Factors of Child Growth Failure Based on the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure in West Sulawesi Province

Background: The composite index of anthropometric failure (CIAF) provides a comprehensive measure of growth failure through various child anthropometric indicators. In regions with a high prevalence of stunting, several factors may contribute to the occurrence of growth failure in children under five years. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the incidence of child growth failure based on the CIAF in a province with high stunting prevalence in Indonesia. Methods: The cross-sectional study used the 2022 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) data. The sample comprised children aged 0-23 months from West Sulawesi Province, totaling 1,573 children. The number of samples analyzed was 1,327 children, excluding incomplete data and outliers that were values outside a certain range and treated as missing values based on the World Health Organization (WHO). Multivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression with a complex sample facility. Results: This study found that 24.9% of children experienced growth failure based on the CIAF. Factors associated with the incidence of growth failure based on the CIAF were older age between 12-23 months (OR=4.5; CI=2.36-8.43; p=0.000), birth weight less than 2,500 g (OR=6.85; CI=3.85-12.21; p=0.000), boys (OR=1.56; CI=1.13-2.15; p=0.000), incomplete immunization status (OR=1.8; CI=1.31-2.77; p=0.001), and poor economic status in quintile 1 (OR=2.1; CI=1.08-3.99; p=0.028). Conclusions: The risk factors for child growth failure based on the CIAF included older age, male sex, low birth weight, incomplete immunization status, and low economic status.

The Influence of Growth Hormone and Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 on Anthropometric Parameters in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

The goal is to study the indicators of somatotropic hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 to assess the effect on anthropometric indicators of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. 74 children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and 14 children in the control group were examined. Average age 12±3.5 years. The assessment of physical development was carried out on the basis of an assessment of anthropometric indicators — height and body weight with the calculation of BMI and compared with centile tables. Determination of the concentration of hormones such as GH and IGF-1 was determined by special ELISA kits using the enzyme immunoassay method using an analyzer (Mindray MR-96A). The obtained data were subjected to statistical processing. It was revealed that 8 (36.4%) boys and the majority of girls 14 (63.6%) achieved the target level of glycated hemoglobin. Children with T1DM are statistically significant and stunted in height and weight compared to healthy children in the control group.

DYNAMICS OF ANTHROPOMETRIC INDICATORS OF THE PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OF URBAN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS FROM 1925 TO 2022 IN THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS

Introduction. Secular changes in the somatometric parameters of children and adolescents of both sexes are observed in most countries of the world. The data in the literary sources are contradictory and indicate two opposite directions of the processes of changes in time the parameters of physical development - acceleration and deceleration, which points out to the need for their constant monitoring. Materials and methods. A comparative analysis of the main somatometric indicators of physical development (length and body weight) was carried out in children and adolescents of both sexes in the city of Gomel aged 8 to 16 years, obtained in 1925 (first group), 1973 (second group), 2010-2012 (third group), 2021-2022 (fourth group). These populations were homogeneous in place of residence, ethnicity, close in time of inspection and representative in number. The number of boys and girls in each age group was 100 or more people. Results. It was found that children and adolescents of both sexes of the Republic of Belarus examined in 2010-2012 and 2021-2022 had higher values of somatometric indicators (body length and weight) compared to their peers examined in 1925 and 1973 (p<0,05-0,001). At the same time, there were practically no statistically significant differences between the anthropometric indicators of schoolchildren of two gender groups surveyed in 2010-2012 and in 2021-2022. Conclusion. A comparative analysis of the anthropometric indicators of children and adolescents of both sexes aged 8-16 years from 1925 to 2022 indicates that the process of acceleration among urban schoolchildren in Belarus observed in the period from 1925 to 2012 stopped, which is indicated by the absence of statistically significant differences between the anthropometric indicators of schoolchildren surveyed in 2010-2012 and in 2021-2022.

