Estimating Maize Crop Height and Aboveground Biomass Using Multi-Source Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Remote Sensing and Optuna-Optimized Ensemble Learning Algorithms

Accurately assessing maize crop height (CH) and aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for understanding crop growth and light-use efficiency. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing, with its flexibility and high spatiotemporal resolution, has been widely applied in crop phenotyping studies. Traditional canopy height models (CHMs) are significantly influenced by image resolution and meteorological factors. In contrast, the accumulated incremental height (AIH) extracted from point cloud data offers a more accurate estimation of CH. In this study, vegetation indices and structural features were extracted from optical imagery, nadir and oblique photography, and LiDAR point cloud data. Optuna-optimized models, including random forest regression (RFR), light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), and support vector regression (SVR), were employed to estimate maize AGB. Results show that AIH99 has higher accuracy in estimating CH. LiDAR demonstrated the highest accuracy, while oblique photography and nadir photography point clouds were slightly less accurate. Fusion of multi-source data achieved higher estimation accuracy than single-sensor data. Embedding structural features can mitigate spectral saturation, with R2 ranging from 0.704 to 0.939 and RMSE ranging from 0.338 to 1.899 t/hm2. During the entire growth cycle, the R2 for LightGBM and RFR were 0.887 and 0.878, with an RMSE of 1.75 and 1.76 t/hm2. LightGBM and RFR also performed well across different growth stages, while SVR showed the poorest performance. As the amount of nitrogen application gradually decreases, the accumulation and accumulation rate of AGB also gradually decrease. This high-throughput crop-phenotyping analysis method offers advantages, such as speed and high accuracy, providing valuable references for precision agriculture management in maize fields.

Modeling Tomato Yield and Quality Responses to Water and Nitrogen Deficits with a Modified Crop Water Production Function

Increasingly severe crises, such as climate change, water scarcity and environmental pollution, pose significant challenges to global food security and sustainable agricultural development. For efficient and sustainable tomato cultivation management under resource constraints, quantitatively describing the relationship between yield-quality harvest and water-nitrogen application is practically beneficial. Two successive greenhouse experiments with three irrigation levels (1/3 FI, 2/3 FI, and full irrigation (FI)) and four nitrogen fertilizer treatments (0 FN, 1/3 FN, 2/3 FN, and full nitrogen (FN)) were conducted on tomatoes during the whole phenological stage. The tomato evapotranspiration and nitrogen application amount, yield, comprehensive quality, solid–acid ratio, and lycopene content were measured. Based on crop water production functions, three equation forms of water-nitrogen production functions containing 20 models were established and evaluated to predict tomato harvest parameters. The results show that water increased tomato yield while decreasing fruit quality, and the effect of nitrogen was primarily contrary. Water most significantly impacted tomato formation, and the interaction of water and nitrogen changed among different harvest parameters. Tomato yield and quality formation was more sensitive to water and nitrogen at the flowering and fruit maturation stages. Model Singh-2 outweighed other models for yield estimates, with an R2 of 0.71 and an RMSE of 0.11. Singh-Log, Singh-sigmoid and Rao-Root models were effective models for comprehensive quality, solid–acid ratio, and lycopene content prediction, with an R2 of 0.41, 0.62, and 0.42, and an RMSE of 0.33, 0.50, and 0.16, respectively. Finally, models in the form of f(ETi)·f(N) were ideal for tomato harvest prevision and are recommended for water and nitrogen management in tomato cultivation.

Optimizing Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Enhances Rice Yield, Dry Matter, and Nitrogen Use Efficiency

Optimizing nitrogen fertilizer management can effectively improve soil ecology, promote agricultural production, and increase the income of farmers and workers. Nitrogen fertilizer is an important factor in the growth and development of rice, and it is important to find out the optimal amount and frequency of fertilizer application for the super-hybrid early rice ‘Zhu LiangYou 819’ in Hunan Province, to give full play to its high quality and high yield characteristics. Various N fertilizer application frequencies (P1, basal–tiller fertilizer = 5:5; P2, basal–tiller–spike fertilizer = 4:3:3; P3, basal–tiller–spike–grain fertilizer = 4:3:2:1) and N application amounts (N1, 90 kg ha−1; N2, 150 kg ha−1; N3, 210 kg ha−1) were applied to the hybrid rice ZLY819. The results show that, under the same frequency of N application, ZLY819 had the highest yield, agronomic efficiency, and physiological utilization rate of N fertilizer with the N2 treatment, averaging 7.53 t ha−1, 18.10 kg kg−1, and 34.34%, respectively, with the yield under N2 being 19.38% higher than that under N1. For the same amount of N application, the yield, agronomic efficiency, partial factor productivity of N (PFPN), N contribution to seed, and N use efficiency (NUE) increased with an increase in the frequency of N application, mainly in the order of P3 > P2 > P1, whereby the yield of P3 was 10.11% higher than that of P1. According to the regression equation, the yield is higher when the amount of nitrogen application is 202.15 kg ha−1 and the fertilization frequency is four times. Appropriate N fertilizer management (P3N2) improved the rice growth characteristics, dry matter accumulation, crop growth rate, dry matter transport rate, dry matter contribution rate, and NUE, thus promoting an increase in the rice yield and efficient use of nitrogen.

