This article discusses the competitive advantages produced by the use of the Activity Based Cost System (ABC). This system allows managers to identify the specific costs of each one of the company activities, process and products. We present an empirical test that shows which strategic variable managers use when deciding to adopt the ABC System. The strategic variables tested in this study are: 1) the importance of a given cost system; 2) the level of competition of the industry; 3) the diversity of the product portfolio; 4) the speed of change in the industry. 1. O Sistema de Custos ABC“Activity Based Cost” O sistema Activity Based Costing (ABC) e uma metodologia de apuracao de custos que visa gerar informacoes que auxiliem a gestao das empresas no alcance dos seus objetivos estrategicos. Neste sentido ABC pode ser considerado um teoria tecnica (Argyris e Kaplan, 1992) que visa o estimulo da acao gerencial. Esta teoria tecnica tem como pressupostos as seguintes afirmativas: O sistema Activity Based Costing e composto de uma serie internamente consistente de regras de alocacao de custos, que visa a determinacao detalhada dos custos das atividades processos e produtos de uma empresa. O sistema Activity Based Costing, por fornecer informacoes especificas sobre os custos dos recursos requeridos para a producao de bens e servicos para consumidores individualizados, permite aos administradores adaptar suas decisoes a fim de desenvolver relacionamentos com clientes que sejam mais lucrativos, explorando melhor as oportunidades de precificacao abertas pela transparencia de custos em nivel individual. A determinacao de quais os sistemas administrativos adotados por uma empresas, sejam eles sistemas de contabilidade, de controle da producao ou de gestao de recursos humanos, devem se subordinar a estrategia geral da empresa (Chandler, 1962; Lawrence e Lorsch 1967; Thompson 1967), segundo os autores classicos da teoria da contingencia. Desta maneira o sistema de custos escolhido por uma empresa e uma variavel que deve estar subordinada a uma variavel precedente que e a estrategia geral desta empresa (Alles e Datar, 1993), o que nos leva a supor que o interesse ou o desinteresse pela utilizacao do Sistema ABC vai depender de uma serie de variaveis descritivas estrategia da empresa, tais como a importância percebida do sistema de custos, o grau de competicao enfrentado pela empresa, a diversidade de seu portfolio de produtos e servicos e a velocidade de mudanca na industria que a empresa opera. Por este motivo testamos uma serie de hipoteses relativas a relacao entre a postura e a posicao estrategica das empresas e a sua disposicao de intensificar as tecnologias gerenciais de detalhamento na alocacao e controle de custos, exemplificada pelo sistema ABC. Sao estas hipoteses: H1 A probabilidade de uma empresa utilizar o Sistema ABC aumenta quando aumenta a importância atribuida a informacao obtida de um sistema de custos. H2 A probabilidade de uma empresa utilizar o Sistema ABC aumenta quando aumenta o nivel de competicao que a empresa enfrenta H3 A probabilidade de uma empresa utilizar o Sistema ABC aumenta quando aumenta a diversificacao dos seus produtos e servicos H4 A probabilidade de uma empresa utilizar o Sistema ABC aumenta quando diminui a velocidade de mudanca na industria que a empresa opera. 2. Metodologia Estatistica do Estudo A fim de verificarmos a validade de tal afirmacao utilizamos o banco de dados da pesquisa realizada por Khoury e Ancelevicz (1999) e recorremos a uma regressao logistica multipla. Neste modelo, a variavel dependente e uma variavel binaria que possui duas possibilidades: sim ou nao, que sao expressos pelos valores 0 ou 1. As variaveis independentes assumem valores na escala numerica.