Associations between prenatal metal exposure and growth rate in children: Based on Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study

BackgroundIt has been reported that prenatal metal exposure is associated with child anthropometry. However, studies focusing on the growth rate of anthropometry among children have not been conducted. This study aimed to examine associations between the exposure of multiple metals during pregnancy and the growth rate of anthropometry among offspring. Methods743 mother-child pairs from the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study (HBCS) were included. Levels of eleven metals in mother's blood during pregnancy were measured. Offspring had a mean of 5.7 measurements on anthropometric indicators including weight, length/height, head circumference, and body mass index (BMI) within 1.5 years of birth. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) model was used to investigate the associations between maternal metal exposure and growth rate of anthropometric indicators in children. Stratification analysis by sex was also examined. ResultsLevels of selenium (Se, β = 0.213, 95 % CI = 0.017 to 0.409, P = 0.033) were positively associated with length/height gain per month in children. Levels of chromium (Cr, β = 0.025, 95 % CI = 0.018 to 0.033, P < 0.001) were positively associated with the rate of weight gain. Levels of manganese (Mn, β = −0.030, 95 % CI = −0.052 to −0.008, P = 0.009) and cobalt (Co, β = −0.012, 95 % CI = −0.024 to −0.000, P = 0.044) were inversely associated with growth rate of head circumference. Children with higher maternal Mn levels had a lower BMI change rate. Associations between metals and growth rate were stronger in girls than in boys. Besides, significant associations between metal mixtures and growth rate were found. ConclusionPrenatal exposure to Se, Cr, Mn, and Co was associated with growth rate in children, with sex-specific disparities. Our results suggested important effects of maternal exposure to multiple metals on development in offspring.

Household food insecurity and physical activity behaviour in Ecuadorian children and adolescents: findings from the Ecuador 2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT-2018).

Ecuador has a high prevalence of household food insecurity (HFI) and is undergoing nutritional and epidemiologic transition. Evidence from high-income countries has reported negative or null associations between HFI and physical activity (PA) in children. It remains uncertain whether the same is true of those from low- and middle-income countries like Ecuador whose environmental and socio-demographic characteristics are distinct from those of high-income countries. We aimed to investigate the association of HFI with PA, sedentary behaviour (SB) and anthropometric indicators in children. Cross-sectional analysis of data from the nationally representative 2018 Ecuadorian National Health and Nutrition Survey. Data were collected on HFI, PA, SB, socio-demographic characteristics and measured height and weight. Unadjusted and adjusted linear, log-binomial and multinomial logistic regression analyses assessed the relationship of HFI with PA, SB, stunting and BMI-for-age. Ecuador. 23 621 children aged 5-17 years. Marginal and moderate-severe HFI was prevalent in 24 % and 20 % of the households, respectively. HFI was not associated with PA, SB, stunting nor underweight. Moderate-severe HFI was associated with a lower odds of overweight and obesity. However, adjustment for household assets attenuated this finding for overweight (adjusted OR:0·90, 95 % CI: 0·77, 1·05) and obesity (adjusted OR: 0·88, 95 % CI: 0·71, 1·08). HFI is a burden in Ecuadorian households, but is not associated with PA, SB nor anthropometric indicators in children aged 5-17 years. However, a concerning prevalence of insufficient PA was reported, emphasising the critical need for evidence-based interventions aimed at promoting PA and reducing SB.

Assessment of the physical development of children with and without high thrombogenic risk factors in the Health Center for Children

BACKGROUND: Up to 65% diseases associated with pathological thrombus have been described; more than 100 thrombogenic risk factors leading to vascular accidents have been studied. It is known that physical development is an important indicator of health in children. The relationship between the presence of thrombogenic risk factors in various disorders of physical development in children has been studied.&#x0D; AIM: To determine the relationship between physical development disorders in children and the presence of thrombogenic risk factors.&#x0D; MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 396 children aged 14–18 years, who underwent physical growth assessment using the sigma deviation method and genetic testing to determine polymorphisms of folate cycle genes and polymorphisms of thrombophilia genes. Statistical processing was carried out using the application package Statistica 10.0 (StatSoft, Inc., USA).&#x0D; RESULTS: The analysis of anthropometric indicators in children showed that in the group of the patients with thrombogenic risk factors, height and body weight values with average physical disharmonious development due to excess weight were statistically significantly higher than age-reference indicators.&#x0D; CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of the study, it has been shown that disharmony in physical development in children with high thrombogenic risk factors may be one of the risk factors for the development of thrombotic conditions.

