Environmental Impact Assessment of a Dumping Site: A Case Study of Kakia Dumping Site

Open dumping threatens the environment and public health by causing soil, water, and air pollution and precipitating the deterioration of the environmental balance. Therefore, sustainable waste management practices and compliance with environmental regulations are important to minimize these negative impacts. In this context, it is very important to identify the environmental damage inflicted by open dumping areas and to take measures to prevent this damage. Makkah is among the cities that still use open dumping for solid waste disposal. The rapid increase in this city’s population is generating large quantities of municipal solid waste (MSW), making it difficult to manage waste economically without harming the environment or public health. During Umrah and Hajj, the rate of MSW generation increases to an even greater degree. The sustainable management of MSW in holy cities is of great importance. This study aimed to investigate the environmental impact of the Kakia Open Dumping Site in Makkah on air quality, soil, and nearby groundwater wells. It also conducted analyses of essential elements (Ca, Mg, and Na), heavy metals (Pb, Cd, and Cr), and a metalloid (As) in leachate produced at the Kakia Open Dumpsite, enabling the development of management strategies. In addition, the correlations between the essential elements, the metalloid, and the heavy metals were also analyzed. The goal is not only to mitigate the negative effects of open dumping, but also to highlight the need to adopt sustainable management strategies for MSW in religiously significant cities like Makkah.

Assessing microbial stability and predicting biogas production in full-scale thermophilic dry methane fermentation of municipal solid waste

Compared to typical anaerobic digestion processes, little is known about both sludge microbial compositions and biogas production models for full-scale dry methane fermentation treating municipal solid waste (MSW). The anaerobic sludge composed of one major hydrogenotrophic methanogen (Methanoculleus) and syntrophic acetate oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Caldicoprobacter), besides enrichment of MSW degraders such as Clostridia. The core population remained phylogenetically unchanged during the fermentation process, regardless of amounts of MSW supplied (∼35 ton/d) or biogas produced (∼12000 Nm3/d). Based on the correlations observed between feed amounts of MSW from 6 days in advance to the current day and biogas output (the strongest correlation: r = 0.77), the best multiple linear regression (MLR) model incorporating the temperature factor was developed with a good prediction for validation data (R2 = 0.975). The proposed simple MLR method with only data on the feedstock amounts will help decision-making processes to prevent low-efficient biogas production.

A Longitudinal Analysis of the Impact of Digital Technologies on Sustainable Food Production and Consumption in the European Union.

In today's landscape, digital technologies hold immense potential in tackling challenges associated with food sustainability. This study aims to contextualize a broader investigation of food sustainability and digitalization within the agricultural sector. Its objective is to explore the influence of digital technologies on sustainable food production and consumption, particularly examining relationships among digital technologies, municipal waste, agricultural output, nitrogen emissions, methane emissions from agriculture, and Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG12). Through the use of Structural Equation Modeling, the empirical investigation scrutinizes the relationships between digital technology use and critical variables linked to food sustainability in a longitudinal analysis. The results highlight the significant impact of extensive digital technology use on municipal waste, sustainable production, and consumption, indirectly influencing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Empirical research findings reveal a negative influence of digital technologies on responsible consumption and production (path coefficient -0.349, p values < 0.001), suggesting an impact of digital technologies on diminishing sustainability in consumption and production. The relationship between digital technologies and municipal solid waste is also negative (path coefficient -0.360, p values < 0.001), suggesting that the use of digital technologies can contribute to reducing the amount of municipal solid waste. Digitalization has the potential to improve the sustainability of supply chains by reducing resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with production and distribution operations.

Model of lnformation Support for a Regional Operator for the Management of Municipal Solid Waste

The purpose of the research is to compile a modern model of information support for a regional operator for the management of municipal solid waste and analyze the requirements for this system.Methods are based on various publications of reports by environmental operators, the public law company "Russian Еcological Operator" (РРK RЕO), on legislative documentation, research and software solutions (SТЕC Housing and Рublic Utilities, Sirena Housing and Рublic Utilities, Еlectronic Тrading Рlatform RЕO) in terms of automation of waste removal.Results. А modern information model for data exchange in the network of a regional operator for the management of solid waste has been built, which meets the needs of the industry. Based on the legislation, the study included recom- mendations for the work and functioning of departments. Ready-made solutions for automating the work of a regional operator for the removal of municipal solid waste are presented. Аn algorithm has been developed for the functioning of the system to send data on the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) arriving at the landfill in accordance with the new requirements for automatic monitoring of waste accepted at the landfill.Conclusion. Тhe implementation of a modern level of information support for a regional operator for the management of municipal solid waste is relevant, not only from an environmental point of view, the formation of an integrated effective approach to waste management, but also from information security. Organizing the work of a regional operator for the management of municipal solid waste is a process that requires modern information support. Тo carry out the process of building competent logistics, infocommunication kits and data transmission systems are used to track vehicles trans- porting waste. Software is used to monitor the level of vehicle load, the total amount of waste removed, fuel consump- tion, analyze the load and condition of landfills with solid municipal waste, waste separation and recycling processes.

