Heavy metal concentrations in surface waters of Hurghada and environs, Red Sea Coast, Egypt, and their correlation with sediment distribution

This study investigates the properties and chemistry of surface water in Hurghada and its adjacent areas, with a focus on assessing the potential impact of human activities on water quality by measuring the concentrations of heavy metals in surface water samples. A total of fifty-nine surface water samples were collected and analyzed for various heavy metals, including manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) using the AAS technique.The results indicate that at the Desert Rose Resort transect, the average total concentrations of heavy metals were within the following ranges: Fe (average of 26.96 μg/L), Cu (average of 0.61 μg/L), Zn (average of 6.31 μg/L), and Pb (average of 0.75 μg/L). Conversely, at the Abu-Shaar transect, Ni (0.87 μg/L) and Cd (average of 0.02 μg/L) were the dominant heavy metals, while Mn exhibited the highest mean value (1.80 μg/L) at the El-Samaka Village transect. Notably, Hg was not detected in any of the samples within the study areas.Comparative analysis of heavy metal concentrations in Hurghada's surface waters with data from the Red Sea coast and other global regions reveals that the study areas maintain heavy metal concentrations well below the maximum permissible values for the marine environment. These findings suggest that human activities have not significantly impacted heavy metal levels in the region's surface waters.Additionally, statistical assessments, such as correlation coefficients (r), were employed to explore the relationships between heavy metal concentrations in water and sediment. These relationships provide valuable insights into the dynamic balance of elements within the sediment and their potential direct or indirect transfer into the water.

Analysis of Heavy Metals Concentration and Pollution Index on Water Quality in Labuan Beach Fishery Port Area, Banten

Labuan Coastal Fishing Port (PPP) is an area with great potential for development in the economic and tourism sectors. Apart from being the center of the fishing industry in Pandeglang Regency, PPP Labuan also has beach tourist attractions. Some activities could cause the entry of heavy metals into waters and affect water quality. These activities include ships refuelling, ships exhaust emissions, ships washing and paint spills, as well as beach tourism activities. The pollution index is used to determine the level of pollution in waters. This research aimed to analyze water quality and pollution indices based on the heavy metals content iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu). Samples were taken from three observation stations, namely the beach tourist area (station 1), the fish auction site (station 2), and the pier (station 3). Analysis of the heavy metals Fe, Ni, Cu was carried out using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer method and the results were compared with Indonesian government reulation, PP No. 82/2001. Pollution index analysis wasusing the pollution index method. The heavy metals content of iron (Fe) ranged from 1.761 – 6.907 mg/L, nickel (Ni) ranged from 0.079 – 0.269 mg/L, and copper (Cu) is < 0.001 mg/L. Based on the pollution index (IP), station 1 was lightly polluted with an IP value of 3.75. At station 2 it was moderately polluted with an IP value of 5.91, and at station 3 it was lightly polluted with a value of 4.2.

Bioconcentration of Plumbum (Lead) and Cadmium on mangrove crab Scylla spp. in mangrove ecosystem Passo Ambon Indonesia

Mangrove crab (Scylla spp.) is one of the potential fishery commodities of Maluku Province, which is in high demand because of delicious and nutritious and has selling and export value. This research conducted on the Passo mangrove ecosystems, in May-July 2021. The aims were to analyze the concentration of heavy metals Pb (lead) and Cd (cadmium) in water, sediment and mangrove crabs; and to analyze bioconcentrations and its pollutant categories. Samples of water, sediment and mangrove crabs were taken and captured in the mangrove ecosystems of Passo (Station 1) and at three substations using the purposive sampling method. The treatment of water samples, sediment and mangrove crabs from nature follows the standards of handling samples for analysis of heavy metal concentrations in each medium. The concentration of heavy metals in each medium was analyzed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed that the value of the concentration of Pb in Passo was still at the detection limit; concentrations in sediments have exceeded the detection limit; and the concentration of mangrove crabmeat has exceeded the detection limit. The value of Cd concentrations in water of Passo was still at the limit detection value; concentrations in sediments have exceeded the detection limit; while concentration on mangrove crabmeat was still relatively low but indicated accumulation. Bioconcentration Factor indicates the accumulation of PB and Cd metals was relatively low (<100).

