How to count bird calls? Vocal activity indices may provide different insights into bird abundance and behaviour depending on species traits

Abstract Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) has become an important tool for surveying birds, and there is a growing demand for approaches to obtain abundance and behavioural information from PAM recordings. Changes in bird populations have been assessed by counting recorded calls and calculating the vocal activity rate (VAR, i.e. the number of calls per recording time). However, bird calls could be counted in various ways and depending on species traits, these call counts could give us different insights on bird abundance, vocal behaviour and/or habitat use. Our study had two goals: (1) to present and evaluate two new indices based on call counts, the detection rate (DR, i.e. the number of 1‐min recordings in which the presence of a target vocalization is detected) and the maximum count per minute (MAX, i.e. the maximum number of calls found in a 1‐min recording); and (2) to present a conceptual framework showing how the interpretations of VAR, DR and MAX could depend on the index and on species traits. For three Neotropical bird species with distinct traits, we calculated VAR, DR and MAX based on PAM data from 25 sites in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) that varied in their degree of anthropogenic habitat disturbance. We found moderate to high correlations between the indices and higher temporal variability in VAR compared to DR and MAX. We also found different effect sizes of habitat disturbance on the three species and indices. We suggest that DR might be a more reliable index of relative abundance than VAR for species whose calling behaviour exhibits a high cue rate and that MAX may be suitable for estimating family or flock size in gregarious birds. Our findings show the potential usefulness of developing new indices based on call counts to generate ecological hypotheses and assess changes in bird abundance and behaviour.

Human habitat modification, not apex scavenger decline, drives isotopic niche variation in a carnivore community.

Top carnivores can influence the structure of ecological communities, primarily through competition and predation; however, communities are also influenced by bottom-up forces such as anthropogenic habitat disturbance. Top carnivore declines will likely alter competitive dynamics within and amongst sympatric carnivore species. Increasing intraspecific competition is generally predicted to drive niche expansion and/or individual specialisation, while interspecific competition tends to constrain niches. Using stable isotope analysis of whiskers, we studied the effects of Tasmanian devil Sarcophilus harrisii declines upon the population- and individual-level isotopic niches of Tasmanian devils and sympatric spotted-tailed quolls Dasyurus maculatus subsp. maculatus. We investigated whether time since the onset of devil decline (a proxy for severity of decline) and landscape characteristics affected the isotopic niche breadth and overlap of devil and quoll populations. We quantified individual isotopic niche breadth for a subset of Tasmanian devils and spotted-tailed quolls and assessed whether between-site population niche variation was driven by individual-level specialisation. Tasmanian devils and spotted-tailed quolls demonstrated smaller population-level isotopic niche breadths with increasing human-modified habitat, while time since the onset of devil decline had no effect on population-level niche breadth or interspecific niche overlap. Individual isotopic niche breadths of Tasmanian devils and spotted-tailed quolls were narrower in human-modified landscapes, likely driving population isotopic niche contraction, however, the degree of individuals' specialisation relative to one another remained constant. Our results suggest that across varied landscapes, mammalian carnivore niches can be more sensitive to the bottom-up forces of anthropogenic habitat disturbance than to the top-down effects of top carnivore decline.

Effects of habitat disturbance and elevation on the diversity and endemicity of Herpetofauna in Northeastern Leyte, Philippines

The effect of anthropogenic habitat disturbance and elevational gradient on herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity was investigated in the present study. The habitat disturbance types considered were primary forest, selectively logged primary forest, agroecosystem (coconut plantation), and pasture, with varying elevational distributions (21–1101m asl). The herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity were compared between habitat disturbance types with habitat types (stream and terrestrial), and their relationships with elevation were further explored. A total of 489 herpetofauna belonging to 44 species (22 amphibians and 22 reptiles) were documented. The habitat disturbance significantly lowers the reptile species richness and diversity, and overall herpetofaunal endemicity is low in highly disturbed habitats (pasture). It was found that stream habitats harbor the greatest herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity. Herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity responded differently relative to the elevation, where the former decreased and the latter increased with increasing elevation. Moreover, the highly disturbed habitat (pasture) was strongly associated with widespread and disturbance-tolerant species, while the more pristine habitat (primary forest) was strongly associated with intolerant species. Lastly, this study highlights the need to conserve and protect remaining critical primary habitats especially stream habitats to ensure high herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity in the study area.

