The APO-K2 Catalog. II. Accurate Stellar Ages for Red Giant Branch Stars across the Milky Way

We present stellar age determinations for 4661 red giant branch stars in the APO-K2 catalog, derived using mass estimates from K2 asteroseismology from the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program and elemental abundances from the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. Our sample includes 17 of the 19 fields observed by K2, making it one of the most comprehensive catalogs of accurate stellar ages across the Galaxy in terms of the wide range of populations spanned by its stars, enabling rigorous tests of Galactic chemical evolution models. Taking into account the selection functions of the K2 sample, the data appear to support the age−chemistry morphology of stellar populations predicted by both inside-out and late-burst scenarios. We also investigate trends in age versus stellar chemistry and Galactic position, which are consistent with previous findings. Comparisons against APOKASC-3 asteroseismic ages show agreement to within ∼3%. We also discuss offsets between our ages and spectroscopic ages. Finally, we note that ignoring the effects of α-enhancement on stellar opacity (either directly or with the Salaris metallicity correction) results in an ∼10% offset in age estimates for the most α-enhanced stars, which is an important consideration for continued tests of Galactic models with this and other asteroseismic age samples.

APOGEE-centric Ananke Simulations in a SciServer SQL Database

Modern galaxy simulations have reached the complexity required to create sophisticated mock catalogs. Ananke is a set of nine mock catalogs constructed from synthetic surveys of three Milky Way-like galaxies from the Latte suite of FIRE simulations. Ananke provides observed quantities for comparison with modern large-scale stellar surveys. In SDSS-IV DR17, mock catalogs for the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) were built from Ananke synthetic surveys as a Value-Added Catalog, but were only provided as large flat files (∼>10's GB). Here we announce an >40 Tb SQL database for nine APOGEE-specific mock catalogs and describe additions to the data model necessary for effective user queries. The catalogs can be accessed on the free, science platform, SciServer—supported by the Institute for Data Intensive Engineering and Science at the Johns Hopkins University (IDIES); SciServer supports server-side analysis with commonly used coding languages and tools.

An Intermediate-age Alpha-rich Galactic Population in K2

Abstract We explore the relationships between the chemistry, ages, and locations of stars in the Galaxy using asteroseismic data from the K2 mission and spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. Previous studies have used giant stars in the Kepler field to map the relationship between the chemical composition and the ages of stars at the solar circle. Consistent with prior work, we find that stars with high [α/Fe] have distinct, older ages in comparison to stars with low [α/Fe]. We provide age estimates for red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Kepler field, which support and build upon previous age estimates by taking into account the effect of α-enrichment on opacity. Including this effect for [α/Fe]-rich stars results in up to 10% older ages for low-mass stars relative to corrected solar mixture calculations. This is a significant effect that Galactic archeology studies should take into account. Looking beyond the Kepler field, we estimate ages for 735 RGB stars from the K2 mission, mapping age trends as a function of the line of sight. We find that the age distributions for low- and high-[α/Fe] stars converge with increasing distance from the Galactic plane, in agreement with suggestions from earlier work. We find that K2 stars with high [α/Fe] appear to be younger than their counterparts in the Kepler field, overlapping more significantly with a similarly aged low-[α/Fe] population. This observation may suggest that star formation or radial migration proceeds unevenly in the Galaxy.

Machine learning in APOGEE

Context. The vast volume of data generated by modern astronomical surveys offers test beds for the application of machine-learning. In these exploratory applications, it is important to evaluate potential existing tools and determine those that are optimal for extracting scientific knowledge from the available observations. Aims. We explore the possibility of using unsupervised clustering algorithms to separate stellar populations with distinct chemical patterns. Methods. Star clusters are likely the most chemically homogeneous populations in the Galaxy, and therefore any practical approach to identifying distinct stellar populations should at least be able to separate clusters from each other. We have applied eight clustering algorithms combined with four dimensionality reduction strategies to automatically distinguish stellar clusters using chemical abundances of 13 elements. Our test-bed sample includes 18 stellar clusters with a total of 453 stars. Results. We have applied statistical tests showing that some pairs of clusters (e.g., NGC 2458–NGC 2420) are indistinguishable from each other when chemical abundances from the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) are used. However, for most clusters we are able to automatically assign membership with metric scores similar to previous works. The confusion level of the automatically selected clusters is consistent with statistical tests that demonstrate the impossibility of perfectly distinguishing all the clusters from each other. These statistical tests and confusion levels establish a limit for the prospect of blindly identifying stars born in the same cluster based solely on chemical abundances. Conclusion. We find that some of the algorithms we explored are capable of blindly identify stellar populations with similar ages and chemical distributions in the APOGEE data. Even though we are not able to fully separate the clusters from each other, the main confusion arises from clusters with similar ages. Because some stellar clusters are chemically indistinguishable, our study supports the notion of extending weak chemical tagging that involves families of clusters instead of individual clusters.

