Osi Island is included in the leading tourist destinations of Western Seram Regency. The island has a major attraction, namely a mangrove forest along a wooden bridge with a length of 1,300 meters. The problems in this study are that there is no clean water, some facilities are not good, access in ecotourism areas such as bridges and trails are starting to have holes. The purpose of this study is to determine the existing condition of mangrove ecotourism, as well as to analyze the value of suitability and carrying capacity of mangrove ecotourism areas. This study uses descriptive analysis methods, visitor perception analysis, suitability analysis and area carrying capacity analysis. The results obtained are that the existing condition of the Osi Island mangrove forest ecotourism has cool forest conditions along the bridge and clean sea views, but the access (trails and bridges) to Osi Island is still damaged and there are supporting facilities and infrastructure that are already available. The total score of the results of the mangrove ecotourism condition of Osi Island is included in the S2 category (Appropriate), with a total score of 68 and a tourism suitability index of 78%, meaning that it can be used for ecotourism activities and the carrying capacity of the mangrove ecotourism area on Osi Island is 409 people per day

Spatial Patterns of Tourism: Towards Legally-Based Tourism Village Regulations Based on Physical Carrying Capacity Analysis

Lowita Beach was a tourist area in Suppa District, Pinrang Regency, with 11 tourist attractions. The annual increase in visitors to Lowita Beach can compromise tourist comfort and damage the area's natural habitat. This is the basis for researchers to analyse the Physical Carrying Capacity (PCC) of Lowita Beach. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of tourist activities, assess the physical carrying capacity of the area, and formulate the role of tourist villages in managing the Lowita Beach area. The research approach used was research and development, as initiated by Borg and Gall: the calculation of Physical Carrying Capacity (PCC), area parameters, and the number of tourists. The study population comprised 93 tourists who visited the Lowita Beach area. Data was collected through the completion of questionnaires, interviews, measurements, and field observations. A quantitative-descriptive approach was used for data analysis. The Physical Carrying Capacity (PCC) analysis reveals that Lowita Beach's ideal capacity is 1 visitor per day, yet it currently hosts an average of 35 visitors daily, significantly surpassing this threshold. This overcapacity indicates that the beach is experiencing environmental strain and underscores the need for management strategies to align visitor numbers with sustainable limits. In conclusion, despite the physical carrying capacity (PCC) of Lowita Beach being 17 visitors per day, the present daily visitor count suggests that the beach is currently facing overcrowding, albeit not to a significant extent. Hence, it is necessary to implement policy interventions from the tourist villages of Tasiwalie and Wiringtasi, which should include the establishment of standardized operating procedures and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, in order to ensure sustainable tourism management at Lowita Beach.

Analysis of load carrying capacity of bridges strengthened by extracorporeal prestressing after five years of operation: a case study

PurposeThe application of reinforcing old bridges by adding external prestressed steel bundles is becoming more and more widespread. However, the long-term safety performance test of the strengthening method is rarely carried out. In this paper, the bearing capacity of a 420 m prestressed concrete (PC) continuous girder bridge after five years of strengthening is analyzed.Design/methodology/approachThe bridge model of the bridge structure and strengthening scheme is established by the finite element software of the bridge. The theoretical load-bearing capacity of the bridge under the latest standard load grade is obtained by finite element analysis. The actual bearing capacity of the bridge is obtained by field test. Through the comparative analysis of theory and practice, the health state of the bridge after five years of reinforced operation is judged. The damage to the overall stiffness and external prestressing of the bridge is also analyzed.FindingsThe results of deflection and strain show that the stiffness and strength of the secondary side span and the middle span decrease slightly, and the maximum reduction of bearing capacity is 4.5%. The static stiffness of the whole bridge decreases as a result of cracks, and the maximum decrease is 21%. In the past five years, the relaxation loss of the external prestressing of the bridge is 3.31–3.97%, which is the main reason for the decrease in bearing capacity.Originality/valueThrough the joint analysis of the bridge stiffness and the loss of external prestressing, the strengthening condition of the bridge after five years of operation is effectively analyzed. The strengthening effect of the external prestressed steel beam strengthening method is analyzed, which can provide a reference for similar bridge strengthening.

