Effect of Accelerated Cyclic Aging on the Ballistic Properties of Composite Solid Propellant

Burn rate is a vital parameter of a propellant that highly influences the internal ballistics of a rocket motor. In the case of military applications of solid rocket motors, they are stored for a long duration, during which their performance deteriorates considerably due to aging. Conventionally, the accelerated isothermal technique is used for studying the effects of aging. However, in actual storage conditions, the temperature experienced by the propellant varies over time. In the present work, experimental investigations were carried out using accelerated cyclic and isothermal aging schemes. Here, the burn rates and temperature sensitivity of the propellant were recorded after the accelerated aging. A reduction in burn rates was observed in all aging techniques. There was a strong influence of the frequency of the aging cycle on burn rates. Theoretical analysis of motor performance indicates a reduction in chamber pressure to the tune of 18%, leading to deterioration of thrust by 20% and specific impulse by 2.5%. Remedies to recover the performance of the motor with aged propellant were explored, and throat inserts and thermal conditioning of aged motors were suggested as possible ways to overcome the aging effects.

This paper was submitted with significant similarity to ideas and applications presented in the thesis listed below. The paper includes a reference to the thesis, but there was no clear delineation between their work and previous work presented in the thesis. Two of the authors, Solmaz Kahourzade and Amin Mahmoudi were found to be responsible for the misconduct. This paper presents the design and performance analysis of a line-start permanent-magnet synchronous motor to overcome the efficiency and power factor deficiencies of induction motors. Proper start-up and synchronization are considered. An optimization algorithm is applied to improve the rotor bar resistance for the smooth line start of the motor. Dynamic d-q modeling and finite element analysis are performed to predict the transient and steady-state performances of the motor. Based on the presented optimized design, a 3-phase, 4-pole, 2 kW line-start permanent-magnet synchronous motor is fabricated and tested. Simulation and experimental results validate the improved performance of the proposed optimized motor.

Performance analysis of FEC based SR motor drive using fuzzy tuned PI controller

Purpose In this paper, a new front end converter (FEC) topology has been proposed for the switched reluctance (SR) motor drive. This study aims to present the performance analysis of FEC-based SR motor drive using various types of control schemes like conventional proportional integral (PI) controller, fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and fuzzy-tuned proportional integral controller (Fuzzy-PI). Design/methodology/approach The proposed FEC-based SR motor drive with various control strategies is derived for the torque ripple minimization and speed control. Findings The steady state and the dynamic response of the FEC-based SR motor drive are analyzed using three different controllers under change in speed and loading conditions. The Fuzzy-PI-based control scheme improves the dynamic response of the system when compared with the FLC and the conventional PI controller. Originality/value The hardware prototype has been implemented for the FEC-based SR motor drive by using the Xilinx SPARTAN 6 FPGA processor. The experimental verification has been conducted and the results have been measured under steady state and dynamic conditions.

Performance analysis of a permanent magnet synchronous motor with dual stator windings

This paper presents the modelling and performance analysis of a line-start three-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with dual stator windings. The machine has two sets of windings, main and auxiliary windings. The main winding is connected to the supply while the auxiliary is connected to a balanced capacitor. The dynamic model equations are derived in the d-q rotor reference frame using the concept of winding function theory. The machine input impedance was construed from the steady-state equations, where the effects of capacitance on the performance of the motor were studied. An improved torque was obtained when a suitable capacitance was connected to the auxiliary winding. A point of good performance was established by enhancing its direct axis reactance and the quadrature axis reactance which depend on the size of the capacitor. It is shown that thenew configuration has better performance characteristics when compared with those of the traditional configuration in terms of output power, torque density and efficiency.

Performance analysis of three-phase induction motor for railway propulsion system

A three-phase induction motor absorbs the most electric power among other electrical loads. Therefore, three-phase induction motors are the primary electric motors used in industrial applications thanks to their simple construction and easy operation, as well as low cost and low maintenance costs. Efficiency is a critical parameter that characterizes an induction motor as a traction motor. The traction motor is defined as the engine's effectiveness in converting electrical power at its input into mechanical energy by rotating torque on its axis. One way to analyze the efficiency is to use test data obtained from laboratory tests in case-loaded and no-load tests. Calculations using several formulas on the efficiency of an induction motor as a traction motor produce the same result, namely the efficiency of 98.6% by applying variable frequency drive (VFD). The result of laboratory tests and their analysis can be used as a reference for designing three-phase induction motors for railway traction motors, especially traction motors for high-speed trains<em>.</em>

