Trends in the development of institutions and forms of artistic communication in modern St. Petersburg

The subject of the study is the works of contemporary St. Petersburg artists of different generations and creative trends, as well as the forms and features of their communication with each other and with the general as well as professional public. The trends of artistic communication in the city are determined by the activities of such institutions as art and non-art museums, art galleries and exhibition centers, which are a classic form of presentation of contemporary art; alternative venues such as creative spaces and art clusters. The field of attention also includes the attraction of St. Petersburg authors to the organization of small artistic associations, mainly art groups, for example, "Unconquered", "North-7", "Parasites", etc. In addition to works of art, theoretical works and reflections by researchers of contemporary art in St. Petersburg and the spaces of its public presentation are involved. The methodological basis is the analysis of the works of St. Petersburg masters of the beginning of the XXI century in the context of the development of urban institutions of artistic communication. The research is based on theoretical works devoted to the problem of artistic communication and trends in the current art process. Comparative-interpretative and typological methods are used to compare the works of artists and forms of artistic communication. The problem of artistic communication in the field of fine art in St. Petersburg is becoming the subject of a separate study. This area of city life is currently developing quite dynamically, as new art associations, curatorial practices and alternative classical platforms for the presentation of the work of authors belonging to different generations and art movements are emerging. Traditional museums and galleries, as well as creative spaces, art clusters and other often non-core institutions, such as libraries and cafes, are involved in this process. Against this background, the features of St. Petersburg artistic communication crystallize, which is characterized by a desire to organize communities, to fuse realistic traditions and current trends, to escapism and symbolism, as well as an interest in oriental themes and stylistics.

‘No distinction exists as to religion, profession, or sex’: Imperial Reform and the Electoral Culture of the East India Company's Court of Proprietors, 1760–84

AbstractAs contemporaries frequently pointed out, and often in disparaging terms, the governing institutions of the British East India Company contained an almost unprecedented ‘democratical’ element. By this, they were referring to the Company's General Court of Proprietors, its sovereign deliberative body, composed of all East India stockholders. Ownership of certain proportions of stock conferred the rights to participate in debate, to vote on policy, and to elect on an annual basis the directors who governed the day‐to‐day affairs of the Company. These electoral rights were granted solely by virtue of stock‐ownership and made no distinctions based on sex, social status, nationality or religion. This article examines the ways in which women, non‐Britons and religious minorities, in particular, took advantage of the opportunities for political participation opened up by the politicisation of the East India Company's general court in the 1760s, as well as the ways in which this was discussed and debated by contemporaries both in parliament and the press. Tracing the political activities of Mary Barwell, William Bolts and Joseph Salvador provides a unique window into a variety of ways in which the Company offered an alternative venue for political activity for groups often otherwise excluded from the formal politics at Westminster. In doing so, it also shows how the democratic elements of the Company's general court played a significant role in shaping the reform of the East India Company between 1767 and 1784, a process which ultimately led to their curtailment.

Interpretace archeologických obsahů na příkladu edukačního projektu Epidemie– Pandemie–Archeologie v Západočeském muzeu v Plzni

Archaeology is perceived as an interdisciplinary field, and collaboration with other scientific disciplines is natural. The cooperation between archaeology and pedagogy and didactics is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of revising educational programs and emphasizing inquiry-based learning and object-based education. The new direction of education focuses on informal learning and collaboration with memory institutions such as museums, which serve as alternative educational venues. The programs of the Museum of Western Bohemia in Pilsen can also be considered an important part of education and the dissemination of information about archaeology and history to the public. The educational program “Epidemics-Pandemics-Archaeology” at the Museum of Western Bohemia in Pilsen developed, between 2021–2022, is an interdisciplinary project that connects archaeology, paleopathology, and pedagogy. The project responds to the current topic of pandemics and is linked to archaeological research conducted in Pilsen, particularly in the museum’s branch buildings. The goal of the program is to present epidemics in a broader historical framework from prehistory to the present, using archaeological finds as examples, and to present their historical and cultural context in an understandable manner while enabling active participation and interaction for the participants. In the dissemination of information from archaeology to the public, museum pedagogy plays a crucial role, working in an authentic environment, providing the presence of original artifacts, and offering didactic tools for effective education. The target audience of the program includes primary and secondary school students and students in multi-year grammar schools.

