Assessment of Preoperative Anxiety Utilizing Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale in Patients Undergoing Intracranial Tumor Surgery: An Exploratory Study

Abstract Background Preoperative anxiety in neurosurgical patients is high due to life-threatening illness and uncertainty of the surgical outcome. This study assessed preoperative anxiety and its influencing factors in patients undergoing intracranial tumor surgeries utilizing the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). Methods One-hundred twenty patients, 18 to 65 years of age, of either sex, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grades I/II posted for elective craniotomy and tumor excision, were selected for the study. Various components of the APAIS were explained, and the level of anxiety and need for information were noted. The level of anxiety and depression by HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) score was also evaluated. Results The mean age was 38.00 ± 12.15 years. About 57.5% of the patients were male. Eighteen (15%) patients had an educational qualification of class 10, 60(50%) of 10 + 2, 36 (30%) were graduates, and 6 (5%) had a postgraduate qualification.The mean APAIS for total anxiety was 11.10 ± 1.79; the score for need for information was 6.28 ± 1.61. Mean total anxiety scores were higher in female patients (11.96 vs. 10.46, p < 0.001). Higher anxiety was observed in ASA status I patients (11.33 vs. 10.539 ASA I vs. II, p = 0.020). Significantly higher anxiety was observed in patients educated till class 10 (p = 0.012). A significantly higher need for information was observed in postgraduates (p = 0.012). Eighty (66.7%) patients had clinical anxiety, and 35 (29.2%) had clinical depression on the HADS score. Conclusion Neurosurgical patients have higher anxiety due to intracranial pathology, site of surgery, and unpredictability of outcome. Demographic and clinical variables do affect anxiety levels.

Frequency Of Anxiety in Pre-Operative Surgical Patients in the Tertiary Care Hospitals, Karachi

Background: Preoperative anxiety significantly impacts patient outcomes and healthcare delivery, with varying degrees of prevalence reported globally. Understanding and managing this anxiety are crucial for improving surgical experiences and patient recovery. This study focuses on tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, aiming to elucidate the frequency and determinants of preoperative anxiety among elective surgery patients. Objective: To ascertain the prevalence of preoperative anxiety among patients awaiting elective surgeries in various surgical units of tertiary care hospitals in Karachi and to identify significant contributing factors. Methods: In a prospective cross-sectional design, 400 patients scheduled for elective surgeries across six surgical units were assessed using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). SPSS version 24 facilitated the analysis, focusing on global anxiety prevalence and its associations with demographic and clinical variables. Results: The study revealed a 62.0% prevalence of preoperative global anxiety. The APAIS scores indicated higher anxiety related to the surgery (mean = 7.27 ± 2.31) compared to anesthesia (mean = 5.14 ± 2.35). Significant associations were found between anxiety levels and age groups (p=0.002), surgical procedures (p<0.001), and type of anesthesia (p<0.001). ENT and urology patients exhibited notably higher anxiety, at 75.0% and 68.0% respectively. Multivariate analysis demonstrated a significant impact of gender on preoperative anxiety, with females showing increased vulnerability [aOR 1.91 (95% CI 1.13-3.21); p=0.015]. Conclusion: Preoperative anxiety remains a prevalent concern, with female patients exhibiting higher levels of anxiety than their male counterparts. The findings advocate for targeted counseling and informational support for patients, especially females, prior to surgery and anesthesia consultations, underscoring the need for healthcare professionals to address and mitigate preoperative anxiety effectively.

Comparison of Pain and Anxiety Scales in The First and Second Cataract Surgeries in Patient with Bilateral Cataract

Abstract : Introduction & ObjectivesPain and anxiety in cataract surgery can be investigated as subjective experiences and satisfaction. This study was to evaluate and compare pain and anxiety scale reported by patients with bilateral cataract in the first and second surgery.
 Methods : This prospective study was based on patients in Jakarta Eye Centre Orbita Makassar between August-October 2022. Consecutive patients undergoing bilateral cataract surgery with the first and second surgery separated by minimum of two weeks with phacoemulsification method and used topical anaesthesia, by three surgeons. Patients with traumatic cataract, secondary cataract, and other ocular abnormality, also patients with intraoperative complications were excluded. Patients completed questionnaires of Numerical Rating Scale to evaluate pain and Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) to evaluate anxiety divided into no, mild, moderate, severe, and very severe anxiety.
 Results : A total of 42 patients with an average of 64,5 years old were included. There were 2 (4.7%) patients reported more pain in the first surgery, 30 (71%) patients reported more pain in the second surgery, and 10 (23%) patients reported same pain between the first and second surgeries (p=0,000). Most patients reported mild anxiety in the first surgery and no anxiety in second surgery.
 Conclusion : Patients with bilateral cataracts reported more pain on the second surgery than the first surgery. The anxiety was reported more severe before and during the first surgery than the second surgery. This report can be used in giving informed concern and in the management of bilateral cataract surgeries consecutively.

