Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity is Closely Associated with Skeletal Muscle Mass: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Skeletal muscle is of great importance for human activity and quality of life, as its loss contributes greatly to immobilization, especially for aged individuals. An increased dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins may be beneficial for muscle loss because of aging. However, the quantitative relationship between total antioxidation capacity (TAC) of antioxidant vitamins and muscle mass is undetermined. 4009 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed with demographic, lifestyle and dietary intake adjustment factors. The dose saturation effect was also determined by a saturation effect analysis. Subgroup analysis were performed forage and sex. In the fully adjusted model, per unit increase of dietary TAC was associated with an increase of 0.018 g/kg appendicular lean mass (95% CI: 0.007-0.029), 0.014 g/kg trunk lean mass (95% CI: 0.004-0.024) and 0.035 g/kg total lean mass (95% CI: 0.014-0.055). TAC was associated with an decrease of 0.004 kg/kg total percent fat (95% CI: -0.006--0.002), 0.005 kg/kg trunk percent fat (95% CI: -0.007--0.002) and 0.003 kg/m2 BMI (95% CI: -0.006--0.001) at the same time. Subgroup analysis indicated that women and adults <50 years may experience the most significant association between TAC and skeletal muscle mass. We revealed a positive correlation between TAC and lean body mass, a negative association between TAC and body fat and BMI. Saturation values were found among people aged 40-59. Age and sex mediate these associations.

Associations between dietary antioxidant vitamins and risk of glioma: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Epidemiological studies investigating the potential associations between antioxidant vitamins intake and risk of glioma have yielded inconsistent results. To address this, we carried out a systematic review and updated meta-analysis to explore the relationship between dietary antioxidant vitamins intake and risk of glioma. We comprehensively searched electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wan fang Data from their inception to March 2024. We employed fixed-effects or random-effects models to estimate the pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between dietary antioxidant vitamins intake and risk of glioma. Publication bias was assessed through the visual inspection of the funnel plots and quantified by the Begg's and Egger's tests. Heterogeneity across studies was assessed using the Cochran's Q test and I-square (I2). Additionally, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to explore potential sources of heterogeneity and evaluate the robustness of the results. Overall, a total of 15 articles involving 3,608 glioma cases and 771,930 participants were included in the final analysis. The pooled analyses revealed that the highest intake of vitamin C significantly reduced the risk of glioma (RR = 0.78; 95%CI: 0.63-0.96; P = 0.022), compared to the lowest intake. However, no significant associations were observed between vitamin A and vitamin E intake and the risk of glioma (P>0.05). Subgroup analyses revealed the inverse association between vitamin C intake and risk of glioma in the population-based case-control studies (RR = 0.82; 95%CI: 0.68-1.00, P = 0.049) and study quality <7(RR = 0.52, 95%CI: 0.29-0.92, P = 0.025). Our findings show that higher intake of vitamin C is strongly associated with a reduced risk of glioma, although a dose-response relationship was not evident. Future large-scale prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Causal relationships between dietary antioxidant vitamin intake and atopic dermatitis: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Oxidative stress is strongly associated with atopic dermatitis (AD), and increased antioxidant intake could potentially reduce the risk of or alleviate its symptoms. However, the argument is disputed. Therefore, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the causal relationship between dietary antioxidant vitamin intake and AD. We applied MR analysis to examine the causative association between dietary antioxidant vitamin intake (vitamin C, vitamin E, carotene, and retinol) and AD. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data for antioxidant vitamins intake and AD were obtained from the IEU OpenGWAS database and the UK biobank. Our study consisted of two major parts, MR analysis to detect the causal relationship between exposure and outcome, and sensitivity analysis as supplemental evidence to verify the robustness of the results. The results revealed a suggestive causal relationship between vitamin E intake and AD (p=0.038, OR 95% CI=0.745-0.992). However, there was no causal relationship between the other three vitamins (vitamin C, carotene, and retinol) and AD (p=0.507, OR 95% CI=0.826-1.099) (p=0.890, OR 95% CI=0.864-1.184) (p=0.492, OR 95% CI=0.893-1.264). None of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected as heterogeneous and pleiotropy in the sensitivity analysis (p>0.05). The analysis suggested that dietary intake of vitamin E may potentially lower the risk of AD. Conversely, intake of vitamin C, retinol, and carotene is not causally related to AD. Although vitamin E intake could be protective against AD, intake of dietary antioxidant vitamins to prevent or treat AD is not necessary.

