Comparative physiological and transcriptomic analyses provide induction resistance mechanisms of Bacillus tequilensis against Colletotrichum fructicola in Camellia oleifera

Bacillus tequilensis DZY 6715 was isolated from healthy leaves in Camellia oleifera, and the strain DZY 6715 significantly inhibited anthracnose disease resulting from Colletotrichum fructicola in C. oleifera, besides, its associated mechanism of disease resistance was explored. B. tequilensis DZY 6715 treatment controlled mycelial growth of C. fructicola in C. oleifera, and significantly decreased C. oleifera anthracnose incidence and disease index compared with the control group. B. tequilensis DZY 6715 has strong biofilm forming ability, and also secretes extracellular β-1, 3-glucanase and chitinase, which could cause cell membranes damage and increased cellular compound leakage. C.oleifera treated with DZY 6715 also effectively enhanced enzyme activities and stimulated the synthesis the substances related to phenylpropane metabolism and reactive oxygen metabolism. Moreover, transcript profiling analysis revealed more differentially expressed genes related to phenylpropanoid pathway metabolism and antioxidant system inducing by DZY 6715 compared with the control in C. oleifera. Thus, it can be concluded that B. tequilensis DZY 6715 is a suitable bio-control agent to control anthracnose disease in C. oleifera.

Antagonistic potential of actinomycete strains against Colletotrichum sp. causes anthracnose disease in durian

The research was carried out at Can Tho University with the aim of investigating the ability of actinomycetes isolates to antagonise Colletotrichum sp. fungus causing anthracnose disease in durian. The results showed that among the 28 actinomycete strains evaluated, 6 actinomycetes including BT19, BL10, TG19, BT16, ĐT15, and VL9 had stronger antagonism with a radius of inhibition zone reaches 12.4, 9.4, 11.1, 9.8, 9.7, and 9.2 mm, respectively and antagonistic efficacy of 63.22, 58.62, 55.86, 53.56, 52.64, and 53.79%, respectively at 7 days after co-inoculation. The ability to degrade β-glucan of 6 strains BT19, BL10, TG19, BT16, DT15, and VL9 performed under laboratory conditions showed that the BT19 isolate had the highest β-glucanolytic activity with the β-glucan lyse halo radius of 8.53 mm and secreted β-glucanase content reached 0.678 IU/ml at 14 days after testing. The results of this study will be the basis for further research to contribute to finding effective methods to control anthracnose disease in durian.

Exploiting phenotypic and genotypic diversity against Colletotrichum truncatum in chilli hybrids developed using resistant breeding lines

AbstractIn an effort to control anthracnose disease, one of the major problems that has been faced by farmers, 14 chilli hybrids and their parents were screened phenotypically using the fruit inoculation method under laboratory conditions. Genotypic screening of 14 chilli hybrids and their parents was done by the identified polymorphic markers, HpmsE 051 and HpmsE 082. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic data, chilli hybrids, H1, H2, H3, H4, H6, H7, H8, H9, H11 and H12 were identified as resistant chilli hybrids against anthracnose disease caused by the C. truncatum. Molecular markers, HpmsE 051 and HpmsE 082 could be utilized as polymorphic markers to isolate resistant genotypes against C. truncatum.

Conidia deposition in liquid culture of Trichoderma using starch flour and antifungal activity of the precipitate against Colletotrichum capsici

