Penerapan Kearifan Lokal di Bandar Udara Internasional Sam Ratulangi di Manado

Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado plays a strategic role as the main gateway for tourists visiting North Sulawesi, making significant contributions to local tourism and the economy. The implementation of local wisdom at this airport, such as the use of regional languages and the integration of cultural elements in terminal design, aims to enrich the tourist experience and showcase the cultural richness of North Sulawesi. However, challenges remain regarding capacity and service quality, as well as maintaining the authenticity of local culture. This study aims to analyze how the application of local wisdom at Sam Ratulangi International Airport impacts the tourist experience in North Sulawesi and to evaluate the local cultural values implemented at the airport in enhancing the visitor experience. The research design uses a qualitative approach with a case study method to assess the application of local wisdom at Sam Ratulangi International Airport, Manado. The study, conducted in July 2024, combines interviews, observations, and documentation to gather data. Interviews with airport managers, local communities, and passengers provide insights into the impact of local wisdom. Observations focus on cultural elements at the airport, while documentation includes official data and relevant literature. Data validity is tested through triangulation of techniques and sources. Data analysis involves reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing to address or refine the research problem. The study findings indicate that the application of local wisdom at Sam Ratulangi International Airport, such as traditional Kolintang music, batik exhibitions, and the use of regional languages, enhances the tourist experience by creating a distinctive atmosphere that introduces North Sulawesi's culture. Local values such as "mapalus" (community cooperation) and "torang samua basudara" (we are all brothers) are reflected in the friendly and efficient service, leaving a positive impression and shaping tourists' views of the region as rich in culture and humanitarian values.

Discrete Choice Model Applications for Air Passenger Airport Choices: A Literature Review

Airport development is a critical factor for regional growth, improving connectivity, and stimulating economic growth. Considering the complexity of planning and policy making in this area, multiple models and frameworks have been introduced to support decision-making processes. Among these, Discrete Choice Models (DCM) stand out for their capacity to project market flows, assess the validity and benefits of implementing airport modifications, tailor policies, improve the operations’ service level, and boost revenues. Given their extensive use and importance, a thorough review of DCM applications within the context of air transportation is both timely and necessary. This review organizes and evaluates the use of DCMs in air transport research. Both descriptive and predictive applications of DCMs are analyzed, focusing on choices related to airports and related levels, such as access mode and airline decisions. Each reviewed study is classified based on the type of model used, application context, data characteristics, employed variables, and methodological contributions. Through this analysis, six prevailing gaps are identified in the current state of DCM application in air transportation: improve data quality, enhance models with detailed trip and passenger information, explore advanced modeling techniques, incorporate general correlation and substitution structures, consider non-compensatory decision-making processes, and extend applications to new geographic and temporal contexts.

Analisis Pencapaian Ground Time Pesawat Airbus A350-900 Maskapai Singapore Airlines Terhadap Kinerja Petugas Ramp Handling di Bandar Udara Internasional Juanda Surabaya

Ground time is one of the important things in handling aircraft while in the apron area and Ramp handling officers are responsible for block on to block off activities and play an important role in improving service functions in the apron area. Ground time that does not comply with company standards can affect flight schedules and operational costs for an airline. This research aims to analyze the ground time achievements of the Airbus A350-900 aircraft on the performance of ramp handling officers. The method used in this research is a quantitative approach with data collection techniques, namely observation and interviews. The data analysis technique uses SPSS 25 which includes descriptive analysis by processing primary data in the form of ground time records for the Airbus A350-900 aircraft for two months which has been adjusted to secondary data, namely company documents to determine the average (mean) ground time each month.Based on the results of descriptive analysis to find out the average ground time, the results obtained in August were 55.53 minutes and in September it was 55.93 minutes, meaning that in general the ground time was still achieved and the performance of the ramp handling officers was very good because they reached the ground time on time. . If ground time is looked at based on the daily schedule, there are still several delays caused by several factors, namely delays in the arrival of planes from the origin airport to the destination airport, weather factors and delays for passengers with baggage.

