Parameter Analysis of Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis System by Numerical Simulation

Anion exchange membrane electrolysis, which combines the advantages of both alkaline electrolysis and proton-exchange membrane electrolysis, is a promising technology to reduce the cost of hydrogen production. The present work focused on the study of the electrochemical phenomena of AEM electrolysis and the investigation of the key factors of the AEM hydrogen production system. The numerical model is established according to electrochemical reactions, polarization phenomena, and the power consumption of the balance of plant components of the system. The effects of operation parameters, including the temperature and hydrogen pressure of the electrolyzer, electrolyte concentration, and hydrogen supply pressure on the energy efficiency are studied. The basic electrochemical phenomena of AEM water electrolysis cells are analyzed by simulations of reversible potential and activation, and ohmic and concentration polarizations. The results reveal that increasing the operating temperature and hydrogen production pressure of the AEM electrolyzer has positive effects on the system’s efficiency. By conducting an optimization analysis of the electrolyzer temperature—which uses the heat energy generated by the electrochemical reaction of the electrolyzer to minimize the power consumption of the electrolyte pump and heater—the AEM system with an electrolyzer operating at 328 K and 30 bar can deliver hydrogen of pressure up to 200 bar under an energy efficiency of 56.4%.

Highly Active NiRu/C Cathode Catalyst Synthesized by Displacement Reaction for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis.

Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is highly promising for cost-effective green hydrogen production due to its basic operating conditions facilitating the use of non-noble catalysts. While non-noble Ni/Fe-based catalysts are utilized at the anode, its cathode catalyst still requires precious Pt. Due to the high cost of Pt and the sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode in basic conditions, developing alternative catalysts to replace Pt is highly important. Here, a synthesis procedure for a Ru-based catalyst is reported and its high activity toward the HER in alkaline media is demonstrated in both half-cell and single-cell tests. The catalyst is synthesized in a two-step approach. A highly dispersed Ni catalyst is prepared on carbon support in the first step. In the second step, Ru is deposited on its surface using a galvanic displacement reaction. The uniqueness of this method is that Ru is deposited over the entire electrically conductive surface, resulting in an isotropic and homogeneous Ru distribution within the catalyst powder. It is demonstrated that this material remarkably outperforms state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts in half-cell and single-cell tests. The single cell only requires 1.73V at 1A cm-2 with an overall PGM content of 0.05mg cm-2.

Bamboo-Like Carbon Nanotube-Encapsulated Fe2C Nanoparticles Activate Confined Fe2O3 Nanoclusters Via d-p-d Orbital Coupling for Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

The efficient anion exchange membrane water electrolysis is challenging with low cell voltage and long-term stability at large current density, due to the unstable anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Fe-based electrocatalysts are potential candidates for the anodic OER. In Fe-based materials, iron oxides always show better stability in alkaline solution but lower OER activity. However, the catalysts in previous study are difficult to continuously and effectively activate iron oxides supported on carbon during electrocatalysis. Herein, a new class of electrocatalyst: bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (B-CNT)-encapsulated Fe2C nanoparticles (NPs) supported Fe2O3 nanoclusters (NCs), named Fe2O3/B-CNT@Fe2C is reported. Theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal that B-CNT-encapsulate Fe2C NPs activate Fe2O3 NCs by the d-p-d orbital coupling, thereby weakening the adsorption of OOH* intermediate during OER process. The electrolyzer based on the electrocatalyst requires only 1.48 V to reach 1.0 A cm-2 and shows a long-term stability at 1.0 A cm-2 for 1600 h, comparable to the best-reported values for the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE).