Effects of different nitrogen application rates and picking batches on the nutritional components of Lycium barbarum L. fruits.

Lycium barbarum L., commonly known as wolfberry, is not only a traditional Chinese medicine but also a highly nutritious food. Its main nutrients include L. barbarum polysaccharide, flavonoid polyphenols, carotenoids, alkaloids, and other compounds, demonstrating its wide application value. This study investigated the effects of nitrogen application on the accumulation of the main nutrients and metabolites in wolfberry fruits under three different nitrogen application rates, namely, N1 (20% nitrogen (N) reduction, 540 kg·ha-2), N2 (medium N, 675 kg·ha-2), and N3 (20% nitrogen increase, 810 kg·ha-2,which is a local conventional nitrogen application amount.). Additionally, due to continuous branching, blossoming, and fruiting of wolfberry plants during the annual growth period, this research also explored the variation in nutritional composition among different harvesting batches. The contents of total sugar and polysaccharide in wolfberry fruit were determined by Fehling reagent method and phenol-sulfuric acid method, respectively;The content of betaine in fruit was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography,and the flavonoids and carotene in the wolfberry fruits were determined by spectrophotometry. Analysis of data over three consecutive years revealed that as nitrogen application increased, the total sugar content in wolfberry fruits initially decreased and then increased. The levels of L. barbarum polysaccharides, total flavonoids, and total carotenoids initially increased and then decreased, while the betaine content consistently increased. Different picking batches significantly impacted the nutrient content of wolfberry fruits. Generally, the first batch of summer wolfberry fruits had greater amounts of total sugar and flavonoids, whereas other nutrients peaked in the third batch. By employing a broadly targeted metabolomics approach, 926 different metabolites were identified. The top 20 differentially abundant metabolites were selected for heatmap generation, revealing that the contents of L-citrulline, 2-methylglutaric acid, and adipic acid increased proportionally to the nitrogen gradient. Conversely, the dibutyl phthalate and 2, 4-dihydroxyquinoline contents significantly decreased under high-nitrogen conditions. The remaining 15 differentially abundant metabolites, kaempferol-3-O-sophorosid-7-O-rhamnoside, trigonelline, and isorhamnosid-3-O-sophoroside, initially increased and then decreased with increasing nitrogen levels. Isofraxidin, a common differentially abundant metabolite across all treatments, is a coumarin that may serve as a potential biomarker for wolfberry fruit response to nitrogen. Differentially abundant metabolites were analyzed for GO pathway involvement, revealing significant enrichment in metabolic pathways and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites under different nitrogen treatments. In conclusion, a nitrogen application of 675 kg·ha-2, 20% less than the local farmers' actual application, was most beneficial for the quality of four-year-old Ningqi 7 wolfberry fruits. Consumers who purchase wolfberry-dried fruit for health benefits should not consider only the first batch of summer wolfberry fruits. These results offer a broader perspective for enhancing the quality and efficiency of the wolfberry industry.

Investigation of the regulatory effects of water and nitrogen supply on nitrogen transport and distribution in wolfberry fields.

