Weakened western Indian Ocean dominance on Antarctic sea ice variability in a changing climate.

Patterns of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) exhibit strong diversity, ranging from being dominated by the western tropical Indian Ocean (WTIO) to the eastern tropical Indian Ocean (ETIO). Whether and how the different types of IOD variability patterns affect the variability of Antarctic sea ice is not known, nor is how the impact may change in a warming climate. Here, we find that the leading mode of austral spring Antarctic sea ice variability is dominated by WTIO SST variability rather than ETIO SST or El Niño-Southern Oscillation. WTIO warm SST anomalies excite a poleward-propagating Rossby wave, inducing a tri-polar anomaly pattern characterized by a decrease in sea ice near the Amundsen Sea but an increase in regions on both sides. Such impact has been weakening in the two decades post-2000, accompanied by weakened WTIO SST variability. Under greenhouse warming, climate models project a decrease in WTIO SST variability, suggesting that the reduced impact on Antarctic sea ice from the IOD will likely to continue, facilitating a fast decline of Antarctic sea ice.

Observational Evidence for a Regime Shift in Summer Antarctic Sea Ice

Abstract In recent years, the Southern Ocean has experienced extremely low sea ice cover in multiple summers. These low events were preceded by a multidecadal positive trend that culminated in record high ice coverage in 2014. This abrupt transition has led some authors to suggest that Antarctic sea ice has undergone a regime shift. In this study we analyze the satellite sea ice record and atmospheric reanalyses to assess the evidence for such a shift. We find that the standard deviation of the summer sea ice record has doubled from 0.31 million km2 in 1979–2006 to 0.76 million km2 for 2007–22. This increased variance is accompanied by a longer season-to-season sea ice memory. The atmosphere is the primary driver of Antarctic sea ice variability, but using a linear predictive model we show that sea ice changes cannot be explained by the atmosphere alone. Identifying whether a regime shift has occurred is difficult without a complete understanding of the physical mechanism of change. However, the statistical changes that we demonstrate (i.e., increased variance and autocorrelation, and a changed response to atmospheric forcing), as well as the increased spatial coherence noted by previous research, are indicators based on dynamical systems theory of an abrupt critical transition. Thus, our analysis is further evidence in support of a changed Antarctic sea ice system. Significance Statement In recent years, there have been several summers with extremely low Antarctic sea ice cover, including consecutive record lows in February 2022 and February 2023. Since then, the 2023 winter has seen a remarkably low sea ice growth with an anomaly far below expected climatology. This has led researchers to question whether there has been a regime shift, and we assess the observational evidence for such a shift. In the last decade or so, the variability of summer sea ice has almost doubled, accompanied by a much longer sea ice memory from season to season. These statistical changes, as well an increased spatial coherence noted by other researchers, are consistent with theoretical indicators of a critical transition, or regime shift.

Combined Impacts of Southern Annular Mode and Zonal Wave 3 on Antarctic Sea Ice Variability

Abstract Large-scale modes of atmospheric variability in the southern midlatitudes can influence Antarctic sea ice concentrations (SIC) via diverse processes. For instance, variability in both the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and zonal wave 3 (ZW3) have been linked to the abrupt 2015/16 sea ice decline. While SIC responses to each of SAM and ZW3 have been examined previously, their interaction and synchronous impact on Antarctic sea ice has not. Here, we investigate SAM/ZW3 interactions and their associated combined impacts on Antarctic sea ice using a 1200-yr simulation from a state-of-the-art climate model. Our results suggest that zonal wind anomalies associated with SAM drive SIC anomalies in the marginal ice-zone via advection of ice normal to the ice edge and Ekman drift. In contrast, meridional wind anomalies associated with ZW3 can have opposing dynamic and thermodynamic effects on SIC. Both SAM- and ZW3-related SIC anomalies propagate eastward, likely by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The interaction of SAM and ZW3 leads to interesting regional SIC responses. During negative SAM, ZW3-associated meridional wind anomalies across western Antarctica are closer to the ice edge and have a stronger impact on sea ice overall. ZW3 phase affects meridional wind anomalies across the whole ice edge, whereas it affects SIC anomalies mainly over western Antarctica. In parts of eastern Antarctica, SIC anomalies are less sensitive to ZW3 phase, but are sensitive to SAM, particularly in locations where the ice edge has a prominent angle relative to the SAM-related zonal wind anomalies. Significance Statement The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and zonal wave 3 (ZW3) are large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns affecting midlatitude east–west and north–south winds, respectively, over the Southern Ocean. Variations in winds can affect sea ice formation, which can feed back to influence Southern Hemisphere climate. We examine how variations in SAM and ZW3 affect Antarctic sea ice due to a combination of wind- and ocean-driven ice movement and sea ice growth or melting. Regional variations in ice concentrations are due both to alternating north–south ZW3 winds and to the interaction of SAM-related east–west winds with the ice edge. SAM and ZW3 can also interact, leading to stronger north–south wind and sea ice responses over western Antarctica when SAM-related midlatitude winds weaken.

