Gender differences in google scholar representation and impact: an empirical analysis of political communication, journalism, health communication, and media psychology

Improving gender equality in top-tier scholars and addressing gender bias in research impact are among the significant challenges in academia. However, extant research has observed that lingering gender differences still undermine female scholars. This study examines the recognition of female scholars through Google Scholar data in four different subfields of communication, focusing on two pressing issues: (1) gender representation among the most cited scholars and (2) gender differences in citations. Our findings demonstrate significant differences in gender proportions among the most cited scholars across all subfields, but especially in Political Communication and Journalism. The regression analysis revealed significant differences in citation scores in Political Communication, Journalism, and the pooled sample. However, results revealed that gender differences in research impact were not statistically significant in Health Communication and Media Psychology. Our study advocates for shifts in the citing behavior of communication scholars, emphasizing the importance of actively recognizing and citing studies conducted by female researchers to drive advancements in communication research.

Analysis of Political Communication on The Role of Social Media Towards the 2024 General Election

This research was conducted to analyze the role of social media that discusses political communication towards the 2024 election. Political communication towards elections with social media is one of the channels of political communication to reach voters, especially the public. Much research contributes to digital campaigns, but it remains unclear how candidates use social media platforms as a form of digital campaigning during elections. This research will focus on discussing the role of social media ahead of the Presidential election in Indonesia in 2024 and the political strategies used by each candidate. Through four social media platforms Facebook, Tiktok, Twitter, and Instagram. This research will also examine the issues, conflicts and obstacles discussed in the four media platforms we have mentioned earlier. This research uses a qualitative approach and the data is analyzed using qualitative methods. A qualitative approach is used to analyze data obtained from various social media and other reliable sources. With the existence of social media, various news has been prepared as an official source in disseminating programs and ideas to voters through available social media platforms. In this analysis we will examine whether social media has a big influence if hoaxes or news that spread can influence people to remain committed to their choices or even believe in what is seen on social media. The results of this study will provide ideas or memories about the journey to the General Election and the results of this study will also include various moments that often occur on social media ahead of the 2024 election. That way, this research contributes to telling or giving a better understanding in social media.

"Vicious Circle" of War: Metaphorization of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine in Éric Zemmour's Twitter Communication

In the crucible of conflict, the discourse employed by political leaders transcends the mere conveyance of information, delving into the realm of strategic communication and persuasion. Twitter, with its brevity and widespread usage among political actors, offers a rich source for investigating political discourse dynamics. Particularly notable is the pervasive use of metaphors by politicians during times of crisis, a linguistic phenomenon that extends beyond its conventional literary function to assume a critical role in shaping public perceptions, fostering unity, and framing the narrative of conflict. This article focuses on the analysis of political communication of Éric Zemmour, a prominent figure in the contemporary French political landscape, on Twitter to reveal main functions of metaphors during the first year of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The research has been conducted using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as the main approach and elements of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). By integrating these methodologies, the study revealed that Éric Zemmour employs conceptual and traditional metaphors to present to explain relations between France-Ukraine-Russia, enhance own credibility and trustworthiness, shape public opinion, simplify the complex geopolitical event, evoke emotional responses, appeal to the national pride and identity, construct social actors and events, underscore the urgency and seriousness of the current situation, and personify the subjects. The paper thus provides a more nuanced understanding of the linguistic and conceptual mechanisms of metaphors in Zemmour's Twitter communication during a crucial geopolitical event.

Destabilizing Race in Political Communication: Social Movements as Sites of Political Imagination

