Impact of allergic rhinitis on stomatitis in Korean adolescents

Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether adolescents with allergic rhinitis are at an increased risk of stomatitis and to ascertain possible sex-specific differences. Methods: The data for this cross-sectional study was obtained from the 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2022). Of the 56,213 students surveyed, 51,850 (boys 26,397 and girls 25,453) were included in the final analyses. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify the impact of allergic rhinitis on the risk of stomatitis among Korean adolescents. Results: In Model II, which was adjusted for allergic disease, boys with allergic rhinitis had a 1.53-fold (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=1.53, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.40–1.67), and girls had a 1.35-fold (aOR=1.35, CI=1.25–1.46) elevated risk of stomatitis than in those without. In Model III, after adjusting for all covariates, boys with allergic rhinitis had a 1.48-fold (aOR=1.48, CI=1.36–1.62) elevated risk of stomatitis than in those without, and girls had a 1.32-fold (aOR=1.32, CI=1.22–1.43) elevated risk, which remained statistically significant after adjusting for covariates. Therefore, allergic rhinitis in adolescents exerts a detrimental effect on the risk of experiencing stomatitis symptoms; the risk was higher in boys than in girls. Conclusions: These findings suggest that oral health care attention and intervention are needed for adolescents with allergic rhinitis.

The Relationship between House Type and Truck Traffic with Allergic Rhinitis in Adolescents

Introduction: Although many studies have been conducted on allergic diseases, their risk factors including allergic rhinitis have not yet been fully understood. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between house type, floor, and frequency of truck traffic on the street of residences with allergic rhinitis in adolescents in Yazd.
 Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 5141 adolescents aged 13-14 years, from February 2020 to June 2020, using the large-scale Global Asthma Network (GAN) survey data in Yazd. The data were collected electronically using the GAN standard questionnaire, and analyzed in SPSS software version 23 using descriptive and analytical statistics (Chi-square and logistic regression). The value of P < 0.05 was considered significant.
 Results: In this study, 11.2% of boys and 13.3% of girls had allergic rhinitis, indicating a significant difference by gender (P = 0.025). The prevalence of allergic rhinitis did not differ significantly according to the type of house (apartment or detached house with a yard) and the floor (P > 0.05). However, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis showed a significant correlation with the frequency of truck traffic on the street of residence (P = 0.001). If the truck passed through the street near the house almost all day, the chance of developing allergic rhinitis would be 2.4 times higher.
 Conclusion: The risk of allergic rhinitis increases with the frequent truck traffic from the street near the house, but the type of house and floor do not have a significant effect.

Prevalence of rhinitis and associated factors in adolescents and adults: a Global Asthma Network study.

To determine the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and associated factors in adolescents and in their parents/guardians. A cross-sectional study, applying a standardized and validated written questionnaire. Adolescents (13-14 years old; n=1,058) and their parents/guardians (mean age=42.1 years old; n=896) living in the city of Uruguaiana, southern Brazil, responded to the Global Asthma Network standard questionnaires. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in adolescents was 28.0%, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, 21.3%, and severe forms of allergic rhinitis, 7.8%. In the adults, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 31.7%. Some associated factors with allergic rhinitis in adolescents include low physical exercise (OR 2.16; 95%CI 1.15-4.05), having only one older sibling (OR 1.94; 95CI 1.01-3.72) and daily meat consumption (OR 7.43; 95% CI 1.53-36.11). In contrast, consuming sugar (OR 0.34; 95%CI 0.12-0.93) or olive oil (OR 0.33; 95%CI 0.13-0 .81) once or twice a week, and eating vegetables daily (OR 0.39; 95%CI 0.15-0.99) were considered factors negatively associated. In adults, exposure to fungi at home (OR 5.25; 95%CI 1.01-27.22) and consumption of meat once or twice a week (OR 46.45; 95CI 2.12-1020.71) were factors associated with the medical diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, while low education (OR 0.25; 95%CI 0.07-0.92) was found to be a factor negatively associated. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in adolescents is high, as well as its medical diagnosis in adults living in Uruguaiana. Environmental factors, especially food habits, were associated with findings in both groups.

