Widely Project: Utilizing an Ultra-Wide Angle Lens in Photographing Museum Bahari Jakarta

An ultra-wide angle lens is an “abnormal” type of lens that is capable of capturing scenes with a super vast perspective. The strongest characteristic of this lens is its distortion. Often distortions are seen as imperfections and disasters. However, in the “Widely Project”, distortion is used to create a unique and aesthetic perspective. The aim of this research is to use an ultra-wide angle lens to photograph Museum Bahari Jakarta. The photography project was subsequently utilized to preserve objects in the museum and the architecture of its buildings, which contain the historical story of the archipelago. The results show that ultra-wide angle lens are able to: create an attractive, artistic, and aesthetic perception, a “real” feeling on miniatures, furthermore a majestic atmosphere on ships and buildings.

Research on the English Translation of The Book of Songs from the Perspective of Reception Aesthetics: A Case Study of Xiao Ya·Cai Wei

The English translation of the Chinese classic The Book of Songs serves as an important bridge for cultural exchange between China and the West, profoundly influencing the dissemination of Chinese culture abroad. This paper explores how to improve the quality of English translations of The Book of Songs by considering reader reception, using the widely circulated excerpt Xiao Ya · Cai Wei as a case study. Employing a comparative analysis of the two classic translations by the well-known Chinese translator Xu Yuanchong and the renowned British translator James Legge, this study found the two translations have their respective pros and cons. To improve translation quality for future international dissemination of Chinese culture, a form of collaborative translation by Chinese and English-speaking translators is recommended.

At the Knot of Presence: Weaving with the embodied knowledge of my artistic palette in Liza Lim's One and the Other (Speculative Polskas for Karin)

This artistic research exposition unfolds the shared work between Australian composer Liza Lim and Swedish violinist Karin Hellqvist, from the viewpoint of Hellqvist as performer and co-creator. Together, the artists have created the violin solo work One and the Other (Speculative Polskas for Karin) (2021–22). The Swedish folk music tradition that Hellqvist has carried with her since her childhood, and especially the polska dance, serves as their point of departure. This tradition resides in Hellqvist’s body and performance practice as embodied knowledge – a term introduced by Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1962), and it becomes their main path of research. A central concept in the reflections is the ‘artistic palette’ – a concept created by Hellqvist to conceptualise the skills and abilities used in creative work. Hellqvist’s embodied knowledge connected to the tradition is woven into the work through explorations of elements as the specific pulse of the polska and its ornamentation. Furthermore, those embodied skills are explored as decoupled in the third movement, capturing indeterminate aspects. The main question addressed is how the embodied knowledge of Hellqvist’s artistic palette serves as resource and inspiration in the shared process and how it affects the ontology of One and the Other (Speculative Polskas for Karin). Topics of distributed creativity, shared work as mycelial structure, instrument-building, ownership, and temporal ecology are being unpacked in the light of the artistic palette. The artistic research exposition unfolds a compositional process whereby the performer is participating actively, thus problematising the view of where creativity may be located in compositional work. It comprises written reflections, audio examples, pictures, and video material from the creative process as well as a video of the whole work. A Study of Thing-Narrative in The Masque of the Red Death

The Masque of the Red Death is one of Edgar Allan Poe‘s most important works, which has been studied by numerous scholars from the perspectives of style, narrative aesthetics, and semiotics. However, the relevant interpretation to date has almost completely ignored the description of things in the novel. At present, there is an obvious “material turn” or “non-human turn” in the field of humanities research, that is, the research perspective turns to the “object” components that have been largely ignored in the past, including animals, plants, minerals, ecosystems, landscapes, places, etc. Therefore, from the perspective of the thing-narrative, combined with the social and historical background of the works, this paper analyzes Poe‘s use of thing-narrative techniques through close reading of the text. Through the in-depth analysis of the interaction between things and characters in the story, the author explains how castles, rooms, and ebony clocks, as cultural symbols, agents with subjectivity, exist as noumenon, influence or predict the fate of characters, and promote the development of the plot. And to further clarify Poe‘s theme in this novel - the inevitability of death.