Development of municipal solid waste management guidelines in biological crisis based on international experiences and considering local techno-economic characteristics

In addition to health consequences, the Covid-19 pandemic has had important effects on the environment and lifestyle. Municipal solid waste management faced serious challenges due to consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic. In this study, the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the quantity and composition of municipal solid waste in Tehran were investigated. The international experiences of municipal waste management in the Covid-19 pandemic were reviewed and the results were used to develop a guideline for waste management in epidemic conditions adapted to local characteristics. The results showed that changes in the quantity of municipal solid waste affected by the Covid-19 pandemic had temporal and spatial variation. The most change in quantity by 15.81% was seen at the beginning of the pandemic, and non-recyclable waste had the most ratio change among the components of municipal solid waste (144%). The emergence of scattered point sources of infectious waste generation was the most important consequence of the epidemic in municipal solid waste management. These experiences were the basis for defining a guideline for the management of municipal solid waste in biological crises. A guideline in six activities and more than 90 items based on the local characteristics such as available equipment, general culture, local economy, and quantitative changes was defined.

A Comparative Benefit-cost Analysis for the Potential Waste Management Options for the Western Province, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka generates 7,000 metric tons of solid waste per day while only 3,242 tons are being collected. Within the Western province 1783 metric tons are collected daily. Management of municipal solid waste is mainly a responsibility of local governmental entities. Only a few waste management options are often practiced while economic aspects of this problem are rarely taken into consideration. The present study was designed therefore with the objective of analysing current and potential waste management options for the western province and identifying the best option that maximises the net benefit to the country. Seven different options for municipal solid waste management were identified for the analysis (option 1–open dumping; 2-sanitary landfilling; 3- recycling paper, polythene, glass and other recyclable waste (15%) and open dumping the rest; 4- composting the biodegradable (62%) and open dumping the rest (38%); 5-composting the biodegradable (62%), recycling paper, polythene, glass and other recyclable waste (15%) and open dumping the remaining; 6–waste to energy handled by the government; 7–waste to energy collaborated with private organizations). Then costs and benefits, including environmental costs related to each option were identified and quantified using literature and information obtained from interviews held with coordinators of waste management projects under both government and private sectors. Economic cost-benefit analyses were conducted for the seven options for a period of 30 years assuming that a constant amount of municipal solid waste (100 MT) per day is treated by each method. All seven models were developed on the basis of current municipal solid waste composition. According to the net present value analysis, five options resulted in negative net present values, while options four and five showed positive net present values. In the next step, the value of compost was re-estimated considering the replacement benefit of imported nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer which has yielded a much higher net present value than earlier. Furthermore, option five was identified as the economically most profitable option. The results of the study will provide guidance toward designing the most economically and environmentally viable waste management options for urban areas of Sri Lanka. &#x0D; Keywords: Municipal solid waste, Composting, Recycling, Cost-benefit analysis

How to Control Waste Incineration Pollution? Cost-Sharing or Penalty Mechanism—Based on Two Differential Game Models

This study explores whether the government should implement a cost-sharing or penalty mechanism to control waste incineration pollution and investigates which policy can best incentivize incineration plants to invest in pollution control. We design two differential game models, one based on a cost-sharing approach and one on a penalty system, to model the interactions between the government and incineration plants. We then compare and analyze the equilibrium outcomes in both scenarios. Our findings reveal that when incineration pollution significantly impacts the government, both the cost-sharing and penalty mechanisms are effective in stimulating incineration plants to enhance their pollution control efforts. However, when incineration pollution significantly affects the incineration plants themselves, the cost-sharing mechanism proves to be more effective in terms of pollution control. Furthermore, we find that the government derives greater utility under the cost-sharing mechanism compared with the penalty mechanism, especially as the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) increases. In contrast, incineration plants tend to generate higher profits under the cost-sharing mechanism. These findings and their accompanying managerial implications may provide valuable guidance for government agencies in formulating policies to manage incineration pollution and encourage waste incineration plants to invest in improving their pollution control systems. Techno-economic assessment of the CO2 value chain with CCUS applied to a waste-to-energy Italian plant

