Drivers and constraints of students’ entrepreneurial intentions across cultural contexts: A neo-configurational perspective

Even though there is evidence of interconnectedness among antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions, emphasizing the need for understanding their joint effects, cross-cultural studies focused on students' entrepreneurial intentions have primarily looked into the isolated effects of these factors, neglecting their complex interplay. Drawing upon complexity theory, we aim to fill this gap by exploring how various factors mutually influence students' entrepreneurial intentions across diverse cultural settings. We employ the fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis on a sample of 144 students to generate novel insights about drivers and constraints of entrepreneurial intentions in two distant cultural clusters, i.e., Confucian Asia and Eastern Europe. Our findings shed light on how attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and barriers intertwine to shape students' entrepreneurial intentions in different cultural settings, thereby affirming the principles of the neo-configurational perspective adopted in this study—multiple conjunctural causation, causal equifinality, and causal asymmetry. While enriching our understanding of the role of national culture in shaping entrepreneurial intentions, this study provides unique insights to management education scholars and practitioners about the need for tailoring entrepreneurial curricula based on the complexity and cultural sensitivity of antecedents of students’ entrepreneurial intentions.

Seeking the roots of entrepreneurship: Childhood and adolescence extraversion predict entrepreneurial intention in adults

AbstractEntrepreneurial personality research has mostly used cross‐sectional data, giving rise to the question of whether the results can be used to predict entrepreneurial outcomes. Using a unique longitudinal dataset, we investigate whether and from what age personality in childhood and adolescence predicts entrepreneurial intention in young adulthood. We cover a time span of 17 years by assessing personality at four different developmental phases (6–9, 9–12, 12–15, and 14–17 years of age) and one measurement of entrepreneurial intention in young adulthood (23–26 years of age). We employ a variable‐oriented approach by studying the Big Five traits—imagination, conscientiousness, extraversion, benevolence, and emotional stability—individually and a person‐oriented approach by studying the “entrepreneurial personality profile,” a configuration of these traits. Extraversion as measured at 9–12 years already predicts entrepreneurial intention in young adulthood. This relationship becomes stronger as the age at which extraversion is measured increases. Unlike earlier literature, we do not find clear prospective relationships regarding the other traits. Our study presents insights into the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention and highlights the importance of extraversion in childhood and adolescence. The difference between our results and those of previous cross‐sectional research highlights the importance of using longitudinal data.

The Effects of Entrepreneurship Leadership on Youth Entrepreneurial Intentions Post-COVID-19: The Case of Gauteng

The purpose of this research was to assess the effects of entrepreneurship leadership on youth’s entrepreneurial intentions in Gauteng province, South Africa. To test this relationship and attempt to answer the research question, “To what extent does entrepreneurship leadership influence youth entrepreneurial intentions post-COVID-19?” a conceptual model supported by the theory of Planned Behaviour was adopted. Data were collected from 825 youths in Gauteng province, South Africa, through a self-administered questionnaire. The Likert scale was applied to the questionnaire. Entrepreneurship leadership was observed to directly relate to attitude towards entrepreneurship and perceived environmental support and entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurial action. Furthermore, the results provide evidence that the three antecedents of entrepreneurial intention: attitude towards entrepreneurship, perceived entrepreneurial abilities and perceived COVID-19 environment influence entrepreneurial intention. Participation in entrepreneurship leadership was observed to positively influence youth intentions to become entrepreneurs. Furthermore, policymakers are encouraged to ensure the implementation of regulations that are conducive to business operations and stimulate youth participation in entrepreneurial activities. The obtained results suggest that attitude towards entrepreneurship and perceived environmental support are observed to completely and partially mediate (respectively) the relationship between three independent variables (entrepreneurship leadership, perceived post-COVID-19 environment and entrepreneurship education) and entrepreneurship intention. Leadership in entrepreneurship is crucial as it creates direction for the business in the post-COVID-19 era. This study attempts to address the gap in the literature concerning the effects of entrepreneurial factors on entrepreneurial intentions through the use of Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behaviour.

