Urban and peri-urban trees in major cities provide a gateway for exotic pests and diseases (hereafter “pests”) to establish and spread into new countries. Consequently, they can be used as sentinels for early detection of exotic pests that could threaten commercial, environmental and amenity forests. Biosecurity surveillance for exotic forest pests relies on monitoring of host trees — or sentinel trees — around high-risk sites, such as airports and seaports. There are few publicly available spatial databases of urban street and park trees, so locating and mapping host trees is conducted via ground surveys. This is time-consuming and resource-intensive, and generally does not provide complete coverage. Advances in remote sensing technologies and machine learning provide an opportunity for semi-automation of tree species mapping to assist in biosecurity surveillance. In this study, we obtained high resolution (≥12 cm), 10-band, multispectral imagery using the ArborCam™ system mounted to a fixed-wing aircraft over Sydney, Australia. We mapped 630 Pinus trees and 439 Platanus trees on-foot, validating their exact location on the airborne imagery using an in-field mapping app. Using a machine learning, convolutional neural network workflow, we were able to classify the two target genera with a high level of accuracy in a complex urban landscape. Overall accuracy was 92.1% for Pinus and 95.2% for Platanus, precision (user’s accuracy) ranged from 61.3% to 77.6%, sensitivity (producer’s accuracy) ranged from 92.7% to 95.2%, and F1-score ranged from 74.6% to 84.4%. Our study validates the potential for using multispectral imagery and machine learning to increase efficiencies in tree biosecurity surveillance. We encourage biosecurity agencies to consider greater use of this technology.

Mapping nectar-rich pollinator floral resources using airborne multispectral imagery

Wild pollinator numbers are known to be positively associated with amounts of flower-rich habitat at landscape level. Increasing floral resources can be particularly beneficial in relatively nectar-poor agricultural systems and having a baseline understanding of the temporal and spatial availability of resources can allow targeted habitat management. Very high-resolution remote sensing has potential to facilitate accurate mapping of fine-scale, within-habitat pollinator foraging resources, thereby allowing spatial and temporal gaps to be identified and addressed, improving predictions of pollinator numbers, and enabling remote monitoring of pollinator conservation measures.Concentrating on hedgerow and flower-rich field margins in a UK agricultural landscape, we showed that multispectral airborne imagery with 3 cm and 7 cm spatial resolutions can be used to classify five nectar-rich flowering plant species (Prunus spinosa, Crataegus monogyna, Rubus fruticosus, Silene dioica and Centaurea nigra) using a maximum likelihood classification algorithm. In 2019, we separately acquired 3 cm and 7 cm imagery for the months of March, May and July, respectively. Overall accuracies were above 90% for each month at both 3 cm and 7 cm resolutions (range 92.32%–98.72%), supporting previous research that suggests higher spatial resolutions do not necessarily lead to higher accuracies, as pixel variability is increased.Remaining challenges include determining which co-flowering species of similar colours in the visible range can be distinguished from one another within classifications and quantifying floral unit density from classifications so that the nectar sugar supply can be calculated. Nonetheless, we provided a prototype approach for mapping pollinator foraging resources in an agricultural context, which can be extended to other nectar-rich species. The foundation is set for developing a remote sensing pipeline that can provide valuable data on the availability of nectar-rich flowering plant species at different time-points throughout the year.

Classification of airborne multispectral imagery to quantify common vole impacts on an agricultural field.

BACKGROUNDThe common vole (Microtus arvalis) is a very destructive agricultural pest. Particularly in Europe, its monitoring is essential not only for adequate management and outbreak forecasting, but also for accurately determining the vole's impact on affected fields. In this study, several alternatives for estimating the damage to alfalfa fields by voles through unmanned vehicle systems (UASs) and multispectral cameras are presented. Currently, both the farmers and agencies involved in the integrated pest management (IPM) programs of voles do not have sufficiently precise methods for accurate assessments of the real impact to crops.RESULTSOverall, the four multispectral classification methods presented showed similar performances. However, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)‐based segmentation exhibited the most accurate and reliable appraisal of the affected areas. Nevertheless, it must be noted that the simplest method, which was based on an automatic classification, provided results similar to those obtained by more complex methods. In addition, a significant direct relationship was found between the number of active burrows and damage to the alfalfa canopy.CONCLUSIONUnmanned vehicle systems, combined with multispectral imagery classification, are an effective and easily transferable methodology for the assessment and monitoring of common vole damage to agricultural plots. This combination of methods facilitates decision‐making processes for IPM control strategies against this pest. © 2022 The Authors. Tree architecture, light interception and water-use related traits are controlled by different genomic regions in an apple tree core collection.