Green production of airport terminals considering carbon footprint and indoor air quality: A multi-objective optimization perspective

The escalating carbon emissions from global civil aviation, exceeding 70 % of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) forecasted levels between 2013 and 2019, underscore an urgent need for sustainable practices in airport terminal production. To address this challenge, the present study has formulated a multi-objective optimization model that comprehensively incorporates two crucial aspects: carbon emissions from airport terminals and passenger comfort. Specifically, models for carbon emissions and indoor environmental air quality are developed, taking into account factors such as ambient temperature, light intensity, noise, and ventilation quality concerning both airport terminal emissions and passenger comfort. Building upon these models, a multi-objective programming framework is devised, considering practical operational constraints. To contend with uncertainties in model parameters, the model is evolved into a fuzzy optimization framework and thereafter solved by the fuzzy optimization theory. The model’s viability is tested through a case study of Mianyang Airport’s terminal in China’s southwestern region. In the context of concurrently considering carbon emission reduction and optimizing indoor environmental quality, winter carbon emissions increased by 212.09 % compared to summer, while indoor environmental quality declined by 5.68 %.

Does the Airport Servicescape Affect the Relationship between Airport Outcome Quality and Passenger Satisfaction?

Airports promote passenger satisfaction with superior service. Airport outcome quality (AOQ) is a part of Airport Service Quality (ASQ), which impacts daily service performance. In this study, the airport servicescape influenced the link between airport outcome quality and passenger satisfaction. The model was developed using the Hierarchical Service Quality Model (HSQM) and Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theory, incorporating two direct and moderated paths. The study utilized a convenience sampling technique and conducted a cross-sectional survey of international travellers at critical airports in Tanzania. 389 respondents were evaluated using the PLS-SEM technique. Significant enhancements have been made in the direct and moderated relationships between airport outcome quality and passenger satisfaction. The airport environment was more effectively managed than the direct route. The environment of an airport improves the satisfaction of international airport passengers. Moreover, these findings have implications for theory, methodology, management, and policy. The study enhances the partial least squares research methodologies, specifically for higher-order structures. The study shows airport architects and officials that the airport servicescape is crucial for improving customer satisfaction at airport terminals.

Fuzzy inference system for forecasting non-aeronautical revenues considering the customer experience

Non-aeronautical revenues are associated with commercial activities at the airport, in which the fundamental factor in managing these revenues is the customers’ experience. This study numerically analyzed the influence of passenger satisfaction and waiting time on consumption made in the commercial facilities of the Airport Passenger Terminal, operating predominantly with domestic flights. This research was made through a structured questionnaire and the passengers in the airport to support the definition of the behavior of the Fuzzy Inference System. The results show that the greater the passenger satisfaction and waiting time, the greater the chances of significantly shopping. Furthermore, this study presents fuzzy modeling of a rule-based computational intelligence system capable of forecasting non-aeronautical revenues referring to shopping and dining experience, with significant contributions to the literature and airport management.

Does environmental knowledge and performance engender environmental behavior at airports? A moderated mediation effect

PurposeDrawing on the reasoned action theory, this study aims to examine the impact of environmental knowledge (EK) and environmental sustainability performance (EP) on environmental behavior (EB) mediated by environmental attitude (ATT). Furthermore, to examine the moderating effect of environmental advertising (ADD) on the indirect relationship between EP and EB, mediated by ATT on the one hand, and EK on EB, on the other hand, mediated by ATT.Design/methodology/approachThe data were gathered within an international context for passengers from North African countries (NAC) (Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco and Sudan) using primary quantitative data from online and self-administered questionnaires. A total of 1,052 questionnaires were collected from passengers who traveled through Egyptian airports. The collected data were analyzed through covariance-based structural equation modeling.FindingsThe findings indicated that ATT moderates the relationship between environmental knowledge and behavior. In addition, ATT mediates the airports' environmental behavior and environmental sustainability performance. Moreover, ADD moderates the indirect association between EP and individuals' environmental knowledge and behavior through the mediated effect of ATT.Research limitations/implicationsThis research output will help extend the theory’s scope by conceptualizing its abstract ideas using research variables and applying them in NAC countries. This can be a milestone for altering individuals' behavior toward the environment in airports.Practical implicationsThis study aims to assist airport authorities in the development of standards for enhancing environmental performance. Enhancing environmental issues is of utmost importance, especially in the context of airports, which have been a subject of significant environmental concern. This study examined the environmental practices of airport passengers in NAC, given their significant role as the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions on the African continent. The present approach has the potential to be utilized in modifying airport conduct and enhancing stakeholder engagement, specifically within the context of NAC.Social implicationsThe objective of this study is to enhance the relationship between nature and humans by endeavoring to modify human attitudes toward the environment. The objective of this initiative is to bridge the current disparity in the socio-environmental connection by fostering environmental consciousness among individuals who utilize airport facilities. The objective will be accomplished by the construction of a theoretical framework that integrates crucial elements acknowledged for their substantial influence on altering human attitudes, thus fostering a greater sense of environmental consciousness and ultimately improving societal well-being.Originality/valueSince the global supply chain prioritizes environmental transportation systems, this study provides a conceptual framework for airport authorities to develop and create policies to push air passengers' behavior toward environmental practices in NAC.