Recently, post-combustion CO2 removal has been considered also for the CO2 separation from the flue gases of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plants, that manage high amounts of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) by combusting it and generating power and heat. Moreover, because of the presence in MSW of an organic waste fraction, net negative CO2 emissions are feasible when integrating CCUS systems into WtE plants. Currently, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are only few incineration plants around the world that are successfully coupled with a carbon capture system, resulting in near-zero (or even negative) CO2 emission power generation.This work focuses on the evaluation of the whole value chain of the non-biogenic CO2 that is emitted in a power plant located in Northern Italy and on its possible utilization, from the CO2 source in the flue gas to the market-ready product.The design of the process for the CO2 removal from the flue gas has been carried out specifically for the considered flue gas to be treated with an aqueous solution of MonoEthanolAmine 30% wt., the benchmark solvent used in other types of power plants (fuelled by coal and natural gas). The main process parameters (e.g., lean loading, absorber packing height, regenerator packing height, regenerator pressure, gas inlet temperature, solvent inlet temperature) have been selected in order to optimize the reboiler duty and the water requirement, the latter being usually not considered in literature works dealing with this type of analysis. Then, the CO2 utilization has been evaluated, considering the options of both sequestration in the Adriatic Sea and utilization of CO2 for production of sodium bicarbonate, on the basis of the information available in the literature.In compliance with Directive 2003/87/EC and with the Italian legislation, Waste-to-Energy plants that treat municipal solid waste are currently exempt from the application of the CO2 Emissions Trading System (ETS). This article speculates about the application of the ETS to an urban WtE plant, located in Northern Italy, and evaluates its economic implications by comparing the purchase of emission quotas with the construction of a CCS or CCU plant.A business plan, detailing the obtained revenues from the utilization and from the avoided cost of purchasing emission allowances and the expenses related to the operation of the carbon capture plant, taking into account the taxes and the inflation, has been created and used for comparing the two considered CO2 value chains. For the option of CO2 sequestration, sensitivity analyses on the variation of investment costs (+10 %), operating costs (+10 %) and revenues (−10 %) have been performed and the breakeven value of the ETS certificate that can make the Net Present Value (NPV) non-negative has been determined. For the option of CO2 utilization, the revenue from sodium bicarbonate that can make its production profitable has been evaluated.

DCSNN optimized with hybrid Border Collie optimization and Archimedes optimization algorithms for solid waste prediction in Chennai

The rapid growth of smart cities and industry causes an increase in waste production. The amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) increases by several factors, including population growth, economic status, and consumption trends. The inadequacy of basic trash data is a major issue for managing MSW. Numer-ous existing models based on solid waste prediction have been presented so far, but none of them predict solid waste accurately and it consumes more time. To address these concerns, a deep convolutional spiking neural network for solid waste prediction (DCSNN-SWP) is proposed in this paper. Here, the real-time solid waste prediction data are gathered from the quantity of municipal corporation of Chennai (MCC), landfill, garden garbage, and coconut shell reports in Tamil Nadu (Chennai), such as Zone 9 (Nungambak-kam), Zone 10 (Kodambakkam) and Zone 13 (Adyar). Then the collected solid waste data are pre-processed using the kernel correlation model. Then the pre-processing data is given to DCSNN-hybrid BCMO and Archimedes optimization algorithm which accurately predicts the solid waste as wet waste, dry waste, horti-culture waste, and dumping yard for 2022–2032 years. The proposed DCSNN-SWP method has been implemented in Python.

Investigation of land surface temperature heterogeneity in municipal landfills by satellite images

With the increasing population and urbanization, the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) is increasing day by day. As a result, problems such as odor, fire, and intense biogas formation originate from landfills. In order to detect and solve these problems, landfills should be monitored regularly. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing offer fast and practical solutions for the regular monitoring of landfills compared to field studies. In this study, Kömürcüoda landfill on the Anatolian side of Istanbul is monitored throughout 2022 with open source Landsat8/9 and Sentinel-2 satellite images. In this context, the surface temperature heterogeneity of the landfill was mapped by generating Land Surface Temperature (LST) images for the landfill from the Landsat thermal band. Points with statistically significant high - low LST values were determined with Hot Spot Analysis. The average annual LST for 2022 was calculated as 25.5 °C. It was observed that LST had the highest values during the summer season and the lowest values during the winter season. Additionally, it has been determined that there are persistent hot spots and cold spots in the landfill. This study presents a simple methodology using open source satellite data to monitor LST and detect LST abnormalities on landfills.