Summary Tree architecture shows large genotypic variability, but how this affects water‐deficit responses is poorly understood. To assess the possibility of reaching ideotypes with adequate combinations of architectural and functional traits in the face of climate change, we combined high‐throughput field phenotyping and genome‐wide association studies (GWAS) on an apple tree (Malus domestica) core‐collection.We used terrestrial light detection and ranging (T‐LiDAR) scanning and airborne multispectral and thermal imagery to monitor tree architecture, canopy shape, light interception, vegetation indices and transpiration on 241 apple cultivars submitted to progressive field soil drying. GWAS was performed with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)‐by‐SNP and multi‐SNP methods.Large phenotypic and genetic variability was observed for all traits examined within the collection, especially canopy surface temperature in both well‐watered and water deficit conditions, suggesting control of water loss was largely genotype‐dependent. Robust genomic associations revealed independent genetic control for the architectural and functional traits. Screening associated genomic regions revealed candidate genes involved in relevant pathways for each trait.We show that multiple allelic combinations exist for all studied traits within this collection. This opens promising avenues to jointly optimize tree architecture, light interception and water use in breeding strategies. Genotypes carrying favourable alleles depending on environmental scenarios and production objectives could thus be targeted.

Identifying causal changes in landscape greenness with very high-resolution airborne multispectral imagery and a panel data model

To effectively manage urban environmental systems, interventions on private lands may sometimes be necessary. This is illustrated in many water districts where water agencies run programs that provide incentives to landholders to change their landscaping to meet the water agency’s management goals. It is difficult to monitor, track, and evaluate landscape change programs on private land, however. To most efficiently do so, very high-resolution, time-series measurements of urban landcover would be useful, but such data is often unavailable. This study evaluates how private urban landscape change is represented in the highest resolution, publicly available, multispectral data product distributed in the United States. The study focuses on residential parcels that participated in a lawn replacement rebate program run by the East Bay Municipal Utility District, a water agency in California. Each parcel has a known quantity of turfgrass converted to drought-tolerant landscaping. The study asks if Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) values derived from National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) data can be used to detect participation in a lawn replacement program at the parcel-level. While the NAIP data product has substantial error in a time-series and urban context, this study finds that approaching change detection using a fixed effect panel data model accommodates error, making it possible to identify NDVI change. With control groups defined by matching and weighing with Covariate Balancing Propensity Scores, results indicate that observed browning at the parcel-level can be causally attributed to participating in the lawn replacement program. This ability to detect small, causal changes in a heterogenous environment opens possibilities for monitoring and evaluating programs acting on private urban landscapes, contributing to more effective and efficient design, pricing and implementation.

Shrub Fractional Cover Estimation and Mapping of San Clemente Island Shrubland Based on Airborne Multispectral Imagery and Lidar Data

The purpose of this study is to map shrub distributions and estimate shrub cover fractions based on the classification of high-spatial-resolution aerial orthoimagery and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data for portions of the highly disturbed coastal sage scrub landscapes of San Clemente Island, California. We utilized nine multi-temporal aerial orthoimage sets for the 2010 to 2018 period to map shrub cover. Pixel-based and object-based image analysis (OBIA) approaches to image classification of growth forms were tested. Shrub fractional cover was estimated for 10, 20 and 40 m grid sizes and assessed for accuracy. The most accurate estimates of shrub cover were generated with the OBIA method with both multispectral brightness values and canopy height estimates from a normalized digital surface model (nDSM). Fractional cover products derived from 2015 and 2017 orthoimagery with nDSM data incorporated yielded the highest accuracies. Major factors that influenced the accuracy of shrub maps and fractional cover estimates include the time of year and spatial resolution of the imagery, the type of classifier, feature inputs to the classifier, and the grid size used for fractional cover estimation. While tracking actual changes in shrub cover over time was not the purpose, this study illustrates the importance of consistent mapping approaches and high-quality inputs, including very-high-spatial-resolution imagery and an nDSM.