Assessment of Changes in Trunk Parameters in Children with Scoliosis

In this article, we examined the anthropometric data of the physical parameters of children with scoliosis under the age of 12. A total of 400 people of both sexes with asthenic, hypersthenic and normosthenic body types were under observation, divided into three age periods (newborns (the first 4 weeks after birth), the first period of childhood (3-7 years) and the second period of childhood (8-12 years). Physical indicators include body length and weight, gowdy circumference. Anthropometric studies of children were studied using a centimeter tape, the data obtained were statistically processed. In the statistical processing of the study data, the method of variational statistics was used with the calculation of the arithmetic mean (M), the error of the arithmetic mean (± m), the degree of reliable probability (P). The results of the study show that the curvature of the spinal column leads to the fact that the morphological parameters of different parts of the body become smaller compared to healthy children. In the first period of childhood, when these indicators were almost the same in both sexes, significant differences were found in the second period of childhood. Thus, it was found that during puberty, the lag of anthropometric indicators in children with scoliosis is aggravated in comparison with healthy children.

Main anthropometric indicators of children and adolescents living in the Chuvash Republic in the dynamics of 137 years

Anthropometric studies conducted in 1884, 1928, 1946, 1965 and 1999 to study the characteristics of growth and weight indicators of children living in the territory of modern Chuvashia, partly reflected the influence of the living conditions of children in certain historical periods of the country's development: revolutions, civil and domestic wars, post-war stabilization, «perestroika». Over the last 22-year period, from 1999 to 2021, there has been the largest increase in the growth rate of indicators of the physical development of children and adolescents, which is considered as a positive trend, a manifestation of ongoing acceleration processes. It was revealed that in modern children, physiological growth jumps in comparison with their peers in 1884, 1930, and 1999 occur earlier - in the prepubertal period.

Diagnostic accuracy of anthropometric indices for metabolically healthy obesity in child and adolescent population.

A variable percentage of children and adolescents with obesity do not have cardiometabolic comorbidities. A phenotype called metabolically healthy obese (MHO) has emerged to describe this population subgroup. Early identification of this condition may prevent the progression to metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). A cross-sectional descriptive study of 265 children and adolescents from Cordoba (Spain) conducted in 2018. The outcome variables were MHO, established based on three criteria: International Criterion, HOMA-IR, and a combination of the previous two. The prevalence of MHO ranged from 9.4% to 12.8% of the study population, between 41% and 55.7% of the sample with obesity. The highest agreement was reached between the HOMA-IR definitions and the combined criteria. The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) was the indicator with the highest discriminant capacity for MHO in 2 of the three criteria, with its best cut-off point at 0.47 for both. The prevalence of MHO in children and adolescents differed according to the criteria used for diagnosis. The anthropometric variable with the most remarkable discriminating capacity for MHO was WHtR, with the same cut-off point in the three criteria analysed. This research work defines the existence of metabolically healthy obesity through anthropometric indicators in children and adolescents. Definitions that combine cardiometabolic criteria and insulin resistance are used to identify metabolically healthy obesity, as well as the prediction of this phenomenon through anthropometric variables. The present investigation helps to identify metabolically healthy obesity before metabolic abnormalities begin.

Динамика базовых антропометрических показателей детей раннего и дошкольного возраста в Республике Беларусь на рубеже XX–XXI веков