Radial Velocities in the Outermost Disk toward the Anticenter

Abstract We measure the mean Galactocentric radial component of the velocity of stars (v R ) in the disk at 8 kpc < R < 28 kpc in the direction of the anticenter. For this, we use the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment. Furthermore, we compare the result with H i maps along the same line of sight. We find an increase in positive (expansion) v R at R ≈ 9–13 kpc, reaching a maximum of ≈6 km s−1, and a decrease at large values of R, reaching a negative (contraction) value of ≈−10 km s−1 for R > 17 kpc. Negative velocities are also observed in 21 cm H i maps, possibly dominated by local gas emission. Among the possible dynamical causes for these non-zero v R , factors such as the effect of the Galactic bar, streams, or mergers do not seem appropriate to explain our observations. An explanation might be the gravitational attraction of overdensities in a spiral arm. As a matter of fact, we see a change of regime from positive to negative velocities around R ≈ 15 kpc, in the position where we cross the Outer spiral arm in the anticenter. The mass in spiral arms necessary to produce these velocities would be about 3% of the mass of the disk, consistent with our knowledge of the spiral arms. Another scenario that we explore is a simple class of out-of-equilibrium systems in which radial motions are generally created by the monolithic collapse of isolated self-gravitating overdensities.

Stellar and Planetary Characterization of the Ross 128 Exoplanetary System from APOGEE Spectra

Abstract The first detailed chemical abundance analysis of the M-dwarf (M4.0) exoplanet-hosting star Ross 128 is presented here, based upon near-infrared (1.5–1.7 μm), high-resolution (R ∼ 22,500) spectra from the SDSS Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. We determined precise atmospheric parameters T eff = 3231 ± 100 K, log g = 4.96 ± 0.11 dex and chemical abundances of eight elements (C, O, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ti, and Fe), finding Ross 128 to have near solar metallicity ([Fe/H] = +0.03 ± 0.09 dex). The derived results were obtained via spectral synthesis (1D LTE) adopting both MARCS and PHOENIX model atmospheres; stellar parameters and chemical abundances derived from the different adopted models do not show significant offsets. Mass–radius modeling of Ross 128b indicates that it lies below the pure-rock composition curve, suggesting that it contains a mixture of rock and iron, with the relative amounts of each set by the ratio of Fe/Mg. If Ross 128b formed with a subsolar Si abundance, and assuming the planet’s composition matches that of the host star, it likely has a larger core size relative to the Earth despite this producing a planet with a Si/Mg abundance ratio ∼34% greater than the Sun. The derived planetary parameters—insolation flux (S Earth = 1.79 ± 0.26) and equilibrium temperature (T eq = 294 ± 10 K)—support previous findings that Ross 128b is a temperate exoplanet in the inner edge of the habitable zone.

The Rotation of M Dwarfs Observed by the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment

Abstract We present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of rotational velocities in 714 M-dwarf stars observed by the SDSS-III Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. We use a template-fitting technique to estimate while simultaneously estimating , , and . We conservatively estimate that our detection limit is 8 km s−1. We compare our results to M-dwarf rotation studies in the literature based on both spectroscopic and photometric measurements. Like other authors, we find an increase in the fraction of rapid rotators with decreasing stellar temperature, exemplified by a sharp increase in rotation near the M4 transition to fully convective stellar interiors, which is consistent with the hypothesis that fully convective stars are unable to shed angular momentum as efficiently as those with radiative cores. We compare a sample of targets observed both by APOGEE and the MEarth transiting planet survey and find no cases where the measured and rotation period are physically inconsistent, requiring . We compare our spectroscopic results to the fraction of rotators inferred from photometric surveys and find that while the results are broadly consistent, the photometric surveys exhibit a smaller fraction of rotators beyond the M4 transition by a factor of ∼2. We discuss possible reasons for this discrepancy. Given our detection limit, our results are consistent with a bimodal distribution in rotation that is seen in photometric surveys.

