An Analysis of Non-Verbal Communication in Students' Speaking Performance

The aims of this study are to investigate the use of non-verbal communication in students’ speaking class and to describe the reasons of the use non-verbal communication in students’ speaking class at English Department, University of Kuningan. The participants of this study were three selected students of English education department who took public speaking subject in fourth semester. The study employed a qualitative research through a plying a case study design. To gain the data needed, two techniques were employed; observation and interview. The writer used observation field note to find out the types of non-verbal communication in students’ speech. Interview was conducted to answer the reasons toward the use of non-verbal communication in students’ speech. The data analysis showed that the most occur used non-verbal communication was gesture. Moreover, students’ prefer to use gesture and their eye contact to help them conveying message and as the complement to make their speech more interesting. It can be stated that non-verbal communication emphasize the students in delivering message to the audience while doing speech, in addition students were more confident when delivering their speech by using non-verbal communication.

Unlocking the Power of Voice for Financial Risk Prediction: A Theory-Driven Deep Learning Design Approach

Unstructured multimedia data (text and audio) provides unprecedented opportunities to derive actionable decision-making in the financial industry, in areas such as portfolio and risk management. However, due to formidable methodological challenges, the promise of business value from unstructured multimedia data has not materialized. In this study, we use a design science approach to develop DeepVoice, a novel nonverbal predictive analysis system for financial risk prediction, in the setting of quarterly earnings conference calls. DeepVoice forecasts financial risk by leveraging not only what managers say (verbal linguistic cues) but also how managers say it (vocal cues) during the earnings conference calls. The design of DeepVoice addresses several challenges associated with the analysis of nonverbal communication. We also propose a two-stage deep learning model to effectively integrate managers’ sequential vocal and verbal cues. Using a unique dataset of 6,047 earnings call samples (audio recordings and textual transcripts) of S&P 500 firms across four years, we show that DeepVoice yields remarkably lower risk forecast errors than that achieved by previous efforts. The improvement can also translate into nontrivial economic gains in options trading. The theoretical and practical implications of analyzing vocal cues are discussed.

Nonverbal Communication in Rituals on Irish Pilgrimage Routes

There are endless lists of academic publications on pilgrimage and on nonverbal communication, but very rarely if at all, do these two phenomena meet together in the same one, hence the author’s attempt to bring them together here. In this article the author discusses nonverbal communication in the context of pilgrimage rituals. Since rituals are carried out both physically and mentally, their performance requires the involvement of all the senses. A ritual may be verbal or nonverbal and very often is both. All elements of the ritual send a message. Thus, ritual communicates—it is a source of information about the individual retrieved by others—but it is not only that, as it also effects the mind, thoughts and spirituality of the individual. It has enormous influence on the well-being of a person; it is therapeutic. The author describes and analyzes single rituals related to the well, the tree, various kinds of stones, and other objects located on pilgrimage routes. While doing this, the author takes a phenomenological approach. She bases her analysis of nonverbal communication mainly on ethnographic materials. She also utilizes sources from the areas of archeology, anthropology, sociology and psychology. They are supplemented by her own participant observation at many pilgrimage places in Ireland over the period 1995–2012.

The Analysis of Nonverbal Communication: The Dangers of Pseudoscience in Security and Justice Contexts

For security and justice professionals (e.g., police officers, lawyers, judges), the thousands of peer-reviewed articles on nonverbal communication represent important sources of knowledge. However, despite the scope of the scientific work carried out on this subject, professionals can turn to programs, methods, and approaches that fail to reflect the state of science. The objective of this article is to examine (i) concepts of nonverbal communication conveyed by these programs, methods, and approaches, but also (ii) the consequences of their use (e.g., on the life or liberty of individuals). To achieve this objective, we describe the scope of scientific research on nonverbal communication. A program (SPOT; Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques), a method (the BAI; Behavior Analysis Interview) and an approach (synergology) that each run counter to the state of science are examined. Finally, we outline five hypotheses to explain why some organizations in the fields of security and justice are turning to pseudoscience and pseudoscientific techniques. We conclude the article by inviting these organizations to work with the international community of scholars who have scientific expertise in nonverbal communication and lie (and truth) detection to implement evidence-based practices.