Study of Land's Carrying Capacity on The Availability and Need For Staple Foods in The City of Mataram

Increasing the area of rice fields, harvest area, planting area, rice productivity and rice production can increase the availability of staple foods. This aims of this study 1) to analyze the carrying capacity of agricultural land in supporting food security in Mataram City. 2) to determine the availability and need for staple food (rice) in Mataram City. The research method used quantitative descriptive methods using secondary data from the Central Statistics Agency of City of Mataram and other related agencies in Mataram City in 2023. Data was analysed using land carrying capacity analysis and analysis of the availability and demand for rice in the City of Mataram. The results of the research showed that 1) the carrying capacity of agricultural land in the City of Mataram is 0.0231 or less than 1, meaning that the need for rice in the City of Mataram has not been able to be met from the existing agricultural land area and the current rice production, 2) The availability of rice in the City Mataram in 2023 is 13,510.83 tonnes, while the demand for rice is 67,980.76 tonnes, resulting in a shortage (deficit) of rice demand of 54,469.93 tonnes or a deficit in rice availability of 400%.

This research aims to assess the suitability and physical carrying capacity of Yanain Beach in Hulaliu State, Pulau Haruku District, Central Maluku Regency as a tourist destination. The methodology employed in this study involved a survey, collecting both primary and secondary data through direct field observations. Primary data included visual observations and measurements at Station 1 and Station 2, as well as interviews with visitors to the beach area. Data analysis utilized tourism suitability index and physical carrying capacity of the beach area. Yanain Beach covers an area of 2.14 hectares with a sandy beach width of 18.76 meters, providing ample space for tourist activities. Additionally, it features a relatively shallow depth (1.48 meters), slow current velocity (0.0847 m/s), and high water clarity (>80%), making it an attractive tourist destination. Based on the calculated values, it was concluded that Yanain Beach in Hulaliu Village is "Highly Suitable" for various tourism activities, with an average TSI score of 92.25%. Furthermore, the analysis of the beach's carrying capacity indicated that the area can accommodate 641 people per day for recreation purposes, and 407 people per day for swimming and bathing activities at the beach.

The Potential of Coral Reef as Support of Marine Ectourisme at Sidodadi Village, Pesawaran Regency, Province of Lampung

Coral reefs can be used for marine ecotourism by considering suitability and carrying capacity analysis. The aim of this research is to analyze the potential of coral as a support for marine ecotourism in Sidodadi Village, Teluk Pandan District, Pesawaran Regency, Province of Lampung. Data collection on the percentage of cover and type of growth (life form) of coral was carried out using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method, while coral fish used the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. The results of the research show that the physico-chemical parameter conditions of the waters are suitable for marine ecotourism, coral cover ranges from 0,12-78,03%, 523 reef fish consist of 7 major fish families, 5 target fish families and 1 indicator fish family, suitability tourism at each station in the research location where station 1 is 59,25% (Conditionally Appropriate), station 2 is less than 40,74% (Not Appropriate), station 3 is 88,88% (Suitable) and station 4 is 59,25% (Conditionally Appropriate). The area's carrying capacity is 106 people/day and the utilization carrying capacity is 11 people/day.

Analysis of The Potential and Carrying Capacity of Lusi Sidoarjo Island as An Education and Conservation-Based Ecotourism

The mangrove ecosystem of Lusi Sidoarjo Island has uniqueness and beauty with great potential to be developed as an education and conservation-based tourism. The main step that can be taken in efforts to develop mangrove tourism is identifying regional conditions and potentials through carrying capacity analysis. Carrying capacity analysis is needed to anticipate excess visitors who can potentially cause damage to the tourism environment. This study carried out in June – July 2022, aimed to analyze the potential and carrying capacity of mangrove ecosystems on Lusi Island as an education and conservation-based tourism. The method used in this study is descriptive quantitative by collecting data through observation, interviews, and field surveys. The calculation was made to determine the carrying capacity of the area. The results showed that the area's carrying capacity was 360 visitors/day with a diverse potential for mangroves, flora, fauna, and abundant content of metals and minerals based on XRD and XRF analysis, and literature studies. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be interpreted that Lusi Sidoarjo Island has a great amount of potential to be developed as an education and conservation-based tourism.