Resource-based water shortages, uncoordinated irrigation, and fertilization are prevalent challenges in agricultural production. The scientific selection of appropriate water and fertilizer management methods is important for improving the utilization efficiency of agricultural resources and alleviating agricultural non-point source pollution. This study focused on wolfberry and compared the effects of four irrigation levels [full irrigation (W0, 75%-85% θf), slight water deficit (W1, 65%-75% θf), moderate water deficit (W2, 55%-65% θf), and severe water deficit (W3, 45%-55% θf)] and four nitrogen application levels [no nitrogen application (N0, 0 kg·ha-1), low nitrogen application (N1, 150 kg·ha-1), medium nitrogen application (N2, 300 kg·ha-1), and high nitrogen application (N3, 450 kg·ha-1)] on soil nitrate nitrogen (NO3 --N) transport, plant nitrogen allocation, and soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions during the harvest period of wolfberry. And this study used CRITIC-entropy weights-TOPSIS model to evaluate 16 water and nitrogen regulation models comprehensively. The results revealed the following: (1) The NO3 --N content of the soil decreased with increasing horizontal distance from the wolfberry. It initially decreased, then increased, and finally decreased with an increase in soil depth. The average NO3 --N content in the 0-100 cm soil layer ranged from 3.95-13.29 mg·kg-1, indicating that W0 > W1, W2, W3, and N3 > N2 > N1 > N0. (2) The soil NO3 --N accumulation ranged from 64.45-215.27 kg·ha-1 under varying water and nitrogen levels, demonstrating a decreasing trend with increasing horizontal distance. The NO3 --N accumulation at each horizontal distance increased with increasing irrigation and nitrogen application. The NO3 --N accumulation of W0N3 treatment increased by 5.55%-57.60% compared with the other treatments. (3) The total nitrogen content and nitrogen uptake in all wolfberry organs were W1 > W0 > W2 > W3, and N2 > N3 > N1 > N0. The maximum total nitrogen content and nitrogen uptake in W1N2 treatment were 3.25% and 27.82 kg·ha-1 in the roots, 3.30% and 57.19 kg·ha-1 in the stems, 3.91% and 11.88 kg·ha-1 in the leaves, and 2.42% and 63.56 kg·ha-1 in the fruits, respectively. (4) The emission flux and total emission of N2O increased with increasing irrigation and nitrogen application. The emission flux exhibited a transient peak (116.39-177.91 ug·m-2·h-1) after irrigation. The intensity of N2O emissions initially decreased and then increased with an increase in the irrigation amount. It also initially increased with increasing nitrogen application amount, then decreased, and finally increased again. The maximum emission intensity was observed under the W3N3 treatment (0.23 kg·kg-1). The N2O emission coefficients ranged from 0.17%-0.39%, in the order of W0 > W1 > W2 > W3 (except for N1) and N1 > N2 > N3. (5) Under varying water and nitrogen concentrations, N2O emission flux showed a positive linear correlation with soil pore water content and NO3 --N content and a negative linear correlation with soil temperature. The comprehensive evaluation revealed that a slight water deficit (65%-75% θf) combined with medium nitrogen application (300 kg·ha-1) decreased soil NO3 --N leaching, increased nitrogen uptake, and reduced N2O emission. These findings can serve as a reference for improving the efficiency and reducing emissions of wolfberry in the Yellow River irrigation region of Gansu Province and in similar climate zones.

Machine learning-based estimation and mitigation of nitric oxide emissions from Chinese vegetable fields

High fertilizer input and nitric oxide (NO) emissions characterize the intensive vegetable production system. However, the amount, geographic distribution, and effective mitigation strategies of NO emissions over Chinese vegetable fields remain largely uncertain. In this study, we developed a data-driven estimate of NO emissions and their spatial pattern in Chinese vegetable fields based on the Random Forest (RF) model. Additionally, we conducted a field experiment in a subtropical vegetable field to investigate the effect of climate-smart practices on NO emissions. The RF model results showed that soil NO emissions from Chinese vegetable fields were sensitive to nitrogen application amount, soil clay content, and pH. The total NO emission from Chinese vegetable fields in 2018 was estimated to be 75.9 Gg NO–N. The urgency to reduce NO emissions in vegetable fields was higher in northern than in southern China. Our meta-analysis and field experiment results suggested that biochar amendment and replacing chemical fertilizers with bio-organic fertilizers were win-win climate-smart management practices for mitigating NO emissions while improving vegetable production. Overall, our study provided new insights into NO emissions in vegetable soil ecosystems and can facilitate the development of regional NO emission inventories and effective mitigation strategies. These findings highlight the importance of adopting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices to reduce NO emissions and mitigate their adverse environmental impacts.

Controlled-Release Nitrogen Mixed with Common Nitrogen Fertilizer Can Maintain High Yield of Rapeseed and Improve Nitrogen Utilization Efficiency.

Field experiments were conducted to study the effects of different proportions of controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer mixed with quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer on the yield and nitrogen utilization efficiency of direct-seeding rapeseed. Using a conventional nitrogen application rate of 180 kg ha-1 as a control, a total of 5 types of available nitrogen fertilizers and different proportions of controlled-release nitrogen fertilizers were mixed for fertilizer treatment. The proportion of available nitrogen fertilizer used was 135 kg ha-1, and the addition ratios of the five types of controlled-release nitrogen fertilizers were 0%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100%, respectively (i.e., the proportion of controlled-release nitrogen to the total nitrogen application amount). These ratios were represented as N135R0, N135R1, N135R2, N135R3, and N135R4, respectively. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the number of pods per plant, the number of seeds per pod, or the grain yield under the treatment of controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer mixed with quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer for proportions of 30-50% (N135R1~R3) when compared with the control, and a stable yield was achieved. Mixing controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer under reduced nitrogen application can significantly improve the apparent utilization rate of rapeseed nitrogen fertilizer, but it first increases and then decreases with the increase of the controlled-release nitrogen mixing ratio, reaching its highest under the N135R2 treatment. The agronomic utilization efficiency and partial productivity of nitrogen fertilizer first increased and then decreased with the increased proportion of controlled-release nitrogen, and both reached their highest utilization with the N135R2 treatment. The mixed treatment of controlled-release nitrogen did not affect soil urease activity, but significantly increased soil sucrase activity. The mixed treatment of controlled-release nitrogen also increased soil microbial biomass nitrogen and carbon content. Especially in the flowering stage, the soil microbial biomass nitrogen and carbon content was significantly higher under a controlled-release nitrogen mixing ratio of 30-50%. At the same time, it had a similar effect on soil inorganic nitrogen content. Therefore, a controlled-release nitrogen mixing treatment provided sufficient nitrogen for the key growth period of rapeseed. Under the condition of reducing the amount of nitrogen fertilizer by 25% based on the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied to conventional rapeseed, the application of controlled-release urea mixed with common nitrogen fertilizer mixed at a ratio of 30-50% can be an effective way to maintain grain yield levels and improve nitrogen utilization efficiency.