This text adopts a nonconventional approach to the discovery of contemporary French society as it proposes humoristic comic strips as a point of departure to the discussion of social issues. The book is organized around eight main themes such as sports, public health, or working life. While the themes are typical of those found in mainstream textbooks’ cultural inserts, each explores more specific topics such as the transformation of urban life with the development of the Vélib’, or the debate around GMO and organic foods. Each main category includes five or six related topics with the following structure. The first two sections, Pour commencer and Comprendre, respectively, propose prereading activities and comprehension activities related to the study of the comic strip. Expressão não verbal do paciente no cuidado: percepção do enfermeiro em unidade cardiointensiva

Este estudo trata da percepção de enfermeiros relativa à observação, à identificação e à análise da comunicação não verbal para traduzir a reação e o sentimento do paciente. Realizado em 2009 em um hospital no Rio de Janeiro com quatorze enfermeiros. RESULTADOS: A comunicação não verbal foi citada no banho no leito (12%), pré-operatório (12%), pós-operatório (12%), admissão (12%), punção venosa (12%), visita familiar (8%), preparo de material (3%), dissecção venosa (3%), aspiração (3%), cardioversão (3%); 18% das enunciações não atendidas referem-se a situações de medo da morte (pré-operatório) e à incapacidade diante do abandono familiar. Os autores destacam que 7% dos pensamentos são representados por palavras, 38%, pela paralinguagem e 55%, pelos sinais corporais. CONSIDERAÇÕES: O enfermeiro observa, identifica e analisa a CNV para traduzir a reação, o sentimento do paciente e as necessidades a serem atendidas pelo cuidado.

Quantitative trait locus analysis of nonverbal communication in autism spectrum disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental syndrome marked by impairments in social interactive functioning and communication skills, and the presence of repetitive and restrictive behaviors. Twin and linkage studies provide evidence that ASD is heritable and genetically complex. Genetic analyses of familial quantitative traits in those with ASD may help to reveal underlying risk genes. We report a quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of nonverbal communication (NVC) in 228 families from the autism genetics resource exchange (AGRE) ascertained for at least two siblings with ASD. QTL at 1p13-q12, 4q21-25, 7q35, 8q23-24, and 16p12-13 indicate that genes at these loci may contribute to the variation in NVC among those with ASD. Using the criteria of Lander and Kruglyak, the QTL at 1p13-q12 is 'suggestive', while the other four are 'possible'. To assess whether these QTL are likely to harbor genes contributing specifically to the deficits in NVC, linkage analysis of ASD sibships with the most severe NVC scores was conducted. The sibships were identified by ordered-subset analyses (OSA), and families with the most severe NVC scores displayed lod scores of 3.4 at 8q23-24 and 3.8 at 16p12-13, indicating that these two regions are likely to harbor gene(s) contributing to ASD by predisposing to deficits in NVC.

Behind the Stage of Interacting Faces: Commentary on Case Study by Beatrice Beebe

This paper uses tools forged in the analysis of nonverbal communication to illuminate some dimensions of Beatrice Beebe's case description. It will also show how an awareness of postural dynamics can sharpen one's perception of long-term individual development. From this perspective, psychotherapy is a gradual reconstruction of how self-regulatory processes include themselves in interpersonal ones so as to support a relevant reformulation of representations. Psychotherapists who work with nonconscious dimensions are often efficient, but they do not always understand what really happened during their therapy sessions. What is exceptional with Beebe's work is her capacity to follow so many parallel events with an understanding that is technically, clinically, and humanly relevant.

The relevance of ethology for psychiatry

Darwin's evolutionary theory was the starting point for ethology, associated with an impact on scientific psychiatry. Psychiatry and ethology have common scientific and methodological prerequisites: inductive and deductive methods and "gestalt theory" as a basis for observing and describing behaviour patterns with subsequent causal analysis. There have been early endeavours to anchor ethological thinking in psychiatry but this tendency did not prevail for the following reasons: on the one hand, the methodology of ethology was immature or not applicable to man, whereas on the other hand the dominating experiential phenomenological school of Karl Jaspers and Kurt Schneider stressed the privileged position of human thinking, perception, and feeling. These fundamental categories of human existence did not appear amenable to any causal ethological analysis. Psychiatry and evolutionary biology were linked in an atrocious manner during the Nazi regime, both being abused for propaganda purposes and genocide. More recently, there is a "reconciliation" of both disciplines. In psychiatric nosology, operational, behaviour-oriented diagnostic systems have been introduced; ethology has opened up for theories of learning; new subsections like human ethology and sociobiology have evolved. The seeming incompatibility of (behavioural) biological psychiatry and experiential phenomenological psychopathology may be overcome on the basis of Konrad Lorenz' evolutionary epistemology. The functional analysis of human feeling and behaviour in psychotic disorders on the basis of Jackson's theory of the evolution and dissolution of the nervous system may serve as an example. The significance of an "ethological psychiatry" for diagnostic and therapeutical processes of psychiatric disorders derive from prognostic possibilities and the analysis of non-verbal communication in therapist-patient-interactions, but have not yet been systematically investigated.
