DRAMP 4.0: an open-access data repository dedicated to the clinical translation of antimicrobial peptides

Abstract Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are potential candidates for treating multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, yet only a small number of them have progressed into clinical trials. The main challenges include the poor stability and hemolytic/cytotoxic properties of AMPs. Considering this, in the update of the Data Repository of Antimicrobial Peptides (DRAMP), a new annotation on serum and protease stability is added, and special efforts were made to update the hemolytic/cytotoxic information of AMPs. The DRAMP 4.0 currently holds 30 260 entries (8 001 newly added), consisting of 11 612 general entries, 17 886 patent entries, 96 clinical entries, 377 specific entries, 110 entries with stability data, and 179 expanded entries. A total of 2891 entries possess experimentally determined hemolytic activity information, while 2674 entries contain cytotoxicity data by experimental validation. The update also covers new annotations, statistics, categories, functions, and download links. DRAMP is available online at http://dramp.cpu-bioinfor.org/.

Microbial metabolism disrupts cytokine activity to impact host immune response

Host–pathogen interactions are shaped by the metabolic status of both the host and pathogen. The host must regulate metabolism to fuel the immune response, while the pathogen must extract metabolic resources from the host to enable its own survival. In this study, we focus on the metabolic interactions of Mycobacterium abscessus with Drosophila melanogaster . We identify MAB_1132c as an asparagine transporter required for pathogenicity in M. abscessus . We show that this requirement is specifically associated with damage to the host: flies infected with MAB_1132c knockout bacteria, or with wild-type bacteria grown in asparagine-restricted conditions, are longer lived without showing a significant change in bacterial load. This is associated with a reduction in the host innate immune response, demonstrated by the decreased transcription of antimicrobial peptides as well as a significant reduction in the ability of the infection to disrupt systemic insulin signaling. Much of the increase in host survival during infection with asparagine-limited M. abscessus can be attributed to alterations in unpaired cytokine signaling. This demonstrates that asparagine transport in M. abscessus prior to infection is not required for replicative fitness in vivo but does significantly influence the interaction with the host immune responses.

Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity of Milk Peptides Released during the Growth of Lactobacilli in Milk

The present study is carried out to evaluate the antibacterial peptides released during the growth of lactobacilli in milk. Among 8 isolates of lactobacilli and yoghurt cultures used for study, the yoghurt culture released the maximum quantity of peptides (90 ± 1.25 µg/ml). When tested for antibacterial activity only yoghurt culture filtrate showed the antibacterial potential. Further, yoghurt culture lysate was prepared, which was used to treat the milk to bring in proteolysis. The supernatant obtained after centrifugation of this treated milk was used to partially purify peptides by gel filtration using Sephadex G-50. One of the three fractions (F2) showed antibacterial activity against test organisms, E. coli, Salmonella sp. and Shigella dysentriae. The peptide fraction was incorporated into curd samples inoculated with different lactic cultures and spiked with E. coli to determine antibacterial activity. It was found that peptide showed a bacteriostatic effect on E. coli, and the viable count of it was almost reduced by two log cycles when compared with the control.

Dietary Influence on Growth, Physicochemical Stability, and Antimicrobial Mechanisms of Antimicrobial Peptides in Black Soldier Fly Larvae

Safe antibiotic substitutes are needed given the rise in antimicrobial resistance, environmental contamination, and stringent antibiotic regulations. Insect-derived antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising candidates due to their antimicrobial activity, stability, and safety. This study investigates the antimicrobial mechanism of crude AMP extracts and their physicochemical characteristics in black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). The results indicated that BSFL reared on a wheat bran diet exhibited significantly improved growth performance and AMP production when compared to the other three diets. AMP extracts showed enhanced antimicrobial activity and physicochemical stability, including temperatures and metal ions except Cu+. Moreover, AMP extracts disrupted the cell membrane and inhibited the cell cycle of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), thus exhibiting antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, transcriptomic and KEGG enrichment analyses identified 509 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to the Toll and IMD signaling pathways. STRING and GeneMANIA analyses confirmed the association of these pathways with immune response and AMP secretion. qRT-PCR results showed elevated expression of immune genes (GNBP3, NFKBIA, GADD45, and Spz) in BSFL following S. aureus immunization, consistent with RNA-seq findings. These findings offer a valuable reference for using AMPs as antibiotic substitutes in animal feeds and highlight the need for further research on AMP purification and the synergistic regulation of protein synthesis and AMP production in BSFL.