Analysis of Heavy Metals Concentration in Textile Wastewater in Batik Industry Center

The textile industry is the main source of environmental pollution in terms of quality and quantity. It consumes large amounts of water (200 m3/ tonne of products), and around 90% of the quantity is wastewater. Improper disposal of textile wastewater will cause serious environmental problems due to the presence of heavy metals in the waste which will adversely affect aquatic organisms. To analyze, the concentration of heavy metals in textile (batik) wastewater was collected from 15 small, medium, and large-scale textile industry waste disposal centers located at the Batik Industry Center of Kampoeng Batik Laweyan Surakarta, Indonesia August 2019. Standard methods of 22nd Edition 2012 APHA -AWWA-WEF with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was used to analyze the concentration of Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb) and Nickel (Ni) in the sample. The results of the analysis showed that from 15 sample locations, several locations had levels of Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, and Cd below the detection limit, i.e. 2 (&lt;0.01 ppm), 13 (&lt;0.02 ppm), 13 (&lt;0.01 ppm), 15 (&lt;0.01 ppm), and 15 (&lt;0.02 ppm) locations for each metal respectively, while Fe levels were above the detection limit at all locations. The mean levels and number of locations for Fe, Cu, Pb, and Ni were 2.63 ± 5.01 (n = 15), 0.48 ± 0.99 (n = 13), 0.05 ± 0.03 (n = 2) and 0.02 ± 0.00 (n = 2) and the ranges of each metal level were 0.07-19.4 ppm, 0.01-3.73 ppm, 0.02-0.07 ppm, and 0.01-0.02 ppm respectively. Among these heavy metals, the highest concentration was Fe, and all samples had Cr and Pb levels below the detection limit. By comparing the results of this study with the safe limit for industrial wastewater according to Central Java Provincial Regulation No. 5 of 2012, only wastewater originating from two sampling locations can be used for irrigation and aquaculture, namely at locations B2 and B5

Comparative Analysis of Heavy Metals Concentration in Soil and Vegetable (Vernonia amygdalina) Collected from Two Sampling Sites (Farmland and Dumpsite) and the Effect on Plant DNA

Different studies have shown that Vernonia amygdalina is enriched with proteins, fats, fibres, amino acids, minerals vitamins, and carbohydrates but no record yet on the level of heavy metals in Vernonia amygdalina collected from Ojota (dumpsite) and Badagry (control) in Lagos state. Samples of V. amygdalina were collected and analyzed for metals using standard method, while differences in concentrations were analyzed using t-test analysis at level of significance set at p=0.05. The results recorded in mg/100g for the metals content (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) in the plant across the two stations were not significantly different (p&gt;0.05). The Zn in leaf and stem (100.157 ±1.351, 45.743± 3.664) respectively from dumpsite were significantly higher than that of farmland (91.468 ± 2.386, 35.505 ±1.662). Also, Zn content in the root from farmland (73.671 ±2.205) was higher than that of dumpsite (69.515 ± 2.312). All the values of N, P and K recorded in the leaf, stem and roots of bitter leaf from both sites were different significantly (p&lt;0.05). The most frequent nutrient in the leaf, stem and root of the bitter leaf was K, followed by N while the least was P. In contrast, the root contained the highest K, followed by the leaf and then the stem. The DNA band of V. amygdalina from both sites showed no alteration. In conclusion, bitter leaves from both sites were rich in minerals (N, P, and K) though their values were higher at the dumpsites. However, heavy metals content in V. amygdalina at both sites being within standard permissible limits imply it is safe for human consumption.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STUDY OF HEAVY METALS POLLUTING FROM THE ENVIRONMENT, BY ATOMIC SPECTROMETRY

"In this scientific work are presented a part of the results included in the thesis entitled "Contributions to the study of heavy polluting elements from the environment by atomic spectrometry" which includes the innovative contributions to the study of the distribution of heavy metals in acacia leaves collected from Dâmbovița county and neighboring counties and the distribution of heavy metals from surface and deep soil collected from the main oil parks in Dâmbovița county. In the analysis of heavy metal concentrations in the studied samples, the spectrometric techniques were used: Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (EDXRF), which were successfully optimized and provided valuable information used in following studies, to assess degree of heavy metal pollution of the environment. These methods were used in a complementary way with the biomonitoring technique in order to have as complete information as possible of the elemental composition of the analyzed samples."

