Adoption of Digital Technologies as a Driver for Cost Leadership Strategy in Tour Firms within Nairobi City County, Kenya

Digital technologies play a major role in reducing the cost of operations in tour firms. The main focus of the study was to find out the adoption of digital technologies as a driver of cost leadership strategy in tour firms within Nairobi City County. The specific objective was to investigate the influence of mobile applications on cost leadership strategy in tour firms in Nairobi City County. Embedded research design was applied in the study. The study adopted the null hypothesis that mobile applications had no statistically significant influence on cost leadership strategy in tour firms within Nairobi City County. The study population was 278 tour firms obtained from the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO) list where a sample of 164 tour firms were selected through the application of Yemane’s (1967) sample size formula. 10 tour firm mangers were selected for interviews. Systematic random sampling was utilized for the determination of the sample size of 164 tour firms. Semi-structured questionnaires and interview schedules were utilized as data instruments. Questionnaires were filled by tour consultants while interviews were conducted with tour firm managers. 133 respondents filled out the questionnaires representing 81% response rate while 7 interviewees were conducted representing 70% response rate. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used during data analysis. The study utilized both ANOVA and multiple regression tests to test the hypotheses, and influence between the adoption of digital technology and cost leadership strategy. The results of the R Square equals 0.919 therefore revealing that 91.9% of cost leadership is attributed to mobile applications. The study confirmed there was a statistical significance (p =.000) between mobile applications and cost leadership. Mobile applications as a digital technology tool accounted for a positive significant increase (B = 637) in cost leadership strategy. The study concluded that there is a positive strong influence between the adoption of mobile applications and cost leadership strategy. The study recommends that tour firms should fully adopt digital technologies to maximize cost control, minimize marketing costs, and promote operational efficiency

Understanding store-loyal customers’ mobile channel migration: a trust-transfer perspective

PurposeRetailers have recently leveraged store-loyal customers’ store attachment to maintain customer relationships and motivate patronage intentions. However, the COVID-19 outbreak has driven customer migration from offline to mobile channels. Mobile retail applications (APPs) have been used by numerous retailers to reach their customers. Nonetheless, it has yet to be determined (1) whether store attachment can facilitate (or impede) the adoption of mobile retail APPs and (2) whether store-loyal customers will continue visiting offline stores in the post-pandemic era. To address these questions, we propose a theoretical account using integrated theories on trust transfer and store attachment.Design/methodology/approachWe conducted multi-stage, longitudinal field surveys in two cities of mainland China: Beijing and Guangzhou. From two rounds of data collection, 237 and 103 responses were obtained in March 2022. Hypotheses were tested by partial least squares – structural equation modelling (PLS–SEM).FindingsResults showed that customer trust in an offline retailer can be transferred to the retailer’s mobile APP at the pre-adoption stage, facilitating APP adoption. Notably, store-loyal customers who exhibited a strong attachment to the physical store of a retailer were more inclined to transfer their trust to the mobile APP of the retailer. This occurrence leads to an increased adoption rate, enhanced post-adoption satisfaction and increased inclination to continue (rather than discontinue) usage.Originality/valueThis study is the first to investigate the changes in store-loyal customers' shopping behaviour in the mobile retail era and in the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery. Our findings elucidate the role of physical store attachment in the trust-transfer mechanism. Furthermore, store attachment may not prevent customers’ channel migration behaviour. Retailers may have to re-consider how to manage channel cannibalisation issues in the post-pandemic recovery.

Determinants of mobile application adoption among micro-entrepreneurs

Background: Since the onset of the global pandemic, unemployment has increased to new levels. As a consequence, the need to stimulate economic growth through the development of the micro-enterprise sector has become a central vehicle to decrease unemployment and stimulate economic growth. The problem, however, is that despite the potential benefits of digitisation, the micro-enterprise sector has been unable to effectively integrate information and communication technologies (ICTs) into the fabric of their operations.Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the adoption and use of mobile applications for micro-enterprise operations in South Africa.Method: A quantitative methodology using a survey design was used to collect data from a sample of entrepreneurs, with 221 responses.Results: Performance expectancy (PE) and effort expectancy (EE) positively influence the micro-entrepreneurs’ behavioural intention (BI) to adopt and use mobile applications, while social influence (SI) has no impact on the same. Facilitating conditions (FC) and BI are the strongest determinants of mobile application adoption and use for micro-enterprise operations.Conclusion: All the constructs of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model showed a satisfactory level of reliability and discriminant validity, which was confirmed by testing the measurement model against two competing models. The UTAUT model is a good predictor of the intention to adopt and use mobile applications for micro-enterprise operations.Contribution: The findings provide parameters to develop a focussed strategy to catalyse the adoption and subsequent use of mobile applications among micro-entrepreneurs. It further informs initiatives to close the gap of a known reluctance in using technology among micro-enterprises.