Colletotrichum capsici is a highly destructive anthracnose pathogen, causing significant losses in chili plants. Trichoderma, an antagonistic fungus commonly mass-cultured, is employed to control anthracnose disease. This research aims to evaluate the efficacy of adding starch for conidia deposition in liquid Trichoderma cultures and to assess the antifungal activity of the sediment on the colony growth of C. capsici. The study utilized a factorial experiment with three types of liquid culture medium (5% tannin, 5% yeast, and 5% yeast + 5% tannin), three types of starch (rice, corn, and tapioca), and three concentrations (5%, 10%, and 20%), each with five repetitions and one control. Liquid culture, composed of a mixture of 2% sucrose with either yeast or tannin from the gambir plant (Uncaria gambir), was inoculated with a blend of three Trichoderma isolates and incubated for 14 days at 150 rpm. Starch was added according to the treatment and then centrifuged at 3000 rpm. The results indicated a significant 8.9–17.8 times log10 increase in conidia concentration after the settling treatment. The type of liquid culture medium and starch concentration significantly influenced the conidia concentration after deposition. The yeast liquid culture exhibited the highest conidia density at 4.96×1010/mL. The starch concentration that produced the highest conidia density after settling was 20%, yielding 4.51×1010/mL. The type of starch did not significantly influence the conidia concentration in the sediment. The methanol extract of sedimented liquid culture, after the addition of 5-20% rice flour from tannin medium, exhibited antifungal activity against C. capsici.

Test of the Effectiveness of Senduduk Leaf Extract Concentration (Melastoma Malabrhaticum L.) Against Anthracnose Disease in Red Chili Commodities (Capsicum annuum L.)

The disease that causes low chili productivity in Indonesia is anthracnose, anthracnose disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum spp. Efforts to control anthracnose disease are currently still being made using many synthetic pesticides. The use of synthetic pesticides can have a negative impact on the environment. Vegetable functions can be used as another effort to control anthracnose. Plant extracts can be used in anthracnose disease control are Senduduk leaf extracts. This study aims to obtain the concentration of Senduduk plant leaf extract (Melastoma malabathricum L) in inhibiting the growth of Colletotrichum spp. Research is carried out in the field and laboratory. The design used in this research was a complete randomized design (RAL) with 5 treatments of Senduduk leaf extract, namely K0 = 0%, K1 = 3%, K2 = 6%, K3 = 9%, and K4 = 12%. With 3 repetitions. The results showed that Senduduk leaf extract treatment with a concentration of 12% effective could inhibit the growth of Colletotrichum capsici fungus.

ASSESSMENT OF PLANTS’ LEAF EXTRACTS FOR ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY AGAINST THE FUNGUS COLLETOTRICHUM ACUTATUM IN CHILI (CAPSICUM ANNUUM L.)

In horticultural crops, including chili, the wide use of synthetic fungicides has manifested to control anthracnose disease; however, these chemicals have some side effects to deal with. In reducing the dependency on synthetic fungicides, other alternatives and means need searching to prevent pathogenic fungi. Therefore, the presented study sought to examine plant extracts with the potential to inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi Colletotrichum acutatum, the causal organism of anthracnose disease in chili. This study collected 20 potential plant species for the investigation. The leaf extraction used the maceration method in methanol and n-hexane. The contents of chemical compounds sustained the GC-MS analysis. All the leaf extracts tested for their bioactivity underwent the colony method and diffusion well. The results revealed that out of 20 types of plants, six plant species were capable of inhibiting the growth of C. acutatum fungi, including Piper nigrum, Piper ornatum, Piper retrofractum, Ficus septica, Samanea saman, and Tithonia diversifolia. The leaf extract of F. septica has the highest inhibition rate (81.11%) for the growth of C. acutatum compared with other plant leaf extracts. The GC-MS analysis of the F. septica leaf extract showed the presence of 15 types of metabolite constituents, with nine having antimicrobial activities.

The Hidden Truths of Fungal Virulence and Adaptation on Hosts: Unraveling the Conditional Dispensability of Minichromosomes in the Hemibiotrophic Colletotrichum Pathogens.

