Context Improving the utilisation of alternative protein ingredients in livestock production will reduce feeding costs and improve industry sustainability. Feather meal (FM) is an abundant, alternative protein source with a high protein content but poor amino acid (AA) digestibility. Aim This study evaluated strategies for improving AA digestibility of FM. Methods Experiment 1 examined the effects of physical treatment with ultrasound, microwave and autoclaving on FM AA profile and digestibility. Experiment 2 evaluated the dietary addition of a protease (Ronozyme ProAct, 200 and 600 mg/kg; RPA) and a probiotic (BioPlus 400, 1500 mg/kg) on FM AA digestibility. Apparent ileal digestibility was determined by feeding each treatment to four replicate groups of six birds in Experiment 1 and five replicate groups of seven birds in Experiment 2, and then collecting the contents of the lower half of the ileum. Key results None of the physical treatments improved (P > 0.05) the AA profile or ileal AA digestibility of FM. Dietary supplementation with RPA at 200 mg/kg or BioPlus 400 at 1500 mg/kg did not significantly (P > 0.05) influence the apparent ileal AA digestibility of FM. However, the higher concentration of RPA (600 mg/kg) significantly (P < 0.05) increased the apparent ileal AA digestibility of FM. Conclusion The increased digestibility of FM by the protease and numerical increase (P < 0.1) by the probiotic (1500 mg/kg) presumably reflects keratinase activity of both feed supplements. Implications The results of this study indicated that there is scope for further improvement in the nutritive value of FM for broilers.

Determination of apparent and standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids in corn HP-DDG fed to growing pigs

The corn-based ethanol production industry provides co-products with potential value as animal feed. However, the nutritional value of these co-products should be adequately determined for their sustainable implementation in swine diets. Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the concentration of amino acids (AA), apparent ileal digestible amino acids (AID), standardized ileal digestible amino acids (SID), and crude protein (CP) in corn distillers dried grains with high protein content (corn HP-DDG) for pigs. Six growing pigs (initial body weight: 46.30 ± 2.14 kg) were surgically fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum and allotted to a duplicate 2 × 3 incomplete Latin Square Design. Diets containing corn HP-DDG as the only AA source and a nitrogen-free diet (NFD) were formulated. Corn HP-DDG was used as a test ingredient to replace 40% of the starch in NFD, and titanium dioxide (0.5%) was added as an indigestible marker to both diets. Pigs were fed between 08:00 and 18:00 h during five days of adaptation and a sequence of two days of ileal digesta collection. On an as-fed basis, the chemical composition of corn HP-DDG was 40.41% CP, 1.39% lysine, 1.57% methionine + cysteine, 1.61% threonine, 0.23% tryptophan, and 2.15% valine. The AID and SID values of corn HP-DDG were 74.04% and 80.87% for CP; 76.32% and 79.15% for lysine; 84.75% and 86.52% for methionine + cysteine; 71.97% and 78.30% for threonine; 83.86% and 92.44% for tryptophan; and 76.34% and 80.47% for valine, respectively. In conclusion, the SID CP and AA in corn HP-DDG were within the previously published values, and the determined SID coefficients should be used to formulate accurate diets for pigs.

Influence of graded levels of maize distillers dried grains with solubles (mDDGS) on the performance, digestive tract development and carcass characteristics of broilers

Abstract The present study investigated the feeding value of maize distillers dried grains with solubles (mDDGS) for broiler chickens. As the first step, the nutrient composition, apparent metabolisable energy (AME) and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility of mDDGS were determined. These values were used to formulate iso-nutrient and isocaloric diets to evaluate the influence of graded levels of mDDGS on broiler performance, digestive tract development and carcass characteristics. Five maize-soybean based diets containing 0 or 5, 10, 15 and 20% of mDDGS, were formulated and cold-pelleted at 65 °C. Each diet was offered ad libitum to six replicates (eight birds per replicate cage) during starter (day 1–21) and finisher (day 22–35) phases. The mDDGS was analysed to contain (% dry matter (DM) basis): CP, 27.8; total non-starch polysaccharides, 28.6 and soluble non-starch polysaccharides, 5.6. The AME was determined to be 10.23 MJ/kg DM. The average ileal digestibility coefficient of indispensable AA was 0.826. The Inclusion of 20% mDDGS resulted in poorer (P < 0.05) feed per gain (quadratic effect, P < 0.05) during the starter period, but no negative effects (P > 0.05) were observed finisher period and the overall production period (day 1–35). Feed intake and feed per gain (linear effect, P < 0.05) decreased with increasing inclusions of mDDGS during finisher period and overall period. A tendency (P = 0.06) for linear improvement in excreta quality was observed with increasing inclusion levels of mDDGS. Relative digestive tract weights and carcass and breast meat yields were not influenced (P > 0.05) by dietary treatments. A linear (P < 0.05) decrease was observed for the relative lengths of jejunum, ileum and the small intestine. The results indicated that, when balanced for metabolisable energy and digestible amino acids, mDDGS can be incorporated into broiler starter and finisher diets up to 15 and 20%, respectively, with no adverse effects on live performance, carcass characteristics or excreta quality.