Anthropometric Indices and Prevalence of Iron Deficiency Anaemia among School Children in Delta State, Nigeria: an Intervention Study

Abstract Background Anaemia being a condition of low levels of haemoglobin in the blood is a public health problem that affects approximately 1.3 to 2.2 billion people worldwide. Aim This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anaemia and its association with anthropometric measurements among school children in Delta State, Nigeria. Materials and Methods The study was a pretest-postest study of 201 primary school (age 6-12 years) and secondary school (age 13-19 years) respondents randomly selected from primary and secondary schools in the three senatorial districts of Delta State. Eighty-three (41.3%) males and 118 (58.7%) females with a mean age of 12.30 ± 3.14 years were enrolledin the study. The preventive intervention protocol consisted of a single dose of vitamin A, daily vitamin C, weekly vitamin E, and twice weekly ferrous sulphate supplements administered for five weeks. Sociodemographic and anthropometric data were collected. Assessment of anaemia was done by pretest-postest haemoglobin determination. Results The prevalence of anaemia at baseline was 38.3% and 0% post-intervention. The prevalence of stunting, underweight, and thinness at baseline were 7.0%, 14.3 % and 15.0%, respectively, and post-intervention were 5.5%, 8.7% and 8.5%, respectively. The prevalence ofoverweight at baseline and post-intervention was 5.0%. The correlation between anaemia and underweight was r =-0.399, p = 0.005. The correlation between anaemia and body mass index wasr = -0.234, ρ&lt; 0.001. Conclusion Nutritional deficiency could cause anaemia among school children. However, intake of antioxidant vitamins and iron might help to reduce the burden.

Role of Antioxidant Vitamins in Oral Submucous Fibrosis: A Narrative Review.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) has a high rate of malignant transformation and is an insidious chronic inflammatory disease. Though this disorder seems to be multifactorial in origin, betel quid chewing appears to be the main etiologic factor. Various treatment strategies have been attempted but none proven to cure the disorder because of its multimodal pathogenesis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) appear to have a role in cancer formation. As OSMF is an oral premalignant disorder and found to be associated with carcinogens like areca nut and tobacco, it is believed to have some relationship with ROS. Tissue damage due to ROS along with other mechanisms may result in the complex pathophysiology of OSMF. The antioxidant system in the body helps to prevent damage caused by highly reactive ROS and helps in the repair of tissues. To study the levels of oxidative stress and antioxidant vitamins in OSMF condition, the present review was done. We carried out a thorough literature search to identify original reports and studies determining the status of oxidative stress and antioxidant vitamins in OSMF condition using several databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. Our review observed that the oxidative stress increased in the condition of OSMF as shown by an increase in malonaldehyde (MDA) and a decrease in antioxidant vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Also, after the intake of antioxidant vitamins, there was symptomatic improvement in OSMF patients. With the help of identifying oxidative stress and antioxidant status, we can assess the clinical stage of OSMF and can develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Risk of Disabling Dementia: Japan Public Health Center Disabling Dementia Study

