Detangling past and modern zinc anthropogenic source contributions in an urbanized coastal river by combining elemental, isotope and speciation approaches

The accumulation of trace metals in the environmental compartments of coastal rivers is a global and complex environmental issue, requiring multiple tools to constrain the various anthropogenic sources and biogeochemical processes affecting the water quality of these environments. The Valao fluvio-estuarine system (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) presents a challenging case of a coastal river contaminated by both modern and historical anthropogenic metal sources, located in the land and in the intra-estuary, continuously mixed by tidal cycles. This study employed a combination of spatial distribution analysis of trace metals including gadolinium (Gd), zinc (Zn) isotopic analyses, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to distinguish between these sources. The concentrations of metals in both dissolved (water samples) and surficial sediment compartments (Suspended Particulate Matter and sediment samples) display an overall enrichment trend from upstream to downstream. Multivariate statistical analysis allows to discriminate geogenic elements derived from watershed geology (Ti, K, and Mg) vs anthropogenic contaminants from urban runoff and domestic sewage discharges (Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Gd); and legacy metal contaminants (Zn and Cd) remobilized from ancient metallurgical wastes and transported upstream in the estuary during tidal cycles. The anthropogenic Gd concentration in the dissolved compartment increases along the watercourse, highlighting continuous ongoing sewage discharge. Zinc solid speciation also indicates that Zn contribution from legacy metallurgy waste is primarily associated with sulfide-Zn and Zn-phyllosilicate in the outlet estuary, while in upstream sediments of fluvio-estuarine system, Zn is found bound to organic matter. Zinc isotope systematically reveals a progressive downstream shift to heavier isotope compositions. Upstream, the relatively pristine site and the urbanized section of the river exhibit a relatively uniform δ66/64Zn value (+0.20 ± 0.07 ‰) in suspended particulate matter (SPM) and surficial sediments. These results indicate that domestic sewage discharges contribute to Zn enrichment in sediments of the Valao fluvio-estuarine system but without modifying its isotope signature in sediments. The sediment of the downstream estuarine section shows a heavier δ66/64Zn value (+0.48 ± 0.08 ‰), indicating the strong influence of the intra-estuarine source identified as the historical metallurgic contamination. An integrated view of the geochemical tracers allows thus inferring that the untreated sewage and legacy metallurgical contamination are the primary sources of anthropogenic Zn contamination. It highlights the progressive mixing along the estuarine gradient under tidal dynamics. The influence of the former source continuously expands from the headland towards the estuary.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in soil and vegetables from major agricultural sites of Ohio and West Virginia

Contamination of soil and crops with heavy metals (HMs) poses a significant environmental challenge in the United States, while the status of metal contamination and associated health risks have been merely studied. Hence, this study aimed to assess metal contamination in major agricultural sites of Ohio and West Virginia, and evaluate the potential health risks associated with consuming metal-contaminated vegetables. Among the agricultural sites studied, Fe was the most predominant contaminant in all the sampling sites, ranging from 28,410 to 67,306 mg/kg of soil, exceeding the permissible limit of the US-EPA. Whereas Cd was the least contaminant, exceeding the permissible limit only in three sampling sites (ME1, ME3, and ME6), ranging from 0.13 to 2.91 mg/kg of soil. Interestingly, range of metals in vegetable samples were within the permissible limits. Principal component and hierarchical cluster analysis indicated the different natural and anthropogenic sources of metals in soil. In noncarcinogenic health risk assessment, the values of EDI, TEDI, THQ and HI levels for all the metals were lower than their daily uptake. However, CR and TCR assessment reveal significant risks associated with Ni exposure for both adults and children, with values of 3.487E-4 and 1.172E-3, and 5.362E-4 and 1.286E-3, respectively, within these agricultural sites. Therefore, regular monitoring of metal concentrations in soil and vegetables, as well as associated health risks, is strongly recommended to prevent potential health hazards in the future.