Apparent ileal amino acid digestibility, gut morphometrics, and gene expression of peptide and amino acid transporters in broiler chickens fed low-crude-protein diets supplemented with crystalline amino acids with soybean meal, canola meal, or corn DDGS as protein feedstuffs.

We investigated the impact of using canola meal (CM) or corn distillers dried grain soluble (cDDGS) in place of soybean meal (SBM) in low-crude-protein diets supplemented with amino acids (AA) on AA digestibility, gut morphometrics, and AA transporter genes in broiler chicken. On day 0, 540 Cobb 500 male broilers were allocated to six diets in 36-floor pens. The positive control (PC) was a corn-SBM diet with adequate crude protein (CP). The CP level of negative control (NC) was decreased by 45 and 40 g kg-1 relative to PC for grower and finisher phases, respectively. The subsequent two diets had the same CP levels as NC but with cDDGS added at 50 or 125 g kg-1. The last two diets had the same CP as NC but with CM added at 50 or 100 g kg-1. Dietary CP reduction in corn-SBM diets increased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of Lys (88.5%), Met (90.7%), Thr (77.4%), Cys (80.7%), and Gly (84.7%). Increasing levels of cDDGS linearly decreased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of Asp, Cys, Glu, and Ser, whereas increasing CM level linearly decreased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of Cys, Pro, and Ser. The CP reduction in corn-SBM diets produced downward expression of peptide transporter1 and decreased (P < 0.05) absolute pancreas and ileum weight and length of jejunum and ileum. Partial replacement of SBM with alternative protein feedstuffs (cDDGS or CM) in low-CP diets had minimal effects on AA digestibility and mRNA levels of peptides and AA transporters. © 2024 The Authors. Apparent nutrient digestibility, metabolizable energy and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility of commercial partially defatted Hermetia illucens meal for laying hens

Abstract A digestibility study with laying hens was carried out to determine the nutritional value of a commercial and representative (batch to batch variance adjusted) insect meal based on Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae, (from black soldier fly) which was the objective in this study. A basal diet (BD; CP 15%), formulated and fed as such and an experimental diet (HD; CP 21%) consisting of BD with inclusion of 18% of the HI meal were used in the study. The BD and HD were fed to eight and six replicate metabolic cages, respectively, with eight Dekalb White laying hens each from 25 to 27 weeks of age. Diets (pelleted with TiO2 as marker) and water were available for ad libitum intake. Excreta was collected during the last three days to determine AMEn and apparent total tract faecal nutrient digestibility coefficients (ATTDC). Distal ileal content was collected at the last day of the experiment to determine apparent ileal amino acids digestibility of diets and HI meal. Using table values for endogenous losses standardised ileal amino acids digestibility coefficient (SIDC) of HI meal were also calculated. Analysed nutrients (g/kg) in HI meal were: 47 moisture, 529 crude protein, 71 ash, 135 fat and thus 218 was calculated as carbohydrates. Determined AME AMEn for HI meal was 3,846 kcal/kg dry matter (DM) and AMEn was 3,498 3,671 kcal/kg DM and ATTDC AFD for crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrates was 0.830, 0.940 and 0.680, respectively. Average SID coefficient for the 18 amino acids was 0.861 86.1%. Among indispensable amino acids SIDC ranged from 0.790% for threonine to 0.950% for phenylalanine and was 0.840% for lysine. These findings highlight that HI meal is an interesting alternative protein source for soybean meal (SBM). Besides market prices and availability, demands for more sustainable poultry production will determine the use of HI meals as alternative for SBM in poultry diets in the near future, especially in regions where SBM is imported from overseas.