Lentiviral Micro-dystrophin Gene Treatment into Late-stage mdx Mice for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Disease.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) results in a deficiency of dystrophin expression in patient muscle fibers, leading to progressive muscle degeneration. Treatment of DMD has undertaken current transformation with the advancement of novel gene therapy and molecular biology techniques, which are secure, well-tolerated, and effective therapeutic approaches. DMD gene therapies have mainly focused on young DMD patients as in vivo animal model trials have been performed in 0-1-month DMD mice. However, it has not yet been answered how micro-dystrophin encoding lentiviral treatment affects Dystrophin expression and DMD symptoms in 10-month mdx mice. We planned to integrate the micro-Dystrophin gene sequence into the muscle cells by viral transfer, using micro-Dystrophin-encoding lentivirus to reduce the dystrophic pathology in late-stage dmd mice. The histopathological and physiological-functional regeneration activities of the lentiviralmicro- Dystrophin gene therapy methods were compared, along with changes in temporal Dystrophin expression and their functionality, toxicity, and gene expression level. Here, we showed that the micro-dystrophin transgene transfers intramuscularly and intraperitoneally in late-stage dmd-mdx-4cv mice restored dystrophin expression in the skeletal and cardiac muscle (p <0.001). Furthermore, motor performance analysis, including hanging and tracking tests, improved statistically significantly after the treatment (p <0.05). Consequently, this study suggests that patients in the late stages of muscular dystrophy can benefit from lentiviral micro-dystrophin gene therapies to present an improvement in dystrophic muscle pathology.

Performance Analysis and Control of a Capacitor Start Induction Motor

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study on the performance characteristics of a capacitor start induction motor. The objective of the study is to understand the starting torque, starting current, and speed control of the motor under different loads and input voltages. The experimental setup consists of a capacitor start induction motor, a tachometer, an ammeter, a voltmeter, a wattmeter, and a load. The motor is started by applying the input voltage to the stator winding, and the centrifugal switch disconnects the starting winding after the motor reaches a certain speed. The capacitor provides a phase shift in the current and voltage waveforms, which helps to start the motor. The motor performance is measured using the tachometer, ammeter, voltmeter, and wattmeter, and the data is analyzed to understand the efficiency and performance characteristics of the motor. The experimental results show that the motor can provide a high starting torque and efficient speed control with the use of a capacitor. The study provides practical insights into the performance characteristics and control of the capacitor start induction motor, and can be used to improve the energy efficiency of the motor in various applications.

Now a day’s Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are more popular because of its good electrical and mechanical property. These motors are now changing to brushed DC motors and induction motors in various applications. The main problem that occurs in the traditional PID controller is that the parameters obtained from the drive control system of the BLDC servo motor cannot produce a steady state under various operating conditions such as adjusted gain plus transient response and parameter variation, load disturbance. So a fuzzy controller provides good speed response for start-up. In this paper how the design and simulation of ANFIS controller is better for the performance of brushless DC motor (BLDC) servomotor as well as the design and implementation of ANFIS controller and its performance are compared is shown. The capability of BLDC servomotor based on Fuzzy, ANFIS and PID controller is investigated under different operating conditions. Paper represents the PID controller and fuzzy controller to demonstrate error tracking capability and usefulness of ANFIS controller in control applications. By using the PID, Fuzzy and ANFIS controller we can implement, analyze the overall performance of brushless DC motor. Finite element method based design and performance analysis of universal motor for agro applications

A universal motor is one that is capable of operating on either AC or DC power supply. The commutator is a component of the motor that has a significant impact on how efficiently the motor operates. It is essential to conduct an analysis of the pole structure of the universal motor in order to investigate the many aspects. The parametric study of a universal motor with a rating of 1 horsepower and 15,000 revolutions per minute that was designed with various combinations of brush angle and pole embrace factor for use in agricultural applications. The purpose of this study is to improve the effectiveness of the motor while preserving the ideal tolerance range for the model's other parameters as much as possible. The approach now allows for a greater degree of personalization for each distinct combination of factors. With the assistance of the finite element method (FEM), the transient solution is carried out so that the performance of the motor can be evaluated more accurately. The model that has been designed provides major design improvements, one of which is an improved average torque.

