Italian guidelines for age range and test interval in breast cancer screening programmes: GRADE-ADOLOPMENT of the European guidelines.

A guideline panel formulated a set of recommendations for breast cancer screening and diagnosis to implement clinical activities in Italy in alignment with the European Breast Cancer Guidelines on Screening and Diagnosis (European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer-ECIBC). The panel issued national recommendations through adopting, adapting, and/or developing recommendations from the European guidelines (ADOLOPMENT approach). This process utilizes the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) evidence to decision (EtD) framework. An additional PubMed search was conducted using search terms specific to Italy to tailor the EU guidelines to the national context. Nine articles were included as contextual evidence in the EtD. A total of 13 recommendations were finalized, either adapted or adopted to suit the national context. Organized breast cancer screening is strongly recommended for women aged 50-69 every 2 years, and it is conditionally recommended every 3 years for women aged 70-74, as well as every 1 or 2 years for women aged 45-49. Annual mammography received a strong recommendation against for women aged 50 and older. Developing shared national guidelines for the management of mammography screening will improve the standardization of processes across all settings, thereby promoting health equity.

Study on Suitability Evaluation Method of Non-Metallic Seals in Long Distance Hydrogen-Doped Natural Gas Pipelines

Hydrogen doping using existing natural gas pipelines is a promising solution for hydrogen transportation. A large number of non-metallic seals are currently used in long-distance natural gas pipelines. Compared with metallic seals, non-metallic seals have the advantages of corrosion resistance, light weight, and easy processing, which can improve the safety and economy of pipelines. In order to ensure the long-term safe use of seals in hydrogen-doped natural gas pipelines, this paper selects the non-metallic seals commonly used in long-distance natural gas pipelines and carries out the hydrogen-doped sealing test, hydrogen-doped aging test, and hydrogen-doped anti-explosion test on the non-metallic seals under the conditions of different hydrogen-doped ratios. At the same time, combined with the actual working conditions of a hydrogen-doped natural gas pipeline, the external environment, and other factors, the applicability evaluation index system was established, and the applicability evaluation model based on hydrogen-doped physical and chemical properties, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, and the structural entropy weight method was developed and applied in the field. The results show that the evaluation result of nitrile rubber in soft seals is 1.7845, and the evaluation result of graphite-polytetrafluoroethylene material in hard seals is 1.5988, and both of them are at a good level. This paper provides technical support and judging strategies for the selection of non-metallic sealing materials for hydrogen-doped natural gas pipelines.

Evaluation of Field Performance of Groundnut Varieties through Different Vigour Tests

A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the field performance of groundnut varieties through different vigour tests during Rabi, 2023-24 at S.V. Agricultural College, Tirupati, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Andhra Pradesh. The experimental material consisted of 10 groundnut varieties Narayani, Dharani, Dheeraj, TCGS-1694, Nithya Haritha, Kadiri-9, Kadiri-6, Kadiri Amaravathi, Kadiri-1812 and TAG-24 collected from different sources. In the preliminary experiment seed multiplication was done and the multiplied seed was used for conducting six vigour tests namely Germination test, speed of germination test, Seedling vigour index-Ⅰ, Seedling vigour index-Ⅱ, Accelerated ageing test, Electrical conductivity test in the laboratory using Completely Randomised Design with four replications. The multiplied seed was used for evaluating field performance using Randomised block design with three replications. Significant differences were found among the varieties based on vigour levels. Results with respect to field experiment showed that growth parameters i.e. field emergence percentage, days to 50 % flowering, days to maturity, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, pod yield per plant, kernel yield per plant, pod yield per plot, plant height, shelling percentage, 100 seed weight and harvest index varied significantly among different varieties based on different vigour levels. Varieties with higher vigour had shown higher field emergence percentage. Among the ten varieties Kadiri-6 had shown highest field emergence percentage. Significant correlation was observed among laboratory and field experiments. Vigorous varieties were able to perform better in terms of some of the field parameters and among all the vigour tests performed speed of germination test had high correlation with field emergence.