Pollutant dispersion model in landfills by GILTT technique

The expansion of urban centers leads to an increase in the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW). In this way, due to the exorbitant amount of MSW produced annually, studies on the form of disposal of this waste are necessary, so that they are properly disposed of, due to environmental safety and reduction of risks to human health. Therefore, mathematical modeling is an essential tool in the study about the dispersion of pollutants in the porous medium, in this case, in relation to how the water table can be reached by these pollutants. Thus, this work intends to carry out a study of a two-dimensional model of the dispersion of pollutants in sanitary landfills, considering the governing equation in the dimensionless form. In the problem under study, a continuous and uniform leakage from a MSW storage cell is considered. The adopted model is solved by the Generalized Integral Laplace Transform Technique (GILTT) method, whose solution is analytical, except for the truncation error in the infinite series. The results obtained show that the proposed method is effective with the physical characteristics of the problem.

Development of a Common Waste Combustion System for Generating Electricity at Remote Area

Malaysia’s daily amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) has rapidly increased. This causes the landfills number to increase due to inadequate waste management systems. Apart from that, Malaysia depends on non-renewable resources for electricity generation which could have a significant effect on the environment. Therefore, this study proposed to reduce landfills in Malaysia in a proper way and supply electricity using municipal solid waste as a renewable resource. In this study, the combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW) produces steam, which will rotate a turbine that is connected to a dynamo. Then, the energized dynamo will supply electricity to appliances including a direct current motor. The motor shaft then rotates the dynamo shaft in the pulley system which causes the electricity to flow in a closed loop. In this system, a pressurized container is crucial to produce sufficient steam. Based on the experimental setup, it was observed that continuous electricity was successfully achieved by looping the system using a pulley on the dynamo and motor.

Policy analysis on municipal solid waste management in Dhaka South City Corporation, Bangladesh: A qualitative study

Background: Inadequate and improper municipal solid waste (MSW) management is one of the significant reasons behind the environmental deterioration in Bangladesh. The projected daily waste generation for 2025 in Dhaka City is 47,665 tons, half of which remains uncollected despite door-to-door community-based waste collection. There are few studies on MSW management in Bangladesh, most focusing on household-level waste management, measurement of the amount of MSW, etc., but none applied a political economy lens to examine the policy issues related to MSW management. This study aimed to explore the context, actors, and processes regarding MSW management of policies in Dhaka City, Bangladesh, applying the policy-triangle-framework. Methods: This study adopted an exploratory qualitative approach, and document reviews and key informant interviews were conducted from September 2016 to January 2017. Results: We found that the issue of MSW slowly entered the policy documents starting with the Sixth-Five Year Plan (2011-2015), with some earlier sporadic policy initiatives. Due to its being a relatively new concept, stakeholders still lack the expertise to tackle the issue leading to donor dependence. MSW management demands multi-stakeholder involvement, which, in turn, depends on multi-ministerial and -departmental coordination, which is chronically deficient. MSW policies, like most other social policies, demand citizen involvement, without which both policy formulation processes and their proper implementation are compromised. Conclusion: In order to overcome these policy challenges, the technical and financial capacity of the stakeholders for MSW management should be enhanced, high-level multi-ministerial coordination needs to be strengthened, and citizen empowerment and engagement must be ensured at every step of the MSW policy cycle.

Upgrading MSW pyrolysis oil through distillation and hydrotreatment for automobile engine applications: A short review

The demand for fossil fuel in today’s world is increasing at a higher pace with rapid population growth and industrial development. The reserve for petroleum-based fossil fuels is finite which necessitates the search for alternative fuels. Pyrolysis oil obtained from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) has drawn the attention of many researchers because of their high heating value and similar fuel properties with commercial automobile fuel and has potential to substitute commercial diesel fuel. Nevertheless, the crude oil obtained from pyrolysis of MSW has some shortcomings such as higher viscosity and density, lower flash point and cetane index, unpleasant odor, and higher sulfur content, preventing its useability as a drop in fuel for automobiles at present. In this short review, distillation and hydrotreatment post treatment procedures, amongst many others, are discussed for improving the properties of pyrolysis crude oil. Focus has been given on waste plastic and waste automobile tire pyrolysis oils as they constitute a significant amount of MSW currently. This review reported that noticeable improvement of the properties (cetane number, flash point, viscosity, and sulphur contents) of crude pyrolysis oil (PPO or TPO) can be achieved through distillation and/or hydrotreatment, which are comparable to the properties of standard diesel.