A comprehensive analysis of the defense responses of Odontotermes formosanus (Shiraki) provides insights into the changes during Serratia marcescens infection

BackgroundOdontotermes formosanus (Shiraki) is a highly damaging agroforestry pest. Serratia marcescens is a broad-spectrum insecticidal pathogen and is highly lethal to O. formosanus. However, little is known about the mechanism between them. To improve the biological control of pests, a more in-depth analysis of the interactions between the pests and the pathogens is essential.ResultsWe used RNA-seq, enzyme activity assays and real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qPCR) to explore the defense responses of O. formosanus against SM1. RNA-seq results showed that 1,160, 2,531 and 4,536 genes were differentially expressed at 3, 6 and 12 h after SM1 infection, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) results indicated that immune response and energy metabolism were involved in the defense of O. formosanus against SM1. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and ROS synthesis genes were significantly elevated, and the antioxidant system were induced in O. formosanus after SM1 infection. In addition, the cellular immune genes were affected, and the Toll, immune deficiency (Imd), Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT), c-Jun N-terminal Kinase (JNK) and melanization pathways were activated. In vitro, Oftermicin, an antimicrobial peptide, had a significantly inhibitory effect on SM1. Furthermore, the expression levels and enzyme activities of phosphofructokinase (PFK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) in glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycles were increased.ConclusionsOur results clearly demonstrated that O. formosanus defended against SM1 by activating the antioxidant system, innate immunity and energy metabolism. This study would provide useful information for the development of biological controls of O. formosanus.

Natural Antimicrobial Monoterpenes as Potential Therapeutic Agents in Vaginal Infections: A Review

The recurrence and relapse of vaginal infections in women is a major issue and a challenging pathway to identify and develop new approaches to treatment. In the case of antibiotic therapy, contraceptives, and dietary changes, the recurrence of vaginitis is more common these days. Anaerobic bacteria, Candida spp., and trichomonas in the vaginal microflora cause both symptomatic and asymptomatic vaginitis, which includes vaginal inflammation. It changes the vaginal microbiota and decreases Lactobacilli spp. growth, which is maintaining the vaginal pH (3.5-4.5) through lactic acid production, antimicrobial peptides, bacteriocin, and bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances. The remarkable antimicrobial activity of plant’s producing metabolites like alkaloids, tannins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids and terpenoids for several vaginal infections have been reported in previous studies. Presented review focuses on the pivotal role of monoterpenes, providing a detailed description of thymol, geraniol, limonene, eugenol, eucalyptol, and α-terpineol as antimicrobial molecules in the treatment of vaginal infections. These monoterpenes are very good at killing E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus niger, Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida albicans which are the main microbes that cause vaginitis. Future research could explore the latent combinations of such monoterpenes as synergistic antimicrobial agents to treat bacterial and fungal vaginal infections, trichomoniasis, among other conditions.

Thanatin and vinyl sulfide analogues as narrow spectrum antimicrobial peptides that synergise with polymyxin B

Thanatin is a β-hairpin antimicrobial peptide cyclised by a single disulfide bond that has shown potent broad-spectrum activity towards bacterial and fungal pathogens. Towards Gram-negative species, thanatin acts both by forming trans-membranal pores and inhibiting outer membrane biogenesis by binding to LptA and blocking lipopolysaccharide (LPS) transport. Inspired by previous modifications of thanatin, an analogue was prepared which demonstrated potent but selective activity towards E. coli. Furthermore, this compound was shown to act in synergy with the highly potent FDA-approved lipopeptide antibiotic polymyxin B, which engages LPS at the cytoplasmic membrane. Four analogues of thanatin in which the disulfide was substituted for vinyl sulfide bridge mimetics were prepared, all of which retained similar secondary structures. Two of these retained substantial potency and selectivity towards E. coli. Importantly, synergy with polymyxin B was also maintained for the lead analogue. The vinyl sulfide potentially offers a facile replacement strategy for labile disulfide bonds and the selective activity and drug synergy of the reported thanatin analogues is promising for the development of narrow spectrum antimicrobials with reduced likelihood of resistance emerging in clinical settings.