Comprehensive Regulation of Water–Nitrogen Coupling in Hybrid Seed Maize in the Hexi Oasis Irrigation Area Based on the Synergy of Multiple Indicators

Water scarcity and the excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer are key factors limiting the sustainable development of the hybrid seed maize industry in the oasis agricultural areas of the Hexi Corridor in China. To determine the optimal water–nitrogen management regime of hybrid seed maize, we established a field experiment in 2020–2021 with three irrigation quotas (W1, W2, and W3 were 60, 80, and 100% of the local conventional irrigation quota, respectively) and four nitrogen application levels (N0, N1, N2, and N3 were 0, 190, 285, 380 kg·hm−2). We analysed the influence of different water–nitrogen combinations on indices of seed vigour, yield, water use efficiency (WUE), irrigation water use efficiency (IUE), the partial productivity of nitrogen fertilizer (NFP), and the nitrogen fertilizer agronomic use efficiency (NFA) of hybrid seed maize. A comprehensive growth evaluation system for hybrid seed maize was established based on the AHP, entropy weight, and TOPSIS methods, and a coupled water–nitrogen response model for hybrid seed maize was established with the objectives of obtaining high-yield, efficient, and high-seed vigour. The results showed that the yield of hybrid seed maize, NFP, and NFA gradually increased with the increase in the irrigation amount, while IUE continuously decreased; the yield of hybrid seed maize, WUE, and NFA increased and then decreased, while NFP continuously decreased with an increase in the amount of nitrogen application. Further, treatment N2W3 had higher water and nitrogen use efficiency and the highest yield and seed viability with a yield of 9209.11 kg·hm−2 and germination percentage, germination index, and vigour index of 97.22, 58.91, and 1.55%, respectively. The model of the integrated growth response of hybrid seed maize to water–nitrogen showed that the combined benefits of the hybrid seed maize yield, WUE, and seed viability could be maximised in conjunction with the irrigation rate ranging from 3558.90 to 3971.64 m3·hm−2 and the fertiliser application rate of 262.20 to 320.53 kg·hm−2. This study can provide scientific guidance and act as a decision-making reference for the productive, efficient, and sustainable development of hybrid seed maize in the oasis agricultural area of the Hexi Corridor.

Groundwater Depth and Nitrogen Application Amount Jointly Regulate the Water and Residual Soil Nitrate Accumulation in Agricultural Soil Profile

Despite the known influence of groundwater conditions and nitrogen application on crop growth and the soil microenvironment, less information is available on the influence of groundwater depth and nitrogen application amount on the movement and accumulation of soil water and residual nitrate in deep soil in summer maize–winter wheat rotation systems. Therefore, a large lysimeter experiment was conducted to examine how groundwater depth and nitrogen application amount influence the transport and accumulation of soil water and nitrate in the summer maize (Zea mays L.)–winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation system. The results showed that nitrogen reduction increased soil water storage both in the summer maize and winter wheat fields. The residual soil nitrate accumulation in the entire soil profile of summer maize and winter wheat under deeper groundwater depth treatment was higher than that of shallow groundwater depth treatment. Hence, the deeper the groundwater depth, the longer the nitrate transport path, and the nitrate that would have entered the groundwater accumulates in deep soil. The residual soil nitrate accumulation in the whole soil profile of winter wheat was 76.05–130.11 kg ha−1 higher than that of summer maize. Structural equation models (SEMs) showed that the nitrogen application amount not only exhibited a directly positive effect on the residual soil nitrate accumulation but also indirectly influenced it by regulating total soil nitrogen; groundwater depth only exhibited a directly negative effect on residual soil nitrate accumulation; and soil depth had an indirect positive effect on residual soil nitrate accumulation through the regulation of soil water storage. Together, our findings prove that groundwater depth and nitrogen application amount jointly regulate the residual soil nitrate accumulation in agricultural soil rotated with winter wheat and summer maize. Therefore, in formulating a fertilization strategy for regional agricultural green development, it is necessary to consider the fertilizer application amount rate and the groundwater depth.

