Quantifying occurrence of deformation bands in sandstone as a function of structural and petrophysical factors and their impact on reservoir quality: an example from outcrop analog of Productive Series (Pliocene), South Caspian Basin

Deformation bands (DB) are known to influence porosity and permeability in sandstones. This study aims to predict the occurrence of DB and to quantify their impact on reservoir properties based on field measurements in the steeply dipping limb of a kilometer-scale fold in Yasamal Valley, western South Caspian Basin. An integrated approach of characterizing bands and their effect on reservoir properties included measurements of natural gamma radioactivity and permeability using portable tools, along with bed dip and the count of DB across distinct facies. A set of core analyses was performed on outcrop plugs with and without bands to estimate the alteration of rock properties at the pore scale. Interpretation of outcrop gamma-ray data indicates the absence of bands in Balakhany sandstones containing shale volume greater than 18% for unconsolidated and 32% for calcite-rich facies. A high amount of calcite cement appears to increase the number of DB. A poor, positive trend between bed dip and DB concentration was identified. We show that net to gross, defined as the thickness fraction of sandstone bound by mudstones, is among the parameters controlling the occurrence of bands. Samples containing a single DB show a 33% and 3% decrease in permeability and porosity, respectively, relative to the host rock. We reveal a new set of lithological and petrophysical factors influencing DB occurrence. This study offers a direct tool that can be applied in subsurface reservoir analogs to predict the occurrence and concentration of DB and estimate their influence on rock properties.

Effect of CO2-brine-rock reactions on pore architecture and permeability in dolostone: Implications for CO2 storage and EOR

Geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) is considered a feasible technology for storing substantive volumes of greenhouse gases in subsurface geological formations. In the reservoir, far from carbon dioxide (CO2) injection wells or in post-injection scenarios, diffusion dominates over advection. This condition conjoins with spatially distributed geochemical reactions to induce heterogeneous changes in pore architecture, i.e. pore body and throat sizes or surface roughness. These changes can affect CO2 transport properties and storage capacity. In this work, we investigated mineral dissolution and precipitation in dolomite samples saturated with a CO2-saturated brine at 93 °C and 34.5 MPa, aged without flow. Two rock types samples, i.e. intergranular- and vuggy-dominant, were selected to investigate changes in pore size, porosity and permeability under reactive conditions. Mineral dissolution and precipitation were characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Changes in pore size were quantified via time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR) transverse relaxation time (T2) and diffusion coefficient (D) distributions. We show that mineral dissolution likely occurs in highly permeable pathways. These observations are confirmed through analysis of (T2) and diffusion coefficient (D) distributions. In contrast to results during CO2-enriched brine continuous injection, mineral precipitation was observed in micropores. The leftward shift of the T2 peaks, corresponding to micropores, also evidenced mineral precipitation in low-permeability zones. However, microscale alterations resulted only in a subtle increase in porosity and permeability. Results in this study shed light on effects of geochemical reactions on alteration of rock properties in diffusion-dominated regions during CO2 storage.

Patterns in the transformation of the composition and properties of volcanogenic rocks in hydrothermal-magmatic systems of the Kuril-Kamchatka island arc

Hydrothermal-magmatic systems of the Kuril-Kamchatka island arc were formed in Neogene-Quaternary volcanic rocks. Acting on host rocks, thermal waters induced their alteration and transformation into hydrothermal-metasomatic rocks, such as propylites, secondary quartzites, zeolitic rocks, argillic rocks, opalites, quartz-adularia metasomatites, etc. The dynamics of changes in rock properties during the hydrothermal process depends on a number of factors, including the features of primary rocks, temperature, pressure and composition of thermal fluids, fluid phase, fluid pH, and duration of fluid-rock interaction. Deep high-temperature fluids cause consolidation and hardening of the rocks, an increase in deformational properties, and a decrease in porosity and permeability, regardless of fluid composition. The chemical composition and acidity-alkalinity of thermal fluids have a significant influence on the alteration of rock properties during low-temperature hydrothermal processes.