Multidecadal variability and predictability of Antarctic sea ice in the GFDL SPEAR_LO model

Abstract. Using a state-of-the-art coupled general circulation model, physical processes underlying Antarctic sea ice multidecadal variability and predictability are investigated. Our model simulations constrained by atmospheric reanalysis and observed sea surface temperature broadly capture a multidecadal variability in the observed sea ice extent (SIE) with a low sea ice state (late 1970s–1990s) and a high sea ice state (2000s–early 2010s), although the model overestimates the SIE decrease in the Weddell Sea around the 1980s. The low sea ice state is largely due to the deepening of the mixed layer and the associated deep convection that brings subsurface warm water to the surface. During the high sea ice period (post-2000s), the deep convection substantially weakens, so surface wind variability plays a greater role in the SIE variability. Decadal retrospective forecasts started from the above model simulations demonstrate that the Antarctic sea ice multidecadal variability can be skillfully predicted 6–10 years in advance, showing a moderate correlation with the observation. Ensemble members with a deeper mixed layer and stronger deep convection tend to predict a larger sea ice decrease in the 1980s, whereas members with a larger surface wind variability tend to predict a larger sea ice increase after the 2000s. Therefore, skillful simulation and prediction of the Antarctic sea ice multidecadal variability require accurate simulation and prediction of the mixed layer, deep convection, and surface wind variability in the model.

Estimating summer sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea during the early 19th century

Abstract. Over the past 3 decades, discordant trends in sea ice extent have been observed between the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Arctic sea ice extent has been characterised by a rapid decline, whereas Antarctic sea ice extent, while highly variable interannually, has tended to increase. Climate models have so far failed to capture these trends. Coupled with the limited pre-1970 sea ice dataset, this poses a significant challenge to quantifying the mechanisms responsible for driving such trends. However, historical records from early Antarctic expeditions contain a wealth of information regarding the nature and concentration of sea ice. Such records have been underutilised, and their analysis may enhance our understanding of recent Antarctic sea ice variability. For the purpose of this study, nine records from eight Antarctic expeditions have been examined. Summer sea ice positions recorded during 1820–1843 have been compared to satellite observations from 1987–2017, as well as historical data for the period 1897–1917. Through analysis of these three time series, estimates for the northern limits of summer sea ice in the Weddell Sea during the early 19th century have been produced. The key findings of this study indicate a 19th century average core summer northernmost sea ice latitude in much of the Weddell Sea that was further north than during the modern era, with 19th century February having significantly more sea ice by all measures. However, late summer sea ice was most extensive in the early years of the 20th century.

Antarctic sea ice variability linked to three dipole modes of subtropical sea surface temperature in the Southern Hemisphere

AbstractBased on statistical analyses of gridded data over the past four decades (1979–2020), we examined the teleconnection between the variability of the Antarctic sea ice and the leading modes of subtropical sea surface temperature (SST) variability known as the Indian Ocean subtropical dipole (IOSD), the South Atlantic subtropical dipole (SASD) and the South Pacific subtropical dipole (SPSD). We show that the pattern and strength of the teleconnection differ with the SST modes. For each mode, while the regional distributions of significant Antarctic sea ice anomalies are broadly similar throughout the year, the areal extent and the magnitudes of the anomalies display a strong seasonality. Larger areas and magnitudes of significant sea ice anomalies occur in austral winter for the SASD, autumn and spring for the SPSD and non‐summer seasons for the IOSD. We demonstrate that the spatial and seasonal variations of the sea ice anomalies associated with each of the three subtropical SST variability modes are largely consistent with the patterns of the anomalous temperature advection and sea ice transport by the anomalous atmospheric circulations induced by planetary wavetrains that are triggered by anomalous convective activities over different regions of subtropical oceans. These relationships between subtropical SST modes and Antarctic sea ice may serve as a valuable reference for predicting seasonal to interannual scale variations of Antarctic sea ice concentrations across each austral season.

