Design of permanent magnet synchronous motors including thermal aspects

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to include thermal analysis in the design process of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The additional objective is a comparison of PMSM with induction motor (IM) in terms of thermal phenomena. Design/methodology/approach – Numerical investigation using commercial software MotorSolve was performed. Parameterized models of PMSM and IM were used. Calculations of motor parameters and temperature distribution were made using Finite Element Method. Findings – The results of the calculations show that thermal calculations should be included in the design process because the maximum permissible operating temperature of permanent magnets should not be exceeded. A comparative analysis of PMSM and IM shows that the PMSM has better parameters than the IM which was used as a base of the PMSM construction. Research limitations/implications – Computational models should be verified experimentally on a physical model or by using more complex numerical models. In the case of IM thermal calculations, a method of air speed calculation should be proposed. Air speed is a parameter that is necessary in thermal analysis of IM, but during the design process it is unknown. Originality/value – This paper presents modelling methodology of 3D transient thermal field coupled with electromagnetic field applied in a three-phase IM at rated load conditions. This paper presents a design strategy which includes thermal analysis of the designed PMSM. Moreover, the paper shows a comparison between PMSM and IM indicating advantages of PMSM over IM.

Modeling and Analysis of PMSMs under Inter Turn Short Faults

A model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with an inter turn short fault is proposed using a deformed flux model. The deformed flux model includes not only the fault winding flux information but also the inductance variation of the healthy winding considering the configuration of the winding distribution. With the deformed flux model and the positive sequence current assumption, the proposed model is derived in the positive and negative sequence synchronous reference frame (SRF). The finite elements method (FEM) simulation is applied to validate the proposed PMSM model with inter turn short fault.

Simulation and Analysis of PMSM Based on Space Vector Control Strategy

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) vector control strategy is studied deeply in the paper based on the analysis of the operation principle of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) speed-current double closed loop control system was built by Matlab/Simulink. The simulation results showed that the system had fast response speed, high accuracy and strong anti-interference ability and so on. It also proved that Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) vector control system had good dynamic and static performances.

Loss analysis of permanent-magnet synchronous motor using three-dimensional finite-element method with homogenization method

This paper describes an iron-loss analysis of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) taking into account lamination of iron core by a finite-element method (FEM) with a homogenization method. The detailed modeling of the laminated structure by the FEM with gap elements and double nodes requires a huge number of elements, which results in the limitation of the problem size. In order to reduce the computational costs, we apply the homogenization method to iron-loss analyses of a skewed interior PMSM and a surface permanent-magnet motor with overhanging magnet. For the clarification of the effectiveness, the homogenization method is compared with the detailed modeling from the viewpoints of computational costs and accuracy. As a consequence, it is verified that the homogenization method can analyze magnetic fields in a laminated iron core of a practical electric machine within acceptable computational costs.

Interior type permanent magnet synchronous motor analysis by equivalent circuits

Experimental tests show that steady-state core loss of interior-type permanent magnet machines changes with the terminal voltage in a peculiar way due to flux redistribution produced by armature reaction. An equivalent circuit is proposed to predict such loss through new parameters that can be easily determined by experimental tests. Different operating conditions of the motor such as under demagnetizing or magnetizing armature reaction effects and under saturation influence are included in the analysis. The new circuit allows a detailed representation of the interior-type permanent magnetic machines that can be usefully adopted in loss and efficiency computations.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>