Prevalence and Molecular Analysis of Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) Trypanosomes in Tennessee.

Populations of eastern hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis) have been declining for multiple decades because of a variety of stressors associated with anthropogenic habitat disturbance followed by riparian sedimentation. The influence of parasite-associated morbidity and mortality on wild hellbender populations is poorly understood. Research has detected widespread trypanosome infection in hellbenders in Virginia, US, with no other reported detections within the eastern hellbender's extensive range. In our study, trypanosomes mostly closely resembling Trypanosoma cryptobranchi were observed in a blood smear of a hellbender from Tennessee during a population survey. Banked whole blood from this hellbender along with 51 other hellbenders was molecularly tested for the 18s rRNA gene of amphibian trypanosomes using newly designed PCR primers. In total, 3/52 (5.8%) hellbenders were PCR- and sequence-positive for trypanosomes. This is the first report of the partial 18s rRNA sequence from hellbender trypanosomes from North America. Further research into trypanosome epidemiology and hellbender health implications is warranted.

Rapid introgression of non-native alleles following hybridization between a native Anolis lizard species and acryptic invader across an urban landscape.

Invasive species can impact native populations through competition, predation, habitat alteration, and disease transmission, but also genetically through hybridization. Potential outcomes of hybridization span the continuum from extinction to hybrid speciation and can be further complicated by anthropogenic habitat disturbance. Hybridization between the native green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis) and a morphologically similar invader (A. porcatus) in south Florida provides an ideal opportunity to study interspecific admixture across a heterogeneous landscape. We used reduced-representation sequencing to describe introgression in this hybrid system and to test for a relationship between urbanization and non-native ancestry. Our findings indicate that hybridization between green anole lineages was probably a limited, historic event, producing a hybrid population characterized by a diverse continuum of ancestry proportions. Genomic cline analyses revealed rapid introgression and disproportionate representation of non-native alleles at many loci and no evidence for reproductive isolation between parental species. Three loci were associated with urban habitat characteristics; urbanization and non-native ancestry were positively correlated, although this relationship did not remain significant when accounting for spatial nonindependence. Ultimately, our study demonstrates the persistence of non-native genetic material even in the absence of ongoing immigration, indicating that selection favouring non-native alleles can override the demographic limitation of low propagule pressure. We also note that not all outcomes of admixture between native and non-native species should be considered intrinsically negative. Hybridization with ecologically robust invaders can lead to adaptive introgression, which may facilitate the long-term survival of native populations otherwise unable to adapt to anthropogenically mediated global change.

Anthropogenically-induced range expansion as an invasion front in native species: An example in North American flying squirrels

Biological invasions are typically framed as non-native species impacting the populations of native species or ecosystems. However, in a changing world, taxonomically similar native species that were previously parapatric or allopatric may become increasingly sympatric over short time periods (<100 years). In the context of climate change in the Northern Hemisphere, this may have a negative impact on northern species whose ranges are being invaded by southern species. To highlight factors that may influence invasion fronts in native species, I use two species of North American flying squirrels, small-bodied nocturnal arboreal Sciurids, as an example. I discuss what factors may enable or limit the expansion of southern flying squirrels (SFS; Glaucomys fuscus) into northern flying squirrel (NFS; Glaucomys sabrinus) habitat and potential impacts that anthropogenically-induced factors have on range shift dynamics. The range expansion of SFS may impact NFS via resource competition, hybridization, and parasite-mediation. Factors potentially enabling the expansion of SFS into NFS habitat include anthropogenic habitat disturbance and climate change, wherein historical land-use (i.e., logging) alters forest composition increasing habitat suitability for SFS and a warming climate allows SFS to expanded their ranges northward into colder regions. Shifts in forest species composition from historical logging may interact with a warming climate to enable SFS to quickly expand their range. Factors limiting SFS expansion include thermoregulation limitations and absence of potential food and denning resources. The factors influencing the dynamics between these two species may be applicable to the shifting ranges of other taxonomically and functionally similar native species in the context of a rapidly changing world in the Anthropocene.