The Influence of Smart Visual Education Based on Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Theory on Anxiety Levels

Anxiety is a feeling of discomfort, worry, fear, and tension. This response is a physiological response to external or internal stimuli that can cause behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms. Anxiety in patients starts from the moment the patient receives a surgery schedule. If the patient continues to feel anxious while the operation is in progress, this can disrupt the operation process because a tense patient can increase the heart rate which can affect the patient's blood pressure and breathing. This study aims to determine the effect of educational videos on anxiety in surgical patients. The research uses a quantitative research design with a quasi-experimental research design (pretest-posttest with control group design). There were 66 street children as respondents consisting of 33 control group respondents and 33 treatment group respondents. Respondents were determined using affordable population techniques. The independent variable is smart visual education based on Dorothea Orem's self-care theory and the dependent variable is anxiety level. Data was collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the independent t-test with a significance level of p<0.05. The instrument used was the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) Questionnaire. There is a significant relationship between respondents' anxiety levels in the pretest and posttest results (p=0.000) in both the control group and the treatment group. However, there was no significant difference in the delta of respondents' anxiety levels in both the control and treatment groups. Smart visual education based on Dorothea Orem's self-care theory influences reducing the anxiety level of patients who will undergo surgery with SAB regional anesthesia.

The Impact of Educational Materials on Parental Anxiety and Productivity: A Clinical Trial in Pediatric Appendicitis

ObjectivesThere is limited literature on how acute appendicitis, the most common acute children's surgical illness, affects the family. We conducted a prospective study to assess the impact of educational materials on parents' anxiety and productivity during the child's illness. MethodsA quasi-experimental clinical trial was conducted among parents of children undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy. In Phase I, parents received the standard explanations at diagnosis and throughout the postoperative period. In Phase II, parents also received a comprehensive educational brochure on pediatric appendicitis at diagnosis. The primary outcome, parental preoperative anxiety, was assessed using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). The secondary outcome, parental productivity, was evaluated through a post-recovery online questionnaire based on the Productivity and Disease Questionnaire (PRODISQ). Baseline characteristics and outcomes were compared between the two cohorts using t-tests, Mann–Whitney, chi-square, or Fischer's exact test as appropriate. ResultsPhases I and II included 67 and 66 families, respectively. Patient demographics and disease severity were similar between both groups. Of the 53 parents (80.3%) in Phase II who answered the postoperative questionnaire, most recommended the booklet (96.2%), as it decreased their stress (78.0%) and enhanced their understanding of appendicitis (94.1%). However, the two groups showed similar preoperative anxiety levels and postoperative productivity loss. ConclusionsEducational materials increased satisfaction with surgical care but did not mitigate the high parental preoperative anxiety levels and postoperative productivity loss. Purpose: Knowing the effect of audiovisual education on the anxiety level of preoperative ectio caesarea patients with spinal anesthesia at RSUD dr. H. Soemarno Sosroatmodjo Tanjung Selor. Method: This research design uses a pre-experimental design with a Pre and post-test without control approach. Accidental sampling technique. The number of samples obtained was 40 respondents. Measurement of anxiety using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) with audio visual education intervention. Findings: The age of the patients was mostly in the category of 20-35 years, 35 patients (87.5%) and the majority of parity with primiparous 24 patients (60%), Anxiety of preoperative cesarean section patients before giving audio visual education about cesarean section surgery with spinal anesthesia the majority with moderate anxiety 25 patients (62.5%), Anxiety of preoperative cesarean section patients after giving audio visual education about cesarean section surgery with spinal anesthesia the majority with not anxious or normal a total of 21 (52.5%). Conclusion: There is an effect of audio-visual education on the anxiety level of preoperative sectio caesarea patients with spinal anesthesia at RSUD dr. H. Soemarno Sosroatmodjo Tanjung.

Measures of preoperative anxiety: Part two.