Colletotrichum spp. are ascomycete fungi and cause anthracnose disease in numerous crops of economic significance. The genomes of these fungi are distributed among ten core chromosomes and two to three minichromosomes. While the core chromosomes regulate fungal growth, development and virulence, the extent to which the minichromosomes are involved in these processes is still uncertain. Here, we discuss the minichromosomes of three hemibiotrophic Colletotrichum pathogens, i.e., C. graminicola, C. higginsianum and C. lentis. These minichromosomes are typically less than one megabase in length, characterized by containing higher repetitive DNA elements, lower GC content, higher frequency of repeat-induced point mutations (RIPMs) and sparse gene distribution. Molecular genetics and functional analyses have revealed that these pathogens harbor one conditionally dispensable minichromosome, which is dispensable for fungal growth and development but indispensable for fungal virulence on hosts. They appear to be strain-specific innovations and are highly compartmentalized into AT-rich and GC-rich blocks, resulting from RIPMs, which may help protect the conditionally dispensable minichromosomes from erosion of already scarce genes, thereby helping the Colletotrichum pathogens maintain adaptability on hosts. Overall, understanding the mechanisms underlying the conditional dispensability of these minichromosomes could lead to new strategies for controlling anthracnose disease in crops.

Phenyllactic acid treatment for controlling anthracnose disease (Colletotrichum musae) and preserving banana fruit quality during storage

Banana is considered climacteric fruit that undergoes rapid post-harvest senescence, making it highly susceptible to diseases such as anthracnose, leading to a decline in quality. To address this issue, researchers investigated the effects of phenyllactic acid (PLA), a novel natural bio-preservative with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, on banana fruit after harvesting. The study revealed that PLA treatment resulted in improved attributes of postharvest quality, including reduced changes in peel color, soluble solids concentration, and firmness. Additionally, respiratory rate, ethylene release, and disease index were significantly decreased, indicating that the fruit's physiological processes were better regulated. Furthermore, PLA treatment enhanced the activity of disease-resistant enzymes β-1,3-glucanase and chitinase, and upregulated the expression of pathogenesis-related genes. Importantly, PLA demonstrated its efficacy in suppressing the growth of anthracnose-causing fungi (Colletotrichum musae) and reducing disease severity on harvested fruit. In conclusion, PLA treatment shows promise as a new approach to maintain the freshness and quality of harvested banana fruit by reducing disease development, regulating physiological processes, and enhancing disease resistance mechanisms.

Antifungal efficacy of biogenic waste derived colloidal/nanobiochar against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. usually resulting in significant postharvest losses in the banana production chain. This study investigated the inhibitory effect of corn cob colloidal/nanobiochar (CCN) and Gliricidia sepium wood colloidal/nanobiochar (GCN) on the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex. The CCN and GCN materials were synthesized and thoroughly characterized using various techniques, including UV–Vis and Fluorescence spectroscopy. Then after the fungal growth was examined on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) media supplemented with different CCN and GCN concentrations of 0.4 – 20 g/L and CCN and GCN with zeolite at various weight percentages of 10% to 50% w/w. Results from the characterization revealed that CCN exhibited a strong UV absorbance peak value of 0.630 at 203 nm, while GCN had a value of 0.305 at 204 nm. In terms of fluorescence emission, CCN displayed a strong peak intensity of 16,371 at 412 nm, whereas GCN exhibited a strong peak intensity of 32,691 at 411 nm. Both CCN and GCN, at concentrations ranging from 1 to 8 and 0.4 – 20 g/L, respectively, displayed notable reductions in mycelial densities and inhibited fungal growth compared to the control. Zeolite incorporation further enhanced the antifungal effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate the promising potential of colloidal/nanobiochar in effectively controlling anthracnose disease. The synthesized CCN and GCN demonstrate promising antifungal potential against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex, offering the potential for the development of novel and effective antifungal strategies for controlling anthracnose disease in Musa spp.

Identification and characterization of Brevibacillus halotolerans B-4359: a potential antagonistic bacterium against red pepper anthracnose in Korea.

