Advances in metal-organic frameworks for water remediation applications.

Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks for stimuli-responsive drug delivery.

After entering the human body, drugs for treating diseases, which are prone to delivery and release in an uncontrolled manner, are affected by various factors. Based on this, many researchers utilize various microenvironmental changes encountered during drug delivery to trigger drug release and have proposed stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become promising stimuli-responsive agents to release the loaded therapeutic agents at the target site to achieve more precise drug delivery due to their high drug loading, excellent biocompatibility, and high stimuli-responsiveness. The MOF-based stimuli-responsive systems can respond to various stimuli under pathological conditions at the site of the lesion, releasing the loaded therapeutic agent in a controlled manner, and improving the accuracy and safety of drug delivery. Due to the changes in different physical and chemical factors in the pathological process of diseases, the construction of stimuli-responsive systems based on MOFs has become a new direction in drug delivery and controlled release. Based on the background of the rapidly increasing attention to MOFs applied in drug delivery, we aim to review various MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems and their response mechanisms to various stimuli. In addition, the current challenges and future perspectives of MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems are also discussed in this review.

Recent trends in metal‐organic frameworks mediated lipase immobilization: A state‐of‐the‐art review

AbstractImmobilized lipase is a powerful biocatalytic system with numerous applications in industries, particularly in the energy, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. Reusability, simple recovery, and high chemical and thermal stability make it an attractive alternative to traditional chemical catalysts in industrial applications. Novel methods and support materials for immobilizing lipases have recently attracted much attention. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of materials for enzyme immobilization carriers due to their appealing features, including a high specific surface area, high specific porosity, a stable framework structure, and a wide variety of functional sites. Due to the protection provided to enzymes by MOFs, several reported MOFs‐lipase composites display exceptional catalytic characteristics relative to free lipases. This includes increased enzyme efficiency, stability, selectivity, and recyclability. Herein, we summarize an updated review of the most recent advances in MOFs immobilizing lipases. This review sheds light on the numerous aspects of lipase‐MOF immobilization, with special emphasis on different techniques of designing lipase‐MOF platforms and the advantages of lipase‐MOF composites. Subsequently, molecular simulation approaches in lipase‐MOF immobilization are briefly introduced. Moreover, practical applications of MOFs‐lipase composites have been outlined. Finally, potential limitations and future directions for MOFs‐lipase immobilization research are highlighted.

Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Removal of Chemical Warfare Agents: Insights into Hydrolysis and Oxidation Reaction Mechanisms.

The destruction of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) is a crucial area of research due to the ongoing evolution of toxic chemicals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous crystalline solids, have emerged as promising materials for this purpose. Their remarkable porosity and large surface areas enable superior adsorption, reactivity, and catalytic abilities, making them ideal for capturing and decomposing target species. Moreover, the tunable networks of MOFs allow customization of their chemical functionalities, making them practicable in personal protective equipment and adjustable to dynamic environments. This review paper focuses on experimental and computational studies investigating the removal of CWAs by MOFs, specifically emphasizing the removal of nerve agents (GB, GD, and VX) via hydrolysis and sulfur mustard (HD) via selective photooxidation. Among the different MOFs, zirconium-based MOFs exhibit extraordinary structural stability and reusability, rendering them the most promising materials for the hydrolytic and photooxidative degradation of CWAs. Accordingly, this work primarily concentrates on exploring the intrinsic catalytic reaction mechanisms in Zr-MOFs through first-principles approximations, as well as the design of efficient degradation strategies in the aqueous and solid phases through the establishment of Zr-MOF structure-property relationships. Recent progress in the tuning and functionalization of MOFs is also examined, aiming to enhance practical CWA removal under realistic battlefield conditions. By providing a comprehensive overview of experimental findings and computational insights, this review paper contributes to the advancement of MOF-based strategies for the destruction of CWAs and highlights the potential of these materials to address the challenges associated with chemical warfare.

Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Their Composites for Non-Enzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Sensors.

In recent years, with pressing needs such as diabetes management, the detection of glucose in various substrates has attracted unprecedented interest from researchers in academia and industry. As a relatively new glucose sensor, non-enzymatic target detection has the characteristics of high sensitivity, good stability and simple manufacturing process. However, it is urgent to explore novel materials with low cost, high stability and excellent performance to modify electrodes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites have the advantages of large surface area, high porosity and high catalytic efficiency, which can be utilized as excellent materials for electrode modification of non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. However, MOFs and their composites still face various challenges and difficulties that limit their further commercialization. This review introduces the applications and the challenges of MOFs and their composites in non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. Finally, an outlook on the development of MOFs and their composites is also presented.