Evaluation of the Properties and Compositions of Blended Bio-jet Fuels Derived from Fast Pyrolysis Bio-oil made from Wood According to Aging Test

AbstractThe aviation industry has set ambitious goals for reducing carbon emissions, with the International Civil Aviation Organization targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Bio-jet fuel is expected to play a crucial role in achieving this target, and the demand for bio-jet fuel is projected to rapidly increase. Bio-oil from fast pyrolysis of lignin, such as waste wood, is considered a promising alternative for production of bio-jet fuel through processes such as hydrodeoxygenation. In this study, the physical properties and compositions of bio-jet fuel produced from wood-derived pyrolysis bio-oil blended with petroleum-based jet fuel as well as their changes during 16 weeks storage were investigated. Consistently, 0%, 10%, 50%, and 100% blended bio-jet fuels were prepared. After 16 weeks of aging, the total acid number of the all-blended bio-jet fuel showed a sharp increase from 12 weeks, reaching over 0.1 mg KOH/g. Additionally, kinematic viscosity showed a steady increase over 16 weeks whereas oxidative stability decreased by approximately 20% at 16 weeks for the 100% bio-jet fuel alone. The final boiling point increased by up to 20% in higher blends of bio-jet fuel and the average molecular weight increased. Bio-jet fuel has a high olefin content, which can further increase during storage, leading to a decrease in the combustion characteristics. This study suggests that using up to 10% the bio-jet fuel in aircraft is safe considering storage stability, but further research is required to confirm this finding.

Comparison Between Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty on Short-Term Performance-Based Outcomes and Factors Associated with the Improvement of Gait Function During Post-Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation

Background: Data on the differences in functional recovery between inpatient rehabilitation for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are lacking, and the factors influencing the improvement of short-term functional mobility remain unknown. In this study, we compared the short-term functional outcomes of both procedures and identified early postoperative predictors of physical function gain during post-acute rehabilitation. Methods: A total of 435 patients who underwent THA and TKA were included. The main outcomes were knee extension strength, the motor component of the Functional Independence Measure, Numerical Rating Scale, 10 Meter Walk Test, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and the Berg Balance Scale. The recovery process and rehabilitation outcomes were compared between patients with THA and TKA. Additionally, predictors related to physical performance improvement were examined for each procedure. Results: Patients with THA and TKA achieved significant short-term functional recovery after multidisciplinary rehabilitation (time; p < 0.001). However, the pain score was higher at discharge in patients with TKA (p < 0.001). Age (β: −0.264, p = 0.009) and TUG test (β: −0.884, p < 0.001) in THA, and non-operated knee extension strength (β: 0.234, p = 0.016) and TUG test (β: −0.783, p < 0.001) in TKA were significant early postoperative predictors of functional mobility. Conclusions: Multidisciplinary rehabilitation was beneficial for functional improvement in patients with THA and TKA despite persistent pain at discharge after TKA. Baseline functional levels in both groups and non-operated knee extension strength in TKA can be useful performance-based predictors of short-term gait function improvement.

Factors affecting the syncopal episodes in pediatric vasovagal syncope.

To investigate factors that influence the syncopal episodes in pediatric vasovagal syncope (VVS). A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 2908 children who were diagnosed with VVS for the first time between January 2001 and February 2023. The study examined the linear relationships among age, sex, height, weight, heart rate (HR), blood pressure, hemodynamic type, and head-up tilt test (HUTT) mode in relation to the onset of syncope. (1) Comparative analysis of intergroup differences revealed statistically significant variations in sex, age, height, weight, HR, systolic blood pressure, hemodynamic classification, and HUTT mode among syncopal episodes groups (P < 0.05); (2) Univariate analysis identified age, female, height, weight, VVS-cardioinhibited type (VVS-CI), VVS-mixed type (VVS-M) as potential risk factors for syncope episodes. Conversely, HR and sublingual nitroglycerin HUTT (SNHUT) emerged as potential protective factors against syncope episodes. (3) Multivariate analysis indicated that the frequency of syncope episodes increased by 0.27/0.02 for each unit increase in age/weight. When females compared to males and VVS-CI and VVS-M compared to VVS-vasoinhibited type (VVS-VI), the frequency of syncope episodes increased by 1.36, 0.53, and 0.66 respectively. Furthermore, SNHUT was associated with a reduction in the number of syncope episodes by 0.34 relative to basic HUTT. Female, age, weight, VVS-CI, and VVS-M were identified as independent risk factors for syncopal episodes, while SNHUT was recognized as an independent protective factor against syncopal episodes.