ABSTRACT How do social movement actors use consciousness-raising communicative practices to reconfigure political understandings of race? And how can such practices shape the analysis of political communication? We explore these questions by drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, semi-structured interviews, and archival materials to examine two case studies: an historical example of Grace Lee Boggs’ structural guidelines for creating a revolutionary study group in the Asian Political Alliance and a contemporary example of Equality Labs’ anti-caste political organizing by engaging across racial and caste social hierarchies. These cases illustrate the analytic value of engaging alternative theoretical frameworks of race and politics from critical ethnic studies, feminist of color scholarship, and social movements as rich sites of political theory through cultivating political consciousness in service of radical political imaginations. This article offers two main contributions to the field of political communication. First, by looking at the creative work of racial theorizing within social movements, we destabilize the limits of race as a demographic category. Second, we demonstrate the analytic value of studying political education and consciousness-raising as communicative practices that emphasize relational reconfigurations of race. This article recasts racial political discourse from public opinion and campaign messaging measured quantitatively to political imaginations that must be interpreted within historical and material contexts. As our cases demonstrate, centering the shifting category of race within movement building opens up the field of political communication to the communicative processes of consciousness-building and also offers dynamic understandings of race and racialization.

Value and Goal-Oriented Dispositives of the Discourse of Cultural Heritage in the Theory of Political Communication

Studies of recent years have shown a weakening of the urban identity of the youth of St. Petersburg, a lack of interest in the preservation of cultural heritage. The purpose of the study is to deconstruct discourses and identify the value-oriented and goal-oriented components of dispositives that allow understanding the drives of communication in social networks and adjusting the policy of urban identity. The article applies the actor-network theory to data reconstructed from the texts of social networks of residents and city defenders about the St. Petersburg cultural architectural heritage, which allowed us to adapt the ANT for a systematic analysis of urban identity politics, taking into account infl uential factors in the modern environment of network communications and related policies. Identity is considered simultaneously as a discursive construction and as an effect of the confi guration of human and non-human actors that respond in social practice to the current transformation of the symbiotic relationship between man and the environment. On the material of the media and social networks regarding the destruction of the building, the content was analyzed using the discursive method and actor-network theory. Three possible levels of use of ANT in the analysis of political communication around cultural heritage are identifi ed and illustrated: 1) material objects stabilize social relations; 2) have real and sensual qualities that contribute to projective identifi cation; 3) ensure the spatiality and integrity of the city. In the course of analyzing the boundaries of network interactions, the psychoanalytic concept of “lack” is actualized as an insoluble contradiction and antagonism of discourses, as a projection of anxiety in texts, with the prevailing uncertainty of the current motivation. The result of the study was the identifi cation of value-oriented and goal-oriented dispositives of discourses in the fi eld of urban identity and the development of a program for the policy of communication with network actors. The identifi cation of dispositives allowed us to establish the conditions for productive communication as a determining factor in symbiotic regimes in the modern city.

Presidential discourse, the public and recurring themes: A political communication analysis of the 2019 State of the Nation Address in Ghana

The State of the Nation Address is one of the most important public speeches of a president because it sets the tone, framework and plans of the administration in any given year. This research contributes to contemporary scholarly studies by systematically studying presidential discourse within a growing African democracy – from a communication perspective – rather than the routine generic policy analysis. Since communication is a vital aspect of governance, the present study helps to unearth the policy priorities and framework that characterized a major administration under Ghana’s democracy. From a broader perspective, the textual analysis of this speech offers a modest attempt to examine some elements of political communication within Africa’s democratization process. The major objectives of the study were twofold: (a) first, to analyse the major topics or subject areas embedded in the speech and (b) to ascertain the recurring essential thematic elements of the State of the Nation Address as postulated by Shogan. The results indicate that the social agenda (including sanitation, housing and social amenities) was the central focus of the President’s address, followed by politics, while economic affairs featured as the third predominant issue in the address. Three thematic elements – bipartisanship, past and future, and optimism – are discursively analysed. This study contributes to the study of political communication and Presidential agendas in one of Africa’s fledgling democracies.

DISCOURSE ANALYSIS IN POLITICAL LINGUISTICS: HISTORY AND PRESENT

Since the end of the 20th century, political discourse has not only been a political, but also a linguistic and cultural problem, which is closely related to the development of democracy, the social culture of society and the rapid development of the media. The political discourse develops inproportion to the strengthening of democracy as a special form of communication. Today more than ever in politics, language is used not only as a tool for forming and expressing thoughts, but also as a means of hiding these thoughts and thus manipulating public consciousness.This paper illustrates the formation and development of a discursive approach to the analysis of political communication. Discourse analysis is considered in the article as an important methodological basis of modern research in the field of political linguistics, the tools of which allow a comprehensive analysis of political communication including the language plan, the plan of thinking and sociopolitical realities. The relevance of this approach is primarily due to the pragmatic orientation of political communication, which aims to control public opinion and impose politician's opinion on the people.Based on the work of leading scholars, the article defines the concept of discourse, as well as clarifies the concepts of public and political discourse, which are important for further research in the field of political linguistics.

