Long-term effects of nitrogen enrichment in pollen chemistry of a plant species from Brazilian savannas, Pavonia rosa campestris

Human activities have substantially increased soil nutrient availability during the past decades, affecting plant community composition and plants' nutritional content. Several amino acids found in pollen, the main source of larval diet for bees, affect the development, health, and behaviour of this important group of pollinators. A better understanding of the consequences of global changes on pollen amino acid content can help explain and predict future impacts on bee populations and diversity. This is particularly relevant in regions that are highly exposed to fertilizers due to their importance for global food production, such as the Brazilian savannas (Cerrado), where soils are mostly dystrophic. Here, we use a long-term controlled fertilization experiment conducted in Cerrado and demonstrate that even after 10 years since the last fertilization addition, effects were still detectable on leaf and pollen chemical content. More specifically, pollen amino acid content of Pavonia rosa-campestris (Malvaceae), a species known to be important for the diet of several native bee species, changed because of nitrogen (N) addition. Not only did the overall amino acid content increase with N addition, but its profile was also affected, with the proportion of some amino acids increasing (e.g. isoleucine, leucine, serine, threonine), while decreasing for others (e.g. cysteine). These amino acids can have important effects on larval development and flower visitor behaviour. Further studies evaluating the effects on a diverse set of plant species and the consequent impacts on flower visitation and bee fitness are essential to better understand the full consequences of increased nitrogen availability in nutrient-limited ecosystems such as Cerrado.

Pollinator-mediated effects of landscape-scale land use on grassland plant community composition and ecosystem functioning - seven hypotheses.

Environmental change is disrupting mutualisms between organisms worldwide. Reported declines in insect populations and changes in pollinator community compositions in response to land use and other environmental drivers have put the spotlight on the need to conserve pollinators. While this is often motivated by their role in supporting crop yields, the role of pollinators for reproduction and resulting taxonomic and functional assembly in wild plant communities has received less attention. Recent findings suggest that observed and experimental gradients in pollinator availability can affect plant community composition, but we know little about when such shifts are to be expected, or the impact they have on ecosystem functioning. Correlations between plant traits related to pollination and plant traits related to other important ecosystem functions, such as productivity, nitrogen uptake or palatability to herbivores, lead us to expect non-random shifts in ecosystem functioning in response to changes in pollinator communities. At the same time, ecological and evolutionary processes may counteract these effects of pollinator declines, limiting changes in plant community composition, and in ecosystem functioning. Despite calls to investigate community- and ecosystem-level impacts of reduced pollination, the study of pollinator effects on plants has largely been confined to impacts on plant individuals or single-species populations. With this review we aim to break new ground by bringing together aspects of landscape ecology, ecological and evolutionary plant-insect interactions, and biodiversity-ecosystem functioning research, to generate new ideas and hypotheses about the ecosystem-level consequences of pollinator declines in response to land-use change, using grasslands as a focal system. Based on an integrated set of seven hypotheses, we call for more research investigating the putative pollinator-mediated links between landscape-scale land use and ecosystem functioning. In particular, future research should use combinations of experimental and observational approaches to assess the effects of changes in pollinator communities over multiple years and across species on plant communities and on trait distributions both within and among species.

Spatial Heterogeneity Effects on Meta-Community Stability of Annual Plants from a Coastal Dune Ecosystem.

Spatial heterogeneity affects plant community composition and diversity. It is particularly noticeable in annual plant communities, which vary in space and time over short distances and periods, forming meta-communities at the regional scale. This study was conducted at the coastal dune ecosystem in Nizzanim nature reserve, Israel. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the spatial heterogeneity, which is expressed in differences in the fixation levels of the dunes and patches outside and beneath the dominant Artemisia monosperma shrubs, on the characteristics of the annual plant meta-community and its temporal stability, considering the mechanisms that may affect it. Thirteen dunes were studied: three mobile, seven semi-fixed, and three fixed dunes. Data on the annual plants were collected during the spring seasons of 2006, 2007, 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2016. For each dune, 72 quadrats of 40×40 cm were sampled yearly, with 24 quadrats per slope aspect (windward, leeward, and crest), 12 under the shrub, and 12 in the open. The results indicate that the transition from mobile dunes through semi-fixed to fixed dunes is characterized by an increase in annual plant cover, species richness, species diversity, changes in plant communities, and stability driven by the asynchrony of species population fluctuations. Asynchrony affected the stability of the meta-community of this ecosystem in patches beneath the shrubs but not in the open patches.

