Terminologization of Colouronyms of Metal and Mineral Etymological Origin: The Evolutionary Aspect

This paper is devoted to the study of French colouronyms and their terminologization in different subtypes of scientific discourse. The research is based on colouronyms of mineral origin “(jaune / vert / brun / rouge d’) andalousite” and “quartz (blanc / rose),” as well as those of metallic origin – “jaune d’or” and “jaune / vert de chrome.” The authors carry out an etymological analysis of all the above-mentioned lexical units and consider the main tendencies of the terminologization of words with the semantics of colour in French scientific discourse. The peculiarities of the terminologization of colouronyms of mineral origin are analysed in the chemistry and geology discourse subtypes, whereas trends in the use of colouronyms of mineral origin are presented in the chemistry and physics discourse subtypes.The aim of this paper is to analyse the evolutionary tendencies of the terminologization of French colouronyms in the subtypes of scientific discourse to describe their common and diverging properties at different levels, i.e. structural-semantic, morphological, and syntactic.The empirical material for the research comprises written scientific texts on chemistry(the Annales de chimie et de physique electronic archive of scientific journals), geology (the Planète-Terre electronic archive of scientific journals), and physics (the Futura Sciences electronic archive of scientific journals).The research methods employed include etymological, component, structural-semantic, morphological, and syntactic analyses.The terminologization of colouronyms is a long-term continuous evolutionary discursive process that can be observed in French scientific discourse from the nineteenth century until the present day. The authors investigate the evolutionary tendencies of colouronyms as emerging semantics of colour in lexemes that have not had it before, the development of new structural-semantic models, the increasing numbers of morphological categories of colour terms, the acquisition of new syntactic roles, and the gradual process of the semantic transformation of colouronyms. The transition of colouronyms from one subtype of scientific discourse into another while preserving the structural-syntactic forms and morphological and semantic categories indicates the correlation between the discursive subtypes and the convergence of their functional properties at different levels of the language system. Despite this interdiscursive connectedness, each of the subtypes manifests distinct boundaries, which can be revealed through the study of the semantic specificity of colouronyms and their terminologization in scientific discourse.Transl.: Volkova M.V. 2022. Long-time asymptotics for coagulation equations with injection that do not have stationary solutions

In this paper we study a class of coagulation equations including a source term that injects in the system clusters of size of order one. In that case, the transport of mass toward infinity is due to the collision between particles of comparable sizes. In the case γ+2λ≥1\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\gamma +2\\lambda \\ge 1$$\\end{document}, the interaction between particles of different sizes leads to an additional transport term in the coagulation equation that approximates the solution of the original coagulation equation with injection for large times. We prove the existence of a class of self-similar solutions for suitable choices of γ\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\gamma $$\\end{document} and λ\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\lambda $$\\end{document} for this class of coagulation equations with transport. We prove that for the complementary case such self-similar solutions do not exist.

Senses and Utility in the New Chemistry

The New Chemistry, as practised by its early proponents in late eighteenth-century France, is often associated with quantification and a move away from sensorial perceptions. In this paper, I argue that the sensory, far from being discarded by the practitioners of the New Chemistry, thrived in one of their major productions: the Annales de Chimie. Viewing the New Chemistry through its relation to the sensory highlights the diversity of chemical applications and offers a new way of examining the connection of chemistry to state and industrial actors. Chemists utilised a precise vocabulary which allowed them to productively interact on the subject of the senses. Sensorial impressions were used for distinct purposes, including the identification of substances, and to track the progress of ongoing chemical transformations. Most important, the senses were frequently tied to the purpose of chemical work. As chemists put their expertise in support of the state, industry, medicine, and commerce, they aimed to improve the sensory qualities of their objects of study, be they dairy products or fabric dyes. Remaining attuned to the senses, therefore, was an essential prerequisite of the New Chemistry's claim to utility.

Geometric optics expansion for weakly well-posed hyperbolic boundary value problem: The glancing degeneracy

This article aims to finalize the classification of weakly well-posed hyperbolic boundary value problems in the half-space. Such problems with loss of derivatives are rather classical in the literature and appear for example in (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 101 (1988) 261–292) or (In Analyse Mathématique et Applications (1988) 319–356 Gauthier-Villars). It is known that depending on the kind of the area of the boundary of the frequency space on which the uniform Kreiss–Lopatinskii condition degenerates then the energy estimate can include different losses. The three first possible areas of degeneracy have been studied in (Annales de l’Institut Fourier 60 (2010) 2183–2233) and (Differential Integral Equations 27 (2014) 531–562) by the use of geometric optics expansions. In this article we use the same kind of tools in order to deal with the last remaining case, namely a degeneracy in the glancing area. In comparison to the first cases studied we will see that the equation giving the amplitude of the leading order term in the expansion, and thus initializing the whole construction of the expansion, is not a transport equation anymore but it is given by some Fourier multiplier. This multiplier needs to be invert in order to recover the first amplitude. As an application we discuss the existing estimates of (Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst., Ser. B 23 (2018) 1347–1361; SIAM J. Math. Anal. 44 (2012) 1925–1949) for the wave equation with Neumann boundary condition.

