Adsorption of poly(oxyethylene) and hydroxyl group-containing nonionic surfactants on silica particles in NH4OH solution and its effect on the interaction force with Si surface

In the semiconductor manufacturing processes, surface cleaning is one of the most critical steps because particle contamination directly affects device yield. In addition, surface etching and oxidation should be minimized during the particle removal process. In this study, the dissolved oxygen concentration (DOC) in an NH4OH solution was reduced to suppress oxidation of Si. Additionally, nonionic surfactants were added to the solution to suppress the Si surface roughening and improve the particle removal efficiency in the NH4OH solution. Nonionic surfactant molecules were adsorbed on the Si surface, preventing the Si surface from attack by OH-. In addition, they were also adsorbed on the silica particle surfaces, producing repulsive hydration and osmotic forces between the adsorbed surfaces of the Si and silica particles while reducing the adhesion force between them. As a result, more than 95 % of particle removal efficiency and less than 0.6 nm of surface roughness were obtained when the particle-contaminated Si surface was treated with a low-DOC NH4OH solution containing a nonionic surfactant.

Synergistic Role of Temperature and Salinity in Aggregation of Nonionic Surfactant-Coated Silica Nanoparticles.

The adsorption of nonionic surfactants onto hydrophilic nanoparticles (NPs) is anticipated to increase their stability in aqueous medium. While nonionic surfactants show salinity- and temperature-dependent bulk phase behavior in water, the effects of these two solvent parameters on surfactant adsorption and self-assembly onto NPs are poorly understood. In this study, we combine adsorption isotherms, dispersion transmittance, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to investigate the effects of salinity and temperature on the adsorption of pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) surfactant on silica NPs. We find an increase in the amount of surfactant adsorbed onto the NPs with increasing temperature and salinity. Based on SANS measurements and corresponding analysis using computational reverse-engineering analysis of scattering experiments (CREASE), we show that the increase in salinity and temperature results in the aggregation of silica NPs. We further demonstrate the non-monotonic changes in viscosity for the C12E5-silica NP mixture with increasing temperature and salinity and correlate the observations to the aggregated state of NPs. The study provides a fundamental understanding of the configuration and phase transition of the surfactant-coated NPs and presents a strategy to manipulate the viscosity of such dispersion using temperature as a stimulus.

Monitoring non-specific adsorption at solid-liquid interfaces by supercritical angle fluorescence microscopy.

Supercritical angle fluorescence (SAF) microscopy is a novel imaging tool based on the use of distance-dependent fluorophore emission patterns to provide accurate locations of fluorophores relative to a surface. This technique has been extensively used to construct accurate cellular images and to detect surface phenomena in a static environment. However, the capability of SAF microscopy in monitoring dynamic surface phenomena and changes in millisecond intervals is underexplored in the literature. Here, we report on a hardware add-on for a conventional inverted microscope coupled with a post-processing Python module that extends the capability of SAF microscopy to monitor dynamic surface adsorption in sub-second intervals, thereby greatly expanding the potential of this tool to study surface interactions, such as surface fouling and competitive surface adhesion. The Python module enables researchers to automatically extract SAF profiles from each image. We first assessed the performance of the system by probing the specific binding of biotin-fluorescein conjugates to a neutravidin-coated cover glass in the presence of non-binding fluorescein. The SAF emission was observed to increase with the quantity of bound fluorophore on the cover glass. However, a high concentration of unbound fluorophore also contributed to overall SAF emission, leading to over-estimation in surface-bound fluorescence. To expand the applications of SAF in monitoring surface phenomena, we monitored the non-specific surface adsorption of BSA and non-ionic surfactants on a Teflon-AF surface. Solution mixtures of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and nine Pluronic/Tetronic surfactants were exposed to a Teflon-AF surface. No significant BSA adsorption was observed in all BSA-surfactant solution mixtures with negligible SAF intensity. Finally, we monitored the adsorption dynamics of BSA onto the Teflon-AF surface and observed rapid BSA adsorption on Teflon-AF surface within 10s of addition. The adsorption rate constant (ka) and half-life of BSA adsorption on Teflon-AF were determined to be 0.419 ± 0.004s-1 and 1.65 ± 0.016s, respectively, using a pseudo-first-order adsorption equation.