Metal bioavailability, bioaccumulation, and toxicity assessment through sediment and edible biota from intertidal regions of the Aghanashini Estuary, India

The sediment cores and edible biota from the intertidal regions of the Aghanashini Estuary were studied for the assessment of metal toxicity. The estuarine sediments received natural input of metals through the weathering of Dharwar and peninsular gneisses, and laterites. The sediments were enriched in Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Co and Ni than the upper crustal value. Also, the concentration of Fe, Zn, Cu, Co and Ni was more in the Aghanashini Estuary than other estuaries around the world. The Enrichment Factor (EF) revealed enrichment of Zn, Cu, Co and Ni in sediments, while the Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo) exhibited unpolluted-moderately-strongly polluted class of Fe, Zn, Cu, Co and Ni. The enrichment and pollution of metals in sediments was due to anthropogenic sources (domestic sewage, aquaculture and agricultural discharge) in the estuary. The presence of metals at a high concentration in the residual fraction and at a significant proportion in the bioavailable fractions construed both natural and anthropogenic sources of metal, and their bioavailability in the estuary. The physico-chemical factors (ionic composition, H+ ions, redox potential, and microbial activity) regulated the adsorption and desorption of metals in sediments. The Screening Quick Reference Table (SQUIRT) revealed level of bioavailable Mn and Co higher than the Apparent Effects Threshold (AET) and thus, indicated adverse toxic effects on biota. The Risk Assessment Code (RAC) indicated medium-high-very high risk of Mn, Zn, Co, Cu and Ni to biota. Also, the concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and Ni in biota was in excess of permissible limit which pointed to their toxicity to biota and their consumers. The Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) value > 1, and Hazard Index (HI) value > 10 revealed risk of metal toxicity to humans.

Toxicity of Heavy Metals and Recent Advances in Their Removal: A Review.

Natural and anthropogenic sources of metals in the ecosystem are perpetually increasing; consequently, heavy metal (HM) accumulation has become a major environmental concern. Human exposure to HMs has increased dramatically due to the industrial activities of the 20th century. Mercury, arsenic lead, chrome, and cadmium have been the most prevalent HMs that have caused human toxicity. Poisonings can be acute or chronic following exposure via water, air, or food. The bioaccumulation of these HMs results in a variety of toxic effects on various tissues and organs. Comparing the mechanisms of action reveals that these metals induce toxicity via similar pathways, including the production of reactive oxygen species, the inactivation of enzymes, and oxidative stress. The conventional techniques employed for the elimination of HMs are deemed inadequate when the HM concentration is less than 100 mg/L. In addition, these methods exhibit certain limitations, including the production of secondary pollutants, a high demand for energy and chemicals, and reduced cost-effectiveness. As a result, the employment of microbial bioremediation for the purpose of HM detoxification has emerged as a viable solution, given that microorganisms, including fungi and bacteria, exhibit superior biosorption and bio-accumulation capabilities. This review deals with HM uptake and toxicity mechanisms associated with HMs, and will increase our knowledge on their toxic effects on the body organs, leading to better management of metal poisoning. This review aims to enhance comprehension and offer sources for the judicious selection of microbial remediation technology for the detoxification of HMs. Microbial-based solutions that are sustainable could potentially offer crucial and cost-effective methods for reducing the toxicity of HMs.

First report on occurrence of heavy metals in dried fishes from major fishing villages in Kerala coast, Southwest India

Heavy metal concentrations in dried fishes collected from four fishing villages of Kerala, India, have been assessed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Overall, metal concentrations in dry fishes were in the decreasing order: Zn>Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. Except Pb and Cr, other metals assessed were within permissible limits. Higher accumulation of Pb may be attributed to anthropogenic sources of metals that are persistent in the southwest coast of India, especially the Kerala coast, due to extensive industrialization, urbanization, fishing and port activities. Thirty-six species of dried fishes collected from Azhikode and Munambam zones were found to have more metal accumulations. The metal pollution assessment of dried fishes indicated that Pb and Cr concentrations are higher in the Kerala coast. Further studies must be carried out in more dried fish species and other preserved seafood to ensure that the dried fishes processed from these polluted coastal zones do not cause any harm to the consumers.

