Promoting decent work in supply chains of the agrifood sector of Hass Avocado in Colombia: A Colombian MNE case study

Thanks to the production massification in the world coupled with the increase in global production chains, it is urgent to review from different points of view, perspectives and sectors how supply chains adopt strategies to promote and encourage fair, equitable and decent labour guarantees. this article addresses the case of the MNE Avofruit S.A.S. BIC - Cartama, currently the principal exporter of Hass avocado in Colombia, which promotes through different strategies adopted by its corporate governance, decent work in its supply chain, as well as in that of its allies. To contextualize the reality in the productive sector, an analysis of sources in which there is data related to employment in the Colombian countryside, in addition to interviews with the staff of the company analyzed as a case study who provide information for the documentation and analysis of the case. The findings reveal that this company, being a reference in the sector, is promoting decent work in its supply chain and that of its allies, as well as encouraging fairer guarantees in the Colombian agricultural sector, becoming an example to follow for other products in the agroindustry sector.

Digital Transformation in the Agri-food Sector: A Comparative Analysis of Industry 4.0 Innovations by Italian Sustainability Leaders

The agri-food sector is a key actor in the Italian economy and plays a crucial role in rescuing and accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, diverse sustainability challenges including environmental conservation, economic volatility, political changes and regulatory constraints affect the agri-food company’s competitiveness and their ability to face global sustainability challenges. Exploiting digital innovation is then essential. By facilitating more efficient management of resources, reducing waste and improving supply chain transparency, digital innovations contribute to more sustainable, inclusive and resilient agri-food systems. This paper aims to understand the ongoing digital transformation of the Italian agri-food sector through a comparative analysis of innovative practices by Italian agri-food companies that are recognized as sustainability leaders. Among the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies, sensors, blockchain, cyber security, and artificial intelligence appear to be the most adopted I4.0 solutions to help companies influence the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

Bacterial community in fresh fruits and vegetables sold in streets and open-air markets of Dakar, Senegal.

In the context of food transition, the agrifood sector has experienced increasingly strong demand for horticultural products. Fresh fruits and vegetables are mainly vehicles of microorganisms, including pathogens that cause human infections. Food safety and compliance with health standards in the fruits and vegetable value chain are significant concerns and multiple challenges, given the prevalence of foodborne pathologies in Southern countries, particularly in Senegal. This study aimed to describe the bacterial community and assess the microbiological quality of a range of fruits and vegetables sold on street stalls and open-air markets in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Samples purchased in seven sites were analyzed to isolate Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella spp. and Vibrio spp. Some primary samples with a positive microbiological culture were subjected to DNA extraction and subsequent metagenomic analysis. A total of 240 fresh fruit and vegetable samples were collected, including lettuce (n = 40), tomatoes (n = 40), mango slices (n = 40), onion slices (n = 40), mint leaves (n = 40), strawberries and grapes (each n = 20). Of these samples, 50.83% (122/240) and 60.41% (145/240) were contaminated with E. coli and Vibrio spp., respectively, while Salmonella was not isolated in any product. E. coli and Vibrio spp. contamination levels, 1.3 103 to 6 106 Colonies Forming Units per gram of sample (CFU/g) and 4.55 102 to 8.73 106CFU/g, respectively, were significantly above the thresholds acceptable for human consumption. The most contaminated samples were lettuce, with a prevalence of 98% (39/40) for E. coli and Vibrio spp. followed by mint leaves with 100% (40/40) and 93% (37/40) of the samples containing E. coli and Vibrio spp. respectively. Out of 46 samples sequenced, the metagenomic analysis revealed high contamination rates for E. coli, Vibrio spp. and Salmonella spp., with 100%, 67.39% and 93.47% of prevalence, respectively. On the other hand, the alpha diversity analysis shows high bacterial diversity in lettuce and mint leaf samples, while the beta diversity analysis highlighted the presence of two major clusters. Our results stress the need for a surveillance system that extends this investigation to a national scale while increasing the number of sampling sites and products analyzed.