Rebuttal to G.D’Abramo Paper “Astronomical Distances and Velocities and Special Relativity”

In a recent paper published in the Annales de la Fondation Louis de Brogle. G.D’Abramo analyses several aspects of special relativity, including the well-known relativistic muon experiments. In the abstract, mr. D’Abramo states that: “We shall do that by providing a reanalysis of the so-called Andromeda paradox and by revisiting the standard explanation of the muon lifetime dilation given when this phenomenon is observed from muon’s perspective”. In the following note we will expose a basic misunderstanding in mr. D’Abramo when it comes to the explanations of the muon lifetime and to Andromeda paradox.

Asymptotic $N$-soliton-like solutions of the fractional Korteweg–de Vries equation

We construct N -soliton solutions for the fractional Korteweg–de Vries (fKdV) equation \partial_t u - \partial_x(|D|^{\alpha}u - u^2 )=0, in the whole sub-critical range \alpha \in(1/2,2) . More precisely, if Q_c denotes the ground state solution associated to (fKdV) evolving with velocity c , then, given 0&lt;c_1&lt; \cdots &lt; c_N , we prove the existence of a solution U of (fKdV) satisfying \lim_{t\to\infty} \Big\lVert U(t,\cdot) - \sum_{j=1}^N Q_{c_j}(x-\rho_j(t)) \Big\|_{H^{{\alpha}/2}}=0, where \rho'_{j}(t) \sim c_j as t \to +\infty . The proof adapts the construction of Martel in the generalized KdV setting [Amer. J. Math. 127 (2005), pp. 1103–1140] to the fractional case. The main new difficulties are the polynomial decay of the ground state Q_c and the use of local techniques (monotonicity properties for a portion of the mass and the energy) for a non-local equation. To bypass these difficulties, we use symmetric and non-symmetric weighted commutator estimates. The symmetric ones were proved by Kenig, Martel and Robbiano [Annales de l’IHP Analyse Non Linéaire 28 (2011), pp. 853–887], while the non-symmetric ones seem to be new.

Large deviation principle for a class of stochastic hydrodynamical type systems driven by multiplicative Lévy noises

This article is devoted to the large deviation principle for a wide class of stochastic hydrodynamical systems driven by multiplicative Lévy noise. The model covers many equations arising form fluid dynamics such as 2D Navier-Stokes equations, 2D MHD models and the 2D magnetic Bénard problem and also shell models of turbulence. The main difficulty in proving the large deviation principle for the system is overcame by using the weak convergence method introduced by Budhiraja, Dupuis and Maroulas (Ann. Probab. 36: 1390–1420, 2008 and Annales De L Institut Henri Poincare. 47: 725–747, 2011).

In search of lost fleas: reconsidering Paul-Louis Simond’s contribution to the study of the propagation of plague

AbstractPaul-Louis Simond’s 1898 experiment demonstrating fleas as the vector of plague is today recognised as one of the breakthrough moments in modern epidemiology, as it established the insect-borne transmission of plague. Providing the first exhaustive examination of primary sources from the Institut Pasteur’s 1897–98 ‘India Mission’, including Simond’s notebooks, experiment carnets and correspondence, and cross-examining this material with colonial medical sources from the first years of the third plague pandemic in British India, the article demonstrates that Simond’s engagement with the question of the propagation of plague was much more complex and ambiguous than the teleological story reproduced in established historical works suggests. On the one hand, the article reveals that the famous 1898 experiment was botched, and that Simond’s misreported its ambiguous findings for the Annales de l’Institut Pasteur. On the other hand, the article shows that, in the course of his ‘India Mission’, Simond framed rats as involved in the propagation of plague irreducibly in their relation to other potential sources of infection and not simply in terms of a parasitological mechanism. The article illuminates Simond’s complex epidemiological reasoning about plague transmission, situating it within its proper colonial and epistemological context, and argues for a new historical gaze on the rat as an ‘epidemiological dividual’, which highlights the relational and contingent nature of epidemiological framings of the animal during the third plague pandemic.