Thermal Alteration of Sandstones

Abstract With the advent o underground heating operations, interest has developed in the alteration of rock properties by high-temperature treatment. In the present work a number of sandstones were heated to temperatures in the range of 400 to 800C under both atmospheric and simulated reservoir pressures. Permeabilities increased by at least 50 per cent and sonic velocities and breaking strengths decreased by an equivalent amount. Differential thermal expansion and other reactions of constituent mineral grains are the causes of these alterations. Introduction In the underground combustion of petroleum reservoirs. Temperatures of the order of 600C are reported to have been reached in the combustion zone. At this temperature rocks are subject to extensive thermal alteration. Temperatures of this magnitude and higher may also occur in subsurface formations when subjected to bottom-hole heating, thermal drilling operations, and underground nuclear explosions. Temperatures of this magnitude might also be generated by conventional rock drilling methods at points of bit-tooth contact. In earlier work, the permanent deformation of rocks resulting from heating was reported. Major structural damage of rocks occurs due to differential thermal expansion of mineral constituents. A number of mineral alterations including crystal versions, loss of water of crystallization and dissociation, may also contribute to changes in physical structure and properties of rock. In the present work, samples of three typical sandstones were had to several temperatures up to a maximum of 800C and then allowed to cool to room temperature. Heating was done under both atmospheric pressure and simulated reservoir pressure conditions. Physical properties of the samples were measured before and after healing and comparisons made. Measured properties included permeability, sonic velocity, breaking strength and fracture index. Changes in physical properties were compared to changes in mineralogical characteristics as determined by thin-section. X-ray diffraction and chemical tests. EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE Two outcrop sandstones (Bandera and Berea) and one sub-surface sandstone (St. Peter) were selected for the tests. These samples have a wide range in composition and physical properties as shown in Table 1.The first series of tests was made on 2-in. diameter by 5-in. long test specimens. Test specimens used in all later work were 3/4-in. diameter by 1 1/8-in. long. this being the specimen size required for heating at simulated reservoir pressures. After careful washing, the cores were oven dried at 100 +/- 5C for a minimum of 24 hours before the tests were run. Test specimens were heated in an electric furnace at a constant rate of temperature increase of 3C per minute. When maximum temperature of the run was reached, the sample was allowed to soak for one hour. The furnace was then cooled to room temperature at the same rate of 3C per minute. The entire heating operation was designed for reproducibility without subjecting the test specimens to excessive thermal shock. For samples heated under simulated reservoir pressures. a pressure cell designed by Dean was used (Fig. 1). The core sample was inserted into a thin-walled (0.006 to 0.01-in.) copper cup which was then mounted in a high- pressure cell. Provisions were made for the application of internal pore pressure as well as confining pressure. Tests showed that the thin-walled copper cup closed tightly around the core and satisfactorily transmitted confining pressure to the core. The core was heated by placing the entire cell into the electric furnace. The heating program was the same as that used in the atmospheric pressure runs: temperature rise of 3C per minute to maximum temperature of the test, soaking at maximum temperature for one hour. and cooling at a rate of approximately 3C per minute. The cell was designed to withstand 5,000 psi at 1,000C. However, since it was considered likely that repeated heating and cooling would in time weaken the steel, 2,000 psi at 850C was set as a working limit. In the present series of tests, the pore pressure was held constant at 750 psi and the confining pressure at 1,500 psi. The pressure source was a high-pressure nitrogen tank. The two pressures were controlled manually but are accurate well within +/- 50 psi. JPT P. 589ˆ

The Alteration of Rock Properties by Percussion Sidewall Coring

Introduction The use of percussion-type sidewall cores as an aid in detection and evaluation of hydrocarbon shows and in examination of rock properties has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sidewall coring has an advantage over normal bottom-hole coring methods in that the zones may be surveyed with the electric log prior to selection of sample depths. This allows an efficient sampling of all zones of interest, a procedure not possible with bottom-hole coring techniques unless the costly procedure of continuous coring is utilized. Percussion sidewall coring presently provides the most rapid and lowest cost method of obtaining sidewall cores. It has been recognized for some time that certain discrepancies exist between core analysis data obtained from percussion cores and data obtained from other types of core samples. This paper presents existing field and laboratory data that were available to the authors. Several examples of comparative core analysis data obtained from various fields are presented along with photomicrographs of thin sections of conventional and percussion cores. The results of this investigation are presented to throw more light on the possible disturbed condition of percussion sidewall cores. Sample Disturbance and Fracturing The principal cause of discrepancy between conventional core analysis data and percussion sidewall core analysis data is believed to be the shattering and re-adjustment of the grains due to the large impact shearing forces produced by mechanics of percussion coring. Figs. 1 through 5 are photomicrographs of thin section slides of formation samples obtained by means of diamond cores, conventional cores, and percussion sidewall cores.