Adoption of mobile application for enhancing learning in higher education: Students’ views from the State University of Zanzibar, Tanzania

Mobile (m)-learning is a technology-enhanced learning approach utilizing mobile technologies to facilitate learning. Despite significant attention from previous researchers, there is a lack of adequate studies about student’s usage and perceptions of m-learning in Zanzibar’s’ higher learning institutions (HLIs). In this study, the researchers explored the specific activities undertaken by students through the m-learning system, the students’ perceptions on the usefulness and ease of use of m-learning system, and the challenges they faced at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). The study used the survey method with descriptive statistical analysis and examined 240 randomly selected participating in the m-learning initiative. The findings indicate that 96.7% of participants easily used the system to navigate learning resources, 92.9% viewed assignments, and 94.6% took quizzes. Additionally, the majority of the respondents showed a positive attitude regarding the usefulness and ease of use of the system. However, 57% of participants experienced challenges, including unreliable internet connectivity and system incompatibility with some of their devices. The findings of this study will help HLIs like SUZA to find better strategies to improve m-learning, especially pedagogical features and awareness among students. Moreover, the study underscores the importance of more research to discover factors that influence m-learning adoption in Africa HLIs.

Mobile Assisted Language Learning Needs Assessment in Secondary Education

Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) has entered students' educational life with a rising momentum. For this reason, it is necessary to determine the needs of English language curricula, teachers, and students in terms of mobile-assisted language learning. In this study, a convergent parallel design of mixed methods was used. The study group of research consists of 130 high school students and 5 teachers working in secondary education institutions. A mobile application adoption scale was used for the data collected from the students. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers. As a result of the research, it was concluded that students find mobile applications useful and adopt them, and teachers need to be informed about the MALL. It was also found that mobile applications should support the target learning outcomes and cover all four language skills.

The conclusion of this study underscores the importance of a deep understanding of the crucial role of mobile applications in shaping the future of responsive, efficient, and innovative business and consumer services.

A contextual ICT model to explain adoption of mobile applications in developing countries: A case study of Tunisia.

In Tunisia, agriculture is the main source of livelihood for more than 75% of small and subsistence farmers with minimal use of technology. The use of information and communication technology (ICT),such as mobile applications, represents a pertinent opportunity for these smallholders to access agricultural innovation and market information and improve their farming technologies and farm management. Thus, ICT can act as a replacement to foster access to innovation for this category of farmers. Unfortunately, the underuse of mobile applications has contributed to low and slow adoption of agricultural innovation and consequently the benefits of this technology have not been attained. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the adoption of Short Message Service (SMS) through a contextual ICT model for livestock, olive crop, and beekeeping. Data were collected from 200 small-scale beekeepers, 225 olive growers, and 140 livestock breeders selected in Jendouba, Kairouan, and Zaghouan in Tunisia. The objective of this paper is to examine the factors that influence mobile applications using the partial least squares structural equation modelling technique, for livestock, olive crop, and beekeeping agricultural activities. The results showed that the final ICT-induced structural models were highly predictive of the use of SMS and its increased adoption. Factors affecting the use of SMS differed according to the farming system. The major perceived factor affecting the use of SMS was 'observability' for livestock farmers, 'compatibility' for olive growers, and 'information quality' for beekeepers. Understanding these factors by taking into account the specificity of the agricultural activity leads to a better understanding of the adoption of ICT tools by smallholder farmers in Tunisia.