BackgroundFruits and vegetables contain abundant amounts of antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C, α-carotene, and β-carotene. Few prospective observational studies have investigated the effects of fruit and vegetable intake on the risk of dementia, and the results are inconsistent. ObjectivesOur aim was to examine associations between fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of disabling dementia. MethodsWe conducted a follow-up survey within the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study involving 42,643 individuals aged 50–79 y at baseline (2000–2003). Dietary fruit and vegetable intakes and related antioxidant vitamin intakes (i.e., α-carotene, β-carotene, and vitamin C) were determined using a food frequency questionnaire. The diagnosis of disabling dementia was made based on the daily living disability status related to dementia under the Japanese long-term care insurance program from 2006 to 2016. Hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for disabling dementia were estimated using area-stratified Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for potential confounding factors. ResultsA total of 4994 cases of disabling dementia were recorded. We observed an inverse association between total fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of dementia among males and females: the multivariate hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the highest compared with lowest quartiles of intake were 0.87 (0.76, 0.99) (P- trend = 0.05) among males and 0.85 (0.76, 0.94) (P- trend = 0.006) among females. Among antioxidant vitamins, vitamin C intake was inversely associated with the risk of dementia among males and females: the multivariate hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the highest compared with lowest quartiles of intake were 0.71 (0.61, 0.84) (P- trend < 0.0001) among males, and 0.76 (0.67, 0.86) (P- trend < 0.0001) among females. ConclusionsFruit and vegetable intake and dietary intake of vitamin C may contribute to reducing the risk of disabling dementia among males and females.

Dietary Intake of Antioxidant Vitamins and Its Relation to the Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease in Adults With Preserved Renal Function

It is expected that antioxidants contribute to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there are no data on the protective effect of dietary antioxidant vitamins on CKD. The purpose of study was to evaluate the renoprotective effect of dietary antioxidant vitamins in the general population. The study participants were 127,081 Korean adults with preserved renal function with estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥60mL/min/1.73m2. They were categorized into 3 groups by tertile levels of dietary antioxidant vitamins intake including vitamins C, E, and A. Cox proportional hazard assumption was used to calculate multivariable hazard ratios and 95% confidence interval for the incident moderate to severe CKD (adjusted hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]) according to tertile levels of dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins. Subgroup analysis was conducted to evaluate the risk of progression from normal to mildly decreased renal function, and from mildly decreased renal function to moderate to severe CKD. The risk of moderate to severe CKD was not significantly associated with the third tertile of dietary antioxidant vitamin intake including vitamin C (1.02 [0.78-1.34]), E (0.96 [0.73-1.27]), and A (0.98 [0.74-1.29]). Additionally, any tertile groups didn't show the significant association with the risk of moderate to severe CKD. Subgroup analysis also didn't show the decreased risk of progression from normal to mildly decreased renal function, and from mildly decreased renal function to moderate to severe CKD in any tertile groups. Dietary intake of vitamins C, E, and A was not significantly associated with the risk of CKD progression.

Dietary Consumption of Antioxidant Vitamins in Relation to Prostate Cancer Risk in Japanese Men: The Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study.

Many epidemiological studies have investigated dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins in relation to prostate cancer risk in Western countries, but the results are inconsistent. However, few studies have reported this relationship in Asian countries. We investigated the association between intake of vitamins, including lycopene, α-carotene, β-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, with prostate cancer risk in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective (JPHC) study. 40,720 men without history of cancer finished the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and were included in the study. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of prostate cancer risk were calculated according to the quintiles of energy-adjusted intake of vitamins using Cox models. After an average of 15.2 years (617,599 person-years in total) of follow-up, 1,386 cases of prostate cancer were identified, including 944 localized cases and 340 advanced cases. No associations were observed in consumption of antioxidant vitamins, including α-carotene, β-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E, and prostate cancer risk. Although higher lycopene intake was associated with increased risk of prostate cancer (highest vs lowest quintile, HR 1.24; 95% CI, 1.04-1.47; P for trend = 0.01), there was a null association of lycopene intake with risk of prostate cancer detected by subjective symptoms (HR 1.12; 95% CI, 0.79-1.58; P for trend = 0.11). Our study suggested no association between antioxidant intake of vitamins and prostate cancer risk.

Antioxidant Vitamin Intake and LOX-Index in Japanese Municipal Workers.