The Adsorptive Separation of Ethylene from C2 Hydrocarbons by Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Separating ethylene (C2 H4 ) from the C2 hydrocarbons is of prime industrial importance for the process of high-purity C2 H4 as an essential raw material in the petrochemical industry. Due to their similar physicochemical properties, the separation of C2 H4 from the C2 hydrocarbons typically entails high-energy separation technologies such as cryogenic distillation and extraction. Alternatively, adsorption separation using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are low-energy separation technologies that manufacture high-purity gas under mild conditions. In this review, we summarized the recent advances in MOFs for the separation and purification of C2 H4 from the C2 hydrocarbons. The mechanisms underlying separating C2 H4 from the C2 hydrocarbons using MOFs are also highlighted. This review also discussed the major challenges and developments of MOFs to separate C2 H4 from the C2 hydrocarbons.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of fascinating supramolecular crystalline materials that have been widely developed for catalysis, gas storage, illumination, drug delivery/cytoprotection, and so on. Recently, MOFs have been found to have potential applications in X-ray detection due to their high sensitivity, fast response time, high absorption coefficient, and radiation stability. In this review, we present an overview on the fundamental mechanism of using MOFs for X-ray scintillation. We further discuss the recent developments in X-ray detection based on indirect X-ray scintillation and direct X-ray conversion. Finally, we provide a summary and a perspective on the future of this promising research field.

Recent Progress in Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Chalcogenides (MX; X = S, Se) as Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors and Catalysts in Fuel Cells

Supercapacitors (SCs) are recognized by high power densities and significantly higher cyclic stability compared to batteries. However, the energy density in SCs should be improved for better applications and commercialization. This could be achieved by developing materials characterized by such porous structures as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal chalcogenides in the electrodes’ materials. Herein, the recent advances in MOF derived from metal sulfides and selenides as electrode materials for SCs are reviewed and discussed. Strategies such as adopting core-shell structures, carbon-coating, and doping, which are used to promote the electrochemical performances of these MOF-based materials, are presented. Additionally, the progress in developing S-doped MOF-derived catalysts for the oxidation-reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathode of fuel cells is also reviewed. In addition, the challenges and future research trends are summarized in this minireview.

Advances in Metal-Organic Framework (MOFs) based biosensors for diagnosis: An update.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have significant advantages over other candidate classes of chemo-sensory materials owing to their extraordinary structural tunability and characteristics. MOF-based biosensing is a simple, and convenient method for identifying various species. Biomarkers are molecular or cellular processes that link environmental exposure to a health outcome. Biomarkers are important in understanding the links between environmental chemical exposure and the development of chronic diseases, as well as in identifying disease-prone subgroups. Until now, several species, including nanoparticles (NPs) and their nanocomposites, small molecules, and unique complex systems, have been used for the chemical sensing of biomarkers. Following the overview of the field, we discussed the various fabrication methods for MOFs development in this review. We provide a thorough overview of the previous five years of progress to broaden the scope of analytes for future research. Several enzymatic and non-enzymatic sensors are offered, together with a mandatory measuring method that includes detection range and dynamic range. In addition, we reviewed the comparison of enzymatic and non-enzymatic biosensors, inventive edges, and the difficulties that need to be solved. This work might open up new possibilities for material production, sensor development, medical diagnostics, and other sensing fields.

Rapidly expanding water pollution has transformed into significant dangers around the world. In recent years, the pharmaceutical and agriculture field attained enormous progress to meet the necessities of health and life; however, discharge of trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and pesticides into water significantly have a negative influence on human health and the environment. Contamination with these pollutants also constitutes a great threat to the aquatic ecosystem. To deal with the harmful impacts of such pollutants, their expulsion has attracted researchers’ interest a lot, and it became essential to figure out techniques suitable for the removal of these pollutants. Thus, many researchers have devoted their efforts to improving the existing technology or providing an alternative strategy to solve this environmental problem. One of the attractive materials for this purpose is metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their superior high surface area, high porosity, and the tunable features of their structures and function. Among various techniques of wastewater treatment, such as biological treatment, advanced oxidation process and membrane technologies, etc., metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are tailorable porous architectures and are viably used as adsorbents or photocatalysts for wastewater treatment due to their porosity, tunable internal structure, and large surface area. MOFs are synthesized by various methods such as solvo/hydrothermal, sonochemical, microwave and mechanochemical methods. Most common method used for the synthesis of MOFs is solvothermal/hydrothermal methods. Herein, this review aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in MOFs and their derivatives, focusing on the following aspects: synthesis and applications. This review comprehensively highlights the application of MOFs and nano-MOFs to remove pharmaceuticals and pesticides from wastewater. For the past years, transition metal-based MOFs have been concentrated as photocatalyst/adsorbents in treating contaminated water. However, work on main group metal-based MOFs is not so abundant. Hence, the foremost objective of this review is to present the latest material and references concerning main group element-based MOFs and nanoscale materials derived from them towards wastewater treatment. It summarizes the possible research challenges and directions for MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts applied to wastewater treatment in the future. With the context of recent pioneering studies on main group elements-based MOFs and their derivatives; we hope to stimulate some possibilities for further development, challenges and future perspectives in this field have been highlighted.