Abstract A072: Cancer health education in high schools: A qualitative analysis of student gains

Abstract Background. Cancer disparities are prevalent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Community member feedback highlighted the importance of cancer education in reducing these disparities. Extension into alternative venues, such as high schools, can provide an innovative way to promote and provide cancer health information. The Cancer Health Education Curriculum (CHEC) provides high school students with an overview of cancer biology, cancer risk factors, early detection and screening methods, cancer treatment, survivorship, and cancer disparities. To reinforce their learnings, students complete a group project focused on a particular topic of interest. Integrated into the curriculum is a Service-Learning project in which students disseminate the information they learn to the community via a booth at the class sponsored “Cancer Health Fair,” a 30-second public service announcement or sharing their information with five friends and/or family members. Previously we published the effects on knowledge, beliefs and behaviors. In this presentation, we examine if outcomes differ by type of Service-Learning project. We also explore students’ perceptions of anticipated and achieved gains before and after the curriculum, as well as community feedback on the Service-Learning component. Methods. Data was collected between 2017-2019 at a Milwaukee Public High School. Students completed surveys before and after completion of the CHEC that included measures of cancer health knowledge, a validated measure of cancer fear and fatalism and Behavior Risk Factor Survey Study items querying about fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, tobacco use and screen time. Pre-curriculum surveys also include the open-ended question, “What do you hope to gain from CHEC,” and post-curriculum surveys include the question, “What did you gain from CHEC.” Quantitative data pre-post were compared using paired t-tests. Qualitative analysis was completed by participants by semester who responded to both pre and post question through coding and theme creation. Results. 521 students with a mean age of 15 completed the curriculum. Quantitative results showed significant improvements in cancer-related knowledge (p < 0.0001), cancer fear and fatalism (p < 0.0001) and three of eight health behaviors assessed showed significant improvement. Qualitative data analyses showed the most predominate response themes from the “gains” question included 1) understanding cancer better, 2) decreasing fear, 3) wanting to make healthy behavioral changes, 4) gaining skills to talk with family and friends about cancer. Qualitative data suggests that the creation of seminal messaging through health education and Service-Learning contributed to change in perception and attitude. Qualitative data through gains analysis will be presented by Service-Learning type. Study results also support the feasibility of integrating cancer education, leveraging a Service-Learning requirement, and the potential for such programs to impact friend/family communications related to cancer. Dynamic Changes and Recovery in Event Venues: Perspectives from MICE Event Planners and Venue Managers

The study examines the role played by event venues in helping the MICE event industry in South Africa recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, adapt to new conditions and innovate. The analysis is based on qualitative data collected during in-depth interviews with MICE event venue suppliers and planners. It was found that a crucial first step in order to reopen these venues was to ensure compliance with safety regulations. In response to the quick shift to virtual and hybrid events, many venues implemented necessary upgrades to accommodate such forms of participation. A number of event planners also considered using multiple venues to host large-scale events. The crisis caused by the pandemic re-emphasised the importance of alternative event venues and outdoor spaces. The study has implications for MICE event planners and suppliers.

PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ OPINIONS ON THE ROLE OF MUSEUMS IN VALUE TRANSMISSION

The transmission of values through social studies education remains a central subject of interest. The search for alternative resources to foster and sustain this transmission process has recently intensified. 'Museums', recognized as alternative spaces within out-of-school learning contexts in social studies, are increasingly acknowledged as crucial in facilitating value transmission. This research seeks to elucidate the role of museums in this process, primarily through the perspectives of pre-service social studies teachers. The study employed qualitative research methods and was constructed within a case study design framework. Data collection relied on focus group discussions with the pre-sercive teachers, with the subsequent content analysis used for data interpretation and explanation. Through dialogues with the participants, it became apparent that the transmission of values in social studies, a fundamental course for life learning, was a predominant concern. Out-of-school learning experiences are deeply integrated with social studies due to their interdisciplinary and multifaceted nature. In light of this, the participants’ perspectives and recommendations concerning the role of 'museums' as alternative venues for value transmission within the scope of social studies were predominantly positive. SOARinG to New Heights Through a Structured Medical Student Research Program.

