhydrophobic mullite-based kaolinite (MK) and stainless steel (SS) composite hollow fibre membranes (HFMs). The surface roughening step was attained through the hydrothermal treatment of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO) at different reaction times (2- 5 h) on the MK-SS HFM surface. The fluorinating process was achieved using 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (C8, 97%) through a dip-coating technique. A seawater desalination experiment by a membrane distillation (MD) system evaluated the performance of MK-SS HFM for 500 min. Significant findingsThe results revealed that the MK-SS/4 h HFM, characterized by its flake-like structure, exhibited optimal superhydrophobic behavior. It displayed contact angles (CAs) of 155.9° for water, 144° for water/ethanol, 129° for palm oil, and 112° for engine oil, with a liquid entry pressure (LEP) of 5.2 bar Furthermore, the membrane performance was tested in a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) at 70 °C using a solution that simulated real seawater conditions, including sodium chloride (NaCl) at 35 g/L, sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) at 1.2 g/L, sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) at 1 g/L, and humic acid at 8 mg/L. Remarkably, a rejection rate of about 99.91% and a permeate flux of 24.3 L/(m².h) were achieved. Despite the presence of organic contaminants and various salts, this superhydrophobic HFM, prepared using a two-step technique, exhibited higher contact angles, rejection rates, and permeate flux than other superhydrophobic HFMs reported in the literature due to its superior superhydrophobic and antiwetting properties. This robust superhydrophobic membrane holds promise for developing effective superhydrophobic HFMs that can be applied in various real MD applications.

A super liquid-repellent hierarchical porous membrane for enhanced membrane distillation

Membrane distillation (MD) is an emerging desalination technology that exploits phase change to separate water vapor from saline based on low-grade energy. As MD membranes come into contact with saline for days or weeks during desalination, membrane pores have to be sufficiently small (typically <0.2 µm) to avoid saline wetting into the membrane. However, in order to achieve high distillation flux, the pore size should be large enough to maximize transmembrane vapor transfer. These conflicting requirements of pore geometry pose a challenge to membrane design and currently hinder broader applications of MD. To address this fundamental challenge, we developed a super liquid-repellent membrane with hierarchical porous structures by coating a polysiloxane nanofilament network on a commercial micro-porous polyethersulfone membrane matrix. The fluorine-free nanofilament coating effectively prevents membrane wetting under high hydrostatic pressure (>11.5 bar) without compromising vapor transport. With large inner micro-porous structures, the nanofilament-coated membrane improves the distillation flux by up to 60% over the widely used commercially available membranes, while showing excellent salt rejection and operating stability. Our approach will allow the fabrication of high-performance composite membranes with multi-scale porous structures that have wide-ranging applications beyond desalination, such as in cleaning wastewater.

Fabrication and characterization of hydrophobic/hydrophilic dual-layer polyphenyl sulfone Janus membrane for application in direct contact membrane distillation

In this study, single-layer (SL) and dual-layer (DL) polyphenyl sulfone (PPSU) flat sheet nanocomposite Janus membranes were fabricated via a combination of VIPS and NIPS techniques for direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) for the first time. Hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (SiNP-B) were incorporated into the SL membranes and the top layer of the DL membranes, while hydrophilic silica nanoparticles (SiNP-L) were added into the down layer of the DL membranes. The effect of the SiNP-B concentration (1–5 wt%) and the top layer thickness (50 and 100 μm) on the morphology, mean pore size (MPS), thickness, porosity, surface roughness, water contact angle (WCA), liquid entry pressure, mechanical strength, and thermal conductivity were investigated. All of the membranes showed a finger-like structure surrounded by a sponge-like structure. The membranes were examined in the DCMD of a 35,000 ppm saline solution at different feed temperatures (50–70 °C) and flow rates (250–1000 mL/min). The DL membranes possessed higher fluxes than the SL membranes through increasing MPS and WCA. The DL membrane with a SiNP-B concentration of 2 wt% and a hydrophobic thickness of 50 μm (DL- 2,50) achieved the highest flux (42.68 ± 0.35 kg/m2h) and salt rejection (94.90 %) during 5 h. This membrane has an MPS of 0.22 ± 0.03 μm, a thickness of 201 ± 4 μm, and a porosity of 76 ± 2 %. It could be concluded the proper pore size distribution is the most important factor in achieving a successful DCMD operation.