Appropriate Water-Nitrogen Regulation Mode to Improve Productivity of Mixed-Sowing Grassland of Bromus inermis and Alfalfa

Scientific selection of appropriate herbage planting management mode is an important guarantee to promote artificial grassland development and grassland productivity. In this study, three-year-old alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and bromus inermis were applied to analyze the effects of planting patterns (bromus inermis and alfalfa mixed-sowing D1, bromus inermis mono-sowing D2), nitrogen application (pure nitrogen) level (N1: 60 kg·ha−1, N2: 120 kg·ha−1), and water regulation (upper and lower limits of irrigation are calculated as a percentage of field capacity θf, W1: slight water deficit 65~85% θf, W2: moderate water deficit 55~85% θf, W3: serious water deficit 45~85% θf) on herbage growth and water-nitrogen use efficiency. This research applied the principal component analysis, the TOPSIS model, and the combination evaluation to evaluate each treatment. Results demonstrated that (1) the plant height, leaf area index, and yield of mixed-sowing herbage were 81.63%, 119.52%, and 111.51%, higher than the mono-sowing herbage. Increasing the amount of irrigation and nitrogen application could enhance herbage yield. The herbage yield with the W1N2 treatment was the highest. In this treatment, the mixed-sowing herbage yield was 26,050.73 kg·ha−1, and the mono-sowing herbage yield was 12,186.10 kg·ha−1. (2) The crude protein content of mixed-sowing herbage increased by 41.44%, higher than mono-sowing herbage, and the relative feeding value decreased by 16.34%. Increasing irrigation and nitrogen application could improve the quality of herbage. Meanwhile, the quality of herbage treated with W1N2 was the best. (3) The water use efficiency (WUE), irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), partial factor productivity of nitrogen (PFPN), and crude protein water use efficiency (CPWUE) of mixed-sowing herbage were significantly higher than mono-sowing herbage. The PFPN and the CPWUE of herbage improved with increasing irrigation amount. Meanwhile, the WUE, the IWUE, and the CPWUE of herbage also improved with increasing nitrogen application amount. The results showed that mixed-sowing of alfalfa and bromus inermis with slight water deficit (upper and lower limit of irrigation was 65~85% θf) and nitrogen application (120 kg·ha−1) could have the best comprehensive production effect. At the same time, it was a planting and management mode of high yield, high quality, and high efficiency of artificial herbage in the oasis-desert interlacing area of Hexi, Gansu Province, China, and areas with similar climates.

Chinese Violet Cress (Orychophragmusviolaceus L.) Yield and Nitrogen Balance in Response to Coupling Effects of Water–Nitrogen Application—A Case Study Using 15N Tracing Technique

The accurate and efficient management of water and nitrogen is of significance for the intensive production of field-cultivated flowers. To investigate the effects of different irrigation and nitrogen application modes on the growth, development, and nitrogen use of Orychophragmus violaceus, three nitrogen application doses of 120, 160, and 200 kg/ha and three irrigation treatments of 50 + 30 mm (overwintering water and regreening water), 75 + 45 mm, and 100 + 60 mm were implemented. The 15N isotope tracing technique was used to investigate the fertilizer nitrogen use, soil nitrogen residue, and nitrogen balance of Orychophragmus violaceus, and the entropy weight coefficient evaluation model was employed to optimize the water and nitrogen strategy. Results showed that after the application of water and nitrogen, the fresh yield of Orychophragmus violaceus increased by 21.4–49.3%, W2N3 possessed the most obvious effect on promoting yield increase, and the fresh yield reached 31.1 t/ha. The highest plant nitrogen use efficiency (39.1%) was detected in W2N2, but no significant (p > 0.05) difference of nitrogen use efficiency was found between W2N2 andW3N2. After the peak flowering period, 23.8–39.1% of the fertilizer nitrogen was absorbed by the plants, 44.3–59.2% remained in the soil, and 13.7–21.6% was lost via deep seepage, a gaseous state, or other unknown ways. A higher application amount of water or nitrogen increased the risk of nitrogen loss. Among the treatments, W2N2 treatment has the highest entropy weight coefficient evaluation value of 0.905, indicating that W2N2 was the water–nitrogen coupling mode with optimal comprehensive benefits. It was recommended that 75 mm of overwintering water and 45 mm of regreening water combined with a 160 kg/ha nitrogen application amount is the suitable water and nitrogen regulation scheme for Orychophragmus violaceus.

