2012 election results

On 4 October 2012, AGU members completed voting for the 2013–2014 leadership term. Union officers, Board members, section and focus group officers, and student and early career representatives to the Council were elected. All members who joined or renewed their membership by 1 July 2012 were eligible to vote in this year's leadership election. The vote was held electronically, and access to voting was provided to all eligible voters for a period of 31 days. The voting was conducted by Survey and Ballot Systems, Inc. (SBS). SBS, which offers election planning and management services, provided unique login credentials and other support services for eligible voters throughout the election. Voting results were certified by SBS on 8 October and by the AGU Tellers Committee on 9 October. The overall participation rate was 21.9%, an increase over previous AGU elections.

AGU election FAQs

Many of you are aware that this is an election year, and I don't mean electing the next president of the United States! This is AGU's election year, and the polls are opening soon. Your vote matters. Eligible voters should vote, and now is the time to learn about the candidates. There are no TV ads, and the candidates won't be covered in the news. However, electing AGU leaders for the next term affects the future direction of the Union. Please take a few minutes to visit the election Web site (http://sites.agu.org/elections/) and review the candidate bios.

Final slate for AGU elections this fall

Your vote is important! This fall, AGU members will elect leaders for the next term (1 January 2013 to 31 December 2014). This issue of Eos provides details about the upcoming election and information on candidates for open AGU Board and Council positions as well as section and focus group secretary positions. All regular and student members who joined or renewed their membership by 1 July 2012 are eligible to vote in this year's election of AGU leaders. The election will be held electronically, and all members must have a valid e‐mail address on file at AGU to receive login credentials from the company conducting the election.

This special edition of Eos focuses on the individuals you will choose to lead the Union over the next 2–6 years. The candidates are featured in this issue. You will also find information on their responsibilities. What I want to emphasize is your opportunity to contribute to this process.Elections in scientific and engineering societies often are decided by only 10–20% of the members. AGU's elections have had similar participation. It's time to change that.

The candidates for this year's AGU election were all outstanding individuals and each would have served the Union well. The participation of all the candidates is an example of the kind of volunteerism that makes AGU strong. The new officers should be both congratulated and helped in meeting their responsibilities.

AGU's President‐Elect for 1988–1990 will be G. Brent Dalrymple of the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park. Marshall E. Moss will take the position of General Secretary, and Juan G. Roederer will remain Foreign Secretary. Moss and Roederer will serve through June 30, 1992. Dalrymple will be President‐ Elect until June 30, 1990, and President through June 30, 1992. The full election results are shown in Table 1Section officers will serve from July 1, 1988, to June 30, 1990. Each section's president‐ elect will serve 2 years before becoming president and will have full voting rights on the AGU Council for all 4 years.

At the 1977 Spring Meeting the AGU Council decided that beginning with the 1980 election, two candidates are to be nominated for each national and sectional office. At present the nominating committees for both national and sectional offices have the option of nominating either one or several candidates. For the 1978 election, most of the nominating committees have in fact nominated multiplecandidate slates, so in the forthcoming election we are already taking a significant step toward multiple‐candidate elections. The Council also looked at the lengths of terms for officers, and by law changes will be introduced to implement the recommendations voiced. In particular, the term of office of the General Secretary will be extended to four years to insure adequate continuity in this position.

President's page: Are AGU elections democratic?

Should we require more than one candidate for each position in AGU elections? A member has recently written to me in my capacity as Chairman of the Membership Committee expressing a strong opinion that we should, and in fact, there has been considerable debate on this question over the years. A few members complain each year about our uncontested elections, and for each member who complains there are probably many others who feel unhappy about the status quo. So we are concerned—especially since only 20% of the membership bothers to vote in Union elections. Does this small response reflect satisfaction with the way the AGU is being run, or does it reflect a lack of interest in a sterile election process without real choice? The Membership Committee is going to take a fresh look at this question and wants expressions of opinion pro and con from interested members.