The current literature indicates that routine evaluation of preoperative anxiety, its determinants, and patient-specific concerns is universally advocated. This aligns with the increasingly acknowledged importance of prehabilitation - a comprehensive process preparing patients for surgery. A crucial component of prehabilitation is assessing patients' mental health. Recommendations for psychological evaluations in prehabilitation encompass, inter alia, determining the severity of anxiety. This work builds on a 2019 article, which presented scales for preoperative anxiety assessment: the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS), and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). This article extends the possibilities of preoperative anxiety assessment by introducing four additional methods: the Surgical Fear Questionnaire (SFQ), the Anxiety Specific to Surgery Questionnaire (ASSQ), the Surgical Anxiety Questionnaire (SAQ), and Anesthesia- and Surgery-dependent Preoperative Anxiety (ASPA). The authors provide comprehensive details on these instruments, including scoring, interpretation, availability, and usefulness both in scientific research and clinical practice. The authors also provide the data on the availability of Polish versions of the presented methods and preliminary data on the reliability of SFQ in patients awaiting cardiac surgery. This review seems relevant for professionals in multiple disciplines, including anesthesiology, surgery, clinical psychology, nursing, primary care and notably prehabilitation. It emphasizes the necessity of individualizing anxiety assessment and acknowledging patient subjectivity, which the presented methods facilitate through a thorough evaluation of specific patient concerns. The literature review also identifies concerns and future research avenues in this area. The importance of qualitative studies and those evaluating prehabilitation intervention is emphasized.

Prevalence of pre-operative anxiety and associated risk factors among patients awaiting elective surgery in a tertiary care hospital.

Patients undergoing surgery have a fear of anesthesia and surgical procedures that results in anxiety. The global incidence of pre-operative anxiety is estimated at 60-92%. Age, gender, education, marital status, type of family, type of anesthesia and surgery, and history of surgery are the contributing factors. High levels of anxiety during the pre-operative period has negative impacts on surgical outcomes. The main objective of this study was to find out the prevalence of pre-operative anxiety and associated risk factors in a hospital setting of a developing country. This was a single center, analytical, cross-sectional study conducted among the admitted patients scheduled for elective surgeries in a tertiary care hospital. Non-probability convenience sampling was adopted and a total of 205 cases were included. The researchers themselves collected the data on the day before surgery using questionnaires comprised of two parts: semi-structured questionnaires prepared via literature review and Amsterdam Pre-operative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). Data were analyzed in SPSS version 23. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed appropriately. The prevalence of pre-operative anxiety was 25.85%. The median anaesthesia related, surgery related, and total anxiety scores were 4.00, 5.00 and 9.00 respectively. Likewise, the median score of information desired component scale was 5.00. Different anxiety scores were positively correlated with the information desire component score. The patients living in a nuclear family (adjusted OR, 2.480; 95% CI, 1.272-4.837, p = 0.008) and those without past history of surgery (adjusted OR, 2.451; 95% CI, 1.107-5.424, p = 0.027) had approximately 2.5 times higher risk of having pre-operative anxiety compared to those from a joint family and those having past history of surgery respectively. Those receiving spinal anesthesia had approximately two times lower risk of anxiety (adjusted OR, 0.511; 95% CI, 0.265-0.985, p = 0.045). One fourth of the patients had pre-operative anxiety. Type of family, type of anesthesia and past history of surgery were found to be the independent predictors of anxiety.

Age, gender, and systemic condition effects on anxiety in oral surgery patients: An analysis of different assessment tools

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to determine the effect of the oral surgery and dental anesthesia on anxiety in patients, by comparing two anxiety scales. The study designed to evaluate the effect of physical status, age and gender on anxiety and to compare anxiety and need for information. MethodsA total of 91 patients, categorized as ASA-I and ASA-II based on ASA (American Society of Anesthesiology) scoring, were assessed utilizing the BAI (Beck Anxiety Inventory) and APAIS (Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale) tests. The groups were compared by using the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (p < .05). ResultsBAI, APAIS-A and APAIS-B values were significantly higher in ASA-II individuals compared to ASA-I. APAIS and BAI values were correlated with each other in the ASA-I group, while APAIS-B was not correlated with other values in the ASA-II group. Anxiety scores were higher in female patients. Age was inversely correlated with anxiety, while the need for information did not change. ConclusionThe APAIS may provide more detailed information to evaluate anxiety in the group with mild systemic disease. The need for information is higher in patients with chronic disease, regardless of their anxiety status.