Antecedents of entrepreneurial intention: A study on students from the tourism management department

Undoubtedly, deciding to enter the business world is a challenging decision that is influenced by several factors. Some of them are cultural since they deal with widespread beliefs about entrepreneurial activity in a community at a certain time. Other factors are related to the entrepreneur’s personal characteristics. As young people in Greece are interested in starting their own businesses they interact with their peers around the world, mainly in Europe, for exchanging ideas, information and good practices, despite the cultural differences between the North and the South of Europe. This paper will address the issue of shaping an entrepreneur in Greece and the role of factors such as entrepreneurship education, personal characteristics, and social norms in his/her entrepreneurial intention. A sample of 143 students in the tourism department of a Greek University answered an online questionnaire at the end of the semester. Findings show that Personal Attitude (PA), Social Norms (SN) and Self-efficacy (SE) had a significant impact on the Entrepreneurial Intention (EI) of tourism students. The characteristics of those starting up businesses in the tourism sector will also be reviewed, and the consequences for policy makers will be examined to encourage new start-ups and increase the survival chances of the existing ones.

Serious Games in Entrepreneurship Education: A Learner Satisfaction and Theory of Planned Behaviour Approaches

This study aimed to understand whether serious games in entrepreneurship education can improve the antecedents and entrepreneurial intention. Serious games are defined as tools designed to educate or train through entertainment, and providing environments that facilitate deeper learning. A pre-test, post-test quasi-experimental design was used by considering 963 undergraduate students. This study adopted analysis techniques such as one-way repeated measures analysis of variance, two-sample t-test and structural equation modelling to test the hypotheses. The findings show that students in the treatment group increased their attitudes, perceived control, and overall entrepreneurial intention compared to the control group. Equally important is highlighting the positive relationship between learner satisfaction using serious games and the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention in the treatment group. These findings provide insights into the discussions that remain open about the effects of entrepreneurship education on the intention by revealing the impact of specific benefits for students derived from serious games in the course. The study also has broader implications for the theory and practice of teaching entrepreneurship.

Personal Factors, Contextual Factors, Entrepreneurial Intention, And Nascent Entrepreneurial Behavior: A Systematic Literature Review

Most of developing and developed countries realize that a lack of entrepreneurial intention and failure to engage in nascent entrepreneurial behavior can explain a lack of business success. The current study addresses (1) the current knowledge on entrepreneurial intention and nascent entrepreneurial behavior, (2) the areas where empirical research is lacking in entrepreneurial intention and nascent entrepreneurial behavior, (3) the theories used to establish the relationship between entrepreneurial intention, antecedents of entrepreneurial intention, personal factors, contextual factors, and nascent entrepreneurial behavior, and (4) in which context, research has primarily been conducted on entrepreneurial intention and nascent entrepreneurial behavior. As the methodology of the study, inititally articles were reviewed in the literature, followed by a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). To meet the research aims, 185 publications published between 2009 and 2022 were retrieved from six well-accepted databases, and bibliometric analysis was done. The results found that scholarly attention should be given to personal factors, contextual factors, antecedents of entrepreneurial intention, and nascent entrepreneurial behavior rather than entrepreneurial education. The study needed a systematic and empirical investigation combining personal factors, contextual factors, antecedents of entrepreneurial intention, and nascent entrepreneurial behavior with a solid theoretical underpinning.

Examining the Impact of COVID-19 on Entrepreneurial Intention through a Stimulus–Organism–Response Perspective

Among scholars, there is an interest in understanding how entrepreneurial behavior is influenced by the consequences of crises. The COVID-19 pandemic may negatively or positively affect individuals’ behavior, including entrepreneurial intention. Thus, this paper seeks to study whether or not the economic shock caused by the pandemic reinforces the intention to start a business. The research was administered at the individual level by distributing a structured survey. The hypotheses were developed based on a unique conceptual framework integrating the planned behavior theory and a stimulus–organism–response perspective. The relationships were tested using the structural equation modeling method with an original dataset of more than 800 respondents from three post-communist transition countries. The results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic, seen as an opportunity, positively influences both the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention and individuals’ intention to start a business. The message that these findings convey is that, even in crises, there are opportunities from which one can benefit, including the individual’s propensity to engage in startup activities. By examining the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on entrepreneurial behavior, educational institutions and policymakers can design effective policies to foster entrepreneurship and reduce unemployment, particularly among the youth.