Analysis of Heavy Metal Concentrations of Lead (Pb) in Fishermen in Junganyar Village Based on Length of Work Using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer Method

Heavy metals are natural components that cannot be destroyed. Lead (Pb) in the oceans comes from activities from ship repair, mining activities, shipbuilding, land and sea transportation activities, to household and urban waste. This study was conducted to determine the levels of lead (Pb) in urine and their relationship to the working period of fishermen. This study used an experimental type of research with 16 urine samples and was carried out in June-July 2022 at the Chemistry Laboratory of the Technology Study Program, the Medical Laboratory of the University of Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo and the FMIPA Laboratory of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. Examination using SSA measurement. The data analysis method used the Pearson and Spearman correlation statistical test. Pearson correlation test obtained a correlation coefficient value of lead (Pb) of 0.208 (positive value for the category of very weak correlation) with a significance of 0.439, so it can be concluded that there is no relationship between heavy metals lead (Pb) in urine with fisherman's tenure.

Comparative Analysis of Heavy Metals Concentration in Soil and Vegetable (Celosia argentea) Collected from Two Sampling Sites and Their Effect on the Plant’s DNA Stability

This study investigated the quantities of heavy metals including cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn)in soil samples and in the organs (leaf, stem and root) of Celosia argentea collected from a dumpsite (at Ojota) and a farmland (at Badagry) in Lagos, Nigeria. Additionally, the macroelement content of the soils and the effect of heavy metal soil contamination on C. argentea DNA stability was analysed. Heavy metals and NPK concentrations in the soil samples and organs of C. argentea were evaluated using standard techniques. The results of this study revealed that the microelement were more abundant in the soil collected from the dumpsite. Likewise, all the heavy metals (Cd,Cr,Cu,Pb and Zn) investigated in this study were detected in higher quantities in the dumpsite soil. Notably, the concentration of the metals was within the WHO/FAO limits in the soils collected from both sampling sites save Zn which was 660.260 mg/kg and 449.180mg/kg in the dumpsite and farmland respectively. The concentration of heavy metals in the C. argentea organs in this research were higher in samples collected from the dumpsite and Zn was the most accumulated on both the dumpsite and farmland. The highest amount (95.987 mg/kg) of Zn was by C. argentea root collected from the dumpsite while the least amount (15.380 mg/kg) was detected in C. argentea stem collected from the farmland. The DNA base pairs were not visibly fragmented in the samples C. argentea collected from the control and dumpsite sites. Although most of the heavy metals detected in C. argentea were in negligible quantities, the soils and the vegetable appear to be Zn-contaminated and unsafe for consumption. One of the most popular crops with a unique role in human diets especially in Nigeria is Solanum Lycopersicum. The study investigated the levels of heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb)and zinc(Zn) and nutrients(nitrogen (N), phosphorus(P) and potassium(K) in the leaf, stem and root of Solanum lycopersicum and soil collected from dumpsite (in Ojota) and Farmland (in Badagry) in Lagos, Nigeria and their effects on S. lycopersicum using DNA analysis. The results recorded in mg/100g showed that only the value of Zn in stem of S. lycopersicum from farmland (77.671 ± 2.193) was significantly higher than that of dumpsite (72.169 ± 1.656) while Zn in the root S. lycopersicum from farmland (66.556 ± 0.613) was significantly lower than that of dumpsite (71.760±2.699). The values of K in the stem and root, P in the leaf, and N in the stem and root were higher in samples from farmland, while samples from dumpsite had higher value of N in leaf, P in stem and root and K in leaf. Only, Zn in the soil was significantly higher (p&lt;0.05) at dumpsite than farmland. The values of N, P and K in soil from dumpsite were higher (p&lt;0.05) than that from farmland. The DNA bands of the Solanum lycopersicum from control site and dumpsite site have no alteration. In conclusion, all the metal levels did not exceed World Health Organization limits and thus S. lycopersicum is safe for human consumption.