The relationship between uncertainty and acute procedure anxiety among surgical patients in Chinese mainland: the mediating role of resilience

BackgroundSurgery, as one of the main diagnostic and treatment methods, is a routine work in medical settings. Patients undergoing surgery often experience acute procedure anxiety due to uncertainty. There is ample evidence showing that uncertainty is a risk factor for the acute procedure anxiety in surgical patients. However, little is known about the psychological processes mediating this relationship. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate resilience as a mediator of the association between uncertainty and anxiety.MethodsA population-based cross-sectional survey with a convenience sampling method was conducted, involving 243 surgical patients in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province of China was carried out. Relevant data were collected by self-reporting questionnaires, including demographic characteristics questionnaire, Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS-C), Mishel’s Illness Uncertainty Scale (MUIS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Pearson correlation analysis was employed to examine correlations between various variables. A path model was used to assess the mediation effect of resilience with respect to uncertainty and acute procedure anxiety.ResultsIn the path model, uncertainty have an indirect effect on acute procedure anxiety through resilience. The results suggest that resilience has a mediating role in uncertainty and acute procedure anxiety among surgical patients.ConclusionsThese findings call for the development of interventions targeting the role of resilience in effectively predicting and preventing acute procedure anxiety and uncertainty among surgical patients.

Effect of pre-operative patient anxiety on post-spinal shivering during elective cesarean delivery: a prospective observational study

BackgroundShivering after spinal anesthesia is common during cesarean delivery (CD), and is thought to be primarily a thermoregulatory response. By inducing autonomic changes, pre-operative anxiety could alter the functioning of the thermoregulatory center, hence modifying the incidence and severity of obstetric post-spinal shivering. This prospective observational study was conducted to explore the relationship between pre-operative anxiety and obstetric post-spinal shivering. MethodsPatients ≥18 years of age and scheduled for elective CD under spinal anesthesia were enrolled. Pre-operative anxiety was measured on the day of surgery using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS), and was correlated with the incidence of post-spinal shivering. Other possible risk factors for post-spinal shivering were explored using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. ResultsAmong the 150 participants, 46 (31%) experienced post-spinal shivering. The relative risk of intra-operative shivering in those with high APAIS pre-operative anxiety was 2.76 (95% CI 1.55 to 4.90; P = 0.0005). Younger patient age (aOR 0.91, 95% CI 0.83 to 0.98; P = 0.02), higher APAIS anxiety score (aOR 1.21, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.37; P = 0.005), higher VAS anxiety score (aOR 1.48, 95% CI 1.24 to 1.78; P < 0.001) were independent risk factors for post-spinal shivering. ConclusionsHigh pre-operative anxiety and younger patient age were independent risk factors for post-spinal shivering during elective CD. Targeted interventions to reduce pre-operative patient anxiety might have a positive impact in decreasing the incidence of intra-operative post-spinal shivering in this patient population.

Analysis of patients' privacy and associated factors in the perioperative period.

Healthcare professionals recognize how to protect patient privacy in order to effectively reduce the occurrence of conflict between the two parties. Therefore, understanding the protection of patient privacy during the perioperative period and the relevant factors affecting privacy is essential to improving healthcare delivery. This was a cross-sectional survey of a convenience sample of 400 perioperative patients. General demographic information, the perioperative privacy scale (PPS), and the Amsterdam preoperative anxiety and information scale (APAIS) were used for the survey. And factors affecting patient privacy were investigated by ANOVA or t-test analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and linear regression models. This study found that perioperative patient privacy satisfaction scores were (53.51 ± 12.54). The results of the univariate analysis showed that factors affecting privacy satisfaction included gender, age, and the number of surgeries (p < 0.05). Preoperative anxiety and Information Needs Scale was negatively associated with the perioperative patient privacy satisfaction (r = -0.807, p < 0.01). Further analysis was performed using linear regression models to finally obtain five factors affecting perioperative patient privacy: gender, age, anesthesia modality, the number of surgeries, and the Amsterdam preoperative anxiety and information. Healthcare professionals working in healthcare facilities need to be aware of the sensitivity of different populations to privacy when protecting patient privacy. Patients' preoperative anxiety and information need status affect privacy satisfaction. This will mean that healthcare professionals will be able to identify key privacy concerns early and take appropriate action.