Antioxidant vitamin intake has been reported to be associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular diseases. To date, however, no study has examined the association between antioxidant vitamin intake and LOX-index, a predictive biomarker of cardiovascular disease. We investigated the cross-sectional association between antioxidant vitamin (α-carotene, β-carotene, α-tocopherol, and vitamin C) intake and LOX-index in Japanese municipal workers. Participants were 346 workers (171 men and 175 women aged 19-71 y) who received a health check-up and participated in a nutrition and health survey. Antioxidant vitamin intake was assessed using a validated brief self-administered diet history questionnaire. LOX-index was calculated by multiplying serum concentrations of the soluble form of lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor 1 by those of LOX-1 ligands containing apolipoprotein B. Multiple regression analysis was used to estimate the geometric mean of LOX-index according to tertile of each antioxidant vitamin intake. Overall, α-carotene, β-carotene, α-tocopherol, and vitamin C intake were not associated with LOX-index. However, in stratified analyses by sex, geometric means of LOX-index tended to decrease with antioxidant vitamin intake in women, but not in men. The geometric means of LOX-index for the lowest through highest tertile of α-carotene intake were 771 (604-984), 639 (511-799), and 564 (469-677) (p for trend=0.07). Our results suggest that there is no association between antioxidant vitamin intake and LOX-index in Japanese workers. The suggestive inverse association between antioxidant vitamin intake and LOX-index in women warrants further investigation.

Associations of micronutrient dietary patterns with sarcopenia among US adults: a population-based study.

Current epidemiological evidence points to an association between micronutrient (MN) intake and sarcopenia, but studies have focused on single MN, and no combined effects on MNs have been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different MN intake patterns and sarcopenia and skeletal muscle mass. We performed a population-based cross-sectional study, with a total of 5,256 U.S. adults aged 20-59 years, and we collected total daily MN intake and appendicular skeletal muscle mass measured by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain nutrient patterns and principal component scores based on the intake of 14 MNs, and logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effects of single MN and MN intake patterns on sarcopenia and muscle mass. We defined three MN intake patterns by PCA: (1) adherence to VitB-mineral, high intake of vitamin B and minerals; (2) adherence to VitAD-Ca-VB12, high intake of vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin B12; and (3) adherence to Antioxidant Vit, high intake of antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, and K. These three nutrient patterns explained 73.26% of the variance of the population. A negative association was observed between most single MN intakes and sarcopenia, and after adjusting for confounders, adherence to the highest tertile of the three nutrient patterns was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia and relatively higher skeletal muscle mass compared to the lowest adherence. In subgroup analysis, MN intake patterns were significantly correlated with sarcopenia in middle-aged females. Nutritional patterns based on MN intake were significantly related to sarcopenia, indicating that MNs interact with each other while exerting their individual functions, and that MN dietary patterns may provide promising strategies for preventing the loss of muscle mass, with further prospective studies warranted in the future.

Oxidative stress-related genetic variation and antioxidant vitamin intake in intact and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm: a Swedish population-based retrospective cohort study.

The aim of this study is to investigate how genetic variations in genes related to oxidative stress, intake of antioxidant vitamins, and any potential interactions between these factors affect the incidence of intact abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and its rupture (rAAA), accounting for sex differences where possible. The present retrospective cohort study (n = 25 252) uses baseline single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and total antioxidant vitamin intake data from the large population-based, Malmö Diet and Cancer Study. Cumulative incidence of intact AAA was 1.6% and of rAAA 0.3% after a median follow-up of 24.3 years. A variant in NOX3 (rs3749930) was associated with higher rAAA risk in males [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 2.49; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.36-4.35] and the overall population (aHR: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.05-3.37). Higher intakes of antioxidant vitamins, riboflavin, and folate were associated with 20% and 19% reduced intact AAA incidence, respectively. Interestingly, the inverse associations between riboflavin and vitamin D intake with intact AAA incidence were stronger in the individuals carrying the NOX3 variant as compared with the wild-type recessive genotype, i.e. by 60% and 66%, respectively (P for interaction < 0.05). Higher riboflavin intake was associated with a 33% male-specific intact AAA risk reduction, while higher intake of vitamin B12 intake was associated with 55% female-specific intact AAA risk increase; both these associations were significantly modified by sex (P for interaction < 0.05). Our findings highlight the role of oxidative stress genetic variations and antioxidant vitamin intake in AAA. Although a low AAA/rAAA sample size limited some analyses, especially in females, our findings highlight the need for future randomized controlled trials and mechanistic studies, to explore the potential benefits of antioxidant vitamins while accounting for genetic and sex differences.