Unveiling the role of entrepreneurial knowledge and cognition as antecedents of entrepreneurial intention: a meta-analytic study

Although entrepreneurial intention has been regarded as one of the most important drivers of creativity, innovation, and performance in firms, a comprehensive framework that integrates the relevant influential factors has yet to be developed. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior and the social cognitive career theory, this study investigates the critical antecedents, mediators, and moderators of entrepreneurial intention. A meta-analytic approach is employed to validate the proposed hypotheses, and 89 primary studies with a total sample size of 51,919 are analyzed. The results indicate the existence of differences in the manner in which entrepreneurial knowledge influences cognitive antecedents in the individuals who participate in new ventures. Furthermore, personal attitude and self-efficacy play a vital role in predicting entrepreneurial intention. Demographic characteristics (such as age, gender, and education background) significantly moderate the relationship between cognitive antecedents and entrepreneurial intention, indicating that men tend to adopt more entrepreneurial behaviors than women, that older individuals with more positive attitudes have a higher propensity to start ventures than younger ones, and that those with higher education attainment tend to have lower self-employment. These findings offer several recommendations. They could provide valuable references for further academic work, which should aim to extend and validate them. The findings are also very beneficial for professional experts tasked with the design of effective programs for enhancing entrepreneurial behavior.

Cultural intelligence, entrepreneurial intentions and the moderating role of the institutional environment

PurposeEntrepreneurial intentions have traditionally been linked to an entrepreneur's personal ability to take advantage of opportunities. Yet, entrepreneurs' perceptions of contextual factors, which extend beyond one's control, deserve equal attention. This paper looks at the role played by cultural intelligence and the institutional environment in shaping entrepreneurial intentions.Design/methodology/approachThe role played by cultural intelligence in entrepreneurial intentions and the mediating role played by the institutional environment were studied quantitatively by analyzing 224 young potential entrepreneurs who had participated in a business plan competition. This study used cross-sectional data, developing an original full collinearity assessment approach to check for any common method bias.FindingsThis study reveals a positive relationship between cultural intelligence and entrepreneurial intentions. Likewise, any favorable perceptions of the institutional environment tend to increase the probability of engaging in entrepreneurship and further strengthen the positive effect of cultural intelligence on entrepreneurial intentions.Originality/valueThis study provides a holistic view of the relationship between the entrepreneur and the context in which ventures are created, explaining the role played by cultural intelligence in entrepreneurship based on evidence drawn from a developing country. This contributes to a critical reflection on personal and environmental factors and the antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions.

“Think entrepreneur – think male”: the effect of reduced gender stereotype threat on women's entrepreneurial intention and opportunity motivation

