Development of Theoretical Study of Social Interpretation (Social Relations)

This reserach explores the application of Qur'anic social interpretation in social relations to address the complexity of contemporary social issues. This research aims to bridge the understanding of the Qur'anic teachings with their application in daily social dynamics, given the urgency of increasing social problems. Using a qualitative content analysis method, this study identifies and explains various social interpretations, evaluates their relevance in the modern social context, and examines the methodological differences between classical and contemporary interpretive approaches. The research focuses on the historical development of social tafsir, the influence of important figures such as Al-Sayyid Jamaluddin al-Afghani and Muhammad 'Abduh, and the application of tafsir in the context of multiculturalism and social justice. The results of this study are expected to produce strategies to promote social harmony through the application of inclusive and adaptive tafsir. The implications of the research show that a more inclusive understanding and application of social tafsir can be a solution in facing modern social challenges.

The Concept of Tawhid in the Perspective of Nusantara Mufassirs: A Comparative Study of Tafsir Al-Misbah and Tafsir Al-Azhar

Tawhid, as a fundamental concept in Islam, serves as the primary foundation for all religious teachings, particularly in the aspects of worship and social life. Tawhid not only teaches the oneness of Allah SWT but also acts as the basis that guides the behavior of Muslims in all aspects of their lives. Given the importance of this concept, various mufassirs or Qur'anic scholars from different cultural and intellectual backgrounds have sought to interpret it according to the context of their times and societies. This study focuses on two prominent mufassirs from the Nusantara, Quraish Shihab and Buya Hamka, whose works, Tafsir Al-Misbah and Tafsir Al-Azhar, have become key references in Islamic studies in Indonesia. The aim of this research is to compare and analyze how these two mufassirs understand and interpret the concept of Tawhid in the Qur'an. The method used is library research with a comparative approach, allowing the identification of similarities and differences in the interpretation of Tawhid by the two mufassirs. Tafsir Al-Misbah by Quraish Shihab is known for its contextual and modern approach, often linking the interpretation of Qur'anic verses to contemporary social realities. Conversely, Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka tends to use a more traditional approach, emphasizing the relevance of Qur'anic teachings in the daily lives of Muslims. The findings reveal that, despite differences in interpretative methods, both mufassirs share similar views on the essence of Tawhid. Quraish Shihab emphasizes the importance of contextual understanding tailored to the challenges of the times, while Buya Hamka focuses more on the spiritual and moral aspects of Tawhid. This difference lies in their methods, with Shihab inclined toward a more flexible hermeneutic approach, whereas Hamka is more literal and normative. Nonetheless, both agree that Tawhid should be reflected in all aspects of a Muslim's life and serve as the foundation for all moral actions and worship. This research provides important insights into the interpretation of Tawhid by Nusantara mufassirs and its relevance in the lives of Muslims in Indonesia today.

Keragaman Konsep Sulṭān dalam Al-Qur'an: Analisis Tematik Tafsir Al-Azhar oleh Hamka

This research aims to explore the interpretation of the word "Sulṭān" in the context of Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka. This research uses a qualitative study approach with a descriptive-analytical method to analyse how Hamka, in his famous tafsir Al-Azhar, understands and explains the concept of "Sulṭān" based on Qur'anic verses. The descriptive method is used to identify and describe Hamka's interpretation of the word "Sulṭān", while the analytical method is used to explore the implications and applications of this concept in the context of Muslim life and thought. The results of this study reveal that Hamka sees the word "Sulṭān" in the Qur'ān not only as a reference to human rulers, but also as an attribute attached to Allah SWT Himself in the context of His authority and power. Hamka's interpretation associates this word with concepts such as hikmah (wisdom), 'adl (justice), and rahmah (compassion), reflecting his holistic view of Qur'anic teachings. Thus, this study not only explores the interpretation of the text in depth but also examines the relevance of the concept of "Sulṭān" in understanding Islamic teachings more broadly. The implications of this interpretation can provide a better understanding of how the teachings of the Qur'ān can be applied in the context of the social and spiritual life of Muslims, as well as contributing to contemporary tafsir thought.