Our study aimed to identify potential biocontrol agents (BCAs) against major phytopathogens under in vitro conditions by screening the Freshwater Bioresources Culture Collection (FBCC), Korea. Of the identified 856 strains, only 65 exhibited antagonistic activity, among which only one representative isolation, Brevibacillus halotolerans B-4359 was selected based on its in vitro antagonistic activity and enzyme production. Cell-free culture filtrate (CF) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of B-4359 were shown to be effective against the mycelial growth of Colletotrichum acutatum. Notably, B-4359 was found to promote spore germination in C. acutatum instead of exhibiting a suppressive effect when the bacterial suspension was mixed with the spore suspension of C. acutatum. However, B-4359 showed an excellent biological control effect on the anthracnose of red pepper fruits. Compared to other treatments and untreated control, B-4359 played a more effective role in controlling anthracnose disease under field conditions. The strain was identified as B. halotolerans using BIOLOG and 16S rDNA sequencing analyses. The genetic mechanism underlying the biocontrol traits of B-4359 was characterized using the whole-genome sequence of B-4359, which was closely compared with related strains. The whole-genome sequence of B-4359 consisted of 5,761,776 bp with a GC content of 41.0%, including 5,118 coding sequences, 117 tRNA, and 36 rRNA genes. The genomic analysis identified 23 putative secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters. Our results provide a deep understanding of B-4359 as an effective biocontrol agent against red pepper anthracnose for sustainable agriculture.

Early detection and control of anthracnose disease in cashew leaves to improve crop yield using image processing and machine learning techniques

Agriculture is one of the primary pillars powering India's economy. It is alarming to note that India's agriculture rate is declining steeply. Climate change, environmental pollution, and soil erosion are well-known factors affecting crop productivity. The increasing prevalence of plant diseases is also a significant factor affecting agriculture. Early disease detection and mitigation actions based on identified conditions in the plants are critical in increasing crop productivity. This study considers a machine learning model for detecting disease in cashew leaves. This work concentrates on Anthracnose disease, which leads to severe yield loss when it affects the cashew plant. In this regard, cashew leaves are collected and used to train various machine learning classifiers to identify and classify the disease. This work focuses on the segmentation and classification of leaves using multiple Machine Learning models. Basic segmentation approaches like Global Threshold, Adaptive Gaussian, Adaptive Mean, Otsu, Canny, Sobel, and K-Means, and Machine Learning models like Random Forest, Decision Tree, KNN, Logistic Regression, Gaussian Naive Bayes Classifiers are employed. The final classification employs a Hard and Soft voting classifier and the Decision Tree, KNN, Logistic Regression, and Gaussian Naive Bayes classifiers. Finally, we observe that K-Means segmentation with Random Forest outperforms other classifiers. The accuracy obtained from the Random Forest classifier is 96.7% for the CCDDB dataset, and the accuracy obtained from the Random Forest classifier is 99.7% for the PDDB dataset.

Efficacy of stingless bee (Heterotrigona itama) propolis aqueous extract in controlling anthracnose and maintaining postharvest quality of chilli (Capsicum annuum) during storage

Anthracnose, mainly caused by Colletotrichum spp., is one of the fungal diseases resulting in major economic losses affecting chilli production worldwide. Propolis extract from honeybee has been discovered for its antifungal properties, which can potentially reduce postharvest decay. Therefore, the present work investigated the efficiency of aqueous extract of stingless bee (Heterotrigona itama) propolis in controlling postharvest anthracnose and maintaining quality of chilli. Colletotrichum capsici was isolated and characterised from infected chilli. Stingless bee propolis extract at different concentrations of 1, 2, 5, and 10% were assessed in vitro to inhibit the mycelial growth of C. capsici. The best concentration in inhibiting C. capsici growth was thereafter selected for in vivo experiments. All tested concentrations of stingless bee propolis extract inhibited the mycelial growth of C. capsici the highest being 35% inhibition from the treatment of 10% propolis extract. The extract at this concentration was therefore tested in vivo, and showed effectiveness in reducing the percentage of disease severity in chilli. The propolis extract was also efficient in reducing weight loss, retaining firmness, pH, total soluble solid, and colour (a* value) throughout 21-day storage at 10°C. The present work demonstrated that aqueous extract of stingless bee propolis could have the potential to control anthracnose disease and delay deterioration, thus maintaining the postharvest quality parameters of chilli. This natural product from stingless bee has the prospect to be an alternative to synthetic fungicide.