Catchment-scale, high-resolution, hydraulic models and habitat maps – a salmonid's perspective

The advent of remotely-sensed high-resolution imagery has led to the development of methods to map river bathymetry. In this study, we utilized high-resolution imagery to map river depth and quantify hydraulic habitats at the catchment scale (>1000 km2) during low flows. Using 0.3-m airborne multi-spectral imagery (resampled to 0.5 m), we mapped contiguous river depth (124 km) within a well-established Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) and Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) river – The Little Southwest Miramichi, New Brunswick. We built image-derived depth maps with and without field data calibration. The model without field calibration data (flow resistance equation‐based imaging of river depths) accurately described river depths (R 2 = 72.7; RMSE = 0.167 m; n = 762); however, it overestimated shallow depths. The field-calibrated model removed shallow depth errors (R 2 = 76.4; RMSE = 0.155 m; n = 762). We mapped velocity using a relationship between river geometry and discharge, and coalesced the field-calibrated depth and velocity maps to create Froude and Reynolds number maps. Finally, we performed an unsupervised classification model to delineate the hydraulically relevant habitat units for salmonids. This approach provides an unprecedented view of catchment-scale hydraulic habitats that will advance both hydrological process research and river resources management.

Spectral Unmixing for Thermal Infrared Multi-Spectral Airborne Imagery over Urban Environments: Day and Night Synergy

TRUST (Thermal Remote sensing Unmixing for Subpixel Temperature) is a spectral unmixing method developed to provide subpixel abundances and temperatures from radiance images in the thermal domain. By now, this method has been studied in simple study cases, with a low number of endmembers, high spatial resolutions (1 m) and more than 30 spectral bands in the thermal domain. Thus, this article aims to show the applicability of TRUST on a highly challenging study case: the analysis of a heterogeneous urban environment with airborne multispectral (eight thermal bands) images at 8-m resolution. Thus, this study is necessary to generalize the use of TRUST in the analysis of urban thermography. Since TRUST allows linking intrapixel temperatures to specific materials, it appears as a very useful tool to characterize Surface Urban Heat Islands and its dynamics at high spatial resolutions. Moreover, this article presents an improved version of TRUST, called TRUST-DNS (Day and Night Synergy), which takes advantage of daytime and nighttime acquisitions to improve the unmixing performances. In this study, both TRUST and TRUST-DNS were applied on daytime and nighttime airborne thermal images acquired over the center of Madrid during the DESIREX (Dual-use European Security IR Experiment) campaign in 2008. The processed images were obtained with the Aircraft Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) sensor at 4-m spatial resolution on 4 July. TRUST-DNS appears to be more stable and slightly outperforms TRUST on both day and night images. In addition, TRUST applied on daytime outperforms TRUST on nighttime, illustrating the importance of the temperature contrasts during day for thermal unmixing.

Detection of Xylella fastidiosa infection symptoms with airborne multispectral and thermal imagery: Assessing bandset reduction performance from hyperspectral analysis

