A Research on Key Technologies in All-Optical Label Switching Networks

With the rapid development of Internet technology, the capacity of communication system is increasing rapidly and traditional switching technology based on optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) conversion cannot satisfy requirements for information exchange. Construction of a high-speed, large-capacity, high-bandwidth all-optical switching network will be the future direction of communication systems. In this paper, the key technologies in all-optical label switching networks are investigated. First, five kinds of optical label technologies are studied. The principles and implementation methods of them are analyzed and compared. Then, optical switching fabrics based on different kinds of optical switches are discussed. Next, a 160Gb/s Optical Time Division Multiplexing (OTDM) signal 1 × 8 packet switching experiment is introduced. Finally, the research work is summarized, and the design of core nodes in optical packet switching network is prospected.

Orthogonal polarization shift keying label rewriting method in an all-optical label switching network

A novel polarization shift keying label rewriting scheme in 43 Gbit/s all-optical label switching network by synchronous polarization modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The old label can be changed to a new one by just one single step without a label erasure process, which can simplify the network node structure.

Optical labeling scheme using polarization shift keying/vestigial sideband carrier-suppressed return-to-zero orthogonal modulation

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a polarization shift keying label and a vestigial sideband carrier-suppressed return-to-zero payload scheme for a 43 Gbit/s all-optical label switching network. This scheme has a narrow channel bandwidth and a low penalty due to polarization mode dispersion impairments, which confirm it as a candidate technique for the next generation of optical networks.

High spectral efficiency scheme for future all optical label switching network

A high spectral efficiency scheme for all optical label switching (AOLS) network is introduced. The vestigial sideband (VSB) payload with wavelength labeling is proposed in beyond 40Gb/s AOLS networks. Two different label wavelength schemes are considered. The minimum 20dB channel bandwidth of payload and label is 0.40nm in 43Gb/s systems which confirm the payload power penalty less than 1dB at the receiver.

Vestigial-sideband payload for high-speed all-optical label-switching network

A novel vestigial-sideband (VSB) payload scheme is proposed for high-speed all-optical label-switching (AOLS) networks. The combination and separation of the VSB payload and the optical label is experimentally demonstrated, and the influences of the power-split ratio, time-delay interference, interferometric noise (IN), and wavelength difference between the payload and the label are analyzed. Simulation and experiment results show that this VSB payload scheme can highly reduce the channel bandwidth and it is easy to realize by using optical filters, so it is a potential technique to be used in optical networks with bit rate of 40 Gb/s.