Introduction. In recent years, insufficient attention has been paid to the study of the dynamics of the growth and development of children of early and preschool age, their variability over time and depending on various factors of the external and internal environment. The literature data are contradictory and indicate two multidirectional processes – acceleration and deceleration. Materials and methods. A comparative analysis of basic anthropometric indicators of physical development (length and body weight) in children of early and preschool age in Belarus, obtained in 2021 (group I) and in 1989–1997 (group II), was carried out. These populations were homogeneous in place of residence, ethnicity, and close in time of inspection. The number of boys and girls in the first group was 700 people, in the second group – 3351 and 3175 people, respectively. Results. Monitoring of anthropometric indicators of children of early and preschool age allowed to establish the features of physical development. Boys of group I from birth to 6 years of age are significantly more likely to have higher body weight indicators compared to group II. In girls, this trend was not registered only at the age of 3 years (P&gt;0.05). In all age periods, both sexes of the group I significantly more often have higher body length indicators compared to the group II. The most pronounced difference in body length (over 4 cm) in children of the group I and group II was noted in boys and girls in the age groups of 2 and 5 years. The analysis shows an increase in somatometric indicators of physical development and the phenomenon of acceleration. Conclusion. The conducted studies have established the presence of higher values of body length and weight in children in 2021 compared to their peers in 1989–1997. Body Composition and Anthropometric Indicators in Children and Adolescents 6-15 Years Old.

The problem of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents has now become a major public health challenge worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of age and gender on body composition components and anthropometric indices of children and adolescents aged 6–15 years; in addition, the study aimed to assess body composition indices in relation to BMI (Body Mass Index) levels. The study was conducted at the end of 2019 and in the first quarter of 2020 among 181 pupils attending primary schools. Waist circumference, hip circumference, body weight, and body height were measured. The collected data were used to calculate and then to analyse BMI, WHR (Waist-Hip Ratio), and WHtR (Waist to Height Ratio) indices. Body composition was determined with the use of the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). The analyses’ statistics were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 24 and Excel. The statistical methods used included Chi2 tests of independence, one-factor analysis of variance, and two-factor analysis of variance taking into account the level of α = 0.05. Based on the results, there were no statistically significant differences in the gender and age distributions of the BMI groups. However, the analysis of interaction effects confirmed that there were statistically significant differences according to pubertal age and gender in body fat, muscle mass, hydration, and WHR. Body composition in boys and girls before the age of 12 is similar while, after the age of 12, there are differences between boys and girls in terms of body composition so there is a need to deepen the assessment of body mass, especially in adolescents at the age of puberty, by body composition analysis using the BIA method.

Materials and methods. A comparative analysis of the main indicators of physical development (body length and weight, head and chest) obtained in 2008 (group I) and 2018 (group II) by random sampling was carried out. These populations were homogeneous in place of residence, ethnicity, close in time of inspection and representative in number. The number of boys and girls in the group I was 100 people, in the group II – 75 and 70 people, respectively. Results. Monitoring of anthropometric indicators of body weight in newborn children confirmed the stability of this parameter and higher values in boys than in girls. Boys of group II from the age of 6 months have significantly lower body weight indicators compared to group I. Monitoring of body length in children of the first year of life over a 10-year period indicates that monthly gains in children of group II are lower than in group I. In 2018, boys from the age of 5 months had significantly lower head circumference compared to 2008. A significant decrease in the circumference of the chest was noted in boys of group II, starting from the 2nd month of life, in girls – from the 1st month, compared with children of group I. Conclusion. The analysis of anthropometric indicators in children in the first year of life over a ten-year period revealed a high intensity of their monthly gains in the first months of life with a gradual decrease in their intensity in the second half of the year. Significantly lower indicators of body weight and chest were established and a tendency to decrease body length and head circumference in children in 2018.

Analysis of physical development in children and adolescents is an integral to the monitoring of child population. Health status of children and adolescents is an essential criterion of societal welfare. Numerous studies of physical development in children indicate the heterogenous nature of growth and develpmental processes in children living in various regions of Russia. The study was aimed to perform the comparative analysis of physical development between children aged 15–17 living in Samara (a total of 714 children were examined, among them 368 boys and 346 girls) and children of the same age group living in Nizhny Novgorod (a total of 689 children, among them 351 boys and 338 girls). In school students aged 16–17, significant differences in the mean height were revealed: adolescents living in Samara were taller than those living in Nizhny Novgorod (p = 0.001). The same trend was observed in girls of the same age group. Comparative analysis showed that girls aged 15–17 living in Samara were significantly taller (p &lt; 0.001) than girls who lived in Nizhny Novgorod. Assessment of body weight showed that the weight of boys aged 15–16 who lived in Samara was significantly higher compared to boys living in Nizhny Novgorod (p = 0.009). No significant differences were revealed between the groups of 17‑year‑old boys and the groups of girls aged 15–17 (р = 0.7). The findings on the differences in the anthropometric indicators of children living in Samara and Nizhny Novgorod justify the need for periodic development and use in healthcare practice of the regional standards for assessment of physical development in children and adolescents.