Since the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 became Pass/Fall in 2022, medical students competing for residency spots must distinguish themselves with alternative criteria. Research experiences and output offer valuable skill development and objective metrics to support competitive residency applications. We describe the methodological development of a structured program to support, enhance, and track medical student research efforts at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, explain the implementation of the program, and summarize initial program outcomes. The Student Opportunities for Academic Achievement Through Research in Greenville (SOARinG) Program was established to serve as a centralized hub for rising second year medical student research. The program matched medical students with mentored research projects scheduled during the summer following first-year coursework. The program included a required weekly seminar series on research basics and current biomedical literature. SOARinG culminated with a student research symposium for which students submitted abstracts and presented a poster or a talk. Quantitative and qualitative program outcomes of student and mentor satisfaction with the program were measured through surveys. The program was successfully implemented in summers 2021 and 2022. Most students (80-95%) in each class engaged in mentored summer research projects. Students reported overall satisfaction with research projects and mentor support. Overall, 69% of students rated their overall research experience in the program as extremely good or very good. Each student submitted an abstract and presented at the program's symposium or alternate research venue. Overall, 97% of research mentors reported that students were adequately prepared for summer research and suggested that students would benefit from additional skills-specific research training. The SOARinG Program provided a formalized process for tracking and showcasing medical student research and allowed for increased student participation in research. Additionally, each participating student produced objective research output, thus enhancing future residency applications.

Adaptability of Governance Arrangements in Response to COVID-19: Effectiveness of Hierarchy Market or Collaborative?

The need for agile and adaptable health systems to cope with disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic is well established. Developing countries’ health systems are a mix of market, hierarchy, and collaborative arrangements. Collaborative arrangements are considered superior in responding to a crisis, but a comparative assessment of the three modes in the face of a crisis needs to be improved. Further, very little is known about the adaptation of collaborative arrangements that existed before the crisis, as extant research has primarily examined arrangements that emerged in the wake of the crisis. We assess the response of three governance modes to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. A mixed-method approach has been adopted: structured interviews with the domain experts, secondary data, and Twitter analytics framework. Both hierarchy and markets demonstrated adaptability, but market arrangements were mal-adapted to exploit the situation. Contrary to expectations, hierarchy arrangements responded with agility and delivered services substantially. Preexisting collaborative arrangements had limited adaptability due to non-convergence of expectations and reduced dependence, leading partners to choose alternative venues rather than engaging in bargaining and negotiation. The findings contribute to the limited literature on the comparative assessment of modes of governance and adaptability of preexisting collaborative arrangements.

Can convertible bond trading predict stock returns? Evidence from China

This paper studies the information content of convertible bond trading in Chinese market. We construct a measure of the convertible bond order imbalance. The analysis shows that the convertible bond order imbalance positively and significantly predicts future stock returns. The results hold in both daily and 30-min frequencies. Our findings are robust by considering the stock price sensitivity of convertible bond. The predictability is of economic significance that the long-short trading strategy based on the convertible bond order imbalance generates an annual return of 17.54%. Moreover, the predictive relations varies with moneyness, conversion premium, limits to arbitrage, level of information asymmetry and maturity. Since stocks are subject to “T + 1” trading rule while convertible bonds are not in Chinese market, convertible bond market provides an alternative venue to gain stock exposures with less trading restrictions. We find that the stock order imbalance exhibits a weaker predictability on stock returns compared to the convertible bond order flows. Our findings suggest that convertible bond market plays an important role in discovering private information of stock prices.