306 Nutrient Digestibility and Dietary Energy Values in Growing Pigs Fed a Corn Distillers Dried Grains with Soluble (Cddgs)-Based Diet with Multi-Enzyme Supplementation

Abstract Dietary enzyme supplementation may enhance the digestibility and utilization of non-starch components of the diet by pigs. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a multi-carbohydrase enzyme (ENZ) in growing pigs for apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of amino acids (AA), apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients and energy values in a corn distillers dried grains with solubles (cDDGS)-based diet. A total of 12 ileal-cannulated pigs [initial body weight (BW) = 31.7 kg ± 3.04] were housed in individual metabolic crates for 21 days (Period 1) and subsequently transferred to individual floor pens for additional 28 days (Period 2). These animals were assigned to 2 diets (n = 6) in a completely randomized design (CRD). The diets were formulated on corn, soybean meal and cDDGS (30%) without (CON) or with ENZ supplementation. The ENZ (Proprietary xylanase/cellulase product, Kerry Inc.) was included in the diets at 200 g/tonne. Feeds were formulated to 1.15% SID lysine and met or exceeded nutrient requirements for growing pigs (NRC, 2012). Pigs were fed diets at three times maintenance energy requirement based on BW, which was assessed at every 2 weeks intervals throughout the study, Titanium dioxide was added to the diets as an indigestible marker. In period 1, pigs had 14 d of adaptation, followed by 4 d fecal and urine using the total collection method and 2 d ileal digesta collection. In period 2, pigs had 23 days adaptation, followed by 2 d fecal collection and 2 d illeal digesta collection. The AID of AA and gross energy (GE) and ATTD of nutrients and GE were calculated by an index method. Data were analyzed as a CRD, using pig as the experimental unit and enzyme supplementation as the main effect. Overall, average daily gain and gain:feed ratio of pigs were 857 and 918 g/d and 0.52 and 0.54 for CON and ENZ, respectively (P &amp;gt; 0.05). In period 1, ENZ supplementation improved (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the ATTD of dry matter (DM), ash, organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and GE by 4.4%, 26.8%, 2.8%, 11.3%, and 3.6%, respectively. Also, ENZ tended to improve (P &amp;lt; 0.10) the ATTD of crude protein (CP) by 7.4% and AID of threonine, CP, and GE by 6.6%, 7.6%, and 13.7%, respectively. In period 2, ENZ improved (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the ATTD of DM, ash, OM, CP, NDF, and GE by 5%, 30.1%, 3.4%, 4.1%, 19.6%, and 4.2%, respectively. similarly, EMZ improved (P &amp;lt; 0.05) the AID of threonine, CP, and GE by 4.2%, 6.0%, and 6.4%, respectively. In conclusion, multi-carbohydrase supplementation in a corn-SBM diet with 30% cDDGS increased the digestibility of nutrients and energy in growing pigs and may represent a useful strategy to optimize the utilization of such raw material.

Apparent Metabolizable Energy and Amino Acid Digestibility of Corn of Different Origin Fed to Male Broilers from 12 to 18 Days of Age.

Apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD) of corn samples from the United States (USA), Argentina (ARG), and Brazil (BRA) fed to 432 and 324 YPM × Ross 708 male broilers from 12 to 18 d of age were evaluated using the total collection method (experiment 1) and index method (experiment 2), respectively. In experiment 1, broilers were fed either a basal diet with 30% dextrose inclusion, or a test diet obtained by the replacement of dextrose with corn from each origin. In experiment 2, broilers were fed one of three test diets in which corn from each origin was the only source of AA. All dietary treatments had 12 replicate cages. Similar (p > 0.05) AME (dry-matter basis) values were observed between corn samples. The highest gap in AME (43 kcal/kg) was found between corn from BRA (3694 kcal/kg) and corn from the USA (3651 kcal/kg). Likewise, similar (p > 0.05) AIAAD values were observed for all AA apart from tryptophan (Trp), as corn from BRA (77.45%) had a higher (p = 0.024) Trp digestibility than corn from the USA (72.53%). Overall, a similar nutrient utilization by the birds was observed for the corn samples, regardless of origin.