Explore the soil factors driving soil microbial community and structure in Songnen alkaline salt degraded grassland.

Saline-alkali degradation in grassland significantly affects plant community composition and soil physical and chemical properties. However, it remains unclear whether different degradation gradients affect soil microbial community and the main soil driving factors. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the effects of saline-alkali degradation on soil microbial community and the soil factors affecting soil microbial community in order to develop effective solutions to restore the degraded grassland ecosystem. In this study, Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology was used to study the effects of different saline-alkali degradation gradients on soil microbial diversity and composition. Three different gradients were qualitatively selected, which were the light degradation gradient (LD), the moderate degradation gradient (MD) and the severe degradation gradient (SD). The results showed that salt and alkali degradation decreased the diversity of soil bacterial and fungal communities, and changed the composition of bacterial and fungal communities. Different degradation gradients had different adaptability and tolerance species. With the deterioration of salinity in grassland, the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and Chytridiomycota showed a decreasing trend. EC, pH and AP were the main drivers of soil bacterial community composition, while EC, pH and SOC were the main drivers of soil fungal community composition. Different microorganisms are affected by different soil properties. The changes of plant community and soil environment are the main factors limiting the diversity and composition of soil microbial community. The results show that saline-alkali degradation of grassland has a negative effect on microbial biodiversity, so it is important to develop effective solutions to restore degraded grassland to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem function.

Climate change alters slug abundance but not herbivory in a temperate grassland.

Climate change will significantly impact the world's ecosystems, in part by altering species interactions and ecological processes, such as herbivory and plant community dynamics, which may impact forage quality and ecosystem production. Yet relatively few field experimental manipulations assessing all of these parameters have been performed to date. To help fill this knowledge gap, we evaluated the effects of increased temperature (+3°C day and night, year-round) and precipitation (+30% of mean annual rainfall) on slug herbivory and abundance and plant community dynamics biweekly in a pasture located in central Kentucky, U.S.A. Warming increased slug abundance once during the winter, likely due to improving conditions for foraging, whereas warming reduced slug abundance at times in late spring, mid-summer, and early fall (from 62-95% reduction depending on month). We found that warming and increased precipitation did not significantly modify slug herbivory at our site, despite altering slug abundance and affecting plant community composition and forage quality. Climate change will alter seasonal patterns of slug abundance through both direct effects on slug biology and indirect effects mediated by changes in the plant community, suggesting that pasture management practices may have to adapt.

Whole-soil warming shifts species composition without affecting diversity, biomass and productivity of the plant community in an alpine meadow.

The structure and function of plant communities in alpine meadow ecosystems are potentially susceptible to climate warming. Here, we utilized a unique field manipulation experiment in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and investigated the responses of plant species diversity, composition, biomass, and net primary productivity (NPP) at both community and functional group levels to whole-soil-profile warming (3-4 °C across 0-100cm) during 2018-2021. Plant species diversity, biomass and NPP (both above- and belowground) at the community level showed remarkable resistance to warming. However, plant community composition gradually shifted over time. Over the whole experimental warming period, aboveground biomass of legumes significantly decreased by 45%. Conversely, warming significantly stimulated aboveground biomass of forbs by 84%, likely because of better growth and competitive advantages from the warming-induced stimulation of soil water and other variables. However, warming showed minor effects on aboveground biomass of grasses and sedges. Overall, we emphasize that experimental warming may significantly affect plant community composition in a short term by triggering adjustments in plant interspecific competition or survival strategies, which may cause potential changes in plant productivity over a more extended period and lead to changes in carbon source-sink dynamics in the alpine meadow ecosystem.