Preoperative anxiety and associated factors among women admitted for elective obstetric and gynecologic surgery in public hospitals, Southern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundPreoperative anxiety is a major mental health problem during the preoperative period. Admission of women to surgery is stressful, and a high level of anxiety was associated with increased perioperative morbidity and mortality, poor treatment satisfaction, and bad obstetric outcomes, including long-term cognitive impairment in children. Despite its negative consequences, little is known on this area, particularly in the study area.ObjectiveTo assess preoperative anxiety and associated factors among women admitted for elective obstetrics and gynecologic surgeries in public hospitals in Southern Ethiopia, 2022.Methods and MaterialsAn institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 389 women using structured interviewer-administered samples who were selected by systematic random sampling from May 20th to June 20th, 2022. The Amsterdam preoperative anxiety and information scale (APAIS) was used to assess the level of anxiety. Data were collected electronically using the Open Data Kit version 2022.2.3 and analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 26.0. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done. The strength of the association was declared by using an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval, and a statistical significance of P < 0.05.ResultsThe magnitude of preoperative anxiety was 57.1% (95% CI = 51.4–61.5), and 48.1% of women required an average amount of information. Being a gynecologic patient (AOR = 2.0, 95% CI = 1.21, 3.32), having previous anesthesia and surgery (AOR = 2.09, 95% CI = 1.10, 3.96), having fear of postoperative pain (AOR = 1.96, 95% CI = 1.08, 3.53), having concern for family (AOR = 2.56, 95% CI = 1.49, 4.37), having poor social support (AOR = 3.75, 95% CI = 1.99, 7.09), and moderate social supports (AOR = 3.27, 95% CI = 1.74, 6.17), and having a high information requirement about anesthesia and surgery (AOR = 4.68, 95%CI = 2.16, 10.13) were statistically associated with preoperative anxiety.ConclusionPreoperative anxiety was often high in the region. Associated factors were the type of surgery, previous anesthesia and surgery, fear of postoperative pain, fear for family, social support, and a high information need. So the national and regional health bureau should develop guidelines and implement strategies to reduce women preoperative anxiety as part of midwifery care. The women should be assessed regularly during the preoperative visits; and appropriate anxiety reduction and information regarding surgery, and anesthesia should be provided.

Background:Most patients before sectio caesarea surgery using spinal anesthesia have different waiting times, which affects preoperative anxiety. Overreaction due to this anxiety is feared to affect the success of the surgery. The long waiting time of preoperative sectio caesarea patients (?30 minutes) has moderate anxiety. While inappropriate pre anesthesia waiting time (&gt;30 minutes) has severe anxiety. Therefore, the longer the waiting time experienced by patients can affect the level ofanxiety in patients. Purpose:This study aims to determine the relationship between waiting time and anxiety of preoperative sectio caesarea with spinal anesthesia Methods:This study used quantitative correlation analytics with a cross sectional approach.Data collection was carried out before the respondent entered the operating room by giving the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) questionnaire. The sample in this study was 66 respondents who were taken using purposive sampling technique. Data analysis used isu nivariate and bivariate analysisusing the spearman rank test. Result:The results of the correlation statistical test using Spearman rank showed that the coefficient method was 0.5 and p value 0.000. From this study it is known that out of 51 people in the category of waiting time ?30 minutes, there are 26 people (39.4%) with moderate anxiety, in the &gt;30 minute category, there are 8 people (12.1%) with severe anxiety. Prevalence of preoperative anxiety among hospitalized patients in a developing country: a study of associated factors

BackgroundPreoperative anxiety is a health concern among patients scheduled for surgical interventions. Little is known about the prevalence of preoperative anxiety among patients in different healthcare systems of developing countries. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of preoperative anxiety among patients undergoing surgery in Palestine. Another objective was to identify the factors associated with preoperative anxiety.MethodsThis study was conducted in a cross-sectional descriptive design. Patients scheduled for surgical interventions were interviewed using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire collected the demographic, clinical, and surgical variables of the patients. The questionnaire also contained the Amsterdam preoperative anxiety and information scale (APAIS), and a short version of the Spielberger state-trait anxiety inventory (STAIS-5/STAIT-5).ResultA total of 280 patients were included. The mean APAIS total score was 13.6 ± 5.9, the mean APAIS anxiety domain score was 8.3 ± 4.3, and the mean APAIS need for information domain was 1.6 ± 0.50. Of the patients, 76 (27.1%) had high anxiety and 160 (57.1%) expressed a high need for information. The higher APAIS anxiety scores were predicted by being female, having chronic diseases, being scheduled to be operated on within 24 h, and having experienced surgical complications. The mean STAIS-5 score was 10.0 ± 4.2 and the mean STAIT-5 was 10.3 ± 3.8. Of the patients, 140 (50.0%) had high state anxiety and 56 (20.0%) had high trait anxiety. Higher STAIS-5 scores were predicted by being female, younger than 42 years, and scheduled to be operated on within 24 h. Higher STAIT-5 scores were predicted by being female. A positive correlation was identified between APAIS total, APAIS anxiety, APAIS need for information, STAIS-5, and STAIT-5 scores.ConclusionPreoperative anxiety was prevalent among patients scheduled for surgical operations in Palestinian hospitals. Anesthesiologists and other providers of perioperative care should screen preoperative patients who are female, have chronic diseases, are scheduled to be operated on within 24 h, and having had experienced surgical complications for preoperative anxiety. More studies are still needed to investigate the effects of the implemented measures on the prevalence of preoperative anxiety.