Beyond species loss: How anthropogenic disturbances drive functional and phylogenetic homogenization of Neotropical dung beetles

Anthropogenic activities drive tropical forest loss and biodiversity decay. However, few studies have addressed how the biodiversity response varies between disturbance-adapted species (i.e., winners) and those highly susceptible to disturbance (i.e., losers), or whether such responses differ between the taxonomic, functional, or phylogenetic dimensions of diversity. Understanding these dynamics can help prevent or buffer biotic homogenization processes. Using a meta-analytical approach with dung beetles as model organisms, we evaluated how anthropogenic habitat disturbances influence the multiple diversity dimensions of winner and loser species relative to conserved forest sites in the Neotropics. Habitats were organized according to a disturbance gradient ranging from second-growth forests, shaded agroforestry, lowly-shaded agroforestry, living fences, and pastures. Our database included 30 studies, from which we calculated nine metrics divided into three alfa diversity aspects: richness, evenness, and divergence. We also evaluated the beta-diversity response to disturbance and forest protection. All dimensions of dung beetle diversity decreased significantly with increasing disturbance levels, with phylogenetic diversity showing the highest losses, whereas evenness metrics increased in second-growth forests and agroforestry systems. Loser dung beetles showed high diversity loss as well as functional and phylogenetic clustering, reflecting a pervasive biotic homogenization in the most severely disturbed habitats, whereas winner species were insensitive to anthropogenic disturbances. Beta diversity increased significantly with disturbance and forest protection. Our study showed that heavy disturbances erode and homogenized all diversity dimensions of loser dung beetles. However, second-growth forests and agroforestry systems mitigated diversity loss and homogenization processes by favoring the coexistence between functional and phylogenetically distant species and maintaining assemblages compositionally similar to those in conserved forests, highlighting their importance for conservation. We encourage natural resource managers to consider protection of disturbed off-reserve forests in management schemes as these are essential for maintaining biodiversity in an increasingly anthropized world.

Habitat split as a driver of disease in amphibians.

Anthropogenic habitat disturbance is fundamentally altering patterns of disease transmission and immunity across the vertebrate tree of life. Most studies linking anthropogenic habitat change and disease focus on habitat loss and fragmentation, but these processes often lead to a third process that is equally important: habitat split. Defined as spatial separation between the multiple classes of natural habitat that many vertebrate species require to complete their life cycles, habitat split has been linked to population declines in vertebrates, e.g. amphibians breeding in lowland aquatic habitats and overwintering in fragments of upland terrestrial vegetation. Here, we link habitat split to enhanced disease risk in amphibians (i) by reviewing the biotic and abiotic forces shaping elements of immunity and (ii) through a spatially oriented field study focused on tropical frogs. We propose a framework to investigate mechanisms by which habitat split influences disease risk in amphibians, focusing on three broad host factors linked to immunity: (i) composition of symbiotic microbial communities, (ii) immunogenetic variation, and (iii) stress hormone levels. Our review highlights the potential for habitat split to contribute to host-associated microbiome dysbiosis, reductions in immunogenetic repertoire, and chronic stress, that often facilitate pathogenic infections and disease in amphibians and other classes of vertebrates. We highlight that targeted habitat-restoration strategies aiming to connect multiple classes of natural habitats (e.g. terrestrial-freshwater, terrestrial-marine, marine-freshwater) could enhance priming of the vertebrate immune system through repeated low-load exposure to enzootic pathogens and reduced stress-induced immunosuppression.