Grazing by semi‐feral cattle and horses supports plant species richness and uniqueness in grasslands

AbstractQuestionHow does naturalistic grazing (trophic rewilding with large herbivores), in contrast to mowing and free succession (no grazing), affect plant community composition and species richness in temperate grassland grazed by semi‐feral cattle and horses?LocationMols Laboratory, Denmark.MethodsWe investigated grazing exclosures in the rewilding area of the Mols Laboratory, four years after its establishment. We focused on moist to dry grassland vegetation, that is, excluding scrub and woodland. Each experimental block consisted of five 5 × 9 m plots, representing four fenced treatments, that is, summer‐only grazing, winter‐only grazing, full exclosure with annual autumn mowing and full exclosure with passive succession. The matrix (the fifth treatment) was grazed by large herbivores at close‐to‐natural densities, that is, regulated bottom‐up by the carrying capacity of the area. Hence, even the seasonal grazing treatments were grazed at close‐to‐natural animal density. Quantitative plant community composition was assessed using the point‐intercept method in 25 × 25 cm quadrats, supplemented with biomass calibration models based on additional quadrats, in which above‐ground plant biomass was harvested after recording and the material sorted to species and weighed. Uniqueness was assessed as the sum of inverse range sizes for constituent species (unicity).ResultsWe found an appreciably higher plant species richness in grazing treatments than under both annual mowing and full exclosure, but only minor differences between seasonal grazing treatments. Uniqueness was highest in year‐round and winter‐only grazing and lowest in summer‐only grazing. The forb:graminoid ratio tended to be high in the winter‐only grazing treatment, whereas annual mowing was associated with dominance of graminoids over forbs. Full‐exclosure plots had accumulation of litter and the lowest species richness. Initial heterogeneity between plots within blocks and a systematic difference between blocks in moist and dry grasslands may have diluted treatment effects at this early point after the onset of the experiment. Data analysis using the biomass estimates derived from the calibration models yielded only minor differences in the patterns described above, when compared to the results obtained using the raw number of intercepts.ConclusionsNaturalistic grazing is a goal in itself in ecological restoration, but also proposed as an efficient management tool to promote conservation of grassland plants and communities. We found both plant species richness and the prevalence of regionally rarer species (uni) to be higher with grazing than mowing or abandonment. Similarly, the tendency for forbs to prevail under grazing may translate into enhanced floral resources for anthophilous insects. Summer‐only grazing at low density of large herbivores was not significantly different from winter‐only and year‐round grazing, but this treatment was much closer to natural grazing than intensive summer grazing typical of agri‐environmental practices.

Limited decadal growth of mountain birch saplings has minor impact on surrounding tundra vegetation.

Temperatures over the Arctic region are increasing at three times the rate of the global average. Consequently, Arctic vegetation is changing and trees are encroaching into the tundra. In this study, we examine the establishment and growth of mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa), which forms the treeline in subarctic Europe, and its impact on community composition across the treeline ecotone nearby Abisko, Sweden. Birch advancement along elevational gradients was studied by comparing data collected in 2016 with data collected 10 and 15 years previously. Species identity, cover, and phylogenetic relatedness were used to assess the impact of birch encroachment on community composition. Our results show that birch occurrence above the treeline did not affect plant community composition, probably owing to the observed lack of significant growth due to herbivore browsing, nitrogen limitation, or a reduction in snow cover. Independent of birch performance, the tundra community structure shifted toward a novel community dissimilar from the forest plant community found below the treeline. Taken together, our findings are explained by species‐specific responses to climate change, rather than by a linear forest advance. Future treeline advancements are likely more restricted than previously expected.

Do southern seed or soil microbes mitigate the effects of warming on establishing prairie plant communities?