Contamination status and associated ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in different wetland sediments from an urbanized estuarine ecosystem

Sediment samples of different wetland types (saltmarsh, mangrove, tidal pool, mudflat and sandflat) from an urbanized estuary were analyzed to evaluate the contamination level and ecological risks of five heavy metals (Pb, Fe, Zn, Ni and Cr). The findings showed that the mean concentration (mg/kg) of heavy metals followed the order of Fe>Zn>Ni>Pb>Cr, while Pb and Fe concentrations exceeded the recommended guidelines. Heavy metals levels were highest in saltmarsh and mudflats. Contamination assessment indices e.g., contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (CD), enrichment factor (EF), and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) revealed that the studied wetlands had low to moderate levels of pollution, meaning these sites receive medium levels of anthropogenic contamination compared with background values. For some of the studied metals, such as Pb, Zn, Fe, and Ni, the EF value was >1 in certain types of wetland, indicating anthropogenic sources, while Cr was <1 indicating natural sources. The pollution load index (PLI) value was determined to be <1, indicating perfection of soil, and was in the following order: mudflat> saltmarsh> tidal pool> mangrove > sandflat. The ecological risk (RI) value was the highest for saltmarsh and the lowest for sandflats. However, the RI value for Cr, Zn, Ni, and Pb was <30 suggesting that these metals pose a low risk in the local ecosystem. Cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), and Pearson's correlation specified that anthropogenic sources of metals.

An insight into source apportionment of metals in superficial sediments from the Tien Hai nature reserve of the Red River delta, Vietnam.

In the present study, concentrations of 23 metallic elements (Al, Fe, K, Mg, Ti, Mn, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Sr, Zr, Mo, Cd, Ba, W, Hg, Pb and U) were determined in superficial sediments from 20 sites within the Tien Hai nature reserve of the Red River delta. An integrated approach including correlation analysis (CA), principal components analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) was combined to identify and quantify the sources of these metals. The results indicated that the correlation analysis was able to identify both allochthonous and authigenous origin of metals while the remaining methods were unable to identify these origins. With the help of CA, the PMF model performed better at the source identification of metals than the PCA. The results of PMF demonstrated that weathering products formed on different parent rocks were the biggest contributor to natural sources of metals in the superficial sediments, while agricultural activities were regarded as the major contributor to anthropogenic sources of metals. These findings could provide a scientific basis for environmental protection authority to prevent and control the sediment metal pollution. Accordingly, application of organic amendments and reduction of inorganic fertilizer should be encouraged to minimize metal accumulation in sediments.

Metals in Lake Sediments as Indicators of Human Activities in Prehistory: Case Study of the Southeastern Baltic, Kamyshovoe Lake

This paper presents the results of geochemical research on the Kamyshovoe Lake sediments (Kaliningrad oblast, Russian Federation). The study of Pb, Ni, Zn, As, Co and Cu concentration and enrichment factors (EF) combined with the results of the lithological, geochronological, magnetic susceptibility and microcharcoal studies revealed possible anthropogenic sources of metals in southeastern Baltic lake sediments from the Neolithic to the Medieval period. Increasing Co EF value and peaks of the Pb EF in Kamyshovoe Lake sediments, starting from ~6000 cal yr BP in the Neolithic, probably show the growing role and usage of metals as dyes and fixatives. Since ~3100 cal yr BP, in the end of the Bronze Age, a simultaneous increase in the content of indicators of metallurgical production Pb, Ni, Zn and As, coinciding with growth of the microcharcoal curve, can show a growing demand for metal objects in the southeastern Baltic region and the input of the local or regional ancient metallurgy into the metal pollution of the lake sediments.

Assessing the risk of toxic metals contamination and phytoremediation potential of mangrove in three coastal sites along the Red Sea

