A Comprehensive Analysis of PAPR Reduction in Scrambled UFMC and OFDM Using Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm for 5G Communications

ABSTRACT With the advent of 5G communications, the demand for high data rates and improved spectral efficiency has necessitated the exploration of advanced modulation techniques. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier (UFMC) are two prominent modulation schemes for 5G systems. However, both OFDM and UFMC suffer from a high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR), leading to signal distortion and inefficient power amplification. The Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS) approach is a promising strategy to minimize PAPR in OFDM and is applied to UFMC to minimize PAPR in UFMC and is known as scrambled UFMC (S-UFMC). PTS, however, involves an extensive search to identify the best phase factors that increase computational complexity. The artificial bee colony algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity S-UFMC and OFDM. A novel modulation scheme, amplitude phase shift keying (APSK), is used instead of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) in S-UFMC and OFDM, which has better performance than conventional modulation schemes. In this research, OFDM, PTS OFDM, UFMC and S-UFMC are compared and it is found that the proposed scrambled UFMC with APSK modulation using ABC algorithm performs better than OFDM and UFMC in terms of PAPR, spectral efficiency and computational complexity.

Circularly Symmetric Companding Quantization-Inspired Hybrid Constellation Shaping for APSK Modulation to Increase Power Efficiency in Gaussian-Noise-Limited Channel

In this paper we address hybrid probabilistic-geometric constellation shaping (HCS) of amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) constellation based on the reversed model of optimal companding quantization for circularly symmetric sources with the goal to increase the constellation power efficiency in Gaussian-noise-limited channel. To empirically optimize the proposed APSK constellation such that a symbol-error rate (SER) reaches its minimum under given constraints with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the prior probabilities of constellation points, for various settings of constellation parameters, we investigate SER dependence on SNR and determine the constellation parameters achieving minimum SER. The SER dependence on SNR we estimate theoretically by deriving approximate formula for SER of uncoded APSK constellation in Gaussian-noise-limited channel and practically by performing simulation. The obtained results are well-matched verifying the accuracy of approximate SER formula. The results also show that our APSK constellation outperforms some previous APSK and M-ary QAM constellations in terms of power efficiency. Thus, for SER equal to 10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-6</sup> the gain in power efficiency amounts up to 2.35 dB, 2.23dB and 1.64 dB compared with the maximum mutual information-optimized 4+12-APSK, 4+12+16-APSK and 4+12+20+28-APSK constellations, respectively. This means that by employing APSK constellation we propose instead the traditional APSK constellations the transmitted signal power can be reduced by a third enabling lower power consumption. The improved power efficiency of our APSK constellation makes it suitable for application in power-limited communications such as fiber-optic communications, satellite communications, power-line communications, and multiple-input multiple-output wireless transmissions.

Marine Meteorological Data Transmission Evaluation Methods Based on Load Factor Measurement

In the past few decades, digital communication technology has developed rapidly and achieved quite successful results. The advanced digital communication technology to transmit marine meteorological data are used. However, the impact of digital modulation methods on marine weather data transmission load rates is unclear. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the digital modulation method under the optimal environment of data transmission load rate. It studies and records 16 modulation methods, including 3 quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 12 amplitude phase shift keying (APSK). It is found that the load efficiency obtained by the APSK modulation method can reach 51.00 Mbps in matlab, which is much higher than the load efficiency obtained from the navigation telex system based on the frequency shift keying (FSK) modulation method. The results show that the marine meteorological data transmission method using the APSK modulation method has the best load efficiency.

Performance evaluation of hybrid modulation techniques for high speed radio over fiber communication system

In Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology, the optical network capacity is integrated with the wireless network. The main objective of this work is to enhance the performance behavior of optical fiber communication system in terms of BER, Received Power and Q-Factor. The proposed combined modulation technologies, such as Pulse Amplitude Frequency Modulation (PAFM), Differential Phase Shift Keying Amplitude Modulation (DPSKA), Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Amplitude Modulation (OQPSKA), Quadrature Amplitude Frequency Modulation (QAFM), Frequency Phase Modulation (FPM) and Pulse Amplitude Phase Modulation (PAPM), are used to meet this objective. The input data are used for modulating the electrical carrier signal with a frequency of 250 and 255[Formula: see text]GHz. This hybrid modulation technique obtained the minimum BER of about [Formula: see text] in FPM technique. The maximum Q-Factor of 33 is obtained in QAFM technique. The obtained maximum received power is 0.79[Formula: see text]mW in OQPSKA technique.