Relationship between food-derived antioxidant vitamin intake and breast cancer risk: a mendelian randomized study.

In previous observational studies, food-derived antioxidant vitamins have been suggested to be associated with breast cancer. However, the findings were inconsistent and the causal relationship could not be clearly elucidated. To confirm the potential causal relationship between food-derived antioxidants (retinol, carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E) and the risk of breast cancer, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study. The instrumental variables (IVs) as proxies of genetic liability to food-derived antioxidant vitamins were obtained from the UK Biobank Database. We extracted breast cancer data (122,977 cases and 105,974 controls) from the Breast Cancer Consortium (BCAC). In addition, we studied estrogen expression status categorically, including estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer (69,501 cases and 105,974 controls) and versus estrogen receptor (ER-) negative breast cancer (21,468 cases and 105,974 controls). We performed two-sample Mendelian randomization study, and inverse variance-weighted (IVW) test was regarded as main analysis. Sensitivity analyses were further conducted to assess heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy. The results of IVW showed that among the four food-derived antioxidants, only vitamin E had protective effect on the risk of overall breast cancer (OR = 0.837, 95% CI 0.757-0.926, P = 0.001) and ER+ breast cancer (OR = 0.823, 95% CI 0.693-0.977, P = 0.026). However, we found no association between food-derived vitamin E and ER- breast cancer. Our study suggested food-derived vitamin E can decrease the risk of breast cancer overall and ER+ breast cancer, and the robustness of our results was confirmed by sensitivity analyses.

Associations of dietary vitamin A and C intake with asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic respiratory diseases.

Asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) are closely related and considered as allergic respiratory diseases (ARD), and their prevalence has recently increased. Data on the association of dietary antioxidant vitamin intake with asthma and AR in adults are limited. The present study aimed to investigate the associations of vitamin A and C intake with asthma, AR, and all cases of both diseases in young adults who participated in a cross-sectional national survey, with the use of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level as an effect modifier. This study included 6,293 male and female adults aged 20-49 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted between 2016 and 2018. The questionnaire-based reports on asthma and AR diagnosis were used to determine outcome variables. Further, 24-h recall data on dietary vitamin A and C, carotene, and retinol intake were acquired. Logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Dietary vitamin C intake was inversely associated with asthma prevalence among participants with hs-CRP levels (≥ 1 mg/L); the OR of asthma prevalence was 0.27 (95% CI, 0.08-0.84) for participants with vitamin C consumption ≥ 75 mg/day compared with those consuming < 20 mg/day. Similar association analyses limiting to non-users of dietary supplements were performed to rule out the potential effects of supplement intake on the outcomes; results showed a stronger association. However, the association between vitamin C and asthma was not significant in participants with hs-CRP levels < 1 mg/L; the OR of asthma was 1.44 (95% CI, 0.66-3.16) for participants with vitamin C consumption ≥ 75 mg/day compared with those consuming < 20 mg/day. Vitamin C intake was not associated with AR. Moreover, there was no association between vitamin A intake and neither asthma nor AR. These findings suggest that higher vitamin C intake may play a potential role in reducing asthma prevalence. Nevertheless, further studies should be conducted to evaluate whether this association is causal.

Association between Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity of Antioxidant Vitamins and the Risk of Stroke among US Adults.

The intake of antioxidant vitamins can scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which may be beneficial for stroke. However, the relationship between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of antioxidant vitamins and stroke is controversial. This study aims to investigate the association between dietary TAC and the risk of stroke in US adults. This study included participants over 20 years old from the 2001-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Data from two 24 h dietary recalls were used to estimate the usual intake of antioxidant vitamins. TAC was calculated by the vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity reference values of individual antioxidant vitamins. Survey-weighted generalized linear models were performed to evaluate the relationship between TAC and the risk of stroke. A restricted cubic spline regression model was used to investigate the dose-response association. A total of 37,045 participants was involved, of whom 1391 suffered a stroke. Compared with the first tertile, the participants in the second tertile of TAC showed a lower risk of stroke (OR = 0.788, 95% CI: 0.662, 0.936) after adjusting for potential risk factors. The dose-response analysis showed a gradual increase in the risk of stroke as TAC decreases. Subgroups analyses indicated that this association was primarily in the population of those aged over 60 years old, who were female, consumed alcohol, were a former smoker and inactive. The sensitivity analysis presented consistent results. These results suggest that deficiency of dietary TAC was associated with an increased risk of stroke, particularly in populations with underlying oxidative stress injury.