Assessing toxic metals (TMs) contamination and phytoremediation potentiality in coastal mangrove lagoons is needed for applying sustainable management of this ecosystem. Consequently, here we determined the pseudo-total content of TMs in the sediments and mangrove plants (leaves, stems, aerial roots, and fine roots) collected from Al-Shuaiba, Yanbu, and Jeddah lagoons, along the coast of Red Sea. The contamination degree was assessed using different indices and the potentiality of mangroves for TMs phytoremediation was determined. The average total metals content (mg kg−1) in the sediments ranged from 1806 to 9580 for Fe, 65 to 195 for Mn, 3.9 to 25.9 for Cu, 5.5 to 16.4 for Zn, 0.09 to 0.42 for Cd, 8.9 to 20.9 for Cr, 32.8 to 37.9 for Ni, and from 0.69 to 6.7 for Pb. The sediments of Yanbu site contained the highest content of all metals (except for Cu), while Al-Shuaiba sediments contained the lowest values. The contamination factor (CF) showed that the sediments of Yanbu and Jeddah suffer from high and moderate contamination degree of Cd. These sites suffer from moderate grade of Ni contamination. The CF values of Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, and Zn in the three sites were lower than unity, which show low contamination degree. Iron, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were concentrated in the fine roots, while Cd was concentrated in the stems. Mangrove plants at Yanbu site contained significantly higher content of all metals than the grown plants in Jeddah and Al-Shuaiba sites, which can be explained by the high metal content in the sediments and the anthropogenic metal sources such as the petrochemical industries, and the industrial and municipal wastewater discharged into this site. Sediment-to-plant transfer coefficients values were higher than unity, which indicate that the mangrove plants have the potential to accumulate the metals. The results highlight a potential risk at Yanbu and Jeddah sites and may help for applying sustainable trials for phyto-management of these lagoons.

Altitudinal variation of trace elements deposition in forest ecosystems along the NW side of Mt. Amiata (central Italy): Evidence from topsoil, mosses and epiphytic lichens

Mt. Amiata (1738 m) is a volcanic peak in central Italy, completely covered with native oak, chestnut and beech forests. In this Natura 2000 site of Community Importance overlying a large shallow aquifer, climate change and the long-range transport of nutrients and contaminants might have negative impacts on relict plants populations and spring water chemistry. To evaluate the atmospheric deposition of trace elements in Mt. Amiata forest ecosystems, we analyzed the elemental composition of topsoils, epiphytic lichens (Parmelia species) and epigeic moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) between 120 and 1730 m a.s.l. along the NW side of the mountain, which is scarcely affected by natural and anthropogenic sources of metals. The elemental composition of the topsoil is mainly influenced by the different lithologies of the study area (calcareous up to an elevation of 700 m, volcanic up to the summit) and only Pb concentrations increased significantly with the altitude. The total element concentrations in cryptogams, particularly net of the possible contribution from soil particles, showed an enhanced accumulation of Pb, Cd, Hg and Zn in samples collected at altitudes above 1300 m, where beech forest are frequently shrouded in clouds and fog and receive more snow and rain than the lower chestnut and oak woods. Interestingly, the older and metabolically inactive tissues at the base of moss shoots, which are usually overlooked in biomonitoring surveys, appeared to behave as long-term accumulators of Pb. The possible mechanisms involved in the increased bioaccumulation of Mn in cryptogams inhabiting chestnut woods are discussed.

Application of the paleolimnological method to assess metal contaminant distribution (As, Cu, Pb, Zn) in pulp mill stabilization basin sediments, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The paleolimnological method was used to decouple geogenic and anthropogenic metal (loids) contributions in a sediment stabilization basin (Boat Harbour) located in Nova Scotia, Canada. Boat Harbour has been impacted by industrial effluents discharged by a bleached kraft pulp mill (1967 to 2019) and a chlor-alkali plant (1971 to 1992). The former estuary now contains >577,000 m3 of unconsolidated sediment, impacted by inorganic and organic contaminants, including metal[loid]s, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans. Previous studies indicated significant knowledge gaps in our understanding of the spatial, stratigraphic, and temporal variation of sediment contamination. Twenty-five lakebed sediment gravity cores were obtained between 2016 and 2019 to determine spatiotemporal distribution of sediment As, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations which consistently exceeded guidelines for aquatic sediments. Results demonstrate there is no distinct spatial trend in metal concentrations despite point source effluent inputs. High and variable concentrations of Cu and Zn in contaminated sediment likely represent a combination of cation capture by highly organic sediment and influence of pulp mill on lakebed sediment chemistry. Elevated Pb in contaminated sediment is the result of atmospheric deposition from combustion of fossil fuels and bioaccumulation in effluent feedstock. Average sedimentation rate (1 cm every 3 years) is high compared to a nearby freshwater lake and is enhanced by increased nutrient loading and more productive water column conditions associated with effluent introduction. Temporal trends indicate significantly higher concentrations of Zn and Cu in top sediment samples consistent with changes in effluent treatment procedures as well as composition of effluent solids. Comparison of geochemistry of effluent influenced sediment and pre-effluent substate sediment at Boat Harbour to freshwater and marine reference was required to understand the degree to which geogenic and anthropogenic sources of metal(loids) have influenced effluent chemistry. This study demonstrates that undisturbed, time transgressive samples from both impacted sites and reference sites combined with non-destructive, rapid, small sample analytical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence, provide an accurate assessment of sediment metal contaminant distribution, data required to guide remediation and environmental effects monitoring and compliance.