Transmission Performance Simulation Study Evaluation for High Speed Radio Over Fiber Communication Systems

Radio over fiber communication system technology modulation techniques are presented in this study in order to enhance the performance behavior of optical fiber communication systems. The proposed modulation techniques used to meet this aim mainly consist from a mixture of traditional modulation technologies. The proposed modulation technologies include merging modulation techniques such as pulse amplitude frequency modulation, quadrature amplitude frequency modulation, differential phase shift keying amplitude modulation, offset quadrature phase shift keying amplitude modulation and frequency phase modulation are applied on different optical communication system models. The different types of modulation techniques are illustrated and discriminated in current research paper that provides measured quantities details that namely received power, maximum Q-factor and minimum bit error rate regarding to simulation results. Optiwave Simulation Version 13 software is the basic tool which is used to study proposed models.

Performance analysis of APSK modulation for DVB‐S2 transmission over nonlinear channels

AbstractFor increased bandwidth efficiency and receiver performance, standards for satellite broadcasting systems are evolving by utilizing efficient transmission techniques. The second‐generation digital video broadcasting for satellites (DVB‐S2) adopts the amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) modulation for enhanced performance over nonlinear channels. In this paper, we derive error rate bounds for APSK modulated symbols and generalize the bounds to the case of distorted constellation, which occurs when the maximum transmission amplitude is saturated by the soft‐limiter type channel. The derived bound is shown to significantly improve the previously known result, to accurately predict both the symbol error rate and bit error rate in the entire signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) region of interest. Using the derived formula, the optimal input power level for the soft‐limiter channel is determined, and the corresponding minimal error rates for 16‐ and 32‐APSK are quantified. The result is also interpreted in terms of optimal input back‐off (IBO) for nonlinear power amplifiers by evaluating the performance degradation as a function of IBO. Performance analysis of turbo-coded APSK modulations over nonlinear satellite channels

This paper investigates the performance of M-ary amplitude-phase shift keying (APSK) digital modulation over typical nonlinear satellite channels. The effect of the satellite nonlinearity is studied, and distortion pre- and post-compensation techniques for coded APSK are presented. Moreover, clock timing, signal amplitude and carrier phase recovery schemes are discussed. For the latter, a new class of non turbo decoder-aided closed-loop phase synchronizers featuring good performance and low complexity is studied. Finally, an end-to-end coded APSK system simulator inclusive of the satellite channel model and synchronization sub-systems is discussed and its performance compared to standard trellis-coded QAM concatenated with Reed-Solomon codes, showing a remarkable gain in both power and spectral efficiency. Coded APSK, recently selected for the new standard -DVB-S2- for digital video broadcasting and interactive broadband satellite services, is shown to represent a powerand spectral-efficient solution for satellite nonlinear channels.

Serial dark soliton for 100-gb/s applications

We analyze the performance through numerical simulations of a new modulation format: serial dark soliton (SDS) for wide-area 100-Gb/s applications. We compare the performance of the SDS with conventional dark soliton, amplitude-modulation phase-shift keying (also known as duobinary), nonreturn-to-zero, and return-to-zero modulation formats, when subjected to typical wide-area-network impairments. We show that the SDS has a strong chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode-dispersion tolerance, while maintaining a compact spectrum suitable for strong filtering requirement in ultradense wavelength-division-multiplexing applications. The SDS can be generated using commercially available components for 40-Gb/s applications and is cost efficient when compared with other 100-Gb/s electrical-time-division-multiplexing systems.

Turbo-coded APSK modulations design for satellite broadband communications

This paper investigates the design of power and spectrally efficient coded modulations based on amplitude phase shift keying (APSK) modulation with application to satellite broadband communications. APSK represents an attractive modulation format for digital transmission over nonlinear satellite channels due to its power and spectral efficiency combined with its inherent robustness against nonlinear distortion. For these reasons APSK has been very recently introduced in the new standard for satellite Digital Video Broadcasting named DVB-S2. Assuming an ideal rectangular transmission pulse, for which no nonlinear inter-symbol interference is present and perfect pre-compensation of the nonlinearity, we optimize the APSK constellation. In addition to the minimum distance criterion, we introduce a new optimization based on the mutual information; this new method generates an optimum constellation for each spectral efficiency. To achieve power efficiency jointly with low bit error rate (BER) floor we adopt a powerful binary serially concatenated turbo-code coupled with optimal APSK modulations through bit-interleaved coded modulation. We derive tight approximations on the maximum-likelihood decoding error probability, and results are compared with computer simulations. The proposed coded modulation scheme is shown to provide a considerable performance advantage compared to current standards for satellite multimedia and broadcasting systems. Space–Time Codes With AM-PSK Constellations

This correspondence presents a new signal mapper that maps the maximal rank distance codes to space-time (ST) codes with amplitude modulation phase-shift keying (AM-PSK) constellations. It is shown that this new mapper is rank-distance preserving. Comparing to the multiradii construction proposed by Hammons, this new mapper has linear increase in the radii and the resulting signal constellations have larger minimum distance and lower peak-to-average power ratio. Variations of this new mapper are also given to provide ST codes with rotated AM-PSK constellations