Characterization of Municipal Solid Waste Generated in Some Egyptian Cities

Municipal solid waste (MSW) poses a cumulative problem related to many aspects, namely, social, economic, and cultural. Therefore, such a situation must be accompanied by the development of well-established management systems starting with the knowledge of MSW quantities, its quality and characterization and ending with a suitable landfilling technique. This work aims to characterize Egyptian municipal solid waste generated from two cities in Great Cairo, where 45 samples were collected regularly. The research was carried out by researchers in the Chemical Engineering Department at Cairo University and selected undergraduate students from October to December 2020. The collected MSW was characterized by evaluating the quality and quantity of generated waste. Selected properties considered were: composition (including the organic fraction, papers, plastics, textiles, metals, glass, and others), density, moisture content, calorific value, and Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen Sulfer (CHNS) chemical elemental analysis. The results obtained showed that the organic fraction was dominant to other fractions (4287%) and the carbon content was more than 47% and the calorific values to range between 4360-12277 kJ/kg. The results obtained were used as a base for a waste management proposal, either from mass recovery for highrecyclable samples or energy recovery for high calorific value waste. In other circumstances, waste-to-energy WTE processes were recommended as a promising solution to developing countries in the world where the energy demand is essential for the life.

Assessment of The Geotechnical Properties of Municipal Solid Waste and Its Effect on The Surrounding Soil: A Review

Due to rapid growing of population and active lifestyle, massive amounts of municipal solid waste (MSW) are produced worldwide. The MSW can harm the environment and threaten the land if the dumping sites are not managed scientifically. The geotechnical properties of MSW are the key parameters required in the landfill operations and waste management facilities. Hence, presence of the geotechnical properties data of the waste can assist engineers in selecting possible solutions for extension of the landfill and obtaining prior background data for the evaluation and design of landfills. MSW disposal changes the geotechnical properties of soil. Also, alterations in the geotechnical properties of soils may contribute to the physical and physico-chemical interactions between soil and contaminants of the dumping sites. As leachate, which is generated by the waste, penetrates into the soil, it moves pollutants into the soil and influences the strength and stability of the soil. The main objective of this research is to summarize the most recent literature of the physical and mechanical properties of MSW, and their influence on the geotechnical properties of soil. The findings of numerous investigations on the physical and mechanical characteristics of MSW and soil influenced by MSW are presented and discussed. Depending on the reviewed research studies, it can be observed that the engineering characteristics of MSW are complicated and varied for various reasons. The waste components and degradation process can cause an increase in moisture content and unit weight, and a decrease in organic content, hydraulic conductivity and compressibility of MSW. Additionally, MSW sites significantly impact the physical and mechanical characteristics of underlain and surrounding soil and deteriorate the soil quality. Further, it was noticed that the influence of dumping on soil is reduced with depth due to less interaction between the soil and waste

Transition and Implementation of Circular Economy in Municipal Solid Waste Management System in Nigeria: A Systematic Review of the Literature

As the environment reaches field capacity and is unable to regenerate waste naturally, challenges resulting from municipal solid waste management (MSWM) are showing a global increase, especially in developing countries. Nigeria is a country with a huge quantity of municipal solid waste (MSW) without a functional and operational MSWM system. This systematic review of the literature (SLR) aimed at investigating knowledge application in view of the circular economy (CE) model in the management of MSW in Nigeria, while answering research questions on the adoption and implementation of the circularity principle. In line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol, a comprehensive search strategy was developed to source electronic versions of updated articles from the Scopus, Web of Science, and Sage databases. The search retrieved 476, 878, and 374 results, respectively. The search was limited to publications written in the English language between 2008 and 2022 and was downloaded via Endnote and screened using Rayyan.ai. The SLR was conducted between February and October 2022. Findings revealed some potential opportunities for the transition and implementation of CE by identifying major indicators and enablers, but pointed out some barriers, including weak legislation, poor funding, the non-engagement of professionals, the absence of infrastructure, a lack of strategic planning, uncivilized behavioral conduct, and demography. The need to improve the current practice of MSWM from the linear economy (LE) of take–make–dispose is crucial. Summarily, the transition towards CE in MSWM is feasible and it can be initiated through the application of the 3Rs and 12Rs while anticipating the provision of infrastructural and novel technologies for a functional MSWM framework.