Use of Black Poplar Leaves for the Biomonitoring of Air Pollution in an Urban Agglomeration.

Trees are considered to be an effective tool for metal pollution biomonitoring. In the present study, the concentration of metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Co, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Al) in black poplar leaves (Populus nigra L.), together with the concentration of PM10, PM2.5, PM1, and total suspended particles (TSP), was used for the air pollution biomonitoring in 12 sites from various areas of Cluj-Napoca city, Romania. The concentration of PM10 in the air was high, but their metal content was low. However, Cu, Pb, and Zn were moderately enriched, while Cd was highly enriched in PM10 due to anthropogenic sources. The average metal concentration in leaves decreased in the order Zn>>Fe>Mn>Al>Pb>Ni>Cu>Co>Cd and increased with the increase of PM10 concentration, indicating that poplar leaves are sensitive to air pollution. The principal component analysis indicated that traffic, waste burning, road dust resuspension, and soil contamination are the main anthropogenic sources of metals in poplar leaves. The results indicated that black poplar leaves are a suitable biomonitoring tool for metal pollution, in urban environments.

Assessing the Distribution and Concentration of Heavy Metals in Soils of an Agricultural Frontier in the Brazilian Cerrado

The continuous use of agricultural inputs for grain, fiber, and energy production in the Brazilian savannah can increase heavy metal (HM) concentrations in the soils. In this context, we aimed to determine the natural concentrations and establish the quality reference values (QRVs) of HMs in reference soils of a sedimentary watershed under native vegetation in one of the latest agricultural frontiers of Brazil in order to assess the impact of cultivation on the metal concentrations in cropped soils. Additionally, we studied the spatial variability of HMs and the efficiency of the multivariate analyses to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic sources of metals in the soils. Thirty-two and 30 composite soil samples were collected in areas under agricultural exploration and natural vegetation with minimal anthropic interference (low impact areas), respectively. The QRVs established could be ranked as follows (mg kg−1): Fe (18,700) > V (47.83) > Cr (43.44) > Ba (9.11) > Pb (2.73) > Ni (0.80) > Cu (0.74) > Zn (0.46) > Mo (0.34) > Cd (0.05) > Sb ( Co (< 0.00008). Natural concentrations observed in non-anthropogenic soils are lower than those found in other regions, with the exception of Cr. Also, we found that the mean concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Mo, Mn, Ni, Sb, V, and Zn in agricultural soil were far higher than their background values of the watershed topsoil. Based on our findings, the increased metal concentration in the agricultural soils increases the ecological risk. On the other hand, the mean metal concentrations remain close to the prevention value for soils established by the Brazilian Council for the Environment for agricultural land, which indicates that these areas require monitoring to guarantee foodstuff safety. Our results are useful for public policies not only in the studied area but also worldwide where soils are derived predominantly from sedimentary rocks such as sandstones, siltstones, shales, and limestones.

Appearance of an enigmatic Pb source in South America around 2000 BP: Anthropogenic vs natural origin

