Low-Profile Broadband Dual-Polarized Dipole Antenna for Base Station Applications

A low-profile broadband dual-polarized antenna is investigated for base station applications. It consists of two orthogonal dipoles, fork-shaped feeding lines, an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC), and parasitic strips. By utilizing the Brillouin dispersion diagram, the AMC is designed as the antenna reflector. It has a wide in-phase reflection bandwidth of 54.7% (1.54–2.70 GHz) and a surface-wave bound range of 0–2.65 GHz. This design effectively reduces the antenna profile by over 50% compared to traditional antennas without an AMC. For demonstration, a prototype is fabricated for 2G/3G/LTE base station applications. Good agreement between the simulations and measurements is observed. The measured −10-dB impedance bandwidth of our antenna is 55.4% (1.58–2.79 GHz), with a stable gain of 9.5 dBi and a high isolation of more than 30 dB across the impedance passband. As a result, this antenna is an excellent candidate for miniaturized base station antenna applications.

A Novel Dual-Polarized Magnetoelectric Dipole Antenna and Its Array for LTE and 5G Sub-6 GHz Base Station Applications

This study presents a novel dual-polarized magnetoelectric dipole antenna and its array with director and rectangular parasitic metal patches for LTE and 5G sub-6 GHz base station applications. This antenna is composed of L-shaped magnetic dipoles, planar electric dipoles, rectangular director, rectangular parasitic metal patches, and η-shaped feed probes. The gain and bandwidth were enhanced by using the director and parasitic metal patches. The measured impedance bandwidth of the antenna was 82.8% (1.62-3.91 GHz, VSWR < 1.5), and its gain was 10 ± 0.5 dBi. The profile of the antenna unit, operated at 1.7 GHz, was only 42 mm (0.227λ0, where λ0 represents the free space wavelength corresponding to the lowest resonance frequency point). Subsequently, four antenna units were arranged in a line array with 0.6λ0 spacing. Both the antenna and its array were fabricated and measured. The measurement results show that the array has good radiation characteristics, such as broad bandwidth covering 1.65-3.97 GHz (VSWR < 1.5), high gain (its gain was great than 15.2 dBi), and high radiation efficiency (>90%). Its HPBWs were 63° ± 4° and 15° ± 2° for H- and E-planes, respectively. The design can cover TD-LTE and 5G sub-6 GHz NR n78 frequency bands very well, meaning that this is a good candidate antenna for base station applications.

A Conical Beam Antenna Using a Monopole Wire and Rectangular Copper Probe with Four Parasitic Sleeves for UMTS/WLAN Applications

This paper aimed to present a wideband monopole antenna for base station applications of indoor reception for UMTS (B1) and WLAN (IEEE 802.11b) systems. The operating frequency was ranged from 1.92 GHz to 2.5 GHz. The proposed antenna was made up of a probe and four connecting parasitic sleeves from the upper copper circular patch to the ground. The rectangular probe structure technique was used to extend the frequency band and effectively improve the matching conditions. The results from simulation and measurement showed that the presented antenna had a proper matching impedance of |S11| (dB) lower than -10 dB in the frequency band from 1.71 GHz to 3.72 GHz and also from 1.58 GHz to 2.98 GHz, respectively. The percentage of bandwidth was 74.03% and 61.40%, respectively. The antenna had a conical radiation pattern. The simulated and measured gains were 2.93 dBi to 3.6 dBi and 2.58 dBi to 3.54 dBi, respectively.

Broadband Dual-Polarized Multidipole Antenna for Base Station Applications

A wideband dual-polarized multidipole antenna for base station applications is proposed. It consists of a pair of large square-shaped loop dipoles and a pair of small rectangle loop dipoles as radiation elements. A pair of small rectangle loop dipoles is fed by T-shaped feed structure which is in the large square-shaped loop dipoles radiating arm so that the antenna generates an additional resonance and obtains a wider bandwidth. The proposed antenna was fabricated and measured, and the results show that the antenna achieves a wide impedance bandwidth of 63.7 % with VSWR&lt;1.5 covering the frequency range from 1.55 to 3 GHz. A high isolation is better than 29 dB within the operating frequency bandwidth. Moreover, an average gain 8 dBi and a stable radiation pattern with 3 dB beamwidth of 69° ± 4° at H-plane are obtained.

Low‐profile dual‐polarised metasurface‐enabled antenna array for base‐station applications

This Letter presents a dual linearly polarised microstrip antenna for base station applications. Firstly, a dual-polarised metasurface-based antenna element employing differential feeding technology is proposed. The proposed antenna element achieves a simulated bandwidth of 11.6% for |S 11 | < −15 dB, mutual coupling better than 30 dB, and the cross-polarisation discrimination level over 35 dB. Secondly, based on the antenna element, a 3 × 3 antenna array is eventually presented, which was fabricated and characterised. The measured bandwidth is 12% for |S 11 | < −10 dB, and the port-isolation is over 25 dB. The superiorities of low-profile and high port isolation indicate that the proposed design is a promising candidate for sub-6G base-station applications.