3D-stacked electrospun iron-doped nickel cobalt oxide nanofibers as integrated electrodes for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

The commercialization of anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) requires the development of highly active, stable, and cheap anode catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we proposed electrospun iron-doped NiCo2O4 (NCO) nanofibers on nickel foam (NF) and evaluated the performances of the resulting samples (FeX-NCO/NF; X = iron loading in NCO (0, 5, 10, and 15 at %)) as unitized anodes for the OER. Among the fabricated electrodes, Fe10-NCO/NF exhibited the lowest overpotential of 352 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm−2 in a half-cell test owing to its improved intrinsic activity. In an AEMWE single-cell test, Fe10-NCO/NF as anode showed high current density (932 mA cm-2 at 1.8 V) and long-term stability for 150 h The improved AEMWE performance of Fe10-NCO/NF was attributed to efficient mass transport enabled by superhydrophilic three-dimensional porous structure featuring stacked nanofibers.

Surface-Reconstructed CdNNi3 Antiperovskite Electrocatalyst: Unlocking Ampere-Level Current Density for Hydrogen Evolution.

Developing conductive electrocatalysts is crucial for decreasing the ohmic loss induced by electric resistance of the catalyst layer in the large-current-density hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which has been overlooked previously. In this study, we screen a highly conductive antiperovskite CdNNi3 with negligible ohmic loss, as a highly active and durable HER electrocatalyst capable of unlocking ampere-scale current densities. CdNNi3 exhibits an impressive activity (an overpotential of 235 mV) at 1 A cm-2 and maintains its performance steadily at an ampere-scale current density (at 1 A cm-2 over 400 h). Besides, the CdNNi3-enabled anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer outperforms that of the benchmark Pt/C, evidenced by a reduced cell voltage of 160 mV at 1 A cm-2, and presents a favorable stability at 1 A cm-2. Importantly, this study experimentally discovers the dynamic surface reconstruction phenomena of antiperovskite nitrides during alkaline HER. Theoretical analysis suggests that the presence of Cd in the reconstructed surface effectively adjusts the local electronic configuration of active sites, which promotes the adsorption of OH and reduces the binding strength to H, thereby facilitating the water dissociation step and reducing the energy barrier of the potential-determining step in the HER process.

The sluggish reaction kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the inadequate catalytic performance of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts represent substantial barriers to the development of anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). This study performed the synthesis of a three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower-like electrocatalyst (CFMO) via a simple one-step method. The substitution of Co with Fe in the structure induces a localized oxide path mechanism (LOPM), facilitating direct O-O radical coupling for enhanced O2 evolution. The optimized CFMO-2 electrocatalyst demonstrates superior OER performance, achieving an overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm-2, alongside exceptional long-term stability with minimal degradation after 1000 h of operation in 1.0 M KOH. These properties surpass most of conventional noble metal-based electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the assembled AEMWE system, utilizing CFMO-2, operates with a cell voltage of 1.65 V to deliver 1.0 A cm-2. In situ characterizations reveal that, in addition to the traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) at isolated Co sites, a new LOPM occurred around the Fe and Co bimetallic sites. First-principles calculations confirm the LOPM greatly reduced the energy barriers. This work highlights the potential of LOPM for improving the design of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts and the development of AEMWE.

Ether-Free Alkaline Polyelectrolytes for Water Electrolyzers: Recent Advances and Perspectives.

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) have attracted great interest for their potential as sustainable, environmentally friendly, low-cost sources of renewable energy. Alkaline polyelectrolytes play a crucial role in AEMWEs, determining their performance and longevity. Because heteroatom-containing polymers have been shown to have poor durability in alkaline conditions, this review focuses on ether-free alkaline polyelectrolytes, which are more chemically stable. The merits, weaknesses, and challenges in preparing ether-free AEMs are summarized and highlighted. The evaluation of synthesis methods for polymers, modification strategies, and cationic stability will provide insights valuable for the structural design of future alkaline polyelectrolytes. Moreover, the in-situ degradation mechanisms of AEMs and ionomers during AEMWE operation are revealed. This review provides insights into the design of alkaline polyelectrolytes for AEMWEs to accelerate their widespread commercialization.