Background. Allergic rhinitis is caused by grass pollen is a common problem in the world. The symptoms of this disease can varied on the age of the patient. 
 Aim: to identify the etiology and analyze the clinic of allergic rhinitis in adolescents. 
 Methods. An allergic examination was carried out in 96 patients with allergic rhinitis signs who were treated at MEGI MC, which included the study of an allergic history and setting of scarification tests, determination of IgE, comparison of clinical manifestations and detection of sensitization to pollen of various plants in adolescents with allergic rhinitis. 
 Results. The prevailing share of girls was 65.4%. The etiological factors were tree pollen in 28.6% of cases (in 27 patients), weeds — 12.4% (12 people), meadow grasses — 10.6% (10 people), meadow and weeds — 8.3 % (8 people), a combination of trees, meadow and weeds — 6.4% (6 people) and trees and meadow grasses — 4.7% (4 people). 
 Conclusion. Typical clinical manifestations consist of light and middle rhinitis — 71 people (94%), conjunctivitis — 45 people (58.8%), rhinosinusitis — 22 people (28.6%), bronchial asthma — 10 people (10.4%).

Background: Allergic rhinitis, the most common form of chronic rhinitis, can adversely affect quality of life. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in adolescents in South Africa has been estimated to be 38.5%, but there is a paucity of data from African countries on allergic rhinitis.Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in medical students in the Faculty of Health Science at the University of the Free State (UFS). Information was acquired on the effects that the condition had on participants with regard to symptoms, quality of life, disease management and treatment.Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire was distributed to all medical students registered with the Faculty of Health Sciences at UFS in 2016. The estimated population was 706 students.Results: The response rate was 62.6%. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 39.1%. The most common symptoms were rhinorrhoea (64.8%), repeated sneezing (64.3%) and nasal obstruction (58.5%). Symptoms were at their worst during August to October. Antihistamines had been used by 82.4% of participants to treat their symptoms in the previous 12 months, while 28.8% had used an intranasal steroid spray.Conclusion: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in medical students at UFS was 39.1%. Rhinorrhoea, sneezing and nasal obstruction were the most frequent and bothersome symptoms.

Is orienteering associated with allergic rhinitis in adolescents?

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a disease that reduces athletic performance. Environmental allergen exposure is higher in outdoor sports (such as orienteering) than indoor sports. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the AR frequency in orienteers comparing with indoor athletes. Sixty adolescent athletes (33 orienteers, 27 basketball players) enrolled this prospective study. AR diagnosis was made by both history (ISAAC questionnaire) and physical examination. Nasal endoscopy was performed to observe objective findings (concha hypertrophy, mucosal paleness, serosity, septum deviation, adenoid hypertrophy). Epidermal prick test, pulmonary function test, total IgE and serum eosinophil levels were also assessed. AR was diagnosed in 21 (35%) athletes. 14 (42.4%) were orienteers and 7 (25.9%) were basketball players (P=0.144). Endoscopic findings and skin test positivity were also seen at higher percentages in orienteers with no significance. Training age (sport duration), total IgE levels and skin test positivity were significantly higher in rhinitic orieenters than non-rhinitic orieenters (P=0.046, P=0.0001, and P=0.004, respectively). Although adolescent orieenters had some higher allergic parameters than indoor athletes, they were not found more susceptible to AR. It seems that the frequency of AR increases with longer training age in orieentering sport. This study is the first report about AR in adolescent orienteers. Future researchs should more focus on comparing allergic conditions between outdoor and indoor sports.

Effect of Antibiotic Use and Mold Exposure in Infancy on Allergic Rhinitis in Susceptible Adolescents