Antimicrobial Activity of Diffusible Substances Produced by Lactococcus lactis Against Bacillus cereus in a Non-Contact Co-Culture Model

The symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Bacillus cereus often go unreported, complicating the effectiveness of conventional chemical and physical methods used to inhibit its growth in food production. This challenge, combined with the increasing use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the food industry and consumer preference for minimally processed products, prompted this study. The antibacterial activity of diffusible substances produced by Lactococcus lactis ATCC 11454 against Bacillus cereus NC11143 and Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655 was investigated using a non-contact co-culture model utilising deMann Rogosa and Sharpe broth, with glucose as a carbon source. This study employed plate counting and flow cytometry to assess the impact of these substances on bacterial growth and to analyse their composition and antimicrobial efficacy. The co-culture of Lactococcus lactis ATCC 11454 resulted in the production of a stable antimicrobial peptide, which was heat resistant and acid tolerant. Purification was achieved via ammonium sulphate precipitation and preparative HPLC, yielding a peptide with a molecular mass of 3.3 kDa, with daughter ion fractions similar to nisin A. Antimicrobial activity studies demonstrated that the diffusible substances effectively inhibited B. cereus growth over a period of eight days and exhibited bactericidal activity, killing 99% of the B. cereus cells. Additionally, these substances also inhibited Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655 grown under similar conditions. Comparative analysis revealed that in the co-culture assay, L. lactis produced a 50% higher yield of the antimicrobial peptides compared to pure cultures. Similarly, the specific growth rate of L. lactis was four times higher. With respect to protein purification and concentration, ammonium sulphate precipitation coupled with solid phase extraction was most effective in the purification and concentration of the diffusible substances. The findings provide a basis for utilising bacteriocin-producing strains as a preservation method, offering an alternative to traditional chemical and physical control approaches especially for the food industry.

Enhanced Antibacterial, Anti-Inflammatory, and Antibiofilm Activities of Tryptophan-Substituted Peptides Derived from Cecropin A-Melittin Hybrid Peptide BP100

The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens necessitates the development of novel antimicrobial agents. BP100, a short α-helical antimicrobial peptide (AMP) derived from cecropin A and melittin, has shown promise as a potential therapeutic. To enhance its efficacy, we designed and synthesized 16 tryptophan-substituted BP100 analogs based on helical wheel projections. Among these, BP5, BP6, BP8, BP11, and BP13 exhibited 1.5- to 5.5-fold higher antibacterial activity and improved cell selectivity compared to BP100. These analogs demonstrated superior efficacy in suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokine release in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells and eradicating preformed biofilms of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRPA). Additionally, these analogs showed greater resistance to physiological salts and serum compared to BP100. Mechanistic studies revealed that BP100 and its analogs exert their antibacterial effects through membrane disruption, depolarization, and permeabilization. Notably, these analogs showed synergistic antimicrobial activity with ciprofloxacin against MDRPA. Our findings suggest that these tryptophan-substituted BP100 analogs represent promising candidates for combating multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, offering a multifaceted approach through their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antibiofilm activities.

Polysaccharide-Based Coacervate Microgel Bearing Cationic Peptides That Achieve Dynamic Cell-Membrane Structure Alteration and Facile Cytosolic Infusion of IgGs.

