Comparative Characteristics of Psychophysiological Peculiarities of Operators of Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Air Traffic Control Personnel

Annotation. The article is devoted to the study and comparison of professionally important psychophysiological peculiarities of operators of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and air traffic control (ATC) personnel who are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The purpose of the study is to establish the kinship and differences in the psychophysiological characteristics of operators of UAS and ATC personnel in order to develop recommendations for conducting professional orientation and professional selection of such specialists. To achieve the goal, 142 operators of UAS and 71 specialists who perform duties in the process of ATC under the age of 40 during the period of inpatient flight medical examination on the basis of the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Central Region were selected. The examination was carried out with the help of blank methods and software and hardware complex for psychophysiological research «PFI-2». It is shown that operators of UAS are more prone to risk compared to ATC personnel. The difference in speed characteristics of operators of UAS and ATC personnel indicates higher requirements for decision-making by operators of UAS and greater exhaustion of to the indicators of the critical frequency of light flickers and the number of omission errors in the implementation of the evaluation of a complex visual-motor reaction, which proves that they are busier during the performance of official duties. The number of correct marks when performing the attention task is higher among ATC personnel, and the number of missed rings among operators of UAS is slightly higher compared to the order studied group. Such an effect may be related to the difference in the form of their professional activity during the performance of assigned tasks. The established difference in the level of psychological and psychophysiological parameters of operators OF UAS and ATC personnel can be used to develop criteria for monitoring professionally important qualities and professional selection of specialists in the specified professions.

Dynamic Path Planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Under Deadline and Sector Capacity Constraints

The US NationalAirspace System is currentlyoperating at a level close to its maximum potential. The limitation comes from the workload demand on the air traffic controllers. Currently, the air traffic flow management is based on the flight path requests by the airline operators, whereas the minimum separation assurance between flights is handled strategically by air traffic control personnel. In this paper, we propose a scalable framework that allows path planning for a large number of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) taking into account the deadline and weather constraints. Our proposed solution has a polynomial-time computational complexity that is also verified by measuringthe runtime for typical workloads. We further demonstrate that the proposed framework is able to route 80% of the workloads while not exceeding the sector capacity constraints, even under dynamic weather conditions. Due to low computational complexity, our framework is suitable for a fleet of UAVs where decentralizing the routing process limits the workload demand on the airtraffic personnel.

A Multi-scale Analysis of the Atmospheric Conditions Associated with the Daytona Beach Tornado of Christmas Day, 2006

This case study describes a severe-storm event over Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina on 25 December 2006, with a particular focus on an F2 tornado that struck Daytona Beach, FL and caused over $50 million in damages. The severe weather occurred over a 12-h period and was associated with a deep upper-level trough and surface front moving through the southeastern U.S. Morning soundings over Florida showed low to moderate CAPE and strong vertical wind shear, consistent with seasonal composite tornadic soundings for the region. A quasi-linear convective system moved onshore near Tampa during the midmorning hours, the northern half of which accelerated and produced bow echoes that resulted in two tornadoes and nontornadic wind damage over Pasco, Sumter, and Lake Counties between 1620 and 1725 UTC. This portion of the line then moved into Volusia County and spawned F2 tornadoes in Deland and Daytona Beach after 1800 UTC. Data from the Melbourne National Weather Service Forecast Office’s Weather Surveillance Radar-1988D (WSR-88D), Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), and DAB Low Level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS) were integrated to analyze conditions at the east end of the DAB runway 7L/25R complex, where the tornado first appeared. The LLWAS is normally used by air traffic control personnel for monitoring airport wind-shear conditions. The 10-s LLWAS wind data filled critical temporal and spatial gaps in the WSR-88D and ASOS data, and captured evidence of strong winds and cyclonic curvature nearly coincident with the locations of the radar-identified velocity couplet and tornado itself.

The Potential Hazard Analysis Method of Glare for Photovoltaic near airports or within

With growing numbers of solar energy installations near airports or within, solar glare is becoming an increasing concern. The glare impact which is the potential hazard for pilots and air-traffic control personnel can range from discomfort to disability. First, a review of metrics used to determine safe retinal irradiances was presented. Metrics for both permanent eye damage and temporary after-image effects were included. A summary of safety standards is compiled from the literature to evaluate the potential hazards of calculated irradiances from glare. The impact factors of glare for photovoltaic near airports or within are analyzed. It has presented a new evaluation method based on bidirectional reflection distribution function (BRDF) to evaluate potential glint and glare hazards from specular reflected sunlight for solar Photovoltaic in this paper. The analytical models were then derived to calculate irradiances. Finally, a sample is provided for glare in the airport.