Alternative Film Screening Venues and Post-Pandemic Sustainability of Indonesian Film Industry

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Indonesia, the Indonesian film industry has experienced stagnation in production and exhibition. Due to their affordability, alternative screening venues can drive the wheels of the Indonesian film industry forward. This paper discusses the potential of these spaces to support the sustainability of the post-pandemic Indonesian film industry.

Identifying Qualified Public Safety Education Venues Using the Dempster–Shafer Theory-Based PROMETHEE Method under Linguistic Environments

How to improve safety awareness is an important topic, and it is of great significance for the public to reduce losses in the face of disasters and crises. A public safety education venue is an important carrier to realize safety education, as it has the characteristics of professionalism, comprehensiveness, experience, interest, participation, and so on, arousing the enthusiasm of the public for learning. As a meaningful supplement to “formal safety education”, venue education has many advantages. However, there are problems in the current venue construction such as imperfect infrastructure, weak professionalism, poor service level, chaotic organizational structure, and low safety, which affect the effect of safety education. To evaluate safety education venues effectively, this study proposes an evidential PROMETHEE method under linguistic environments. The innovation of this study lies in the integration of various linguistic expressions into the Dempster–Shafer theory (DST) framework, realizing the free expression and choice of evaluation information. The results and contributions of this study are summarized as follows. First, a two-tier evaluation index system of public safety education venues including 18 sub-standards is constructed. Secondly, it sets up four levels of quality evaluation for public safety education venues. Third, the belief function is used to represent all kinds of linguistic information, so as to maximize the effect of linguistic information fusion. Fourthly, an evidential PROMETHEE model is proposed to rank the venues. Fifthly, a case study is presented to demonstrate the usage of the proposed method in detail, and the evaluation results are fully analyzed and discussed. The implications of this study are as follows. First of all, to enhance public safety education, people need to face the significance of experiential education venues. Second, experiential education venues can increase learners’ enthusiasm for learning. Thirdly, the evaluation index system provided in this paper can be used to guide the construction of appropriate education venues in cities. Fourthly, the method of linguistic information transformation based on DST is also applicable to other decision-making and evaluation problems. Finally, the evidential PROMETHEE method can not only evaluate the quality of education venues, but also be used to rank a group of alternative venues.

Feasibility Study for Randomised Control Trial for Topical Treatment of Impetigo in Australian General Practice.

Context Impetigo affects millions of children worldwide. Most guidelines recommend antibiotics as first-line treatment however topical antiseptics present a potentially valuable, understudied, antibiotic-sparing treatment for mild impetigo. Objective We aimed to determine the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing efficacy of soft white paraffin (SWP), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and mupirocin for mild impetigo. Study Design The study was designed in keeping with the SPIRIT statement and designed in accordance with the CONSORT statement for pilot RCTs Setting, population studied Consecutive patients presenting with mild impetigo were recruited from two private general practices in North Queensland, Australia. Intervention: Participants were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: soft white paraffin (SWP), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and mupirocin ointment. Outcome measures: Size and number of lesions were measured at the initial consultation and day six. Post-recruitment, interviews with General Practitioners were transcribed and themes identified to determine protocol acceptability, recruitment barriers and avenues to improve delivery. Results Two participants received SWP (n=1) and mupirocin (n=1). Both commenced oral antibiotics following failure of topical treatment. Recruitment barriers included reduced presentation of impetigo due to COVID-19, pre-treatment with existing at-home medications and moderate/severe infection. Childcare centers and pharmacies were identified as alternative venues to improve recruitment rate. Conclusions Valuable insight was gained into the practicality of conducting a RCT of impetigo treatments in general practice. Future trials should consider recruiting outside of general practice clinics to capture patients at earlier, more mild stages of infection. Further investigation into the prevalence and impact of use of at-home expired antibiotics may be beneficial.