Two-year motor outcomes associated with the dose of NICU based physical therapy: The Noppi RCT

BackgroundInterventions involving both the parent and the preterm infant have demonstrated lasting effects on cognitive outcomes, but motor effects are less salient. It remains unclear when to commence early intervention and if dosages have impact on motor outcomes. AimsTo examine the effect on motor performance at 24-months corrected age following a parent-administered intervention performed with infants born preterm in the NICU. Intervention dosing and longitudinal motor performance were also analyzed. Study designSingle-blinded randomized multicenter clinical trial. Subjects153 infants born, gestational age ≤ 32 weeks at birth, were randomized into intervention or control group. Outcome measuresInfant Motor Performance Screening Test, Test of Infant Motor Performance, Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2. ResultsNo significant difference was found between the intervention and the control group assessed with the PDMS-2 at 24-months CA. However, a significant positive association was found between dosing and the Gross Motor and Total Motor PDMS-2 scores. Analysis of longitudinal motor performance showed a decreasing motor performance between 6- and 24-months corrected age in both groups. ConclusionsThere was no difference in motor performance between groups at 24-months corrected age. However, increased intervention dosage was positively associated with improved motor outcome.

Design and performance analysis of a high-efficiency Y3 induction motor

Induction motors have been applied in industrial domain, agriculture, transportation, national defence industry and other industries because of their advantages of simple structure, small inertia, low cost and long time working at high speed and high temperature. In this paper, particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is applied to the optimal design of Y3 series asynchronous motors to achieve the highest efficiency. Secondly, the RMxprt module of Ansoft was used to design a Y3 high-efficiency induction motor with a certain power level using particle swarm optimization (PSO). Maxwell module was used to carry out finite element analysis to calculate the magnetic density and flux distribution of stator and rotor. The simulation results of stator current, flux, induction voltage and transient torque show that the performance indexes of Y3 induction motor designed in this paper meet the design requirements which verify the rationality of the design.

Long-term functional recovery in patients with custom-made 3D-printed anatomical pelvic prostheses following bone tumor excision

BackgroundAnatomical custom-made prostheses make it possible to reconstruct complicated bone defects following excision of bone tumors, thanks to 3D-printed technology. To date, clinical measures have been used to report clinical-functional outcome and provide evidence for the effectiveness of this new surgical approach. However, there are no studies that quantified the achievable recovery during common activities by using instrumental clinical-functional evaluation in these patients. Research questionWhat is the motor performance, functional outcome and quality of life in patients with custom-made 3D-printed pelvic prostheses following bone tumor? MethodsTo analyze motor performance, six patients performed motion analysis during five motor activities at follow-up of 32 ± 18 months. Joint angles, ground reaction forces and joint moments of the operated and contralateral limbs were compared. On-off activity of lower-limb muscles were calculated from electromyography and compared to a healthy matched population. To analyze functional outcome and quality of life, differences in measured hip abductor strength between limbs were evaluated, as well as clinical-functional scores (Harris Hip Score, Barthel Index, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score), and quality of life (SF-36 health survey). ResultsWe found only slight differences in joint kinematics when comparing operated and contralateral limb. The activity of gluteal muscles was normal, while hamstrings showed out-of-phase activities. Ground reaction forces and hip moments showed asymmetries between limbs, particularly in more demanding motor activities. We found a mean difference in hip abductor strength of 48 ± 82 N between limbs, good clinical-functional scores, and quality of life scores within normative. SignificanceOur study showed optimal long-term results in functional recovery, mainly achieved through recovery of the gluteal function, although minor impairments were found, which may be considered for future improvement of this innovative surgery. The effect of a more loaded contralateral limb on internal loads and long-term performance of the implant remains unknown and deserves further investigation.

Extensive performance investigation of Luo converter‐based modified firefly maximum point tracking algorithm for permanent magnet synchronous motor‐driven photovoltaic pumping system

AbstractThis research paper deals the practical performance analysis of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drives‐based photovoltaic (PV) pumping applications. A modified firefly algorithm (MFA) based maximum power point tracker (MPPT) with Luo converter is employed. In this research work, equated to classical Firefly algorithm, the degree of attractiveness (α) has been updated in each iteration number with rejection of coefficients of absorption (β) as well as random movement factor (γ) to achieve faster PV tracked efficiency with rapid convergence velocity. Vector‐oriented inverter control strategy depending on solar irradiance has been used for controlling the rate of converter/water flow. The proposed standalone PV pumping system has been tested under highly weather fluctuating conditions which provide efficient, accurate and feasible option for water pumping in remote areas. Experimental results have been justified using dSPACE (DS1104) practical environment.