A novel approach for sterilization and concentration of traditional functional drinks: Membrane‐based nonthermal processes

AbstractThe applicability of microfiltration (MF) and osmotic membrane distillation (OMD) for sterilization and concentration of traditional functional drink constituents, such as Curcuma xanthorrhiza, ginger, lime, Java tea, and sappan wood extracts, was evaluated in this study. MF showed excellent performance in microorganisms elimination, turbidity reduction, and maintaining antihyperglycemic activity performance. However, a reduction of total phenol and antioxidant activity were observed due to the retention by MF. Fouling in MF was challenging and resulted in rapid flux decline. The concentration of sterilized extracts by OMD operation resulted in a concentration factor of 1.15, 1.13, 1.10, 1.24, and 1.24 for ginger, lime, C. xanthorrhiza, Java tea, and sappan wood, respectively. The active compounds were well preserved, with a maximum of 20% reduction compared to sterilized extracts. Despite insignificant foulant deposition, the OMD flux in tests using C. xanthorrhiza, ginger, and lime as the feed decreased over time, indicating reduced driving force.Practical applicationsThe application of membrane technology for juices and liquid foods sterilization and concentration has been widely researched. In this research, we evaluated the performance of MF and OMD for the sterilization and concentration of traditional functional drinks. The results indicated that the functional drink can be sterilized by MF with excellent preservation of the active compounds, such as those responsible for the antihyperglycemic and antioxidant activities. The OMD could also concentrate the traditional functional drink, even though concentration polarization posed a challenge to flux stability. The degradation of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of the concentrated traditional functional drink was at a minimal value, indicating the promising application of MF and OMD. We believe this article provides new and exciting insights to push forward the sterilization and concentration process in industrial scale.

Application of capacitive deionizing membrane distillation (CDIMD) system for seawater desalination: Emphasizing on the impacts of operating parameters

Although membrane distillation (MD) is highly regarded as a promising technique for seawater desalination, membrane scaling induced by the accumulation of crystals is the crucial obstacle for real application of MD. Capacitive deionization (CDI), another novel desalination technology, is mainly applied in the desalination of hyposaline water, and its desalination efficiency is inferior to MD. Even so, the electro-absorption desalination mechanism of CDI is a novel enlightenment for alleviating MD scaling. Hence, we developed a new-type desalination technique by integrating CDI with traditional MD system to retard MD scaling, namely capacitive deionizing membrane distillation (CDIMD) technique. In the CDIMD system, the anions and cations were respectively separated by the activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF) electrodes and lab-made electrically conductive membranes (CNTs-PTFE), accordingly alleviating the combination of salt ions and the subsequent membrane scaling development. The influences of crucial operation parameters of CDIMD on the desalination efficiency were deeply researched. The results revealed that feed temperature of around 65 °C, feed flow velocity of 15.72 mm/s, operating mode of forward-CDIMD, input voltage of 1.2–1.6 v, CNTs thickness of 40–60 μm, and a short time-set of ion-adsorption/desorption phases (9/1 min and 17/3 min) might contribute to the CDIMD desalination.

Liquid-lubricated nanofibrous membrane for scaling mitigation in solar-driven membrane distillation

Recently, localized heating membrane distillation (MD) driven by solar energy has attracted much attention for desalination, but salt accumulation on membrane surface is still challenging and needs to be tackled properly. In this work, liquid-lubricated nanofibrous membrane was fabricated by dip-coating of liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) whilst maintaining the interconnected pore structure for scaling mitigation in solar-driven membrane distillation. Due to the nanoscale dynamic characteristics of liquid PDMS molecules, the coated membrane demonstrated excellent properties in minimizing salt scaling with prolonged lifespan by a factor of 2 or more. AFM measurement confirmed that decreased attachment strength of the liquid-lubricated surfaces plays a vital role in obstructing the adsorption of salt crystals on the surface. Furthermore, the interconnected structure of the nanofibrous mat endowed the membrane with a distillate flux of as high as ∼ 8.3 L·m−2·day−1 under natural light. These results evidenced that the as-prepared membrane can be taken as a potential candidate for durable MD applications by fully taking advantage of renewable solar energy.