The Impacts of Combined SAM and ENSO on Seasonal Antarctic Sea Ice Changes

Abstract Both the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are critical factors contributing to Antarctic sea ice variability on interannual time scales. However, their joint effects on sea ice are complex and remain unclear for each austral season. In this study, satellite sea ice concentration (SIC) observations and atmospheric reanalysis data are utilized to assess the impacts of combined SAM and ENSO on seasonal Antarctic sea ice changes. The joint SAM–ENSO impacts on southern high latitudes are principally controlled by the strength and position of the wave activity and associated atmospheric circulation anomalies affected by their interactions. In-phase events (La Niña/positive SAM and El Niño/negative SAM) are characterized with an SIC dipole located in the Weddell/Bellingshausen Seas and Amundsen/Ross Seas, while out-of-phase events (El Niño/positive SAM and La Niña/negative SAM) experience significant SIC anomalies in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. Sea ice budget analyses are conducted to separate the dynamic and thermodynamic contributions inducing the sea ice intensification anomalies. The results show that in-phase intensification anomalies also display a pattern similar to the SIC dipole and are mainly driven by the direct thermodynamic forcing at the ice edge and thermodynamic responses to meridional sea ice drift in the inner pack, especially in autumn and winter. Dynamic processes caused by zonal sea ice drift also play an important role during out-of-phase conditions in addition to the same mechanisms during in-phase conditions.

Atmospheric controls on the Terra Nova Bay polynya occurrence in Antarctica

Polynyas, or ice-free regions within the sea ice pack, are a common occurrence around Antarctica. A recurrent and often large polynya is the Terra Nova Bay Polynya (TNBP), located on the western side of the Ross Sea just off Victoria Land. In this study, we investigate the atmospheric conditions leading to the occurrence of the TNBP and its spatial variability, as estimated using satellite-derived ice surface temperature and sea ice concentration data. A cluster analysis revealed that katabatic winds descending the Transantarctic Mountains, account for about 45% of the days when the TNBP exceeded its 2010–2017 mean extent plus one standard deviation. Warmer and more moist air intrusions from lower-latitudes from the Pacific Ocean, which are favoured in the negative phase of the Southern Annular Mode, play a role in its expansion in the remaining days. This is more frequent in the transition seasons, when such events are more likely to reach Antarctica and contribute to the occurrence and the widening of the polynya. In-situ weather data confirmed the effects of the mid-latitude air intrusions, while sea ice drifts of up to 25 km day−1 cleared the ice offshore and promoted the widening of the polynya starting from the coastal areas. Knowing the atmospheric factors involved in the occurrence of coastal polynyas around Antarctica is essential as it helps in improving their representation and predictability in climate models and hence advance the models’ capabilities in projecting Antarctic sea ice variability.

Remote Influences of ENSO and IOD on the Interannual Variability of the West Antarctic Sea Ice

AbstractWest Antarctica exhibits a pronounced sea ice variability in interannual timescale, and 20%–30% of the total variance can be explained by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) during austral spring. The sea ice variation is primarily linked with anomalous atmospheric circulation in the Amundsen‐Bellingshausen Sea (ABS) that modulates poleward atmospheric temperature advection and radiative forcing. With a co‐varying relationship between ENSO and IOD, isolating their remote impacts on Antarctica has been limited in observations. An idealized experiment using the atmospheric model with a dry dynamical core suggests that the anticyclonic circulation anomaly in the ABS is primarily contributed by the ENSO in the Pacific Ocean, while the contribution of the IOD in the Indian Ocean is only one‐third large. This study implies that atmospheric teleconnection through the southern Pacific Ocean is crucial for understanding the West Antarctic sea ice concentration variability.

Linking the Antarctic sea ice extent changes during 1979–2020 to seasonal modes of Antarctic sea ice variability

The Antarctic sea ice extent slowly expanded through the four-decade-long satellite era until 2014 when the expansion came to a halt, followed by a rapid contraction in the next couple of years. This sudden unexpected trend reversal has sparked considerable research interest and several mechanisms have been proposed to explain it; however, much remains to be explored. In this study, we show that the long-term increasing trend in the Antarctic sea ice extent and its recent reversal can be largely explained by the first, second and fourth empirical orthogonal function mode of sea ice variability in austral summer, autumn and spring, respectively. We illustrate that the sea ice variability represented by the three modes is mostly consistent with what is expected from the anomalous atmospheric circulations associated with planetary wavetrains that are triggered by anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) and convective activities over the Southern Indian and Pacific Oceans. More specifically, the results suggest a teleconnection between the increasing periods in the Antarctic sea ice extent in the past four decades and the positive SST anomalies over the southeastern Indian Ocean and the western tropical Pacific Ocean. The opposite occurs over the decreasing period. Accordingly, the same mechanisms, in different phases, have been associated with the periods of increasing and decreasing Antarctic sea ice extent.