An Overview of Demand Analysis and Forecasting Algorithms for the Flow of Checked Baggage among Departing Passengers

The research on baggage flow plays a pivotal role in achieving the efficient and intelligent allocation and scheduling of airport service resources, as well as serving as a fundamental element in determining the design, development, and process optimization of airport baggage handling systems. This paper examines baggage checked in by departing passengers at airports. The crrent state of the research on baggage flow demand is first reviewed and analyzed. Then, using examples of objective data, it is concluded that while there is a significant correlation between airport passenger flow and baggage flow, an increase in passenger flow does not necessarily result in a proportional increase in baggage flow. According to the existing research results on the influencing factors of baggage flow sorting and classification, the main influencing factors of baggage flow are divided into two categories: macro-influencing factors and micro-influencing factors. When studying the relationship between the economy and baggage flow, it is recommended to use a comprehensive analysis that includes multiple economic indicators, rather than relying solely on GDP. This paper provides a brief overview of prevalent transportation flow prediction methods, categorizing algorithmic models into three groups: based on mathematical and statistical models, intelligent algorithmic-based models, and combined algorithmic models utilizing artificial neural networks. The structures, strengths, and weaknesses of various transportation flow prediction algorithms are analyzed, as well as their application scenarios. The potential advantages of using artificial neural network-based combined prediction models for baggage flow forecasting are explained. It concludes with an outlook on research regarding the demand for baggage flow. This review may provide further research assistance to scholars in airport management and baggage handling system development.

This study delves into the concept of Smart Airports, focusing on passenger perceptions of technology and its role in shaping competitiveness within the tourism sector. Through an analysis of passenger perceptions and expectations, this research aims to provide a clearer understanding of the Smart Airport concept, considering gender perspectives, which represent a novel contribution to existing literature. Recognizing the pivotal role of air transport infrastructures in destination competitiveness, this study investigates the impact of technology improvements on passenger satisfaction and overall travel experience. By examining the relationship between airport technologies and passenger perceptions, satisfaction, and enjoyment, this research underscores the importance of integrating new technologies to enhance airport services and meet evolving passenger needs. The role of quality in airport services in passenger satisfaction at Aden Adde International Airport, Mogadishu, Somalia

Service quality is crucial for all service providers operating in the open market across all industries, particularly in the aviation sector, which produces billions of dollars in annual revenue from its services. The level of service quality significantly influences client satisfaction, and conversely, customer happiness reciprocally affects the service provider. In order to attain diverse company objectives, it is imperative to prioritize customer happiness specifically during the process of privatization. The primary objective of this research is to examine the influence of airport service quality on customer satisfaction within the context of a privatized airport. Descriptive and correlation analyses were utilized in the study. A total of 400 questionnaires were administered to passengers who embarked from Aden Adde International Airport as part of the study. Subsequently, the data was subjected to analysis utilizing a statistical software program designed for social science software (SPSS). The results of this analysis revealed a robust and positive correlation between Airport customer services and customer happiness. The study additionally revealed that a significant proportion of the airport's passengers expressed dissatisfaction with the services provided by Aden Adde International airport.

Relationship between the terminal built environment and airport retail revenue

Non-aeronautical business, including airport retail, is an essential source of airport revenue. The locations of retail stores in an airport terminal building significantly impact their revenue. Based on the retail store-level data from Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport (DLC), the traditional panel data regression and machine learning methods were employed to explore the relationships between the terminal built environment and airport retail revenue. The results indicate the following: (1) non-linear relationships exist between airport retail store revenue and the terminal built environment. (2) Airport passenger traffic is still the principal factor in retail store revenue. (3) Variables including area, function halls, and per capita spending have different impacts on the revenue of food and beverage (F&B) and specialty retail (SR) stores. The optimal location sites for retail stores are as far away from the nearest washroom as possible while being as close to gates as possible.