Sapiential Insights for Ultimate Wisdom and Intelligence Appraising the Qur’an and Science

The human body is an extremely intricate work of art, with systems and organs interacting to create what has been acknowledged as life. Among these intricate relationships, one of the most fascinating and significant is the one that has been recently discovered between the gut, the brain, and the heart. This discovery has potentially changed our fundamental reductionist, positivist and more precisely biochemical understanding of higher consciousness, wisdom intelligence etc, paving way for a more holistic comprehension which includes philosophical and epistemological analysis. More importantly, such changed paradigm, challenges the accepted dualisms and invites serious research to explore the interconnectedness of mind, body, and emotion. However, these discoveries sparked a surge of discussions among diverse Muslim scholars and researchers who seek to understand the Qur'anic concept of heart-interceded wisdom, as well as the reasons why the Qur'an insist and talks about heart as a reflection of man’s religiousness or piety. It is important to keep in mind that science and the Qur'an are two different discipline each with their own set of argument and approaches. For instance, science is an always changing discipline due to technological innovations while, the teachings of the Qur'an are constant, ageless, occasionally metaphorical or allegorical. In the light of this intricate landscape, science and the Qur'an may either support or challenge each other on various matters. Therefore, it is imperative to note that scientific knowledge should not be regarded as the ultimate source for comprehending the Qur'an. Nonetheless, many individuals explore scientific findings to deepen their faith and their comprehension of the Qur'an. So, in this exploratory article, we will delve into the heart-gut-brain relationship, its scientific underpinnings, and the implications it holds for our understanding of Qur'anic teachings, health, emotions, and consciousness.

The Correlation of Muhkam Verses with Nasikh and Mansukh in Islamic Legal Determination

This study examines the correlation between muhkam verses and nasikh wal mansukh in determining Islamic legal rulings. Muhkam verses, characterized by their clear and explicit meanings, and nasikh wal mansukh, referring to the abrogation of certain laws within the Qur'an, are foundational concepts in 'ulum al-Qur'an. The research utilizes a qualitative methodology, involving detailed textual analysis of primary Qur'anic verses and secondary scholarly interpretations. The findings reveal that while muhkam verses provide explicit legal instructions, the principles of nasikh wal mansukh allow for the adaptation of these laws in response to changing social and historical contexts. This dynamic interplay ensures that Islamic legal rulings remain relevant and effective across different eras and circumstances. The study highlights the necessity of understanding the conditions and implications of abrogation in Islamic law and underscores the importance of contextual and scholarly engagement in the interpretation and application of Qur'anic teachings. This comprehensive analysis contributes to the broader discourse on the flexibility and timeless applicability of Islamic law, demonstrating its capacity to address contemporary legal challenges without contradicting core religious principles.

The Interaction of the Holy Qur'an with the World

The Holy Qur'an has played a significant role in shaping human society. In a time when ignorance and superstitions prevailed, the Qur'an emerged as a beacon of knowledge, culture, and dignity. Through the teachings of the Messenger of Allah, spirituality, education, and literacy reached new heights. The depth and sophistication of the Qur'anic teachings have the ability to impress any intellect. Revealed in a society plagued by injustice, the Qur'an, as the word of the Lord of the Universe, transformed a society living in ignorance into a model for the world,. The Prophet used the Qur'an to guide people towards virtue. Historical accounts demonstrate that the Qur'an emphasizes the importance of considering the thoughts and feelings of others when engaging in preaching and outreach activities. For instance, the speech delivered by the Muslim leader Ja'far bin Abitwalib in the presence of Quraysh leaders to secure the release of Muslims who had migrated to Ethiopia accurately reflects the moral and human transformations brought about by the Prophet (PBUH) in Arabia. According to the perspective presented in the Qur'an, the fundamental worldview of humanity was cantered on 'Tawhid'. All genuine religious doctrines share commonalities. Minor variations may exist in the specifics of traditions and practices. Religions were established by imparting the essence of God, such as duality, trinity, and plurality. One of the objectives of the Qur'an is to structure human existence on a foundation of ethics, fostering harmony between human life and other forms of life.