Screening of indigenous actinobacteria as biological control agents of Colletotrichum capsici and increasing chili production

BackgroundAnthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum capsici is a major disease in chili plants that is difficult to control. Actinobacteria have potential biological control agents for C. capsici because of their antifungal properties and dominant presence in soil. The study aimed to obtain actinobacteria isolates that have the potential to control anthracnose in planta and increase the growth and production of chili plants. The study consisted of three stages: isolation, selection, and characterization of the best actinobacteria isolates. A total of 20 isolates of indigenous actinobacteria were isolated, and 16 isolates were successfully selected based on the results of the biosafety test.ResultsThe in planta test showed that eight isolates could control anthracnose with 100% effectiveness. Of the eight isolates, as many as five players increased the production of chili plants by 169.51–218.53 g. Actinobacterial isolates that have the potential to control anthracnose disease in planta and increase the growth and production of chili plants are ARAI 3221, ARAC 3221, ARAC 2211, ARAC 3321, and ARTI 1312. These isolates produced indole acetic acid (IAA) with concentrations of 25.82–88.87 ppm, and four isolates were able to dissolve phosphate. Five isolates produced chitinase enzyme with the chitinolytic index of 0.32–1.78.ConclusionThe introduction of actinobacteria in chili plants was also proven to extend the incubation period, reduce the incidence of disease, and reduce the severity of anthracnose disease compared to negative controls and mancozeb. Actinobacteria can suppress pathogenic microorganisms that can inhibit plant growth. Actinobacteria have the potential to increase the growth and production of chili plants. The results of 16S rRNA sequences showed that the five potential isolates were identified as Streptomyces cellulose, S. fradiae, S. olivaceus, S. pseudogriseolus, and S. griseoflavus.

Uji Kemampuan Serbuk Daun Jambu Biji (Psidium guajava L.) dalam Mengendalikan Penyakit Antraknosa pada Tanaman Terung (Solanum melongena L.)

This study aims to determine the ability of guava leaf powder (P. guajava L.) in controlling anthracnose disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum sp. on eggplant (S. melongena L.). This research was conducted in March – July 2022. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which consisted of 6 treatments, each treatment was repeated 4 times so that there were 24 treatment units and each replicate consisted of 5 plants, so a total of 120 plants . The treatments used were 0, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 g of guava leaf powder + 100 ml of distilled water. Based on the observed concentration of 25 g of guava leaf powder + 100 ml of distilled water (T2) it has the longest incubation period of 11.74 days with disease incidence and disease intensity of 18.49% and 3.66%, respectively

Efficacy of Lactic Acid Bacteria as a Biocontrol Agent against Anthracnose (Persea americana Miller) Decay in Avocado (Persea americana) cv Fuerte Fruit

Anthracnose disease is still a threat to avocado fruit quality, and the use of fungicide (Plochloraz®) for its control has generated safety concerns that necessitate the search for alternatives. Therefore, the efficiency of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from fresh fruits and vegetables as biocontrol agents against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was investigated in this study. Weissella cibaria 21 (LAB 21), Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides 56 (LAB 56), Weissella confusa 17 (LAB 17), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 75 (LAB 75), and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 171 (LAB 171) were evaluated in vitro as potential biocontrol agents to replace the Prochloraz® that is currently used in susceptible avocado (Persea americana Miller) Fuerte fruit. To confirm the biocontrol activity of the selected LAB strains, the antagonistic growth, spore germination, LAB recovery, nutrient competition, acid tolerance, and biofilm formation were assessed. In fruit treated with a LAB cell suspension, curatively inoculated with C. gloeosporioides, or naturally infected avocado cv Fuerte fruit, the epicatechin content and expression of defense-related genes (PAL, LOX, AVFADl 2–3, AVFAEL, and FLS) were compared with Prochloraz® and sterile water (control) treatments. With LAB 56, LAB 75, and LAB 21, significant inhibition of radial mycelial growth (MGI) (>90%) and spore germination (100%) was observed similar to those due to Prochloraz®. The MGI increased with a reduction in nutrient concentration. LAB strains reduced anthracnose disease incidence and severity compared with Prochloraz® and were the highest in LAB 21 and LAB 56. The LAB 21 and LAB 56 strains produced strong biofilms against C. gloeosporioides. In contrast to LAB 56, the control, and Prochloraz®, and LAB 21 had the highest epicatechin content (406 mg/g) and upregulated the PAL, AVFADl 2–3, AVFAEl, and FLS genes, thereby reducing the incidence of anthracnose in avocado fruit. As a result, LAB 21 suspensions can be used as an alternative to Prochloraz® in the control of anthracnose disease.