Better Airport Capacity Predictions: Deploying Applied System Dynamics at Tan Son Nhat Airport

In recent times, Tan Son Nhat Airport, Vietnam's largest, has consistently experienced major congestion due to significant increases in passenger volume and a lack of infrastructure and equipment to handle the rising flight volume. Deploying a system dynamics approach, this paper attempts to illuminate the interdependencies between airport infrastructure and passenger volume to better inform policy decision-making by more accurately predicting the necessary infrastructure requirements to meet the increasing passenger demand.

Stereo object matching for mobile robot path planning using artificial fish algorithms

<span>The <span>popularity of robots is on the rise, not only in industrial settings but increasingly in daily venues such as airports. Recently, some organizations have carried out experiments utilizing robots specifically created to improve airport hygiene, security, and passengers’ overall satisfaction. Furthermore, the utilization of the artificial fish (AFs) algorithm in path planning for mobile robots yielded exceptional outcomes. The robot can replicate the prey behavior of the AFs algorithm, as evidenced by the prevalence of pos one in the simulation. The robot exhibits another behavior, which is the subsequent behavior. The behavior of the AFs algorithm is influenced by the available food sources. Simultaneously, mobile robots are influenced by the stimulation of their neighboring responses. Afterwards, the three primary classifiers are employed to perform stereo-object matching on different objects. The recognition rate achieved by the AdaBoost classifier is promising, with an accuracy rate of 92.4%. This result shows excellent potential for improving the path planning of mobile robots equipped with visual surveillance systems for their surroundings.</span></span>

Airport accessibility surveys and mobile phone records data fusion for the analysis of air travel behaviour

Mobility surveys normally present a high level of detail, but their sample size tends to be bounded due to high sampling cost. Meanwhile, anonymised mobile network data present a significant sample size, but may lack detailed travellers’ trip information (e.g., trip purpose, mode choice, etc.). This paper uses airport passenger surveys to develop a set of machine learning models able to estimate the passengers travel purpose and access modal choice in order to reconstruct the door-to-door trip information obtained from mobile network data in future studies. The proposed approach is demonstrated and evaluated for Madrid-Barajas and Palma de Mallorca airports.

Short-term forecasting airport passenger flow during periods of volatility: Comparative investigation of time series vs. neural network models

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), known for handling complex data tasks like language translation and speech recognition, are seldom employed in airport management practice for daily and weekly passenger flow forecasting tasks. In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness and adaptability of various neural network models (RNN, LSTM, GRU, Deep LSTM, Bidirectional LSTM, multivariate RNN, and multivariate LSTM) against standard time series models (ARIMA, SARIMA, and SARIMAX) for a short-term forecasting airport security checkpoint passenger flows at five major U.S. airports during the pandemic.At Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL), the RNN notably surpasses SARIMA’s forecasting accuracy by 34% (DM = 3.44, p < 0.01). This underscores RNN’s superiority in handling complex interactions among variables and non-linear dynamics, demonstrating its readiness for the emerging data-rich environment. Including exogenous variables enhances the forecasting accuracies of the multivariate RNN/LSTM (DM = 6.82, p < 0.01; DM = 2.65, p < 0.01, respectively), while the SARIMAX struggles with the added complexity.We observed the same patterns at the other four airports studied (DEN/ORD/LAX/DFW) during the pandemic period. However, during the normal airport traffic period, the clear superiority of RNN became much less pronounced, obscuring the performance gap between RNN and SARIMA. This suggests that the inherent advantages of RNN in capturing non-linearity are accentuated during volatile conditions and less pronounced or not pronounced at all during routine periods.

