Pseudo-partial-derivative information-driven adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for discrete-time systems

The fault-tolerant tracking control problem is studied for the discrete-time systems with actuator faults. To lessen adverse impacts of actuator fault, a PPD information-driven fault estimation algorithm is established to adaptively estimate actuator fault information online, which avoids the additional construction and training process of neural network. With the aid of the adaptive fault compensation, a model-free adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control algorithm is constructed to ensure that the expected output reference trajectory can be tracked by system output. Moreover, only input and output data are employed throughout the design process, system dynamics are not demanded. Ultimately, the availability of developed strategy is proved through a simulation.

Nonlinear-Observer-Based Neural Fault-Tolerant Control for a Rehabilitation Exoskeleton Joint with Electro-Hydraulic Actuator and Error Constraint

The rehabilitation exoskeleton is an effective piece of equipment for stroke patients and the aged. However, this complex human–robot system incurs many problems, such as modeling uncertainties, unknown human–robot interaction, external disturbance, and actuator fault. This paper addresses the adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for a lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton joint driven by an electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA). First, the model of the exoskeleton joint is built by considering the principle of the hydraulic cylinder and the servo valve. Then, a novel disturbance-observer-based neural fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed, where the neural network and disturbance observer are incorporated to reduce the influence of the the nonlinear uncertainties and disturbance. Meanwhile, a barrier Lyapunov function is constructed to ensure the stability of the closed-loop system. Finally, comparative simulations on an exoskeleton joint validate the effect of the proposed control scheme.

Saturation-tolerant prescribed function-based adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for ACV with uncertainty and faults

This paper presents an adaptive fault-tolerant control system for Trajectory tracking of air-cushioned vehicles (ACVs) in the presence of actuator saturation, internal and external system perturbations. The proposed approach utilizes a state observer to estimate and compensate for the disturbances and saturation fault information present in the tracking system of the ACV. To achieve the desired performance, a new prescribed performance function (PPF) is introduced that is both global and saturated-tolerant. The PPF ensures that the error converges to a predetermined function in fixed time for any initial value, although it weakens the limits on the amount of overshoot. The combination of the observer and PPF with a backstepping fault-tolerant controller leads to improved transient and steady-state performance of the tracking control system for ACV. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Adaptive Fault-Tolerant Tracking Control for Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Unknown Control Directions and Limited Resolution

This article addresses the adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control (FTTC) problem for a family of strict-feedback uncertain nonlinear systems subject to limited sensor resolution and unknown control directions. Both partial loss-of-effectiveness (LOE) and lock-in-place (LIP) faults of actuators are investigated. An adaptive control strategy based on a Nussbaum-type function and neural networks is presented by introducing a backstepping approach to make the system output track a desired reference output signal with bounded tracking error in the case of faulty actuators. The effect of the limited resolution is decoupled from the nonlinear system and is approximated using a neural network. The impact of disturbances is effectively compensated by utilizing adaptive parameter estimation terms in the backstepping procedure. It is proven that the proposed FTTC strategy can ensure the boundedness of all signals and guarantee that the output tracking error can converge into a small neighborhood of the origin. Two simulation examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed FTTC strategy.

Adaptive Fault-Tolerant Tracking Control of Quadrotor UAVs against Uncertainties of Inertial Matrices and State Constraints

This paper presents a study on a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fault-tolerant control scheme. According to the attitude model and safety control of the aircraft under the uncertainty of inertial matrix, the attitude state constraint by reinforcement learning is designed to ensure safety. Even if the boundary is crossed, it can be pulled back to the boundary by means of a designed penalty function with reinforcement learning. Meanwhile, in order to inhibit the oscillation caused by immediate reward as usual, an adaptive update law is proposed. Furthermore, considering the coupled actuator fault and system input saturation due to uncertainty of inertial matrix, the Nussbaum-type function is utilized in this work to handle this challenge, which likely causes the singularity of inertia matrix. As a consequence, combined with the Lyapunov stability theory, it is confirmed that the proposed FTC scheme ensures that all the closed-loop signals are bounded. Simulation results are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed control scheme.

Adaptive fault tolerant tracking control of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with non-cooperative target

In this paper, the problem of tracking a non-cooperative target by heterogeneous multi-agent systems(MASs) with actuator faults is studied. Since the target is non-cooperative, the system matrix of the target is unavailable. Hence, the existing results dealing with consensus problem of heterogeneous multi-agent based on known exosystem matrix are inapplicable. A neural-network-based adaptive observer is designed for estimating the output of the non-cooperative target. Then, a finite-time adaptive fault tolerant controller is developed to resolve the heterogeneous target tracking problem in the presence of actuator faults. The tracking errors can converge within finite time. The proposed controller is fully distributed, thereby no longer requiring the system matrix of the target and actuator fault rates of the tracking agents. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed strategies and the correctness of achieved stability conditions are verified by some numerical examples.