Standardized ileal amino acid digestibility of high-oleic full-fat soybean meal in broilers

High-oleic (HO) soybean may serve as a value-added feed ingredient to enrich poultry meat due to its fatty acid content. However, the amino acid (AA) nutrient digestibility of soybean meal (SBM) made from these soybeans has yet to be determined. The objective of this study was to determine apparent ileal AA digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal AA digestibility (SID) of high-oleic full-fat (HO-FF) SBM compared to normal oleic full-fat (NO-FF), normal oleic extruded expeller (NO-EE), and solvent-extracted SBM (SE-SBM) in broilers. A nitrogen-free basal diet (NFD) was fed to 1 treatment group with 10 chicks/cage to determine basal endogenous losses (BEL). Titanium dioxide was used as an inert marker. The test diets contained 57.5% of the basal NFD and 42.5% of 1 of the 4 soybean sources. A total of 272 Ross-708 male broilers were placed in 40 battery cages with 5 treatments and 8 replicates per treatment. A common starter diet was provided to all the chickens for 14 d. Experimental diets were provided as a mash for 9 d before sample collection. Chickens were euthanized with CO2 on d 23, and contents of the distal ileum were collected, frozen, and freeze-dried. The BEL were similar to the values found in the literature. At d 23, broilers fed the SE-SBM had the highest body weight gain and best FCR compared to chickens fed the HO-FF and NO-FF treatments (P < 0.001). Broilers fed the SE-SBM and NO-EE experimental diets had (P < 0.001) higher apparent ileal AA digestibility and AA SID than broilers fed the HO-FF and NO-FF treatments. In conclusion, the SID of AA from HO-FF is similar to the digestibilities of other full-fat soybeans found in the literature and is lower than that of NO-EE and SE-SBM.

Comparison of methods for estimating basal endogenous losses of amino acids and additivity of digestibility of amino acids in corn and soybean meal for broilers

This study was to compare the estimates of basal endogenous losses (BEL) of amino acids (AA) determined by 3 methods including feeding a nitrogen-free diet (NFD) or a low-casein diet (LCD, containing casein at 30 g/kg diet) or using the regression method. Another objective was to investigate whether the ileal AA digestibility of corn calculated from a casein-supplemented corn diet is additive for a corn-soybean meal (SBM) mixed diet in broilers. On d 31 of age, 168 Ross 308 male broilers were assigned to 8 dietary treatments with 6 replicates in a randomized complete block design. An NFD and 3 diets containing 30, 60, or 90 g/kg of casein were formulated to determine the BEL of AA and ileal AA digestibility of casein. The other 4 diets consisted of a corn diet, SBM diet, casein-supplemented corn diet, and corn-SBM mixed diet. On d 35 of age, digesta from the distal section of the ileum were collected. The BEL of AA in birds fed the LCD were greater (P < 0.05) than those of the NFD and the regression method. There were no differences in the BEL of AA determined between the NFD and the regression method. Apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA for corn calculated from the casein-supplemented corn diet were greater (P < 0.05) than those of the corn diet. The predicted AID of Thr in the corn-SBM mixed diet based on the AID of AA for corn in the corn diet was lower (P < 0.05) than the measured AID. However, the predicted AID of AA in the mixed diet based on the AID of AA for corn in the casein-supplemented corn diet did not differ from the measured AID. The predicted SID of AA in the mixed diet did not differ from the measured SID irrespective of casein supplementation. In conclusion, feeding an NFD or using the regression method yields similar BEL of AA, but not feeding an LCD. Casein supplementation in the corn diet increases the ileal AA digestibility for corn, which is additive for the corn-SBM mixed diet.

Dietary crude protein reductions in wheat-based diets with two energy densities compromised performance of broiler chickens from 15 to 36 days post-hatch