To explore the risk of allergic rhinitis (AR) in adolescents with the independent and combined effect of antibiotic use and mold exposure in infancy.The study population consisted of 7389 students recruited from 8 middle schools in Seoul, Korea.The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood written questionnaire was obtained from 7389 adolescents. Interleukin 13 (IL-13) (rs20541) and toll-like receptor 4 (rs1927911) polymorphisms were performed on TaqMan genotyping in 1395 randomly selected adolescents.Of the total 7286 completed surveys, almost one-third used antibiotics, and 10.3% were exposed to mold in infancy. The data showed age, parental history of AR, antibiotic use in infancy, and pet ownership during pregnancy or infancy were linked with an increased risk of current AR. The presence of an older sibling was noted to have a protective effect. Increased odds ratio for current AR was seen with combined antibiotic use and mold exposure in infancy. Antibiotic use had an adjusted odds ratio of 1.25, whereas mold exposure had an adjusted odds ratio of 0.99 when considered independently. Patients also had increased risk of current AR with IL-13 (rs20541) GA or AA genotype and CT + TT genotype of toll-like receptor 4 (rs1927911).In genetically susceptible adolescents, with specific IL-13 polymorphisms, antibiotic use and mold exposure in infancy have additive effects on the risk of current AR.Certain genetic polymorphisms may increase the risk of different types of atopic disease. Studies such as this aim to identify future risk factors of development of atopy. AR is a common diagnosis in childhood. Unfortunately, as is often noted, AR appears to be a multifactorial condition and, as such, is difficult to isolate single or even combined risk factors. Although recall bias is a potential limitation of the study, the information collected appears important. Limitation of mold exposure and judicious use of antibiotics in children appear to be even more important than previously thought, to prevent the development of allergic rhinitis in some adolescents later in life.

Risk of bipolar disorder among adolescents with allergic rhinitis: A nationwide longitudinal study

BackgroundPrevious studies have suggested an immunological dysfunction in bipolar disorder, but none has investigated the temporal association between allergic rhinitis (AR) and bipolar disorder. MethodsUsing Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 9506 adolescents aged 12–18years with allergic rhinitis were enrolled between 2000 and 2008 and compared to 38,024 age-and gender-matched (1:4) control groups. Subjects of bipolar disorder that occurred up to the end of follow-up (December 31, 2011) were identified. ResultsAdolescents with AR had a significantly higher incidence of developing bipolar disorder (0.77 vs. 0.18 per 1000 person-years, p<0.001) during the follow-up period than the controls. Adolescents with AR had an increased risk (hazard ratio [HR]: 4.62, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.17–6.75) of developing bipolar disorder in their later life compared to the control group after adjusting for demographic data and comorbid allergic diseases. DiscussionThis is the first study showing a temporal association between AR and bipolar disorder, in that patients who had AR in adolescence exhibited an increased risk of developing bipolar disorder in later life. Further study would be required to investigate the underlying mechanism about this association.

Early childhood IgE reactivity to pathogenesis-related class 10 proteins predicts allergic rhinitis in adolescence

Component-resolved diagnosis might improve the prediction of future allergy in young children. We sought to investigate the association between IgE reactivity to the pathogenesis-related class 10 (PR-10) protein family and allergic rhinitis to birch pollen (ARbp) from early childhood up to age 16 years. Questionnaire data and sera obtained at 4, 8, and 16 years of age from the Barn/Children Allergi/Allergy Milieu Stockholm Epidemiologic (BAMSE) study birth cohort were used. Sera from 764 children were analyzed for IgE reactivity to 9 PR-10 allergen proteins at the 3 time points by using an allergen chip based on ISAC technology. ARbp was defined as upper airway symptoms during birch pollen exposure. IgE reactivity to Bet v 1 was found in 12%, 17%, and 25% of children at 4, 8, and 16 years of age. IgE reactivity of PR-10 proteins showed a hierarchic intrarelationship: Bet v 1 > Mal d 1 > Cor a 1.04 > Ara h 8 > Pru p 1 > Aln g 1 > Api g 1 > Act d 8 > Gly m 4. There was an increased risk of incidence and persistence of ARbp up to age 16 years with increasing levels of Bet v 1-specific IgE or increasing numbers of IgE-reactive PR-10 proteins at 4 years. Children with severe ARbp at age 16 years had higher levels of Bet v 1-specific IgE at age 4 years compared with children with mild symptoms. ARbp at age 16 years can be predicted by analysis of IgE reactivity to PR-10 proteins in early childhood.