TO OBSERVE AND ASSESS RELATION BETWEEN PRE-OPERATIVE ANXIETY AND POST-OPERATIVE PAIN IN LAPAROSCOPIC BARIATRIC SURGERY PATIENTS

Background: Pre-operative anxiety in obese patients is expected to be more due to psychological reasons, body habitus, comorbidities, and fear of not waking up from anesthesia. It is associated with emotional and physical problems. Predictive factors are complexity of surgery, the anesthesia, post-operative pain, not being appropriately informed, and psychosocial characteristics of the patient. Not many such studies have been conducted in morbidly obese patients. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between pre-operative anxiety and post-operative pain in obese patients undergoing elective laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Methods: Total 200 patients of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Grade I–III were taken, with BMI &gt;30 kg/m2, who were undergoing elective laparoscopic bariatric surgeries. The amsterdam preoperative anxiety and information scale (APAIS) score was recorded a day prior to surgery. Heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and SpO2 were recorded pre- and postoperatively. Patients were assessed for pain on the visual analog scale (VAS) in post-operative period at 0-, 1-, 2-, 6-, 12-, and 24-h intervals. All the data were entered in master chart and statistically analyzed (Pearson coefficient of correlation test). Results: There is a positive, weak, statistically significant correlation (r=0.157, p=0.026) between anxiety score (APAIS) and post-operative pain (the highest VAS across all hours). Conclusion: Pre-operative anxiety is directly linked to post-operative pain in obese patients undergoing elective laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

PENERAPAN TERAPI MUROTTAL AL-QUR’AN DAN RELAKSASI NAFAS DALAM TERHADAP PENURUNAN TINGKAT KECEMASAN KLIEN PRE OPERASI FRAKTUR FEMUR DENGAN TINDAKAN ORIF DI RUMAH SAKIT ISLAM PURWOKERTO

Anxiety occurs in many clients before surgery. The application of murattal Al-Qur'an therapy and deep breathing relaxation is a type of non-pharmacological therapy. The purpose of this case study was to determine the application of murattal therapy and deep breathing relaxation to reduce preoperative anxiety levels of femur fractures in the intraoperative room of Purwokerto Islamic Hospital. The sample in this case is the pretest-posttest using The Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) instrument. It was concluded that murattal therapy and deep breathing relaxation can reduce anxiety levels in preoperative patients. Based on the results of the case study it is recommended to use this type of treatment in an effort to reduce the anxiety of oraoperative patients.

Preoperative Anxiety in Patients with Pancreatic Cancer: What Contributes to Anxiety Levels in Patients Waiting for Surgical Intervention.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies. Currently, the only treatment is surgical resection, which contributes to significant preoperative anxiety, reducing quality of life and worsening surgical outcomes. To date, no standard preventive or therapeutic methods have been established for preoperative anxiety in pancreatic patients. This observational study aims to identify which patients' socio-demographic, clinical and psychological characteristics contribute more to preoperative anxiety and to identify which are their preoperative concerns. Preoperative anxiety was assessed the day before surgery in 104 selected cancer patients undergoing similar pancreatic major surgery, by administering the STAI-S (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form) and the APAIS (Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale). Our data suggest that patients with high STAI-S showed higher levels of APAIS and that major concerns were related to surgical aspects. Among psychological characteristics, depressive symptoms and trait anxiety appeared as risk factors for the development of preoperative anxiety. Findings support the utility of planning a specific psychological screening to identify patients who need more help, with the aim of offering support and preventing the development of state anxiety and surgery worries in the preoperative phase. This highlights also the importance of good communication by the surgeon on specific aspects related to the operation.