This study was designed to investigate the impacts of 2 energy densities (13.0 and 12.5 MJ/kg ME) in wheat-based diets with 3 tiers of CP concentrations (210, 190, and 170 g/kg) on the performance of broiler chickens. The parameters assessed included growth performance (15-36 d posthatch), carcass traits, nutrient utilization, starch-protein digestive dynamics, apparent ileal amino acid digestibility coefficients, and the free amino acid and ammonia (NH3) concentrations in systemic plasma. Also, the feasibility of substituting soybean meal with canola meal in 190 g/kg CP diets was investigated. The dietary CP reduction from 210 to 170 g/kg significantly compromised weight gain by 12.4% (1,890 vs. 2158 g/bird) and FCR by 5.33% (1.501 vs. 1.425). The 0.5 MJ energy density reduction compromised FCR by 3.25% (1.525 vs. 1.477; P=0.013) in birds offered 170 g/kg CP diets. Reducing dietary CP and energy densities interactively influenced (P=0.027) apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and nitrogen corrected metabolizable energy (AMEn) (P=0.022) such that reducing dietary CP increased these parameters but reducing dietary energy densities decreased AME and AMEn. The 150 g/kg canola meal inclusion with the elimination of soybean meal displayed some promise. Dietary CP reductions (and increased nonbound amino acid inclusions) linearly associated with increased plasma ammonia (NH3) concentrations (r=-0.607; P=0.010) and plasma NH3 was linearly related to depressed weight gains (r=-0.565; P=0.018). The association of dietary non-protein-bound amino acid (NPBAA) inclusions and elevated plasma NH3 concentrations have profound implications for the successful development of reduced-CP, wheat-based broiler diets.

Hygienic pelleting can decrease Hubbard × Ross 708 apparent ileal amino acid digestibility, broiler performance, and increase digestible amino acid requirement

To reduce pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella in feed and ensure a high-quality pellet, diets for broilers, turkeys, and breeders may be pelleted using high conditioning temperatures and extended times. However, increased conditioning temperature and time may alter amino acid conformation regarding secondary and tertiary structure, decrease digestibility and subsequent bird performance, and necessitate increased amino acid formulation density. The objective of this study was to evaluate increased conditioning temperature and exposure time within the pelleting process using a hygienizer (hygienic pelleting) in diets that vary in digestible lysine and corresponding amino acid ratio on Hubbard × Ross 708 starter broiler performance, apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD), and requirement. A 5 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with 5 levels of digestible lysine (−20, −10%, 2019 Ross Broiler Starter Nutrition recommendation, +10, and +20%) and 2 techniques of pelleting (standard and hygienic) was utilized in a randomized complete block design. Standard pelleting utilized 77°C conditioning for 30 s and hygienic pelleting utilized 88°C conditioning for 60 s and 6-min retention time in a hygienizer. Each treatment was fed to 12 replicate pens of 10 male broiler Hubbard × Ross 708 chicks for a 21-day period. Standard pelleting and hygienic pelleting demonstrated a 1.19 and 1.37% digestible Lys requirement, respectively, using the 2 straight line, 1-breakpoint broken-line regression model. Performance data, AIAAD, and the broken-line regression model suggest an approximate 10% increase in digestible Lys and corresponding amino acid ratio relative to 2019 Ross Broiler Starter Nutrition Specifications for Hygienic Pelleting. Nutritionists should be cognizant that nutritional detriment may accompany procedures used to create hygienic pelleted feed.

Supplementation of a Multi-Carbohydrase and Phytase Complex in Diets Regardless of Nutritional Levels, Improved Nutrients Digestibility, Growth Performance, and Bone Mineralization of Growing-Finishing Pigs.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary multi-enzyme (multi-carbohydrase and phytase complex, MCPC) supplementation on digestibility, growth performance, bone mineralization, and carcass yield and traits in growing-finishing pigs fed diets with adequate or deficient net energy (NE), amino acids (AA), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels. A total of 576 crossbred [Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire)] barrows (~25 kg) were fed one of the six diets till live weight approached 130 kg. Basal diets included a positive control (PC), negative control 1 (NC1) and 2 (NC2), while another three diets were prepared by adding MCPC to the three basal diets. The final body weight was lower (p < 0.05) in NC2 than in NC1 and PC treatments, while overall feed intake and feed-gain ratio were higher (p < 0.05) in NC1 and NC2 than in PC treatment. The NC2 treatment showed lower (p < 0.05) carcass weight but higher (p < 0.05) lean meat percentage than the PC treatment. The apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP) and AA was decreased (p < 0.05) or tended (p < 0.10) to decrease in NC1 and/or NC2 diets compared with a PC diet. MCPC supplementation improved (p < 0.05) AID of Ca, P and AA (Lys, Leu, Val, Phe, Gly, Tyr and Pro), apparent total-tract digestibility (ATTD) of GE, CP, bone strength, Ca, and P retention. In conclusion, MCPC supplementation improved nutrient digestibility, bone mineralization, and growth performance of fattening pigs, regardless of the nutritional level of the basal diet.