Conjugates of the biocompatible polysaccharide pullulan with a cell membrane permeabilizing peptide L17E (PL-L17Es) were prepared with the aim of producing complex coacervates with pronounced intracellular antibody (IgG) delivery activity and stable structures. Coacervates with diameters of a few μm were formed simply by mixing PL-L17Es with IgG labeled with negatively charged fluorescent moieties of Alexa Fluor 488 [IgG(AF488)]. The coacervate resulted in a pronounced cytosolic infusion of IgG(AF488) and IgG binding to the target proteins inside the cell. The droplet structures were maintained even under high salt conditions, and the fluorescence in the droplet was not recovered after photobleaching, suggesting the formation of complex coacervate microgels. Dynamic changes in cell membrane structure to entrap the coacervate microgels were captured by confocal and electron microscopy, resulting in cytosolic IgG infusion. The use of M-lycotoxin instead of L17E resulted in a coacervate microgel with marked IgG delivery activity even in the presence of serum. Successful IgG delivery to primary hepatocytes, undifferentiated induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, and iPS cell-derived intestinal epithelial cells was also achieved. The construction of complex coacervate microgels with design flexibility and the validity of intracellular IgG delivery with high salt stability were thus demonstrated.

Antimicrobial Peptide Delivery Systems as Promising Tools Against Resistant Bacterial Infections

The extensive use of antibiotics during recent years has led to antimicrobial resistance development, a significant threat to global public health. It is estimated that around 1.27 million people died worldwide in 2019 due to infectious diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, according to the WHO. It is estimated that 700,000 people die each year worldwide, which is expected to rise to 10 million by 2050. Therefore, new and efficient antimicrobials against resistant pathogenic bacteria are urgently needed. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) present a broad spectrum of antibacterial effects and are considered potential tools for developing novel therapies to combat resistant infections. However, their clinical application is currently limited due to instability, low selectivity, toxicity, and limited bioavailability, resulting in a narrow therapeutic window. Here we describe an overview of the clinical application of AMPs against resistant bacterial infections through nanoformulation. It evaluates metal, polymeric, and lipid AMP delivery systems as promising for the treatment of resistant bacterial infections, offering a potential solution to the aforementioned limitations.

Innovative perspectives on bacteriocins: advances in classification, synthesis, mode of action, and food industry applications.

Bacteriocins, natural antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria, present eco-friendly, non-toxic, and cost-effective alternatives to traditional chemical antimicrobial agents in the food industry. This review provides a comprehensive update on the classification of bacteriocins in food preservation. It highlights the significant industrial potential of pediocin-like and two-peptide bacteriocins, emphasizing chemical synthesis methods like Fmoc-SPPS to meet the demand for bioactive bacteriocins. The review details the mode of action, focusing on mechanisms such as transmembrane potential disruption and pH-dependent effects. Furthermore, it addresses the limitations of bacteriocins in food preservation and explores the potential of nanotechnology-based encapsulation to enhance their antimicrobial efficacy. The benefits of nanoencapsulation, including improved stability, extended antimicrobial spectrum, and enhanced functionality, are underscored. This understanding is crucial for advancing the application of bacteriocins to ensure food safety and quality.

The ZmCPK39-ZmDi19-ZmPR10 immune module regulates quantitative resistance to multiple foliar diseases in maize.

Gray leaf spot, northern leaf blight and southern leaf blight are three of the most destructive foliar diseases affecting maize (Zea mays L.). Here we identified a gene, ZmCPK39, that encodes a calcium-dependent protein kinase and negatively regulates quantitative resistance to these three diseases. The ZmCPK39 allele in the resistant line displayed significantly lower pathogen-induced gene expression than that in the susceptible line. A marked decrease in ZmCPK39 abundance mitigated the phosphorylation and degradation of the transcription factor ZmDi19. This led to elevated expression of ZmPR10, a gene known to encode an antimicrobial protein, thereby enhancing maize resistance to foliar diseases. Moreover, the F1 hybrid with reduced ZmCPK39 expression favored disease resistance, thereby increasing yield. Hence, the discovery of the ZmCPK39-ZmDi19-ZmPR10 immune module provides insight into the mechanisms underlying broad-spectrum quantitative disease resistance and also offers a new avenue for the genetic control of maize foliar diseases.

Identification and synthesis of a long-chain antimicrobial peptide from the venom of the Liocheles australasiae scorpion.