The impact of mobile applications on airline ticket purchasing behavior: a quasi-experiment

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the causal inferences between mobile application adoption and changes in travelers’ purchasing behavior regarding services supported by the travel and tourism industry.Design/methodology/approachUsing a quasi-experiment conducted by an airline, data sets from more than 10,000 travelers were collected, and hypotheses were tested using propensity score matching and difference-in-difference methods.FindingsMobile application adoption has a significant positive effect on the total purchasing frequency of services and a significant adverse effect on booking tickets in advance and purchasing frequency from self-owned websites. Besides, this finding also suggested that members or travelers who had high average purchases in the past tend to buy more air tickets on average after mobile application adoption, while the number of days to book tickets in advance and purchase auxiliary services declined after mobile application adoption. However, males purchased more auxiliary services via mobile applications.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is based on the causal effect of mobile application adoption on purchasing behavior. Nevertheless, the theoretical basis remains relatively weak. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms that cause the changes in purchasing behavior via mobile applications need to be elucidated.Practical implicationsThis study enriches the hospitality and tourism literature on mobile application adoptions, multichannel purchasing behavior and revenue management. First, a quasi-experimental design is used to verify a causal relationship between mobile applications’ adoption and travelers’ purchasing behavior in the travel and tourism industry. Second, this study adds to examining travelers’ multichannel purchasing behavior in the travel and tourism industry. Third, this work enriches the current literature that explores auxiliary services and revenue management in the travel industry.Originality/valueMobile application adoption significantly impacted the travel and tourism industry. Besides, To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first empirical studies that examined changes in purchasing behavior due to mobile application adoption from the perspective of service type. The findings provide the first evidence of the impact of mobile application adoption on service purchasing in the travel industry.

An Empirical Examination of Factors Influencing the Intention to Use Tawakkalna App

In recent years, a global surge in mobile application adoption has led to the development of innovative digital solutions spanning multiple domains. The Tawakkalna application, particularly significant during periods of curfew, is one such innovation, offering manifold benefits that support users in their daily activities. This study aims to investigate the determinants influencing the continuous usage intention of Tawakkalna app users within the theoretical framework of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A purposive sample of 320 users of the Tawakkalna app was employed for the study. The data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings indicate that the simplicity of the application's features emerged as a pivotal determinant of the users' intention to persistently use and endorse the app. Moreover, the research highlights that application simplicity influences user intention through two key mechanisms - Perceived Ease-to-Use and Perceived Usefulness. These insights offer valuable guidance to developers and stakeholders, underscoring the need to prioritize user-friendly design and utility in the iterative development of mobile applications to ensure sustained user engagement and recommendation.

"It's Another Feather in My Hat"-Exploring Factors Influencing the Adoption of Apps With People Living With Dementia.

With the growing interest and availability of mobile applications (apps) for people living with dementia, it is desirable to have a broader insight into how technology adoption may be further improved. This paper aims to explore the factors influencing adoption of mobile applications for people living with dementia. The recruitment of participants was facilitated through a dementia advocacy group of people living with dementia. A focus group design was applied to elicit discussion and to explore divergent views on the topic. The data was analysed using thematic analysis. The 15 individuals who participated in this study comprised of seven women and eight men within the age range of 60-90years. This study reports key findings pertaining to the views and experiences of using mobile apps. Data analysis revealed the following four distinct themes; (Theme 1: Living with dementia)-"That's the difficulty there even with apps or anything else." (Theme 2: Motivation)- "It makes me feel good. I feel a little with it [laughs], that its not all gone in there" (Theme 3: Fears and Concerns)- "Can somebody else get into your personal memories?" (Theme 4- Support)- "So it's important that we have that support". Together these themes encapsulate the most influential aspects, as highlighted by the participants influencing the acceptance and adoption of apps. This paper explores the barriers and facilitators to app acceptance and adoption. This includes the importance of "feel good moments" and positive experiences, challenges associated with living with dementia, the importance of ongoing support, and security of the user's information. This study adds to what is already known by capturing the views and experiences of people living with dementia in relation to the factors influencing the adoption of apps.

Cross-border ageing in China’s Greater Bay Area in the digital age: A comparative study of mobile application adoption by Hong Kong older migrants and local older adults in Shenzhen