Influence of sugar consumption from foods with different degrees of processing on anthropometric indicators of children and adolescents after 18 months of follow-up.

Excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with the development of metabolic changes in children and adolescents. However, the consumption of total sugars, monosaccharides and disaccharides present in these ultra-processed foods and other food groups and its association with anthropometric indicators must be evaluated. Therefore, this study aimed at analysing the influence of sugar consumption from foods with different degrees of processing on anthropometric indicators of children and adolescents after 18 months of follow-up. This cohort study was conducted among 492 children and adolescents aged 7-15 years. Information on food consumption and anthropometry was collected during three follow-up stages. NOVA classification was used for food categorisation. The influence of sugar consumption on the variation of anthropometric measurements over time was evaluated using generalised estimation equation models. During the analysis period, for each increase of 1 g/d in the consumption of total sugars and monosaccharides from ultra-processed foods, there was an increase of 0·002 kg/m2 (P = 0·030) and 0·001 kg/m2 (P = 0·019) in BMI/Age; increase of 0·073 (P < 0·001), 0·032 (P < 0·001) and 0·100 (P < 0·001) in the BMI/Age z-score; and increase of 0·001 cm (P = 0·001), 0·001 cm (P = 0·003) and 0·003 cm (P < 0·001) in waist circumference, with the consumption of total sugars, monosaccharides and disaccharides, respectively. Our study findings support the evidence that the consumption of total sugars, monosaccharides and disaccharides from ultra-processed foods is associated with weight gain and abdominal fat in children and adolescents, which may represent an important risk factor for excess weight in this age group.

ОСОБЕННОСТИ НУТРИТИВНОГО СТАТУСА У ДЕТЕЙ СО СПАСТИЧЕСКИМИ ФОРМАМИ ДЕТСКОГО ЦЕРЕБРАЛЬНОГО ПАРАЛИЧА

Children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) are at risk of undernutrition, which increases with the severity of movement disorders. Objective of the study: to assess and compare anthropometric indicators and body composition in children with cerebral palsy, depending on the level of impairment of gross motor function classification system (GMFCS). Materials and methods of research: 102 children were included in a prospective open-label comparative single-center non-randomized study: 58 (56.8%) boys and 44 (43.1%) girls with cerebral palsy aged 2 years to 16 years and 9 months who were undergoing rehabilitation in the National Medical Research Center of Children's Health in the period from 2019 to 2021. Anthropometric measurements (body weight, length, knee height, triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses) were performed on admission. Body fat percentage (%FM) was calculated by CP-modified (Gurka) equations and compared with results obtained using bioelectrical impedance analysis. A survey on the EDACS scale was performed to determine the ability to eat and drink. Results: patients were divided into 2 groups: the main group – 53 children (52%) with GMFCS levels IV–V and a comparison group – 49 children (48%) with GMFCS levels I–III. The groups did not differ statistically significantly in terms of gender (p=0.956) and age (p=0.207). The median age in the main group was 7.1 years, in the comparison group – 5.3 years. Children of the main group had statistically significantly lower growth indicators (HAZ1 –1.5 [–2.6; –0.74] and HAZ2 –0.58 [–1.59; 0.44], p=0.003), BMI (BAZ1 –2.43 [–3.67; –0.93]; BAZ2 –0.91 [–1.942; 0.28], p&lt;0.001), higher frequency of oromotor dysfunction (42% and 4%, p&lt; 0.001), the percentage of severe wasting (59% and 16%, p&lt;0.001; OR 7.2 (95% CI 2.8–18.4) (p&lt;0.001). There was no significant difference in %FM between children of main and comparison groups. Patients even with moderate and severe undernutrition according to WHO criteria had normal or excess %FM. A moderate positive correlation was found between %FM calculated using the Gurka equations and those obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis (r=0.565, p=0.002). Conclusions: anthropometric indicators in children with CP deteriorate with an increase in the degree of neurological deficit. The use of BMI as the only marker of nutritional status is insufficient to properly diagnose of undernutrition and identify patients needed in nutritional interventions. For an adequate analysis of the nutritional status of children with CP, it is necessary to assess the body composition (measurement of the skinfold thicknesses or bioelectrical impedance analysis).