The Impact of the Indian Ocean Basin Mode on Antarctic Sea Ice Concentration in Interannual Time Scales

AbstractThe Antarctic sea ice variability has been linked to tropical sea surface temperature. However, little is known as to whether and how the Indian Ocean Basin Mode (IOBM) influences Antarctic sea ice changes. We revealed the existence of a teleconnection between the IOMB and Antarctic sea ice anomalies, which is much stronger in austral spring and autumn than summer and winter. In particular, under the positive phase of the IOBM, significant positive sea ice anomalies occur in the Bellingshausen and northern Weddell Seas, in contrast to negative anomalies in the Amundsen Sea, the southern Atlantic Ocean, and the coastal seas off Dronning Maud Land. This teleconnection is established by planetary wavetrains excited over the tropical Indian Ocean and the tropical Pacific Ocean and is modulated by El Niño‐Southern Oscillation. The IOBM‐related Antarctic sea ice anomalies are largely consistent with those of the anomalous surface air temperature and wind fields associated with the IOBM.

Sea ice variability and trends in the Indian Ocean sector of Antarctica: Interaction with ENSO and SAM

Antarctic sea ice variability is primarily associated with ocean-atmospheric forcing driven by anomalous conditions over the tropical regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The ice-ocean-atmosphere dynamics in the Indian Ocean Sector (IOS) of Antarctica have been studied using monthly satellite and reanalysis observations over four decades (1979–2019). In this study, we revealed that the annual sea ice extent (SIE) in the IOS increases at a rate of 0.7 ± 0.9% decade−1, with a maximum increase in austral summer (5.9 ± 3.7% decade−1). The wavelet approach was used to determine the variability in IOS sea ice caused by the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and southern annular mode (SAM). The SIE has a significant association with both indices during the summer and autumn. In comparison to ENSO, the sea ice variability associated with SAM is typically seasonal in nature and lacks distinct patterns. The wavelet coherence analysis revealed a relatively weak relationship between ENSO and SAM but a highly significant coherence between climatic indices and SIE. We observed that sea ice in the IOS is influenced significantly by climatic oscillations during their negative SAM/El Niño or positive SAM/La Niña phases. Furthermore, the study demonstrated a substantial impact of climatic disturbances in determining the sea ice variability in the IOS.

Synchronous Variation Patterns of Monthly Sea Ice Anomalies at the Arctic and Antarctic

Abstract Sea ice variability in the opposite polar regions is examined holistically by applying the self-organizing map (SOM) method to global monthly sea ice concentration data over two periods. The results show that the variability modes of sea ice decrease in the Arctic correspond to an overall sea ice increase in the Antarctic, and vice versa. In particular, the monthly sea ice anomaly patterns are dominated by in-phase variability across the Arctic that is stronger in the marginal seas particularly the Barents Sea than the central Arctic Ocean. The corresponding Antarctic sea ice variability is characterized by a zonal wavenumber-3 structure or a dipole pattern of out-of-phase variability between the Bellingshausen/Amundsen Seas and the rest of the Southern Ocean. The frequency of occurrence of these dominant patterns exhibits pronounced seasonal as well as decadal variability and the latter is closely related to the Pacific decadal oscillation and Atlantic multidecadal oscillation. Other less frequent patterns seem to be associated with the central Pacific El Niño and spatially heterogeneous interannual variability of sea surface temperature (SST) in the Indian and the Atlantic Oceans. The dominant modes explain 57% of the four-decade domain-averaged trends in the annual polar sea ice concentration, with more explained in the eastern than western Arctic Ocean and in the Weddell Sea and the Amundsen Sea in the Antarctic. The spatial patterns of the leading modes can be largely explained by the dynamic (sea ice drift) and thermodynamic (sea ice melt) effects of the anomalous atmospheric circulations associated with SST and sea level pressure anomalies. Significance Statement The purpose of this study is to extract the main modes of monthly global sea ice concentration variability in the past four decades, explain the mechanisms behind the occurrences of these modes, and examine the contributions of these modes to the trend in annual global sea ice concentration. Sea ice extent in the past four decades has shown a significant declining trend in the Arctic and a slight, but significant increasing trend in the Antarctic. By jointly analyzing the sea ice variability and trends in the two polar regions, the results here provide a reference for what might have contributed to the opposite sea ice trends in Arctic and Antarctic and highlight the important influence of large-scale sea surface temperature anomalies on the trends in the two polar regions.