As the quintessence of our country, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an essential part of traditional Chinese culture and contributes to the health of the Chinese nation. TCM gradually captures the attention of the world and delivers benefits to people from the world. Hong Lou Meng, one of China’s four great masterpieces, is an encyclopedic novel that involves more than 290 pieces of medical knowledge. From the perspective of reception aesthetics, this paper studies translation strategies of TCM terms in the Yangs and Hawkes translations of Hong Lou Meng, in order to provide reference for the English translation of TCM terminology

A Contrastive Study of Chinese-English Translation of Ancient Poetry from the Perspective of Aesthetics of Reception: A Case Study of the Two Translations of Vain Longing

The Chinese literary classic "Dream of the Red Chamber" features a variety of poems and songs, with "Vain Longing," which serves as its theme song, being particularly popular among readers both domestically and internationally. Among the many translations available, those by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, along with Hawkes' version, are the most prominent and hold significant research value. Acceptance Aesthetics, which emerged from the German critical school in the 20th century, provides a fresh lens through which to view the translation of ancient Chinese poetry. This paper utilizes Aesthetics of reception as its theoretical framework and focuses on the English translations of "Vain Longing" by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang as well as Hawkes found in "Dream of the Red Chamber." By examining their translation philosophies and approaches, this study aims to contribute insights for translating ancient poetry within literary contexts while enhancing global appreciation for Chinese poetic beauty and promoting classical Chinese culture.

Exploring the Barrier between Language and Culture from the Perspective of Postmodernist Aesthetics - Taking the Translation of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Huang Jinyan and the Translation by Fan Ye as an Example

Focusing on the translations of Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude by Huang Jinyan and Fan Ye, this paper explores how language shapes and reflects cultural differences, thus influencing cross-cultural communication from a postmodernist aesthetic perspective. The opening chapter briefly describes the relevance of postmodern aesthetics to translation studies, with a special focus on the strategies of naturalization and alienation in magical realist translations and their role in conveying cultural connotations. Subsequently, a comparative analysis of the two translations reveals the differences in the translators’ strategies in dealing with the complex symbols and cultural elements of the original work: Fan’s translation tends to alienate, retaining the exotic and magical qualities and preserving the uniqueness of Latin American culture, but it may increase the barriers to comprehension for Chinese readers; Huang’s translation is inclined towards naturalization, which is closer to local reading habits and enhances the readability of the text, but it may diminish the cultural shock and depth of the original text. The core of the article emphasizes that translation is a dual process of cultural selection and re-creation. It requires the translator to strike a balance between preserving the original style and transmitting the cultural essence within the framework of postmodern aesthetics. The article further discusses the crucial role of this balance in enhancing cross-cultural communication and expanding horizons. It also proposes guidelines for future translation practice and research, advocating for a harmonious and symbiotic translation strategy that respects the original work while adapting to the target culture, particularly in the translation of cross-cultural literature.

Comparative Study on Aesthetic Representation in the Translations of The Peach Blossom Fan (Excerpt) from the Perspective of Translation Aesthetics: With Xu Yuanchong s and Stephen Owen s Translations as Case Studies

From the perspective of translation aesthetics, this paper compares the differences in aesthetic representation between the translations of The Peach Blossom Fan (excerpt) by Stephen Owen and Xu Yuanchong so as to provide constructive insights to the study of the English translation of the drama. The findings indicate the disparities between these two translations in dealing with language forms and also reveal Owen s and Xu s different interpretations of the imagery and emotions.