This study lies in the burgeoning literature on the contextual effects of the adoption of mobile applications (apps) on the everyday lives and integration of older migrants into a host society, taking the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in South China as a case. Despite recent advocacy of healthy ageing and regional integration, most GBA studies related to cross-border ageing have focused on welfare portability instead of the everyday life adaptation of older migrants through use of digital technologies. This article investigates and compares how mobile apps have facilitated/hindered the integration of Hong Kong older migrants in Shenzhen, through a comparative investigation of mobile app adoption between Hong Kong older migrants and local Shenzhen older adults. A mixed-method approach is adopted including focus group meetings with Hong Kong older migrants living in Shenzhen, and questionnaire surveys with Shenzhen local older adults between September 2021 and March 2022. The study sheds light on two major findings. First, facing the highly digitalized Shenzhen, Hong Kong older migrants have caught up more with using instrumental apps (e.g. mobile payment), as compared with recreational, informational, and open (one-to-many) communication apps. Second, Hong Kong older migrants have emphasized the use of apps for cross-border interactions. The digital gaps in terms of different using patterns of mobile apps highlight Hong Kong older migrants’ lack of socio-cultural integration and feeling of separation from the host society. This study advocates for more active involvement of older migrants’ specific needs in designing mobile apps. Multi-scalar cooperation among various localities in the GBA region is deemed important for older migrants to further integrate into the host society with the widespread use of digital technologies in everyday life.

In this paper, the authors proposed a new framework for Mobile application adoption by unorganized retailers. Unorganized retail is a renowned retail business in India. Unorganized retail is a so-called low-cost retail format where some of the retail stores are Kirana store, Grocery store, provisional store, ready to eat store, mom & pop store, peddlers, Hawkers, and stationery store. Retailers face stiff competition from omnichannel, multi-channel retailers, and e-tailers. To counter this competition, unorganized retailers adopt some Mobile applications which are relevant to their business. While some of the Mobile Applications are WhatsApp business, Facebook page, telegram, blogs, google maps Mandi app, Udaan app, Katha book app, OK credit, Dukan app, and just dial. This paper explains a deep discussion about unorganized retailers, unorganized retailers' contributions to the economy, the Digital India program, and Mobile Application. A new comprehensive framework has been proposed for mobile application adoption by the unorganized retailer after getting insights from theories like Technology Adoption Model (TAM), Extension of Technology Adoption Model (TAM), Technology, Organization and Environment (TOE), and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI). In this research, the author segments three major clusters which influence mobile technology adoption. The three major clusters are Technology, Organization, and Environment. These clusters had 10 constructs that influence mobile technology adoption. This research elaborately discussed the drivers of technology adoption in an unorganized retail context. We close by concluding that mobile application adoption by the unorganized retailer and reshaped the unorganized retail.

Systematic Review of Literature for Smartphones Technology Acceptance Using Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology Model (UTAUT)

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis are techniques which attempt to associate the findings from similar studies and deliver quantitative summaries of the research literature [1]. The Systematic review of research literature identifies the common research methods, research design, sample size, parameters used, survey instruments, etc. used by the group of researchers. This study intends to fulfill this purpose in order to identify common research mythologies, dependent variables, sample sizes, moderators and mediators used in the field of analysing technology adoption based studies that utilizes the UTAUT2 model. This research collected over 59 published articles and conducted descriptive analytics. The results have revealed performance expectancy/perceived usefulness, trust and habit as the best predictors of consumer behavioural intentions towards the adoption of mobile application. Behavioural intention was the best predictor of use behaviour among the 57 articles selected. 274 was the mean sample size of research with 25 mean questionnaire items. SPSS and AMOS were the most common softwares used in all 57 studies, and 32 of those studies used UTAUT1 model while 14 researches incorporated the UTAUT2 model. There were also two promising predictors such as perceived risk on behavioural intention and habit on use behaviour.

Exploring Factors Shaping Mobile Application Usage in Rural Uttarakhand: A Study in Selected Villages of Chamoli, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Tehri, and Uttarkashi Districts

This research aimed to investigate the impact of diverse factors on the usage behavior of mobile applications among users in the rural regions of Uttarakhand specifically in villages situated in Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, and Uttarkashi districts. The primary objective was to ascertain whether factors such as the Ease of Use of applications, Privacy & Security considerations, Satisfaction levels, Digital Literacy levels, and Internet Accessibility collectively influence the usage behavior of mobile application users. To conduct the study, a descriptive research design was employed, and primary data was collected from rural areas in Uttarakhand. The influence of various factors was analyzed using the ANOVA test. The findings of the study indicate that all the aforementioned factors significantly impact the usage behavior of mobile applications in these rural areas. Additionally, the study suggests a widespread increase in the future adoption of mobile applications in these regions.

A review of the factors influencing adoption of digital health applications for people living with dementia.