Scorpion venom contains linear peptides without disulfide bonds in addition to peptides with disulfide bonds. Many such linear peptides have an amphiphilic α-helical structure, often with antimicrobial activity and can be classified into three groups based on their molecular size. Among them, long-chain antimicrobial peptides consisting of more than 40 residues have not been thoroughly studied due to the difficulty of synthesizing them. We have previously reported a transcriptome analysis of the venom gland of Liocheles australasiae that revealed precursor sequences of long-chain antimicrobial peptides. In the study reported here, we identified the mature structure of one such long-chain antimicrobial peptide, LaCT1, which we synthesized using chemical ligation to confirm its structure and evaluate its biological activities. The result showed that LaCT1 exhibited significant antimicrobial activity. In addition, we identified its partial peptides consisting of an N- or C-terminal region, which may be generated by enzymatic cleavage in the venom. Among them, only the peptide containing the N-terminal half region was active. LaCT1 also not only showed insecticidal activity but also synergistically enhanced the effects of another insecticidal peptide identified in L. australasiae venom as well. These results provide insights into the role of antimicrobial peptides in scorpion venom.

Antibacterial peptides from black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae: mode of action and characterization

Antibacterial peptides from black soldier fly larvae extract were prepared using Flash column chromatography. Three out of five fractions (F2, F3 and F4) showed antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes DMST 17303 with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1 mM, followed by Salmonella enterica Enteritidis DMST 15679 and Escherichia coli O157:H7 DMST 12743 with a MIC ranging from 4 to 8 mM. Due to the higher yield, F2 and F3 were further analyzed on their mode of action against L. monocytogenes DMST 17303. Both fractions, particularly F2, exerted antibacterial activity through inducing bacterial cell membrane disintegration and interaction with intracellular compounds including fatty acids, proteins, and nucleic acids. The F3 did not show significant hemolytic activity up to 4 mM, while F2 showed lower than 5% hemolysis up to 8 mM. Time-to-kill analysis revealed that F2 was more effective and exerted a sustainable killing effect after 2 and 4 h, depending on the concentration of 1 and 2×MIC, respectively, while the F3 at 2×MIC could completely kill the test bacteria within 24 h. Among the identified peptides in the fractions, those with charged, either positively or negatively, and moderate hydrophobicity of ranging 6.68–15.70, namely CGPPRQGPFPR, HLEEELK, LEEAEERAD, TEELEEAKKK, and KGNSELEEAKKK, are potential antimicrobial peptides.

Tissue nano-transfection of antimicrobial genes drives bacterial biofilm killing in wounds and is potentially mediated by extracellular vesicles

The emergence of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics is on track to become a major global health crisis. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new treatment options. Here, we studied the implementation of tissue-nanotransfection (TNT) to treat Staphylococcus aureus-infected wounds by delivering gene cargos that boost the levels of naturally produced antimicrobial peptides. The Cathelicidin Antimicrobial Peptide gene (CAMP), which produces the antimicrobial peptide LL-37, was used as model gene cargo. In vitro evaluation showed successful transfection and an increase in the transcription and translation of CAMP-coding plasmid in mouse primary epithelial cells. Moreover, we found that the extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from the transfected cells (in vitro and in vivo) carried significantly higher concentrations of CAMP transcripts and LL-37 peptide compared to control EVs, possibly mediating the trafficking of the antimicrobial contents to other neighboring cells. The TNT platform was then used in vivo on an excisional wound model in mice to nanotransfect the CAMP-coding plasmid on the edge of infected wounds. After 4 days of daily treatment, we observed a significant decrease in the bacterial load in the CAMP-treated group compared to the sham group. Moreover, histological analysis and bacterial load quantification also revealed that TNT of CAMP on S. aureus-infected wounds was effective in treating biofilm progression by reducing the bacterial load. Lastly, we observed a significant increase in macrophage recruitment to the infected tissue, a robust increase in vascularization, as well as and an increased expression of IL10 and Fli1. Our results demonstrate that TNT-based delivery of gene cargos coding for antimicrobial compounds to the wound is a promising approach for combating biofilm infections in wounds.