Reliable and Resilient Wireless Communications in IoT-Based Smart Agriculture: A Case Study of Radio Wave Propagation in a Corn Field

In the past few years, one of the largest industries in the world, the agriculture sector, has faced many challenges, such as climate change and the depletion of limited natural resources. Smart Agriculture, based on IoT, is considered a transformative force that will play a crucial role in the further advancement of the agri-food sector. Furthermore, in IoT-based Smart Agriculture systems, radio wave propagation faces unique challenges (such as attenuation in vegetation and soil and multiple reflections) because of sensor nodes deployed in agriculture fields at or slightly above the ground level. In our study, we present, for the first time, several models (Multi-slope, Weissberger, and COST-235) suitable for planning radio coverage in a cornfield for Smart Agriculture applications. We received signal level measurements as a function of distance in a corn field (R3 corn stage) at 0.9 GHz and 2.4 GHz using two transmitting and two receiving antenna heights, with both horizontal and vertical polarization. The results indicate that radio wave propagation in a corn field is influenced not only by the surrounding environment (i.e., corn), but also by the antenna polarization and the positions of the transmitting and receiving antennas relative to the ground.

Assessing functional properties of diet protein hydrolysate and oil from fish waste on canine immune parameters, cardiac biomarkers, and fecal microbiota

Locally produced fish hydrolysate and oil from the agrifood sector comprises a sustainable solution both to the problem of fish waste disposal and to the petfood sector with potential benefits for the animal’s health. This study evaluated the effects of the dietary replacement of mainly imported shrimp hydrolysate (5%) and salmon oil (3%; control diet) with locally produced fish hydrolysate (5%) and oil (3.2%) obtained from fish waste (experimental diet) on systemic inflammation markers, adipokines levels, cardiac function and fecal microbiota of adult dogs. Samples and measurements were taken from a feeding trial conducted according to a crossover design with two diets (control and experimental diets), six adult Beagle dogs per diet and two periods of 6 weeks each. The experimental diet, with higher docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acids contents, decreased plasmatic triglycerides and the activity of angiotensin converting enzyme, also tending to decrease total cholesterol. No effects of diet were observed on serum levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, and IL-12/IL-23 p40, and of the serum levels of the anti-inflammatory adipokine adiponectin. Blood pressure, heart rate and echocardiographic measurements were similar between diets with the only exception of left atrial to aorta diameter ratio that was higher in dogs fed the experimental diet, but without clinical relevance. Diet did not significantly affect fecal immunoglobulin A concentration. Regarding fecal microbiome, Megasphaera was the most abundant genus, followed by Bifidobacterium, Fusobacterium, and Prevotella, being the relative abundances of Fusobacterium and Ileibacterium genera positively affected by the experimental diet. Overall, results from the performed short term trial suggest that shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil can be replaced by protein hydrolysate and oil from fish by-products without affecting systemic inflammatory markers, cardiac structure and function, but potentially benefiting bacterial genera associated with healthy microbiome. Considering the high DHA and EPA contents and the antioxidant properties of fish oil and hydrolysate, it would be worthwhile in the future to assess their long-term effects on inflammatory markers and their role in spontaneous canine cardiac diseases and to perform metabolomic and metagenomics analysis to elucidate the relevance of microbiota changes in the gut.

Investigating the Nexus Between Energy Transition Reporting Practices and Corporate Efficiency in the European Agri-Food Sector

The research paper investigates the nexus between energy transition reporting practices and corporate efficiency of listed European companies from the agri-food sector. The study relies on key energy-related and financial indicators and logistic regression analysis conducted on 219 EU business entities publishing their financial and non-financial reports between 2004 and 2023. Based on the distribution of financial metrics in the sample, we assumed that entities reporting data on energy transition, either partially or fully, could achieve higher profitability and simultaneously have lower liquidity than non-reporting companies. The panel data model indicated a strong relationship between the reporting status of a business entity, its revenue, and the time variable, demonstrating that the likelihood of providing information on energy transition was associated with the size of a company and increased systemically over time. However, further regression analysis revealed a lack of a persistent, significant relationship between the key financial indicators and the entities’ energy transition reporting status. Considering the substantial changes in the EU regulatory environment associated with introducing CSRD, we conclude that with increasing legal pressure over time, companies will gradually shift towards standardized industry-related reporting practices, resulting in more consistent and transparent evidence of their energy transition strategies.