Estimation of carrying capacity and price discrimination using carrying capacity analysis and willingness to pay for sustainable tourism (case of Bukit Kehi, East Java, Indonesia)

Bukit Kehi is one of the natural tourism in East Java. One of the factors that can influence tourists' decisions to travel is the natural scenery and comfort of tourist attractions which can be obtained by maintaining the condition of the tourist environment. Given that the number of visits during the peak season is more than the low season, it can affect the condition of the natural tourism environment which is prone to damage and can reduce the comfort of tourists, therefore the purpose of this study is to estimate the carrying capacity and price discrimination on natural tourism. This research was conducted by carrying capacity analysis and Willingness to Pay (WTP). The data used are primary data derived from interviews with tourists, tourism managers and secondary data from related documents or literature. The results showed that Bukit Kehi has a carrying capacity for recreational activities of 371 people / day or 11,130 people / month or 134,515 people / year. The ticket price that should be applied during peak season is IDR 8,000. Based on these findings, Bukit Kehi tourist attraction is still under carrying capacity and can increase the number of tourist visits to the maximum limit of the carrying capacity of the tourism destination.

Assessing regional food security: A spatial analysis of food carrying capacity in Baki Subdistrict, Sukoharjo Regency – Indonesia

In Indonesia, addressing food security is challenged by a rapidly growing population, leading to increased consumption and diminished agricultural land availability due to ongoing land conversion. This study focuses on assessing the food carrying capacity in the Baki Sub-District as a critical component of regional food security. From a geographical perspective, the research employs spatial analysis to evaluate the food carrying capacity in the Baki Sub-District. Data collection involved the utilization of mathematical formulas, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the food carrying capacity. Spatial analysis was facilitated through a Geographic Information System (GIS). The findings reveal that a significant portion of the Baki Sub-District maintains a high food carrying capacity, particularly in the southern regions. However, areas proximate to Surakarta City, impacted by regional development, experience a reduction in food carrying capacity due to the conversion of agricultural land to residential use. This study contributes valuable insights into the spatial dynamics of food carrying capacity in the Baki Sub-District, providing essential information for regional food security planning.

Urban comprehensive carrying capacity analysis in Zhejiang Province of China from the perspective of production, living, and ecological spaces

ABSTRACT Urban Comprehensive Carrying Capacity (UCCC) can describe the development of a city and is an important guarantee for its sustainable development. Production-Living-Ecological Space (PLES) is an important guideline for the optimal development of China’s land space in the new era. Based on the PLES, we construct a UCCC index system and analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the UCCC of each city in Zhejiang Province from 2006 to 2020. In addition, a coupling coordination degree model and an obstacle degree model are introduced to analyze the coupling coordination degree of the development of PLES of each city and the main constraint indicators, respectively, and a GM(1,1) model is used to predict the UCCC of each city in Zhejiang Province from 2021 to 2025. The study indicates that (1) the UCCC of each city is steadily increasing, with a growth rate of over 30% in 15 years. (2) As of 2020, the highest degree of coupling coordination reaches only 0.508, and it remains a major challenge for cities to improve the coordination degree of land use. (3) Some production space and living space indicators are the main obstacle indicators hindering the development of the UCCC in Zhejiang Province. (4) The forecast results show that the UCCC in each city will still maintain an upwards trend in the following 6 years and will gradually reach a high carrying capacity level.