Effects of nitrogen application level on the physiological characteristics, yield and fruit quality of blackberry

To study the optimal amount of nitrogen application for blackberry plants, different amounts of ammonium sulfate were applied to three-year-old healthy ‘Shuofeng’ blackberry plants at three key growth stages (early bud burst, the flowering stage and the fruit veraison stage) to explore the effects of nitrogen fertilizer application level on the physiological characteristics of leaves, yield and fruit quality of blackberry. Overall, the leaves turned yellow, and cellular metabolism was disrupted in the CK group (no nitrogen fertilization). Among the nitrogen treatments, the leaf chlorophyll content, photosynthesis efficiency and antioxidant enzyme activity were significantly higher under the T2 (40 g plant−1) and T3 (60 g plant−1) treatments than under the T1 (20 g plant−1) and T4 (80 g plant−1) treatments, while the contents of ascorbic acid, glutathione, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde showed the opposite trends. The yield, single-fruit weight, solids–acids ratio and anthocyanin contents of blackberry fruits increased first and then decreased with increasing nitrogen application. The contents of polyphenols and ellagic acid in fruits decreased with increasing nitrogen application. Correlation and principal component analysis showed that yield and its components were closely related to leaf photosynthesis characteristics and the antioxidant system (P<0.05). Application of 20 g ammonium sulfate per plant at early bud burst, the flowering stage and the fruit veraison stage was profitable, which resulted in more vigorously growth, increased yield and fruit quality, while the production cost was the most economical because of the low fertilizer consumption.

Linear dependency of winter wheat yield and nitrogen use efficiency on the pre-anthesis temperature in the lower reach of the Yangtze River

Global warming is expected to enhance the nitrogen (N) absorption capability of crops, which causes a change in nitrogen fertilizer input. However, the impacts of warming and nitrogen application on crop growth, yield and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) are still unclear. Here, we conducted a 4-year field experiment of nighttime warming before winter wheat anthesis to explore the response of winter wheat yield to warming and the variation in nitrogen use efficiency under different nitrogen application levels (N150: 150 kg·ha−1, N225: 225 kg·ha−1, and N375: 375 kg·ha−1). The results showed that warming shortened the winter wheat vegetative growth period (VGP) by 8.3 days, while it prolonged the reproductive growth period (RGP) by 6.7 days. However, there was no significant difference in the growth period of winter wheat between nitrogen treatments. Meanwhile, warming increased winter wheat yield by increasing the number of effective spikes and grains per spike. Every 1 °C increase in pre-anthesis temperature increased winter wheat yield by 45.48, 55.78 and 60.88 g·m−2 for the N150, N225 and N375 treatments, respectively. There was no significant difference in yield between the N225 and N375 treatments, but the nitrogen partial factor productivity (PFPN) and the nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE) of N225 were significantly higher than those of N375. PFPN and NUtE were positively correlated with pre-anthesis air temperature under different nitrogen treatments. Multiple linear regression showed that a 1.0 °C increase enhanced NUtE by 11.62%, 9.75% and 7.85% for the N150, N225 and N375 treatments, respectively, and enhanced the PFPN by 7.77%, 8.94% and 9.81% respectively. Therefore, we suggest that 225 kg·ha−1 is an appropriate amount of nitrogen application in the lower reach of the Yangtze River under future climate warming.

Grass-legume mixture and nitrogen application improve yield, quality, and water and nitrogen utilization efficiency of grazed pastures in the loess plateau.

Grazing on cultivated grassland is a green agricultural model. However, in China's Loess Plateau, the type of cultivated grassland suitable for grazing and the amount of nitrogen application is still unclear, which has led to the failure of this model to be widely implemented. In this context, we set up an experiment using three grass planting types, including monoculture of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), monoculture of brome (Bromus inermis L.), and mixed planting of the two forages. Under each planting type, there were six management measures: grazing and no nitrogen application (GN1), grazing and 80 kg ha-1 nitrogen application (GN2), grazing and 160 kg ha-1 nitrogen application (GN3), cutting and no nitrogen application (MN1), cutting and 80 kg ha-1 nitrogen application (MN2), and cutting and 160 kg ha-1 nitrogen application (MN3). To explore the impacts of these treatments on pastures, we studied the effects on the yield, quality, and water use efficiency of the three cultivated grasslands. Results showed that alfalfa monoculture and alfalfa-brome mixed sowing grassland resulted in significantly higher hay yield, crude protein yield, water use efficiency (WUE), precipitation use efficiency (PUE), nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and agronomic efficiency of nitrogen (AEN) as compared to brome monoculture grassland. In addition, the crude protein, ether extract, and crude ash content of alfalfa monoculture and alfalfa-brome mixture were increased significantly while the contents of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were reduced, thereby increasing the relative feed value (RFV) during the two years. The forage hay yield, crude protein yield, ether extract, crude ash content, RFV, PUE, and WUE were significantly higher with GN1, GN2, and GN3 treatments than that with MN1 treatment. In contrast, the NDF and acid detergent fiber (ADF) content was significantly lower than the MN1 treatment. Furthermore, the fresh forage yield, crude protein yield, PUE, and WUE of GN3 treatment were significantly higher than that of GN1 and GN2 treatments in both years, while the NUE and AEN were significantly higher in GN2 and GN3 treatments than that of MN3 treatment. Based on these results, alfalfa-brome mixed cropping with the application of 160 kg ha-1 nitrogen under grazing conditions is an appropriate management practice for improving the forage yield, quality, and water- and nitrogen utilization efficiency of cultivated grassland in the Loess Plateau of China. This integrated management model is applicable to the cultivation and utilization of mixed grassland on nutrient-poor land in the Loess Plateau.