A Diphosphonic Acid-Based Interlayer for Highly Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells.

We investigate an interlayer of 6,6'-bis(4-(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino)phenyl)-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-(2,2'-diyl)bis(oxy)bis(propane-3,1-diyl)bis(phosphonic acid) (BINOL-PA) with undoped poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA) coverage. The incorporation of the 1,10-bi-2-naphthol central core enhances π-π stacking and reduces charge recombination at the interface. Compared to PTAA alone (0.95 eV), BINOL-PA/PTAA exhibits a shorter distance from the Fermi energy (EF) to the valence-band maximum (VBM) (0.36 eV). Two phosphoric acid units in BINOL-PA fine-tune the molecular dipoles. Theoretical calculations reveal electrostatic surface potential differences between BINOL-PA and PTAA in their backbone structure. Open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results suggest suppressed interface recombination. The photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE), short-circuit current density (JSC), open-circuit voltage (VOC), and fill factor (FF) for the BINOL-PA/PTAA device are measured as 21.02%, 22.67 mA cm-2, 1.12 V, and 82.8%, respectively, all higher than those achieved by the PTAA device with a PCE of 18%. BINOL-PA/PTAA significantly elevates VOC and FF values compared with dopant-free PTAA alone. The champion device retains over 89% of its initial PCE after being exposed to an ambient environment without encapsulation for more than 30 days. The thermal aging test conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere demonstrates that the efficiency retention rate for BINOL-PA/PTAA displays 60% of its initial efficiency after 1500 h.

Cryodehydration applied to bovine fetal hearts: A model for studying cardiac organogenesis.

The study aimed to standardize the cryodehydration technique for bovine fetal hearts, focusing on optimizing protocols for each developmental stage to preserve morphological characteristics. We analyzed 29 bovine fetal hearts categorized into early, middle, and late developmental stages. These hearts underwent cryodehydration until a 60%-70% reduction in original fluid volume was achieved. Biometric data were recorded and statistically analyzed using Pearson correlation tests for age versus weight and age versus number of cryodehydration sessions. Morphometric comparisons before and after cryodehydration were performed using paired t-tests. In Group I, hearts exhibited well-defined structures, including the atrium cordis, ventriculus cordis, auricula atrii, aorta, truncus pulmonalis, and ramus coronaries arteria, which were preserved in Groups II and III. Additionally, in Group I the heart had a conical or flat apex cordis, whereas those in Groups II and III had a more pronounced apex. The average number of cryodehydration sessions required was 9.38 (±1.2) days for Group I, 12.37 (±1.4) days for Group II, and 15 days for Group III. A positive correlation was found between age and sample weight, indicating that more developed hearts were heavier. Similarly, there was a positive correlation between gestational age and the number of cryodehydration sessions, suggesting that more advanced stages required more cryodehydration sessions. Paired t-tests demonstrated high statistical significance in the morphometric parameters before and after cryodehydration, indicating a loss of mass during dehydration. However, there was no alteration in the macroscopic structure of the hearts, which remained morphologically preserved. In conclusion, cryodehydration shows promise for preserving and analyzing the external morphological characteristics of bovine fetal cardiac development. It also provides lightweight, odorless, and easy-to-handle specimens ideal for detailed morphological studies and offers a unique perspective for investigating cardiac morphology in biological research contexts.