Isolation, Identification, and Characterization of Endophytic Bacillus from Walnut (Juglans sigillata) Root and Its Biocontrol Effects on Walnut Anthracnose

Anthracnose is a major disease of walnut, which seriously reduces the yield and quality of walnut in Yunnan province. Therefore, it is necessary to explore and find a biological control agent for the prevention and control of anthracnose disease. In this study, an endophytic Bacillus WB1, with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity was isolated and screened from healthy walnut roots. The strain WB1 was identified as Bacillus siamensis WB1 based on morphological characteristics, physiological and biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Bacillus siamensis WB1 produces siderophores and indole-3-acetic acid and solubilizes inorganic phosphate. The strain WB1 not only showed a significant inhibition effect on fourteen phytopathogens, but also showed obvious inhibition on the spore germination of Colletotrichum acutatum. Meanwhile, strain WB1 can code genes for the production of antifungal lipopeptides and generate extracellular hydrolytic enzymes (protease, β-1, 3-glucanase, cellulase, and amylase). In addition, WB1 activated the systemic resistance of the host plant by enhancing the activity of defense enzymes, including phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), peroxidase (POD), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). The results of greenhouse assays also revealed that B. siamensis WB1 can effectively reduce the occurrence and severity of walnut anthracnose disease. These results also indicated that B. siamensis WB1 is a potential biocontrol agent for walnut anthracnose.

Physicochemical characterisations of nanoencapsulated Eucalyptus globulus oil with gum Arabic and gum Arabic nanocapsule and their biocontrol effect on anthracnose disease of Syzygium malaccense Fruits

Nanoencapsulated E. globulus oil (NP and NC) and gum Arabic (NNP and NC) were prepared using nanoprecipitation (NP and NNP) and nanocapsule elaboration (NC and NNC) methods. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/GC-MS) were used to analyse the oil used in this study. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), loading capacity (LC), and encapsulation efficiency (EE) were used to characterise the nanoencapsulated oil. In addition to characterisation, an in-vitro kinetics study of the nanoencapsulated oil was carried out. Fungi were also isolated from rotten S. malaccense, and the pathogenicity of the fungi was determined. Furthermore, the nanoencapsulated oil was used to determine the in-vitro and in-vivo control of anthracnose in the fruits. The GC/GC-MS analysis revealed that eucalyptol (63.81%) was the most abundant constituent of the Eucalyptus oil. The DLS revealed that the average particle size of NP (219±280.94nm) increased compared to NNP (51.8768.44nm), while the average particle size of NC (516±165.21nm) decreased compared to NNC (548±73.73nm). Similarly, the average particle size as measured by TEM followed the same pattern as DLS, NP (7.52±3.54nm), NNP (4.43±1.18nm), NC (6.24±2.13nm), and NNC (8.89±1.54nm). Furthermore, there were additional FTIR peaks with the incorporation of the oil (NP) via the nanoprecipitation method; however, there was no peak with the incorporation of the oil (NC) via the nanocapsule elaboration method. The oil's (NP and NC) incorporation with the gum Arabic's (NNP and NP) LC, EE, and in-vitro release were all affected. Fungi isolated from rotten S. malaccense fruits revealed the presence of Rhizopus stolonifer, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Aspergillus niger; C. gloeosporioides was also confirmed to be the cause of the rot in S. malaccense fruits. The nanoencapsulated oil's antifungal activities indicated that it could be used to control anthracnose disease in S. malaccense fruits.