Recent advances in the application of metal organic frameworks using in advanced oxidation progresses for pollutants degradation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with highly ordered and porous crystalline structure, have excellent performance in advanced oxidation progresses (AOPs) for organic contaminants degradation in water treatment. This review intends to summarize the timely references and insights for the recent advances in MOFs that are used in AOPs. Starting with the preparation methodologies, including conventional hydrothermal method, electrochemical method, sol-gel method, and emerging microwave and ultrasound assisted synthesis methods. Application and mechanism for MOFs using in various AOPs of Fenton-like, photocatalysis, catalytic ozonation, persulfate catalysis and other emerging oxidation methods are emphatically discussed. We hope this review can comprehensively summarize the research and application progress of MOFs in AOPs, deepen the understanding of the catalytic mechanisms. Application and mechanism of MOFs in emerging AOPs such as Fenton-like, photocatalysis, catalytic ozonation and persulfate catalysis is reviewed in detail.

State-of-the-art progress of switch fluorescence biosensors based on metal-organic frameworks and nucleic acids.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have captured substantial attention of an increasing number of scientists working in sensing analysis fields, due to their large surface area, high porosity, and tunable structure. Recently, MOFs as attractive fluorescence quenchers have been extensively investigated. Given their high quenching efficiency toward the fluorescence intensity of dyes-labeled specific biological recognition molecules, such as nucleic acids, MOFs have been widely developed to switch fluorescence biosensors with low background fluorescence signal. These strategies not only lead to specificity, simplicity, and low cost of biosensors, but also possess advantages such as ultrasensitive, rapid, and multiple detection of switch fluorescence methods. At present, researches of the analysis of switch fluorescence biosensors based on MOFs and nucleic acids mainly focus on sensing of different types of in vitro and intracellular analytes, indicating their increasing potential. In this review, we briefly introduce the principle of switch fluorescence biosensor and the mechanism of fluorescence quenching of MOFs, and mainly discuss and summarize the state-of-the-art advances of MOFs and nucleic acids-based switch fluorescence biosensors over the years 2013 to 2020. Most of them have been proposed to the in vitro detection of different types of analytes, showing their wide scope and applicability, such as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNAs), ribonucleic acid (RNAs), proteins, enzymes, antibiotics, and heavy metal ions. Besides, some of them have also been applied to the bioimaging of intracellular analytes, emerging their potential for biomedical applications, for example, cellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and subcellular glutathione (GSH). Finally, the remaining challenges in this sensing field and prospects for future research trends are addressed. Graphical abstract.

Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks as Anticancer Drug Delivery Systems: A Review.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as attractive hybrid crystalline porous materials, are being increasingly investigated in biomedical applications owing to their exceptional properties, including high porosity, ultrahigh surface areas, tailorable composition and structure, and tunability and surface functionality. Of interest, in this review, is the design and development of MOF-based drug delivery systems (DDSs) that have excellent biocompatibility, good stability under physiological conditions, high drug loading capacity, and controlled/targeted drug release. This review highlights the latest advances in MOFs as anticancer drug delivery systems (DDSs) along with insights on their design, fabrication, and performance under different stimuli that are either internal or external. The synthesis methods of MOFs, along with their advantages and disadvantages, are briefly discussed. The emergence of multifunctional MOF-based theranostic platforms is also discussed. Finally, the future challenges facing the developments of MOFs in the field of drug delivery are discussed. The review was prepared by carrying out a comprehensive literature survey using relevant work published in various scientific databases. Novel MOFs in biomedical applications, especially in drug delivery, have shown great potential. MOF-based DDSs can be classified into normal (non-controllable) DDSs, stimuli-responsive DDSs, and theranostic platforms. The normal DDSs are pristine MOFs loaded with therapeutic agents and offer little to no control over drug release. Stimuli-responsive DDSs offer better spatiotemporal control over drug release by responding to either endogenous (pH, redox, ions, ATP) or exogenous stimuli (light, magnetism, US, pressure, temperature). The theranostic platforms combine stimuli-responsive drug delivery with diagnostic imaging functionality, paving the road for imaging-guided drug delivery. This review presented a summary of the various methods utilized in MOF's synthesis along with the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Furthermore, the review highlighted and discussed the latest developments in the field of MOF-based DDSs and theranostic platforms. The review is focused on the characteristics of MOF-based DDSs, the encapsulation of different anticancer drugs as well as their stimuli-responsive release.

Recent Advances in Metal Organic Frameworks Based Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates: Synthesis and Applications.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are supramolecular nanomaterials, in which metal ions or clusters are connected by organic ligands to form crystalline lattices with highly ordered periodic porous network structure. MOFs have been widely applied in various fields, such as catalyst, sample preparation, and sensing. In recent years, MOFs based surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have attracted much attention since MOFs can largely improve the performance of metallic SERS substrates toward target enrichment and signal enhancement. MOFs have been exploited in SERS analysis to tackle some challenges that bare metal substrates cannot achieve. Combination of MOFs and SERS improved the sensitivity of traditional SERS analysis and extended the application scope of SERS. With the increasing exploration of MOFs based SERS substrates, there is a great demand to review the advances in these researches. Herein, this review concentrated on summarizing the preparation and applications of MOFs based SERS substrates. Representative researches were discussed to better understand the property of MOFs based SERS substrates. The advantages of MOFs based SERS substrates were highlighted, as well as their limitations. In addition, the challenges, opportunities, and future trends in MOFs based SERS analysis were tentatively discussed.