Frequency of internet use, economic income, and health of the population—comparative analysis of urban and rural areas based on Chinese General Social Survey

People’s health is one of the important supports for China’s economic development. This study uses the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) data to empirically test the impact of residents’ Internet use frequency and economic income on residents’ health level, and analyzes the differences between urban and rural areas. The empirical test results show that, firstly, the frequency of Internet use can promote the health level of residents, and the promotion effect of Internet use frequency on the health level of rural residents is higher than that of urban residents; Secondly, economic income has a positive promoting effect on the health level of the entire sample of residents, but in urban samples, the regression between economic income and residents’ health level is not significant. Third, in the heterogeneity test of region, gender and age, it is found that the impact of residents’ Internet use frequency and economic income on residents’ health level also has urban–rural differences. Based on this, this study suggests that the government can continue to make efforts to further promote the health level of residents by improving the Internet penetration rate, strengthening the use of Internet skills, carrying out Internet professional skills training and promoting the high-quality development of Internet content.

On safety of swelled commercial lithium-ion batteries: A study on aging, swelling, and abuse tests

Lithium-ion battery technology has advanced significantly, making these power sources essential for portable electronic devices such as smartphones. In 2023, global smartphone shipments reached nearly 1.2 billion units, underscoring the widespread reliance on these batteries. However, as batteries age, they may swell and potentially pose explosion risks. To investigate the safety of swollen batteries, this study conducts accelerated aging and swelling tests on lithium-ion batteries from five leading brands, which together represent over half of the global smartphone market share. The research involves a series of comprehensive tests, including Accelerated Rate Calorimeters (ARC) test, mechanical, electrical, and thermal abuse tests in accordance with Chinese national standards, as well as gas composition and theoretical flammability analyses on both new and swollen batteries. The findings indicate that swollen batteries generally exhibit safer behavior under floating charging conditions, and both new and swollen batteries pass the abuse tests within the standard framework. This study suggests that the safety of swollen lithium-ion batteries cannot be categorically labeled as dangerous or safe and should be assessed within the context of specific environments.

A Holistic View of Asphalt Binder Aging under Ultraviolet Conditions: Chemical, Structural, and Rheological Characterization

Asphalt, as a key binder material in road construction, is susceptible to ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced aging, leading to embrittlement and reduced durability. Despite the significance of UV aging, research in this area remains limited compared to that on thermal aging. This paper comprehensively reviews the current state of research on UV aging in asphalt, focusing on its mechanism, evaluation indicators, and methods to delay or avoid UV aging. The structural components, rheological properties, and aging mechanisms of asphalt are discussed. Various UV aging simulation methods, including the use of UV chambers and accelerated aging tests, are presented along with their evaluation tests such as dynamic shear rheometry, rutting tests, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and bending beam rheology. Key indicators used to assess UV aging, including physical properties, rheological parameters, and chemical composition changes, are summarized. The mechanisms underlying UV aging, particularly the changes in asphalt’s structural components and rheological properties, are examined. The impact of factors like radiation intensity, temperature, chemical composition, and asphalt film thickness on UV aging is discussed. Additionally, various additives and modifiers, including modified bitumen, UV shielding agents, UV absorbers, antioxidants, and nanomodifiers, are reviewed for their potential to mitigate UV aging. This paper concludes by highlighting the challenges in developing standardized test equipment and evaluation criteria, the limitations of organic modifiers, and the need for further research on nanomaterials to improve asphalt’s UV aging resistance.