Comparative Analysis of Heavy Metals Concentration in Soil and Vegetable (Capsicum annum) Collected from Two Sampling Sites (Farmland and Dumpsite) and the Effect on Plant DNA

The levels of heavy metals and their effect on the DNA of Capsicum annuum collected from dumpsite (in Ojota) and farmland (in Badagry) in Lagos, Nigeria, were examined using standard procedures.&#x0D; The results of concentration of heavy metals in the soil for the farmland and dumpsite respectively are: Zn (882.0 ±0.006mg/kg, 14316.8±1.009mg/kg), Cr (2.006 ±0.002mg/kg,3.888± 0.002mg/kg), Cd (0.098 ± 0.001mg/kg, 0.644 ± 0.002mg/kg), Cu (0.206± 0.001mg/kg, 0.997 ± 0.001mg/kg) and Pb (0.005 ± 0.003mg/kg, 0.843± 0.002mg/kg) respectively. The values of N (3153.6± 0.008mg/kg, 4191.2± 0.006mg/kg), P (7598.3 ± 0.009mg/kg, 8794.5 ± 0.003mg/kg) and K (113.56 ± 0.004mg/kg, 532.12 ± 0.004mg/kg) were recorded in the soil from farmland and dumpsite respectively. While the values of N, P, and K in soil from dumpsite were higher (p&lt;0.05) than that from farmland, the only value of Zn in the soil of dumpsite was significantly higher than in soil from farmland. Similarly, the values of all metals except Zn recorded in the leaf, stem, and root of C. annuum showed no significant difference between the sample collected from dumpsites and farmland. The values of Zn in leaf, stem, and root of C. annuum from farmland were significantly higher (p&lt;0.05) than that of the dumpsite. The DNA bands of the Capsicum annuum from the control site have a clearer band spectrum than that from the dumpsite site, however, there was no DNA mutation. In conclusion, C. annuum collected from both farmland (in Badagry) and dumpsite (in Ojota) contained minerals and heavy metals whose concentrations were still within standard permissible limits. Thus, C. annuum from both sites is safe for human consumption.

Spatial distribution and pattern of heavy metals in urban soils of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Heavy metals contamination is becoming a global problem in urban areas. With that, understanding spatial distribution and pattern of heavy metals in urban soils is a crucial step toward sustainable urban development. This study intends to assess the spatial distribution and pattern of four heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd) in Yogyakarta City outward in the boundaries of Sleman and Bantul Regencies. In relation, we utilized geostatistical method Empirical Bayesian Kriging (EBK) then correlated to Land Cover/Use data for the spatial analysis of heavy metals concentration. The degree of contamination was quantified using indices - PI (Pollution Index), Igeo (Geo-accumulation Index), and PLI (Pollution Load Index). We show that by analysing the Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd elements of 168 urban soils samples collected, Yogyakarta City, a densely populated area, serves as a place of heavy metals contamination hotspots. Pb and Cu is posed as moderately contaminated, whereas Zn and Cd is considered as uncontaminated (as majority of Zn and Cd values does not exceed the background values). But in overlapping consideration of four heavy metals contamination, they are classified as moderately contaminated (PLI=1.10). In summary, heavy metals contamination in soils varies as a function of urbanization.

