Anterior cervical hypertrichosis: A rare location

We report the case of a twelve-year-old male who presented with isolated anterior cervical hypertrichosis persistent since birth. No notion of trauma or local inflammation or the use of a topical treatment was noted. The patient had no other clinical symptoms and no similar family history. A clinical examination found a tuft of hair, approx. 6 × 3 cm in size, at the level of the mid-neck region, consisting of fine, brown hairs, 3 cm in length (Fig. 1a), with a dermoscopic appearance showing terminal hair and fluffy hair without other associated signs. (Fig. 1b). The rest of the somatic examination was unremarkable. A laser hair removal treatment was offered to the patient with a good response.

Clinical Cases of Anterior Cervical Hypertrichosis

Anterior cervical hypertrichosis (ACH) may be only an isolated aesthetic finding, but it may also be associated with other underlying conditions, including neurological and ocular disorders. In order to recognize this uncommon entity, it is imperative to provide detailed physical examination and clinical history to exclude the possible associated abnormalities in patients with ACH. In those cases that ACH represents only a cosmetic problem for the patient, laser hair removal is recommended. We hereby presented 2 cases of ACH in two young girls and discussed about all the differential diagnoses and how to rule out associated anomalies. The most useful workout to rule out associated underlying conditions are described, and cosmetic treatment with laser hair removal devices is also commented.

Linear lichen planus is a rare variety of lichen planus characterized by lesions following the lines of Blaschko. Anterior cervical hypertrichosis is a rare and unrecognized form of local congenital hypertrichosis. It is characterized by the presence of a tuft of terminal hair on the anterior cervical region. We report an exceptional association of these two entities.

Cleft palate associated with Turner's syndrome and anterior cervical hypertrichosis

Turner's syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects development in female. It is associated with multiple medical issues such as impaired growth, ovarian insufficiency, cardiovascular abnormalities, and endocrine and skeletal abnormalities. Hypertrichosis is the growth of an increased quantity of thick hair on any part of the skin surface; it is mostly seen as an isolated finding but rarely associated with other abnormalities. Cleft lip and palate are uncommon anomalies in Turner's syndrome and anterior cervical hypertrichosis. We report a case of cleft palate associated with Turner syndrome and anterior cervical hypertrichosis. The clinical features, diagnosis, and its management are discussed.

Hipertricosis cervical anterior: caso clínico

The non-syndromic anterior cervical hypertrichosis (OMIM N° 600457) is a genetic disorder characterized by a patch of hair at the level of the laryngeal prominence. We present a 12-year-old boy with anterior cervical hypertrichosis and mild generalized hypertrichosis. He has no neurological, ophthalmological or skeletal anomalies. The clinical follow up is 10 years.

Hypertrichose cervicale antérieure sporadique

Anterior cervical hypertrichosis is a rare and little-known form of congenital localized hypertrichosis. It is characterized by the presence of a tuft of terminal hairs in the anterior cervical region. We report four typical clinical observations of this condition. Four patients aged from 5 to 21 years were seen for a tuft of terminal long hair on the neck, next to the cricoid cartilage, recorded at birth or during early childhood. There was no indication of previous trauma or topical drug application. No similar familial history was found. In one case, histological examination performed for suspicion of an "atypical" smooth muscle hamartoma contributed nothing of note. No neurological abnormalities were observed. In one case there was a history of chronic juvenile idiopathic arthritis and familial thyroid disease. Treatment with 5 sessions of laser hair removal was proposed in one case and the improvement was considered satisfactory by the patient. Anterior cervical hypertrichosis constitute a specific clinical picture of a benign nature, and is sometimes associated with neurological, orthopaedic or ocular abnormalities. Although rarely reported, its frequency is probably underestimated.

Hypertrichosis is the excessive hair growth anywhere on the body. It may be classified by age of onset and according to the extension as congenital or acquired and localized or generalized. We report the case of a young girl with anterior cervical hypertrichosis, an uncommon variant of localized congenital hypertrichosis. The anterior cervical hypertrichosis may be associated with other clinical signs that must be known to make a proper assessment.

Two Cases of Isolated Anterior Cervical Hypertrichosis

Two unrelated Hispanic females, ages 4 and 3 years, respectively, each presented with a solitary patch of excessive terminal hair growth in the midline of the neck. This rare form of congenital localized hypertrichosis, known as anterior cervical hypertrichosis, is reported here as an isolated defect with no other underlying abnormalities.

To date, only 28 cases of anterior cervical hypertrichosis have been reported. Although it is normally an isolated finding, it may be associated with mental retardation, hallux valgus, retinal disorders, other hair disorders, facial dysmorphism, or sensory and motor peripheral neuropathy. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman who presented with this condition as an isolated finding.

Sporadic nonsyndromal anterior cervical hypertrichosis: case report and review of the literature

A 13-year-old girl presented with cosmetically disturbing excessive hair growth in the anterior cervical region that had been present since birth. An X-ray of the cervical and lumbosacral spine did not show any ossal changes. Based on the clinical findings, the diagnosis of anterior cervical hypertrichosis was made. We successfully treated the patient with an intense pulsed light source. Here, we briefly discuss and review the clinical presentation and causes of localized and generalized hypertrichosis as well as possible treatment modalities.

Anterior cervical hypertrichosis and mental retardation

Anterior cervical hypertrichosis or hairy throat is a rare dysmorphic sign described in a total of 19 patients so far. The association with a number of additional features has been reported, including mental retardation. We report on another patient with this condition who also had moderate mental retardation, mildly dysmorphic facial features, obesity, hypermetropia and additional hair anomalies (low dorsal hair line on the neck, lumbosacral hypertrichosis). Karyotype and array comparative genomic hybridization analysis at 1 Mb resolution were normal.

Familial anterior cervical hypertrichosis

To the Editor: Anterior cervical hypertrichosis is a very rare form of primary localized hypertrichosis.1 To our knowledge, only 2 cases of familial anterior cervical hypertrichosis have been reported.2-3 Here we describe a patient with anterior cervical hypertrichosis whose family history shows that 2 other individuals in 2 generations of her family had the same hypertrichosis localized to the anterior cervical region.

Mental retardation in a boy with anterior cervical hypertrichosis

Anterior cervical hypertrichosis (ACH) is a rare form of localized hypertrichosis with 15 previously reported cases. ACH has been considered to be a dominant phenotype, either X-linked or autosomal [OMIM 600457]. ACH was associated with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) in one family, in which the proband also exhibited severe chorioretinal degeneration and optic atrophy, probably as a different entity [OMIM 239840]. A Mexican boy with congenital ACH associated with moderate mental retardation, abnormal EEG, mild microcephaly, hypertrichosis on the back, and hallux valgus is presented here. An equal sex ratio found in 16 reported cases as well as the suggestion of a paternal age effect in one report appear most consistent with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance for this trait. It remains unclear if isolated ACH, ACH-HMSN, or other associated findings reported in patients with ACH, including unusual features found in our case, are part of ACH or fortuitous associations, due to the small number of affected patients and different ascertainment biases present in previous reports.

Familial congenital anterior cervical hypertrichosis associated with peripheral sensory and motor neuropathy—A new syndrome?

We present three patients with familial congenital hypertrichosis localized to the anterior cervical region, associated with peripheral sensory and motor neuropathy. This association may represent a new neurocutaneous syndrome. The association of anterior midline cutaneous lesions with an underlying malformation is discussed.