The Impact of Service Orientation and Airport Service Quality on Passenger Satisfaction and Image: Evidence from Indonesia

Background: Airport service quality and service orientation are important aspects of managing passenger satisfaction and airport image. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of service orientation and airport service quality on airport image through passenger satisfaction as an intervention variable. Methods: The survey was conducted on 356 passengers at the departure area and lounge. Samples were taken at five major airports in Indonesia, including Soekarno Hatta International Airport. To test the influence of exogenous variables on endogenous variables through intervening variables, a quantitative testing analysis test was carried out using the structural equation model partial least square (SEM-PLS). Result: The research results show that service orientation has a significant and positive effect on airport service quality, passenger satisfaction, and airport image. Moreover, service quality also has a positive effect on passenger satisfaction and the airport’s image. Empirically, passenger satisfaction has been proven to mediate the influence of service quality and service orientation on airport image. It has been proven that airport operators who focus on passengers through service orientation can increase passenger satisfaction and the airport’s image. Conclusions: Focusing on passengers’ needs while at the airport is an important aspect for airport operators who aim to manage their emotions, which encourages passengers to use paid services while in the waiting room. The use of this paid service will directly increase the airport’s aeronautical revenue. Future research needs to consider the influence of image on purchase intention and return to the airport.

Estimating the Spatial Spillover Effects of Transportation Infrastructure on Economic Growth in an Archipelagic Nation

Transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in facilitating economic growth and mitigating socio-economic disparities. Countries with adequate transportation infrastructure have a comparative advantage in international and domestic trade and in reducing economic and social disparities. Numerous studies have examined the spatial relationship between transportation infrastructure and economic growth, particularly in developed nations like the US and China. However, research on developing countries is scarce and pays little attention to archipelagic nations like the Philippines. This paper estimates the spatial spillover effects of transportation infrastructures in the three major islands of the Philippines for the time period 2003–2020 using the spatial Durbin model (SDM). More specifically, it examined the spatial spillover effects of transportation infrastructure, specifically roads, bridges, airports, and seaports on economic growth. The findings indicate the presence of positive spillover effects of transportation infrastructure at both the national and island levels. However, the spillover effects of transportation infrastructure variables differ significantly across the three major islands. The road length in Luzon and Visayas exhibits a negative trend, whereas Mindanao demonstrates a significant positive trend. The bridges in Luzon and Visayas are positive. Airport passengers in Visayas and Mindanao are negative. Seaport passenger is negative in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Seaport cargo is positive across major islands. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of appropriate and targeted transportation infrastructure investments in each of the major islands has the potential to foster economic growth Moreover, the results can serve as a valuable resource and integral element of the government’s strategic plan for national and regional development, facilitating the acceleration of economic growth and enhancing productivity at the regional level.

Flexible facility requirements for strategic planning of airport passenger terminal infrastructure

Facility requirements determine how and when the capacity of airport passenger terminal facilities is adjusted over time to meet expected demand. Given high levels of uncertainty inherent in long-term airport planning, under and over provision of capacity is a recurrent risk, as conventional strategic planning methods fail to adapt dynamically to changing circumstances. This paper introduces a novel flexible capacity expansion model for airport terminals that considers simultaneously real options ‘on’ and ‘in’ systems. The model is validated for the provision of check-in facilities at Zurich Airport. Results confirm suggestions in the literature that incorporating flexibility creates planning and financial advantages over conventional alternatives. Indeed, for the case of Zurich, the financial value of the flexible alternative is approximately 5% higher than the best conventional phased plan. This also suggests that phasing developments can be carefully devised to produce satisfactory outcomes that enable ex-post application of flexibility ‘on’ systems.

Decarbonising airports: an examination of UK airports’ net zero targets

ABSTRACT In 2021, the international air transport industry committed itself to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Although much attention has focused on addressing in-flight emissions, strategies for decarbonising airports have received less consideration despite the carbon intensity of their operations. The purpose of this paper is to examine the existence and content of the net zero strategies of the UK’s 25 largest passenger airports in order to assess their net zero readiness and provide recommendations for future policy and practice. The UK was selected as it was one of the first countries worldwide to write net zero aims into national legislation and set specific targets for airports. The findings indicate that while UK airports are aware of the importance of net zero, they are in the early stages of developing net zero strategies and wide variations in net zero reference and target years and proposed routes to decarbonisation are evident. The research reveals a lack of standardised emissions categorisation and reporting methodologies. Recommendations including creating national best practice guidance for net zero strategies and standardising terminology and reporting mechanisms to help support airport operators in meeting their net zero commitments are proposed by way of a conclusion.