Ecosystem type might mask the effect of ecosystem recovery on parasitoids’ biodiversity quality

Ecological restoration is considered a tool for repairing anthropogenic habitat disturbances, but the biodiversity recovering needs to be monitored. Here we evaluate a comprehensive approach for biodiversity: Biodiversity Quality, which comprises a set of 10 indices representing different components of diversity and providing an holistic overview. This approach was tested in a hyper-diverse insect group, the Ichneumonidae family in three different levels of conservation, i.e., a degraded area, a well-conserved area and an area undergoing ecological restoration for 10–15 years. Comparisons were done in three different ecosystems from southern Ecuador, i.e., Andean forest, rainforest and dry forest. We also compared the species assemblages through beta diversity indices. A total of 36 Townes style white Malaise traps were installed at three different conservation levels in 12 natural reserves, and all Ichneumonid insects collected were sorted, mounted and identified to operational taxonomic units (OTUs). A total of 2929 individuals in 708 OTUs were collected, which represented 1264.78 g of biomass. No differences were found between conservation levels, but all indices showed significant differences when comparing ecosystem types. Andean forests had significantly more richness, diversity, population and biomass than the other ecosystems, and less dominance and rarity than dry forests. Species composition of Ichneumonidae assemblages were also different between ecosystems and not so between conservation levels. When comparing in every ecosystem separately, degraded areas in dry forest had significantly more density and biomass than conserved areas. This represents a first attempt of applying this comprehensive approach in such a species-rich family.

Environmental and Anthropogenic Factors Shape the Skin Bacterial Communities of a Semi-Arid Amphibian Species

The amphibian skin microbiome is important in maintaining host health, but is vulnerable to perturbation from changes in biotic and abiotic conditions. Anthropogenic habitat disturbance and emerging infectious diseases are both potential disrupters of the skin microbiome, in addition to being major drivers of amphibian decline globally. We investigated how host environment (hydrology, habitat disturbance), pathogen presence, and host biology (life stage) impact the skin microbiome of wild Dhofar toads (Duttaphrynus dhufarensis) in Oman. We detected ranavirus (but not Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) across all sampling sites, constituting the first report of this pathogen in Oman, with reduced prevalence in disturbed sites. We show that skin microbiome beta diversity is driven by host life stage, water source, and habitat disturbance, but not ranavirus infection. Finally, although trends in bacterial diversity and differential abundance were evident in disturbed versus undisturbed sites, bacterial co-occurrence patterns determined through network analyses revealed high site specificity. Our results therefore provide support for amphibian skin microbiome diversity and taxa abundance being associated with habitat disturbance, with bacterial co-occurrence (and likely broader aspects of microbial community ecology) being largely site specific.

Effect of human disturbance on the group size and population structure of geladas (Theropithecus gelada) in and surrounding area of Borena Sayint National Park, Ethiopia

Little is known about the effect of anthropogenic habitat disturbances on the group size and population structure of geladas (Theropithecus gelada), even though such data are crucial to implementing successful conservation actions and management plans. In this study, we compared the group size and composition of gelada populations inhabiting protected (Borena Sayint National Park) and unprotected habitats that experience different levels of human disturbances in Wollo, Ethiopia. We collected gelada population data using the total count method to determine the population number and to examine the influence of anthropogenic disturbances on the group sizes and social systems (band, all-male unit (AMU), or one-male unit (OMU)) of geladas. Overall, we counted a total of 2786 individuals of geladas belonging to 59 groups in both protected and unprotected habitats. The mean band size of geladas in the protected habitat was 81.6 individuals, while it was 40.1 in the unprotected habitat. In the protected habitat, the mean number of adult males per group (including both bands and OMUs) was 5.7, while it was 3.1 in the unprotected habitat. In the protected site, the mean number of immatures per group was 21.5, whereas it was 10.5 in the unprotected habitat. Likewise, the mean number of adult females per group in the protected habitat was nearly twice that of the unprotected site. However, the proportion numbers of age/sex compositions were not significantly different between the two habitats. In the protected habitat, the overall average adult male to adult female sex ratio was 1:5.1, while it was 1:4.8 in the unprotected area. The band size of geladas in the protected habitat was significantly and positively correlated with the altitude. Our study shows that geladas can withstand anthropogenically disturbed habitats by adjusting their band sizes to the optimal level. Such flexibility in group size is an adaptation strategy of geladas for maximizing foraging efficiency in response to broad grassland habitat losses and degradations. Although geladas are flexible in their population ecology, it is crucial to implement appropriate conservation measures to ensure their long-term persistence in the human-modified landscapes of the Ethiopian Highlands.