A Brief Discussion on Mr. Congzhou Chen's Thoughts on Garden Art

The role and significance of Mr. Chen multiple identities, personal practices, and academic history in the formation of his personal thoughts and theories on the art of gardening are discussed to explore Mr. Chen's inheritance and innovation of Chinese thoughts on landscape gardening. Analyzing Mingxuan, Yuyuan, and Nanyuan from the perspective of poetic and picturesque aesthetics, we discover the course of Mr. Congzhou Chen's gardening ideas and his inheritance and innovation of traditional garden culture. As Mr. Chen said, Mingxuan is an imitation with some new ideas, Yuyuan East is a continuation with some new ideas, and Nanyuan is an independent design, which is a concrete embodiment of his garden theory. Theorizing the Chair: History, Culture, and Design

In Arthur Danto’s The Seat of the Soul: Three Chairs, the chair is a source of power and authority. This paper explores the aesthetic importance of chairs and their designers and determines why people from various cultures create different designs that all perform the same function: seating. Here, the chair is examined as an artwork and design phenomenon from historical, cultural, stylistic, and aesthetic perspectives. Data were gathered through a comprehensive literature review, reports, archival materials, and museum visits. Descriptive, historical, and analytical methods were used to explore the religious, symbolic, spiritual, artistic, competitive, and academic legacies of the chair. Despite the similarity in function, the chair is more important than a sofa, bed, or bench. It displays one’s status, education, knowledge, and artistic taste. However, practicality, low-cost materials, and money have trumped aesthetics in recent years. The findings may help young chair designers highlight their competitiveness and inventiveness.

Implementation of a Practical Environmental Sustainable Design Project in Interior Architectural Education: A Case Study at the University of Jordan

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to discuss the implementing of a practical project as a new learning methodology to help students develop expertise in the functional, aesthetic, and creative aspects of environmental design. Methods: The research is qualitative in design and based on a case-study approach, in which sixty-three environmental practical projects were explored. The examined design projects were conducted by interior design students at the department of visual arts of the University of Jordan as part of an environmental design course during three semesters in 2022. Results: Nine themes emerged from the study, which were interpreted based on the selecting and processing of materials (either recycled or adapted from the local environment). These materials comprised recycled plastic, recycled paper, recycled metal, recycled wood, recycled glass, recycled threads, resin, ceramic, and plants. The study also found that working with and processing local or recycled materials in practical projects within the study curriculum helped students acquire skills and gain confidence in relation to environmental practice, and increased their awareness of the different usages of materials and their advantages from both a functional and aesthetic perspective. Conclusions: The significance of the study lies in its adoption of a practical approach as a new active learning methodology within art and design educational programmes to meet the current educational standards stipulated by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Jordan. Real-world projects foster students’ development of critical creativity to achieve the ultimate principles of environmental design and prepare them to deal with real challenges within the professional job market.

The tasty world of irrational numbers – explorative mathematical visualizations generated by AI image models

In this paper, images containing mathematical ideas that were generated by different image-generating AI models (DALL-E 2, Leonardo.Ai, and Midjourney) are comparatively interpreted from a mathematics aesthetical perspective. Our exploratory study aimed to scrutinize how AI image models visualize abstract mathematical ideas and whether this imagination holds any potential for use in the context of learning mathematics. Two different mathematics-containing prompts, representing different aspects of mathematics, were used as input. Our results show that based on our examples, currently, Midjourney generates the most detailed outcome that can be used as an initial point for discussing mathematical ideas with students in the classroom.

Biomechanical simulation of segmented intrusion of a mandibular canine using Robot Orthodontic Measurement & Simulation System (ROSS)

ObjectiveAim of this study was to investigate the forces and moments during segmented intrusion of a mandibular canine using Cantilever-Intrusion-Springs (CIS). MethodsThree different CIS modifications were investigated using a robotic biomechanical simulation system: unmodified CIS (#1, control), CIS with a lingual directed 6° toe-in bend (#2), and CIS with an additional 20° twist bend (#3). Tooth movement was simulated by the apparative robotic stand, controlled by a force-control algorithm, recording the acting forces and moments with a force-torque sensor. Statistical analysis was performed using Shapiro-Wilk, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA and post hoc tests with Bonferroni correction (α = 0.05). ResultsThe initial intrusive force, which was uniformly generated by a 35° Tip-Back bend, decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from 0.31 N in group (#1) to 0.28 N in group (#3). Vestibular crown tipping reduced significantly (p < 0.05) from 2.11° in group (#1) and 1.72° in group (#2) to 0.05° in group (#3). Matching to that the direction of orovestibular force significantly (p < 0.05) shifted from 0.15 N to vestibular in group (#1) to 0.51 N to oral in group (#3) and the orovestibular tipping moment decreased also significantly (p < 0.05) from 4.63 Nmm to vestibular in group (#1) to 3.56 Nmm in group (#2) and reversed to 1.20 Nmm to oral in group (#3). Apart from that the orovestibular displacement changed significantly (p < 0.05) from 0.66 mm in buccal direction in group (#1) to 0.29 mm orally in group (#2) and 1.49 mm in oral direction as well in group (#3). SignificanceNone of the modifications studied achieved pure mandibular canine intrusion without collateral effects. The significant lingual displacement caused by modification (#3) is, not least from an aesthetic perspective, considered much more severe than a slight tipping of the canine. Consequently, modification (#2) can be recommended for clinical application based on the biomechanical findings.