Influence of dietary crude protein on growth performance and apparent and standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids in corn-soybean meal-based diets fed to broilers

This study aimed to examine the influence of dietary CP on the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and test the additivity of AA digestibility in corn-soybean meal-based diets fed to broilers. Six experimental diets comprising a nitrogen-free diet and five corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 6.0%, 9.5%, 13.0%, 16.5%, and 20.0% CP were prepared. Increments in CP and AA concentrations were achieved by increasing the inclusion rate of corn and soybean meal at the expense of cornstarch. All diets contained 0.5% chromic oxide, which was included as an indigestible index. A total of 960 Ross 308 male broilers 19-day-old male broilers (Ross 308), with a mean BW of 628 g (SD=58.0), were allocated to six dietary treatment groups in a randomized complete block design, with each treatment group have eight replicate cages and 20 birds per cage. All birds were fed the experimental diets for 4 days. On d 23, individual BW and feed intake were recorded, followed by collection of ileal digesta samples from the distal ileum. Regarding growth, the final BW, weight gain, feed intake, and gain to feed ratio increased linearly (P < 0.001) as dietary CP concentrations increased. With the increase in dietary CP concentrations from 6.0% to 20.0%, the AID of all AA, except Arg, increased linearly (P < 0.05). However, the SID of all AA, except Arg, Cys, and Pro, remained unaffected by CP concentrations in the diets. This study indicated that dietary CP concentrations from 6.0% to 20.0% have an effect on the growth performance of birds and the AID of most AA; however, the SID of most AA was not affected by dietary CP concentrations in the corn-soybean meal-based diets. In conclusion, the SID of AA is more additive than the AID of AA in poultry diets containing CP in the range of 6.0% to 20.0%.

Effects of feeding levels on ileal amino acid digestibility of extruded full fat soybeans in nongestating sows.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of feeding levels on amino acid (AA) digestibility of extruded full fat soybeans (EFSB) fed to nongestating sows and to provide a reference for setting feed intake level when evaluating the quality of nutrients in the feed ingested by sows. Twelve nongestating sows (parity 3 to 5) were fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum. After recovery, sows were assigned to a replicated 6 × 3 incomplete Latin square design using two diets (nitrogen-free and EFSB) and three levels of feed intake (1.3, 2.0, and 3.4 times the maintenance requirement for metabolizable energy (ME)). The design included six dietary treatments and three periods, and each period contained two replicates for a total of six replicate sows per treatment. All diets contained 0.3% chromic oxide as an indigestible marker. In each period, ileal digesta samples were collected continuously for 12 h on days 6 and 7 after 5 d of acclimation to the experimental diet. Results of the experiment indicated that different feeding levels (1.3, 2.0, and 3.4 times the maintenance requirement for ME) had no effects on apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of AA and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA, but feeding level did affect the endogenous AA loss estimated using the nitrogen-free diet method. Endogenous phenylalanine excretion was greater with 1.3 times than with 3.4 times the maintenance requirement for ME (P = 0.03), and endogenous tyrosine excretion was greater with 1.3 and 2.0 times than with 3.4 times the maintenance requirement for ME (P = 0.01). Increasing feed consumption resulted in greater loss of total endogenous AAs and crude protein (CP). In conclusion, feeding levels of 1.3 to 3.4 times the maintenance requirement for ME did not affect the AID and SID of AA of EFSB fed to nongestating sows.

Dietary Inclusion of Pancreatin Enzyme on the Ileal and Fecal Digestibility of Nutrients in Layer-Type Cockerels