The Effect of Air Humidity on the Performance of DC Link Capacitor Components

DC link capacitors (DCLCs) are key devices in converters. The relative humidity affects the performance of the elements of a DCLC. Currently, there are relatively few studies on the effect of relative humidity on the electrical characteristics of the elements of DCLCs during the production process. This study describes the effects and the control of the relative humidity in the production process. For this purpose, a DCLC component withstand voltage test platform and a DCLC component aging test platform were established. The voltage withstand tests were conducted during different processes and at different relative humidities, and life aging tests were conducted at different relative humidities and different storage times. The results show that after the winding and metal-spraying processes, the voltage withstand levels of the components stored at 30% RH, 60% RH, and 80% RH were very close to that of the components at 3000 VDC; after the heat-setting process, the voltage withstand levels of the components stored at 30% RH, 60% RH, and 80% RH showed a decreasing tendency compared with the level of the components at 3000 VDC. Regarding the samples, after the heat-setting process, stored at 30% RH and 60% RH for 24 h, 96 h, 168 h, 240 h, and 336 h and 2000 h of the aging tests, the capacitance decreases monotonically as the storage time is increased but never exceeds 3%, and the capacitance change decreases as the relative humidity increases. This study can provide important guidance for the humidity control of various processes in the production of DCLCs.

Patch test results to the Spanish baseline patch test series according to age groups: A multicentric prospective study from 2019 to 2023.

Patch test results may be influenced by age-related factors. However, there is still discordant evidence between age and patch test results. We aim to evaluate the patch test results reflecting skin sensitisation, their relevance and association with clinical features by age group. Prospective multicentric study of all patients patch tested with the Spanish baseline series in participating centres. Age groups were pre-defined as children (0- to 11-years), adolescents (12- to 18-years), young adults (19- to 30-years), middle-aged adults (31- to 65-years) and older adults (≥66-years). Occurrence of sensitisation, relevance and clinical features were compared by age group. Factors associated with skin sensitisation were investigated with multivariate logistic regression. A total of 13 368 patients were patch-tested. Differences in positive patch test results and relevance by age were detected with the highest proportion in middle-aged adults. Age-related trend differences were found for nickel, potassium dichromate, caines, colophony, Myroxylon pereirae resin, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and limonene hydroperoxide. The multivariate logistic analysis (adjusted for sex, atopic dermatitis, body location and occupational dermatitis) showed an association between the age group of 31-65 (OR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.26-1.58) and above 66-years (OR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.01-1.32) with a higher proportion of positive results, compared with young adults. Positive patch test results vary according to age, with the highest occurrence in middle-aged adults. Most haptens did not present age-related differences, reinforcing the use of baseline series regardless of age.

Durability Investigation of Ultra-Thin Polyurethane Wearing Course for Asphalt Pavement

In this study, a wear-resistant ultra-thin wear layer was fabricated with polyurethane as an adhesive to investigate its durability for pavement applications. Its road performance was investigated based on indoor tests. First, the abrasion test was performed using a tire–pavement dynamic friction analyzer (TDFA), and the surface elevation information of the wear layer was obtained by laser profile scanning. The relationship between the anti-skid properties of the wear layer and the macro-texture was analyzed. Second, a Fourier infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope were employed to analyze the evolution of polyurethane aging properties in the pull-out test and accelerated ultraviolet (UV) aging test. The results showed that the mean profile depth (MPD), arithmetic mean wavelength of contour (λa), surface wear index (SBI), stage mass loss rate (σ), and total stage mass loss rate (ω) of the abrasive layer aggregate had significant multivariate quadratic polynomial relationships with the skidding performance of the abrasive layer. The tensile strength of the polyurethane ultra-thin abrasive layer decreased by only 2.59% after 16 days of UV aging, indicating a minimal effect of UV action on the aggregate and structural spalling of the polyurethane abrasive layer.

Insight on physical–mechanical properties of one-part alkali-activated materials based on volcanic deposits of Mt. Etna (Italy) and their durability against ageing tests