A Dual-Broadband Printed Dipole Antenna for 2G/3G/4G Base Station Applications

A new dual-broadband printed dipole antenna for base station applications is proposed in this communication. This antenna has three different dipoles with the same feed point and an extra parasitic strip. The two arms of the three dipoles are printed on opposite sides of the substrate and symmetrical on the centerline, but the parasitic strip at the end of the dipole is just put on one side. Besides, a U-shaped reflector is designed at the bottom of the antenna to realize good radiation characteristics in the working frequency. The simulated and measured results show good agreement. The two studied bands are both broadened which, respectively, achieve 36.7% (690–1000MHz) and 47.3% (1710–2770MHz) for the lower and higher bands so as to satisfy the 2G/3G/4G wireless communication, and the corresponding gains of 4-5dBi and 5-6dBi are also obtained.

An Optimization Method for the Synthesis of Flat-Top Radiation Patterns in the Near- and Far-Field Regions

This paper presents an optimization method for the design of array antennas with flat-top radiation patterns in the far-field and near-field regions, in which the synthesis of flat-top radiation patterns is formulated as a quadratically constrained quadratic programing (QCQP) problem with equality constraints. It is shown that the notoriously difficult QCQP problem can be linearized and simplified for the synthesis of flat-top radiation patterns in the far-field region and can be extended to the near-field region by introducing a weighted diagonal matrix. To validate the optimization theory, a flat-top sector beam antenna for base station applications and an RFID bookshelf reader antenna are designed and fabricated. Simulation and measurement results show that the base station antenna operating at 5.4 GHz provides a flat-top radiation pattern with less than 1 dB fluctuation in the desired covering range of the main beam. The five-element RFID reader antenna working in the UHF band for library applications is demonstrated to generate uniform electric field intensity with less than 3 dB fluctuation across the whole bookshelf.

Bipolar dual‐band MPRS‐FSS sectoral antenna for base station applications

AbstractThis article deals specifically with sectoral antennas and focuses on the ability to design a bipolar dual‐band structure by combining double layers metallic partially reflective surface (MPRS) working on orthogonal polarizations as a superstrate with a frequency selective surfaces (FSS) as a substrate , thus making it possible to circumvent the narrow bandwidth problem. The use of metallic structures offers a new approach to industrial partners to reduce costs and to facilitate design techniques. This antenna provides vertical and horizontal polarizations with a sectoral radiation pattern presenting a half power beamwidth of at least 60° in the azimuth plane. We obtain the different operating frequencies by adjusting the distance of MPRS layers from FSS layer. The proposed structure presents more than 15 dBi directivity enhancement at 4.8 and 5.6 GHz as compared to those of a patch antenna with 8 dB directivity. The geometry and characteristics of the antenna are detailed and a design method is proposed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Optimized WiMAX MIMO antenna for base station applications with polarization and spatial diversity

This paper presents a new approach in the design of a WiMAX base station antenna compatible with multiple input multiple output (MIMO) capabilities. Usually the antenna is designed taking into account the classic antenna parameters (S-parameters, radiating performances, and gain) and then integrated into the entire communication system. The objective of this paper is to define a new approach in the design of a WiMAX radio link integrating the antenna parameters, the propagation effects, and the demodulation performance. The paper focuses on the MIMO link, especially on polarization diversity using cross-polarized antennas. A vectorial signal model for polarization diversity communication is then defined including the coupling effects. MIMO antenna candidates are analyzed. Following this new approach, a broadband dual-polarized base station antenna network for WiMAX coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (COFDM) waveforms was optimized, realized, and measured for MIMO communications. Results are presented from an antenna point of view. Full communication performances are presented.

Dual-band reconfigurable antenna for base-station applications

A novel reconfigurable antenna for dual-band operation is proposed. This antenna is composed of two square patches for lower frequency (patch 1) and upper frequency (patch 2), patch 2 being embedded in the centre cavity of patch 1. Frequency control can be realised using a switching circuit placed in the backside of the radiators without any switching components and capacitor variable components such as varactors, thus the proposed antenna can overcome the structural fragility of general reconfigurable antennas and operate in wideband with high gain characteristic (23% bandwidth with 8.4 dBi gain for band 1 and 12.1% with 9.0 dBi for band 2). Using the electrical and structural characteristics, the proposed antenna can be applied in base-station antennas providing multiple communication services.

Omnidirectional Electromagnetic Band Gap Antenna for Base Station Applications

This letter presents the study of metallic omnidirectional electromagnetic band gap (EBG) antennas with an omnidirectional pattern in the azimuth plane for base station applications. The technique used to solve the matching problem, generally encountered with this type of antenna is also detailed. A cylindrical EBG antenna for HiperLAN2 applications [5.15-5.35] GHz has been designed and its performances are disclosed. Finally, a prototype has been realized and the experimental measurements are compared to the simulated ones.