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a harmful plant pathogenic bacterium, able to infect over 500 plant species worldwide. Successful eradication and containment strategies for harmful pathogens require large-scale monitoring techniques for the detection of infected hosts, even when they do not display visual symptoms. Although a previous study using airborne hyperspectral and thermal imagery has shown promising results for the early detection of Xf-infected olive (Olea europaea) trees, further work is needed when adopting these techniques for large scale monitoring using multispectral cameras on board airborne platforms and satellites. We used hyperspectral and thermal imagery collected during a two-year airborne campaign in a Xf-infected area in southern Italy to assess the performance of spectrally constrained machine-learning algorithms for this task. The algorithms were used to assess multispectral bandsets, selected from the original hyperspectral imagery, that were compatible with large-scale monitoring from unmanned platforms and manned aircraft. In addition, the contribution of solar–induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and the temperature-based Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) retrieved from hyperspectral and thermal imaging, respectively, were evaluated to quantify their relative importance in the algorithms used to detect Xf infection. The detection performance using support vector machine algorithms decreased from ∼80% (kappa, κ = 0.42) when using the original full hyperspectral dataset including SIF and CWSI to ∼74% (κ = 0.36) when the optimal set of six spectral bands most sensitive to Xf infection were used in addition to the CWSI thermal indicator. When neither SIF nor CWSI were used, the detection yielded less than 70% accuracy (decreasing κ to very low performance, 0.29), revealing that tree temperature was more important than chlorophyll fluorescence for the Xf detection. This work demonstrates that large-scale Xf monitoring can be supported using airborne platforms carrying multispectral and thermal cameras with a limited number of spectral bands (e.g., six to 12 bands with 10 nm bandwidths) as long as they are carefully selected by their sensitivity to the Xf symptoms. More precisely, the blue (bands between 400 and 450 nm to derive the NPQI index) and thermal (to derive CWSI from tree temperature) were the most critical spectral regions for their sensitivity to Xf symptoms in olive.

Sensor-based evaluation of maize (Zea mays) and weed response to post-emergence herbicide applications of Isoxaflutole and Cyprosulfamide applied as crop seed treatment or herbicide mixing partner.

Some maize post-emergence herbicides obtain their crop/weed selectivity only through the use of chemical crop safeners. Safeners improve the tolerance of maize to herbicidal active ingredients. In order to investigate the crop response to safener (cyprosulfamide) spray application and seed treatment, greenhouse and field trials were conducted on three maize development stages (2-, 4-, and 6-leaf stage). Visual estimations on crop vitality were compared to ground-based and airborne hyperspectral and multispectral sensors. The reduction of cyprosulfamide by 88% when applied as seed treatment did not significantly reduce maize biomass yields at the field. The crop deterioration in both trials was stronger in the cyprosulfamide seed treatments compared to the spray applications but was found to be transient in the field trial. The hyperspectral sensor and multispectral camera data correlated with R2 = 0.84 (CropSpec Vegetation Index) and R2 = 0.64 (Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The sensor-based collection of crop responses to treatments enables early, quantifiable and auditor-independent assessments. In particular, the airborne multispectral imagery assessment of field experiments provides more detailed and comprehensive information than visually collected data. © 2019 The Authors. Seabed Mapping in Coastal Shallow Waters Using High Resolution Multispectral and Hyperspectral Imagery

Coastal ecosystems experience multiple anthropogenic and climate change pressures. To monitor the variability of the benthic habitats in shallow waters, the implementation of effective strategies is required to support coastal planning. In this context, high-resolution remote sensing data can be of fundamental importance to generate precise seabed maps in coastal shallow water areas. In this work, satellite and airborne multispectral and hyperspectral imagery were used to map benthic habitats in a complex ecosystem. In it, submerged green aquatic vegetation meadows have low density, are located at depths up to 20 m, and the sea surface is regularly affected by persistent local winds. A robust mapping methodology has been identified after a comprehensive analysis of different corrections, feature extraction, and classification approaches. In particular, atmospheric, sunglint, and water column corrections were tested. In addition, to increase the mapping accuracy, we assessed the use of derived information from rotation transforms, texture parameters, and abundance maps produced by linear unmixing algorithms. Finally, maximum likelihood (ML), spectral angle mapper (SAM), and support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithms were considered at the pixel and object levels. In summary, a complete processing methodology was implemented, and results demonstrate the better performance of SVM but the higher robustness of ML to the nature of information and the number of bands considered. Hyperspectral data increases the overall accuracy with respect to the multispectral bands (4.7% for ML and 9.5% for SVM) but the inclusion of additional features, in general, did not significantly improve the seabed map quality.