Neotropical wetlands in the paramo (a unique alpine-tundra ecosystem) region of South America have the potential to be natural archives for metal pollution by modern and past populations. An organic-rich sediment core from the El Triunfo mire, located in the paramo region, provides a record of natural and anthropogenic metal sources in the Northern Andes during the last four millennia. The Triunfo record is complex, as the mire is located in the Northern Volcanic Zone (NVZ) and receives direct input of volcanic material. Regardless of the volcanic input, calculated metal enrichment factors normalized to Sc show metal enrichment in the Northern Andes around 2000 years ago and again in recent industrial times. A number of samples show a shift to lower Pb isotope ratios indicating the appearance of a new, enigmatic Pb source around 2000 years ago. The topmost layer of the core shows the lowest Pb isotope ratios, reflecting input of modern anthropogenic Pb. In contrast to Pb, Nd isotopes do not show significant variations along the entire core, indicating mostly volcanic material input to the mire. The decoupling between Nd and Pb isotopes indicates that the enigmatic Pb source must be anthropogenic in origin.Based on the dominant atmospheric currents in the region, the El Triunfo mire can receive input from long-distance and local sources. Dispersion simulations validate the possibility of pollutant particle transport from Europe to the northern hemisphere Neotropics. As the first metal enrichment coincides with the Roman Empire times, the El Triunfo Pb isotopes are compared to contemporary peat records from Europe. All records show similar decrease in the Pb isotope ratios due to anthropogenic Pb input. Small Pb isotope differences between a record from Spain and El Triunfo indicate that the enigmatic Pb that appeared around 2000 years ago in the mire is unlikely to have originated from long-distance Roman Empire pollution.Instead, a group of deposits, namely San Lucas, San Martin de Loba, and El Bagre, located in north-central Colombia, show low Pb isotope ratios that can potentially explain the observed Pb signal in the El Triunfo sediments. The deposits are located up wind, along the predominant atmospheric currents in the region. Therefore, it is plausible that mining activities in the area of San-Lucas, San-Martin, and/or El Bagre released Pb in the atmosphere that was transported and deposited in the El Triunfo mire. These deposits are not associated with the known regions of influence of any of the early pre-Hispanic cultures in Colombia and there is no evidence for mining in this region around 2000 years ago. However, given that all other possibilities are unlikely, the appearance of lower Pb isotope ratios in the mire suggests the onset of mining in the region at least 400 years earlier than the available archaeological evidence at present. The El Triunfo mire record can be used as indirect evidence for significant metal exploitation by early pre-Hispanic cultures in the northern Andes as early as 2000 years ago.

Use of Paleoflood Deposits to Determine the Contribution of Anthropogenic Trace Metals to Alluvial Sediments in the Hyperarid Rio Loa Basin, Chile

Toxic trace metals are a common and significant contaminant in riverine ecosystems, and are derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Determining the contributions of metals from these sources has proven difficult, in part, because physical and biogeochemical processes alter the nature (e.g., grain size, mineral composition, organic matter content) of the source materials as they are transported through the drainage network. This study examined the use of paleoflood deposits located along the hyperarid Rio Salado, a tributary to the Rio Loa of northern Chile, to construct local background functions and enrichment factors (LEFs) to differentiate between natural and anthropogenic metal sources. Significant variations in metal content occurred between river reaches and flood deposits of a given reach; these variations were primarily related to changes in sediment source that may reflect differences in El Niño and La Niña precipitation patterns. Three conservative elements (Al, Fe, Co) were examined to construct background functions for seven trace metals. Cobalt yielded the most effective background functions for As, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn; Fe was selected for Cr, and Al for Cu. The resulting LEFs approximated 1, illustrating that paleoflood deposits produced effective background functions, and could be applied to downstream sites contaminated by mining activity.

Assessments of Metals in Coastal Environments: State of Art.

This study is an overview of the assessments of metal contamination in coastal environments for the past five decades. Research articles with evaluations in sediments and biota were quantified and had their content visited for the registry of (1) the source of metals (anthropogenic or natural), (2) assessed country/territory, (3) groups of organisms assessed, (4) trophic transfer evaluation, (5) spatio-temporal variations, and (6) metals evaluated. We found an increase in the number of assessments over the years, mainly from 2014. The majority of the assessments pointed to anthropogenic sources of metals. The United States, the United Kingdom, and China were the most assessed countries. "Mollusks" was the most assessed group of organisms, and only 17% of all sampled studies identified any trophic relation, although there has been an increase since 2013. Spatial variations were more frequent than spatio-temporal and temporal variations alone. Cadmium, copper, zinc, and lead were the top metals evaluated in both sediment and biota. We believe that these are all valuable information for researchers and policy makers interested in the topic.