Effect of Habitat Disturbance on the Composition of Soil Nematode Functional Groups Associated with a Tropical Herb: Heliconia collinsiana

Habitat loss affects the nature of biotic interactions in all ecosystems and at all levels of the food web. Nevertheless, little attention has been given to soil nematodes in tropical habitats despite their important role in ecosystem functioning worldwide. Here, we analyzed the influence of anthropogenic habitat disturbance on the absolute and relative density and composition (i.e., trophic guilds) of soil nematode communities associated with the rhizosphere of the tropical herb Heliconia collinsiana in continuous mature forests and human-induced secondary forests. We compared nematode densities based on the following feeding guilds: bacterivores, fungivores, herbivores and predators. Thereafter, we classified herbivorous nematodes into genera and described soil properties in both habitat types including pH, electrical conductivity, and organic matter content. Herbivores were significantly the most abundant feeding guild for both habitats represented by Criconemella spp., Helicotylenchus spp., and Meloidogyne spp., which showed no significant differences in density between habitats. Relative but not absolute nematode density differed between habitats, with fungivore nematodes being significantly lower in secondary forests. No significant differences in soil properties were detected. Overall, our results suggest that forest disturbance affects the nematode community associated with the rhizosphere of H. collinsiana which may affect forest succession and the dynamics of the soil biota. Our study contributes to the understanding of biotic interactions in conserved and disturbed tropical habitats.

THE STATUS OF BUDDLEJA SESSILIFLORA (SCROPHULARIACEAE) IN ARIZONA: REVISITING A RARE CLIMATE RELICT AT THE NORTHERN EDGE OF ITS RANGE

Rio Grande Butterfly Bush, Buddleja sessiliflora Kunth (Scrophulariaceae), reaches its northernmost distribution in southeast Arizona, and herbarium records document seven historical localities from Pima and Santa Cruz counties. Between 2014–2020, we visited six of the documented historical localities, but could not access the seventh location reported from the Tohono O'odham Nation. We found one of these historical locations is no longer extant. Two recently discovered new sites were also visited. We verified a total of 30 plants, in nine populations, from seven distinct localities during this research, which included the two previously unknown sites. Five of the seven localities were restricted to 6–15 m diameter areas and contained between one and seven plants, while the other two localities each included two disjunct 5 m diameter clusters of plants. We only found two small plants, which are likely seedlings or propagules. It is unclear why these plants rarely reproduce in situ, either sexually or vegetatively. These isolated riparian populations experience environmental stress, including hotter drought, diminishing water resources, anthropogenic habitat disturbance, and invasive plant species. This study resulted in an Arizona state designation for B. sessiliflora of ‘S1: critically imperiled.’ Buddleja sessiliflora may be one of the rarest plants in southern Arizona, and these peripheral populations face an increased extirpation risk.

Abundance changes of neophytes and native species indicate a thermophilisation and eutrophisation of the Swiss flora during the 20th century

During the 20th century human activities drastically altered the natural environment at global and local scales by habitat destruction, urbanisation, intensive agriculture, and climate warming. This anthropogenic pressure has modified species distributions and abundances, and led to the increased spread of neophytes. However, the determination of the magnitude, direction, and drivers of changes remains challenging as comparable historic data is often lacking. Here, we analysed the floristic shifts during the 20th century based on a historic (1900–1930) and current (2000–2017) floristic survey of the canton of Zurich (Switzerland; 1729 km2) in combination with Landolt ecological indicator values (EIVs) for vascular plants. We used two complementary approaches to quantify the floristic shifts using EIVs for temperature, moisture, continentality, nutrients, soil pH and available light. 1) Regarding 244 map tiles with each a 3 × 3 km2 area, we compared the average EIVs for neophytes (i.e., novel species arriving of expanding in the study area) and native species (i.e., species present in Switzerland for centuries). 2) Based on standardized species abundances in the historic and the current flora, we analysed the directed changes by comparing the species’ EIVs of different frequency classes for both the historic and current floristic surveys. Our results showed, that neophyte species arriving or spreading in the study area indicate both a thermophilisation and an eutrophisation. The observed shift in average EIVs for temperature corresponded to about 2 °C, which is in line with the calculated difference in niche centroids for neophytes and native species based on their global distribution (1.78 °C). The indicated thermophilisation and eutrophisation relate to the decrease in abundances of cold-adapted species and species of nutrient poor environments as well as the increase of warm-adapted and nitrophilous/ruderal species. Directed changes in the flora of the study area are likely to be driven by both climatic changes and land-use changes. Increases in trade activity, anthropogenic habitat disturbances and rising temperatures facilitate the establishment and spread of neophytes from warmer and drier regions. In parallel, wetland area and wetland species strongly decreased as well as species thriving on nutrient-poor sites due to intensified agriculture and nitrogen deposition.