Site-Specific Management of Cotton Root Rot Using Airborne and High-Resolution Satellite Imagery and Variable-Rate Technology

Abstract. Cotton root rot is a century-old cotton disease that now can be effectively controlled with Topguard Terra fungicide. Because this disease tends to occur in the same general areas within fields in recurring years, site-specific application of the fungicide only to infested areas can be as effective as and considerably more economical than uniform application. The overall objective of this research was to demonstrate how site-specific fungicide application could be implemented based on historical remote sensing imagery and using variable-rate technology. Procedures were developed for creating binary prescription maps from historical airborne and high-resolution satellite imagery. Two different variable-rate liquid control systems were adapted to two existing cotton planters, respectively, for site-specific fungicide application at planting. One system was used for site-specific application on multiple fields in 2015 and 2016 near Edroy, Texas, and the other system was used on multiple fields in both years near San Angelo, Texas. Airborne multispectral imagery taken during the two growing seasons was used to monitor the performance of the site-specific treatments. Results based on prescription maps derived from historical airborne and satellite imagery of two fields in 2015 and one field in 2016 are reported in this article. Two years of field experiments showed that the prescription maps and the variable-rate systems performed well and that site-specific fungicide treatments effectively controlled cotton root rot. Reduction in fungicide use was 41%, 43%, and 63% for the three fields, respectively. The methodologies and results of this research will provide cotton growers, crop consultants, and agricultural dealers with practical guidelines for implementing site-specific fungicide application using historical imagery and variable-rate technology for effective management of cotton root rot. Evaluation of Sentinel-2A Satellite Imagery for Mapping Cotton Root Rot

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is an economically important crop that is highly susceptible to cotton root rot. Remote sensing technology provides a useful and effective means for detecting and mapping cotton root rot infestations in cotton fields. This research assessed the potential of 10-m Sentinel-2A satellite imagery for cotton root rot detection and compared it with airborne multispectral imagery using unsupervised classification at both field and regional levels. Accuracy assessment showed that the classification maps from the Sentinel-2A imagery had an overall accuracy of 94.1% for field subset images and 91.2% for the whole image, compared with the airborne image classification results. However, some small cotton root rot areas were undetectable and some non-infested areas within large root rot areas were incorrectly classified as infested due to the images’ coarse spatial resolution. Classification maps based on field subset Sentinel-2A images missed 16.6% of the infested areas and the classification map based on the whole Sentinel-2A image for the study area omitted 19.7% of the infested areas. These results demonstrate that freely-available Sentinel-2 imagery can be used as an alternative data source for identifying cotton root rot and creating prescription maps for site-specific management of the disease.

Statistical correction of lidar-derived digital elevation models with multispectral airborne imagery in tidal marshes

Abstract Airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) is a valuable tool for collecting large amounts of elevation data across large areas; however, the limited ability to penetrate dense vegetation with lidar hinders its usefulness for measuring tidal marsh platforms. Methods to correct lidar elevation data are available, but a reliable method that requires limited field work and maintains spatial resolution is lacking. We present a novel method, the Lidar Elevation Adjustment with NDVI (LEAN), to correct lidar digital elevation models (DEMs) with vegetation indices from readily available multispectral airborne imagery (NAIP) and RTK-GPS surveys. Using 17 study sites along the Pacific coast of the U.S., we achieved an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.072 m, with a 40–75% improvement in accuracy from the lidar bare earth DEM. Results from our method compared favorably with results from three other methods (minimum-bin gridding, mean error correction, and vegetation correction factors), and a power analysis applying our extensive RTK-GPS dataset showed that on average 118 points were necessary to calibrate a site-specific correction model for tidal marshes along the Pacific coast. By using available imagery and with minimal field surveys, we showed that lidar-derived DEMs can be adjusted for greater accuracy while maintaining high (1 m) resolution.

Automated Individual Tree Isolation on High-Resolution Imagery: Possible Methods for Breaking Isolations Involving Multiple Trees

One of the key problems in automated individual tree crown delineation, whether from multispectral or lidar data, is the grouping of several trees into a single tree crown outline (isol). Using airborne multispectral imagery, we explored four approaches to breaking such isols into multiple crowns: “core,” “tree top,” “template matching,” and “basin” breaks. Core breaks are made using only isol shape and morphological primitives. Tree top and template matching breaks utilize image maxima and pattern, and watershed drainage basins form the basis of basin breaks. The effectiveness of each of the four break types was assessed against the presence and position of the true boundary between multiple tree crowns and with reference to original isol shape. There was correspondence and differences between breaks of different types. A set of rules was developed to choose a single break when there was positional correspondence of several break types. The rules were based on isol shape type and the break types present. Despite being a complex and difficult issue, it was shown that the concept of identifying poor delineations, recognizing them as cases of multiple trees, and remediating the crown delineations is viable and worthy of further development.