High-resolution H-band Spectroscopy of Be Stars with SDSS-III/APOGEE. II. Line Profile and Radial Velocity Variability

Abstract We report on the H-band spectral variability of classical Be stars observed over the course of the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), one of four subsurveys comprising SDSS-III. As described in the first paper of this series, the APOGEE B-type emission-line (ABE) star sample was culled from the large number of blue stars observed as telluric standards during APOGEE observations. In this paper, we explore the multi-epoch ABE sample, consisting of 1100 spectra for 213 stars. These “snapshots” of the circumstellar disk activity have revealed a wealth of temporal variability including, but not limited to, gradual disappearance of the line emission and vice versa over both short and long timescales. Other forms of variability include variation in emission strength, emission peak intensity ratios, and emission peak separations. We also analyze radial velocities (RVs) of the emission lines for a subsample of 162 stars with sufficiently strong features, and we discuss on a case-by-case basis whether the RV variability exhibited by some stars is caused by binary motion versus dynamical processes in the circumstellar disks. Ten systems are identified as convincing candidates for binary Be stars with as of yet undetected companions.

Chemical trends in the Galactic halo from APOGEE data

The galaxy formation process in the $\Lambda$-Cold Dark Matter scenario can be constrained from the analysis of stars in the Milky Way's halo system. We examine the variation of chemical abundances in distant halo stars observed by the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), as a function of distance from the Galactic center ($r$) and iron abundance ([M/H]), in the range 5 $\lesssim r \lesssim$ 30 kpc and $-2.5 <$ [M/H] $<$ 0.0. We perform a statistical analysis of the abundance ratios derived by the APOGEE pipeline (ASPCAP) and distances calculated by several approaches. Our analysis reveals signatures of a different chemical enrichment between the inner and outer regions of the halo, with a transition at about 15 kpc. The derived metallicity distribution function exhibits two peaks, at [M/H] $\sim -1.5$ and $\sim -2.1$, consistent with previously reported halo metallicity distributions. We obtain a difference of $\sim 0.1$ dex for $\alpha$-element-to-iron ratios for stars at $r > 15$ kpc and [M/H] $> -1.1$ (larger in the case of O, Mg and S) with respect to the nearest halo stars. This result confirms previous claims for low-$\alpha$ stars found at larger distances. Chemical differences in elements with other nucleosynthetic origins (Ni, K, Na, and Al) are also detected. C and N do not provide reliable information about the interstellar medium from which stars formed because our sample comprises RGB and AGB stars and can experience mixing of material to their surfaces.

Cosmic variance in [O/Fe] in the Galactic disk

We examine the distribution of the [O/Fe] abundance ratio in stars across the Galactic disk using H-band spectra from the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). We minimize systematic errors by considering groups of stars with similar atmospheric parameters. The APOGEE measurements in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 reveal that the square root of the star-to-star cosmic variance in the oxygen-to-iron ratio at a given metallicity is about 0.03-0.04 dex in both the thin and thick disk. This is about twice as high as the spread found for solar twins in the immediate solar neighborhood and the difference is probably associated to the wider range of galactocentric distances spanned by APOGEE stars. We quantify the uncertainties by examining the spread among stars with the same parameters in clusters; these errors are a function of effective temperature and metallicity, ranging between 0.005 dex at 4000 K and solar metallicity, to about 0.03 dex at 4500 K and [Fe/H]= -0.6. We argue that measuring the spread in [O/Fe] and other abundance ratios provides strong constraints for models of Galactic chemical evolution.

INFRARED LABORATORY OSCILLATOR STRENGTHS OF Fe I IN THEH-BAND

We report experimental oscillator strengths for 28 infrared Fe I transitions, for which no previous experimental values exist. These transitions were selected to address an urgent need for oscillator strengths of lines in the H-band (between 1.4 um and 1.7 um) required for the analysis of spectra obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). Upper limits have been placed on the oscillator strengths of an additional 7 transitions, predicted to be significant by published semi-empirical calculations, but not observed to be so.