The First 5 Years Characteristics of Growth and Development of Children Residing in the Regions of Uzbekistan

Introduction: Nutritional issues in children are associated with a complex of factors. Early assistance to thechild is feasible with the on time detection of developing deviations in the health, growth and development.The actual tasks were to determine the level of growth and development of children in the regions of theRepublic of Uzbekistan, assess the effectiveness of programs implemented in the country to improvenutrition and prevent micronutrient deficiency based on the application of new standards for the growth anddevelopment of children, as well as develop relevant proposals and recommendations.Materials and Method: 3969 children under 5 years old living in 6 regions of Uzbekistan were observed.In order to monitor the growth and development of children, anthropometric measurements were carried outin the following periods: the first measurements - at birth, the second and third - at the age of 15 days and1 month, then monthly until the expiration of 12 months, 1 time in 3 months - between 12 and 36 months,every 6 months - between 36 and 60 months and then annually. An immunological study was conducted aswell for children with malnutrition.Results: The percentage of BF in the city of Tashkent was 78.6%, Tashkent region - 66.4%, Khorezm region- 67.3%, Fergana region - 85.7%, Bukhara region - 72.2% and the Republic of Karakalpakstan - 89.0 %Based on those results, it can be stated that in the region where the percentage of IHV was lower (Tashkentand Khorezm regions), the percentage of children with low body weight is greater. By the end of 2012 andthe beginning of 2013, the percentage of children of the first 6 months of life with reduced weight decreasedin all regions. The dynamics of reduced weight by the end of 2012 among children aged 6-12 months waspositiveConclusion: Anthropometric indicators in children of the first 5 years of life, regardless of gender, inalmost all studied regions in terms of body weight and body length/height in most cases were same level. Inchildren under 5 years old, low body weight relative to age prevailed among the forms of impaired physicaldevelopment and nutrition in all regions.

The current view on the body mass and body mass index of children with spine deformity due to cerebral palsy: a systematic review

Background. Currently, several authors believe that one of the main risk factors for the development of postoperative complications after surgical correction of scoliosis due to cerebral palsy (CP) is the body weight, changes in it, and the body mass index (BMI). However, a unified approach for the analysis of these indicators in children with CP remains unclear.&#x0D; Aim. Analysis of the available data in the modern literature on the issues of body mass and BMI in children with spine deformity due to CP.&#x0D; Materials and methods. A systematic search of the literature was conducted in open electronic databases of the scientific literature PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE, eLIBRARY, Russian Index of Scientific Citation (RISC), and bibliography of key articles. The criteria of inclusion were systematic reviews, meta-analyses, multicenter studies, controlled cohort studies, uncontrolled cohort studies of children with spine deformities due to CP, and age of the CP patient 20 years. The criteria of exclusion were clinical cases, observations, materials of conferences, the patients age 20 years, and neuromuscular scoliosis of another etiology.&#x0D; Results. The review primarily included 156 articles with the publication date of 19902020. Among them, 25 publications met the following criteria of inclusion: 3 systematic reviews and meta-analysis, 3 population studies, 1 multicenter study, 11 controlled cohort studies, 6 uncontrolled cohort studies, and 1 case-control study.&#x0D; Conclusion. Body mass and BMI correlate with the functional activities of children with scoliosis due to CP. GMFCS stratified growth graphs of children with CP are the most appropriate reference indicators for assessing body mass and BMI of children with CP. Underweight body and low BMI (below the 10th percentile) are important factors that contribute to high risk of complications after scoliosis surgical correction. In the future, it will be necessary to develop national special centile tables for the optimal assessment of the anthropometric indicators in children with CP.