EXPLORING CONSCIOUSNESS THROUGH THE QUR'AN: A PHILOSOPHICAL INQUIRY

This paper delves into the concept of consciousness as explored through the Qur'an, presenting a comprehensive philosophical inquiry into Islamic perspectives on the mind, self-awareness, and the nature of human understanding. Employing a hermeneutic approach to interpret Qur'anic verses, the study highlights the unique contributions of Islamic thought to the global discourse on consciousness. By juxtaposing Qur'anic teachings with contemporary philosophical and scientific theories of consciousness, this inquiry sheds light on the interplay between divine wisdom and human intellect in understanding the essence of consciousness. The research adopts a multidisciplinary methodology, integrating insights from Islamic theology, philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science to explore the Qur'anic conceptualization of consciousness. The analysis reveals that the Qur'an offers profound insights into the nature of consciousness, emphasizing its multifaceted dimensions, including self-awareness, perception, intentionality, and the soul's journey. Digital Transformation of Islamic Boarding School Education

This study investigates the integration of digital technology in Tahfidzul Qur’an education within Islamic boarding schools. While education is crucial for human development, boarding schools face challenges such as outdated infrastructure and a heavy curriculum. The research aims to fill the gap in understanding how digital technology affects learning outcomes and student development in Tahfidzul Qur’an education. Using a mixed-method approach, it analyzes quantitative data on student performance and qualitative insights from interviews with teachers, students, and parents. Results show that digital technology positively impacts Tahfidzul Qur’an education by improving memorization, understanding, and application of Qur’anic teachings. However, challenges like limited access to technology and balancing digital and traditional methods persist. Recommendations include providing digital resources and training for teachers to enhance student learning outcomes and prepare them for the digital era while preserving Islamic values. Highlight: 1. Minangkabaunese matrilineal: The correlation between the Qur’an and gender

Upon previous research, the matrilineal system seems to oppose Islamic teaching. However, the matrilineal system practiced by the Minangkabau society in West Sumatra, Indonesia has its uniqueness. Thus, this study aims to examine the correlation between the Qur’an and gender roles within the context of Minangkabau customs, specifically focusing on the matrilineal aspect. The present study employs qualitative methods for conducting library research through critical analysis. This study discovered that the matrilineal system practiced by the Minangkabau society aligns with Qur’anic teachings that respect the position of women in Islam. In the matrilineal system of Minangkabau, women hold significant strength and play an influential role in cultural and traditional practices. The Minangkabau tribe’s matrilineal system encompasses three key elements: marriage, inheritance and offspring. The marriage system is exogamous. Additionally, the practice of marriage is localised, with the husband typically residing in the wife’s household. Their inheritance is divided into pusako tinggi [from ancestors from generation to generation] and pusako randah (from the efforts of married couple). Women get pusako tinggi as they serve as protectors and a symbol of their community. In comparison, men take the responsibility of overseeing its preservation to prevent any form of misuse. Pusako randah is distributed as Islamic teaching. Lineage determination is primarily based on paternal lineage, aligning with Islamic teaching. Upon comprehensive analysis, it becomes evident that there is no conflict between the matrilineal system and Islamic teachings, particularly concerning principles of gender equality. Both women and men have significant roles, as the Qur’an provides extensive explanations regarding gender equality.Contribution: This research holds significant findings in establishing a great relation between Islamic teachings based on the Qur’an and the matrilineal principles practiced by the Minangkabau tribe.