Association of Dietary Antioxidant Vitamin Intake and Gastric Cancer Risk According to Smoking Status and Histological Subtypes of Gastric Cancer: A Case-Control Study in Korea

Smoking is a risk factor for gastric cancer (GC) and causes oxidative stress. Antioxidant vitamins may protect against oxidative stress. This study aimed to determine the association between dietary antioxidant vitamin intake and GC risk according to smoking status and the histological subtype. This case-control study included 286 pairs of patients with GC and controls aged 20–79 years enrolled at two hospitals from 2002 to 2006, matched by age (± 2 years), sex, hospital, and participation period (± 1 years). Dietary information was collected using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). When stratified by smoking status, increased intake of vitamin C (OR = 0.38; 95% CI = 0.17–0.84 for highest vs. lowest; P for trend = 0.033) and folate (OR = 0.28; 95% CI = 0.12–0.64 for highest vs. lowest; P for trend = 0.003) decreased GC risk in nonsmokers. Vitamin C (P for interaction = 0.043) and folate (P for interaction =0.015) levels were significantly associated with smoking status. Similar results were observed in nonsmokers with diffuse and mixed types of GC, but not in those with intestinal type of GC. Therefore, we found an inverse association between higher intake of dietary vitamin C and folate with the risk of GC among nonsmokers. These protective associations were strong in nonsmokers with diffuse and mixed types of GC.

IntroductionIt remains unknown whether higher dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins could reduce the harmful effects of air pollution on incident diabetes mellitus. MethodsA total of 156,490 participants free of diabetes mellitus in the UK Biobank data were included in this analysis. Antioxidant vitamin intake was measured using a 24-h food intake questionnaire, and results were categorized as sufficient or insufficient according to the British Recommended Nutrient Intake. Exposure to fine particles (PM2.5), thoracic particles (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) was estimated using land use regression models at participants’ residences. Incident diabetes mellitus was identified using health administrative datasets. Cox regression models were used to assess the associations. ResultsA total of 4271 incident diabetes mellitus cases were identified during a median follow-up of 11.7 years. Compared with participants with insufficient intake of antioxidant vitamins, those with sufficient consumption had a weaker association between air pollution (PM2.5, PM10 and NO2) and diabetes mellitus [sufficient vs. insufficient: HR = 1.12 (95 % CI: 0.87, 1.45) vs. 1.69 (95 % CI: 1.42, 2.02) for PM2.5, 1.00 (95 % CI: 0.88, 1.14) vs. 1.21 (95 % CI: 1.10, 1.34) for PM10, and 1.01 (95 % CI: 0.98, 1.04) vs. 1.05 (95 % CI: 1.03, 1.07) for NO2 (all p for comparison < 0.05)]. Among different antioxidant vitamins, we observed stronger effects for vitamin C and E. ConclusionOur study suggests that ambient air pollution is one important risk factor of diabetes mellitus, and sufficient intake of antioxidant vitamins may reduce such adverse effects of air pollution on diabetes mellitus.

Associations between Dietary Antioxidant Vitamin Intake and the Changes in Bone Mass in Chinese Adolescents: A 2.5-Year Longitudinal Study.