Adsorption of Glycyrrhiza glabra natural nonionic surfactant onto the carbonate reservoir rock in the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles surface: Towards enhanced oil recovery

At the moment, about 40% of the current world's crude oil production comes from carbonate reservoirs, completely developed and declining giant oil fields. So, the carbonate reservoirs include large numbers of oil reserves in the world, and the recovery factor of these reservoirs in the primary and secondary steps is around 45%. After the primary and secondary oil production steps, the use of tertiary oil production techniques as a section of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects is an unavoidable issue. In this paper, the main goal of using saponin extracted from the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant as a natural non-ionic surfactant (GG surfactant) with the presence of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles (HISNPs) is to decrease the mobility ratio via reducing the interfacial tension (IFT) value between the water and oil system and mobilizing the crude oil remaining to increase the oil recovery factor. Accordingly, batch adsorption tests under atmospheric conditions at different concentrations and times have been used to comprehend the impact of adsorbate dose on the sorption efficiency. Hence, the electrical conductivity (EC) technique was used to measure the adsorption rate of these materials in the aqueous phase onto the crushed carbonate reservoir rock (adsorbent) surface. The experimental adsorption data were also investigated by various adsorption equilibrium and kinetic models. Therefore, the adsorption parameters were determined for each model. Finally, results showed that the adsorption process of these materials on the adsorbent surface is characterized by a short period of rapid adsorption, followed by a long period of slower adsorption.

ADSORPTION OF ETHOXYLATED ISONONYLPHENOLS ON CARBON NANOTUBES FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

One of the approaches to solving the problem of carbon nanotubes dispersions obtaining is the use of nonionic surfactants in the processes of ultrasonication of carbon nanostructures in aqueous solutions. The effect of nonionic surfactants on dispersing and stabilizing is determined by the adsorption interaction of surfactant molecules with a graphene surface, the study of which can reveal important patterns of stable carbon nanotubes dispersions obtaining during ultrasonic treatment in liquid media. The aim of this work was to study the adsorption of ethoxylated isononylphenols with a variable average degree of ethoxylation on single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes from aqueous solutions. The value of adsorption of nonionic surfactants on carbon nanotubes was calculated on the basis of changes in the equilibrium concentration of ethoxylated isononylphenols in the solution at presence of carbon nanotubes. The equilibrium concentration of nonionic surfactants was determined by absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the shape of adsorption isotherms of the ethoxylated isononylphenols on carbon nanotubes from aqueous solutions before ultrasonic treatment corresponds to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm L2. The values of maximum adsorption of ethoxylated isononylphenols were shown to decrease with an increase in the average degree of ethoxylation. Obviously, this is due to conformational changes in the polar chain, showed in the sizes of ethoxylated isononylphenols micelles, in the structure of the adsorption layer. It has been established that the hydrophobic interaction of the surfactants hydrocarbon radical with a graphene surface is the main mechanism for the adsorption of ethoxylated isononylphenols on carbon nanotubes. The dispersions of carbon nanotubes in micellar solutions of nonionic surfactants were obtained and studied. It was shown that ultrasonic treatment leads to a change in the mechanism of nonionic surfactants adsorption on carbon nanotubes.

Wettability Alteration and Adsorption of Mixed Nonionic and Anionic Surfactants on Carbonates.

Mixed-surfactant systems consisting of secondary alcohol ethoxylates and anionic sulfonates are evaluated as wettability alteration agents for enhanced oil recovery. The cloud points of the nonionic surfactants are raised by the addition of the sulfonates. The oil/water interfacial tension and contact angles of oil on initially oil-wet calcite are reported at different temperatures and surfactant compositions. Adsorption experiments are performed for select mixed systems at high temperatures. The extent of the increase in the cloud point, changes in the contact angle, and adsorption are influenced by co-surfactants, surfactant concentrations, and temperatures. Mixed surfactant systems were identified which modified the oil-wet surface to a water-wet surface with final contact angles as low as 70°. Mixed surfactants exhibit a linear trend in adsorption and wettability alteration with the thermodynamic descriptor of cloud point temperature difference, which has been used previously for single surfactants. These findings enable the design of surfactant formulations for wettability alteration in high temperature, high salinity reservoirs.