Response of southern troposphere meridional circulation to historical maxima of Antarctic sea ice.

The variability of Antarctic sea ice (ASI) has great potential to affect atmospheric circulation, with impacts that can extend from the surface to the middle and high levels of troposphere. The present study has evaluated the response of South Atlantic tropospheric circulation to increased coverage in area and volume of ASI. Monthly data of air temperature, zonal and meridional wind and mean sea level pressure were obtained from two ensemble simulations performed with the GDFL/CM2.1 model, covering the period from July 2020 to June 2030. In general, the response of South Atlantic tropospheric circulation to increased ASI showed that the climatic signal extended up from the surface to the high levels, propagating as a South Pole-Tropics teleconnection. The results show a general cooling of the southern troposphere, which for instance lead to the strengthening and northward shift of the polar jet and the southward shift of the subtropical jet and to an inversion from the positive to negative phase of the Southern Annular Mode. This study has great relevance for understanding the global climate changes in short term, by assessing the sensitivity of South Atlantic tropospheric circulation to extreme variations in ASI.

The high‐frequency variability of Antarctic sea ice and polar cold air incursions over Amazonia

AbstractThe cold air incursion over South America is associated with the frontal systems generated in the Antarctic region, and sea ice cover plays an important role in its formation. Little is known about how the high‐frequency variability of the coupled ocean–cryosphere‐atmosphere system affects weather conditions in South America, especially in the Amazon region ‐ in tandem with the largest tropical forest on the planet and a key region of the global climate system. The results presented here suggest that the high‐frequency variability of the expansion of Antarctic sea ice extent (SIE) extremes, in the Ross Sea and Indian Ocean, modulate the cold air incursion over the Amazon in the southern winter 4 and 2 days after the expansion of SIE extremes, respectively. The SIE extremes can couple with the atmosphere, inducing Rossby waves that propagate and undergo amplification downstream from the Ross Sea and Indian Ocean during such extremes. In this way, the atmospheric wave train acquires a more southern spread over South America, reaching tropical latitudes after the SIE extremes. In non‐SIE extreme periods, the atmospheric wave train has a more zonal spread and reaches only the extratropical latitudes of the continent.

Variability of Antarctic sea ice extent over the past 200 years

While Arctic sea ice has been decreasing in recent decades that is largely due to anthropogenic forcing, the extent of Antarctic sea ice showed a positive trend during 1979–2015, followed by an abrupt decrease. The shortness of the satellite record limits our ability to quantify the possible contribution of anthropogenic forcing and internal variability to the observed Antarctic sea ice variability. In this study, ice core and fast ice records with annual resolution from six sites are used to reconstruct the annual-resolved northernmost latitude of sea ice edge (NLSIE) for different sectors of the Southern Ocean, including the Weddell Sea (WS), Bellingshausen Sea (BS), Amundsen Sea (AS), Ross Sea (RS), and the Indian and western Pacific Ocean (IndWPac). The linear trends of the NLSIE are analyzed for each sector for the past 100–200 years and found to be −0.08°, −0.17°, +0.07°, +0.02°, and −0.03° per decade (≥95% confidence level) for the WS, BS, AS, RS, and IndWPac, respectively. For the entire Antarctic, our composite NLSIE shows a decreasing trend (−0.03° per decade, 99% confidence level) during the 20th century, with a rapid decline in the mid-1950s. It was not until the early 1980s that the observed increasing trend occurred. A comparison with major climate indices shows that the long-term linear trends in all five sectors are largely dominated by the changes in the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). The multi-decadal variability in WS, BS, and AS is dominated by the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation, whereas that in the IndWPac and RS is dominated by the SAM.

How Do Weakening of the Stratospheric Polar Vortex in the Southern Hemisphere Affect Regional Antarctic Sea Ice Extent?