Media-centric and Politics-centric Views of Media and Democracy: A Longitudinal Analysis of Political Communication and the International Journal of Press/Politics

ABSTRACT Political communication is a dynamic, interdisciplinary field that has grown in stature and reach in recent decades, becoming more international in scope and orientation while gaining respect in political science as a legitimate area of inquiry. In the evolving and participatory media-politics landscape, it becomes important to ask how the cross-disciplinary project of political communication research is keeping pace with changing conditions that provide a greater structural role for the press in politics and new technology in the enactment of citizenship. To track these trends in research, this paper reports the results of a longitudinal content analysis of research articles published in the journals Political Communication and the International Journal of Press/Politics for the period 1996-2016. For each year, we selected one issue at random and examined all research articles in that issue, excluding reviews, invited theme essays, and commentaries. Altogether, 229 articles were included in the analysis. Results indicate a noticeable increase in the internationalization of political communication research over the 20-year analysis period, a slight decrease in research expressing a negative evaluative tone toward the media over time, and consistent growth in the percentage of articles with a media-centric focus, defined as positioning the press as a central consideration in the study and regarding news media as central to democratic life. In light of these findings, the unique interpretive lenses that researchers adopt depending on discipline are explored in relation to ongoing developments in political communication research.

The International and Post-disciplinary Journey of Political Communication: Reflections on “Media-centric and Politics-centric Views of Media and Democracy: A Longitudinal Analysis of Political Communication and the International Journal of Press/Politics”

ABSTRACT Political communication research has become more international over the past decades, but this has mainly meant expanding the scope of our discipline from the very United States-centric perspective that characterized its founding years to the broader realm of liberal Western democracies. As a result, a wide gap remains between our knowledge of political communication in countries in the so-called Global North and Global South. Besides expanding its international outlook, contemporary political communication research needs to tackle the challenges of reconciling different normative perspectives and to embrace the opportunities of “post-disciplinary” approaches.

The Structural-Compositional and Phase Peculiarities of Dialogical Interaction in British, German and Ukrainian Parliamentary Debates: the Comparative As-pect

The article, which is an investigation part of the grant program Erasmus+, Jean Monnet Project European Antitotalitarian Practices (№ 599704-EPP-1-2018-1-UA-EPPJMO-MODULE), is devoted to the research of dialogical interaction of speakers in the parliaments of Great Britain, Germany and Ukraine held in the format of political debates. In this comparative study, the phases of parliamentary debates unfolding, their functional purposes, and the features of verbal outlining of this social interaction were established, and both isomorphic and allomorphic features were found out. The parliamentary debates are a kind of political argument between political subjects in the ethnic parliament who persuade each other in the rightfulness of their position while passing a law. The main purpose of it, however, is to influence a mass addressee, the potential electorate, via mass media. This communicative event in the format of ethnic parliamentary debates is analyzed with the help of frame analysis, the method of cognitive linguistics. Such a choice is stipulated by two facts. Firstly, it is determined by modern linguistic demands as for the language and speech facts investigation. And, secondly, frames as cognitive structures that keep information about various events, the ways of its successful implementation in familiar situations while working out a necessary strategic-and-tactic line of communicative behavior, turn out to be a rather effective instrument of political communication analysis. It has been established that the debates in the countries mentioned above possess a common structural-compositional construction, similar phases of dialogical interaction fixed in such slots as THE BEGINNING OF THE DIALOGUE, THE PROGRESS OF THE DIALOGUE, and THE END OF THE DIALOGUE of the frame scenario THE PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES. Each phase and its constituents are regulated and have specific tasks as the parts of the only aim – an approval of law projects and influence on the mass audience. The differences of the debates unfolding are predetermined by their content, the traditions, and rules of their realization as well as by the norms of communicative behavior of representatives of these ethnic communities.

