Adoption of Scientific Practices in Fish Farming in Telangana State, India

The study was undertaken in six districts of Telangana state viz. Karimnagar, Kamareddy, Medak, Wanaparthy, Mahabubabad and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri during 2019-2022 with an aim to study the extent of adoption of scientific fish farming practices. Ten fish farmers were selected from each of the selected districts using simple random sampling technique thus constituting 60 fish farmers. A structured questionnaire was used to collect responses about the adoption of scientific fish farming specifically based on preliminary survey as well as focus group discussions. The results depicted that nearly half (48.33%) had medium level of adoption followed by high (38.33%) and low (13.34%) level of adoption respectively. The variables such as fish farming experience, annual income, Pond size, Economic motivation and innovativeness reflected the strong association and effect on the extent of adoption.

Impact of frontline demonstration (FLD) and trainings on knowledge and adoption level of mustard growers of Western Rajasthan

Agricultural Research Station, Mandor organized five, two days on-campus trainings, 100 frontline demonstrations (FLDs) and five field days for selected 480 mustard growers during 2016-17. One hundred farmers comprising of 20 from each block i.e. Nagaur, Maulasar, Jalore, Barmer and Jodhpur were selected purposively for the study. It was observed that the farmers adopted new high yielding variety, seed treatment, crop rotation, integrated nutrient management, plant protection measures and used recommended seed rate after undergoing the trainings. The results also revealed that due to enhanced knowledge and adoption of scientific practices, the yield of mustard increased from 11.1 to 29.2% over the yield obtained under farmer's practices during the year 2016-17. The extension gap (167-416 kg/ha), technological gap (84-967 kg/ha) and technology index (4.20-42.04%) exhibited the feasibility of demonstrated technology. The farmers under medium and higher level of knowledge groups increased from 20 to 52% and from 15 to 31%, respectively. Besides, the adoption level increased from 18 to 63% and 9 to 17% in medium level and high level, respectively. Further, farmers under low level of adoption declined from 73 to 20%. Thus, this study suggests the need of conducting intensive trainings and FLDs to educate the mustard growers for achieving higher production of mustard in the western districts of Rajasthan.

Adoption of Scientific Practices of Small Ruminants at A Village in Rajasthan: A Pra Study

Adoption behaviour of farmers towards small ruminant technologies was studied during J une, 2015 with the help of PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) techniques in Soda village (Tehsil Malpura, Tonk) in Rajasthan. Matrix ranking technique was used to assess the important technologies of small ruminant rearing as well as major constraints faced by them. Study revealed that all the farmers were adopting vaccination against enterotoxaemia, sheep pox, peste des petits ruminants and foot and mouth disease. Fifty percent of farmers were providing concentrate feed to ewe during pregnancy and lactation. A few (5.56%) farmers were growing grasses and planting trees (anjan grass, ardu tree and ber bush) for small ruminants. Majority of farmers were rearing Kheri sheep, but were interested in Patanwadi sheep. Seasonal analysis revealed that farmers remained busy with different small ruminant practices throughout the year except in January. Lack of grazing land, local market, proper shed and trough facilities were the common problems faced by farmers.

Comparative Growth Performance of Vembur Sheep in Its Breeding Tract

Growth performance of Vembur sheep breed under farm (Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu) and farmers ’flocks in its home tract (Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts) was studied. The birth weights of lambs maintained in the Instructional farm were 2.80±0.03 and 2.67±0.03 kg, respectively for males and females. The corresponding values in the farmers ’flocks were 2.72±0.06 and 2.57±0.03 kg, respectively. The overall average daily gains during 0–12 months of age at Instructional farm and farmers ’holdings were 53.50±1.12 and 50.05±2.39 g, respectively for male lambs and 50.10±0.84 and 45.97±1.07 g respectively for female lambs. Provision of better nutrition, health care and strict adoption of scientific practices is essential for higher average daily t gain under field conditions.

Study on behavioural changes among women SHGs and their impact on adoption of scientific practices in dairying

The study brings out the evaluation of behavioural construct of 56 members from four self help groups (SHGs) in Karnal district of Haryana, India at two point of time (before and after situation). Comparison of the mean values of both before and after situation using t-statistics (values ranging from 2.25 to 5.50) indicated the positive trend of members for improving their livelihood options. Members were imparted training on scientific dairy farming (SDF) and milk products preparation (MPP). The data revealed that most of the women adopted the SDF practices and MPP technologies which have increased their income through sale of milk and indirectly saving of money by milk products prepared at home. An innovative model involving fortnightly interaction between experts and farm women over a period of 2 to 3 years through group dynamics approach could not only bring a sustainable dairy farming but also a responsible citizenship among villagers.

Feeding practices followed by sheep farmers in sub-tropical zone of Jammu and Kashmir

A study was conducted to find out the sheep feeding practices and extent of adoption of scientific feeding practices by the sheep owners in the sub-tropical zone of Jammu and Kashmir. From 12 villages (belonging to two districts), 120 respondents were selected for the study. Majority of the respondents (68.33%) followed sole grazing system. Creep ration was provided to lambs by only 16.67% of the respondents. Majority (83.33%) of the respondents allowed lambs suckling on dam's milk for more than six weeks. Concentrate mixture to sheep was offered by 35.00% of respondents. Flushing ration to the breeding ewes was provided by 35.00% of the respondents. Mineral mixture and vitamin supplementation to sheep was practiced by only 10% of the respondents. The feeding of cultivated green fodder to sheep was always practised by 31.67% of the respondents. Majority of the respondents (55.83%) had low adoption of scientific feeding practices. There is a great need to improve the adoption of scientific practices by increasing and strengthening the extension activities in the area.