Global dynamics of a diffusive competition model with habitat degradation.

In this paper, we propose a diffusive competition model with habitat degradation and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain that is partitioned into the healthy region (undisturbed habitat) and the degraded region (due to anthropogenic habitat disturbance). Species follow the Lotka-Volterra competition in the healthy region while in the degraded region species experience only exponential decay (not necessarily at the same rate). This setup is novel in that it requires no positivity assumption on the environmental heterogeneity, either absolute or on average, which would be far too restrictive for the study of the effects of habitat degradation. We rigorously show competitive exclusion and coexistence via global stability analysis. A remarkable finding is that the quality heterogeneity of landscapes can lead to the competitive exclusion of the slower species by the faster species. This result is robust as long as the degraded region has positive area, and moreover is at odds with classical results predicting the deterministic extinction of the stronger species. On the other hand, if the degraded region has intermediate negative effect on the faster competitor, species can coexist. Differing from comparable existing results, coexistence does not rely on a limit as the diffusion coefficients tend to zero or infinity. Together, these results imply that coexistence is always a possibility under this basic, yet general, configuration, providing insights into the varying impacts found through empirical study of habitat loss and fragmentation on species.

Turtle Nest-Site Choice, Anthropogenic Challenges, and Evolutionary Potential for Adaptation

Oviparous animals, such as turtles, lay eggs whose success or demise depends on environmental conditions that influence offspring phenotype (morphology, physiology, and in many reptiles, also sex determination), growth, and survival, while in the nest and post-hatching. Consequently, because turtles display little parental care, maternal provisioning of the eggs and female nesting behavior are under strong selection. But the consequences of when and where nests are laid are affected by anthropogenic habitat disturbances that alter suitable nesting areas, expose eggs to contaminants in the wild, and modify the thermal and hydric environment experienced by developing embryos, thus impacting hatchling survival and the sexual fate of taxa with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and genotypic sex determination (GSD). Indeed, global and local environmental change influences air, water, and soil temperature and moisture, which impact basking behavior, egg development, and conditions within the nest, potentially rendering current nesting strategies maladaptive as offspring mortality increases and TSD sex ratios become drastically skewed. Endocrine disruptors can sex reverse TSD and GSD embryos alike. Adapting to these challenges depends on genetic variation, and little to no heritability has been detected for nest-site behavior. However, modest heritability in threshold temperature (above and below which females or males develop in TSD taxa, respectively) exists in the wild, as well as interpopulation differences in the reaction norm of sex ratio to temperature, and potentially also in the expression of gene regulators of sexual development. If this variation reflects additive genetic components, some adaptation might be expected, provided that the pace of environmental change does not exceed the rate of evolution. Research remains urgently needed to fill current gaps in our understanding of the ecology and evolution of nest-site choice and its adaptive potential, integrating across multiple levels of organization.