Mobilizing collective hatred through humour: Affective-discursive production and reception of populist rhetoric.

This research examines the mobilization of populist rhetoric of the 2019 Finns Party election video. By focusing on both the FP’s election video (production) and Youtube users’ comments (reception), we examine the constructions and uses of social categories and humour as well as responses to their rhetorical deployment among like‐minded supporters and opponents. The multimodal analysis of the production of a populist campaign video demonstrates the construction of social categories and humour through the five steps of collective hate. These humorous messages are differently received by like‐minded and opposing YouTube users. Two supportive affective–discursive practices – glorification and schadenfreude – both express shared joy and laughter, but while glorification emphasizes the positive self‐understanding of the in‐group, schadenfreude belittles the ‘political Other’. Two opposing affective–discursive practices – irritation and scorn – place FP voters in subject positions of morally and intellectually inferior fascists, racists, and idiots. The populist message fosters expressions of social anger and polarization between FP supporters and opponents. Humour entangled with hatred encourages a sense of moral superiority in both groups. This study contributes to the current knowledge of mobilizing populist rhetoric and polarization, and responds to the call to broaden analysis of political communication in the field of multimodality.

Las columnas de la lengua sobre comunicación política del Marqués de Tamarón y de Álex Grijelmo: la “lengua” de los políticos en cuestión

El objetivo de este artículo es indagar en el análisis de la comunicación política que se realiza en las columnas sobre la lengua publicadas en diarios españoles después del período político conocido como la transición. Para ello, hemos seleccionado a dos columnistas, el Marqués de Tamarón y Álex Grijelmo, que escriben, respectivamente, en los años ochenta del siglo XX y en las primeras décadas del siglo XXI. Hemos examinado el tratamiento que realizan de los recursos y estrategias señalados en los estudios críticos del discurso y la pragmática lingüística para la caracterización de los usos políticos del lenguaje. Los resultados de nuestro análisis muestran que el Marqués de Tamarón opta por una caracterización sociológica del habla “incorrecta” de los políticos, mientras que el interés de Grijelmo es la legitimidad del discurso de los actores políticos. Se concluye que la discusión lingüística que se presenta en sus columnas no está motivada únicamente por las finalidades propias del género metalingüístico al que se adscriben. El propósito es interpretar, en el caso del Marqués de Tamarón, los cambios sociales que inducen la jerga usada por los políticos, y, en el de Grijelmo, la manipulación de los acontecimientos políticos referidos en el discurso.

Online coders, open codebooks: New opportunities for content analysis of political communication

AbstractAnalyzing audiovisual communication is challenging because its content is highly symbolic and less rule-governed than verbal material. But audiovisual messages are important to understand: they amplify, enrich, and complicate the meaning of textual information. We describe a fully-reproducible approach to analyzing video content using minimally—but systematically—trained online workers. By aggregating the work of multiple coders, we achieve reliability, validity, and costs that equal those of traditional, intensively trained research assistants, with much greater speed, transparency, and replicability. We argue that measurement strategies relying on the “wisdom of the crowd” provide unique advantages for researchers analyzing complex and intricate audiovisual political content.

Contemporary political and communication processes in political governance

The article is devoted to the analysis of political communication as a special kind of political relations; through which subjects dominate in politics regulate the production and distribution of socio-political ideas. In the modern world, political communication serves as an integral element of political governance, the success of the functioning of the entire political system of society depends on its quality. The author believes that modern political governance has a communicative nature, so political communication plays a leading role in the information society. This, in turn, leads to a change in the classical model of political governance, based on the coercion and legitimate legitimacy of violence by the communicative model of political governance. At the same time, information and communication technologies and the development of new means of communication directly change the system of relations between the state and society, including in the political sphere, which already influences the effectiveness of political management of society through traditional instruments, posing to the states and political institutions the problem of developing new approaches to political communication with the masses. The underestimation of the consequences of the introduction of modern information and communication technologies in everyday life can become a powerful factor in destabilizing the political system, associated with a sharp drop in the effectiveness of classical mass models of political governance.

