Inhibitory Control in Age-Related Hearing Loss

Inhibitory control involves suppression of goal irrelevant information and responses. Emerging evidence suggests alterations in inhibitory control in individuals with age-related hearing loss (ARHL), however, few have specifically studied individuals with mild ARHL. We examined behavioral and event related potential (ERP) differences between 14 older adults with mild ARHL (mean age: 69.43 ± 7.73 years) and 14 age- and education-matched normal hearing (NH, mean age: 66.57 ± 5.70 years) controls on two Go/NoGo tasks: a simpler, basic categorization task (Single Car; SC) and a more difficult, superordinate categorization task (Object Animal; OA). The SC task consisted of exemplars of a single car and dog, and the OA task consisted of exemplars of multiple objects and animals. Participants were required to respond to Go trials (e.g., cars in SC) with a button press, and withhold responses on NoGo trials (e.g., dogs in SC task). Behavioral results revealed that ARHL group had worse accuracy on NoGo trials on the OA task, but not on the SC task. ARHL group had longer N2 latency for NoGo compared to Go trials in the simpler SC Task, but no differences were observed on the OA task between Go and NoGo trials. These findings suggest that more prolonged neural effort in the ARHL group on the SC task NoGo trials may have contributed to their ability to successfully suppress false alarms comparable to the NH group. Overall, these findings provide evidence for behavioral and neural changes in inhibitory control in ARHL.

Confirmation of age-related alterations in inhibitory control using a modified minimally delayed oculomotor response (MDOR) task.

Considerable effort has been made to measure and understand the effects of ageing on inhibitory control using a range of behavioural tasks. In the minimally delayed oculomotor response (MDOR) task, participants are presented with a simple visual target step with variable target display duration (TDD), and instructed to saccade to the target not when it appears (a prosaccade response), but when it disappears (i.e., on target offset). Using this task, we recently found higher error rates and longer latencies for correct responses in older compared to younger participants. Here we have used a modified MDOR task, in which participants were presented with static placeholders identifying potential target positions (increasing spatial information), and three TDDs rather than two (reducing temporal predictability). We found that the yield of analysable trials was generally higher with this modified task and in 28 older (mean ± SD age: 65 ± 7 y) and 25 younger (26 ± 7 y) participants the total overall error rate was again higher in the older group (30 ± 18% vs. 16 ± 11%). An analysis of the temporal distribution of responses demonstrated a pronounced peak in error production around 150 ms (young) or 200 ms (old) after target onset. When we recalculated the error rate focusing on these errors, it was again significantly higher in the older group. The latency of correct responses (to offsets) was significantly increased in the older group, although much of this increase was accounted for by expected age-related visuomotor slowing. However, both latency and distribution data suggested that while older participants could generate increased levels of inhibition, they could not maintain these levels as efficiently as the younger participants. In 24 participants (15 old, 9 young) who completed both versions of the MDOR task, neither latency nor error rates differed significantly between versions. These results confirm an inhibitory control deficit in healthy older participants, and suggest that the dynamics of inhibitory control are also affected by ageing. The modified MDOR task yields more data while not altering basic performance parameters.

Effect of Mindfulness Training on Inhibitory Control in Young Offenders

Violent and criminal behaviors have increased in recent years in many countries, with the younger population constituting one of the main actors involved in this phenomenon. It has been hypothesized that alterations in inhibitory control play a crucial role in the appearance and persistence of such behaviors. Mindfulness meditation promotes detailed observation of sensations, emotions, and thoughts that involve cognitive processes and brain circuits closely related to inhibitory control. To determine the effect of mindfulness meditation on inhibitory control in young offenders. A total of 40 young male offenders (16–23 years) were recruited from a juvenile correctional facility, all of whom had committed violent crimes before the age of 18. The youths were divided into two groups of 20 participants each: treatment and control. A Stroop task and two Stop-signal tasks, one with happy, fearful, angry, and neutral facial stimuli, were performed before and after a 10-week mindfulness meditation training program. Compared to controls, the young offenders who participated in mindfulness training improved their inhibitory control after treatment, as reflected in an increase in their reaction times on the Stop-signal task (F(1,36) = 12.87, p = .031, η2 = .261), and a decrease in the number of errors on the Stroop task (F(1,36) = 4.684, p = .037, η2 = .115). Mindfulness meditation training improved inhibitory control and, therefore, may have a positive effect on mitigating violent behavior in young offenders.