The gut microbiome as an indicator of habitat disturbance in a Critically Endangered lemur

BackgroundHabitat disturbance affects the biology and health of animals globally. Understanding the factors that contribute to the differential responses of animals to habitat disturbance is critical for conservation. The gut microbiota represents a potential pathway through which host responses to habitat disturbance might be mediated. However, a lack of quantitative environmental data in many gut microbiome (GM) studies of wild animals limits our ability to pinpoint mechanisms through which habitat disturbance affects the GM. Here, we examine the impact of anthropogenic habitat disturbance on the diet and GM of the Critically Endangered black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata editorum). We collected fecal samples and behavioral data from Varecia occupying habitats qualitatively categorized as primary forest, moderately disturbed forest, and heavily disturbed forest.ResultsVarecia diet and GM composition differed substantially across sites. Dietary richness predicted GM richness across sites, and overall GM composition was strongly correlated to diet composition. Additionally, the consumption of three specific food items positively correlated to the relative abundances of five microbial strains and one microbial genus across sites. However, diet did not explain all of the GM variation in our dataset, and differences in the GM were detected that were not correlated with diet, as measured.ConclusionsOur data suggest that diet is an important influence on the Varecia GM across habitats and thus could be leveraged in novel conservation efforts in the future. However, other factors such as contact with humans should also be accounted for. Overall, we demonstrate that quantitative data describing host habitats must be paired with GM data to better target the specific mechanisms through which environmental change affects the GM.

Habitat Disturbance Linked with Host Microbiome Dispersion and Bd Dynamics in Temperate Amphibians.

Anthropogenic habitat disturbances can dramatically alter ecological community interactions, including host-pathogen dynamics. Recent work has highlighted the potential for habitat disturbances to alter host-associated microbial communities, but the associations between anthropogenic disturbance, host microbiomes, and pathogens are unresolved. Amphibian skin microbial communities are particularly responsive to factors like temperature, physiochemistry, pathogen infection, and environmental microbial reservoirs. Through a field survey on wild populations of Acris crepitans (Hylidae) and Lithobates catesbeianus (Ranidae), we assessed the effects of habitat disturbance and connectivity on environmental bacterial reservoirs, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) infection, and skin microbiome composition. We found higher measures of microbiome dispersion (a measure of community variability) in A. crepitans from more disturbed ponds, supporting the hypothesis that disturbance increases stochasticity in biological communities. We also found that habitat disturbance limited microbiome similarity between locations for both species, suggesting greater isolation of bacterial assemblages in more disturbed areas. Higher disturbance was associated with lower Bd prevalence for A. crepitans, which could signify suboptimal microclimates for Bd in disturbed habitats. Combined, our findings show that reduced microbiome stability stemming from habitat disturbance could compromise population health, even in the absence of pathogenic infection.

Climate and socio‐economic factors explain differences between observed and expected naturalization patterns of European plants around the world

AbstractAimThe number of naturalized (i.e. established) alien species has increased rapidly over recent centuries. Given the differences in environmental tolerances among species, little is known about what factors determine the extent to which the observed size of the naturalized range of a species and hence the extent to which the observed richness of naturalized species of a region approach their full potential. Here, we asked which region‐ and species‐specific characteristics explain differences between observed and expected naturalizations.LocationGlobal.Time periodPresent.Major taxa studiedVascular plants.MethodsWe determined the observed naturalized distribution outside Europe for 1,485 species endemic to Europe using the Global Naturalized Alien Flora (GloNAF) database and their expected distributions outside Europe using species distribution models. First, we investigated which of seven socio‐economic factors related to introduction pathways, anthropogenic pressures and inventory effort best explained the differences between observed and expected naturalized European floras. Second, we examined whether distributional features, economic use and functional traits explain the extent to which species have filled their expected ranges outside Europe.ResultsIn terms of suitable area, more than 95% of expected naturalizations of European plants were not yet observed. Species were naturalized in only 4.2% of their suitable regions outside of Europe (range filling) and in 0.4% of their unsuitable regions (range expansion). Anthropogenic habitat disturbance primarily explained the difference between observed and expected naturalized European floras, as did the number of treaties relevant to invasive species. Species of ornamental and economic value and with large specific leaf area performed better at filling and expanding beyond their expected range.Main conclusionsThe naturalization of alien plant species is explained by climate matching but also by the regional level of human development, the introduction pressure associated with the ornamental and economic values of the species and their adaptation to disturbed environments.