ANALYSIS OF DYNAMICS AND SOURCES OF MANGANESE, COPPER, NICKEL AND ALUMINUM IONS FOUND IN THE TRANS-BORDER MIUS RIVER DURING THE PERIOD FROM 2003 TO 2017

Aim. Transboundary rivers are complex enough to study which requires analysis of not only the polluting agents themselves but also geographic features and specifics of economic activities. The work is devoted to the study of the dynamics of pollution of the Mius River with ions of manganese, copper, nickel and aluminum, taking into account the peculiarities of the regions through which the river flows and the specifics of the anthropogenic load on the adjacent territories.Material and methods. The article considers some natural and anthropogenic factors that determine the increased content of metal ions in the transboundary river Mius, taking into account the peculiarities of the territory of the river. Based on the monitoring data from 2003 to 2017, the dynamics of river pollution by aluminum, manganese, copper and nickel were presented; monthly averages for the period under review were also given.Results. It is revealed that pollution has an annual periodicity which depends on natural factors and metallurgical industry, characteristic of Donbass. The negative effect of these metals on human health and environment was indicated.Conclusion. There is a connection between changes in concentrations of the metals of concern, which indicates the predominance of the anthropogenic source of metals over natural in the Mius River.

Characteristics of metal contamination in paddy soils from three industrial cities in South Korea

Paddy soil contamination is directly linked to human dietary exposure to toxic chemicals via crop consumption. In Korea, rice paddy fields are often located around industrial complexes, a major anthropogenic source of metals. In this study, rice paddy soils were collected from 50 sites in three industrial cities to investigate the contamination characteristics and ecological risk of metals in the soils. The cities studied and their major industries are as follows: Ulsan (petrochemical, nonferrous, automobile, and shipbuilding), Pohang (iron and steel), and Gwangyang (iron and steel, nonmetallic, and petrochemical). Thirteen metals (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The mean concentration of Cd (1.98mg/kg) exceeded the soil quality guideline of Canada (1.4mg/kg), whereas concentrations of other metals were under the standards of both Korea and Canada. Generally, levels of metal concentrations decreased with increasing distance from industrial complexes. Among the three cities, Pohang showed high concentrations of Zn (142.2mg/kg), and Ulsan and Gwangyang showed high concentrations of Cr (33.9mg/kg) and Ba (126.4mg/kg), respectively. These contamination patterns were influenced by the different major industries of each city, which was clearly demonstrated by the principal component analysis results. Pollution indices suggested that As, Cd, Pb, and Zn were enriched in the paddy soils via anthropogenic activities. Comprehensive potential ecological risk indices were at considerable levels for most sites, especially because of major contributions from As and Cd, which can pose potential ecological threats.

A 20-year record of water chemistry in an alpine setting, Mount Emmons, Colorado, USA

From 1997 to the present, the U.S. Geological Survey and other agencies have been collecting water samples for chemical analyses on Mount Emmons in central Colorado, USA. The geology of Mount Emmons is dominated by Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene sediments of marine to continental origin, with felsic intrusive rocks interrupting the sedimentary block. Extensive sulphide-rich alteration accompanied the intrusive events and forms an alteration halo in the sediments. Weathering of these sulphide minerals has led to numerous springs and seeps with a naturally low pH and high concentrations of metals, especially Fe and Zn. Superimposed on the natural geochemical signature are acid, metal-rich drainages from several mines and drill holes. Thus, streams on Mt. Emmons have a mix of natural and anthropogenic metal sources. Nearly 450 samples compose the database, with numerous sample locations replicated from the late 1990s to the present. Although there does not appear to be any temporal pattern in the data, consistent spatial variations are observed that allow us to characterize the natural and anthropogenic water sources.

Assessment of Metalloid and Metal Contamination in Soils from Hainan, China.

The characterization of the concentrations and sources of metals and metalloids in soils is necessary to establish quality standards on a regional level and to assess the potential threat of metals to food safety and human health. A total of 8713 soil samples throughout Hainan Island, China were collected at a density of one sample per 4 km2, and concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn were analyzed. The geometric mean values of the elements were 2.17, 0.60, 26.5, 9.43, 0.033, 8.74, 22.2, 0.26, and 39.6 mg·· kg−1 for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn, respectively, significantly lower than the background values of Chinese soils with the exception of Se. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that multiple anthropogenic sources regulated the elemental compositions of the Hainan environment. Coal combustion and mining are important anthropogenic sources of metals for Hainan. The geochemical maps of elements in Hainan soils were produced using the Geographic Information System (GIS) method, and several hot-spot areas were identified. The ecological impact of As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Zn pollution to the soils was extremely “low”.