ADSORPTION BEHAVIOUR OF IONIC AND NON-IONIC SURFACTANTS ONTO TALC A NATURALLY HYDROPHOBIC MINERAL-A COMPARATIVE STUDY

In present study, the adsorption behaviour of surfactants which are cationic (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, HTAB), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulphate, SDS) and non-ionic (Triton X-100, TX-100) onto naturally hydrophobic talc were investigated. In this scope, a series of batch adsorption tests at natural pH were performed to determine adsorption isotherms and zeta potential (ZP) measurements of the ionic and non-ionic surfactants onto talc surfaces were measured using electrophoresis technique. To understand the mechanism of the adsorption process, the adsorption of ionic and non-ionic surfactants was studied as a function equilibrium concentration (mol/L). The amount of maximum adsorption of the surfactants onto talc are ordered as in the following: TX-100 (9.0x10-5 mol/m2)>HTAB (8.5x10-5 mol/m2) > SDS (5.32x10-5 mol/m2). Even though both the SDS and talc have negative surface charge, SDS can adsorb onto talc. Moreover, a good correlation was seen between the adsorption isotherms and the zeta potential curves. Considering their adsorption isotherms, the ionic surfactants were showed different adsorption behaviour concerning the non-ionic surfactant molecules. The adsorption isotherms of TX-100 and SDS increase rapidly in a narrow concentration range until the plateau region, while such a sharp increase does not appear for HTAB. The maximum adsorption amount of TX-100 and HTAB is greater than SDS. The results indicate that hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding play a decisive role on the adsorption of non-ionic and anionic surfactants onto talc a naturally hydrophobic mineral, whereas electrostatic interaction becomes more important in the adsorption of cationic surfactant.

Effect of non-ionic surfactants on the adsorption of polycyclic aromatic compounds at water/oil interface: A molecular simulation study

HypothesisMolecular simulations can provide unique insights into the adsorption and intermolecular interactions of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and non-ionic surfactants at water/oil interface. MethodsMolecular dynamic simulations were performed to study the adsorption of PACs at water/oil interface, and the effect of adding non-ionic surfactants. PAC architecture, solvent type, structure and concentration of non-ionic surfactants were varied to address the complex interplay between PAC-surfactant interaction, PAC solubility, and structure-dependent PAC aggregation. FindingsPACs with multiple cores (PacM) partially adsorbed on the interface, in the form of small and loosely structured aggregates. Adding non-ionic surfactant Brij-93 induced desorption of PacM at both water/toluene and water/heptane interfaces. Another non-ionic surfactant, (EO)5(PO)10(EO)5, also reduced the adsorption of PacM at water/toluene interface but enhanced their adsorption at water/heptane interface. PACs with a single large core strongly adsorbed on both interfaces, forming compact aggregated structures. Adding the two types of non-ionic surfactants did not induce desorption. This work identified two opposite roles of non-ionic surfactants in the adsorption of PACs, namely competition and co-adsorption, and provided useful insights into how the roles of non-ionic surfactants might be affected by their concentration, as well as the solubility and interfacial behaviors of the PACs.

The Role of Chemical Heterogeneity in Surfactant Adsorption at Solid-Liquid Interfaces.

Chemical heterogeneity of solid surfaces disrupts the adsorption of surfactants from the bulk liquid. While its presence can hinder the performance of some formulations, bespoke chemical patterning could potentially facilitate controlled adsorption for nanolithography applications. Although some computational studies have investigated the impact of regularly patterned surfaces on surfactant adsorption, in reality, many interesting surfaces are expected to be stochastically disordered and this is an area unexplored via simulations. In this paper, we describe a new algorithm for the generation of randomly disordered chemically heterogeneous surfaces and use it to explore the adsorption behavior of four model nonionic surfactants. Using novel analysis methods, we interrogate both the global surface coverage (adsorption isotherm) and behavior in localized regions. We observe that trends in adsorption characteristics as surfactant size, head/tail ratio, and surface topology are varied and connect these to underlying physical mechanisms. We believe that our methods and approach will prove useful to researchers seeking to tailor surface patterns to calibrate nonionic surfactant adsorption.