Restoration in this era of climate change comes with a new challenge: anticipating how best to restore populations to persist under future climate conditions. Specifically, it remains unknown whether locally adapted or warm-adapted seeds best promote native plant community restoration in the warmer conditions predicted in the future and whether local or warm-adapted soil microbial communities could mitigate plant responses to warming. This may be especially relevant for biomes spanning large climatic gradients, such as the North American tallgrass prairie. Here, we used a short-term mesocosm experiment to evaluate how seed provenances (Local Northern region, Non-local Northern region, Non-local Southern region) of 10 native tallgrass prairie plants (four forbs, two legumes, and four grasses) responded to warmer conditions predicted in the future and how soil microbial communities from those three regions influenced these responses. Warming and seed provenance affected plant community composition and warming decreased plant diversity for all three seed provenances. Plant species varied in their individual responses to warming, and across species, we detected no consistent differences among the three provenances in terms of biomass response to warming and few strong effects of soil provenance. Our work provides evidence that warming, in part, may reduce plant diversity and affect restored prairie composition. Because the southern provenance did not consistently outperform others under warming and we found little support for the "local is best" paradigm currently dominating restoration practice, identifying appropriate seed provenances to promote restoration success both now and in future warmer environments may be challenging. Due to the idiosyncratic responses across species, we recommend that land managers compare seeds from different regions for each species to determine which seed provenance performs best under warming and in restoration for tallgrass prairies.

Asymmetrical Warming Between Elevations May Result in Similar Plant Community Composition Between Elevations in Alpine Grasslands

Asymmetrical warming between elevations is a common phenomenon and warming magnitude increases with increasing elevations on the Tibetan Plateau, which in turn may reduce temperature differences between elevations. However, it is still unclear how such phenomenon will affect plant community composition in alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau. Therefore, in this study, we performed an experiment at three elevations (i.e., 4,300 m, 4,500 m, and 4,700 m) in alpine grasslands, the Northern Tibetan Plateau since May, 2010. Open top chambers were established at the elevations 4,500 m and 4,700 m. Plant species and phylogenetic composition were investigated in August, 2011–2019. There were no significant differences in plant species and phylogenetic composition, environmental temperature and moisture conditions between the elevation 4,300 m under non-warming conditions and the elevation 4,500 m under warming conditions in 2019. There were also no significant differences in plant species composition, environmental temperature and moisture conditions between the elevation 4,500 m under non-warming conditions and the elevation 4,700 m under warming conditions in 2019. Therefore, the narrowing temperature differences between elevations may result in plant community composition between elevations tending to be similar in alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau under future elevational asymmetrical warming.

The Burial Under Peat Technique: An Innovative Method to Restore Sphagnum Peatlands Impacted by Mineral Linear Disturbances

Mineral roads in peatlands change the nature of the substrate, influence the water table level of the peatland on either side of the road and the physicochemical characteristics of the water and peat. These changes can in turn affect plant community composition. The efficiency of an innovative and affordable method for the restoration of peatlands impacted by roads was evaluated: the Burial Under Peat Technique. To be considered effective from an ecological point of view, the technique should meet restoration goals by 1) confining the chemical elements and compounds potentially leaching from the mineral material; 2) creating and maintaining a restored surface elevation similar to the adjacent peatland for optimal rewetting; and 3) re-establishing typical peatland vegetation communities. Three years post-restoration, water sampled at various depths and distances to the buried road presented chemical elements and compounds concentrations similar to the means measured in the pristine surrounding peatland for most of the ions analyzed. The different steps of the technique ensured the reestablishment of an elevation similar to the surrounding peatland. The return of peatland plant communities was slow, mainly due to local factors (e.g., presence of drainage ditches). Furthermore, the Burial Under Peat Technique fulfilled the restoration objectives in re-establishing an acid organic soil. Finally, it is a cost-effective method in comparison to completely removing the mineral material and transporting new material to fill the depression left by the excavation of the road.

Ant preference for seeds without awns increases removal of exotic relative to native grass seeds

1. The removal of seeds by granivorous ants can affect plant recruitment through either seed loss from predation or the dispersal and recruitment of seeds that are removed but not consumed. Consequently, variation in ant selection preferences can influence patterns of seed removal and affect plant community composition, including the spread of exotic plant species.2. We conducted a seed removal experiment to determine whether: 1) rates of removal by ants differed between three native and three exotic grass species in an Australian temperate grassland; and 2) differences in removal rates were associated with the presence or absence of awns.3. We found that seeds of the three exotic species, none of which had awns, were removed by ants at a higher rate than those of the three native species, all of which had awns. Removal rates of native species increased when awns were manually removed, suggesting the awns of native species acted as a removal barrier.4. While we do not know the fate of seeds removed from our experiment, differences among species in removal rates mirrored differences in their spatial spread in a separate seed addition experiment. Exotic species removed by ants at a higher rate in the removal experiment had more widely dispersed seedlings than native species in the seed addition experiment, potentially indicating a role for granivorous ants in dispersing exotic seeds. Identifying ant selection preferences and directly linking removal to seed fate could help explain how exotic grass species move around the landscape.