The current experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of Pancreatin supplementation at different levels on ileal and fecal digestibility in layer-type cockerels. A total of 480-day-old silver brown Hy-Line male chicks were randomly allocated into 5 treatments, 6 replicates (16 birds per pen) arranged in a completely randomized design. Pancreatin enzyme was supplemented on a basal corn-soybean meal-based diet at 0, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 mg/kg and was fed in two growth phases (starter and grower). The results indicated that at the end of the starter stage, except for 1000 mg/kg, dietary Pancreatin supplementation levels increased (p<0.05) the ileal crude protein (CP). Similarly, addition of Pancreatin increased (p< 0.05) apparent ileal amino acids (AA) digestibility (AIAAD) total means of AA (MTAA), means of indispensable AA (MIAA) and dispensable AA (MDAA) with the optimum performance on 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg. However, except for histidine and alanine which were negatively affected (p<0.05), and MIAA, MDAA, MTAA which were also positively affected, the addition level at 1000 mg/kg did not affect most of the AIAAD compared to the non-supplemented. Further, Pancreatin supplementation had no effect (p>0.05) on nitrogen digestibility (ND), nitrogen retention (NR), digestible energy (DE), apparent metabolizable energy (AME), dry matter digestibility (DMD), dry matter retention (DMR), and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (AME-n) on fed starter diet. On the other hand, at the end of the grower stage, dietary Pancreatin enzyme supplementation reduced (p<0.05) the ileal CP, MIAA, MDAA, MTAA, AIAAD, AME, AME-n, ND, NR, DE, DMD, and DMR in a dose-dependent manner. The rate of reduction was more marked on Pancreatin addition level 1000 mg/kg. In conclusion, Pancreatin supplementation at 250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg, and 750 mg/kg improved AIAAD and ileal CP, especially at the young age. The rate of pancreatin enzyme effect was dependent on enzyme supplement level to the ileal CP and individual amino acid.

Apparent digestibility of energy and nutrients and efficiency of microbial phytase is influenced by body weight of pigs.

An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that regardless of pig body weight (BW), increasing dietary phytase results in increased phytate degradation and improved digestibility of minerals, amino acids (AA), and gross energy (GE). Eighteen pigs were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum and allotted to a triplicated 6 × 3 Youden square design with six diets and three collection periods of 7 d, for a total of nine replicate pigs per diet. This design was repeated four times to simulate four production phases, and there was a 7-d resting period before each collection phase started (BW at start of collections: 29.3, 53.6, 85.1, and 114.4 kg for phases 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively). Six corn-soybean meal diets were formulated by including 0, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000, or 4,000 phytase units/kg feed (FTU). The six diets were used throughout the experiment. Samples of feces and ileal digesta were collected in each period. Results indicated that regardless of pig BW, increasing inclusion of phytase increased (quadratic; P < 0.05) apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of crude protein (CP) and most AA, increased apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of Ca, P, K, Mg (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05), and Na (linear; P < 0.05), but decreased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) AID and ATTD of GE. In all phases, ileal concentrations of inositol phosphate (IP) 6, IP5, IP4, and IP3 decreased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05), whereas ileal inositol increased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) with increasing dietary phytase. However, as pig BW increased, AID of GE, CP, and AA increased (linear, P < 0.05), and the AID of a few AA (Met, Phe, Thr, Trp, Ala, Asp, Gly, and Ser) also increased quadratically (P < 0.05). The ATTD of GE, K, and Mg increased (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05), but ATTD of Ca and Na (linear; P < 0.05) and of P (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) decreased as pig BW increased. Ileal IP6 and IP3 (linear and quadratic; P < 0.05) and ileal IP5 and IP4 (linear; P < 0.05) increased, whereas ileal inositol decreased (linear; P < 0.05) as pig BW increased. In conclusion, regardless of pig BW, increasing dietary phytase increased phytate degradation and inositol release in the small intestine, and consequently increased mineral and AA digestibility. Older pigs have reduced Ca, P, and Na digestibility, but increased K, Mg, AA, and GE digestibility compared with younger pigs. The efficiency of dietary phytase to degrade phytate appears to decrease as pigs get older.

Effect of protease supplementation on apparent ileal crude protein and amino acid digestibility of over-processed soybean meals in broilers

BackgroundNutritional value of proteins in feed ingredients can be negatively affected by hydrothermal processing, which causes large variation in the bioavailability of amino acids (AA) and negatively affects animal productive performance. Supplementation of exogenous proteases could increase the rate of digestion of damaged proteins, thereby increasing overall AA digestibility and bioavailability. The aim was to determine the effect of exogenous protease supplementation on the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of crude protein (CP) and AA of soybean meals (SBM) with different degrees of hydrothermal processing in broilers.MethodsThe experiment involved a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement, with SBM processing time (commercial SBM or autoclaved for 30 or 60 min at 120 °C) and protease supplementation (not supplemented and supplemented) as factors. Protease was included at three times the recommended dose (0.06%) and the experimental diets were fed from 15 to 21 d.ResultsThe interaction between the effects of SBM processing and protease supplementation was significant for the AID of CP (P = 0.01), Trp (P = 0.01), Gly (P = 0.03) and Pro (P = 0.03), and also for the average daily gain (P = 0.01) and feed conversion ratio (P = 0.04). Increasing the processing time of SBM decreased (P < 0.0001) the AID of all amino acids, whilst the effect of protease supplementation was only significant for the AID of Phe (P = 0.02) and Tyr (P = 0.01).ConclusionsExogenous protease supplementation at three times the commercial dose does not seem to offset the negative effects of hydrothermal processing of SBM on the apparent ileal digestibility of CP and amino acids or performance of broilers. Whilst positive numerical improvements of digestibility and performance (ADG and FCR) were noticed with protease supplementation at relatively mild processing levels, negative results were obtained with the harsh-processed meals.