Adsorption of non-ionic surfactants on organoclays in drilling fluid investigated by molecular descriptors and Monte Carlo random walk simulations

Non-ionic surfactants have been used as a rheology control additive in drilling fluids to prevent flocculation of solids, such as organoclays, and maintain mud dispersion. Here, the fundamental phenomena involved in non-ionic surfactant adsorption on organoclays and how it affects the rheology of synthetic-based drilling fluids were elucidated by the analysis of molecular descriptors and Monte Carlo simulations. Using the Random Forests machine learning algorithm software, the non-ionic surfactant adsorption on organoclays was found to be affected mainly by the hydrophobicity and molecular shape of hydrophobic chains of non-ionic surfactants. Molecular descriptor calculations indicated that the hydrophobic interaction and van der Waals forces are dominant factors. Then, the Monte Carlo simulations provided the empirical effect of the non-ionic surfactant hydrophobic chains on their self-assembly to organoclays. Molecules with two chains were found to be easily adsorbed to the surface due to molecular size, while molecules with three and four chains occupy more sites and interact with each other more frequently, forming larger clusters. Consequently, non-ionic surfactants with more hydrophobic chains were predicted to improve rheology of drilling fluids and form stable mud emulsions. This approach is useful in predicting the effects of new additive in drilling fluid formulation.

Adsorption of non-ionic surfactant and monoclonal antibody on siliconized surface studied by neutron reflectometry

The adsorption of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) on hydrophobic surfaces is known to cause protein aggregation and degradation. Therefore, surfactants, such as Poloxamer 188, are widely used in therapeutic formulations to stabilize mAbs and protect mAbs from interacting with liquid-solid interfaces. Here, the adsorption of Poloxamer 188, one mAb and their competitive adsorption on a model hydrophobic siliconized surface is investigated with neutron scattering coupled with contrast variation to determine the molecular structure of adsorbed layers for each case. Small angle neutron scattering measurements of the affinity of Poloxamer 188 to this mAb indicate that there is negligible binding at these solution conditions. Neutron reflectometry measurements of the mAb show irreversible adsorption on the siliconized surface, which cannot be washed off with neat buffer. Poloxamer 188 can be adsorbed on the surface already occupied by mAb, which enables partial removal of some adsorbed mAb by washing with buffer. The adsorption of the surfactant introduces significant conformational changes for mAb molecules that remain on the surface. In contrast, if the siliconized surface is first saturated with the surfactant, no adsorption of mAb is observed. Competitive adsorption of mAb and Poloxamer 188 from solution leads to a surface dominantly occupied with surfactant molecules, whereas only a minor amount of mAb absorbs. These findings clearly indicate that Poloxamer 188 can protect against mAb adsorption as well as modify the adsorbed conformation of previously adsorbed mAb.

Fly ash based geopolymer for the adsorption of cationic and nonionic surfactants from aqueous solution – A feasibility study

The discharge of wastewaters containing surfactants and other pollutants from industries is contaminating the world’s water resources which needs remediation. This paper describes the adsorption of cationic and nonionic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and Triton X-100 (TX-100) using fly ash based geoepolymer adsorbent. pH was varied between 2 and 10. Geopolymer could not adsorb CTAB and TX-100 surfactants. This was due to the low hydrophobicity of the geopolymer and the weak nature of forces involved in the adsorption of cationic and nonionic surfactants. The modification of the geopolymer with suitable metals or compounds could potentially enable it to adsorb CTAB and TX-100 surfactants.

Improving the performance of lime-sand finishing mixes

In many regions of the world, there are significant reserves of polymineral clays with a predominance of montmorillonite. Despite this, there is a lack of scientific research on the use of polymineral clays to modify and improve the properties of dry mortar mixes. The novelty of the article is to identify the scientific patterns of the influence of organomineral additives on the structure formation of wall finishing products. The organomineral additive based on polymineral clays with a high content of montmorillonite was prepared in the form of new composition, based on which dry mortar mix for interior decoration of walls of buildings with improved strength properties and operational characteristics was created. It was established that the adsorption of an organic additive promotes hydrophilization of the clay surface and an increase in its effective specific surface. The formulation of an organomineral additive for dry mortar mixes was developed, which promotes the adsorption of anionic and nonionic surfactants on the surface of polymineral clays with a high content of montmorillonite. In addition, the microstructural, morphological properties and XRD data of the researched materials were determined. The composition of the dry mortar mix designed for internal finishing work and containing lime, quartz sand fraction 0.63–0.16 and organomineral additive was developed. The following indicators characterize the finishing layer based on the developed mix: adhesive strength Radh = 0.60–0.76 MPa, cohesive strength Rcoh = 0.35–0.36 MPa, vapor permeability µ = 0.055–0.058 mg / m·h·Pa, conditional ratio crack resistance Ccr = 0.54–0.58, water absorption by weight Wm = 12.29–13.62%, elastic modulus E = 40–50 MPa, shrinkage deformation ɛ = 0.020–0.034%. The calculation in the SCAD Office software proved that the developed dry mortar mixes satisfy the crack resistance conditions of the finishing composites and can be used for decorative interior decoration of building walls.