Spatial-temporal evolution law analysis of resource and environment carrying capacity based on game theory combination weighting and GMD-GRA-TOPSIS model. Evidence from 18 cities in Henan Province, China

In the backdrop of the high-quality growth of China's Yellow River Basin (YRB), Henan Province as a significant resource, population, economic, and grain-producing province, the contradiction between the finite availability of natural resource supply and ecological environmental capacity and the socioeconomic development has become more and more prominent, which significantly restricts the healthy sustainable development of Henan Province. Thus, it is essential to precisely assess the Resource and Environmental Carrying Capacity (RECC) for Henan Province and control the scale of cities within the regulating capacity of the ecological and resource system. Therefore, based on the evaluation system composed of natural resources, ecological environment and socioeconomic subsystems, the method of substitutability of indicator information is applied to screen the indicator system. Determine the integrated weight value of each indicator based on the Ordinal Relationship-Entropy Weight-Game Theory model. To identify the spatial-temporal progression law of RECC in 18 cities in the province of Henan from 2005 to 2020 and to forecast the development trend of RECC in each city from 2021 to 2026, the GMD-GRA-TOPSIS-Holt model was constructed. The research findings show that (1) the development of RECC in Henan Province is divided into two periods: the period of slow development (2005–2011) and the period of rapid enhancement (2012–2020). Shangqiu (SQ) and Puyang (PY) were the two cities with the largest and smallest increases in the province, with a difference of up to 51.59%. (2) There are significant regional differences in the RECC and the subsystem carrying capacity in Henan Province. Except for the resource subsystem, the carrying capacity levels of the remaining three systems are improving, and the differences among cities are gradually decreasing. (3) The vitality and strength of the future development of RECC in Henan Province will continue to increase, characterised by “accelerated advancement in the early stage and steady improvement in the later stage.” Overall, this paper provides a theoretical basis for the scientific understanding of RECC in the cities of Henan Province and a scientific basis for optimising the allocation of resources and environmental capacity. Furthermore, the evaluation model constructed in this paper expands the space of theoretical application and has a popularisation value.

The suitability and carrying capacity analysis of the mangrove ecosystem to support ecotourism in the Paljaya mangrove restoration and learning center, Bekasi Regency, Indonesia

One of the ecosystem services provided by the mangrove ecosystem is cultural service, which provides the benefits of recreation, aesthetics, and spirituality. The utilization of mangrove ecosystems, which can preserve and maintain the ecosystem, is through scientific research, education, and ecotourism. Ecotourism is a tourist activity that can Support the sustainability of using natural resources because it prioritizes natural resources over tourist facilities. This research aims to determine mangrove ecosystems’ suitability and carrying capacity for developing mangrove ecotourism. It was conducted from August until September 2022 at the Paljaya Mangrove Restoration and Learning Centre (MRLC), Segarajaya Village, Bekasi Regency. Data analysis was performed using the Tourism Suitability Index (TSI) and an assessment of the Carrying Capacity of the Region (CCR) to ensure the maximum capacity of the MRLC area in accommodating visitors at a particular time. The TSI value obtained from this study is 2.09 and is included in the Suitable category for ecotourism development. The length of the bridge for the mangrove tracking area is 230 m, with the area’s carrying capacity being 37 people/day. Therefore, recommendations that can be made in policy making are to increase mangrove planting activities and maintain mangrove sustainability.

Study of Biopharmaceutical Agricultural Development in Karanganyar Regency

Agriculture in Karanganyar Regency is not considered a primary sector in the Solo Raya area; however, it possesses untapped potential that needs to be developed. Medicinal plants, or bio-pharmaceutical commodities, are among the prominent potentials, with Karanganyar Regency ranking among the top 10 highest producers in Central Java Province and having seven sub-districts as centres for medicinal plant cultivation. Ginger, turmeric, and galangal are outstanding commodities in the Agricultural Region of Karanganyar, identified as potential and key commodities based on linkage system analysis, agropolitan subsystem analysis, spatial structure analysis, LQ and shiftshare analysis, policy analysis, and land carrying capacity analysis. The analysis reveals the presence of potential and challenges as driving and inhibiting factors. Nevertheless, the bio-pharmaceutical agriculture sector faces several issues, such as inadequate support in terms of facilities and infrastructure, as well as imbalances in inter-regional infrastructure conditions that impact marketing disparities. Additionally, monitoring and reporting of agricultural sector development programs are not yet optimal. Therefore, further analysis and studies are needed to develop the agricultural sector, particularly in the bio-pharmaceutical commodities domain.