Interactions between seed-dispersing ant species affect plant community composition in field mesocosms.

In generalized mutualisms, species vary in the quality of services they provide to their partners directly via traits that affect partner fitness and indirectly via traits that influence interactions among mutualist species that play similar functional roles. Myrmecochory, or seed dispersal by ants, is a generalized mutualism with ant species varying in the quality of dispersal services they provide to their plant partners. Variation in ant species identity can directly impact seed dispersal patterns and plant community composition; however, we know less about how interactions among seed-dispersing ant species indirectly influence plant partners. The invasive ant Myrmica rubra, is a high-quality seed-disperser in its native range that interacts with myrmecochores (ant-dispersed plants) and the high-quality seed disperser Aphaenogaster sp. in its invaded range. We use this system to examine how interactions between two functionally similar mutualist ant species influence the recruitment and community composition of ant-dispersed plants. We performed a field mesocosm experiment and a laboratory behavioural experiment to compare discovery and dominance behaviours between ant species, and seed dispersal and seedling recruitment of four myrmecochore species among intraspecific interaction treatments of each ant species and an interspecific interaction treatment. We found that M. rubra was better at discovering and dispersing seeds, but Aphaenogaster sp. was dominantly aggressive over M. rubra. Interspecific interactions dampened seed dispersal relative to dispersal by the better disperser. Despite this dampening, we found no effect of interspecific interactions on seedling recruitment. However, community composition of seedlings in the interspecific interaction treatment was more similar to composition in the aggressively dominant ant (Aphaenogaster sp.) treatment than in the better discoverer ant M. rubra treatment. We show that interspecific interactions between mutualist species in the same functional guild affect the outcome of mutualistic interactions with partner species. Despite the native ant dispersing fewer seeds, its dominance over the subordinate (invasive) ant has the potential to allow for some level of biotic resistance against the effects of M. rubra on plant communities when these species coexist.

Nitrogen Enrichment Reduces Nitrogen and Phosphorus Resorption Through Changes to Species Resorption and Plant Community Composition

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition has affected plant community composition and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. This includes changes to the way plants use and recycle nutrients, including effects on nutrient resorption, which is a key process through which plants recover nutrients from tissue during senescence. Nutrient resorption has considerable adaptive and functional significance for plants and helps regulate core ecosystem processes such as decomposition. However, our understanding of how N deposition affects nutrient resorption and, in particular, of how N inputs alter ecosystem resorption via changes to existing species’ resorption compared with changes to community composition remains poor. To disentangle the role of species versus community composition controls driving variation in nutrient resorption responses to N inputs, we carried out an experiment with six different N addition rates in a temperate steppe. We found that species-scale nutrient resorption responses to N enrichment were variable; for example, only half of the measured species reduced both N and P resorption efficiency in response to increased N inputs. In contrast, community-scale responses consistently resulted in reduced N and P resorption. Still, N-induced changes in community composition were a weaker control on overall resorption responses than were the effects on individual species; however, it was the synergistic interaction between the two that resulted in the large total reductions of nutrient resorption in the face of increased N. Taken together, our results highlight that understanding and predicting nutrient resorption responses will be most accurately scaled by accounting not only for species’ reductions in resorption but also for changes in community composition.

Phosphorus is more effective than nitrogen in restoring plant communities of heavy metals polluted soils