Aggregate Morphology and Aqueous Dispersibility of Spray-Dried Powders of Cellulose Nanocrystals

Spray drying is the most cost-efficient technology to produce bulk quantities of dry cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from acid hydrolyzed CNC suspensions. Spray drying results in the aggregation of CNC particles in granular material which is difficult to redisperse in water to individual particles. In this research, we investigated cospray drying of CNC suspensions with nonionic surfactant (10-mol ethoxylated octylphenol) at different concentrations and the role of this nonionic surfactant on the redispersion of spray-dried granular CNC particles. Dispersions of spray-dried CNC powder samples in water were investigated under static, mechanically stirred, and ultrasound-assisted mixing conditions. The granular morphology of spray-dried CNCs was affected by the concentration of nonionic surfactant. Overall, the formations of hollow and blistered particles in the presence of 5 and 10 mM OPE-100 were attributed to interactions between nonionic surfactant and CNCs which cause a reduction in the repulsion of nanoparticles during the shrinking of spray drying droplets. Higher light transmission properties, improved dispersion stability, and narrower particle size distribution of spray-dried CNC suspensions were achieved with the incorporation of nonionic surfactant at 5 and 10 mM prior to spray drying. These results are explained by the presence of hollow particles and by the increased interparticle interaction distance of CNCs due to weak and reversible adsorption of nonionic surfactant. Therefore, the addition of a nonionic surfactant is an attractive approach to control granular particle morphology and aqueous redispersion of CNC granular powder. Such results are of particular significance in the commercialization and process optimization for the manufacture of CNCs.

Giant Vesicles with Encapsulated Magnetic Nanowires as Versatile Carriers, Transported via Rotating and Nonhomogeneous Magnetic Fields

AbstractTwo real‐time methods to transport magnetic nanowires confined in giant hybrid vesicles upon the application of different strategies are studied. The microscale carriers are either magnetically guided through the viscous medium by a nonhomogenous field or advected by precisely monitored hydrodynamic flows. The slender geometry of the magnetic component enables the application of large torques, the in situ characterization of the rotational dynamics, as well as the guided propulsion via the continuous thrust of the nanowire tip on the confining bilayer. The flexibility of the vesicles, required to deform along the steering direction during passage through microscale openings, is enhanced via the adsorption of nonionic surfactants on the lipid membrane. The resulting integrated system is an excellent candidate to transport colloidal cargos or fluid amounts of some picoliters in microfluidic platforms, even in physiological environments, since it combines the maneuverability of propelled microscopic systems and the protection conferred by the vesicle.

Adsorption of Triton X-100 in aqueous solution on activated carbon obtained from waste tires for wastewater decontamination

Adsorption of Triton X-100 non-ionic surfactant in aqueous solution on activated carbon was performed. The activated carbon was prepared from waste tires by chemical impregnation at 10, 20, 30, and 40% w·w−1 of potassium hydroxide. Two carbonization temperatures, 700 and 900° C were used with a heating rate of 2 °C·min−1 and a 3 h retention time in N2 flow of 100 mL·min−1. The carbons obtained were characterized by N2 adsorption at − 196 °C, scanning electron microscopy, infrared microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and titration of functional groups. In adsorption studies of Triton X-100, the amount of adsorbed Triton X-100 was characterized by High-performance Liquid Chromatography and Langmuir, Freundlich, Toth, and Redlich-Peterson models were evaluated. The solids showed an area between 42 and 528 m2·g−1 with characteristic isotherms of micro-mesoporous solids, and a pore distribution of 7.0 to 8.0 A by Dubinin-Astakov with a chemical surface having acid and basic groups. The carbon that adsorbed the most Triton X-100 was QK409 with Q0 220 mg·g−1.