Marine and coastal tourism has rapidly emerged as promising sectors with the potential to drive sustainable regional development. Achieving the status of a sustainable tourist destination requires adherence to specific criteria, particularly concerning the ecological carrying capacity of tourism activities. This study aims to evaluate the suitability and carrying capacity of beach tourism in Topejawa Village, Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, focusing on recreation and swimming activities. Data were collected from eight strategically located observation stations along the beach area from March to August 2022. Using the Tourism Suitability Index (TSI), we assessed ten parameters to evaluate the beach’s physical condition. Additionally, we conducted an analysis of the Ecological Carrying Capacity (ECC) to determine the maximum number of visitors that the tourist area can sustainably accommodate for recreation and swimming activities. Our findings indicate that Topejawa beach area’s stations I, III, and IV were classified as ‘suitable’ with TSI values ranging from 1.8 to 2.1 across all stations. The ecological carrying capacity analysis revealed that the beach can accommodate up to 1,257 individuals per day for recreation and 15,171 for swimming activities. We recommend the period from March to November for beach tourism due to favorable weather conditions. These results demonstrate the significant potential of Topejawa Village for sustainable ecotourism development, emphasizing the importance of ecological carrying capacity assessments and sustainable tourism practices. As coastal tourism continues to thrive, this study provides valuable insights for the responsible management and growth of Topejawa’s beach recreation tourism industry.

Environmental carrying capacity and ecological risk assessment of pesticides under different soil use types in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA), China

Soil environmental safety has received much attention during the past few decades due to its significance in agricultural production and human health. Special attention is required for soil pesticide residues and ecological risks. This study examined 197 soil samples from industrial, residential and agricultural areas for the presence of 12 organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) and 8 synthetic pyrethroids (SYPs) in the 16 cities in Henan Province, and the center of CPUA, based on the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA) concept proposed by China. The total average concentrations of ∑12OPPs in industrial, residential and agricultural soils were 194, 217, 267 ng/g dry weight, and those of ∑8SYPs were 26.8, 35.7, 25.5 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The two pollutants with the greatest concentrations in the soils were malathion and fenpropathrin, respectively, the dominant components of OPPs and SYPs. The soil environmental carrying capacity (SECC) analysis, representing the maximum residual load that can be supported, shows that acephate and cyhalothrin were overloaded, with a predicted period of over 500 years. Among the 16 cities of CPUA, a higher frequency of high ecological risk could be observed only in Shangqiu. The OPPs in children had total non-carcinogenic risk values of more than 1.0. Similarly, the non-carcinogenic risks of SYPs in adults and children in the residential areas were more than 1.0. The study provides knowledge on how to effectively manage soil safety in Henan Province, which is the center of the CPUA, with a large population and grain province to protect ecosystems and reduce the risks of soil pesticide residues in humans.

Analysis of Tourism Carrying Capacity as a Basis for Development of the Tanjung Tampa Nature Tourism Park, Central Lombok Regency

The development of the Tanjung Tampa TWA into a natural tourism destination that can support one of the priority national tourism destinations in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (KEK) must pay attention to the carrying capacity of the Tanjung Tampa TWA so that it does not cause negative impacts that can damage the biophysics of the area. This research aims to analyze the tourism carrying capacity of Tanjung Tampa TWA using the Cifuentes method. The research results show that the physical carrying capacity is 4720 tourists per day, the real carrying capacity is 161 tourists per day and the effective carrying capacity is 121 tourists per day. The development of the Tanjung Tampa TWA by taking into account the results of the tourism carrying capacity analysis can be done by increasing the quantity of human resources. Improvements can be made by empowering communities around the Tanjung Tampa TWA area, improving the quality of community human resources by establishing and assisting natural tourism interpreters.