Heavy metal pollution is widespread, and has an increasing trend in some countries and regions. It can be easily accumulated in plants, leading to plant species loss and affecting plant community composition. Artificial restoration can conserve plant diversity in contaminated soils and accelerate the recovery of polluted ecosystems. The application of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is inexpensive and convenient, which can increase the resistance of plants to adversity and promote the growth of plants in heavy metal polluted soils. In order to examine the effect of N and P nutrition on the conservation of plant community, we conducted a comparison experiment in greenhouse using soil with low N and P concentration, and set five treatments: C (soil with no heavy metals and fertilizer addition), H (soil with heavy metals addition but with no fertilizer), HN (soil with heavy metals and N addition), HP treatment(soil with heavy metals and P addition), HNP treatment (soil with heavy metals, N and P addition). Our results showed that heavy metal pollution reduced plant species by 300%, and significantly decreased plant diversity (P < 0.05). N addition increased the richness of plant species and increased the dominance of Euphorbia peplus, but had no significant effect on plant diversity and community structure, while reduced the evenness of plant species. P addition of HP and HNP treatments restored plant species richness and increased plant diversity under heavy metal pollution. The plant community structures of these two treatments were more similar to that of group C. Compared with N addition, P addition had a better performance to restoring the species composition and relative dominance of plant communities. Our results provided a guidance for the restoration of plant communities and the conservation of plant species in low N and P concentration soils with the context of heavy metal pollution.

Mowing alters nitrogen effects on the community-level plant stoichiometry through shifting plant functional groups in a semi-arid grassland

Land-use practices such as mowing and nitrogen (N) fertilization can have significant impacts on plant stoichiometry. However, the interactive effects of mowing and N fertilization on the community-level plant stoichiometry and the underlying processes are not well understood. We examined the impacts of mowing (once a year) and N fertilization (12 g N m−2 yr−1) on the community-level plant stoichiometry in a semi-arid grassland on the Loess Plateau. Results obtained showed that mowing alone had no effect on the community-level plant N or phosphorus (P) concentration. N fertilization alone significantly reduced the community-level plant P concentration, but did not affect the community-level plant N concentration, leading to an enhancement of plant N:P ratio. However, mowing altered the effects of N fertilization, leading to a higher plant N (and P) concentration than the fertilization-only plots. Also, mowing significantly reduced soil nitrate (NO3−), but increased soil temperature, photosynthetic active radiation, plant diversity, richness and gross ecosystem productivity. In addition, mowing and N fertilization significantly affected plant community composition through shifting dominant plant functional groups (PFGs) (e.g. asteraceae, forbs and grass). Further, our structural equation modeling analysis showed that shifts in PFGs played an important role in regulating plant stoichiometry under mowing and N fertilization. Together, these results illustrate that effective management of mowing and N fertilization may induce changes in soil limiting nutrients and shifts in plant community composition, potentially altering plant N:P stoichiometry at the community level.

Effects of Grazing, Wind Erosion, and Dust Deposition on Plant Community Composition and Structure in a Temperate Steppe

Grazing can affect plant community composition and structure directly by foraging and indirectly by increasing wind erosion and dust storms and subsequently influence ecosystem functioning and ecological services. However, the combined effects of grazing, wind erosion, and dust deposition have not been explored. As part of a 7-year (2010–2016) field manipulative experiment, this study was conducted to examine the impacts of grazing and simulated aeolian processes (wind erosion and dust deposition) on plant community cover and species richness in a temperate steppe on the Mongolian Plateau, China. Grazing decreased total cover by 4.2%, particularly the cover of tall-stature plants (> 20 cm in height), but resulted in 9.1% greater species richness. Wind erosion also reduced total cover by 17.0% primarily via suppressing short-stature plants associated with soil nitrogen loss, but had no effect on species richness. Dust deposition enhanced total cover by 5.7%, but resulted in a 7.3% decrease in species richness by driving some of the short-stature plant species to extinction. Both wind erosion and dust deposition showed additive effects with grazing on vegetation cover and species richness, though no detectable interaction between aeolian processes and grazing could be detected due to our methodological constraints. The changes in gross ecosystem productivity, ecosystem respiration, and net ecosystem productivity under the wind erosion and dust deposition treatments were positively related to aeolian process-induced changes in vegetation cover and species richness, highlighting the important roles of plant community shifts in regulating ecosystem carbon cycling. Our findings suggest that plant traits (for example, canopy height) and soil nutrients may be the key for understanding plant community responses to grassland management and natural hazards.