Perspective of Hadith in Halal Industry

Halal industry is a unique industry such that it is directly tied to shariah, rendering all regulations, procedures, and conduct must clearly be based on the Islamic sources of knowledge namely the Qur’an and Hadith. While many discourses on halal focused on the Qur’anic teachings, less were discussed from the point of view of the Hadith. This is regrettable as hadith provides solutions and best practices in various scenarios in life. Thus, this study aims to collate and provide a discourse of hadith surrounding the halal industry. It also aims to identify the elements of Maqasid framework within these collated hadith and finally develop formative theories and principles. The study employs a narrative literature review combined with Maqasid methodology. A selection of hadith related to halal industry with brief discourse is presented based on the Global Islamic Index - seven sectors of halal industry. Finally, through the collated hadith, the relationship between halal industry and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) was critically evaluated. It was found that many of these values are already embedded within Islamic teachings. Embracing ESG principles in the halal industry can bring about substantial benefits towards promoting ethical and sustainable behavior. However, it is imperative that these principles go beyond mere rhetoric and are put into practice through tangible actions.

EFFECTIVENESS OF SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS IN DISSEMINATING QUR’ANIC TEACHINGS AMONG CONTEMPORARY MUSLIMS

Social media platforms can be an effective tool for disseminating Qur’anic teachings among contemporary Muslims, as they provide a wide-reaching and accessible means of communication. In fact, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube have millions of users worldwide, including a significant number of Muslims. This, perhaps makes it possible to disseminate Qur’anic teachings to a wide audience quickly and easily, regardless of geographical location and language barrier. It thus provides accessibility to individuals with diverse backgrounds and abilities, making Qur’anic teachings accessible and available to a wide range of people at their fingertips. Social media as a means of disseminating knowledge and information that are vital for societal growth create a sense of virtual community among Muslims and enable them to connect and learn from each other, particularly on Qur’anic teachings. It is in line with this submission that this discusses the effectiveness of social media platforms in disseminating Qur’anic teachings among contemporary Muslims. Accordingly, this study has identified some of the social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram as the channels that are utilised for the dissemination of Qur’anic teachings in the cyber-world. The paper adopted qualitative survey where Interviews were conducted with seasoned social users. The researchers purposively selected seven participants for the study because they are Muslims and possessed the knowledge about the phenomenon investigated. Some of the findings of the study revealed that social media are effective channels for the dissemination Qur’anic teaching to the contemporary world.

Islamic Perception of Religious Freedom: A Critical Analysis

Religious freedom is considered a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of human dignity. Islam, being a universal religion, protects the rights of every individual, and thus, preserves and upholds the dignity of human persons irrespective of their religious convictions. This study aims to understand Islamic perception of religious freedom from a historical point of view. It is based on textual analysis and historical interpretation of the Qur’an and Sunnah. It also supports its case by analysing some Muslim ruler’s treatment of other religions. The study shows that Islam provides complete freedom to every individual so long as it does not violate or interfere the right of others, and explicitly prohibits all kinds of intervention in matters of religious beliefs and practices. Though the Prophetic tradition “whoever changes his religion, kill him” seems contradictory to freedom of religion, this has been contextualised in particular situation by contemporary Islamic scholars. The study concludes that the Qur’anic teachings, the Prophetic practices and Muslim rulers’ treatment of other religions affirm that Islam provides equal opportunities to all regardless of their attachments to any religion or ideology, and Muslims can neither force any body to accept Islam nor impose anything against his/her will. Analisis dan Solusi Kesulitan Belajar dalam Pendidikan Islam

This research aims to identify the various forms of learning difficulties experienced by learners and present solutions inspired by Qur'anic teachings to overcome these problems. This research used a literature study which involved collecting data through searching and reviewing relevant literature. Literature sources were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data analysis process involved summarizing the data, presenting relevant data, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study suggest: 1) Learning difficulties in the Islamic view are influenced by internal (physical and spiritual aspects) and external (environmental situations and conditions) factors. Learning difficulties are classified based on criteria such as the type of difficulty, the field of study affected, the nature of the difficulty, and the factors causing it. 2) To overcome learning difficulties, the solutions exemplified in the Qur'an include increasing the motivation of learners, selecting appropriate learning methods, services that focus on the differences of learners, providing examples of stories and teachings that show the importance of the process of seeking knowledge. In addition, educators are expected to recognize the characteristics and learning styles of learners, provide services that are appropriate to differences, and be good role models. Thus, learning difficulties in the Islamic context are not only an individual problem, but also include external factors and require a holistic approach.