Influence of age and type of feed ingredients on apparent and standardized ileal amino acid digestibility in broiler chickens.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of bird age on apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) for 10-d-old Experiment (Exp. 1) and 22-d-old (Exp. 2) male broilers. This study investigated the effects of different broiler ages and feed ingredients on AID and SID of AA in corn and soybean meal (SBM). Four hundred and eighty (age = 7 d; initial body weight [BW] = 173.4 ± 12.65 g) and 192 (age = 18 d; initial BW = 772.2 ± 62.13 g) birds were allocated to three dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design with eight replicate cages per treatment. Two diets were formulated based on corn or SBM as the sole source of AA in the diet. A nitrogen-free diet was also formulated to measure basal endogenous losses of AA. Experimental diets were given for 3 and 4 days in Exps. 1 and 2, respectively. An interaction was observed (p < 0.05) between the age of birds and the type of ingredient for the AID of most AA, except for methionine, valine, cysteine (Cys), and tyrosine; however, the effects of age and type of ingredients were diminished in the SID of AA, except for histidine, isoleucine, leucine (Leu), phenylalanine, alanine (Ala), and glutamic acid (Glu). The AID of AA, except for Leu and Cys and the SID of AA, except for Leu, Ala, Glu, and Pro in SBM were greater (p < 0.05) than in corn. As the age of birds increased from 10 to 22 d, digestibility of all AA increased (p < 0.05), regardless of the expression of AA digestibility (i.e., AID and SID). In conclusion, the AID and SID of AA in both corn and SBM increased with increasing age, and the AID and SID of AA in SBM were greater than in corn.

The effect of a dacitic (rhyolitic) tuff breccia (Azomite®) in corn, soybean, and DDGS based diets that vary in inorganic phosphate source on pellet mill energy use, 0 to 21-day broiler performance, and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility

Past research has shown that Azomite ( AZM ) can increase pellet mill production rate in diets that include inorganic phosphate sources ( IPS ) of dicalcium phosphate ( DCP ) or tricalcium phosphate ( TCP ). The authors hypothesized that if production rate were held constant then pellet mill energy consumption would decrease for diets that contained AZM. The objective was to determine the effect of AZM (0.25%) in diets with DCP and TCP on pellet mill energy consumption, subsequent live bird performance, and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility ( AIAAD ) when fed to broiler chicks for 21 d. Feed was manufactured in a 2 (IPS) × 2 (AZM inclusion) factorial across 4 days in a Latin Square Design. Post manufacture, 320 one-day-old Ross 708 males were allocated to 8 replicate pens, 10 chicks per pen, in a randomized complete block design. Dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 (DCP or TCP) × 2 (AZM or no AZM) factorial. On d 21 ileal contents were collected for amino acid and titanium dioxide analysis. Pellet mill motor load decreased by 5% in diets containing TCP compared to DCP ( P < 0.001), and 1% when AZM was included ( P < 0.001). Pellet durability was increased in diets containing DCP when AZM was included, while TCP diets were unaffected ( P < 0.001). Hot pellet temperature increased for TCP diets with AZM, whereas DCP diets did not change ( P < 0.05). AIAAD of cysteine increased for DCP diets with AZM, but not TCP diets ( P < 0.05). Similar trends were observed for lysine, isoleucine, and valine ( P < 0.10). An increase in FCR by 0.02 was observed in DCP diets with AZM (1.283 vs. 1.309, P < 0.05), while TCP diets were unaffected (1.294 vs. 1.287, P > 0.05). Decreased pellet mill motor load that resulted from AZM inclusion suggests that feed was subjected to less frictional heat and/or pressure within the pellet die. This reduction in frictional heat and pressure likely preserved amino acid conformation, but the improvement was not translated to growth efficiency.