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in one-part alkali-activated materials, which utilize solid-form alkali activators, within the construction industry. This approach is becoming popular due to its simpler and safer application for cast-in-situ purposes, as compared to the conventional two-part method. At this purpose, we have pioneered the use of volcanic deposits of Mt. Etna volcano (Italy) as precursor for the synthesis of a unique one-part formulation. This was done to assess its performance against both traditional and two-part alkali-activated materials. The study employed a comprehensive range of investigative techniques including X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, hydric tests, mercury intrusion porosimetry, ultrasound, infrared thermography, spectrophotometry, contact angle measurements, uniaxial compressive strength tests, as well as durability tests by salt crystallization and freeze–thaw cycles. The key findings on the studied samples are as follows: i) small size of pores and slow absorption-drying cycles; ii) satisfying compactness and uniaxial compressive strengths for building and restoration interventions; iii) high hydrophily of the surfaces; iv) lower heating dispersion than traditional materials; v) significant damage at the end of the salt crystallization test; vi) excellent resistance to freeze–thaw cycles. These newly developed materials hold promises as environmentally friendly options for construction applications. They offer a simplified mixing process in contrast to the conventional two-part alkali-activated materials, thus providing an added advantage to this class of materials.

Hygrothermal aging and durability prediction of 3D-printed hybrid fiber composites with continuous carbon/Kevlar-fiber and short carbon-fiber

Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Polymers (HFRP) have excellent mechanical properties. However, preparation with 3D-printing technology is prone to hydrothermal aging compared to conventional method. Currently, complex hygrothermal aging and degradation mechanisms of 3D-printed HFRP are still unclear. Thus, hygrothermal aging and durability prediction of 3D-printed HFRP with continuous carbon/Kevlar-fiber and short carbon-fiber are studied, which considers four typical stacking sequences. All experimental samples are manufactured by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D-printing. The artificial accelerate aging testing is conducted on samples at different times, and then flexural testing is adopted to evaluate the residual mechanical properties and failure modes. The results show that the stacking sequence significantly influences the moisture absorption behaviors, and [OC4O2K4]S absorbed more moisture than [OK4O2C4]S. During the aging process, the flexural properties of the 3D-printed HFRP first decrease rapidly and then keep stable. Among them, [OK4O2C4]S have the fastest degradation but possessed the highest residual strength. OC8O4K8O possess the slowest degradation but have a lower residual strength. The morphologies and micro failure modes/mechanisms are analyzed to explain the significant mechanical degradation. Finally, the Arrhenius relationship is adopted to accurately predict and analyze the degradation evolution process of specimens. This work offers a novel perspective on the hygrothermal aging and durability of 3D-printed HFRP.

No significant difference in skin contamination during anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with and without preoperative skin cleaning.

This prospective study aimed to assess whether preoperative antiseptic skin cleansing reduces bacterial contamination and surgical site infections (SSI) following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). We hypothesized that antiseptic cleaning would lower bacterial load, reducing contamination and early infections. One hundred and nineteen patients scheduled for ACLR were included in this prospective, nonrandomized study. Individuals were divided into two groups. Patients in the intervention group applied octenisan® wash lotion daily for three days before surgery and used the wash solution instead of their usual shower gel. Additionally, they swiped their leg with octenisan® soaked gloves on the morning of the operation. The control group followed their usual wash routine with no specific instructions. Fluid samples were taken before surgery from the irrigation bag and at 15-min intervals from the reservoir of the sterile surgical drape during the procedure. Suture material used for the ACL graft and meniscus repair were also collected for testing. The samples were subjected to a 14-day incubation period. Follow-up included outpatient visits at 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 6 months with a final evaluation at 12 months. Contamination rates showed no significant difference between the control and intervention groups. The mean contamination rate in the control group was 6.4% (n = 22) and 6.6% (n = 24) in the intervention group (p = 0.28). At 12-month follow-up, 110 out of 119 participants were included (52 control, 58 intervention). T tests for age (p = 0.19), BMI (p = 0.66), and surgery duration (p = 0.38) showed no significant differences. No early SSI were observed in either group postoperatively. Our results indicate that the use of antiseptic wash lotion and gloves does not influence the risk of bacterial contamination during surgery. Level III.