(1) Background: Optimal bone mass accumulation during adolescence is crucial for maximising peak bone mass during adulthood. Dietary antioxidant vitamins may contribute to bone mass accumulation. This 2.5-year-long longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the relationships between dietary vitamin A, C, and E intakes and the annual changes in bone parameters among Chinese adolescents. (2) Method: Subjects aged 10–18 years (n = 1418) were recruited from a secondary school in Jiangmen, China. Dietary vitamin A, C, and E intakes were assessed using 24 h dietary records over 3 consecutive days. The Sahara Clinical Bone Sonometer was used to measure the broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) and the speed of sound (SOS). Their annual changes were then calculated (i.e., BUA%/year, SOS%/year). The associations were detected after adjusting for the baseline bone phenotype; age; sex; weight; height; pubertal stage; physical activity; and dietary intakes of vitamin D, calcium and energy. (3) Results: A curvilinear relationship was found between the dietary intake of vitamin C and BUA%/year (p = 0.026); further analyses in the subgroups revealed that this relationship was observed in male adolescents (p = 0.012). A positive association was observed only in boys with a dietary vitamin C intake of ≥159.01 mg/day (β = 0.395, p = 0.036). Moreover, a linear positive association was shown between the dietary intake of vitamin E and BUA%/year in female adolescents (β = 0.082, p = 0.033). (4) Conclusion: Our findings indicated that dietary vitamin C intake has a threshold effect on bone mass gain in male adolescents and that dietary vitamin E intake could be a positive predictor of bone mass gain in female adolescents.

Causal associations between dietary antioxidant vitamin intake and lung cancer: A Mendelian randomization study.

BackgroundOxidative stress is currently considered to be closely related to the occurrence of respiratory tumors, especially lung cancer. Many observational studies have shown that increased antioxidant intake can reduce the risk of lung cancer, but the results are still controversial. Therefore, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomized (MR) analysis to clarify the causal relationship between antioxidant vitamins and lung cancer.MethodsTo assess the causal effect of dietary antioxidant vitamin intake on lung cancer, we conducted a two-sample MR analysis and we extracted single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are associated with antioxidants from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of the UK biobank. We gathered summary data for lung cancer from the International Lung Cancer Consortium (ILCCO), including 11,348 cases and 15,861 controls, and applied the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method as the primary MR analysis, and performed a sensitivity analysis to verify the results.ResultsThe results showed that higher dietary retinol intake was causally associated with lung cancer overall [odds ratio (OR) = 1.844, 95% CI, 1.359–2.502, p = 0.00009], squamous cell lung cancer (OR = 2.162, 95% CI, 1.117–4.183, p = 0.022), and lung adenocarcinoma (OR = 1.706, 95% CI, 1.084–2.685, p = 0.021). Additionally, carotene was positively correlated with lung adenocarcinoma (OR = 1.510, 95% CI, 1.002–2.276, p = 0.049). However, there was a non-significant relationship between the intake of other dietary antioxidants (vitamin C and vitamin E) and lung cancer.ConclusionOur research showed that dietary retinol intake has an adverse impact on lung cancer, and carotene might increase the risk of adenocarcinoma. This highlights the importance of revealing the underlying mechanisms of dietary antioxidant vitamins in lung cancer and delivers an important health message that dietary antioxidant vitamin intake may not be necessary for the prevention of lung cancer. It also provides a basis for future research.

Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity-A New Indicator of Healthy Diet Quality in Cardiovascular Diseases: A Polish Cross-Sectional Study.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between the dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as well as healthy diet quality, in a representative sample (n = 5690) of the whole Polish adult population (WOBASZ II study). Daily food consumption was estimated by the single 24 h dietary recall method. Antioxidant vitamins (C, E, and β-carotene) and minerals (Zn, Fe, Mn, and Cu) from the diet and supplements were calculated using 5D Diet software, and dietary total polyphenol intake (DTPI) was determined using the Phenol-Explorer database and our database. Total diet quality was measured by the Healthy Diet Indicator (HDI) based on World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for the prevention of CVD. DTAC was calculated using the data on food consumption and the antioxidant potential of foods measured by the FRAP (ferric ion reducing antioxidant potential) method. It was shown that higher DTAC was associated with a higher intake of polyphenols, antioxidant vitamins, and minerals. Moreover, a higher quartile of DTAC was associated with a reduced odds ratio for cardiovascular diseases in a Polish population, as well as with a higher HDI. Therefore, dietary recommendations for the prevention and therapy of CVDs should take into account a high DTAC. DTAC, measured by the FRAP method, can be considered an indicator of healthy diet quality.