PurposeEntrepreneurship, which traditionally has been a male occupation, still attracts fewer women than men. Challenging gender stereotypes within entrepreneurship is one avenue to increase women's entrepreneurial intention and promote women entrepreneurship. This study adapts the “think manager – think male” leadership perspective to the entrepreneurship context and explores gender stereotype's implications for both entrepreneurial intention and motivation to become an entrepreneur.Design/methodology/approachA total of 902 Spanish non-entrepreneurs, both male and female, were randomly asked about the representation of successful entrepreneurs (no-gender-mention), successful men entrepreneurs or successful women entrepreneurs (reduced stereotype threat condition vs no-gender-mention or men entrepreneurs' conditions). Then, female participants' entrepreneurial intention, its antecedents (i.e. attitudes toward entrepreneurship, subjective norms and entrepreneurial self-efficacy) and necessity vs opportunity motivation were measured and compared to their male counterparts' scores in those three conditions.FindingsFemale participants reported higher entrepreneurial intention, self-efficacy and opportunity motivation when assigned to the successful women entrepreneurs' condition. Younger participants – compared to older ones – also exhibited higher entrepreneurial intention and opportunity motivation, more positive attitudes toward entrepreneurship and higher scores in subjective norms. Furthermore, findings suggest a woman entrepreneur seems to be less accessible (or more counter-stereotypical) to male participants than to female participants and, thus, the “think entrepreneur – think male” bias is more noticeable in male participants. Therefore, reducing negative stereotype threat for women in entrepreneurship may increase women's entrepreneurial career aspirations. This is of utmost importance to optimize training courses and mentoring programs to strengthen women's self-efficacy in their entrepreneurial skills and capabilities.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature about gender, entrepreneurial intention and motivation by adapting a leadership paradigm (“think manager – think male”) to entrepreneurship (“think entrepreneur – think male”). These findings shed new light on the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention and motivation and have implications for policy measures. Acknowledging that exposure to successful women entrepreneurs as role models potentially facilitates entrepreneurship among women, governments should provide tailor-made incentives and support for women entrepreneurs in the form of awareness raising, networking and in the mass media.

How Can Students' Entrepreneurial Intention Be Increased? The Role of Psychological Capital, Perceived Learning From an Entrepreneurship Education Program, Emotions and Their Relationships.

Entrepreneurship education has become a major focus of interest for researchers and national policy makers to encourage students to pursue entrepreneurial careers. The research on entrepreneurship education–entrepreneurial intentions (EIs) has yielded mixed results, and indicates the need to focus on antecedents of EI. More precisely, the aim of this paper was to examine antecedents of students’ EI in French entrepreneurship education programs. Participants were 460 French university undergraduates. Structural equation modeling results revealed that students’ Psychological Capital (PsyCap) had a significant positive relationship with perceived learning from the program and a significant negative relationship with negative emotions related to entrepreneurial actions. They also show that PsyCap indirectly enhanced EI. More precisely, students with high PsyCap learned more from the program in terms of perceived skills and knowledge and in turn had a higher EI. Moreover, students with high PsyCap had less entrepreneurial action-related doubt, fear and aversion, which also increased EI. This decrease in negative emotions can be explained notably by what students perceived they had learned from the program. This article concludes with the implications of these findings for future research and practical applications.

Entrepreneurial intentions of students and deterrence of entrepreneurial education opportunities: the case of Uzbekistan

This study uses an econometric approach to determine the impact of entrepreneurial business education on the entrepreneurial intentions of students in Uzbekistan. The work is based on extensive research by international experts who determine various antecedents of entrepreneurial intention based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (Eisen, 1991). Such as the attitude to entrepreneurship, perceived behavioral control and subjective norms. In studies of another direction, the importance of entrepreneurial education (PO) in stimulating entrepreneurial intention is discussed. Which then leads to entrepreneurial behavior, namely, opening your own business. The questionnaire prepared by the author is based on a 5-point Likert scale and consists of several separate sections, each of which relates to the above factors. The results of the ordered logistic regression indicate a significant relationship between entrepreneurship education and attitudes to entrepreneurship. The attitude, in turn, has a significant impact on the entrepreneurial intentions of students, accounting for about 5% of the variation. The results obtained will pave the way for future developments in the field of development of entrepreneurial education. Also, they will help to form a more effective state policy in the field of education, in order to increase the development of entrepreneurship in Uzbekistan.