Effects of Sodium Chloride on PEMFC Durability at a Concentration Close to that of a Marine Environment

The marine application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) requires special attention due to sea salt aerosols and atmospheric pollutants, susceptible to degrade these systems and induce performance losses. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to identify the performance losses of PEMFCs due to sodium chloride (NaCl) pollution similar to that of the marine environment. A 641 h ageing test with a NaCl concentration in air of 120 μg.m‒3 was carried out on a five cells stack of 220 cm2. The results reveal a key mechanism for reversible performance loss, namely the deposition of salt particles in the channels and on the surface of the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL). This can lead to the complete shutdown of a cell. Nonetheless, this contamination did not induce significant irreversible performance losses as the restarts of the stack cause the salt particles to dissolve. An overall degradation rate of 8 μV·h‒1, similar to that of the baseline without NaCl contamination, is observed.

Impregnate Carbonation: CO2-Guided In Situ Growth of Robust Superhydrophobic Structures on Concrete Surfaces.

Superhydrophobic surfaces applying on concrete can greatly improve the durability of concrete by preventing the damage from water. However, traditional design of superhydrophobic concrete surfaces by external coating encounters to problems of flaking and poor surface robustness, while that by adding hydrophobic agents or particles faces the challenges of strength damage of concrete. Drawing inspiration from the carbonation phenomenon of concrete, here a new design of in situ growing superhydrophobic structures on concrete is proposed: The concrete sample is impregnated into Mg2+-containing silane-water system with continuous CO2 injection. The contact angle of the concrete surface achieves 171.9° without obvious strength decrease after 120 min, which are mainly attributed to the formation of CaxMg1-xCO3 crystals with micro-nano-structures and the reduction of carbonates surface energy by silane. This superhydrophobic concrete structure can be divided into a superhydrophobic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic three layers structure, providing the stable water-proof protection under mechanical fatigue, capillary water absorption, UV aging, sulfate attack, and impurity water impact tests due to the in situ growing robust superhydrophobic structures. Furthermore, it captures 29.80gm-2 CO2 during the reaction process, providing new insights for the design and preparation of eco-friendly superhydrophobic concrete.

Barriers to participation by minorities in oncology clinical trials.

68 Background: Clinical trial (CT) diversity remains low despite numerous countermeasures. We investigated barriers to CT participation in our racially/ethnically diverse cancer population while considering loco-regional differences. Methods: An IRB-approved 32-item survey was administered to eligible patients in English or Spanish depending on patient preference. Comparisons were made between groups with ANOVA for age and chi square tests for categorical variables using an alpha of 0.05. Results: 276 responses were analyzed. Spanish-speaking (“Spanish”) respondents were younger, with 29.5% between 31–49 yrs. [vs. 13.3% of English-speaking (“English”) respondents] and 15.8% were &gt;70 yrs. (vs. 28.2%; p=0.004). 41.1% and 27.4% of Spanish respondents were single and married, respectively, compared to 19.9% and 49.7% of English respondents (p&lt;0.001). 32.7% of Spanish respondents had attended and/or graduated college vs. 72.1% of English respondents. 79.6% of English respondents were born in one of the 50 US states (vs. 8.4% of Spanish respondents), while 58.9% of Spanish respondents were born in Puerto Rico. 4.2% of Spanish respondents preferentially spoke English at home. There was no association between CT awareness/invitation to participate and previous diagnosis of cancer, nor between CT awareness and place of birth. However, differences between English and Spanish respondents were observed (Table). Additionally, insurance coverage showed a significant difference among all respondents, with respondents on private insurance more likely to have heard about CT than those with public or no insurance (51.3% vs. 16.4%, resp.; p&lt;0.001). Invitation to participate in CT was higher in the English group (p=0.002), although there was no difference among Hispanics who spoke English at home (p=0.420). Place of birth remained statistically significant for CT participation; 87.5% of those offered were US born (p=0.020). Conclusions: CT awareness continues to be higher in English-speaking cancer patients, and those with private insurance. Inequalities appear to be minimizing in Hispanics with certain acculturation degree. However, CT offering continues to exclude Hispanics, even those who have adopted English as primary language, regardless of place of birth. These findings support efforts to increase CT education in minority populations, and demonstrate certain healthcare bias for CT offering which will need to be addressed to guarantee CT diversity and health equity.