Simulated nitrogen deposition promotes the carbon assimilation of shrubs rather than tree species in an evergreen broad-leaved forest

Although understory addition of nitrogen (UAN) is commonly used to simulate nitrogen deposition in field studies in forest ecosystems, it ignores the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on the canopy. We studied the effects of nitrogen deposition simulated by UAN and by canopy addition of nitrogen (CAN) on leaf structure, chemical properties, Calvin cycle, and photosynthate distribution strategy of representative woody plant species in a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest in South China. The results showed that maximum photosynthetic rate (Amax) of shrub species Blastus cochinchinensis and Ardisia quinquegona under CAN treatments was significantly higher than that of UAN treatments at the same N addition concentration. The concentrations of intermediates (PGK, DPGA and G3P) in Calvin cycle of B. cochinchinensis and A. quinquegona, and Castanea henryi were significantly increased with CAN treatments, but the opposite was true with UAN treatments. CAN25 significantly increased starch concentrations of shrub species Lasianthus chinensis and B. cochinchinensis, and significantly decreased sucrose concentrations of shrub species A. quinquegona and tree species C. henryi. Correlation analyses showed that nitrogen application amount under different modes helped explain the changes in Amax and Calvin cycle intermediates. In summary, nitrogen deposition may promote the Amax and Calvin cycle of shrub species, and the adaptability of shrub species to nitrogen deposition is higher than that of tree species, which may help to explain the degradation of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest.

Evaluation of growth, yield, oil content, irrigation water use efficiency of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) at different levels of plant density and nitrogen content

Iran has been facing shortage of edible oil and a rapid growing population, and the country has to supplement the needs by importing. To investigate the effect of planting densities and different amounts of some traits of sunflower, an experiment was conducted as a split plot in the form of randomized complete blocks design with three replicates in the research farm of the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Centre of Semnan province (Shahrood). Plant density in four levels (4, 6, 8 and 10 plant.m−2) as a main plot and the amount of nitrogen levels (0.50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha−1) as sub-plot were considered. Leaf greenness index, plant height, 100-seed weight, seed nitrogen content and seed oil content were significantly affected by the simple effect of planting density and decreased with increasing plan density. Also, the nitrogen levels significantly affected the studied traits, so that by increasing the amount of nitrogen application, from control to 200 kg N ha−1, the leaf greenness index increased by 15.3%. At a density of four plant.m−2 and an increase in nitrogen levels, water use efficiency increased along with an increase height and leaf area index, but higher levels of plant density led to smaller plant yield, less plant biomass and lower water efficiency. The highest nitrogen use efficiency was obtained at a density of 8 plant.m−2 and no application of nitrogen fertilizer. Finally, maximum seed yield (4016 kg.ha−1) and oil yield (1827 kg.ha−1) were obtained by applying 150 kg N ha−1 and density of 8 plants.m−2.

The Influence of N2O Emission to Water and Nitrogen Coupling Mechanism in Black Soil under Drip Irrigation Mode

This experiment is aimed at revealing the main characteristics of N2O emission from soybean in black soil and clarifying the relationship between N2O emission and environmental factors; in this experiment, static chamber-gas chromatography field observation method was used; meanwhile, three different drip irrigation amounts (300 mm, 350 mm, and 400 mm) and five different nitrogen application amounts (0, 63, 72, 81, and 90 kg/hm2) were set up to study the effects of different coupling modes on soybean N2O emission and the relationship between N2O emission and environmental factors. The results showed that the peak value of N2O emission flux of soybean mainly occurred in July and August, and the amount of N2O emission flux in each growth period was flowering-podding period &gt; branching period &gt; seedling period &gt; grain filling period. N2O emission increased with the increase of drip irrigation amount and nitrogen application amount. The effects of drip irrigation and nitrogen application on N2O emission were significantly different. Under the three drip irrigation modes, the N2O emission fluxes of most treatments were significantly correlated with the temperature in that day, and the soil temperature in different soil depths was significantly correlated with the N2O emission fluxes. The correlation relationship between the temperature of each soil layer under drip irrigation 300 mm and N2O emission fluxes was less than that under drip irrigation 350 mm and drip irrigation 400 mm. There was no significant correlation between N2O emission flux and NH4+-N and NO3-N, and there was no significant correlation between N2O cumulative emission and dry matter quality in the aboveground part of soybean. It shows that the emission of N2O itself is affected by multiple environmental factors and shows certain randomness. The research results can provide important theoretical basis and technical support for realizing nitrogen reduction and efficient utilization of soybean water and fertilizer in the black soil region of northeastern part of China.