Researchers have used various theories and models to understand technology adoption, however, with the growing interest and availability of mobile applications (apps) for people living with dementia, it is desirable to have a broader insight into how technology adoption may be further improved. This paper aims to explore the factors influencing the adoption of digital health applications for people living with dementia and add to the current literature on this topic. Searches were conducted in CINHAL, Web of Science, Psych Info, ProQuest Health and Medical, IEEE Xplore and Scopus. Citation searching and handsearching were used in the identification of other studies. Following an assessment of relevancy, nine studies remained and are included within this review. Methodological quality was assessed using The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). A thematic analysis was used for the data synthesis of included studies. Each study reported on different types of apps. From the synthesis of included studies, four analytic themes were identified; Theme 1: Personal and contextual factors; Theme 2: Perceived value and benefit; Theme 3: Design and content of app; and Theme 4: Digital Literacy and Confidence. People are diverse and so are their reasons for the adoption of apps. These findings provide an insight into the range of factors that impact the adoption of apps for people living with dementia. Understanding the factors that impact the adoption of mobile applications is critical to their success. These findings can be beneficial for app developers and for people living with dementia and their carers.

A Study on the Acceptance of Mobile-Banking Applications in India—Unified Theory of Acceptance and Sustainable Use of Technology Model (UTAUT)

This research makes an attempt to understand various factors that influence the adoption of mobile applications. Within the context of the “Unified theory of acceptance and use of technology” (UTAUT) modified model, considering the upcoming demand and increase in demand for mobile-banking applications, the researcher tried to explore the theoretical concept between random people of various states in India. The primary data was collected by preparing a questionnaire and circulating it using Google Forms. The collected data was further coded into Smart PLS 4 to understand the model and structural equation with reference to mobile-banking technological adoption and factors that had a significant impact. The conclusions derived from the study is that social influence, “effort expectancy”, and “trust” factors had a very strong influence on the “purchase intention”, whereas “effort” and “risk” factors had a negligible impact on purchase intent. It was also found that the UTAUT model is appropriate for evaluating the technological adoption of mobile-banking applications. With the advent of many players in the market and their unique banking management applications on mobile platforms, consumers are moving towards different third-party app than their origin bank in which they hold account. This has forced banking institutions to up the pace in the competition, introducing a lot of new features. It is also important to understand that, as a customer, there are a lot of attributes that he would be looking into for adoption. This paper is an attempt to understand the advancements in various variables that consumers would look at in the area of mobile-banking applications.

Mobile Multi-Brand Loyalty Programs

This study, based on value theory, aims to shed light on our understanding of changing consumer perspectives on loyalty programs (LPs) within the digitally transformed retail environment by assessing the significance of value perceptions (i.e., monetary, hedonic, symbolic, knowledge) provided by LP benefits on member satisfaction. The value theory was expanded with the addition of personalization and information disclosure comfort constructs in accordance with the literature on mobile application adoption. The results of an online survey study on two leading coalition LPs in Turkey indicate that the monetary, hedonic, and symbolic values established by LP benefits are positively related to satisfaction. Furthermore, personalization was found to be a major factor that indirectly influences satisfaction through different perceptions of value. Privacy concerns, on the other hand, were found to have a significant but weak influence on satisfaction. Finally, the well-established effect of satisfaction on attitudinal loyalty was also confirmed.

本稿の目的は，消費者によるオムニチャネル統合度（Omni-Channel Intensity；以下OCI）知覚が，オムニチャネル買物体験におけるモバイル・アプリケーション（以下モバイルアプリ）の利用および，購買意図とブランド推奨意図に与える影響を明らかにすることにある。オムニチャネル買物体験の知覚指標であるOCI（Huré, Picot-Coupey, & Ackermann, 2017）は，オムニチャネル・ショッパー（Omni-Channel Shopper；以下OCS）によるモバイルアプリ受容行動と購買意図に影響を与え，その体験がブランド推奨にも影響を及ぼすと考えられるが，この関係性に着目した研究は少ない。本研究は理論的枠組みとして技術受容モデルを採用し，因果モデルを提案した。アパレル企業におけるOCSを対象とした定量調査を行った結果，直接効果としてOCIの構成概念であるシームレスネスはモバイルアプリの利用容易性と購買意図に正の影響を与え，知覚された一貫性はモバイルアプリの利便性と利用容易性に正の影響を与えることが明らかになった。さらにこれらのOCI構成概念はモバイルアプリの利用容易性を媒介とした利便性への正の間接効果とともに，モバイルアプリの利便性を媒介としたブランド推奨意向への正の間接効果を持つことが明らかとなった。