Potential for Thermo-Chemical Conversion of Solid Waste in Canada to Fuel, Heat, and Electricity

The amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) generation in Canada was 34 million tonnes in 2018. Responsible waste management is challenging, but essential to protect the environment and to prevent the contamination of the ecosystem on which we rely. Landfilling is the least desirable option, and diversion through thermo-chemical conversion to value-added products is a good option for difficult-to-recycle waste. In this study, the amounts, moisture contents, heating values, and compositions of municipally collected solid waste produced in Canada are reported, a classification that is suitable for conversion purposes is proposed, and the potential for thermo-chemical conversion is determined. Much of the waste generated in Canada is suitable for being converted, and its potential for heat or electricity generation was determined to be 193 PJ/yr and 37 TWh/y, respectively. The GHG emissions that are saved through diversion from the landfill, while assuming the generated heat or electricity offsets natural gas combustion, gives a GHG reduction of 10.6 MMTCO2E/yr or 1.6% of Canada’s GHG emissions. The blending of waste in feedstocks can have varying effects on the amount of biogenic CO2 produced per unit energy in the feedstock, which is an important consideration for new projects. Other considerations include the heating values, moisture contents, and contaminant levels in the waste.

Development of a Sustainable Community Environmental Management Model by Using the Process Engage Educational Institutions and Communities

Background and Aims: The amount of municipal solid waste generated tended to increase during the year 2017-2019 and there is more reuse of municipal solid waste, in which incorrect disposal tends to decrease, but with the situation of the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 since the beginning of March 2020, and continued until a new wave of outbreaks in late 2020 and early 2021. The problem of solid waste is increasing, the Local authorities will collect and transport waste, which the municipality will do by itself, but some hire private companies to carry out the collection in the area for waste management problems that are mostly found as residual waste. Thus, this research was; (1) to study the problems and needs of sustainable community environmental management. (2) To find a model and develop a sustainable community environmental management model by using the participation process of educational institutions and communities. Materials and Methods: This research was a qualitative study in Kaeng Loengchan Sub-district, Mueang District, Maha Sarakham Province. The research tools were semi-structured, observational, and recording interviews with a target population of 30 participants. Use content analysis. Results: The results showed that; (1) The community environmental problem that is currently facing is the continuous increase of solid waste from consumption and household consumption which, if not properly managed, will cause chronic problems. (2) Sustainable community environmental management model found that (1) the implementation of the 5R principles in the household, (2) the establishment of a community waste bank, and (3) the use of an application system to help collect solid waste management data. Conclusion: The local government should develop further by incorporating them into local ordinances to develop and support the budget for expanding the results to other areas. And the development of a sustainable community environmental management model by using the participation process of educational institutions and communities.

Innovative approach to waste management: utilizing stabilized municipal solid waste in road infrastructure.

In recent years, a sudden upsurge in the quantity of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been observed, and the status quo demands a constructive and economically viable solution. The use of stabilized municipal solid waste (SMSW) in road construction can help in reducing the burden on landfills and waste management authorities. In the existing study, SMSW was accumulated from the Okhla landfill which is situated in New Delhi that is rich in an organic content. This SMSW was then blended with soil (5%, 10%, and 15%) and bottom ash with varying percentages (10%, 20%, 30%) individually and a mix of soil and bottom ash in the ratio of 1:1 to reduce the content of organic matter. The blended sample was then tested to check its compaction value, California bearing ratio (CBR), unconfined compressive strength (UCS), durability, and scanning electron microstructure (SEM). The results indicated that the addition of bottom ash to SMSW decreases the maximum dry unit weight that varies between 1.65 and 1.51 KN/m3 while this value reduces to 1.72 to 1.67 KN/m3 in the case of the bottom ash-soil blend. Also, CBR value reduces to 25.50 to 18.00% in case of bottom ash and 25.89 to 21.92% for bottom ash-soil samples and inverse in the case of SMSW samples blended with soil ranges between 19.95 and 22.59%. The California bearing ratio value of all samples under soaked condition meets the minimum criteria (> 10%) as specified in IRC SP-72 for low-volume roads, but at the same time failed to meet the durability specifications. Thus, it is recommended to use this soil subgrade material in arid regions.