Intermittent polarity inversion of stainless-steel paired electrodes for efficient and durable water electrolysis

Designing robust and cost-effective catalysts through straightforward and replicable techniques is crucial for advancing water electrolysis. In this study, we introduce a dynamic polarization control method for the continuous activation of stainless steel (SS) substrates to achieve high water-splitting performance and durability. By applying periodic inverted current density during high-current–density operation (0.5 or 1 A cm−2) on bare SS adopted as both cathode and anode substrates, a NiFe-based oxide structure favorable for the hydrogen evolution reaction is formed at the cathode, while a Fe-incorporated NiOOH structure with high efficacy for the oxygen evolution reaction develops at the anode. Implemented in an anion exchange membrane water electrolysis system, this inverted polarization approach applied for the SS paired electrolyzer system successfully maintains a cell voltage of approximately 1.9 V for 500 h at a current density of 1 A cm−2 using bare SS for both electrodes.

Novel Large-scale Integrated Non-Precious Metal Electrodes for Efficient and Stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction at High Current Density in 2.5 kW Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

The utilization of non-precious catalysts to substitute precious metal catalysts on anode side under high current density conditions and with long-term resistance is crucial for the implementation of alkaline anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) applications. To accommodate industrial applications, a combination of chemical solution and electrodeposition was used to construct NiFeCo layered double hydroxide and NiS nanosheet heterostructures on Ni foam (NiFeCo LDH/NiS/NF). Both experiments and theoretical calculations show that the heterogeneous structure reduces the activation energy barrier of the catalytic reaction and provides an appropriate electronic structure. This not only guarantees the exposure of the active site but also adjusts the local coordination environment and chemisorption properties. Consequently, the reduction in energy barrier affects the rate-determining step (RDS) from *O to *OOH, as well as the energy barriers of all four steps in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Consequently, the optimized NiFeCo LDH/NiS/NF catalyst demonstrates a low voltage of 288mV to operate 1.0Acm-2. Additionally, the catalyst was conducted with commercial Pt/C coated onto carbon paper (Pt/C/CP) for 2×2 cm2 AEMWE exhibited 1.63V cell voltag to attain 1Acm−2 and operated for 2100h from 1Acm-2 to 2.5Acm-2 (1.69V to 1.92V). Further, the catalyst was prepared scalable to 15×15 cm2 for application into a 2.5kW AEMWE device, which required only 1.77V at 60 °C to catch 1Acm-2 for 1000h, which shows extremally promising application for stable AEMWE device.

Tantalum-induced reconstruction of nickel sulfide for enhanced bifunctional water splitting: Separate activation of the lattice oxygen oxidation and hydrogen spillover

Designing highly active and stable bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline conditions is crucial for sustainable overall water splitting. Herein, we present a targeted reconstruction of Ni3S2 by introducing tantalum, achieving remarkable overall water splitting performance through the separate activation of the lattice oxygen mechanism and hydrogen spillover. Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry and in-situ Raman spectroscopy reveal that tantalum induces Ni3S2 to reconstruct into nickel hydroxide during OER, thereby enhancing catalytic activity via the activation of the lattice oxygen mechanism. In the corresponding HER, tantalum promotes the reconstruction of Ni3S2 into oxysulfide, facilitates hydrogen spillover, and acts as an anchor to shorten the spillover distance, improving the HER catalytic performance, as verified by the kinetic isotope effect and theoretical calculations. Therefore, the catalyst-based anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer system achieves a current density of 1 A cm−2 at just 1.97 V, maintaining continuous operation for 500 h. This study offers new insights into the design of bifunctional catalysts, advancing the development of efficient and robust overall water splitting catalysts.

Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance of NiMoO4/Carbon Paper Electrocatalysts in Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis by Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma Jet Treatment.