Sustainable oxygen evolution electrocatalysis in aqueous 1 M H2SO4 with earth abundant nanostructured Co3O4

Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) able to work in acidic working conditions are elusive. While many first-row transition metal oxides are competitive in alkaline media, most of them just dissolve or become inactive at high proton concentrations where hydrogen evolution is preferred. Only noble-metal catalysts, such as IrO2, are fast and stable enough in acidic media. Herein, we report the excellent activity and long-term stability of Co3O4-based anodes in 1 M H2SO4 (pH 0.1) when processed in a partially hydrophobic carbon-based protecting matrix. These Co3O4@C composites reliably drive O2 evolution a 10 mA cm–2 current density for >40 h without appearance of performance fatigue, successfully passing benchmarking protocols without incorporating noble metals. Our strategy opens an alternative venue towards fast, energy efficient acid-media water oxidation electrodes.

How might we co‐design energy transition policy in old industrial regions?

AbstractThere has been growing interest in collaborative approaches such as co‐creation and co‐design for strategic energy planning and energy policy design. However, existing analyses have conceptualized collaboration in rather vague terms, have focused primarily on the involvement of industrial actors and have been set in Western Europe. In this paper, we assess an inclusive energy transition policy co‐design experiment in Ida‐Virumaa, a region in Estonia historically dominated by the oil shale industry and with scarce experience of cross‐sector collaboration to date. The experiment had a twofold purpose: (1) to establish a network of people interested in renewable energy and energy efficiency in the region, (2) to develop and validate proposals for policies that could accelerate the energy transition. We found that expectation alignment, social learning, resource mobilization and developmental evaluation can be used to create synergy among participants and can lead to innovative policy proposals. However, collaboration increases the time needed for policy development, the existence of alternative venues can undermine the collaborative process, fluid roles can create confusion around implementation and there might not be many resources to build on in old industrial regions. We conclude that it is still relatively easy to co‐design energy policy or a strategic energy plan even in a setting that does not enjoy a well‐developed collaborative culture but it is much more challenging to co‐create a strong network of committed actors with clear roles in the implementation of policies and plans.

Communication of ecosystem services and disservices in local newspapers in Winnipeg, Canada

The global intensification of urbanization is driving a disconnect between humans and nature. Communicating ecosystem services (ES) and disservices (EDS) to city residents offers an opportunity to help reassociate people with ecological processes of the urban forest, benefiting support for urban forest management. It has been theorized that the complexity of ES and EDS may dissuade their coverage by journalists in print media. Further, the complexity of the interrelationship of ES and EDS could represent a challenge for communication. To examine communication of ES and EDS, we conducted a literature review of newspaper articles published in two prominent newspapers in Winnipeg, Manitoba between January 2010 and May 2021. During the study period, 114 urban forestry articles mentioned ES and/or EDS. Cultural services were the most frequently discussed, followed by regulating services. Provisioning services were discussed least which may reflect their reduced importance in urban forestry discourse/management. Twenty-three articles mentioned EDS, only eight of which also mentioned ES. Only six articles referenced the related ES to the EDS, all of which were in articles focused on tree planting. Despite the complexity of many ES discussed in the articles, the interrelatedness of some ES and EDS were not well described. Counter to previous newspaper reviews, we found that ES were discussed more than EDS. However, the communication of EDS remains an important component of urban forest discourse. While navigating communication on the intersection of ES and EDS may prove challenging in print journalism, we argue restructuring EDS communication such that it is framed in ES discourse could mitigate public concerns surrounding urban forestry, while creating equitable coverage of urban forest affairs. We identify the need for further research on the impact of social media and television as alternative venues for urban forestry discourse.