Psilocybin in the treatment of anorexia nervosa: The English transition of a French 1959 case study

Psilocybin is a psychotropic molecule that is a partial agonist of serotonin 2A receptors and is the main psychoactive compound in hallucinogenic mushrooms. After the observation in 1953 in Mexico of ritual practices involving ingestion of such mushrooms, psilocybin was chemically characterized and synthesized in 1958 thanks to the collaboration between the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in France and the Sandoz pharmaceutical laboratories in Switzerland. The interest of this substance in psychiatric therapy was then evaluated for the first time at the Sainte-Anne Hospital in Paris, by the team of Professor Jean Delay. Among the patients who received this substance was a 35-year-old woman who was hospitalized for compulsive manifestations emblematic of anorexia nervosa and who experienced an immediate and lasting improvement. The original 1959 article (published in the Annales de la Société Médico-Psychologique) gives details of the patient's family background, biography and clinical examination. It then outlines the observations after two injections of psilocybin four days apart, in particular the autobiographical verbal statements that allowed the patient to understand the psychogenesis of her illness. After a long hiatus, psilocybin is once again the subject of medical research, with clinical trials now underway assessing psilocybin in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (NCT04505189; NCT04052568; NCT04661514) and this 1959 case study, is the first known demonstration of the safety and efficacy of psilocybin treatment of anorexia nervosa. This case study thus provides an interesting insight into possible therapeutic mechanisms and is of great interest to the field moving forward.

Recommendations for the application and follow-up of quality controls in medical laboratories

This is a translation of the paper “Recommendations for the application and follow-up of quality controls in medical biology laboratories” published in French in the journal Annales de Biologie Clinique (Recommandations pour la mise en place et le suivi des contrôles de qualité dans les laboratoires de biologie médicale. Ann Biol Clin (Paris). 2019;77:577-97.). The recommendations proposed in this document are the result of work conducted jointly by the Network of Accredited Medical Laboratories (LABAC), the French Society of Medical Biology (SFBC) and the Federation of Associations for External Quality Assessment (FAEEQ). The different steps of the implementation of quality controls, based on a risk analysis, are described. The changes of reagent or internal quality control (IQC) materials batches, the action to be taken in case of non-conform IQC results, the choice of external quality assessment (EQA) scheme and interpretation of their results as well as the new issue of analyses performed on several automatic systems available in the same laboratory are discussed. Finally, the concept of measurement uncertainty, the robustness of the methods as well as the specificities of near-patient testing and rapid tests are described. These recommendations cannot apply for all cases we can find in medical laboratories. The implementation of an objective alternative strategy, supported with documented evidence, might be equally considered.

Johan Jacob Nervander and the Quantification of Electric Current [Historically Speaking

This article focuses on the developments in electromagnetism during the early 19th century. The discovery of electromagnetism by Hans Christian Orsted, in 1820, was a gamechanging event that opened perspectives into the deep understanding of physics and fundamental technical applications. In this article, the principles to measure and quantify electric current are given particular attention. Several scientists, including Schweigger, Poggendorff, Nobili, and Pouillet, contributed to the development of an instrument toward this purpose, the galvanometer. Here, we put special emphasis on research by Johan Jacob Nervander, whose tangentbussol, presented to l'Institut de France, in spring 1834, and later published in Annales de Chimie et de Physique, was a significant milestone in the instrumentation of electrical engineering.

Some comments on the production of a legitimate artificial abortion by scraping

Recently, two works have appeared in the Russian medical literature, treating about scooping or scraping as a method for producing a legitimate artificial miscarriage: part of the pr., I. Lvov), and part of the pr., A. A. Muratov). Both of these authors refer to an article by Dr. P. Puech, entitled: "Du Curettage comme mthode d'avortement artificiel", published in the August book of Annales de Gyncologie et d'obsttr. for 1895. Within the meaning of this reference, one may think that Puech was the first to recommend this method in print as an independent one and pointed out its advantages over all other methods practiced before to induce an artificial abortion. Lvov (1. p.), Says: True, many other authors resorted to removing the fetal egg from the uterus with a sharp or blunt spoon, but they resorted to this method not on their own, but accidentally, as an auxiliary technique when it was impossible to remove fertile eggs in another way. "

Apidologie 50 years

Since its foundation, Apidologie has steadily gained recognition as a journal that reports results from high-quality scientific research on the biology of bees, and this means Apidae in general, not only on its most prominent species, the Western honey bee, Apis mellifera. All started 50 years ago in a conversation between two eminent scientists, Jean Louveaux, director of one of INRA’s bee research unit in Bures-sur-Yvette and editor of the French Annales de l’Abeille, and Friedrich Ruttner, director of the Bee Research Institute in Oberursel and editor of the German Zeitschrift für Bienenforschung, where they discussed the possibility of merging these two journals to create an international bee research journal. Here, we take Apidologie’s 50th anniversary as an opportunity to provide our readers with background information on the journal’s history, especially on the persons and their contributions along this journey.