Investigating the Routes to Produce Cellulose Fibers from Agro-Waste: An Upcycling Process

The agriculture and agri-food sectors produce substantial amounts of plant-based waste. This waste presents an identifiable research opportunity to develop methods for effectively eliminating and managing it in order to promote zero-waste and circular economies. Plant-based waste and by-products are acknowledged as valuable sources of bioactive compounds, including cellulose fibers. Direct application of these fibers in non-food sectors such as textiles can reduce the environmental impact of secondary raw materials. This review aims to provide an overview of novel concepts and modern technologies for efficiently utilizing plant-based waste and by-products from the agricultural and agro-industrial sectors to extract fibers for a variety of final applications, including the fashion industry. Two major routes are identified to produce cellulose fibers: the extraction and purification of natural cellulose fibers and the extraction and purification of cellulose pulp that is further processed into manmade cellulosic fibers. Scalability of experimental results at the laboratory or pilot level is a major barrier, so it is critical to develop closed-loop processes, apply standardization protocols, and conduct life cycle assessments and techno-economic analyses to facilitate large-scale implementation.

Study on Optimizing Inventory to Minimize Waste in the Fresh Produce Supply Chain

Abstract: The increasing demand for fresh produce, particularly greens, presents unique challenges in inventory management due to their short shelf life and susceptibility to spoilage. Inefficient management often results in significant waste, leading to financial losses for retailers and increased environmental burdens from the disposal of spoiled goods. Despite various strategies being employed in the agri-food sector, gaps remain in understanding how to optimize inventory levels to minimize waste at the retails level while maintaining high service levels for customers. This research aims to develop an inventory management model tailored to fresh produce that can mitigate these issues by balancing stock availability and minimizing wastage, particularly in large retail shops. To address the research problem, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model was developed, focusing on three service levels—90%, 92%, and 95%—to evaluate the trade-offs between customer satisfaction and total inventory costs. The model incorporates key constraints, including stock balance, shelf-life limitations, and demand satisfaction. The model was validated using actual data, including stock, sales, and wastage records for the month of August, 2024. The objective function aimed to minimize total costs, encompassing holding costs, wastage, and lost revenue. The findings indicate that higher service levels, while reducing stockouts, significantly increase costs due to excess inventory and waste. The most cost-effective solution was observed at the 90% service level, which balanced waste reduction and customer satisfaction. The study also emphasizes the importance of integrating total cost reduction and minimize wastage. Future work should focus on incorporating consumer behavior patterns and extending the model to multi-echelon inventory systems, which include both distribution centers and retail outlets, to capture a more holistic view of the supply chain.

The Great Versatility of Supercritical Fluids in Industrial Processes: A Focus on Chemical, Agri-Food and Energy Applications

Long a thermodynamic curiosity, supercritical fluids (SCFs) have gradually gained ground in today’s life, generating an increasing number of new, efficient processes in diverse industrial sectors and fueling active R&D programs. Indeed, the versatility of SCFs allows them to serve a wide variety of applications. The list includes not only food processing, biofuel production, extraction of biomolecules marketable as medicines, cosmetics and nutraceuticals, but also emerging technologies for the production of electrical power, based on supercritical or transcritical thermodynamic cycles. This jointly authored article will provide a review of important applications covered by our laboratories in the agri-food, chemical and energy sectors. We will then try to detect recent trends and outline future prospects.

NAVIGATING THE REGULATORY LANDSCAPE OF VOLUNTARY SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS IN INTERNATIONAL FOOD TRADE: A MULTILATERAL INTERPLAY - DOI: 10.12818/P.0304-2340.2024v85p171

Voluntary sustainability standards (VSSs) are non-mandatory criteria designed to foster sustainable practices throughout the global supply chain. These standards are particularly prevalent in the agri-food sector, where they aim to support wider public policy objectives such as sustainable food production, animal welfare, healthy lifestyle, and labour conditions. Significant challenges arises from the fact that VSSs, despite their voluntary nature, they often impose mandatory effect in the global supply chain. They also often lack easily-identifiable features of the product themselves. These creates systematic problems for the global food trade system, where conventional regulation address governmental measures on goods with specific inherent characteristics that can be clearly identified in the final product. This article explored the interrelationship among private VSSs, national regulations and international treaties within the agri-food industry. It highlights ambiguity surrounding the regulatory framework for VSSs under the WTO law, noting the absence of a consensus on how relevant provisions should be interpreted. Despite the diversity among various VSSs, VSSs, this article argues for the potential for harmonization and equivalence among VSSs. By aligning various VSSs and with technical regulations, it is possible to strike a balance between trade liberalization and promotion of sustainable practices.