Mixed Adsorption of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide and Triton X-100 Surfactants on Carbon Black

Adsorption of cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and nonionic Triton X100 surfactants from their mixed aqueous solutions on graphitized carbon black (CB) have been studied. The adsorption isotherms of CTAB or Triton X100 from single solutions on CB surface shown to be of the Langmuir type. In the mixed solutions of CTAB and Triton X100 surfactants, the adsorption of CTAB or Triton X100 on CB decreased in the presence of the other surfactant due to competitive adsorption of the components. It was shown that the mole fraction of Triton X-100 on CB surface has been essentialy changed depending on total concentration of the surfactants mixture. At mixture concentration corresponding to the unsaturated monolayer, a strong synergetic effect was found when the surface excess concentration Triton X100 at the CB surface in the presence of CTAB is higher than that for Triton X-100 in the absence of CTAB.

The Influence of Nonionic Surfactant Adsorption on Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Oil Palm Fruit Bunch.

Nonionic surfactants have been utilized to improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials. However, the role of surfactant adsorption affecting enzymatic hydrolysis has not been elaborated well. In this work, nonionic surfactants differing in their molecular structures, namely the polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80), the secondary alcohol ethoxylate (Tergitol 15-S-9), and the branched alcohol ethoxylate (Tergitol TMN-6), were studied for their effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis of palm fruit bunch (PFB). The PFB was pretreated with a 10% w/v sodium hydroxide solution and then hydrolyzed using the cellulase enzyme from Trichoderma reesei (ATCC 26921) at 50°C and pH5. The optimal conditions providing similar yields of reducing sugar required Tween 80 and Tergitol TMN-6 at 0.25% w/v, while Tergitol 15-S-9 was required at 0.1% w/v. All the surfactants improved the enzymatic conversion efficiency and reduced unproductive binding of the enzyme to lignin. In addition, the adsorption isotherm of cellulase was fit well by the Freundlich isotherm, while adsorption of the three nonionic surfactants agreed well with the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption capacities of the three nonionic surfactants were consistent with their enhancement efficiencies in hydrolysis. The critical micelle concentration was observed as a key property of nonionic surfactant for adsorption capacity.

The effect of ionisation of silica nanoparticles on their binding to nonionic surfactants in oil–water system: an atomistic molecular dynamic study

ABSTRACTIn this study, the adsorption of nonionic surfactant, triethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E3), on a surface of silica nanoparticle (NP) has been studied with variation in the degree of ionisation (DI) of silica NP using all-atom molecular dynamic simulations in hexadecane–water system. Hydrogen bonding is found to be responsible for the adsorption of C12E3 on NP, particularly at low DI. We observe that with increasing DI of NP, the amount of adsorption of C12E3 on NP reduces, which is negligible beyond DI ∼ 0.5. The decrease in the adsorption with increasing DI is due to the decrease in the number of hydrogen bonds formed by the silica NP with surfactant molecules. Potential of mean force (PMF) profiles indicate attractive interactions between NP and C12E3 for DI < 0.5, and for larger DI depletion effect is observed. This work explains the unusual effect of nonionic surfactant on interfacial tension in the presence of silica particles as observed in recent experiments.

Graphene oxide nanomaterials for the removal of non-ionic surfactant from water

The presence of surfactants in aquatic environment is a major public health concern. Recently, several methods have been developed to remove these compounds, among these are the adsorption processes. The great challenge of this technology is to achieve high removal capacities, fast adsorption and efficient adsorbent recoveries. The aim of our study was to synthesize GO and rGO and use them for non-ionic surfactant (TX-100) adsorption in consecutive cycles. Both nanomaterials were synthesized and characterized by several analyses including BET method for superficial area, XRD, Raman Spectroscopy, CP/MAS 13C NMR, TGA, FT-IR, XPS, SEM and TEM microscopies. The optimization of the adsorption process was performed by varying many parameters, including the experiment time, nanomaterials/surfactant ratio, temperature, pH and ultrasound irradiation. GO and rGO showed fast TX-100 adsorption, about 30 min to reach equilibrium. The experiments showed that the pH variation affects the removal efficiency for both nanomaterials with pH 6 being the optimized condition. The pseudo-second order kinetic model showed the best fit to the experimental data for both nanomaterials. The equilibrium data for GO and rGO were fitted to the Fowler-Guggenheim and the Langmuir models, respectively. The rGO was verified as the best adsorbent for TX-100 removal, suggesting that hydrophobic and π-stacking interactions are dominant in the process. Besides the superior adsorption efficiency, rGO formed larger aggregates after TX-100 removal than GO, facilitating its separation from solution. Under optimized conditions, GO and rGO revealed superior removal capacities when compared to others adsorbents (1203 and 1683 mg/g, respectively).
