“LADIES’ COATS, EMBROIDERED IN GOLD” MASTERS OF EMBROIDERING IN GOLD AND EMBROIDRESSES OF THE IMPERIAL COURT OF THE TIME OF CATHERINE II

The article is dedicated to embroiderers in golds and embroidresses of the imperial court of the times of Catherine II. For the first time in scientific literature, on the basis of archival materials, the names of foreign craftsmen who headed the “gold embroidery workshops” working for the imperial court were revealed. The names of Russian embroiderers in gold who were on the staff of the imperial court are mentioned. The basis for the article was the oral decrees of Catherine II regarding her room amount, through which invoices for paying for the work of the craftsmen passed.

Building Wireless Performance Evaluation of Channel Hardening for Massive MIMO System

This letter proposes the first building wireless performance evaluation scheme considering channel hardening for an indoor massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We first define a metric, channel hardening obstruction (CHO), to describe the expectation value change of channel hardening ratio that a building under design (BUD) brings about. Then, the closed-form expressions are derived for the defined metric. Finally, we carry out Monte-Carlo simulations to validate the proposed scheme under various indoor scenarios, indicating the correlation between the CHO and BUD’s room amount. The proposed evaluation scheme can be used to design new or retrofit existing buildings with adequate massive MIMO performance.

The values of culture and architecture typology of Mandailing traditional house

Mandailing is one of bataknesse ethnic in North Sumatera which belong to strong to hold the customs and traditions Mandailing culture which reflected in the parts of the traditional houses. However rapidly the construction modern house make possibility the traditional house which enriched with culture value will be extinct.This studyto identify the value of culture and architecture typology of traditional house in Mandailing Natal North Sumatera. A case study using phenomenology method that is recording and serving the phenomenon which found in field as evidence that include existing condition from building. The finding show that 1) religion system or reliance in the front of location election, ornamentation orientation, construction system and room arrangement, 2) kinship system in the front of room organization, room amount and the completeness, 3) live philosophy found in shape and room arrangement which can accomodate all activity, 4) leadership system in the front of ornamentation shape and the meaning, pillar shape, house size vertically, and 5) social system in the front of roof shape, the used of decoration style and room arrangement. Reconstruction of Apartment in the Meltzer’s Apartment House

The article considers the problem of great amount of communal apartments in Saint-Petersburg. There are several types of a settling program. One of the types is considered in this project, when the apartments in the old houses are purchased by people with high incomes who are able to resettle communal apartments. This project considered apartment in the Meltzer’s apartment house. Mainly practical things were developed, like a rational replan of the initial project, a certain amount of rooms with determined purposes, architectural and planning division of the apartment into guest and personal zones. As a result of reconstruction, initial compartment areas are recovered by combining the later created rooms. Long and narrow corridors converted into spacious halls.

Analytic Ballistic Performance Model of Whipple Shields

The dual-wall, Whipple shield is the shield of choice for lightweight, long-duration flight. The shield uses an initial sacrificial wall to initiate fragmentation and melt an impacting threat that expands over a void before hitting a subsequent shield wall of a critical component. The key parameters to this type of shield are the rear wall and its mass which stops the debris, as well as the minimum shock wave strength generated by the threat particle impact of the sacrificial wall and the amount of room that is available for expansion. Ensuring the shock wave strength is sufficiently high to achieve large scale fragmentation/melt of the threat particle enables the expansion of the threat and reduces the momentum flux of the debris on the rear wall. Three key factors in the shock wave strength achieved are the thickness of the sacrificial wall relative to the characteristic dimension of the impacting particle, the density and material cohesion contrast of the sacrificial wall relative to the threat particle and the impact speed. The mass of the rear wall and the sacrificial wall are desirable to minimize for launch costs making it important to have an understanding of the effects of density contrast and impact speed. An analytic model is developed here, to describe the influence of these three key factors. In addition this paper develops a description of a fourth key parameter related to fragmentation and its role in establishing the onset of projectile expansion.© 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd. HOV or General Purpose Lanes?

High occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes are used as a congestion management tool in many areas to encourage carpooling and transit by offering faster, more reliable trips than general purpose lanes (GPLs). However, they draw criticism from some groups as some motorists believe that they are underused. This article uses extensive data sets to compare user costs, specifically time and fuel costs, for two scenarios—(1) a single reversible HOV lane and (2) a GPL in each direction on the Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas—over a variety of mode and time shifts. These two scenarios were chosen because they would require approximately the same amount of room in the median of the Katy Freeway. With both high occupancy/toll operations and slugging on the Katy Freeway, the authors set out to see if this highly used HOV lane was the best use of this valuable real estate. Or would a pair of GPLs have provided lower total travel costs? In almost all examined scenarios, the two GPLs case had lower user costs than the HOV lane case.

The Programme for the Evaluation of Patient Care with Acupuncture (Pep-Ac) – a Project Sponsored by Ten German Social Health Insurance Funds

Objective The aim of the Programme for the Evaluation of Patient care with Acupuncture (PEP-Ac) was to investigate the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in patients with the following three indications: chronic headache, chronic low back pain and chronic osteoarthritic pain. This article provides an overview of the results of the whole programme. Methods The programme included five randomised trials, a large observational study, a survey of physicians providing acupuncture, and three systematic reviews. Results The results show that, for all three indications, acupuncture, when compared to no treatment, produces a clear benefit that lasts for at least several months. However the effects of point-specific acupuncture only offered a significant advantage over minimal acupuncture in the treatment of OA knee. Conclusions The evidence from these trials – on the one hand, a clear overall effect of acupuncture and on the other hand, the lack of evidence supporting its superiority over sham acupuncture for all indications except osteoarthritis of the knee – leaves a considerable amount of room for interpretation.

The interpretation of conservation instructions by five-year-old children.

SUMMARYThis paper presents an attempt to test Piaget's notion that the child's language reflects his cognitive level, by examining how five‐year‐olds interpret the conservation expression “same amount of room” and then attempting to re‐educate their semantics. Interpretations were generally in terms of height or shape, depending on whether children produced or selected the comparison, implying that failure at the classic conservation task is due to misinterpretation of the instruction rather than to witnessing the perceptual transformation. Correct interpretations were common when neither shape nor height variables were perceptually salient. Semantic re‐education corrected “shape” but not “height” interpretations, implying that failure to conserve is not a purely semantic failure.