Phytochemical characterization and valorization of Quercus ilex (west of Algeria)

<p><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";font-size:12pt;line-height:115%;"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";font-size:12pt;line-height:115%;" lang="EN-US">This project is part of the promotion of natural resources such as Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP). In order to assess the economic value of NTFP, this research focuses on the phytochemical analysis of holm oak (</span><em><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";font-size:12pt;line-height:115%;" lang="EN-US">Quercus ilex </span></em><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";font-size:12pt;line-height:115%;" lang="EN-US">L.) from the Terni region (Western Algeria). It focused on bioactive substances, particularly polyphenols. The method used consists of extracting the phenolic compounds by two methods which are maceration and ultrasound from the leaves and bark of this species. The quantity of these compounds is assessed spectrometrically and the antioxidant activity of the extracts in vitro using free radical scavenging and total antioxidant capacity assays. The results obtained indicate that maceration offers the best yield for extracting phenolic compounds from the leaves, with a yield of 10.74%. These results also showed that the extracts of holm oak leaves and bark are rich in phenolic compounds and have a content of total phenols (103,014±1,393 and 813.462±1.675 mg EAG/g DM), flavonoids (87.078±6.220 and 949.936±36.394 mg EC/g DM) and condensed tannins (57.194±12.447 and 940.195±20.417 mg EC/g DM). Regarding the antioxidant power, it is evident that all extracts have significant antioxidant capacity, and all have high free radical scavenging activity. The highest inhibition percents are 84.98±7.45% for the leaf extract and 83.15±9.27% for the bark extract. According to these results, holm oak contains a large quantity of polyphenols and antioxidant molecules. This information represents a natural source of antioxidants which remains to be exploited for future use in the agri-food and health sectors, within the broader framework of promoting the biodiversity of Algerian plants (NTFP).</span></p>

Genetic diversity, population structure, and phylogeny of insular Spanish pepper landraces (Capsicum annuum L.) through phenotyping and genotyping-by-sequencing.

Pepper (Capsicum spp.) is one of the most important crops worldwide. Understanding the species' genetic background is key to preserve agrodiversity on-farm, to contribute to a more diverse and resilient agrifood sector, and to find new sources of variation that could be useful in future breeding programs. In this regard, varietal groups bred in insular environments have gained special interest as they have evolved quite isolated from continental forms, with a limited genetic exchange. The present work explores the diversity of a plethora of Balearic landraces, corresponding to different local varietal types, through phenotyping and genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS). Mallorca and Eivissa landraces were phenotyped according to a comprehensive list of descriptors for plant, leaf, flower, fruit, pollen, and seed and were genotyped with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers; population structure and their patterns of diversity were studied. The results showed a considerable morphological diversity for most traits analyzed, within and between landraces. On the whole, in regard to genetic patterns, relatively low levels of heterozygosity and moderate genetic diversity for the studied landraces were found although some of them exhibited diverse patterns. The materials were not grouped in specific clusters associated with each island, but mainly according to varietal types. These findings can serve as the basis for studying divergent evolutionary patterns associated with the corresponding populations. Finally, the results can contribute to further elucidation of the genetic basis of Balearic landraces and serve as an inspiring case of study for other insular endemisms of cultivated species.

From Food Industry 4.0 to Food Industry 5.0: Identifying technological enablers and potential future applications in the food sector.

Although several food-related fields have yet to fully grasp the speed and breadth of the fourth industrial revolution (also known as Industry 4.0), growing literature from other sectors shows that Industry 5.0 (referring to the fifth industrial revolution) is already underway. Food Industry 4.0 has been characterized by the fusion of physical, digital, and biological advances in food science and technology, whereas future Food Industry 5.0 could be seen as a more holistic, multidisciplinary, and multidimensional approach. This review will focus on identifying potential enabling technologies of Industry 5.0 that could be harnessed to shape the future of food in the coming years. We will review the state-of-the-art studies on the use of innovative technologies in various food and agriculture applications over the last 5 years. In addition, opportunities and challenges will be highlighted, and future directions and conclusions will be drawn. Preliminary evidence suggests that Industry 5.0 is the outcome of an evolutionary process and not of a revolution, as is often claimed. Our results show that regenerative and/or conversational artificial intelligence, the Internet of Everything, miniaturized and nanosensors, 4D printing and beyond, cobots and advanced drones, edge computing, redactable blockchain, metaverse and immersive techniques, cyber-physical systems, digital twins, and sixth-generation wireless and beyond are likely to be among the main driving technologies of Food Industry 5.0. Although the framework, vision, and value of Industry 5.0 are becoming popular research topics in various academic and industrial fields, the agri-food sector has just started to embrace some aspects and dimensions of Industry 5.0.