A Comparative Research of the English Translation of Hurry from the Perspective of Translation Aesthetics

As one of the significant representatives of modern Chinese prose, Zhu Ziqing’s “Hurry” is renowned for its profound reflection and delicate description. This research, from the perspective of translation aesthetics, conducts a comparative analysis of the English translations of Zhu Ziqing’s prose “Hurry” by Zhu Chunshen, Zhang Peiji, and Howard Goldblatt. By comparing the differences among the three translators in terms of language processing, cultural transformation and transmission, as well as reader orientation and acceptance in translation, this research explores the influence of different translation aesthetic concepts on the translated texts. The results indicate that Zhu Chunshen’s translation emphasizes fidelity to the original language style and artistic conception, Zhang Peiji’s translation excels in fluency and naturalness, catering more to the taste of contemporary English readers, while Howard Goldblatt’s translation is more precise and accurate in language expression, also retaining the original emotion and meaning, with a focus on the phonetic beauty and imagery of language. This research provides valuable insights into the application of translation aesthetics and translation practice.

Comparative Study of Beijing Dialect Translation in Teahouse from the Aesthetic Perspective

As one of Lao She’s masterpieces, Teahouse is a gem and a milestone in Chinese drama which is renowned both domestically and internationally. This article examines the translation of Beijing dialects in two English versions of Teahouse translated by Ying Ruochen and Howard from the perspective of reception aesthetic theory. The results indicates that Ying’s version focuses on stage performance, using simple or concise language which to some extent differs from the aesthetic expectations of the target language readers, while Howard’s translation, aiming at readers’ acceptance, tends to employ formal expressions and lengthy sentence structures, which are less suitable for stage presentation and performance.By revealing the translation differences in local dialects in the versions under this theoretical framework, this paper is hoped to provide valuable insights for translation studies and practice.

Research on Application of Composite Facades for Civilian Reconstruction of Industrial Heritage in Cold Regions Based on Thermal Buffering Effect

Previous studies on the civil transformation of industrial heritage have been conducted mainly from the perspective of architectural history, culture and aesthetics, but rarely focus on energy-saving and the comfort of the new users. Most industrial heritage facades are of high conservation value, but efforts to preserve the authenticity of the facade can lead to the application of limited energy-saving technologies, ultimately resulting in poor indoor thermal environments. Therefore, it is valuable to research how to solve the contradiction between protecting the authenticity of the preserved facades of industrial heritage and improving the indoor environmental performance. This paper proposes two composite facade application strategies based on thermal buffer effects, takes two composite facades renovation methods of Shenyang Dongmao No. 2 Warehouse as an example, utilizes the natural environmental resources to enhance the spatial quality of industrial heritage. With the help of DesignBuilder software modelling simulation analysis, in-depth comparative analysis of the two types of composite facades on the indoor thermal environment of the industrial heritage of the impact and scope. Key findings show that the application of two different composite facade retrofitting techniques not only protects the skin texture of the wall, but also effectively increases the indoor temperature and reduces the indoor energy consumption of the industrial heritage. The composite facade of the external solid wall and the internal glass is more stable in raising the indoor temperature, more effective in reducing the building energy consumption, and more suitable for the civilian transformation of industrial heritage in cold areas. The research findings provide reference for studies on the civil transformation of industrial heritage, and serve as technical references for architects.
