Anatomical Variations of Celiac Trunk Branching Pattern in Different Ethnic Groups in Population of Karachi by 3D MDCTA

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of branching pattern of celiac trunk variations in different ethnic group in population of Karachi. Study Design: Cross- sectional study Duration: March, 2017- August, 2017. Place: Ziauddin hospital Karachi, Clifton campus, Department of Radiology & Anatomy Method: Total 160 participants were selected with the age range between 20-60 years old male & female adults. The subjects who were recruited in present study were those who came for 3D MDCTA without any upper abdominal vascular or visceral pathologies. Participants were interviewed to collect their demographic particulars and categorize them in different ethnic groups. Variation of Celiac trunk was analysed by Uflacker’s classification. Statistical analysis was completed on SPSS (version 20) and all the data has been presented in percentage and frequency. Results: Classical celiac trunk was found to be the highest in Urdu Speaking i.e. 52 (32.5%) individuals followed by Punjabi speaking 36(22.5%) and 28(17.5%) individuals in Sindhi speaking and least was found in pakhtoon speaking 18(11.25 %) individuals in our study participants. Variant of Celiac trunk was found to be highest in Urdu speaking exhibiting a frequency of 13(8.125 %) individuals. It was followed by Pakhtoon, Sindhi and Punjabi speaking with the frequency of 7(4.375%), 4 (2.5%) and 2(1.25%) individuals respectively. Practical Implication: Present study reports celiac trunk variations in Pakistani population in different ethnic groups. The prevalence of celiac trunk variations in different ethnic groups found in our study was low but these variations may cause catastrophic injuries while doing laproscopic surgeries or Chemoembolization for liver cancer. Vascular anatomical variations of celiac trunk mostly found accidently during interventional or radiological procedures so it should be reported routinely to create awareness regarding vascular variations specifically in different ethnic groups. This data may be utilized by the radiologists and surgeon to reduce catastrophic injuries for patient well being. Conclusion: It has been concluded that vascular anatomical variations of celiac trunk found accidently during interventional or radiological procedures so it is essential to have a knowledge of vascular variations and their presence in different ethnic groups. This data may be utilized by the radiologists and surgeon to avoid injuries specific to Pakistani population. Anatomical variations of the celiac trunk and hepatic arterial system: an analysis using multidetector computed tomography angiography.

ObjectiveTo analyze the prevalence of anatomical variations of celiac arterial trunk (CAT) branches and hepatic arterial system (HAS), as well as the CAT diameter, length and distance to the superior mesenteric artery.Materials and MethodsRetrospective, cross-sectional and predominantly descriptive study based on the analysis of multidetector computed tomography images of 60 patients.ResultsThe celiac trunk anatomy was normal in 90% of cases. Hepatosplenic trunk was found in 8.3% of patients, and hepatogastric trunk in 1.7%. Variation of the HAS was observed in 21.7% of cases, including anomalous location of the right hepatic artery in 8.3% of cases, and of the left hepatic artery, in 5%. Also, cases of joint relocation of right and left hepatic arteries, and trifurcation of the proper hepatic artery were observed, respectively, in 3 (5%) and 2 (3.3%) patients. Mean length and caliber of the CAT were 2.3 cm and 0.8 cm, respectively. Mean distance between CAT and superior mesenteric artery was 1.2 cm (standard deviation = 4.08). A significant correlation was observed between CAT diameter and length, and CAT diameter and distance to superior mesenteric artery.ConclusionThe pattern of CAT variations and diameter corroborate the majority of the literature data. However, this does not happen in relation to the HAS.

Morphometry of the celiac trunk: a multidetector computed tomographic angiographic study

Aims: We carried out this study for evaluating the normal anatomy trunk and prevalence of anatomical variations of celiac trunk in the North Indian population. Materials and methods: Computerized tomographic images of 50 North Indian subjects, obtained from the Department of Radiodiagnosis, King George's Medical University, were retrospectively analyzed. The anatomy of the celiac trunk was studied using dynamic scans. Results: A variation in the site of origin of celiac trunk was observed in about 55% cases. The length and dimensions of the trunk also displayed a wide range of variation. Conclusion: Anatomic variations of the celiac trunk as observed by us may become important in patients undergoing diagnostic angiography for gastrointestinal bleeding or prior to an operative procedure. Recognition of variations would enable clinicians to distinguish features which merit further investigations or treatment from those which do not.