AbstractIn the Southern Hemisphere, variability of the stratospheric polar vortex is an important driver of surface climate. In this study, we explore the influence of weakening and strengthening of the polar vortex on regional Antarctic sea ice in observations and model simulations. We propose a two‐stage mechanism that translates stratospheric harbingers to sea ice changes: (a) it starts with polar vortex variability that is highly correlated with the Amundsen Sea Low (ASL); through modulation of the ASL and thus surface winds, (b) weak polar vortex leads to statistically significant decrease of sea ice over the Ross Sea and increase of sea ice around the Antarctic Peninsula, and vice versa. The two‐stage mechanism can be detected in observations and state‐of‐the‐art model simulations, confirming a robust chain of response. This study underlines the importance of stratosphere‐troposphere coupling on the Antarctic sea ice variability and its seasonal predictability.

Synoptic mode of Antarctic summer sea ice superimposed on interannual and decadal variability

In contrast to decreased Arctic sea ice extent, Antarctic sea ice extent shows a somewhat increased trend. There is a large interannual variability of Antarctic sea ice, especially in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean. The change and variability of Antarctic sea ice in synoptic timescales in the recent decades remain unclear. We identify synoptic modes of variability of Antarctic summer sea ice by applying the Self Organizing Map (SOM) technique to daily sea ice concentration data for the period 1979–2018. Nearly 40% of the variability is characterized by opposite changes between sea ice cover in the Bellingshausen, Amundsen and western Ross Seas and in the rest of the Antarctic seas, and another 30% by meridional asymmetry in the Weddell, Amundsen, and Ross Seas. Most of these spatial patterns may be explained by the dynamics and thermodynamic processes associated with anomalous atmospheric circulations related to the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) with a structure of strong zonal asymmetry. The interannual variability of the sea ice modes appears to have little connection to SAM, and only a weak relation to ENSO. The annual frequencies of SOM node occurrences also show a great decadal variability. Node 9 appears mainly prior to 1990; while node 1 occurs mainly after 1990. The decadal variability of nodes 1 and 9 is associated with the asymmetrical SAM, which results from two wavetrains excited over northern Australia and the southeastern Indian Ocean. These results further highlight the importance of understanding the role of southern mid-to-high latitude atmospheric intrinsic variability in predicting Antarctic summer sea ice variations from synoptic to decadal timescales.

An Overview of Antarctic Sea Ice in the Community Earth System Model Version 2, Part I: Analysis of the Seasonal Cycle in the Context of Sea Ice Thermodynamics and Coupled Atmosphere‐Ocean‐Ice Processes

AbstractWe assess Antarctic sea ice climatology and variability in version 2 of the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) and compare it to that in the older CESM1 and (where appropriate) real‐world observations. In CESM2, Antarctic sea ice is thinner and less extensive than in CESM1, though sea ice area is still approximately 1 million km2 greater in CESM2 than in present‐day observations. Though there is less Antarctic sea ice in CESM2, the annual cycle of ice growth and melt is more vigorous in CESM2 than in CESM1. A new mushy layer thermodynamics formulation implemented in the latest version of the Community Ice Code (CICE) in CESM2 accounts for both greater frazil ice formation in coastal polynyas and more snow‐to‐ice conversion near the edge of the ice pack in the new model. Greater winter ice divergence in CESM2 (relative to CESM1) is due to stronger stationary wave activity and greater wind stress curl over the ice pack. Greater wind stress curl, in turn, drives more warm water upwelling under the ice pack, thinning it and decreasing its extent. Overall, differences between Antarctic sea ice in CESM2 and CESM1 arise due to both differences in their sea ice thermodynamics formulations and differences in their coupled atmosphere‐ocean states.

Attenuated Interannual Variability of Austral Winter Antarctic Sea Ice Over Recent Decades

AbstractChanges in Antarctic sea ice modify surface circulation, deep‐water formation, and overturning circulation, affecting the ecosystem and the atmosphere‐ocean‐ice interaction. Recent studies focused on long‐term trends of Antarctic sea ice, but whether its variability has changed is less clear. By examining reanalysis data sets, we show an interdecadal attenuation in variability of austral winter Antarctic sea ice since the late 1990s. This mainly arises from declined surface pressure variations in response to a combined effect of El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Compared to the pre‐1999 period, ENSO and the SAM have reduced variability in the post‐1999 period, and the linkage between them and Antarctic climate has weakened. The decreased level of variability over the 1999–2017 period may facilitate a more sensitive response of Antarctic sea ice to an external forcing, by enhancing the signal‐to‐noise ratio.