Lean Manufacturing en la producción de alimentos: Revisión sistemática, análisis bibliométrico y propuesta de aplicación

In a changing environment, efficiency and adaptability are essential to improve business competitiveness. The present study analyzed the application of Lean Manufacturing in food production through a review of the scientific literature based in Scopus, using the PRISMA methodology and the Vosviewer and Bibliometrix software. From the bibliometric analysis, there is evidence of an increase in research on Lean Manufacturing in food companies since 2019, with an annual growth rate of 5.96%. Brazil and Peru stand out for their high scientific production, while Brazil and Belgium stand out in terms of citations. In addition, outstanding scientific collaboration between authors from South America and Asia is observed. Three relevant clusters were identified: principles, implementation tools and practical applications of Lean Manufacturing. The thematic mapping highlighted the concepts Cost Reduction, Process Monitoring, Six Sigma and Value Stream Mapping as the most prominent topics underlining the interest and applications in the scientific literature. The implementation of Lean Manufacturing in seven steps is proposed, facilitating the use of agile tools for process optimization and waste reduction in food companies. Lean Manufacturing contributes to improve the flow of products in the supply chain and to the sustainability of small and medium enterprises. Future research should focus on adapting Lean Manufacturing to various contexts and business models in the agri-food sector.

"Eat up. Save Earth." Alternative proteins and the myth of inevitable sustainability

The emerging agri-food tech sector promises to solve myriad environmental problems. This article considers the sociotechnical imaginaries that animate these claims. We focus on plant-based meat and dairy substitutes, or 'alternative proteins' (APs). To examine how APs are constructed as environmental solutions, we analyzed marketing materials, sustainability reports, and interviews. Our study illustrates how environmental metrics (Life Cycle Assessments) and corporate marketing make environmental issues legible to agri-industrial logics by reducing them to a narrow, technical issue: inefficient livestock. To critique this problem closure, we develop the concept of inevitable sustainability–where the increased adoption of a technology is equated with the assured reduction of environmental harm. We caution that APs support a neoliberal model of environmental governance that propagates apolitical and deterritorialized solutions. To reflect on the limits of agri food tech environmental fixes, we discuss three myths surrounding inevitable sustainability. We outline this concept's applicability to similar instances of environmental solutionism in agri-food tech and beyond.

Circumstantial factors and local collaboration determine farmers' perceptions and practices on circular bioeconomy – examples from Southern Sweden

Economic systems that rely on linear growth and non-renewable resources have enhanced environmental impact of agricultural practices at a global scale. The literature portrays an urgent need to align agricultural practices with economic pathways that utilize and regenerate biological resources more. Circular bioeconomy promotes means for the agri-food sector to close, narrow, and slow biological resource flows. As farmers have a pivotal role in facilitating a transition to circular bioeconomy, this study analyzes farmers' perceptions and practices related to circular bioeconomy. Based on 11 semi-structured interviews with Swedish farmers the study highlights the role of pea cultivation as a tangible means to facilitate circular bioeconomy within the agri-food sector. The empirical findings of the study depict how farmers facilitate circular bioeconomy by closing, slowing and narrowing biological flows through waste management practices, technological means, and regenerative practices. The overarching results show how circumstantial factors such as inflation, market demand and regulations influence farmers perceptions and practices on circular bioeconomy, and how local networks and collaboration can facilitate cascading use and valorization of waste and by-products.