Command filter-based adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for uncertain non-strict feedback multi-agent systems with or without state constraints

This paper considers the topic of adaptive leader-following fault-tolerant tracking control for a class of non-strict feedback nonlinear multi-agent systems with or without state constraints in a unified solution. Through the use of certain transformation techniques, the original constraint system is recast as a new completely unconstrained system. Compared with the existing results, the limitation that the constraint functions need upper bound is relaxed. By employing radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) to approximate the unknown functions. A novel adaptive fault-tolerant consensus tracking control (CTC) manner is raised with command filtered backstepping design. Then, through the Lyapunov stability analysis, the proposed scheme can ensure all signals in the closed-loop system are cooperative semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB). Finally, simulation example confirms the efficiency of the proposed method.

Hierarchical Structure-Based Fault-Tolerant Tracking Control of Multiple 3-DOF Laboratory Helicopters

This study proposes a hierarchical structure-based fault-tolerant tracking control methodology for multiple 3-DOF helicopters in the presence of system nonlinearities, uncertainties and simultaneous actuator faults (partial loss of effectiveness, stuck, and saturation), and sensor faults (bias and drift). The hierarchical structure consists of the decentralized fault estimation hierarchy and distributed fault-tolerant tracking control hierarchy. The distributed constant gain-based, node-based, and edge-based adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control designs are developed to cope with bidirectional interactions and to guarantee the robust asymptotic stability and the good tracking property of multihelicopter systems, respectively. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchical structure-based tracking control algorithm.

Small-Gain Technique-Based Adaptive Neural Output-Feedback Fault-Tolerant Control of Switched Nonlinear Systems With Unmodeled Dynamics

In this article, the issue of adaptive neural fault-tolerant control (FTC) is addressed for a class of uncertain switched nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems with unmodeled dynamics and unmeasurable states. In such a system, the uncertain nonlinear parts are identified by radial basis function (RBF) neural networks (NNs). Also, with the help of the structural characteristics of RBF NNs, the violation between the nontsrict-feedback form and backstepping method is tackled. Then, based on the small-gain technique, input-to-state practical stability (ISpS) theory, and common Lyapunov function (CLF) approach, an adaptive fault-tolerant tracking controller with only three adaptive laws is developed by designing an observer. It is shown that the designed controller can ensure that all the closed-loop signals are bounded under arbitrary switching, while the tracking error can converge to a small area of the origin. Finally, two simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the suggested control approach.

Prescribed performance adaptive fault tolerant control approach for nonlinear large‐scale systems with time delay interconnection and dead zone input

AbstractIn this study, a prescribed performance adaptive fault tolerant tracking control scheme is presented for a class of nonlinear large‐scale systems with time delay interconnection, dead zone input, and actuator fault. The radial basis function neural networks are used to approximate unknown nonlinear functions. Different from the barrier Lyapunov functions used to achieve the symmetrical prescribed performance, a new error transformation is introduced in this study to achieve the desired asymmetrical prescribed performance. In addition, Nussbaum function is introduced to solve the difficulties caused by dead zone input and actuator fault. Based on the appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functions, the effect of time delay interconnection could be compensated. By using backstepping procedures, an adaptive fault tolerant tracking control approach is developed for the considered large‐scale systems, and the stability of the closed‐loop systems is analyzed by Lyapunov theory. Meanwhile, the prescribed performance of the tracking error could be guaranteed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control approach is illustrated by two simulation examples.

Fault-Tolerant Funnel Control for Uncertain Linear Systems

We study adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for uncertain linear systems. Based on recent results in funnel control, and the time-varying Byrnes-Isidori form, we develop a low-complexity model-free controller that achieves prescribed performance of the tracking error for any given sufficiently smooth reference signal. Within the considered system class, we allow for more inputs than outputs as long as a certain redundancy of the actuators is satisfied. An important role in the controller design is played by the controller weight matrix. This is a rectangular input transformation chosen such that in the resulting system, the zero dynamics, which are assumed to be uniformly exponentially stable, are independent of the new input. We illustrate the fault-tolerant funnel controller by an example of a linearized model for the lateral motion of a Boeing 737 aircraft.

Fault tolerant control for strict-feedback nonlinear system via event-triggered adaptive algorithms

In this paper, the event-triggered adaptive fault tolerant tracking control for the strict-feedback nonlinear system with mismatched unknown parameters, external disturbances and actuator faults is addressed. A novel adaptive fault tolerant mechanism is presented to overcome the difficulty arising from the actuator faults and mismatched parameters, where the parameters estimators are generated from discrete state governed by the state dependent event-triggered mechanism. Furthermore, by introducing the auxiliary dynamic, it is shown that all the signals of the system are ultimately bounded and the asymptotical output tracking error is within a small residual set including origin which can be modified arbitrarily small by tuning the control coefficients. Based on the presented adaptive fault tolerant mechanism, the robust event-triggered mechanism and adaptive algorithm are further developed and the boundedness of all the variables of the system is shown. What is more, it is proved that both of the presented event-triggered mechanisms are Zeno-free. Finally, the control effectiveness of the proposed fault tolerant strategy is discussed and verified by a numerical example and the single-link manipulator.

Adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control of flying-wing unmanned aerial vehicle with system input saturation and state constraints

In this paper, an adaptive fault-tolerant attitude tracking controller based on reinforcement learning is developed for flying-wing unmanned aerial vehicle subjected to actuator faults and saturation. At first, the attitude dynamic model is separated into two dynamic subsystems as slow and fast dynamic subsystems based on the principle of time scale separation. Secondly, backstepping technique is adopted to design the controller. For the purpose of attitude angle constraints, the control technique based on Barrier Lyapunov is used to design controller of slow dynamic subsystem. Considering the optimization of the fast dynamic subsystem, this paper introduces an adaptive reinforcement learning control method in which neural network is used to approximate the long-term performance index and lumped fault dynamic. It is shown that this control algorithm can satisfy the requirements of attitude tracking subjected to the control constraints and the stability of the system is proved from Lyapunov stability theory. The simulation results demonstrate that the developed fault-tolerant scheme is useful and has more smooth control effect compared with fault-tolerant controller based on sliding mode theory.

Adaptive Fault-Tolerant Tracking Control for Discrete-Time Multiagent Systems via Reinforcement Learning Algorithm

This article investigates the adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control problem for a class of discrete-time multiagent systems via a reinforcement learning algorithm. The action neural networks (NNs) are used to approximate unknown and desired control input signals, and the critic NNs are employed to estimate the cost function in the design procedure. Furthermore, the direct adaptive optimal controllers are designed by combining the backstepping technique with the reinforcement learning algorithm. Comparing the existing reinforcement learning algorithm, the computational burden can be effectively reduced by using the method of less learning parameters. The adaptive auxiliary signals are established to compensate for the influence of the dead zones and actuator faults on the control performance. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proved that all signals of the closed-loop system are semiglobally uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, some simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Adaptive Fuzzy Output Feedback Fault-Tolerant Compensation for Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Infinite Number of Time-Varying Actuator Failures and Full-State Constraints.

This paper focuses on the observer-based fuzzy adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control problem for uncertain nonlinear systems subject to unmeasured states and unmatched external disturbances. By designing a high gain state observer and a disturbance observer, unmeasured states and unmatched external disturbances are estimated and robust tracking performance is improved. Moreover, the barrier-type functions are introduced to the backstepping design procedure to address the problem that all states do not violate their constraint bounds. Finally, a novel fault-tolerant control scheme for output feedback is proposed by combining with the projection technique. By designing appropriate Lyapunov functions, it is concluded that all signals of the plant are bounded and the desired tracking error can be regulated to a small neighborhood around the origin. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the designed control scheme.

Fuzzy Adaptive Quantized Fault-Tolerant Control of Strict-Feedback Nonlinear Systems With Mismatched External Disturbances

In this paper, the problem of adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for strict-feedback nonlinear systems is investigated. By using the Nussbaum function technique, the difficulty caused by input quantization and infinite number of time-varying actuator faults is handled and a novel fuzzy adaptive control scheme is designed without estimating a lower bound on the quantizer parameter and the time-varying effectiveness factor. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proven that all the signals in the resulting closed-loop system are bounded and the tracking error satisfies the desired performance all the time. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Robust Adaptive Fault-Tolerant Tracking Control for Uncertain Linear Systems With Actuator Failures Based on the Closed-Loop Reference Model

This paper addresses the problem of robust adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for a class of linear systems with parameter uncertainty, external disturbance, and actuator faults including loss of effectiveness, outage, and stuck. According to the online estimation information provided by adaptive mechanism, a fault-tolerant compensation controller is constructed for robust tracking of closed-loop reference model systems. Compared with the existing results, by introducing the closed loop reference model which provides the additional degree-of-freedom, the transient performance of the systems can be improved. It is shown that the signals of the resulting adaptive closed-loop systems are bounded and the tracking error converges to zero asymptotically. A simulation example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant design method.

Neural network-based finite-time adaptive tracking control of nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems with actuator failures

In this paper, the finite-time adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control for nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems (NSFNSs) is investigated. To avoid the problem of “complexity explosion”, a novel finite-time command filter is introduced to generate command signals and their derivatives. The fractional order error compensation mechanism (ECM) is designed to quickly compensate the effect of filter error. By combining the approximation abilities of neural networks and command filtered backstepping (CFB) approach, a finite-time adaptive control strategy is established. It guarantees that the output tracking error approaches to a sufficiently small region of the original point within finite-time, and all signals of the closed-loop system are finite-time semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB). Finally, two simulation examples are supplied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method.