Enriched Finite Volume Approximations of the Plane-Parallel Flow at a Small Viscosity

We investigate viscous boundary layers of the plane-parallel flow, governed by the stationary Navier–Stokes equations under a certain symmetry. Following the analysis in Gie et al. (Annales de l’Institut Henri Poincare C. Analyse Non Lineaire, 2018), we first construct the so-called corrector, which is an analytic approximation of the velocity vector field near the boundary. Then, by embedding the corrector function into the classical Finite Volume schemes, we construct the semi-analytic enriched Finite Volume schemes for the plane-parallel flow, and numerically verify that our new enriched schemes reduce significantly the computational error of classical schemes especially near the boundary, and hence produce more accurate approximations without introducing any finer mesh near the boundary.

On Foliations by Curves with Singularities of Positive Dimension

We present enumerative results for holomorphic foliations by curves on $\mathbb {P}^{n}$, n ≥ 3, with singularities of positive dimension. Some of the results presented improve previous ones due to Correa et al. (Annales de l’institut Fourier, 64(4):1781–1805, 2014) and Costa (Ann Fac Sci Toulouse, Math (6), 15(2):297–321, 2006). We also present an enumerative result bounding the number of isolated singularities in a projective subvariety invariant by a holomorphic foliation by curves on $\mathbb {P}^{n}$ with a singularity of positive dimension. Moreover, we construct a family of holomorphic foliations by curves on $\mathbb {P}^{n}$ with a singularity of a positive dimension where its Milnor number is exhibited.

Pseudo-Differential Operators in Hölder Spaces Revisited: Weyl–Hörmander Calculus and Ruzhansky–Turunen Classes

In this work, we obtain continuity results on Holder spaces for operators belonging to a Weyl–Hormander calculus for metrics such that the class of the associated operators contains, in particular, certain hypoelliptic laplacians. With our results we recover some historical Holder boundedness theorems (see Beals in Annales de l’institut Fourier 29(3):239–260, 1979; Lp and Holder estimates for pseudodifferential operators: necessary conditions. In: Harmonic analysis in Euclidean spaces (proceedings of symposia in pure mathematics, Williams College, Williamstown, MA, 1978). American Mathematical Society, Providence, pp 153–157, 1979). The action of (periodic) Ruzhansky–Turunen classes of pseudo-differential operators on Holder spaces also will be investigated.

The $$\partial {\bar{\partial }}$$-Problem for Extensible Currents Defined in a Ring

In this paper, we solve the \(\partial \bar{\partial }\)-problem for extensible currents defined on \({\mathbb{C}}^{n}{\setminus } \bar{B}\) where B is the unit ball of \({\mathbb{C}}^{n}\). For that, we first solve the equation \(dS=T\) where T is an extendable current defined on \({\mathbb{C}}^{n}{\setminus }\bar{B}\). The resulting solution decomposes without loss of generality into a part \(\bar{\partial }\)-closed and \(\partial\)-closed. The set \({\mathbb{C}}^{n} {\setminus } \bar{B}\) has the geometrical conditions necessary for the resolution of \(\partial\) and \(\bar{\partial }\) for extensible currents (see Sambou in Annales de la Faculte des sciences de Toulouse 6e serie, tome 11(1):105–129, 2002). Starting from results known from de Rham cohomology and the convex analogue (see Bodian et al. in C R Math Rep Acad Sci Canada 38:34–37, 2016 and Bodian et al. in Imhotep Math J 3(1):1–4, 2018), then the equation \(dS=T\) admits a solution. The \(\partial \bar{\partial }\) solution then becomes a consequence of the results of the solution of the \(\bar{\partial }\) for the extensible currents obtained in Sambou (Annales de la Faculte des sciences de Toulouse 6e serie, tome 11(1):105–129, 2002). In the case of a manifold, we introduce the notion of contractible extension and then we solve the \(\partial \bar{\partial }\) in this context.

On a new synonymy in genus Laemostenus concerning a species from Iran (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Sphodrini).

In 2018 the authors A. Casale D.W. Wrase described Laemostenus (Arabosphodrus) laserae as new for science from South Iran (Province of Hormozgan) in Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N.S.), 54 (4), 309-317. This paper was also published online on 31 July 2018 (datum already confirmed by ZooBank on 15 July 2018) (http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:0962027A-E245-41B3-80F3-F8C32B8D3D44), and as printed copy in this international widespread journal with date of publication "May-July 2018". The description was based on a long series of specimens collected in 2015.