Low Temperature Rather Than Nitrogen Application Mainly Modulates the Floral Initiation of Different Ecotypes of Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

Rapeseed has formed three ecological types, namely winter, semi-winter, and spring during the long domestication process. Different ecotypes have different low-temperature requirements for floral initiation. Rapeseed growth has a large demand for nitrogen, and the amount of nitrogen application significantly impacts the number of flowering. Meanwhile, the time of floral imitation determined the quantity of floral bud, the final number of pods, and yield of rapeseed. Therefore, it is of great significance to understand the regulation of temperature and nitrogen on floral initiation. This experiment selected representative semi-winter and spring rapeseed varieties to study the leaf’s soluble sugar and protein concentration under different nitrogen supplies and the transcriptome reactions to vernalization for spring and semi-winter varieties rapeseed in transition to floral initiation. The results showed that the soluble sugar content and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio changed due to the different growth processes and nitrogen application rates. The increase of the sugar content to a peak could be regarded as the signal to start floral initiation. Reducing the nitrogen application rate increased the peak of sugar content, but the effect on the appearance time of the peak was not obvious. Under normal (20–25 °C) and low temperatures (10–15 °C), the floral initiation time of spring variety “1358” showed no difference, nor did expression of hub gene SOC1, which is involved in the flowering regulation network. The semi-winter variety “Zhongshuang No. 11” did not commence floral initiation under normal temperature because of the lacking of vernalization requirement. Low temperature promoted the floral initiation of semi-winter variety mainly through the FLC, SOC1, and LFY signaling pathways, and the gibberellin also played a positive factor in this process. In essence, the present study provides valuable information on the gene expression differences of vernalization-driven floral transition for spring and semi-winter ecotypes of rapeseed when the photoperiod is not an unlimited factor.

Effect of Irrigation and Fertilizer Management on Rice Yield and Nitrogen Loss: A Meta-Analysis.

Irrigation and nitrogen fertilizer application are two important factors affecting yield and nitrogen loss in rice fields; however, the interaction effects of different irrigation schedules and combined management of nitrogen fertilizer application on yield and nitrogen loss in rice fields remain unknown. Therefore, we collected 327 sets of data on rice yield and 437 sets of data on nitrogen loss in rice fields from 2000 to 2021 and investigated the effects of different water-saving irrigation schedules, nitrogen application levels, and water–nitrogen couplings on rice yield, nitrogen use efficiency, and nitrogen loss (N2O emissions, nitrogen runoff, nitrogen leaching, and ammonia volatilization) by meta-analysis using conventional flooding irrigation and no nitrogen treatment as controls. The results showed that alternate wet and dry irrigation and controlled irrigation had increasing effects on rice yield. Alternate wet and dry irrigation had a significant yield-increasing effect (average 2.57% increase) and dry cultivation significantly reduced rice yield with an average 21.25% yield reduction. Water-saving irrigation reduces nitrogen runoff and leaching losses from rice fields but increases N2O emissions, and alternate wet and dry irrigation has a significant effect on increasing N2O emissions, with an average increase of 67.77%. Most water-saving irrigation can increase nitrogen use efficiency. Among water-saving irrigation methods, the effect of controlled irrigation on increasing nitrogen use efficiency is 1.06%. Rice yield and nitrogen use efficiency both showed a trend of increasing then decreasing with nitrogen fertilizer application, and nitrogen loss gradually increased with the amount of nitrogen fertilizer input. Water–nitrogen coupling management can significantly reduce nitrogen loss in rice fields while saving water and increasing yield. Based on the analysis of the data in this study, when the irrigation amount was 300~350 mm and the nitrogen application amount was 200~250 kg/ha, the rice yield and nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency were at a high level, which corresponded to the irrigation schedule of controlled irrigation or alternating wet and dry irrigation in the literature. However, different rice-growing areas are affected by rainfall and land capability, etc. Further optimization and correction of the adapted water and fertilizer management system for paddy fields are needed. The optimal water–nitrogen pattern of this study can achieve high rice yield and reduce nitrogen loss.