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the role of nature and nurture in students’ entrepreneurial intention (EIs). In doing so, the study examines the relationship between prenatal testosterone exposure (2D:4D), risk-taking propensity, entrepreneurial self-efficacy and EIs. Moreover, the moderating role of entrepreneurial education between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and EI is also investigated.Design/methodology/approachIn line with previous studies on EI, the authors tested hypotheses based on quantitative data obtained from university students.FindingsData were analyzed with the help of the structural equation modeling technique, and the results revealed that all the hypothesized relationships were supported.Originality/valueThe field of entrepreneurship has become an attractive area of research for practitioners and academics. One tinted area of research in entrepreneurship is the investigation of EI because it is a good predictor of entrepreneurial behavior. Several antecedents of EIs have been recognized in the literature ranging from personality traits to environmental factors. However, less is known about the role of biology in entrepreneurship. Incorporating biological factors in the field of entrepreneurship appears to be theoretically viable and sound. Thus, this study investigates the effect of biological factors in the presence of psychological factors on EIs, which is a unique contribution to the literature on entrepreneurship.

Islamic Entrepreurial Values Intention Determinants: An Empirical Model And Case Of Micro Entrepreneurs In Solo Raya Regency

Independent enterprises that are able to exist and survive for several generations and are able to achieve the dreams they aspire to are the hopes of every founder. There are many factors that determine the success of an entrepreneur to survive the tough competition. These factors include the ability to respond internal and external changes quickly and accurately. The ability to win the competition, be able to know the situation, collaborate with other parties to work together and the ability to adapt to competition are the keys to business sustainability. The massive Covid-19 condition is a challenge for independent Moslem micro entrepreneurs to survive. This research aims to test the model whether the attitude values in the form of the concept of Islamic entrepreneurs, social responsibility, local cultural wisdom values have a significant influence on entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurial behavior. The research design is carried out using quantitative methods which explain the causal relationship of one dependent variable which is influenced by several independent variables to be tested. Hypothesis testing is formulated using a multivariate analysis model uses SEM ( Structural Equation Model). The population in the research is Moslem micro-entrepreneurs in Solo Raya Regency. The research sampling technique is conducted through purposive sampling of 165 respondents. The analysis results show that all research hypotheses are supported. Antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions in the form of Islamic entrepreneurial values, Islamic social responsibility and local cultural wisdom have a positive influence and influence on behavior

The impact of stereotyped perceptions of entrepreneurship and gender-role orientation on Slovak women’s entrepreneurial intentions

PurposeThis study aims to investigate how congruence between the image of a successful entrepreneur and one’s own gender-role orientation affects entrepreneurial intentions (EI).Design/methodology/approachA total of 552 working-age adults (49.5% women) answered questions on gender-role orientation, perception of a successful entrepreneur, EI, antecedents of EI (perceived behavioural control (PBC), subjective norm (SN), attitude towards entrepreneurship), entrepreneurial self-efficacy and risk aversion.FindingsWomen reported a lower EI than men, and both male and female participants perceived successful entrepreneurs as masculine. In the final model, biological sex did not predict EIs. Rather, it was associated with the extent to which participants felt they resembled successful entrepreneurs, which, in turn, predicted greater levels of PBC, SNs and attitudes towards entrepreneurship, as well as greater EI.Originality/valueThe study is one of the first to study joint impacts of biological sex, gender and congruence on EIs.

Local Institutional Profile and the Antecedents of Entrepreneurial Intention

Abstract We investigate the effects of the local institutional profile on the antecedents of entrepreneurial intention. First, we advance a conceptual model based on the theory of planned behavior and on institutional theory. In our model, local government policies, regional shared social knowledge and local value systems affect cognition of individuals with regard to entrepreneurial intention. We then test our model using structural equation modeling (SEM) based on a survey of 2150 respondents in Brazil. The country is particularly interesting for the analysis since it presents a continental dimension, being formed by five regions with different geographic, economic, and social characteristics. Our regression models corroborate our hypotheses. Perceived behavior control is a function of both the local cognitive dimension and the local regulatory dimension. The personal attitude is determined by all the local institutional dimensions (cognitive, regulatory, and normative dimensions). Subjective norms, in turn, are a function of the local normative dimension. This effect is interesting because it points to regional variability in the way individuals appreciate entrepreneurial activity and how this translates into a statistically significant difference in entrepreneurial intention among the country’s regions.