NiMoO4 was grown on carbon paper (CP) by a hydrothermal method. A rapid and high-temperature atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (APPJ) process was used to generate more oxygen-deficient NiMoO4 on the CP surface to serve as an electrode material for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). After 60 s of APPJ treatment, the overpotential of the electrode at 100 mA/cm2 decreased to 790 mV and that at 10 mA/cm2 decreased to 368 mV. Additionally, the charge transfer resistance decreased from 2.8 to 1.2 Ω, indicating that APPJ treatment effectively reduced the electrode overpotential and impedance. The effect of NiMoO4/CP/APPJ-60 s on the anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) system was also tested. At a system temperature of 70 °C and current density of 100 mA/cm2, the energy efficiency reached 95.1%, and the specific energy consumption decreased from 4.02 to 3.83 kWh/m3. These results demonstrate that the APPJ-treated NiMoO4/CP electrode can effectively enhance the OER performance in water electrolysis and improve the energy efficiency of the AEMWE system. This approach shows promise in replacing precious metal electrodes, thereby potentially reducing the cost and providing an environmentally friendly alternative.

Continuous lattice oxygen participation of NiFe stack anode for Sustainable water Splitting

Non-noble anode catalysts exhibit insufficient activity and stability for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). Accordingly, we propose an electrolyte additive strategy involving NiFe-layered double hydroxide. In situ Raman spectroscopy and 18O isotope labeling experiments reveal that Fe ions in the electrolyte change the oxygen evolution reaction mechanism from adsorbate evolution to the lattice oxygen participation mechanism (LOM). These Fe ions continuously refill Fe vacancies owing to facile metal dissolution via the LOM. In a unit cell, we achieve an excellent cell voltage of 1.73 V and energy conversion efficiency (ECE) of 69.4 % at 3.0 A cm−2, meeting the target set by the U.S. Department of Energy (1.80 V and 69.0 % ECE). Our optimized membrane electrode assembly enhances the cell activity (1.567 V at 1.0 A cm−2; ECE = 76.5 %) and stability (0.125 mVcell h−1 at 0.5 A cm−2 for 500 h) with a 100 cm2 AEMWE stack.

Origin of Enhanced Oxygen Evolution in Restructured Metal–Organic Frameworks for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

AbstractMetal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs), praised for structural flexibility and tunability, are prominent catalyst prototypes for exploring oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Yet, their intricate transformations under OER, especially in industrial high‐current environments, pose significant challenges in accurately elucidating their structure–activity correlation. Here, we harnessed an electrooxidation process for controllable MOF reconstruction, discovering that Fe doping expedites Ni(Fe) MOF structural evolution, accompanied by the elongation of Ni−O bonds, monitored by in situ Raman and UV/Visible spectroscopy. Theoretical modeling further reveals that Fe doping and defect‐induced tensile strain in the NiO6 octahedra augments the metal ds‐O p hybridization, optimizing their adsorption behavior and augmenting OER activity. The reconstructed Ni(Fe) MOF, serving as the anode in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis, achieves a noteworthy current density of 3300 mA cm−2 at 2.2 V while maintaining equally stable operation 500 mA cm−2 for 300 h and 1000 mA cm−2 for 170 h. This undertaking elevates our comprehension of OER catalyst reconstruction, furnishing promising avenues for designing highly efficacious catalysts across electrochemical platforms.

The lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) endows NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) with superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, yet the frequent evolution and sluggish regeneration of lattice oxygen intensify the dissolution of active species. Herein, we overcome this challenge by constructing the NiFe hydroxide/Ni4Mo alloy (NiFe-LDH/Ni4Mo) heterojunction electrocatalyst, featuring the Ni4Mo alloy as the oxygen pump to provide oxygenous intermediates and electrons for NiFe-LDH. The released lattice oxygen can be timely offset by the oxygenous species during the LOM process, balancing the regeneration of lattice oxygen and assuring the enhancement of the durability. In consequence, the durability of NiFe-LDH is significantly enhanced after the modification of Ni4Mo with an impressively durability for over 60 h, much longer than that of NiFe-LDH counterpart with only 10 h. In-situ spectra and first-principle simulations reveal that the adsorption of OH- is significantly strengthened owing to the introduction of Ni4Mo, ensuring the rapid regeneration of lattice oxygen. Dual Cocatalytic Sites Synergize NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide to Boost Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer

AbstractNickel‐iron layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a promising cost‐efficient catalyst to replace noble metals for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet its intrinsic activity under high current density conditions is not satisfactory, which greatly constrains the industrial application of NiFe LDH catalysts. Herein, a new class of integrated Co and W co‐doped NiFe LDH catalysts is reported with dual cocatalytic sites for alkaline OER catalysis. The optimized Co2.8, W3.8‐NiFe LDH integrated catalyst has superior alkaline OER activity (255 mV@1000 mA cm−2) and excellent catalytic stability (200 h@500 mA cm−2). The turnover frequency value of Co2.8, W3.8‐NiFe LDH can reach 4.02 s−1 at 1.49 V versus RHE, which is 9.6 times higher than that of NiFe LDH and superior to the noble metal catalysts. Moreover, it can achieve 1.0 A cm−2 at 1.86 V and maintain 300‐h stable operation in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer. Theoretical and experimental studies indicate that W sites promote the *OH adsorption and Co sites favor protons desorption of OH*. These dual cocatalytic sites jointly promote *O coverage, effectively accelerating alkaline OER kinetic.

Ultralow Ru-doped NiFe catalyst on stainless-steel fibers for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction in anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis

Designing high-performance, stable electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) in industrial-scale hydrogen production. AEMWE has not yet been commercialized due to the high cost of precious metal catalysts and unsatisfactory performance of non-precious metal catalysts. Although various anodes are being developed to replace expensive Ir-based catalysts, low-cost catalysts that demonstrate a balance of performance and stability remain limited. In the present study, we fabricated a NiFe catalyst on a corrosion-resistant stainless-steel fiber paper substrate using a simple electrodeposition method and introduced small amounts of Ru via galvanic displacement. In half-cell tests, an enhanced overpotential of 229 mV was observed for the Ru-NiFe/SS anode at 10 mA/cm2. Using Ru-NiFe/SS as an anode for OER in AEMWE assembled with a commercial Pt/C cathode exhibited high performance with a current density of 8.73 A cm−2 (at 2.05 Vcell and 80℃). Long-term stability tests also showed that the Ru-NiFe/SS anode had higher stability than commercial IrO2 electrodes at 1 A cm−2 and 80℃ for 50 h. Therefore, Ru-NiFe/SS can be considered an alternative to conventional Ir-based electrodes to reduce hydrogen production costs.

Electrodeposition and Optimisation of Amorphous NixSy Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Environment.

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysers have shown their potential in green hydrogen production. One of the crucial tasks is to discover novel cost-effective and sustainable electrocatalyst materials. In this study, a low-cost Ni-S-based catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction was prepared via a simple electrodeposition process from a modified Watts bath recipe. Physical characterisation methods suggest this deposit film to be amorphous. Optimisation of the electrodeposition parameters of the NixSy catalyst was carried out using a rotating disk electrode setup. The optimised catalyst exhibited excellent catalytical performance in 1 M KOH on a microelectrode, with overpotentials of 41 mV, 111 mV and 202 mV at 10, 100 and 1000 mA cm-2 with Tafel slope of 67.9 mV dec-1 recorded at 333 K. Long-term testing of the catalyst demonstrated steady performance over a 24 h period on microelectrode at 100 mA cm-2 with only 71 mV and 37 mV overpotential increase at 293 K and 333 K respectively. Full cell testing with the optimised NixSy as cathode and NiFe(OH)2 as anode showed 1.88 V after 1 h electrolysis at 500 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH under 333 K with FAA-3-30 membrane.