Change detection of cotton root rot infection over 10-year intervals using airborne multispectral imagery

Cotton root rot is a very serious and destructive disease of cotton grown in the southwestern United States. Accurate information regarding its spatial and temporal distribution within fields is important for effective management of the disease. The objectives of this study were to examine the consistency and variation of cotton root rot infections within cotton fields over 10-year intervals using airborne multispectral imagery and to assess the feasibility to use historical imagery to create prescription maps for site-specific management of the disease. Airborne multispectral images collected from a 102-ha cotton field in 2001 and 2011 and from a 97-ha field in 2002 and 2012 in south Texas were used in this study. The images were rectified and resampled to the same pixel size between the two years for each field. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) images were generated and unsupervised classification was then used to classify the NDVI images into root rot-infected and non-infected zones. Change detection analysis was performed to detect the consistency and change in root rot infection between the two growing seasons for each field. Results indicate that the spatial patterns of the disease were similar between the two seasons, though variations existed for each field. To account for the potential expansion and temporal variation of the disease, buffer zones around the infected areas were created. The buffered maps between the two years agreed well. The results from this study demonstrate that classification maps derived from historical images in conjunction with appropriate buffer zones can be used as prescription maps for site-specific fungicide application to control cotton root rot.

Identifying tree crown delineation shapes and need for remediation on high resolution imagery using an evidence based approach

In order to fully realize the benefits of automated individual tree mapping for tree species, health, forest inventory attribution and forest management decision making, the tree delineations should be as good as possible. The concept of identifying poorly delineated tree crowns and suggesting likely types of remediation was investigated. Delineations (isolations or isols) were classified into shape types reflecting whether they were realistic tree shapes and the likely kind of remediation needed. Shape type was classified by an evidence based rules approach using primitives based on isol size, shape indices, morphology, the presence of local maxima, and matches with template models representing trees of different sizes.A test set containing 50,000 isols based on an automated tree delineation of 40cm multispectral airborne imagery of a diverse temperate-boreal forest site was used. Isolations representing single trees or several trees were the focus, as opposed to cases where a tree is split into several isols. For eight shape classes from regular through to convolute, shape classification accuracy was in the order of 62%; simplifying to six classes accuracy was 83%. Shape type did give an indication of the type of remediation and there were 6% false alarms (i.e., isols classed as needing remediation but did not). Alternately, there were 5% omissions (i.e., isols of regular shape and not earmarked for remediation that did need remediation).The usefulness of the concept of identifying poor delineations in need of remediation was demonstrated and one suite of methods developed and shown to be effective.

Object-oriented and pixel-based classification approaches to classify tropical successional stages using airborne high–spatial resolution images

Airborne high–spatial resolution images were evaluated for mapping purposes in a complex Atlantic rainforest environment in southern Brazil. Two study sites, covered predominantly by secondary evergreen rainforest, were surveyed by airborne multispectral high-resolution imagery. These aerophotogrammetric images were acquired at four spectral bands (visible to near-infrared) with spatial resolution of 0.39 m. We evaluated different data input scenarios to suit the object-oriented classification approach. In addition to the four spectral bands, auxiliary products such as band ratios and digital elevation models were considered. Comparisons with traditional pixel-based classifiers were also performed. The results showed that the object-based classification approach yielded a better overall accuracy, ranging from 89% to 91%, than the pixel-based classifications, which ranged from 62% to 63%. The individual classification accuracy of forest-related classes, such as young successional forest stages, benefits the object-based approach. These classes have been reported in the literature as the most difficult to map in tropical environments. The results confirm the potential of object-based classification for mapping procedures and discrimination of successional forest stages and other related land use and land cover classes in complex Atlantic rainforest environments. The methodology is suggested for further SAAPI acquisitions in order to monitor such endangered environment as well as to support National Land and Environmental Management Protocols.