Anthracnose Disease Control and Postharvest Quality of Hass Avocado Stored in Biobased PLA/PBAT/Pine Essential Oil/Chitosan Active Packaging Nets.

For sale in the domestic market, Hass avocados are kept in non-biodegradable plastic nets and stored at an ambient temperature. The fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides can cause important losses at this stage. Consequently, formulations based on polylactic acid (PLA)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) 60/40 biodegradable blends added with pine essential oil (PEO) at 10, 12, 14, and 20% and coated with 1% chitosan (CH) were used for the elaboration of nets, which were evaluated on C. gloeosporioides and Rhizopus stolonifer on nutrient media and fruit and on the ripening behavior of Hass avocados at ambient temperature. The spore germination stage of C. gloeosporioides was the most extensively damaged (78% inhibition). The incidence of anthracnose was notably reduced by almost 80% in the avocados stored in the 60/40 PLA/PBAT nets coated with 1% CH. The overall values regarding weight loss, °Brix, and dry matter were c.a. 23.5%, 7.5, and 24.5%, respectively. The changes in firmness, color, and CO2 production were particularly associated with the initial harvest index and storage temperature rather than with the nets. In future research, essays on nets should include evaluations at the commercial levels.

Identification of phenolic compounds and active antifungal ingredients of walnut in response to anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides)

Phenolic compounds play important roles in pharmacology, nutrition and inhibition of pathogens. However, there are few studies on the identification of phenolic compounds related to walnut anthracnose resistance. In this study, we examined the walnut cultivars ‘Amigo’ and ‘HuoTe’, which are resistant and susceptible to anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides), respectively. After inoculation with C. gloeosporioides, the overlapping differentially expressed genes of ‘Amigo’ and ‘HuoTe’ were mainly enriched in the phenolic compound biosynthesis pathway, and the genes related to chorismate and phenylalanine upstream metabolism pathways were induced. The phenolic compounds in the husks of ‘Amigo’ and ‘HuoTe’ were mainly phenylpropanoids-phenolic acids, benzoic acid derivatives-phenolic acids, procyanidins and flavonols. Further analysis revealed that 11 phenolic compounds were putatively related to the response to C. gloeosporioides. Subsequently, we conducted sensitivity tests with these potential active ingredients and found that 4-coumaric acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid inhibited C. gloeosporioides growth and can be used as effective antifungal agents. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 4-coumaric acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were 1 g L−1 and 2 g L−1, respectively. The mixed antifungal agents composed of 4-coumaric acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid had an obvious inhibitory effect on C. gloeosporioides in walnut fruit with an MIC ratio of 1:2. These results reveal the induced phenolic compounds of walnut husk and their active ingredients in response to anthracnose and provide a basis for further research on regulating and controlling anthracnose disease.

Control of Antracnose Disease in Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) Using Endophytic Fungi

Anthracnose is a disease that affects tomato plants and causes farmers to lose money. The fungus Colletotrichum coccodes causes this disease, which manifests as small blackish spots on the tomato. The fruit then becomes shrivelled and dry, and it rots. One of the safest and most environmentally friendly methods of biological control is the use of endophytic fungi. These fungi are found in living plant tissue and can form colonies in the tissue without harming the host or causing disease symptoms. The goal of this study was to identify the different types of endophytic fungi found in tomatoes, as well as the role of endophytic fungi in the control of anthracnose disease. Plant samples were collected in Lempake Village in North Samarinda District, and antagonists between the endophytic fungi found in tomatoes and pathogens that cause anthracnose disease were tested. In the tomato plants, the researchers discovered four genera of endophytic fungi: Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Trichoderma sp., and Rhizopus sp. Antagonist tests revealed that Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, and Rhizopus sp. fungi suppressed pathogenic fungi that cause anthracnose disease by 33.17%, 36.43%, and 38.37%, respectively. The fungus Trichoderma sp. had the best ability to control anthracnose.