Development of α-Helical Antimicrobial Peptides with Imperfect Amphipathicity for Superior Activity and Selectivity.

The advancement of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as therapeutic agents is hindered by their poor selectivity. Recent evidence indicates that controlled disruption of the amphipathicity of α-helical AMPs may increase the selectivity. This study investigated the role of imperfect amphipathicity in optimizing AMPs with varied sequences to enhance their activity and selectivity. Among these, the lead peptide RI-18, characterized by an imperfectly amphipathic α-helical structure, demonstrated potent and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity without inducing hemolytic or cytotoxic effects. RI-18 effectively eliminated planktonic and biofilm-associated bacteria as well as persister cells and exhibited high bacterial plasma membrane affinity, inducing rapid membrane permeabilization and rupture. Notably, RI-18 significantly reduced bacterial loads without promoting bacterial resistance, highlighting its therapeutic potential. Overall, this study identified RI-18 as a promising antimicrobial candidate. The rational strategy of tuning imperfect amphipathicity to enhance the AMP activity and selectivity may facilitate the design and development of AMPs.

Biochemistry, Mechanistic Intricacies, and Therapeutic Potential of Antimicrobial Peptides: An Alternative to Traditional Antibiotics.

The emergence of drug-resistant strains of pathogens becomes a major obstacle to treating human diseases. Antibiotics and antivirals are in the application for a long time but now these drugs are not much effective anymore against disease-causing drugresistant microbes and gradually it is becoming a serious complication worldwide. The development of new antibiotics cannot be a stable solution to treat drug-resistant strains due to their evolving nature and escaping antibiotics. At this stage, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) may provide us with novel therapeutic leads against drug-resistant pathogens. Structurally, antimicrobial peptides are mostly α-helical peptide molecules with amphiphilic properties that carry the positive charge (cationic) and belong to host defense peptides. These positively charged AMPs can interact with negatively charged bacterial cell membranes and may cause the alteration in electrochemical potential on bacterial cell membranes and consequently lead to the death of microbial cells. In the present study, we will elaborate on the implication of AMPs in the treatment of various diseases along with their specific structural and functional properties. This review will provide information which assists in the development of new synthetic peptide analogues to natural AMPs. These analogues will eliminate the limitations of natural AMPs like toxicity and severe hemolytic activities.

Functional interplay between short antimicrobial peptides and model lipid membranes

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered an attractive generation of novel antibiotics due to their advantageous properties such as a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogens, low cytotoxicity, and drug resistance. Although they have common structural features and it has been widely demonstrated that bacterial membranes represent the main target of the peptide activity, the exact mechanism underlying the membrane perturbation by AMPs is not fully understood. Nevertheless, all the proposed modes of action implicate the preliminary interaction of AMPs with the negatively charged lipids in bacterial membranes. Recently, the structural and functional characterization of two AMPs, RiLK1 and RiLK3, was reported. Specifically, both peptides were revealed to be multitalented compounds capable of binding Gram-positive and Gram-negative liposome models with high affinity, but their mechanism of action remains elusive. In this paper, the effects of RiLK1 and RiLK3 on vesicles mimicking prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell membranes were further examined by using different approaches. Fluorescence and quenching assays either by acrylamide or lipophilic probes suggested that the peptides were mainly located at the interface of the negatively charged membranes that mimicked those of Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus, possibly oriented in a parallel manner. Furthermore, RiLK1 and RiLK3 caused a significant leakage of carboxyfluorescein from bacterial liposomes, demonstrating that they can permeabilize the target membranes at high doses. Conversely, both peptides appear to behave like cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) at concentrations near their MIC values evaluated against the bacterial targets. Moreover, Dynamic Light Scattering provided further insights on the mechanisms of antimicrobial peptide against the bacterial liposomes. Conclusively, in vitro experiments indicated that RiLK1 and RiLK3 displayed potent bacteriostatic efficacy at low micromolar concentrations against an antibiotic-resistant ESKAPE pathogen, making them a valuable tool in preventing and treating infections caused by such bacteria.