Efficacy, safety, and optimal dose selection of beclomethasone dipropionate nasal aerosol for seasonal allergic rhinitis in adolescents and adults

Objective:Some patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) may prefer nonaqueous intranasal corticosteroid aerosols because of unwanted attributes of aqueous formulations. The mandatory removal of chlorofluorocarbon-propelled nonaqueous aerosols from the market limited available treatment options. To fulfill this unmet need, a nonaqueous, hydrofluoroalkane-propelled beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) nasal aerosol was developed and approved for treatment of AR nasal symptoms. As part of the development program, this dose-ranging study evaluated three doses of BDP nasal aerosol to determine the optimally safe and effective dose for adolescent and adult patients (≥12 years old) with seasonal AR (SAR).Methods:After a 7 to 21 day placebo run-in period, eligible patients with SAR were randomly assigned to once-daily BDP nasal aerosol 80 µg, 160 µg, 320 µg, or placebo. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline in average a.m. and p.m. patient-reported reflective total nasal symptom scores (rTNSS) over 2 weeks. Safety and tolerability were also assessed. A potential study limitation could be lack of objective assessment of AR symptoms.Results:Significant improvements were seen in average a.m. and p.m. rTNSS (least squares [LS] mean treatment difference, −0.63; 95% CI: −1.13, −0.13; p = 0.013) as well as in average a.m. and p.m. instantaneous TNSS (iTNSS; LS mean treatment difference, −0.60; 95% CI: −1.09, −0.11; p = 0.016) with BDP nasal aerosol 320 µg/day compared with placebo. Although there were numerical improvements from baseline in patient-reported rTNSS and iTNSS with BDP nasal aerosol 80 µg and 160 µg, these doses did not achieve statistical significance compared with placebo. BDP nonaqueous nasal aerosol was well tolerated at all doses tested, with a safety profile comparable to that of placebo.Conclusions:These data indicate that 320 µg/day of BDP nasal aerosol is the optimally safe and effective dose for the treatment of SAR in adolescent and adult patients.Trial registration NCT:#NCT00854360.

Allergic rhinitis in adolescence increases the risk of depression in later life: A nationwide population-based prospective cohort study

Background: Many cross-sectional studies have suggested an association between allergic rhinitis (AR) and depression, but the timing relationship was not determined. Using a nationwide population-based prospective cohort study (1:4, age-/gender-matched), we hypothesized that AR in adolescence would increase the risk of depression in later life. MethodsIn all, 1673 adolescents aged 12–15 that had AR between 1996 and 2000 were recruited for our study. Cases of major depressive disorder and any depressive disorder that occurred to the end of follow-up (December 31, 2010) were identified. ResultAdolescents with AR had a higher prevalence of major depression (2.5% vs. 1.2%, p<0.001) and any depressive disorder (4.9% vs. 2.8%, p<0.001) and an earlier onset of major depression (19.31±2.91 vs. 20.43±2.71 years, p=0.038) and any depressive disorder (19.35±2.63 vs. 20.43±2.62 years, p=0.002) compared with the controls. The Cox regression model showed that adolescents with AR had increased HRs of major depression (HR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.02–2.50) and any depressive disorder (HR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.04–1.93) after controlling residence location and comorbid allergic diseases. LimitationsThe prevalence of depressive disorder may be underestimated because only those who had medicine-seeking behaviors were enrolled. ConclusionsThis first cohort case–control study showed an association between AR in early adolescence and depression in late adolescence and early adulthood. Our results suggested that allergic responses played important roles in the development of depression.

Prediction of the incidence and persistence of allergic rhinitis in adolescence: A prospective cohort study

Predictive models have rarely been used in allergy research and practice. However, they might support physicians in advising patients. The aim of this study was to create predictive models for the incidence and persistence of allergic rhinitis (AR) during adolescence. A prospective population-based cohort study was conducted starting at age 9 to 11 years. Potential risk factors for atopic diseases obtained at baseline in 2810 subjects were used to create predictive logistic regression models for the incidence and persistence of physician-diagnosed AR with current symptoms at age 15 to 18 years. Positive skin prick test responses to outdoor allergens at baseline were the most important determinant for both the incidence and persistence of AR until follow-up. For the incidence of AR, positive skin prick test responses to indoor allergens, parental history of asthma, female sex, and not having been breast-fed exclusively for 2 or more months were additional statistically significant independent risk factors. Depending on the number of risk factors present, the probability of the incidence of AR increased from 2% (no risk factors present) to 72% (full model; 95% CI, 58% to 85%). The probability of persistence of AR ranged from 33% (no risk factors present) to 83% (full model; 95% CI, 70% to 97%). The course of AR over puberty can be predicted using risk factors that are easy to determine in childhood. Sensitization to outdoor allergens seems to play a much greater role for disease development than sensitization to indoor allergens. This might help pediatricians in advising patients.