ʻAlī Shariʻatī on the Crises of Modernity

Modernity is one of the most prominent & eminent discourses of the post-colonial Muslim ummah; a challenge that threatened the existence & survival of Muslim societies around the globe, regardless of culture & nationality. Islamic modernity & its intellectuals emerged & debated the vital & delicate issue of modernity; this discourse included the impact of modernity on Muslim societies as it confronted Muslim civilization. Dr. Ali Shari'ati is one of the most outstanding thinkers, philosophers & interpreters of Islamic thought. He presented a social vision of Islam, identifying degenerating factors that led to the backwardness & stagnancy of Muslim societies. Shari'ati’s discourse on modernity reflects what the Muslim civilization could take away from modernity, as well as what it had to contribute to it in the form of the emerging idea of “Islamic Modernity”. He emphasized the need to launch a religious renaissance based on the understanding of the concept of man, god, humanity & the inter-connectivity of these elements in the light of Islamic & Qur’anic teachings to develop a dynamic interpretation of Islam that can enter into dialogue with modern intellectual trends.

The education of children in an Islamic family based on the Holy Qur’an

Education has been acknowledged as the key factor contributing to personality development and identity formation. To ensure appropriate education, it is thus of utmost importance to reflect on the power of the educational content. As a result, respecting Islamic values from a major authentic source, like the Holy Qur’an, paves the ground to fulfil this goal. On the contrary, the first and foremost educators to convey these values are the family, because each person mainly spends the time of one’s education in this small, primary social institution. Above and beyond, the building block of a society and the starting point of a culture, a civilisation and human history is the family. As a noble book of guidance for the human beings, the Holy Qur’an has accordingly shed light on the role of the family. Against this background, this study, adopting a descriptive analytical approach, aimed to investigate the Islamic family from the perspective of the Holy Qur’an with an emphasis on the education of children. Accordingly, the Holy Qur’an reveals that the main purposes of creating a family are inner peace, generational survival and expansion of the faith and monotheism. A healthy family environment can thus have a profound impact on cultivating moral character and virtues. In view of the Holy Qur’an, the family is the first place to seek relief and perform the acts of worship. No divine religions have also given as much value to the family as Islam, which implies its comprehensiveness. Despite much attention to the family in most societies, it receives special importance in the Qur’anic teachings. This article is a review study that dealt with Qur’anic concepts related to education in the family. Therefore, after categorising different Qur’anic verses, analyses have been presented in each category.Contribution: Islam has set many specific programmes and educational instructions from childbirth and then delegated their implementation to the family. Accordingly, this noble religion offers many guidelines for picking a perfect name, breastfeeding and weaning, loving, observing justice and fulfilling promises in relation to children.

Songkabala Tradition in the Makassarese Society: Local Values and Messages of the Al-Qur’an an Anthropological Perspective on Islamic Law

Local traditions as religious practices in Indonesian society experience dialectic and integration of Islamic teachings. Every ethnicity in Indonesia has socio-cultural mechanisms in dealing with calamities and disasters which are influenced by religion and customs. This then dialectic with the practice of Islamic law. The study seeks to examine songkabala, a tradition of mutual acceptance in the Makassarese society. These traditions are local values that contain Al-Qur’anic teachings. This is an empirical legal study employing an anthropological perspective on Islamic law. In-depth interviews and literature reviews focused on three districts inhabited by Makassarese, namely Maros, Gowa, and Takalar, were employed to collect data. The study indicates that songkabala is the spirit of Al-Qur’anic verses associated to human responses to calamity, including remembrance of Allah, gratitude, and ritualized prayer. Songkabala is a Makassarese folk tradition that contains Al-Qur’anic themes. The verses of the Al-Qur’an indicate that the command to pray and the remembrance of Allah are incorporated into the songkabala ritual. Consequently, there is no incompatibility between the songkabala tradition and the teachings of the Al-Qur’an.