Hydrogeology and Landform Morphology Affect Plant Communities in a Great Lakes Ridge-and-Swale Wetland Complex

Trajectories of vegetative change in wetlands can be influenced strongly by shifts in water-table elevation driven by evapotranspiration and spatial-temporal variability in groundwater. The specific dynamics of such interactions are difficult to quantify because of spatial complexities associated with local climate, geomorphology, and underlying geology. Nonetheless, a better understanding of the effects of groundwater and landform pattern on plant communities in wetlands can help with future predictions of change. Over two successive growing seasons, we investigated water-balance dynamics in 15 wetlands in a forested Great Lakes coastal wetland complex consisting of relict beach ridges and intervening swales. Our goal was to explore how variation in hydrogeology and landform morphology affected plant community composition. Water-balance analyses from water-level fluctuation methods, along with interpretation of underlying stratigraphy and slope, were used to explain plant-community ordination results. Our findings showed that phreatophytic plant communities developed in locations where hydrogeology or greater slopes allowed for supplemental groundwater flow to the swales. Conversely, shallow water-table slopes maintained standing water in swales, leading to obligate wetland plant communities. This study provides a clearer representation of hydrogeologic and ecohydrologic interactions to help inform our understanding of the relationship between groundwater hydrology and plant communities in wetlands.

Soil and plant characteristics during two hydrologically contrasting years at the lakeshore wetland of Poyang Lake, China

The main objective of this research was to examine the effects of inter-annual water regime variation on soil and plant characteristics, and soil–vegetation relationship at the lakeshore wetland of Poyang Lake, China. Six transects which paralleled the lakeshore were established at a typical Carex lakeshore wetland of Poyang Lake. We performed the field investigation and sampling in the autumn growing seasons in a flooding year (2017) and a drought year (2018). Paired t test was carried out to determine the effects of inter-annual water regime variation on various soil and plant parameters. Redundancy analysis was used to examine the relationships of plant species composition with flooding and soil variables in both years. Soil water content (SW), soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), the ratio of SOC to TP (C/P ratio), the ratio of TN to TP (N/P ratio), ammonia nitrogen concentration (NH4-N), and nitrate nitrogen concentration (NO3-N) were 21 ~ 71% higher in the flooding year than in the drought year. Plant Shannon–Wiener indices were significantly lower in the drought year than in the flooding year, whereas aboveground and belowground plant biomass showed opposite patterns. Flooding and soil variables could strongly determine plant communities in both years. Flooding duration was the most important variable among all flooding and soil variables. After eliminating the effects of flooding duration, pH and SW still significantly affected plant community composition in the flooding year, while only NH4-N significantly impacted on plant species distribution in the drought year. The results provided direct evidences that the inter-annual water regime variation not only could dramatically modify soil and plant variables but also could change the soil–vegetation relationship in the wetlands. Our studies have great implications for the conservation and restoration of the wetlands, especially for the lake wetlands in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River.

Disappearing green: Shrubs decline and bryophytes increase with nine years of increased snow accumulation in the High Arctic

AbstractQuestionHow does increased snow depth affect plant community composition of High Arctic tundra, and can the Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) detect induced changes?LocationAdventdalen, Spitsbergen, Svalbard (78°10′ N, 16°04′ E).MethodsWe manipulated snow depth on the tundra using fences, resulting in Deep, Medium, and Ambient snow regimes. Increased snow led to warmer winter soil temperatures, a delayed onset of growing season and wetter conditions during the early growing season. Plant community composition of living and dead plant material was recorded after nine years. NDVI was measured at the plot level using a handheld sensor.ResultsCommunity composition and the abundance of typically dominant shrub species were substantially different in the Deep compared to the Ambient regime. Deep had lower cover of live shrubs (Cassiope tetragona, Dryas octopetala and Salix polaris) and Luzula confusa, and higher cover of dead shrubs (Cassiope and Dryas) compared to the other snow regimes. Bryophyte cover was highest in Medium. NDVI was positively correlated to the cover of living vascular plants and negatively correlated to cover of dead vascular plants. Accordingly, Deep snow regime had reduced NDVI, reflecting the contribution of dead Cassiope and Dryas.ConclusionSnow regime strongly influenced community composition in High Arctic plant communities. Enhanced snow regimes had more dead shrubs, reduced Luzula and increased bryophyte cover than ambient conditions. These differences were detectable by handheld NDVI sensors.