By looking at the growth of air transport has increased quite significantly, certainly not independent human resources needs to guide them in Air Traffic Control personnel. In this case one of the problems encountered in field of aviation is the imbalance between supply and demand on Ihe one hard, the growth of air transport have increased and on one side of the energv needs of ATC is not in accordance with the operation of the flight. In connection with this case was the result of the ability of the Aviation safety Techical Academy, in terms of manpower needs in Particular ATC Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, which now number 144 ATC personel, whereas the ideal number to 145 people personnel. However, the results of estimates / projections for 2015 amounted to 182 personnel required by the ATC.

Hearing Loss in Civilian Airline and Helicopter Pilots Compared to Air Traffic Control Personnel

In order to investigate possible hearing loss as a consequence of aviation noise, a comparative analysis of audiometric data from Norwegian Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel, airline (fixed-wing) pilots, and helicopter pilots was performed. The results may be of use in giving advice regarding preventive measures. Male ATC, airline, and helicopter pilots were selected randomly from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) medical files. There were 182 subjects included in the study: 50, 81, and 51 subjects for ATC, helicopter, and airline pilots, respectively. Two audiograms with a 2-3-yr interval were analyzed for each individual. Age correction was performed using data from ISO 7129. Threshold changes per year for the frequencies 3, 4, and 6 kHz were examined in particular after age correction. For all three groups, mean hearing threshold levels were above (worse than) ISO 7129 predictions for most frequencies. As expected, hearing thresholds increased with age in the group as a whole. Looking at the 3-, 4-, and 6-kHz frequencies in particular, all groups had small but highly significant increases in hearing thresholds at 4 kHz between the first and second audiogram. The mean hearing thresholds for this group of aviation personnel are higher than International Standard ISO-7129 would predict according to age. Highly significant changes in hearing threshold after age correction, indicating possible noise-induced hearing loss, were found in all groups at 4 kHz. The fact that helicopter pilots had similar hearing loss to their other aviation colleagues indicates that current hearing protection for these pilots is effective in counteracting the increased noise levels in helicopters.

Predicting Professional Success of Air Traffic Control Personnel From Their Personality Profile at Admission to Ab Initio Training

The usefulness of personality measures for predicting air traffic controllers' (ATCs) performance in addition to cognitive aptitudes was tested using NEO Personality Inventory (NEO–PI) results of 60 ATC candidates at admission to the training. Extroversion (E) and its facets Gregariousness (E2) and Positive Emotions (E6) were valid and useful negative predictors of performance over and above cognitive ability level. E, E2, and E6 added to the variance of success in career (8.2%, 12.6%, and 12.7%, respectively). E2 and E6 proved their usefulness for predicting supervisory ratings, adding significantly to the total variance (7.9% and 12.1%, respectively).

Describing main morbidity rate amongst Colombian civil aviation cockpit and air traffic control personnel. This was a cross-sectional study. A random sample of 1,059 records (pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers) was taken from Colombian aeronautical authority files. Identification, background, morbidity and limitation data was reviewed for each one. 68,2 % of the records concerned males. Average age was 37. 22,9 % of the sample had some medical antecedent recorded on their first certification. Alcohol consumption (occasional) was recorded for 17,1 % of the sample and 11,9 % were smokers. The main diagnoses made were: vision disorders (52,2 %), dyslipidemias (40,6 %), being overweight (37,5 %), having hearing loss (22,0 %), being healthy (14,0 %) and suffering from hypertension (8,1 %). Each group had the same diagnoses, but occurring in a different order. Others studies have found cardiovascular disease to be the main cause of morbidity amongst cockpit and air traffic control personnel. Vision disorders were the main disorder occurring in Colombia. We do not know if there is a predisposition amongst Colombians to suffer such morbidity. Cardiovascular risk factors were found in second place in Colombia, meaning that public health prevention and promotion countermeasures should be taken.

Birds have caused collision damage to aircraft and loss of human life for the past 60 years. Turbine-powered machines are more vulnerable to damage than those with piston engines. Higher speeds increase the damage. Habitat management, including reduction of available food, cover, and water, can decrease the attractiveness of airfields. Proper design can make airfield structures unusable by birds. Casual bird visitors can be driven from airfields by well-motivated, energetic people with equipment ranging from pyrotechnic devices to trained falcons. Birds aloft can be observed by radar; their movements can then be forecast and safer courses for aircraft described and used. Air traffic control personnel can be trained to use bird movement forecasts and real-time (i.e. directly observed) radar data on bird activity to guide aircraft to safer passage through the ‘feather curtain’. Costs of bird strikes can be reduced, as has been demonstrated over the past 10 years. Further improvements are possible and desirable.