Cultural and Religious Perspectives on Education of Saudi Arabia

In this composition, the intricacies of the relationship between culture and education in Saudi Arabia are analyzed and its implications for students from early education to higher learning are evaluated. The examination delves into the manner in which Islam and the country's customary gender roles shape the syllabus and educational customs. The inculcation of Qur'anic teachings and Hadith, as well as the propagation of Wahhabi principles, are integral facets of religion's influence on the nation's educational structure. The segregation of academic institutions by gender, stringent dress codes, and strict observance of behavioral codes are exemplars of the impact of religion on education. Additionally, the cultural and religious emphasis on gender roles is pronounced through the stringent separation of schools and the reinforcement of cultural and religious norms in society. The religious curriculum and instructional materials are rigorously scrutinized to guarantee their conformity to the government's interpretation of Islam. The report accentuates both the difficulties and prospects that the cultural and educational landscape presents for students, educators, and education professionals in Saudi Arabia.

The study of Islamic teachings in education: With an emphasis on behavioural gentleness

The human being is the most wonderful creation of God and the highest sign of his infinite power. Humanity is capable of achieving all divine perfections. God created them to reach the position of God’s closeness and God’s successor on Earth, and this path will not be realised except by the correct education. A human is a divine being who has settled in this earthly world, and correct education is the only way to achieve that sacred truth. Divine prophets have come to prepare the Earth for this great transformation in human existence and guide them to the light of divine teachings. There is no doubt that if human beings are not educated according to divine standards, they will remain at the level of animality. The Holy Qur’an, as the most precious Islamic divine book, presents the best way of education based on the knowledge of the truth of humanity and their needs. In addition, it is appropriate to discuss the role of behavioural gentleness in the education of people, and in this regard, the Qur’anic verses have been reviewed carefully. Therefore, the aim of this manuscript is to study the Islamic teachings in education with an emphasis on behavioural gentleness.Contribution: If curriculum planners and educators in general pay attention to Qur’anic teachings in education and base their curriculum and educational programs on Qur’anic teachings and according to characteristics and abilities and appropriateness of methods, and if the contents are paid attention to and educational programs are produced based on the will and authority of the educators, we will definitely witness progress and development in educational systems on the one hand and development and progress in all levels of life.

When Gender Is a Problem in Islamic Theology and Qur’anic Tafsir

This paper critiques the tendency to map sex/gender onto God and to interpolate sex/gender partisanship into God's speech in Islamic theology and tafsir (classical and feminist), which generates patriarchal readings of the Qur'an. The first practice violates the theologeme of God's incomparability, while the second imputes a gender hierarchy to the Qur'an even though there is no concept of gender itself in the text. Instead, the paper proposes an anti-patriarchal reading that is more congruent with God's self-disclosure as well as with key Qur'anic teachings that affirm the ontic equality of women and men.

A Historical-Contextualist Approach to the Joseph Chapter of the Qur’an

Abstract This article applies a historical-contextualist approach to analyzing the Joseph sūra of the Qur’an. It first explores the theoretical framework of this study and introduces the historical-contextualist methodology employed and then provides a brief explanation of the Qur’anic account of the story of Joseph. The Joseph sūra is analyzed in light of the context of its revelation and the use it makes of fundamental Qur’anic teachings. This article demonstrates that the revelation of the sūra of Joseph was closely related to the sociopolitical context in which Muhammad and the Muslims lived, and that the sūra highlights several fundamental theological teachings of the Qur’an, including God’s unity and omnipotence, revelation and prophethood, and the afterlife, all themes emphasized in earliest sūras of the Qur’an including those revealed before the Joseph sūra.