Age-related alterations in inhibitory control investigated using the minimally delayed oculomotor response task.

Healthy, older adults are widely reported to experience cognitive decline, including impairments in inhibitory control. However, this general proposition has recently come under scrutiny because ageing effects are highly variable between individuals, are task dependent, and are sometimes not distinguished from general age-related slowing. We recently developed the minimally delayed oculomotor response (MDOR) task in which participants are presented with a simple visual target step, and instructed to saccade not to the target when it appears (a prosaccade response), but when it disappears (i.e. on target offset). Varying the target display duration (TDD) prevents offset timing being predictable from the time of target onset, and saccades prior to the offset are counted as errors. A comparison of MDOR task performance in a group of 22 older adults (mean age 62 years, range 50–72 years) with that in a group of 39 younger adults (22 years, range 19–27 years) demonstrated that MDOR latency was significantly increased in the older group by 34–68 ms depending on TDD. However, when MDOR latencies were corrected by subtracting the latency observed in a standard prosaccade task, the latency difference between groups was abolished. There was a larger latency modulation with TDD in the older group which was observed even when their generally longer latencies were taken into account. Error rates were significantly increased in the older group. An analysis of the timing distribution of errors demonstrated that most errors were failures to inhibit responses to target onsets. When error distributions were used to isolate clear inhibition failures from other types of error, the older group still exhibited significantly higher error rates as well as a higher residual error rate. Although MDOR latency in older participants may largely reflect a general slowing in the oculomotor system with age, both the latency modulation and error rate results are consistent with an age-related inhibitory control deficit. How this relates to performance on other inhibitory control tasks remains to be investigated.

Double jeopardy: Comorbid obesity and cigarette smoking are linked to neurobiological alterations in inhibitory control during smoking cue exposure

Obesity and cigarette smoking are two of the leading preventable causes of death in the United States. Research suggests that overlapping pathophysiology may contribute to obesity and nicotine use disorder (NUD), yet no studies have investigated the effect of obesity on neural response to reward stimuli in NUD. This study used arterial spin-labeled perfusion functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine neural responses during exposure to smoking versus nonsmoking cues in 79 treatment-seeking participants with NUD, 26 with normal weight, 28 with overweight, and 25 with obesity. Given that deficits in behavioral inhibitory control have been associated with both obesity and NUD, participants completed an affect-congruent Go/NoGo task to assess the effect of body mass index (BMI) on this construct in NUD. Analyses revealed that BMI was negatively associated with activation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) in response to smoking cues, with significantly reduced response in smokers with overweight and smokers with obesity compared with normal-weight smokers. In addition, greater commission errors on the Go/NoGo task were correlated with reduced neural response to smoking cues in the right dlPFC only among those with obesity. Together, these findings provide evidence that obesity in treatment-seeking NUDs is related to neurobiological alterations in inhibitory control over cue-potentiated behaviors, suggesting that smoking cessation may be more difficult in individuals with comorbid NUD and obesity than in those without, requiring treatment strategies tailored to meet their unique needs.

State-dependent alterations in inhibitory control and emotional face identification in seasonal affective disorder.

Depressed individuals often exhibit impaired inhibition to negative input and identification of positive stimuli, but it is unclear whether this is a state or trait feature. We here exploited a naturalistic model, namely individuals with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), to study this feature longitudinally. The goal of this study was to examine seasonal changes in inhibitory control and identification of emotional faces in individuals with SAD. Twenty-nine individuals diagnosed with winter-SAD and 30 demographically matched controls with no seasonality symptoms completed an emotional Go/NoGo task, requiring inhibition of prepotent responses to emotional facial expressions and an emotional face identification task twice, in winter and summer. In winter, individuals with SAD showed impaired ability to inhibit responses to angry (p = .0006) and sad faces (p = .011), and decreased identification of happy faces (p = .032) compared with controls. In summer, individuals with SAD and controls performed similarly on these tasks (ps > .24). We provide novel evidence that inhibition of angry and sad faces and identification of happy faces are impaired in SAD in the symptomatic phase, but not in the remitted phase. The affective biases in cognitive processing constitute state-dependent features of SAD. Our data show that reinstatement of a normal affective cognition should be possible and would constitute a major goal in psychiatric treatment to improve the quality of life for these patients.