Politicians & the public: The analysis of political communication in social media

ABSTRACTNowadays, social media has a pivotal role in political communication. Politicians, parties, and the public engage in social networks like Twitter or Facebook. This panel focuses on election campaigns and policy‐making process in social media. How do politicians use social media during elections? How can we identify the public opinion of voters through the application of text‐mining in social media? The US presidential election in 2016, possess big discussions and critics about the general social media usage in the context of election campaigns. Considering the case of Cambridge Analytica, information leakage, privacy issues, and trust also play an essential role as well. In respect of truthfulness, how can we encourage more robust and wide‐reaching sharing of trustworthy material, such as scholarly research? Besides politicians, the public comes more and more into the focus as a political stakeholder in social media. How does the public engage in policy‐making? Electronic‐petitioning serves as a medium to mobilize support and interest of the public. The panel provides the possibility for speaker and participants to exchange both, information as well as methodological approaches of political communication in social media.

Social media election campaigning: who is working for whom? A conceptual exploration of digital political labour

ABSTRACTThis paper posits the notion of digital political labour (DPL) as a rewarding concept for the analysis of political communication and social media. Numerous studies conclude that the engagement, dialogic and social affordances of social media have not yet been realised. But despite the lack of direct interaction, active audiences are, by their own actions in social media, taking part in DPL since audiences do not only receive political messages but contribute significantly with their own user-generated content. The empirical data in this study are from the official Facebook pages of Swedish political parties during the 2014 national election campaign. The results show that most of the communications work is actually performed by the audiences, and not by the parties themselves. This study highlight two important dimensions of DPL where users constitute targets and carriers of advertising as well as audiences whose free labour generates political campaign content.

The political functions of virtue in the eighteenth-century Italian debate

ABSTRACTMany recent studies either assert that the concept of virtue in eighteenth-century Italian intellectual culture is a polysemous term without really explaining its meaning, or concentrate on just one of its many facets. However, so far no study has explored the shades of meaning ascribed to ‘virtue’ to their full extent. This study is an attempt to reconstruct the eighteenth-century Italian intellectual perspective on virtue and to reveal its geographical complexities, its semantic evolutionary curve, and its interconnections in different fields. The aim is not to create a simple ‘map’, but rather to focus on the limits of the intellectual debate in defining and communicating virtue, and to envisage the understanding of the political functions of virtue through more popular and widespread media such as poetic texts. Despite its ever-changing meaning, virtue remains not only a keyword of political discourse over the century, but also stands as one of the very pillars on which powerful imageries of political communication were constructed. Therefore, this article provides a first step towards an analysis of political communication in eighteenth-century Italy, which, in subsequent studies, will take into account poetic sources, which at that time were regarded as an effective instrument to overcome the aforementioned intellectual limits and better exploit the possibilities of a rhetoric of virtue.

Two Sun over One Firmament Culture: A Political-Communication Analysis on the Contestation of Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur over “Indonesian Malay Communities”

This paper tries to extent a personal experience on an interesting discussion concerning the communication issues in Medan, North Sumatra. There is the inclination of the North Sumatrans to the news broadcasted by Kuala Lumpur and Medan’s tends to identify with its cultural similarities. For Jakarta is officially the center of political authority over the ‘Indonesian Malay Communities’, this dual cultural loyalty creates an imaginary phenomenon: ‘Two Suns’ in term of authoritative news resources that applies upon ‘One Firmament Culture’. This means that there is a divided news orientation among the Indonesian Malay Communities’ that put Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur in a tacit contestation. While until today this kind of contestation is still going on, the same features have brought me to the phenomenon of hierarchical communication structure. This vividly seen when we realize how lopsided is in nature the communication relations between the global authorities who have controlled the strategic means of communications as well as their contents with the rest of the world. For, in exception to technological matters, the Kuala Lumpurinclined of ‘the Indonesian Malay Communities’ in communication practices is based more on cultural aspects than their technical and political necessities words.