Groundwater Quality Monitoring Using In-Situ Measurements and Hybrid Machine Learning with Empirical Bayesian Kriging Interpolation Method

This article discusses the assessment of groundwater quality using a hybrid technique that would aid in the convenience of groundwater (GW) quality monitoring. Twenty eight (28) GW samples representing 62 barangays in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines were analyzed for their physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal (HM) concentrations. The 28 GW samples were collected at suburban sites identified by the coordinates produced by Global Positioning System Montana 680. The analysis of heavy metal concentrations was conducted onsite using portable handheld X-Ray Fluorescence (pXRF) Spectrometry. Hybrid machine learning—geostatistical interpolation (MLGI) method, specific to neural network particle swarm optimization with Empirical Bayesian Kriging (NN-PSO+EBK), was employed for data integration, GW quality spatial assessment and monitoring. Spatial map of metals concentration was produced using the NN-PSO-EBK. Another, spot map was created for observed metals concentration and was compared to the spatial maps. Results showed that the created maps recorded significant results based on its MSEs with values such as 1.404 × 10−4, 5.42 × 10−5, 6.26 × 10−4, 3.7 × 10−6, 4.141 × 10−4 for Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, respectively. Also, cross-validation of the observed and predicted values resulted to R values range within 0.934–0.994 which means almost accurate. Based on these results, it can be stated that the technique is efficient for groundwater quality monitoring. Utilization of this technique could be useful in regular and efficient GW quality monitoring.

Selection of Best Soft Computing Systems for the Analysis of Heavy Metal Concentration in Soils of a Waste Disposal Site in Khulna

Collection of soil samples is labored, time-consuming and the determination of heavy metal concentrations in the laboratory are expensive. The aim of this study was to fix the functions, algorithms as well as optimization of methods for soft computing system such as ANFIS, SVM, and ANN based on their best performance. In this study, soil samples were collected from eighty five distinct locations in and around of a selected open disposal site at old Rajbandh, Khulna, Bangladesh at a depth 0-30 cm from the existing ground surface. In the laboratory, the concentration of heavy metals such as Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, Cd, As, Sc, Hg, Mn, Cr, Ti, Sb, Sr, V and Ba in soils were measured. The soft computing systems such as ANFIS, SVM, and ANN were implemented for the analysis of heavy metal concentrations in soil. The result reveals model with SCP, gaussmf, linear and hybrid was the best-fitted model of ANFIS. In addition, in SVM analysis, the model SVM-RBF with 15 folds was selected. In ANN, the model LT (Levenberg-Marqardt and Tansig functions) with neuron structure 2-10-1 was selected. The accuracy of the predicted results was checked based on the acceptable limits of prediction parameters such as R value, RMSE, MAPE, GRI and percentage recovery. The result demonstrates that ANFIS model was a reliable technique than that of other counterparts of SVM and ANN with the acceptable degree of robustness and accuracy. Therefore, the performance of soft computing systems may be expressed by the sequence of ANFIS &gt; SVM &gt; ANN. Here it can be noted that one can easily be computed the concentration of a particular heavy metal in soil by inserting GPS values (latitude and longitude) only in the developed rule viewer of ANFIS.

Water Quality Assessment of Roof-collected Rainwater in Miri, Malaysia

Rainwater harvesting systems are becoming more acceptable as an alternative method to harvest water sources for both potable and non-potable uses. While the method has proven to be very simplistic and cost-effective, the collected rainwater source remains untreated and can pose serious health concerns if not used properly. This study focused on the physicochemical and heavy metal parameters of roof-collected rainwater in Miri, Sarawak. Individual sites were chosen throughout Miri, Sarawak for representative samples. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy was used for the analysis of heavy metal concentrations. Heavy metal analysis included manganese, zinc, iron, copper, and cadmium. pH, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), nitrate, and fluoride were among the physicochemical parameters examined. Seasonal comparison indicated the majority of the higher concentration levels occurred during the wet season. The overall mean concentration for the physicochemical parameters indicated CLASS I usage, with the exception of BOD5, which was CLASS III usage. The overall mean concentration for metals analyzed indicated a CLASS I usage threshold with the exception of copper, which had concentrations well above the 0.02mg/L threshold for all sites. Thus, copper was considered one of the major contaminants for this study. Moreover, the types of storage tanks also showcased key findings. Open top storage tanks are more vulnerable to contamination than closed storage tanks. Metal storage tanks offer higher rainwater temperatures in comparison to other types of storage tanks.