The dual role of blockchain in mediating credence attributes and moderating sensing capabilities in the wine sector

Purpose This study aims to investigate the dynamic capabilities of wineries, focusing on sensing and its role in enabling digital innovation. Furthermore, it explores the role of blockchain technology (BCT) in validating credence attributes of wine, emphasising blockchain as a strategic asset that enhances the ability of wineries to innovate and respond to changing market conditions. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts an exploratory approach based on a longitudinal, single-case study of the Argentinian Costaflores Organic Winery. Findings Findings reveal that integrating digital disruptive innovations such as blockchain can strategically position wineries to better meet emerging consumer preferences and market trends. Blockchain simultaneously acts as both a mediator and a moderator. As a mediator, it facilitates the validation of credence attributes of wine such as authenticity and sustainability, enhancing customer trust and loyalty. As a moderator, it influences the strength and effectiveness of the relationship between sensing and innovation capabilities. This enables wineries to more effectively respond to changing consumer requirements and market trends and improve operational performance. Research limitations/implications The study was limited by its focus on a single case study of the Argentinian Costaflores Organic Winery, which may affect the generalisability of the findings. However, the study provides valuable insights into the strategic adaptation and competitive positioning of wineries in response to the continuing market challenges. It significantly contributes to the understanding of integrating digital disruptive innovations as strategic assets in the agri-food sector, particularly in the wine sector. Originality/value This study addresses a significant research gap by exploring how BCT facilitates the organisation of sensing capabilities. It contributes to the understanding of how the wineries’ sensing capabilities both influence and are influenced by the adoption of BCT, particularly in the context of innovation enabling and improved operational performance.

In-tube extraction dynamic headspace coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the sensitive analysis of volatile compounds in aqueous samples

Aim: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often human-made contaminants used and generated in the manufacturing of numerous products, presenting notable environmental and health hazards. Therefore, the development of sensitive and reliable analytical methods is crucial for their detection with accuracy, timeliness, and automation capabilities. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the suitability of the in-tube extraction dynamic headspace (ITEX-DHS) sampling method for the gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) compounds in aqueous matrices. It emphasizes the method’s metrological reliability and innovative approach to precisely determining VOCs in aqueous environments providing a tool to prevent contamination of the agrifood sector. Methods: Following the optimization of various experimental parameters, including salt incorporation and adjustments of both dry purging and desorption conditions. The method’s performance was evaluated for repeatability, reproducibility, and robustness. Results: Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were for all substances determined lower than 50 and 100 ng/L, respectively. Average relative standard deviations below 5% were achieved for all analytes, with recovery rates ranging between 93% and 101%. Subsequently, the method was applied for the determination of BTEX in one hundred groundwater samples. The findings revealed that the BTEX levels were below the LOD in 84.2% of samples. However, in the remaining samples, more than one compound was detected at concentrations higher than the LOQ. Conclusions: The ITEX method emerges as a highly favorable alternative to both solid phase microextraction (SPME) and purge and trap (P & T) methods for determining BTEX in aqueous samples, providing significant advantages. Its strengths lie in its increased robustness, extended trap lifespan, and enhanced sensitivity, underscoring its superior performance in VOC analysis. The total analytical method allows the sensitive and robust determination of VOC.

Ensuring sustainability has increasingly become a significant concern not only in aquaculture but in the general agrifood sector. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate pathways to feed substitutes/best practices to enhance aquaculture sustainability. The application of fungi in aquaculture provides innovative methods to enhance the sustainability and productivity of aquaculture. Fungi play numerous roles in aquaculture, including growth, immunity enhancement and disease resistance. They also play a role in bioremediation of waste and bioflocculation. The application of fungi improves the suitability and utilization of terrestrial plant ingredients in aquaculture by reducing the fibre fractions and anti-nutritional factors and increasing the nutrients and mineral contents of plant ingredients. Fungi are good flotation agents and can enhance the buoyancy of aquafeed. Pigments from fungi enhance the colouration of fish fillets, making them more attractive to consumers. This paper, via the relevant literature, explores the multifaceted roles of fungi in aquaculture, emphasizing their potential to transform aquaculture through environmentally friendly and sustainable techniques. The effectiveness of fungi in reducing fibre fractions and enhancing nutrient availability is influenced by the duration of fermentation and the dosage administered, which may differ for various feed ingredients, making it difficult for most aquaculture farmers to apply fungi approximately. Therefore, the most effective dosage and fermentation duration for each feed ingredient should be investigated.