Outcome of Did Not Attend Outpatient Appointment

AimsFailure to attend outpatient clinic appointments by service users without prior notification is a major contributor to waste resources. Failure to attend earlier in treatment predicts attrition later in treatment (Goode, 1997; Aubrey et al, 2003) leading to further waste of resources. The department of health figures for England show that failure to attend outpatient clinic is more in mental health clinics (19.1%) compared with overall figures for other specialties 11.7% (Department of Health, 2003). Lack of appropriate follow-up when a service user does not attend as appointment has been identified as a contributory factor in Serious Incident investigations, Domestic Homicide Reviews and Safeguarding Adults Reviews. LGBTQ activism in repressive contexts: the struggle for (in)visibility in Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey

ABSTRACT Drawing on social movements and gender studies, the article aims at exploring repertoires of action articulated by LGBTQ communities in Egypt, Tunisia, and Turkey during and after the 2011 and 2013 protests. The aim is to disentangle how LGBTQ individuals mobilized in the MENA region and which role civil society organizations and digital technologies played in the development of such mobilizations. State repression on mobilizing structures, the relevance of digital networks in mobilization strategies, involving LGBTQ activists and individuals in the three countries, will be discussed. The empirical analysis draws on 44 semi-structured interviews carried out in Egypt, Tunisia, and Turkey between 2011 and 2020 focusing on repressive contexts, civil society activism, and digital networks. By doing so, the analysis aims also to shed light on the roles played by both meso-level organizations and digital technologies in triggering a range of diverse repertoires of action. If in the three countries LGBTQ communities have been disproportionally targeted by state and non-state repressive campaigns, in Egypt LGBTQ activists challenged repression thanks to the use of social networks as alternative venues for socialization, while in Tunisia and Turkey, LGBTQ activists, drawing upon more established meso-level mobilizing structures, built-up new strategies with the aim to increase their cooperation with other political challengers.

Comparable Quality Performance of Acute Low-Back Pain Care in Telemedicine and Office-Based Cohorts.

Introduction: Back pain is among the most common presentations in primary care offices. National organizations have standardized the appropriate use of imaging for acute low-back pain (LBP). The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of imaging in LBP between telemedicine and in-person clinical encounters. Methods: This retrospective cohort compared secondary data from 20,624 telemedicine and office encounters in a large nonprofit health system from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2021. The proportion of patients aged 18-50 years who did not receive imaging for acute LBP (X-ray, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging) within 28 days of the provider encounter was measured according to Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set specifications. Performance was compared across race, ethnicity, age, body mass index, overall risk score, and insurance type. Chi-squared tests determined significant differences between cohorts (p < 0.05). Results: Patients seen via telemedicine had significantly lower rates of imaging within 28 days of their physician encounter (office: 16.32%, telemedicine: 11.20%; difference: 5.12%; p < 0.01). This was consistent across racial, ethnic, and risk score subgroups. Discussion: For practices and health systems, telemedicine might be a higher value approach for initial evaluation of acute LBP in primary care. For policy makers, telemedicine can save on health care costs without negatively impacting quality performance measures. Conclusions: Telemedicine is unlikely to compromise quality of acute LBP care, supporting this virtual space as an alternative care venue. The most beneficial use of telemedicine might be triaging initial encounters of acute LBP in primary care. Stronger evidence could support its long-term potential for driving value through cost savings.

Urban alternative cultural production in Turin: An ecological community approach

From the ashes of the creative city paradigm, there is a growing awareness of the urban creative economy as an adaptive complex system of intertwined actors and institutions. Yet, especially in the European context, little attention has been given to understanding informal and alternative art spaces and venues that contribute to the vibrancy of the urban cultural scene. Drawing on the emerging creative and cultural ecology literature, the article proposes a conceptual and empirical framework to analyze alternative cultural production as an ecological community. After providing a conceptualization of distinct types of alternative cultural organizations, we investigate the economic, spatial, and relational structure of more than 50 art spaces in Turin, Italy, an industrial city that has experienced a radical urban transformation based on culture-led development strategies. Using both a quantitative and qualitative approach, our findings unveil a distinction between centers pursuing artistic specialization and those more oriented toward aggregating diversified cultural activities. The two types of organizations coexist within the community, but the difference in their mission and operation influences the organizational structure, the involvement in neighborhood revitalization, and features of the local network of collaborations. From a spatial perspective, while the centers tend to cluster in the main peripheral areas of social and urban transformation, the analysis points out possible different locational choices and spatial dynamics for the two types of organizations in distinct areas of commercial and real-estate-led transformation.
